El Hotel de los Secretos #42, 3/24/16: Discussion Space - Baby #2, Front and Center, Please
Labels: hotel
I didn't even manage to stay awake for the 8:00 show last night, much less this one, so I have no details to offer, but #@($*&!^&&$*^!!!! SERIOUSLY?!?! TWO horrible, unthinkable events in one episode?! Poor baby :(. And how could anyone give that drugged out homicidal woman the second baby? Run away, Belen. I don't like you, but your surviving child needs a better home than this manicomio.
The episode was sad and disturbing. What is wrong with the half of these people?? And we have to wait until Monday for the next episode!
Oh no! Sophia killed the baby?!
Ayala says Andres has something to do with Romulo’s secret but he doesn’t know what it is yet.
Isabel is sad that she wasn’t there when Romulo died. Julio hugs her. He says he won’t leave her side until he’s helped her figure out what happened to her father/whatever secrets he was hiding because she never abandoned him when trying to figure out the truth about Cristina. (But of course he doesn’t seem to remember that she abandoned him shortly after to marry Diego…)
Back at the hospital, Julio asks her what the doc knows about them, but before she can answer, the doc tells her that Diego is there waiting for her. (Mathilde had told him that Isabel had gone out to talk to the families of patients with measles - but there was no actual measles outbreak, just some dude with syphilis.)
Alfredo leaves for the capital to talk to a lawyer about sorting out the paperwork for his inheritance since he now has a son. He says he’ll be back the next day. Later Sofia can’t stand the sound of the crying baby, finds the laudanum in Teresa’s room, drinks it, goes even more crazy, puts tons of blankets on the baby because she thinks he’s crying because he’s cold, and she passes out on the bed. The poor baby suffocated, and she takes him to Teresa’s room. :(
Diego was super creepy and mean, and Isabel still agreed to officially move into his room and sleep with him that night. The next morning she notices bruises on her arm, goes into the bathroom, starts to draw a bath, and just cries. Diego notices there is no blood on the bed (and no other bodily fluids either, how realistic…) so he gets even more pissed than usual.
Teresa tells Diego the baby has died and they need to have a funeral. Diego says no need (since he knows there is another baby to steal from Belen.)
Cecelia asks for Julio to bring up her tea or lunch or whatever again (Ben gives him a hard time about it), and Cecelia is still drunk or just being really weird and pushes him into the bathtub and jokingly tries to drown him. He rushes out of her room soaking wet and Isabel sees him. She’s about to knock on Cecelia’s door - end of episode!
Sofia searches Teresa's room and finds the laudanum, goes back to her room and drinks the whole bottle. Meanwhile, the baby cries and cries, and in her drugged out mind, Sofia thinks the baby is cold and throws blanket after blanket on the baby, then Sofia passes out. When she comes to in the morning, she sees the empty bottle and then checks the baby and realizes she killed it.
She takes it to Teresa, and then Teresa goes to Diego to tell him to arrange a quiet service for the now dead baby. Diego tells her that it won't be necessary, the baby isn't dead. Ends there, but we all know what he's going to do.
Cecelia went out to the pub with her "nieces" and Felipe all night. Genaro beats up Felipe since he doesn't have the wine from the abbey like he said he would. Felipe gives him his father's ring as sort of insurance.
Diego tells Garrido to watch Isabel's every move. (I guess Jacinto wasn't doing a good enough job.)
Felipe asks Garrido to get in touch with Jorge Arenas (?) - I'm assuming he's some shady guy who does shady business deals so of course Felipe wants to work with him.
I had to mute the TV when the baby was doing it's last bit of crying. Even now, I feel a little sick to my stomach thinking about it. That's it for Sofi. There's no coming back from this and all because her mother wouldn't let her tell Alfie she had lost her baby and couldn't have more. Now there's a dead baby and Sofia is insane AND addicted to drugs. There isn't an anvil big enough for Teresa, in my book.
The previews are very depressing, too re: Belen and the baby.
Did Alfie ask his mother about the inheritance. I think she was ragging on Sofia and then Alfie said something and wiped the smile right off her face.
Nanette
Thanks Cynthia, J, and Cathyx for the mini-recaps. Sounds like a tragic episode. :(
Somebody is going to have to tell the fattest lie ever to try to get the other baby, especially since three other people know there is another one. This is going to cause even more grief for Sofia because the two babies' weights were not equal. Elise has eyes like a hawk so she won't miss that when she sees the second baby.
Diego rose off the couch like a vampire yesterday and is fuming over not seeing blood. Too bad, Diego! But that is going to cause more problems for Isabel who now will also have to deal with that insane madam who wants Julio.
The dunking in the bathtub was not funny and this woman is a head case. Julio had better hope she knows nothing about poisons. She looks like she might try to kill him if he rejects her again.
When is the doctor going to seriously examine Andres to find out when he can get out of bed?
Sad to say but the death of the baby was no surprise nor nothing about Isabel sleeping with Diego. Sure hope the second baby does not end up replacing the dead one.
This episode was truly horrifying. Isabel was abused on her wedding night with Diego and basically looked like a rape survivor the next morning.
The baby cried and cried, and was already showing signs of not being held enough and loved enough (eating poorly with Belen) and then that endless scene where she rages about being unable to sleep, looks for drugs, and gradually suffocates the helpless, crying baby. Hearing his cries get softer and softer as the blankets were piled on was simply HORRIFYING. And now to rip another baby from Belen's arms to turn over to this waste-of-oxygen laudanum addicted woman is unthinkable. Say what you will about Belen, she loved her babies and did her best to keep them both fed (very difficult for a nursing mother) and loved and warm.
I watched this today. Had I watched it last night before going to bed, I would have had nightmares all night.
Alfredo told Elsa that he was married and had a male child so it met the requirements of his fathers will so he was headed to see a lawyer. This after Elsa had asked him if he was sure the child was even his. It did shut her up quick.
Every blanket Sofia piled on top of the crying baby turned my stomach.
Isabel married the guy so what did she expect?
All I can say to last night is that I am a card-carrying member of the WUSS Society. A show even remotely starts to infer a child will be hurt or killed and I can't...I just can't. So I didn't. I'm done with Sophia. She's grown woman, she could put her foot down, she could have told the truth to her husband or her sister. She could have asked the doctor to help her off the drugs. But there is that privileged, rather lazy quality about her that wanted the finer things too and the easy way out. I can't help but see when she throws those hissy fits or stomps her foot like a petulant child that perhaps her greed got her her own destruction point too. So now a child dies because of it.
And because we have people who seem to think children are something to be bartered and traded like a sack of flour, Teresa and Diego will be threatening Belen or flat out stealing her baby. But Andres knows the truth, so does Angela, so does Julio...who speaks now or forever holds their peace. Another child dies...ok, can't go there.
As for Isa, we knew that was coming and honestly, sort of glad I turned it off at the Sophia scene and didn't go back in. Sounds to me like he is a rough, abusive lover, that isn't just the way he was with Belen. It's his personality and I'm sure he looks at his wife as merely his possession to do as he pleases with. Yes poor Isa, but she willing married this idiot. Now what does she do? She runs to Julio, she puts his life in danger. The plot thickens...This is definitely the ugly part before, hopefully, the resolutions and bad guys get theirs.
Final retribution...burn the blasted place down.
Daisynjay
I feel sorry for Sofia. She was fragile at the beginning. She wasn't capable of withstanding all the stress the lies were causing her. She didn' even kill the baby in a way that was vicious. She wanted to stop the crying, true--but she thought she was helping by putting the blankets on him to keep him warm. Don't get me wrong. I know she's got major faults. But I feel she's a victim, too. Having said that--as much as I sympathise with her--she deserves an anvil at the end. My guess? She'll get mama's gun and off herself. AND DO NOT EVER LEAVE HER ALONE WITH THAT SECOND BABY!!
As for this episode of Hotel, quite frankly, did the writers really have to go to having the baby killed ( chalked up to Sophia's drugged brain)? Really a low point in TN history.
And as for responsibility of this horrendous act: well the whole family is responsible, especially Dona Teresa who certainly knew Sophia was incapable of caring for the infant. Why didn't she check on her? And Isabel (much too preoccupied with her wifely and hospital duties) knew her sister was having problems with the baby. As did Belen and Angela.
And Diego and Dona Teresa apparently are going to substitute baby #2 and let this disgraceful excuse of a human being take care of another child? OK so it's not her baby but given her mental state she has no business getting near any baby.
I still blame the writers of this Mexican version; at lest in the Spain version one of the babies died but not though utter carelessness.
Just disgusted with this episode.
Postpartum depression was first described by Hippocrates but apparently many 19th-C doctors either never read his writings or just described such patients as "neurotic." There were doctors in that era who understood it, so why isn't Dr V saying this to Elise? Wait a sec; she wouldn't buy it no matter what. Elise will always believe what she wants to believe.
Floodgate, we agreed not to discuss any details about the Spain version.
Cathyx, I don't think I've seen a single telenovela where every secret wasn't revealed. Isabel will surely find out what a crappy father Diego is - and let's hope he doesn't impregnate her.
As for the baby swap, I don't see how Teresa, Diego, and Sofia can possibly manage to pull off the switcheroo. They thought they were in a shaky position with the Andres secret, this is even shakier. Even without Elise interfering, there's also the fact that Belen, Andres, Angela, and maybe Julio also know about the twins.
I liked the business between Garrido and Felipe. Garrido wasn't supposed to take his eyes off of Isabel. But Felipe said it would be worth Garrido's while to take him to see that guy about getting some wine for cheap. That's all it took to derail Garrido's plans. Diego will probably kill him for failing this time.
I was impressed when Felipe came back with Cece and the nieces... Cece was all hung over and miserable. You'd think a woman in her line of work would be used to partying all night. But Felipe was just his usual self. (And he really can take a punch. Of course, being wicked drunk helps.)
I can't think of anything else in this episode that hasn't been covered in comments already.
While Sofia was looking for drugs, she saw a gun, I thought she was going to kill herself, can't believe what she did to that poor baby. She will probably use that gun later
What happened to the fake blood? for the marital bed?
Belen will scream her head off, if she survives
I was shocked with baby 1 death, from the previews I felt that the baby was going to die and just the fact of thinking it made me feel sad. I remember that when Belen made Violet had an abortion, I wrote a rough comment about the best punishment for Belen was to lose her baby and that it was better for that child to be in heaven than with a crazy woman like Sofia and even with his own mother. Maybe I was kind of changing my mind now. Surprisingly motherhood was waking up a sweet side of Belen and I have enjoyed her scenes with the babies. I hope that she defends like a lion her another baby, it would be too much that she also loses baby 2.
I just caught up on this week's episodes and took the liberty of recapping this one. I hope you don't mind. I'll post it in parts.
Recap - Part One
Julio and Isabel are still at the comisaría. Ayala believes it’s no coincidence that someone attempted to murder a simple waiter twice. “Coincidence is the mask behind which hides methodology”, says Ayala. He is convinced that the secret hidden in Don Rómulo’s letter, the Gold Knife Killer and Andrés are somehow related. Andrés is the only thread (hilo) that will lead them to solve this mystery.
At the hospital, Matilde and Dr. Vicario are giving Violeta a crash course on bacteria (gérmenes) and the importance of wearing gauze facial masks (gasa) to prevent their spreading. The Doc and Matilde suspect that one of their patients has syphilis. They hear Diego’s car pulling up outside. They agree to cover up for Isabel’s absence.
Isabel and Julio have left the comisaría. She is angry and won’t let him help her with her bicycle. She yells at him to leave her alone then she hugs him and cries in his arms. She feels guilty for not being present when her father died. Had she been there, she would have helped her agonizing dad with whatever tormented him. Had she been there, her father would not have confided his secret in a letter and left it with someone else. Julio vows to return the favor she did him when he first arrived: He will help Isabel find “her truth” the way she helped him find his.
Matilde tells Diego that they’ve had many cases of measles (sarampión) and that Isabel went out to examine the patients’ families to thwart further contagion. Diego seems genuinely worried for the safety of his runaway bride. He asks Matilde for a gauze mask and waits for Isabel’s return.
Elisa is sowing doubts in Alfredo’s mind. She tells him that the issue is not whether Sofía is a bad or good mother. The issue is whether Sofía is even a mother, to begin with. She accuses her daughter-in-law of engineering a masterful simulation (simulacro) of pregnancy. Or at the very least of having someone else’s child. Alfredo is indignant at his mother’s ravings and at her crushing haughtiness (“Su soberbia es apabullante”). He demands his inheritance and threatens to go speak to the family lawyer immediately.
Dr. Vicario intercepts Isabel and Julio before they enter the hospital. At that precise moment, Julio was just asking Isabel on the extent of Dr. Vicario’s knowledge about their relationship. The Doc reprimands Julio and orders him to go back to the hotel immediately because Diego is inside waiting for his wife.
The baby won’t stop crying. Sofía yells at Belén and accuses her of hurting the baby. Belén retorts that the one hurting him is Sofía because she keeps the poor baby prisoner all day, never touches or hugs him. Alfredo interrupts the tense scene and announces that he is leaving for the capital to take care of the issue of his inheritance. Teresa and Belén take their leave from the couple. Teresa tells Belén that she appreciates her because she feels that she is good at adapting to new circumstances and the ability to adapt is a privilege of intelligent beings. However, if Belén is ever tempted to stop acting intelligently, she should remember that her son sleeps three doors away from Teresa’s room. Teresa ends her thinly-veiled threat with a thank you and a good night.
Diego is losing patience with Isabel. He demands that they live together as husband and wife. The mustached vulture wants to bunnyhop. He dares Isabel to break the promise she made to God the way she broke the pact she had with her husband. He gives her one hour to empty her old room and move into the marital bedroom.
Alfredo heads out to the city. Sofía is left alone with a crying infant. She can’t deal with him so she goes to her mother’s room and rummages through drawers. She finds the bottle of laudanum next to a revolver. She leaves her fingerprints on the revolver, picks up the bottle of laudanum and takes off. Those fingerprints will come in handy when the next cadaver shows up at the Gran Manicomio.
Julio and Isabel’s bike return to the hotel just as Brother Felipe and his merry hoes leave in an automobile.
Sofía and the baby are both wailing. They’ve had enough of each other.
Andrés, his head contraption, Belén and her spare baby have taken over Julio’s room. He leaves them to it. Julio sits on the ground outside his door.
Brother Felipe and his merry hoes are at the village cantina. Cecilia seems mesmerized by Violeta’s singing. Genaro pulls Felipe aside and, in between punches, interrogates him about his charming entourage. Genaro doesn’t like competition. He won’t tolerate that Felipe plays the priest pimp (cura alcahuete). Felipe assures him that the ladies are merely friends of his; no disloyal competition to worry about. Genaro serves him a few more punches. He wants to know where his wine shipment is. Felipe doesn’t have the wine and he can’t give Genaro back his money either. Instead, he offers him his father’s ring as a guarantee. He promises Genaro that the abbey’s wine provider will source him the wine. Genaro will get his shipment in 5 days. Genaro gives Felipe 48 hours to deliver the goods (mercancía) or he’s a dead man.
Sofía and the crying infant are still having serious communication problems. She asks him what he needs her to do so he can finally shut up and let her sleep. Her nutty mind concludes that the baby is cold so she piles blankets on top of him and falls asleep. I don’t like where this is going...
Diego escorts his runaway bride to their marital room. She is in the marital bed, no doubt willing God to smite her husband dead. Smite him, Lord! The mustached vulture gets naked and slithers next to her. He sniffs his prey and calls out her name. She turns around with a complacent, if frozen, smile. I don’t like where this is going...
It’s the next morning, Isabel wakes up next to a sound asleep Diego. She has multiple hickeys on her shoulder and back. Ew, ew, ew! They did the deed! ¡No puede ser! Where’s the puke? That bed should be a puddle of puke! Ew, ew, ew! She goes to the bathroom and fills the bathtub with hot water and hot tears. There goes the rest of the day, Izzy. Get scrub-a-dubbing, girl! Diego wakes up and checks the sheets for the tell-tale signs that Little Diego has just explored uncharted territories, planted a flag and claimed the new colony for the crown. No such signs. His disappointed vulture eyes dart every which way. I don’t like where this is going...
Sofía wakes up and finds the poor creature dead. There are not enough anvils in the world...
Brother Felipe and his merry hoes are back from their nightly escapade. The bright sun makes Cecilia feel like a vampire. She and Felipe flirt before parting ways at the hotel entrance.
Teresa is savoring the quiet morning but she spoke too first. Sofía brought her the baby she just killed.
In his office, Diego gives Garrido the opportunity to redeem himself (redimirse) and regain his former enviable position of Idiot Goon Number One. Diego figures the idiot you know is better than the good-for-nothing you don’t (Es mejor un imbécil conocido que un inútil por conocer). He wants Garrido to become Isabel’s shadow and to report on everything she does, every breath, every flutter of the eyelashes. Everything!
Don Benjamín suspects that there is something inappropriate going on between Julio and Cecilia because she asked for Julio by name, again. He warns Julio that he’ll time him when he delivers breakfast and threatens to personally fire him ( yo personalmente lo pongo de patitas en la calle) if he crosses the limits of decorum ( rebasar los límites del decoro). Julio assures Don Relojito that the distance of 40 centimeters has never sounded more wise to him than it does now.
Felipe asks Garrido to find him a good wine provider. Garrido pretends not to know at first but Felipe is well aware of his murky dealings. “Gypsies don't read each others' palms”, says Felipe (no nos leamos la mano entre gitanosno se puede rajar). Felipe is being his cocky foolish self and wants to be introduced to Jorge Arenas ASAP. Well, this business venture has “success” written all over it.
Julio takes Cecilia’s breakfast to her room. She is calling for help. He rushes to her rescue. It’s a trick. She pushes him into a bubble bath and kiss-attacks him.
Teresa enlists Diego’s help to bury the poor baby. She wants a discreet funeral service. Diego tells that she doesn’t need a funeral service because he will prove to her that her grandchild is still alive. There is not an anvil big enough for this vermin.
Isabel sees a soaking wet Julio coming out of Cecilia’s room. She also hears Cecilia calling out after him: “Don’t run away, waiter!”. Isabel stops short of knocking on Cecilia’s door.
One thing the writers got wrong here (IMHO), but was needed to propel the story forward was the baby staying in the same room with the mother. In those early days of the 20th C., a la Downtown Abbey, after a birth, it would have been unusual for the baby to stay in the room, especially, if the mother had a wet nurse for the baby. Most women of their social level would not have breast fed their babies--Elise would be the exception to the rule, as Teresa so sarcastically pointed out.
In addition, for the first few weeks, a baby will need to be fed at the very least, ever four hours. Someone should have been checking on the baby, or at least be with the person who is feeding it.
In fact as late as the early 1960s here in the U.S. it was still unusual for mothers to breast feed. Turning to bottles and formula was the norm. Ever heard of La Leche League? It was founded in 1956 (!!!) to help new mothers in a supportive setting to feel comfortable with breast feeding. I was introduced to them in our natural childbirth classes, but I found them a little too strident for my taste. That didn't stop me from breast feeding both my babies.
None of the shows are on either on Uni or Telemundo this evening. It's all about Easter.
Sorry guys but there is an incomplete paragraph in Part Four of the recap. I must have accidentally erased a couple of sentences before posting. Here it goes:
--
Felipe asks Garrido to find him a good wine provider. Garrido pretends not to know at first but Felipe is well aware of his murky dealings. “Gypsies don't read each others' palms”, says Felipe (no nos leamos la mano entre gitanos). He promises Garrido to make this worth his while. It might even be a contingency job for when Diego gives him the boot. Garrido gives him the name “Jorge Arenas” and warns him that he runs with a serious band of bootleggers, up North. These people are dangerous and once one gets involved with them, there is no backtracking allowed (no se puede rajar). Felipe is being his cocky foolish self and wants to be introduced to Jorge Arenas ASAP. Well, this business venture has “success” written all over it.

Apologies.
Anita- You still got me covered April 6th?
GROSS. PTOOEY.
Thanks Julie and Julia. You're very kind.
-- Nanette, I can't believe we both used exactly the same expression ("there is not an anvil big enough") It's telepathy! :)
-- Vivi: We're still good, amiga! A deal's a deal. I can't switch with the Tuesday recapper because we don't have one. I'm the Tuesday summary/discussion page provider, I can't switch with myself! :D Enjoy your holidays, catch you when you get back.
Now, I really have to go. Happy Easter! Night night! :)
Now would be a good time for Belen to shout to the four winds about Baby #2 before she loses another one to a drug addict.
Kelly
Vivi--I GOT YOU COVERED APRIL 6. RELAX and have wonderful trip.
2 very un Uni novela events, Sofia kills the baby, QEPD #1
Isa resigns herself to sex with her esposo, instead of all kinds of stupid ways to avoid it, is Uni maturing?
These people are a nightmare unto themselves.. yeah those bastards are going after twin #2. The tn gods should not let That happen. But you know they twist things to their advantage. And sometimes leaves us hopeless. Ok that Is to deep, Im suppose to be relaxing this weekend. I hope this show improves in the folowing weeks, cuz smuthering your baby cuz you don't want to hear him cry is just to much. I would have rather she put the baby in a room snd close the door than what she did. WTH!!!!! WTH!!!!! QTH!!!!! QTH!!!!! Doin that is bad in any language. She was already crazy this' ll just push her on over. And yet mother is no help at all. Ok bye.
Thank Nandicta
Of course, that's a bad thing, because now they each spend twice as much time fending off twice as many mothers. But at least they understand one another.
I'm sure Sofia would be healthier, and she and Alfredo would be happier together, if they lived far away from both mothers; unfortunately Elise would probably follow them to the ends of the earth. Here's hoping she kacks soon.
Since I had a narcissistic mother most of my female friends had toxic mothers. The ones who got married seemed to have married men with toxic parents and/or other family members. We can't marry Waltons (as in John-Boy or Mary Ellen) because they don't get it. Until about 30 years ago the whole notion of a nurturing mother was a major sacred cow in the US and nobody dared to dispute it.
Until mental health professionals began writing books about it.
Dr Susan Forward's book, Toxic Parents, was a revelation to me. I followed it up with multiple books on narcissism and specifically parental narcissism and this helped a lot. Among other things authors will advice readers to cut ties with hurtful parents if they continue to hurt due to their selfishness, envy, or attempt at control (which includes gaslighting). Sometimes that is the only right thing to do to save yourself.
Love this: "I don't like where this is going. . ."
We both agree about the biggest anvils in the world, but not who deserves them. I believe Teresa should get them. If it wasn't for her, Sofia would not have been put in the position she was in. Sofia does deserve an anvil, of course. My guess is that she'll commit suicide. Maybe she'll off Teresa in the Gran Final and go catatonic and be sent to a real manicomio.
UA: you're a survivor. Good for you. My parents problem wasn't nearly what yours was, and even my minor situation with them has effected me my whole life.
