I'll be putting up my Bajo recap in a couple of hours. I usually watch the whole thing once through on the DVR and then watch again, FF>> through the less interesting parts, and slow down for things I want to write about.

I'm not watching anything on this network again and I'm doing double recap duty until the end of the year. But if any of your shows have good examples of Fashion Felonies, could someone screen-grab some and send them to me with some captions or comments? BAJO – LUNES – Parte 1 de 2
Jacob gives Adela a pep talk. He wants her to assist him with his magazine about the problems of undocumented persons in the US. He suggests night school classes to learn more. I think she left without even a high school diploma. He mentions that she’d be able to talk about abuses of undocumented workers. She thinks about Ramona but doesn’t tell him. She says she’ll think about it.
Alan tells Juana she has to stay to look after his house while he’s on an out of town trip.
We get some more futile phone calls between Gracie and Rodrigo. He isn’t ready to leave LA just yet and she whines.
El Colmillo shows up at Rod’s apartment and tells him someone tried to poison him. He says that Rod is the only one he trusts.
We see some a scene between Chabela and Cristóbal at the police station that once again demonstrate how superficial she is.
We see Rod at the gang clubhouse wielding a baseball bat. Looks like the “gang’s all here”. [For such a powerful gang, there don’t seem to be that many members!] Rod tries to get someone to confess to poisoning EC.
Carlos has come to Casa Sanders after hours to confront Adela. He says he knows that she loves him and wants the truth about what’s going on.
Santiago isn’t happy Juana won’t just tell Alan no about staying there. After she hangs up she hears a noise. A fat masked intruder barges into her bedroom. When she struggles, he bashes her in the head with a plastic phone, which, surprisingly, knocks her out. Later we see the fat burglar take off his ski mask and, of course, it’s Alan. He starts kissing the neck of the unconscious Juana.
EC tells the gathered gang members how much he did for them. Always the smartest guy in the room, Rodrigo works out the reasons why one after another of the gang members could not have done it. The last two are the cooks, whom he says wouldn’t be stupid enough to poison the food they’d prepared. We’re left with Willy and Sharon.
At the restaurant Maria notices that Felicia is nervous. Feli says she’s worried about Gracie. Maria asks her why she doesn’t ask another employee (not Willy) about her; i.e., Rod. Feli can’t resist. “As if he cares where Gracie is. He’s looking at another woman.” This whole conversation results in Felicia saying she knows that Rod loves Mati.
Carlos tells Adela to look him in the eye and say that she doesn’t love him. He moves in and some hot kisses ensue. She breaks away and tells him he has a family. He runs down the list: She accepted the pregnancy with Felicia. Maria and Luis adore her. Then… Rodrigo.
Juana starts to wake up and Alan puts the usual chloroform rag on her nose and mouth.
Rod thinks Willy did the poisoning because of what happened to Sharon. EC grabs her and says that Willy will die, but not before he sees his sister die. Just then Jay shows up and says that, if Sharon had been involved, she would have run off when the doctor arrived. He goes on to say that it wasn’t Willy because, obviously, he’s not mad about what happened to Sharon because he wouldn’t have saved Jay himself in that shootout.
Adela finally tells Carlos that she cannot be with the father of the man who ordered her brother killed, the man who searched for her all over LA to kill her. Carlos looks stunned. She tells him that things did change. Rod found out that she was Adela and has protected her. But she says she has scars on her soul, and cannot be with the father of the man who ordered her brother killed. Carlos finally accepts this reason.

In her office with Maria, Feli spits it out that Rod is in love with Mati. She heard him say it. Maria realizes that Feli having overheard is the reason Mati didn’t come to the ceremony.
Nick convinces Luis that he has to study and get into college in order to have a chance with Susy.
It looks like Alan has raped the unconscious Juana. He listens to the message from Santiago on her phone and is furious. He is watching Juana on his spy cam.
Carlos comes to talk to Rodrigo man to man about Adela. Rod: “I suppose Adela told you the whole truth?” Carlos: “You did it for this stupid criminal organization! You ordered the murder of the brother of the woman I love!” Rod, surprised, “Is that what she told you?” Carlos: “Isn’t that enough? You ordered her branded and ordered that the gang find her and kill her!” Rod: “But that was before. I changed. I’ve protected her with my own life.”
Carlos: “Yes, Adela told me you did something to throw the gang off the track. What did you do?”
Adela brings Susy and dessert and tells her that love isn’t always a fairy tale. It’s like driving a car. Sometimes you go in reverse to prevent crashing.
Rod tells Carlos that he’s never going to turn into the son Carlos wanted. He tells him not to pick away at this. Let it go. Carlos: “What happened to the child with whom I crossed the border?” Rod: “He’s right here in front of you. He’s a killer. Because I killed a woman to save the life of your woman!”
Chabela brings Cris some takeout food and serves him. She perches on his desk showing a lot of leg. He’s struggling with himself about her and leaves after telling her it’s inappropriate to bring him food because he’s her boss.
We don’t hear Rod tell Carlos exactly what he did, but we hear Carlos saying he forced the woman to kill herself, a woman he didn’t even know. Rod: “”Yes, this was the only way to get the gang to stop looking for Adela.” Carlos: “How did I go wrong with you?” Rod: “It’s not your fault. It’s God’s fault for making us so different.” Carlos rises. He says he wouldn’t be capable of killing someone to resolve a problem. Rod tells his father he’s a coward.
Carlos “How is it possible you’re proud of saving Adela by sacrificing another woman?” Rod says that he owed Adela. He took her brother’s life, but saved hers. Carlos: “She left me because she can’t bear that I’m your father.” Rod: “That’s what she told you?” Carlos, coldly, “Don’t come near Luis. I don’t want him contaminated.” Rod: “Don’t worry. Luis is better off in your world, especially now you’re not so poor as you were when my mother died because you couldn’t take care of her.” He points toward the door. Carlos leaves. Rod sinks on the couch. He appears miserable. I think he said terrible things to his father so he would, finally, give up trying.

Thanks for all the time and dedication that you put into the recaps.
The incident with Abominable Alan was atrocious, although I was thinking that he
did not actually rape Juana. I had hoped that he stopped abusing her up around the neck. But I suppose you are right. And what was that wave to himself at the end
and smoothing his hair? Disgusting.
Tonight, I am hoping that Santiago and Carlos go over and storm the place and get her out of there....permanently. Supposedly, Alan is not there, so they could get access.
I am still on Greicy's side. She made a bad choice with Rodrigo, but she is loyal to him, and he has all but cast her and his baby to the four winds. I am wondering if she will ever get a makeover as suggested some time ago.
I am glad to see that Luis and Adela will be devoting time to school. This is a turning point for both of them in a positive direction.
Now, without an attachment to his father, I am wondering if Rodrigo decides to be the rightful heir to El Colmillo's Empire. It seems he may go this way for awhile, and then in the long run do what is right before he dies. (That is a simple assessment of all this.)

Bajo. Great recap, novelera! I have a feeling that Carlos would have been less upset if Rodrigo had told him that he loved Adela--after all, who wouldn't love Adela?--than he was about R.'s causing an already-sick woman's suicide. I hope Adela's going back to school turns into a PSA for community colleges in general--Tom Hanks has a wonderful essay about them and about how Chabot College (in Oakland) transformed his life. Sr. Allan is incredibly creepy--not only a rapist but he appears to prefer his victims unconscious. Yuck! I enjoyed Cristóbal's lecturing Chabela on how she should dress more professionally. It also looks as if Rodrigo is going to get control of El Colmillo's financial empire. Hmm. Wonder what he'll do with it?

Bajo: First, Adela has to get a GED then without a social security number she could not apply to attend as a regular student but can take classes and pay out of pocket( New York) but no Federal financial aid. If the show wants to be realistic they have to show her encountering difficulties with college. Great recap. Why do novelas characters are always bent of making huge sacrifices for people's own good. Uff, she is not responding to Rodrigo's crush so she could tell Carlos.

Bajo. I have had Dreamer students who have done that very thing. I don't believe that in Illinois they are prevented from getting degrees, though they are not eligible for most financial aid. Our students have university-generated student i.d. numbers and do not use social security numbers, partly for security reasons, I suspect. I also suspect that Mr. Jacob would pay her community college tuition so that she could get the GED, and maybe even beyond that.

When I appear to "dis" Gracie, I think it's mostly because of how ill-suited she and Rodrigo are. She's off the charts needy and insecure. Rod is self-assured and independent. He hates it when she clings and calls him wanting him to come home. He's right in that Adela would be the perfect woman for him, if she weren't already taken. I just cringe when she whines. Of course, she has a right to expect more from her partner. (I don't say spouse because they never married. That also surprises me -- that she hasn't insisted on that.)
If he hadn't been in prison and she was the only single woman there, that I saw, they never would have "hooked up".

I guess the Miami trip is off for Lola, as she was pondering the deal from the radio guy papa Eliecer started harping on about la negra, (her best friend Celia) and I think that sealed the deal for Lola, but then it's always been her dream to sing with an orchestra.
Carolina Gaitan (Lola) is a professional singer, I wonder if she is singing her own songs, as I would guess they would be recorded in a studio and would be extra work for an actress.

Bajo. Did anyone else notice that as Jacob's argument with Débora escalated his Spanish got more Anglo sounding, though somewhat subtly? His b's and d's became harder and his p's and b's aspirated. Nice touch. I don't know if the actor playing Jacob is a native speaker of English or Spanish or both, but if he made that linguistic change on purpose, it's great acting!

Spanprof, I'm intrigued by your suggestion about Mr. Jacob's speech. I'm have to listen for those changes. What I have noticed before is how he seems to have more of an edge when he is speaking English ("It's over, baby") than when he's speaking Spanish.

Celia catches Pedro/Martín's reflection in the glass of the booth and she KNOWS the truth. She stops singing the exuberant Buche y Pluma and then picks up with the more world-weary El amor es corto y el olvido largo. Wow! I love how the music reflects the story – we could follow along just by posting the music.
So everyone is convinced that Celia has the voice, but there's some doubt about her presence. Myrta is conventionally pretty. Celia is not. What now?
Al is finding that life with the barbudos isn't a boy scout jamboree.
And lovely Lola overwhelmed with grief and remorse walking into that pool and wanting to go under...

Bajo, the irony is that by being the victim of rape Juana could get her residency card if she went to the police and report Alan the perv. Of course, she is afraid to report him and as she believes her word against his word so no match. I feel so sad for her. Greicy gets om my nerves. Lord woman, grow up.

Bajo. Novela Maven: I meant hardened his "t's" and "d's". I think in this case Greicy is perfectly justified to be furious. Rodrigo is acting like an egotist, just as Maríá said he was. Greicy gave up her job and most contact with her family for him, and this is the thanks she gets, complete withdrawal of affection--whiny or not, she deserves better. Rodrigo is acting almost as sociopathic as El Colmillo. Variopinta and Romy, totally agree about Allan. María seems to be bonding with both Adela and Jacob, though I think she's wrong that Adela's breakup with Carlos was a good thing.
Bajo. NovelaMaven: Regarding Jacob's English--maybe the scriptwriter has watched too many bad American action movies. :)

My money is on Jacob being born-in-the-US bilingual. To my ear, when he speaks English there isn't a trace of an accent. With one exception (Jimmie Bernal, who's been in a couple of them - born in Chicago) I'd say every single Latino actor has a pretty strong accent when speaking English. Kate del Castillo is decent, but you can still hear the accent.
My co-worker's children speak 100% Spanish at home with their parents. They speak English to each other. And when they call the office and I happen to pick up, these children have no accent to their English at all.

I was surprised that Maria went to tell Adela she did the right thing by distancing herself from Carlos.
Well it seems as if Maria and Jacob have different ideas on divorce/staying with a bad marriage and the role that the children play in all of this. Food for thought for Maria.

Well it seems as if Maria and Jacob have different ideas on divorce/staying with a bad marriage and the role that the children play in all of this. Food for thought for Maria.

Bajo. It seems to me that Rodrigo has quite a sense of entitlement. As an adolescent he seemed to think that Carlos not only should have worked hard to support the family but should have somehow cured his wife's cancer, even though she had specifically told R. that she had put off telling Carlos about her illness because she didn't want to burden him and because she didn't think they could afford medical care (which they probably couldn't). Now he expects Greicy to be exactly the kind of woman he wants her to be, i.e. exactly like Adela, or Adiós. He really had no compunction about confessing his love to Adela, even though he should have foreseen that his confession would cause difficulties for both her and Carlos. He really does seem to think he's the center of the universe, and would probably be a worthy successor to El Colmillo. Unlike nearly every other person in this tn (except Débora) he hasn't made many sacrifices for other people.

Wow, just wow! I loved the way Jacob slapped his head and said "My God!" when she interrupted the big conversation with Susy to take a call from her buddy, the same one who stabbed her in the back by outing Susy to the school. And she was lying to the friend about Susy having gone to the beach house. And I noticed that when she was wailing and moaning, both to Jacob and to herself, all she kept saying was "You can't humiliate me this way." She said nothing about "I love you and want you to stay with me."
I was rooting for her to take all the pills!
Rodrigo was pushed into a corner by Gracie. I'm sort of glad he finally told her that he doesn't love her any more. She needs to hear that and get on with her life. Of course, she immediately went to: "You won't have anything to do with your child". I'm not saying Rod is a saint. He's far from that. But he can't be expected to pretend to love someone forever and ever. He's been fighting this for weeks. Even before he openly said he loved Adela, I could see he was losing interest in Gracie. I'd lose interest in Gracie! I cringe every time she's on the screen. [Sorry! I have so little patience with weak, whiny women. I have loads of women friends, and many of them have been through tough times. I have a friend who was left flat in the dead of winter in the Midwest with a newborn baby and a 3 year old and no money and no job. She's a complete success in her life.]

Bajo. It occurs to me that there are at least 2 possible reasons that El Colmillo didn't pull the trigger on Carlos. 1. Carlos isn't afraid of him, and EC may find that intriguing. 2. There are only 2 people EC seems to really care about: Rodrigo and Felicia. Killing Carlos would greatly upset both of them, not to mention that it would probably inspire Rodrigo to retaliate. And nice save on Rodrigo's part when he told EC that he had stopped him from pulling the trigger because it would attract the police and get EC arrested. Btw, neither EC nor Rodrigo seem to have the slightest fear of the police for the most part. Given how often and how openly EC shows up at La Frontera Bar, you'd think the police would be all over the place by now. Adela spotted immediately how infiltrated with pandilleros it had become.

I liked the scene where Maria laid down the law. I still don’t know how Chabela is going to work full time and pay for child care. I almost expected Maria to say something about having Alex stay at their house while Chabela works.
Rodolfo has been thoroughly chewed by everyone. I hope they’re not going with Maria eventually forgiving him. I want Maria to have Jacob.

Bajo. Thanks, novelera! I still think that if EC had really wanted to shoot Carlos he would have done it right away--as he has done with several other (admittedly minor) characters. Again, it may all be manipulating on the part of the writers, because after all, Carlos has to stay alive and have a happy ending! But in the meantime--got to keep it exciting! I think Juana will go back as well to Allan's house--she's very naive and easily intimidated. And yes, if they had wanted Chabela to be able to afford an apartment maybe they should have set the series in Modesto (if there).

Succumb to the temptation to watch Jane the Virgin, Novela Maven. It is so cleverly written that it's a joy to watch. There are funny take offs on telenovela tropes. Jaime Camil is just wonderful as a self-centered novela star but the relationship between three strong women: Jane, her mother and grandmother (who only speaks Spanish) anchors the whole thing. The first season was 22 one-hour episodes available on Amazon and Netflix and other places, too, I'm sure.

Rodolfo has caved to María’s insistence that he legally recognize Alex and support him financially. Chabela embraces a reluctant María, very grateful.
EC closes the bar and sends all the customers home. Rodrigo convinces Adela to leave, obviously afraid EC will find out who she is or see something that would put her in danger.
Juana finally comes home and, as I predicted, moves away from Santiago’s attempt to give her a pretty chaste kiss. I think she’s planning to break up with him to protect him. [Sound familiar?]
Cristóbal was present for the big shakedown of Rodolfo. He’s getting ready to leave and gives Chabela a kiss on the cheek. We can see they both are falling hard.
Rodrigo tells EC that he’s never respected his father, right in front of Carlos. He tells EC he isn’t leaving with him because he has some problems with Gracie. She’s staying with Felicia, and he needs to talk with her.
[Carlos is SO intelligent and intuitive that I’m surprised he can’t see that Rodrigo is trying hard to protect him from Colmillo.]
Sharon and Jay appear to be heading for some kind of affectionate relationship.
EC forces Gacho and Willy to try his whiskey to make sure it isn’t poisoned. Willy again can’t help himself and asks “What about Felicia?” EC says that, as long as she plays his game, she’ll be around. She’ll be another chess piece. But Carlos is going to die. Willy smirks.
At Feli’s house Carlos is giving Rodrigo a lecture about how Felicia gave him a chance and he turned the bar into a mess with gang members. This wakes Gracie. Carlos embraces her and later learns she’s left Rodrigo. Before he leaves, Carlos again tells Rodrigo never to approach his family, his brother, the bar, and Felicia.
Back at the gang hideout the disgusting EC asks Willy to bring his sister to him. Sharon is saved because she’s not there. EC settles for a three-way with some little cholitas.

Ay, Débora! Why didn’t you take those pills, woman! She’s very nasty to Jacob and then insists on waking Susy to tell her about the pending divorce. Jacob is appalled. But Débora gets a surprise. Susy isn’t shocked and she doesn’t plead with her father not to do it, as Débora was doubtless hoping.
Adela has come to make sure that Carlos is OK. Luis is very affectionate with her. Carlos tells her she shouldn’t worry about EC. He’s going to protect her and make sure he never finds out who she is. As much as it pains him, he thinks maybe she should go away. They sit at the table a while and talk like good friends.
Rodrigo asks Gracie to come back. He says he cares about her.
Carlos gives Adela a box of mechanics’ tools and a sweet letter he wrote, thinking he’d give this to her when they returned from their honeymoon.
Susy asks her parents to see Luis and tell him face to face that their relationship is over. Débora rants, but Jacob agrees.
Felicia shows up at the gang hangout, brought by Willy, I think. She’s wearing a slinky red dress. EC is drooling over her. Willy has been told to leave, but listens outside the door. Feli is surprised that this is where he lives. He says that it’s temporary. He’s going to get an apartment worthy of her. She then lays out the business deal she mentioned in the restaurant. If he leaves Carlos alone, she’ll be his woman. Willy can barely restrain himself from running into the room shrieking “Noooooo!”

So far, she hasn't done a tap of work on her job. I wonder if she will become a REAL HOUSEWIFE and stay home and learn to cook if she marries Cristobal. Compared to the rest of the sophisticated narrative, I find this plot weak and out of synch. Perhaps it is intended to be comic relief.

Did Rodrigo really tell his assembled loved ones that he is involved with the gang both for the respect people give him and because thanks to the La Colonia he has acquired rational problem-solving skills?!! Although, in fairness, he certainly has those. And indeed something did happen to defuse the impending fistfight between El Colmillo and Carlos. I wonder if that sudden pain on Felicia's part was for real or just a way to protect Carlos?

Bajo. Wow! Rodrigo is plotting a coup against El Colmillo and enlisting the Antrax gang as cover. One gets an inkling of what might have been if Rodrigo had stayed home, finished high school, gotten a degree in finance at UCLA or one of the cal states, gotten citizenship through an advantageous marriage to a US citizen, and then become a Wall Street broker or venture capitalist. He could have tanked the stock market a couple of times by now (to his own benefit of course) or handled a half a dozen corporate mergers, throwing hundreds of people out of work! That is, assuming he'd have the same narcissistic tendencies that, apart from trying to protect Adela and Carlos, he's been showing up to now.

Finally got around to watching this afternoon, as I was not home last evening.
This novela just continues to move ahead with great strides. I haven't seen one of those stagnant phases at all! Usually the stagnant phase is when the protagonists are separated (quite often by the antagonist getting pregnant) but in this case, despite Feli's pregnancy, our valiant Carlos and Adela are not sunk in misery.
Carlos is planning to buy another truck, hire some more employees, and become the most successful gardener in LA.
Adela is taking on the challenge of reading a huge stack of books about journalism, I assume. I hope they don't go with Débora being able to do something against her. I wonder where Jacob is planning to establish he and Adela for work. I sort of remember their saying early on that Jacob had made big bucks doing something in commercial real estate or financial services. Don't remember exactly what it was. But the magazine about Hispanics in the US is his soul project.

I can't believe they're going to kill off Colmillo so quickly. I certainly would like it, but we haven't seen any últimas semanas. So either they're going with it taking a long time to get the gun or the plan failing. I was a bit confused about the gun. First Rodrigo said he wanted a clean, unregistered gun. Then he said he wanted the gun connected with Anthrax so he wouldn't be blamed for instigating the "hit". In any case, I thought his plan was a good one. And it seems the writers are going with Rodrigo staying part of the gang but protecting his family. I sort of thought the die was cast when he reviewed that file showing all the money there was.
Rodolfo was pretty funny trying to ingratiate himself with Carlos. Of course he had to mess it up griping about Maria quitting working in the bar making it hard to make his child support payments. I hope they're not going with her forgiving him. They might have hinted that when Maria said to Jacob that she believed marriage was forever. I want her to be with Jacob!
Finally got around to watching this afternoon, as I was not home last evening.
This novela just continues to move ahead with great strides. I haven't seen one of those stagnant phases at all! Usually the stagnant phase is when the protagonists are separated (quite often by the antagonist getting pregnant) but in this case, despite Feli's pregnancy, our valiant Carlos and Adela are not sunk in misery.
Carlos is planning to buy another truck, hire some more employees, and become the most successful gardener in LA.
Adela is taking on the challenge of reading a huge stack of books about journalism, I assume. I hope they don't go with Débora being able to do something against her. I wonder where Jacob is planning to establish he and Adela for work. I sort of remember their saying early on that Jacob had made big bucks doing something in commercial real estate or financial services. Don't remember exactly what it was. But the magazine about Hispanics in the US is his soul project.

Bajo. At one point shortly after we met Jacob and Debora, Debora had given a long list of the ways Jacob had gotten wealthy. One of the ways, as I recall, was an opportune investment in high tech industries--also the stock market and financial services and some other things as well, I believe.
