El Hotel de los Secretos #27, 3/2/16 Wednesday: Let’s Leave This Damned Hotel!

Isabel objects to her mother ordering Sofia to strip down in front of her suegra and butt-kissing assistant, while poor Sofia stands trembling like a scared three year old. Teresa doesn’t give a damn about Isabel’s objections or Sofia’s dignity. She just wants to blow Elisa’s schemes and intrigues out of the water by proving there’s a (psychosomatic) baby bump. When Sofia doesn’t strip fast enough, Teresa does it for her. Elisa it too horrified by the vulgar act of stripping one’s daughter, to even care that her theory about a fake baby was wrong (but she’s actually right). She and Victoria hustle out of there as fast as possible. Isabel helps Sofia dress, then comforts her crying sister. Teresa’s loving departing words—“Stop crying, Sofia! You well know this was a victory.”

Teresa is told that she has a call waiting from a mysterious woman. It’s Cristina. She’s willing to give Teresa the letter, in exchange for as much money as Teresa can gather. They agree to meet at 8pm in the ironing room of the hotel.

Elisa is still in a tizzy about Sofia’s forced strip. She’s actually feeling sympathy for her now, growing up with a mother that would put her on display like cattle (ganado). Her poor son is married to these classless people. She must get him out of here! She’ll tell Congora about this, but not via those untrustworthy, newfangled telephones, where God knows who’s listening in! No, she’ll send a telegram. Alfredo arrives at her bidding, and she tells him about the horror show she just witnessed. His poor wife!

Isabel also tells Matilde about Sofia’s humiliation. Matilde basically tells Isabel-- Girl, you have GOT to get out of this place before it devours your spirit and will to live, like it has your sister and brother! Run, do NOT walk! Isa gets offended that Matilde is saying her mother is the soul-sucking vampire responsible, but Matilde says Teresa’s being consumed by this luxurious hellhole too. Isa can’t turn her back on what her father built. Matilde suggest Plan B—marry Diego to “save” the hotel, and take him up on his offer to let her go back and finish her studies in the capital. “But I don’t love him!” Matilde can’t believe Isa’s still stuck on her school girl fantasy of love. Just then, they hear Julio’s siren song. He’s summoning Isa to the woods. She tells Matilde it’s the last time, since he’s leaving that night on the train—♪said he’s going back to find a simpler place and time.. ♪ Julio asks her one last time to come with him, but Isa won’t leave. They share one last tearful hug, then go their separate ways to cry some more.

Mateo reports to Diego about the mysterious call Teresa received. He didn’t…he did…well, maybe he recognized the voice. Cristina Olmedo!

Alfredo expresses to Sofia his utter disgust over what her mother did to her. His solution—they need to get the hell out of this damned hotel! Now! He starts packing, and Sofia’s nervous twitching and hair twirling intensifies. She says she can’t, because of the baby. Alfredo says they can get a doctor to come with them. Sofia says half to herself, "This is my home." Alfredo isn’t listening. He’s too busy packing.

Another woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown is Eugenia. She's watching over Mercedes, and practically jumps on top of her unconscious sister to stop the involuntary movement of her hands.

Doc Vic finds Isabel crying and offers a fatherly shoulder and advice. The older we get, the more careful we have to be with our hearts, he says. They can only get broken so many times before they stay broken and can’t love again. The two go for a walk, away from all the hubbub and preparations for the big fashion show that evening.

Diego is chewing Teresa out about not telling him about Cristina’s call and offer. She put HIM in charge of finding Cris, the letter, and getting rid of her. Teresa points out the folly in his argument. If she can get the letter (and get rid of Cris) herself, why would she tell Diego, who is blackmailing her with the contents of the letter, so that he can have the letter in his power? Diego grabs her arm, and tries to make her honor their deal. She tells him that WAS the deal—past tense, sonny! “Where you failed, I will triumph. I will get that letter from Cristina Olmedo, no matter what!” (cueste lo que cueste) Neither one realizes that Sofia heard much of this exchange while listening in at the door.

Sofia is more of a nervous wreck than ever, and goes to find Alfredo in their room. All their bags, save one, and clothes are gone, and so is Alfredo. She goes into a mini panic and starts searching for and calling to him and Doc Vic all over the hotel. Sofia ends up in her father’s old study, where she trembles like a leaf and barely holds herself together. She does not know that Alfredo and Doc Vic are actually together, with Isa, on the lawn, discussing her. Alfredo wants the doc’s approval to take Sofia to the capital, right away. There, he will make sure she and the baby get the best medical care. Doc Vic, knowing there’s no baby, tries to discourage this, but Alfredo will not be swayed.

In town, Andres tries to find work in the bakery, but the baker is BFF with Teresa, sells much of his bread to the hotel, and doesn’t want trouble. He can’t hire him. Violeta comes in, and brings Andres back to the cantina with her to see if Genaro can offer him a job. Genaro is highly amused that pretty boy (muñequito) Andres thinks his waitering, shoe-shining, newspaper-ironing skills might come in handy in a place like this. Violeta suggests he become a fighter. Genaro calls over his boxing trainer, who’s busy pummeling some guy, and tells him Andres is his new trainee. The training starts immediately, as the cantina watches. Andres’ first lesson is how to take as many punches and kicks as possible, and stay conscious. He seems to do fairly well with that. The next lesson is learning to throw and land a punch, and Andres is terrible at that. Felipe comes in, and is shocked to see Andres there. However, not too shocked to not already start contemplating laying down bets. When he sees how terrible Andres is as landing blows, he jumps in, and takes out some of his own Alarcon baggage and frustration out on Andres. He starts to punch, shove and bully Andres, ordering him to hit him. But Andres refuses to break his lifelong training to never lay a hand on an Alarcon. Violeta tries to intercede, just as Jacinto (who has decided to be a gentleman and apologize to Violeta for how he treated her) arrives in the cantina to take in the whole scene.

Angela is heartbroken to be separated from her son. She goes to Andres’ room, touches his Bible and pillow, and has a good cry in his bed, where she falls asleep. Lupe hears her, and keeps shooing all the noisy footmen away.

Diego meets with Garrido and explains to his idiot henchman a few times what he wants him to do—NO failures this time! They will go to San Cristobal in the hotel’s car, and they better not be seen by anyone in the town. They will then split up. Garrido will guard the main exit out of town, and Diego will take the other, to intercept Cristina. If they don’t find her within an hour, then Diego will come meet Garrido at the main entrance.

Julio arrives at the carpentry workshop looking for Cristina, but no one is home in the unlit workshop. Well, perhaps I spoke too soon…Detective Ayala is there, waiting in the dark. The jig is up. He’d already noticed Julio’s many visits there, and it didn’t take him but two seconds to realize that’s where Cristina was hiding. But he was waiting for Julio to come clean, per their agreement. He didn’t bust in and grab up Cris before because even though he’s a man of the law, he’s also a gentleman. But now he can see that one of the siblings (Julio) is a serial liar, and the other (Cris) is always late/going missing. Julio insists he’s protecting his sister. The law protects the wolves, but leaves the sheep unprotected. “So according to you, your sister is a sheep? Very well. Then we’ll see just what kind of sheep she is.” Julio admits that he and Cris were fleeing that night, on the train they both hear leaving. He’s sure she’s in trouble. They have to get to the Gran Hotel to save her!

Little (black) sheep Cristina, is making her way through the town to head to the hotel to get her blackmail money. She hears Diego speaking to Garrido, and ducks into an alcove. She realizes they’re looking for her, and manages to sneak into a group of passing peasants as they walk by. Garrido seems to notice, or maybe not. In any case, he follows the group, then seems to follow Cristina when she breaks off from them.

At the hotel, the fashion show is about to get started within the hour. One of the guests, who’s already prepared to be scandalized by Pierre Paulet’s corset-less French fashions, confirms to us that the current time is 7:15 PM. Teresa takes note. Elisa is excited, and even lets Victoria show some décolletage and join in the fun. The maids and footmen are also excited, as they will get to see the show while keeping glasses full for the patrons. Even the kitchen maids come upstairs to peek. The chamber music starts, and the crowd’s excitement grows.

Teresa uses the distraction to go to her rooms. She does a sign of the cross in front of her altar (where Cris had the letter hidden all that time in her prayer bench!), then goes to her dresser, takes out a folded black shawl, and pulls out a revolver. She tucks the revolver away in her garter, and heads downstairs for her date with Cristina.

Meanwhile, Cristina is making her own preparations for their date. She goes into the ironing room, and turns up all the pipes (steam or gas?), making the room inhospitable as you enter. And just as the fashion show gets under way, she kills all the power throughout the whole hotel and the grounds.

In her father’s study, Sofia lights a candelabra. Outside, Isabel and Doc Vic head towards the hotel to find out what’s going on. Belen, had earlier left her post at the fashion show, and is sneaking around the hotel. Lupe and a footman speak outside of Andres’ room and wonder what happened to the lights. Angela wakes up, exits and asks them what’s up. No one knows.

Teresa lights a candelabra and heads to the ironing room, with her gun drawn. She sees no one, but smells the gas. She hears a woman scream, and heads just outside the service entrance towards the sound. She finds a woman lying supine on the ground. It’s Cristina! She appears to be taking her last breaths. Teresa searches her body for the letter, and finds nothing. We see a figure in a maid’s uniform in the shadow of an archway near the woods. It’s Belen, and she is hungrily reading THE LETTER. She looks up from the pages, practically breathless from the stunning revelations.

I know I joked yesterday that the only way Cris and Julio were going to leave was in a body bag. But dang! I really wasn't expecting Cris to get killed last night!

—♪said he’s going back to find a simpler place and time.. ♪

Boy oh boy!! Great recap Vivi! I am increasingly in awe of how they keep each episode of this TN edge of seat, plot twists and we STILL cannot finger who does what most days. (Is this murderer connected to the full moon murders or no? Ayala will be busy.) And for your musical reference, which I loved, I think at this point there is a whole train section full of people that need to leave that hotel for someplace simpler. Alfredo is so right to want to leave...still hope they do, but have a feeling they won't and we will watch Sophia slowly go mad. GRRRRR.

Speaking of whom.. When even Elise is outraged you know that Teresa crossed the line, especially considering the sensibilities of the times. I was disappointed somewhat in Isa, wanting her to be even more outraged at the moment and was hoping her blinders of her mother would finally fall off. (And shut up Mati - some friend suggesting marrying Diego as a means to get out of town. Good lord. )

As for Cristina's demise. As soon as she called Teresa, I kind of figured the jig was up with her. That was a very stupid and dangerous thing to do...basically her greed got the better of her. No wonder her and Belen had been friends, two of a kind or did she learn from the master. NOW, if Belen has the letter and that puts her as premier next victim, all for it. But Cristina's death assures Julio hangs around now, so there is that.

I'm not loving watching that pretty face and hot bod of Andres getting beaten up. There is not any other place to get a job? Really? First time I felt we had a stupid plot device set up. (He and Vio do make a cute couple when standing side by side...just sayin',so maybe that's where this goes?).

Well, tonight is must see TV that's for sure.

Daisynjay

Thanks, Daisynjay! So you think Belen is next now that she has the letter? No babies born in this tn, huh? Well, it wouldn't surprise me if she's bumped off. She's ticking off too many people and no one likes her. Did she kill Cris?

ITA about Mati's advice to Isa to marry Diego as a way out. What makes her think he's a man who honors his promises? Isa would be more trapped in that hotel than ever, and stuck with that slime as a husband!

Great work, Vivi.

Ditto on how I feel about Andres ending up in that dive getting beaten up. That was a baptism by fire if ever I saw one and he will end up disfigured and badly injured in the long term.

Isabel should have objected much more strongly to Sofia's humiliation. Elisa's reaction really surprised me, but I don't think this will affect her relationship with Sofia in the long term. She wants her little boy all to herself and any other woman is competition.

As for Christina's actions, she's a nasty piece of work. I think it was gas that Teresa smelled and she barely got away in time with that lit candleabra. That would have killed everyone in the building and caused a forest fire. If Christina dies, good riddance.

And where is the bad pianist with the dogs?

Oh, BTW:

Juan Ferrara (Doctor Vic) is 72 (Scorpio)
Queta Lavat (Sra Limantour) is 87 (Pisces)
Eduardo Liñán (The General) was in flashbacks of LQNPA as Rogelio's evil father

Thanks, Urban. I think Andres will either benefit from a short stint toughening up in that place, or it will destroy his sensitive soul and spirit.

Pianist dog man travels to give his concerts, so he's not in the hotel all the time.

Diana Bracho doesn't look a day older than 71. No wonder all her kids are messed up. She had them when she was way over 40!!

Anyway... I had to laugh harder than when I went to watch Deadpool when I heard the harmonica!! I even thought it was the ice cream truck passing by! God, this is ridiculous. Not even Barbara Cartland could have written something like this!

A few episodes back I heard Diego talk about Teresa's crazy idea of having phones in every room and now they have magically appear? Where was the party? Party for the electric light but no for the phones that allow people to stay cozy in their chambers when they want to make a call? Qué modhernous!

And not only that, but the phone system was SOOO GOOOD anyone could IDENTIFY the speakes 's voice without mistake! Was that Cristina's voice? How any times did he heard it thorugh the phone before? Anyway... Mateo won't hear it anymore, she is officially dead, OR IS SHE??? Cha-cha-channnnn!

Morning, Pablo. There are not phones in all rooms yet. Just a few places like reception and the offices. I cannot answer how clear the sound on those old phones were, but surely, people were able to identify voices.

Morning...

I am sure I heard Teresa say ''I will take it in my room'' but juárever, I shouldn't be paying so much attention to detail when there are bigger issues, right?

Great Vivi, thank you so much. I love this show.

"one of the siblings (Julio) is a serial liar, and the other (Cris) is always late/going missing"/dying

Dominika Paleta is fabulous. I love watching what she's doing with Sofia along with Ilse Salas with Belen.

Yep DnJ, greed got the best of Cristina. Stupid

I don't understand why Julio spent more time playing his mouth harp than inquiring of Cristina what ran her off the tracks.

I think it is because Matilde knows Isabel and her family she suggested the marriage to Diego. Watching Isabel and Diego day before yesterday sure looked like it was a possibility though some residue remains of the crush on Julio. Diego was wrongly jailed and reinstalled by her mother at the helm of the hotel her father built and the Olmedo's are bad news. Diego is committed to preserving and the Olmedo's destroying.

I must be the only person that doesn't like Andres, I see nothing hot in a wimp. However, I'm hopeful of a relationship between he and Violeta.

When does Jacinto start his job at Diego Enterprises?

I think Isabel is simply behaving in the way expected of her with regard to Diego. She definitely doesn't want to marry him. I've said this before (probably on PyP) but moneyed people don't ever show their true feelings in public or to strangers. Diego is still creepy to her and that won't change.

Now that Belen has the letter in her possession she will try to get more dinero and will then earn a target on her back. Teresa will be in a very bad position if she still wants that baby.

Pablo- Wouldn't be surprised if Teresa has a phone in her rooms-- she is the owner after all. But the guests still have to use the phones in the offices and reception areas.

Tofie- You're welcome. I agree about Dominika. I feel like I'M on the verge of a nervous breakdown just watching her. Ironically enough, she played a woman who had been driven insane and imprisoned in the same locale (now serving as the hotel in this tn) in Manana es Para Siempre. Loved her there too.

Perhaps Diego didn't think Jacinto was up to murder and theft yet. Right now his only job is to keep an eye on Isa, and he's failing.

Urban- Not just moneyed people. Both Sofia and Andres adhere to the rules of polite (in the true meaning of the word) society, which often conflicts with their personal desire for truth, fairness, and justice. Many times to their own detriment.

Anyone working closely with them would also have to do this and be poorly compensated for their performances.

Elise thinks she has so much class, but she is so insulting most of the time. I'm glad she was shocked by the stripping of Sofia, but I don't think that will change her tune in the long term.

Urban- But Isa and Andres are really the only ones who stick to this at all times. We've seen how the other footmen and maids get lax with this on their own time. Like how the footmen smoke and harassed Violeta, in a way they wouldn't had any Alarcon, Ben or Angela been there to enforce the rule. The rules of their society magnify the true natures of Isa and Andres. Neither one of them has a rebellions, dramatic, erratic, or mean spirited nature, that so many of the folks around them have. Those folks need the rules to keep their baser instincts in check. But Andres and Isa actually NEED to start breaking rules in order to find their happiness.

They do and Isabel started to by going to med school. She needs to finish, but will she?

Isabel is in med school because her family has money and connections and the only way she finishes is to marry Diego. Even with the training I doubt Isabel would practice but forced to be a baby maker. I mentioned a few days ago Mr. tofie's grandmother graduated Vasser at the turn of the century, promptly married into another prominent family and never professionally used her education but raised 5 children.

Thank you, Vivi. I managed to stay awake this time for a change, but I still rely on your recap for a reality check on Thursday morning.

Funny that Elisa thinks telegrams are more private than telephones. Little does she know the boy at the telegrapher's office is on the take!

So are we to believe that Belen whacked Cristina? I wouldn't put it past her. It didn't bother her when the abortion herb could have killed Violeta.

I kind of thought that Mati was playing devil's advocate when she told Isa to marry Diego as a way to get out of the hotel. Previously, her most cynical-sounding advice has always helped Isabel to focus on what really matters to her.

Teresa smelled the gas, but I don't think she turned it off. Am I wrong?

You're welcome, Julie. No, Teresa did not turn off the gas. Hope the next person who goes in there isn't holding a candle...

She didn't; she didn't go far enough into the room and couldn't have with the lit candles. However, the first thing she should have done was to send someone in to turn it off. I don't remember seeing if there were windows that had to be opened.

I don't think Elisa actually believes telegrams are more private because by the time they get to their destination, they have been read by everybody in between the sender and the receiver. Right now, Victoria is going to write down, then the boy who counts the words, the typist, whoever gets it in the other and, and so forth... My guess is that it is only a bad reference to smartphones nowadays and how some people desperately wants the whole world to know every little detail about their lives... The irony!

Julie- I think Mati is a realist, and she just wants Isa to look at the REAL options in front of her and make a decision, instead of dithering and sighing over Julio and their doomed romance. She's decided she's not going to run off with Julio. Well, ok then. Now she has to decide what's next, and actually take some action. Med school, with no family financial support (how would she pay?); med school, with financial support from husband Diego; no med school (then what?); taking on the management of the hotel (IF Teresa lets her); managing the hotel with Diego, as his wife; running off with impoverished Julio (no hotel, no med school). None of these are great choices, but Isa has to decide on something, and Mati is trying to push her to say what that is.

Vivi--Thank you for the recap (as always a brilliant piece of writing) and so late at night.

Julie says--"I kind of thought that Mati was playing devil's advocate when she told Isa to marry Diego as a way to get out of the hotel. Previously, her most cynical-sounding advice has always helped Isabel to focus on what really matters to her."

You and Vivi reflect my sentiments, too. Mati is the realist, indeed. She been there provoking, prodding, sounding negative, encouraging, enabling all to wake Isabel up to her true feelings.

Mati is right about one thing, though, if Isa runs away with Julio, that's the end of her tuition, room and board at school. I doubt Isa is prepared to do a work-study program. Vivi, you just said it better than either Mati or I.

Anita- Thank you. It is really hard to go to sleep and settle my mind after watching and recapping this show. Yo No was like that too. But of course, the body still wakes up early as usual!

Isa does need to say out loud what she wants, AND how she intends to get it. Last night she seemed to be leaning towards sticking to the hotel and continuing her father's legacy. Well now, how's she going to do it?

I wonder if Cristina's intention all along was to kill off Teresa. Certainly opening the shuttlecocks with the gas (for the kitchen, maybe) and cutting the electricity would force Teresa to light candles. She also did it so close to 8 o'clock that no one would be able to restore the electricity or for Teresa to get a safer lantern.

I think Belen knocked Cristina out and took the letter. Perhaps it was Garrido who did the actual murder--well, we'll know tonight if she's really dead or in a Merce-like coma. The pivotal point of the episode is that now Belen has the letter. I wonder how Julio will find out.

As gringo says, must see tv!

Isn't it odd that over on Jane the Virgin, Rafael and Petra are having similar problems at their hotel. Lots of crime and dead bodies. The word is spreading that the hotel is a dangerous place to stay. Bookings will plummet and they will soon be in financial muddy waters. They've decided to do some positive ad spots (I think, unless that's ALL Jane's dream.)

Teresa had better start doing something about countering the events affecting the reputation of her Hotel. Why on earth she ever considered offing Cristina not just on her property, but actually inside her property.

Belen is supposed to be pregnant with Diego's child but she does not look pregnant. Sophia's hysterical pregnancy is showing more than Belen's.
Not sure if Belen killed Christina -- did she have a gun?

Anon--We did not hear a gun. We only heard a scream. Teresa had a gun, but she was inside the hotel. I don't think Cristina or Belen had a gun.

Thanks, Vivi, for the awesome recap. The last three eps have been riveting.

Did Belen kill Cris and take the letter? Did someone else kill Cris and Belen take the letter? Did Belen find Cris and she gave her the letter, knowing—unlike Julio—she was likely to use it to destroy the Alarcons? Did Belen know about the letter?

Will Mercy wake up with:

a. Amnesia.
b. Paralyzed.
c. Blind
d. All of the above
e. None of the above

I was so afraid to find that Jacinto followed Isa into the woods. Luckily, he sucks at his new job.

I was hoping that Andres would get a job singing at the cantina.

I agree that Teresa would have a phone in her room.

Tofie: I’m also getting a little tired of Andres’ wimpiness. What was your grandmother studying to be?

Vivi: fond memories of MEPS. Dominka was great at playing crazy then, too. Liked how she got her happy ending in that one.

Forgot to make this comment. A few eps back, Felipe came to talk to his mother before she had dressed. I thought she looked so much younger and prettier with her hair in that long braid.

Nanette

I think Belen is too obvious to have offed Cristina. Somehow, I think in this show we are being led to think certain people are committing crimes, when in actuality, it could be someone entirely different...even someone we think highly of. As the Doc said, we all have our secrets.

Anita, that's a great point on Cristina's real intention. Why meet at the hotel of all places anyway? Was her intent to destroy the place and Teresa with it? She thinks he brother is away from the place, so there's noone in that place she cares about. Blowing bldgs, blowing people is "for the cause" to take down the elite. Cristina more and more sounds like a full-fledged revolutionist if you look at her intent that way and to boot, she might get away with needed funds for the cause too.

And may I say as a woman of some years, though I appreciate the hunks, Juan Ferrara could tickle my fancy any time. Sigh...

Daisynjay

Thanks, Nanette! Yes, all kinds of interesting questions about how Cris ended up on the ground, and Belen ended up with the letter. We don't yet know where Garrido is, and it definitely looked like he was following Cris in the pueblo.

Anita- It sure did seem like Cris intended to off Teresa with that gas/no lights/candles plan. But perhaps she rightly knew that Teresa intended to kill her. Or actually, she likely assumed that's exactly what Teresa intended, when she heard Garrido and Diego hunting her. So instead of going to the hotel to get her money, at that point, she decided to get even.

Anon- With her clothes and corset on, Sofia doesn't look pregnant either, just like Belen. I've read lots of novels from the corset era that describe how far along women could get before they showed, because they would be laced tightly into their corsets. Yikes! Poor little babies in the womb.

Daisynjay- Cris first wanted to meet somewhere else, but Teresa refused. Cris even mentioned to Teresa that she would be at a disadvantage since they were meeting on Teresa's turf.

Good catch, Vivi. Doesn't change the outcome, unfortunately.

Thanks, Vivi...or should I call you Vivid, since you describe it all so clearly that I feel like I saw it, even though I didn't stay up to watch last night?

Teresa does have a phone in her own room. We've seen it before. I think she's the only one, though. Everyone else has to use the phone in the office or the lobby.

Oy, Andres. Fighting is not a good gig for him, unless there's a silver lining where he finally learns to protect himself. I don't know what his singing skills are, but he and Violeta would be cute performing together...and then being all "Belen who? What is a Jacinto?" Too bad our handsome waiter is not sharp enough or cynical enough to be a detective; police work seems to be the only thing that's booming in this town.

I liked the Matilde character much better in the original series. Here, I can't tell what she's up to. And why does she keep hanging around? Doesn't she need to go study and take her own exams? Why is she letting Isabel's dithering derail her own life?

Isa should make a deal with her mother: pay for her to finish school and set up a practice, and then she'll consider marrying Diego. Well, it would be worth a try. Or insist on a huge trousseau/dowry of lots of jewelry, then run away and sell it to pay for school.

Nanette - ditto on Teresa with her hair down. She looked much younger. I don't think most of those hairstyles are especially flattering. Sofia's hairstyle gives her a severe appearance (severe AND deranged when she's been pulling out pieces to twirl), and Isabel's often looks untidy. And they do tend to make women look older. (I don't like the mustaches, either. And I hate Alfredo's tiny beard.)

I know Garrido makes sense as Cristina's killer except for one little thing. The guy's incompetent. If he managed to whack her, it would be a first.

Julia- Thanks! And thanks for the confirmation that Teresa has a phone in her room. I suspected as much. We've seen Mati with book in hand a few times, so apparently while Isa is off gallivanting with Julio, or crying in the forest, she's actually studying for their upcoming exams. Aside from the lies, deceit, and murder, the Gran Hotel isn't a bad place to hang out and study for exams.

This is a mining town, and mining is something you're born into and practically do from birth. Not something a guy just jumps into. The Hotel seems to be the only other big employer (and maybe the railway). Not much to offer a poor young man looking for work.

Julie- If Garrido offed Cris, he still failed at his mission if he didn't get the letter. Plenty of reason for Diego to yell at him about his incompetence.

I was sure the hotel would explode! But then, that would solve lots of problems too soon.

Are we sure Cristina is dead? I though Belen just bonked her on the head to steal THE LETTER and she's unconscious. Either way, I want more candelabras in my life.

Kelly

Kelly- I can't wait to find out tonight what Cris' fate will be. It doesn't look good though. We actually have no idea if Belen injured her. We just know Belen has the letter. Any number of things could have happened.

ITA about the candelabras. Flashlights just don't have the same appeal. :)

Vivi: refresh my memory. How would Belen have known about the letter?

Thanks for the recap, Daisynjay! This show is so addicting!!

I am also wondering how Belen knew about the letter, and how she managed to take it from Cristina at that exact time and place. Why was she even wandering around downstairs instead of working?

I assumed Cristina would die since the actress was always listed as a guest star, plus it guarantees that Julio will stick around at the hotel to find out who her killer is.

I must have missed it, but why didn't Teresa give Andres his job back in the end? Why did Angela let him go without much of a fight?

Nanette and J- I don't recall Belen saying before that she knew anything about the letter. That doesn't mean she didn't know Cris was holding something over Teresa. We saw during the fashion show that Belen was keeping an eye on Teresa. She sneaked out after she saw Teresa sneak out, so perhaps she just decided to try her luck and see what Teresa was up to and ran into Cris as a lucky break.

J- It's never been clear if they only thing Angela was holding over Teresa was Sofia's miscarriage or something else. If it was just the miscarriage, then Angela herself conceded to Teresa that she was not willing to hurt Sofia just to get one over on Teresa. So she was relinquishing that as a weapon to twist Teresa's arm.

I don't like the hairstyles, either. Isa looks messy and Sofia looks like the boss in the Dilbert comics. I like the idea of intricate, sophisticated updos, and I like a lot of the hairstyles in other olde-tymey dramas, but most of the ones we're seeing here aren't that appealing. I think I like Angela's hair the best. It's interesting, yet tidy, and doesn't make her look like she has horns or a lion's mane.

Andres’ first lesson is how to take as many punches and kicks as possible, and stay conscious. He seems to do fairly well with that. The next lesson is learning to throw and land a punch, and Andres is terrible at that.

Beautifully stated, Vivi. And I agree with the commenter who wanted to call you "Vivid". The episode came back to life for me, scene by scene, as you described it

The vocabulary in this one is very interesting. I'm hearing lots of words that I'm too lazy to look up, but Elisa especially seems to use some interesting, no doubt insulting words, when she's not trilling in badly accented French.

Still enjoying this greatly. Hope the bubble doesn't burst. The scene with the two sisters was certainly macabre though. I keep fearing that a pillow smothering is in the works.

And the good doctor, Daisynjay, yessssss. A mature galan indeed, plus sensitive and intelligent. Works for me!

Thanks Vivi. Excellent re-telling of a great episode.

I thought there were other secrets between Angela and Teresa. I thought that was brought out before Sofia even had her miscarriage. Of course, with all that's happened between then and now, it's quite likely I'm not remembering that correctly.

Meant to say how much I liked Victoria's dress last night. The color was perfect for her. I don't care for either Elisa or Victoria--though I do find Elisa entertaining--but I have to say that I like how E. treats V. There hasn't been one instance of E. using her power as an employer and mistreated her.

Maybe Victoria is Elisa's own secret daughter who for whatever reason was raised by someone else (to hide that she had a child in unexplainable, husband-was-away type of circumstances?) and Elisa hired her to get her back and be able to dote on her. Or maybe she comes from a really posh family that ran out of money, so Elisa considers her more of an equal than all these peasants she despises.

Being a "companion" to a spinster or a widow probably was the fate of well-educated young women whose families "fell into ruin." We've also seen amas de llaves in the past who were poor relations.

Many of those "companions" likely ended up becoming spinsters themselves because of aging past the acceptable marriageable age limit.

You forget there are many aristocrates that know the Alarcons from their stay at the gran hotel.Maybe one of them will offer Julio and elisa possible med school and detective job to live out their love for each other.

Nanette, it was my husbands great grandmother (I misspoke and said grandmother) and she majored in history at Vassar but all students at the time had to study classical languages greek and latin. My mother and father emigrated from southeast asia in the mid 50's.

Thank you Vivi, I really needed that convo between Ayala and Julio translated. I appreciate it.

How do you know Cristina is dead? Was it in the avances?

Sofia is such a mess. That's what I say every time she's on the screen.

Oops just realized I typed Daisynjay instead of Vivi - thanks for the recap, Vivi!

Thanks Tofie for the story on your husband's fascinating great-grandmother. Your parents must also have some stories to tell!!

I always assumed the secret Angela and Teresa had between them was that Andres is Romulo's kid. Pure speculation. But again, not something that Angela would use as blackmail leverage over Teresa because she wouldn't want to willfully hurt her son.
