El Hotel de los Secretos #35, 3/15/16 Tuesday: A Night For Fireworks Yes, But For Diego, No

First part of who knows how many.....

As we JIP this episodio:

·        Trouble has joined his big bro’, Double, and Julio does the unexpected honors.  Julio has heeded Belen’s warning that Dona Teresa already tried killing her once tonight by locking her in to have her bleed to death; thus, he moved her into his and Andres’s room for safekeeping.  Belen has told mini-T that Andres is really the son of old, dead Romulo Alarcon and therefore they’ll be protected from harm.  No one will touch them once he’s awake and they’re married……(Well, as Viewerville knows, it won’t be for lack of somebody’s constantly tryin’!)  That’s assuming Andres does marry her in the end, ¡por supuesto!

·        The local boys who work the mines head down to do another day’s work for another day’s pay--unos cuentos centavos-- as Los Ricos enjoy Isabel Alarcon’s wedding reception and one of the major events of the year.

·        Julio is forced to endure Isa’s pointed snubs and that degenerate dog, Diego’s, slobbering over her during the reception.  (After his cruel torturing of the beleaguered, birthing Belen, I am certain he fathered not a few bastard Natzi SS officers somewhere along the line.)  Don Benjamin sees to it that Julio ministers to the recién casados whatever their need. Right now, it is serving Isabel and Diego the cake cutter.  (OMG!!!)

·        Mr. Silver-tongued Snake implores his new bride to let them/him begin from scratch with their new lives.  They’ll forget the past mistakes.  All before this has been a rehearsal, alright?  She smiles innocently back at him.  And Julio observes as the band plays on….. Isa glances up towards the balcony and notices Julio fighting back his tears.

·        Upstairs, Elise and Teresa grouse at each other over the baby’s looks as the doctor tends to Sofia’s needs.”--Oh, a couple of hours, sniffs Elise?  I spent over 18 hours in labor!”  “—Surely you browbeat and frightened him!” Teresa snaps back.  if he doesn’t look like Alfredo’s side of the family it’s because he looks like Teresa’s father—an architect or engineer or some such, sayz Teres.  The doctor finally tells them to can it or move it outside, cuz Sofia's…. Ah-hemmmm…..suffering.  …..(Yeah, but it ain’t due to birthin’ any baby!  It’s that she’s smart enough to have recognized the kid is Diego’s demon seed, despite her mental illness and depression--mustachio and all!   Bwahahahahahahahha!!!)  "--It's plain you can't stand my daughter.  Just who's looking out for her while  you spit out your bitter cherry pits, eh?"  "--Well, who's been looking out for my son!  You've abandoned him to his fate to sit and rot in jail!" --Yeah, well, she's been caring for Sofia, Teri sayz in defense of herself.  "--On the other hand, you, Lizzy, how many times have you been to visit him i that jail, hmmmmm?????"  Lazaro lights into the women again.  Elise sputters her way out the door and down to the reception once again.  She mutters to herself this cannot be real.  It isn't true!  ( That kid cannot be Sofie's????)

Downstairs, Lupe pours the tired and depressed Angela a drink to calm her nerves.  He asks if she’s gone in to see Belen.  Nope.  Not her grand-kid, really. Well, Dr. Vicario says Andres is strong and he’ll recover.  When he does, they’ll marry and you’ll have real grandchildren.  “—That girl has suffered, really.  She may turn me off  [Me repatea el hígado= rub somebody the wrong way] She’s paid her dues.  She lost a child.  Yours will recover you know.  Hers can never recover.”
--------------------------

Second and final part:

·        Suddenly, Belen suffers after birth pains and hides the child in a closet before traipsing down the hall, bleeding onto the floor again.  Eventually, Angie comes down to visit with her and fortunately finds her struggling in the hallway.  She takes her to her room and then heads upstairs for the doctor –but not before Belen covers her tracks and Trouble hidden in the closet by crying over her supposedly “dead son”.

·        The general manager? of the mine comes down to gripe that at the miners for slacking on the job.  One of the men tries a wildcat strike (spur of the moment) but the others refuse to go along.  Some centavos are better than none…… and they go back to work.

·        Diego chats up some rich investor types to go in on the country club project; Felipe pigs out and enjoys the hell out of himself while his brother monks look on like Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dee; Elise mumbles to Victoria that she’s got to save her son from these cannibals; Isa gets a red concoction from her BFF to fake her virginity with.

·        Lazaro tells Teri he’s got to look after Belen.  Teresa lies that Belen died due to her hemorrhaging out.  The doctor is saucer-eyed impactado at this and feels guilty.  Dona Teresa complains that a midwife is an ignorant peasant.  It was to be expected.  No, he wisely points out; midwives have been delivering babies for eons.  They could teach him a thing or two!  Suddenly Angie shows up and says Belen’s bleeding out and bad-off downstairs.  He throws a skeptical glance Teresa’s way.  Teri thinks fast.   Er—she must have been misinformed!  “--By all means, get down and take care of the poor maid!!”  They do and he does.  (Curses, thinks she?)  Teri’s not far behind.  Lazaro finishes examining Belen and determines the placenta wasn’t properly expelled.  He tells Angie as she and Teresa look on.  He gives Angie instructions for caring for Belen.  Angie goes to take care of his requests
·
·        Belen whispers a question to Lazaro:  “—Is my baby ok?”  “--Yes, he’s fine and healthy.”

·        Outside there is a surprise fireworks display just as the mine undergoes an explosion due to a careless spark lighting the gas they all know is dangerously seeping through the cracks of the mine walls.  Julio watches Diego sweep up his—their-- lady-love and carry her off to their wedding night of bliss.  (If he only knew…..)

·        Upstairs in the newlywed’s nookie-niche, Isa begs off for a moment to apply Madi’s mixture.  (I can’t tell, but I believe she doesn’t and decides to go for broke—utter stupidity being the better part of her choice for valor…..)  She exits the bathroom and tries to get into the mood but needs to talk and explain things…. Finally,  she just plain refuses to go to bed with Diego.  He gets upset.  She’s saved by the frantic knock at the door.  “—Who’s bold enough to be knocking at this door tonight of all nights!!??) Why it’s Mother Teresa asking for Diego and Isa’s assistance with the mining explosion aftermath and bloodbath.

Julio was the son of the mine foreman, he tells Dr. V and Teresa as Isa and Diego look on.  Let him help out.  Fine, Teresa says.  You join them.

·    Diego then saves face by suggesting Isa use the new clinic facilities and assist Dr. V with the huge task ahead of them.  Diego goes to get changed.  Dr. V accidentally refers to Isa as Srita, then corrects himself and says he’ll have to get used to calling her Sra. now.  Then he and Madi head downstairs to wait for Isa (and the ever-invisible Julio).

·    Julio follows Isa down the hallway towards her bedroom as she also needs to get changed.  As they walk along together, he declares that he will never get used to it.  She and he exchange a most meaningful stare—his full of pain and hers full of remorse and bitter awareness, possibly, that she’s not going to get over it herself.

Thank you thank you! I can't wait!

This was the best unwanted wedding night ever!!

Saved by the mine collapse. But Isa can't hold off ardent Diego forever.

I am so looking forward to your recap Jardinera. I just know you are going to give the events of last night your special somethin'.

Dear Isa...that companionship idea? Yeah...should have talked things over with dear Diego before slipping on that ring.

As soon as they showed miners heading down in, just knew something was going to happen.

Seemed to me Isabel was into it a bit too much and I kept screaming no

Tofie - into it? Were we watching the same thing?? I could tell that she was trying to get into it, but it wasn't working and then she protested and eventually had to push him away.

But getting interrupted by her own Mom (the last person on earth who'd want to disrupt the consummation) was Seriously. Best. Wedding. Night. Excuse. EVER.

Yeah, Isa was giving it the old college try, but she definitely wasn't in to it. And if Diego saw the glance she made at us and the camera, he'd know too. I couldn't tell if she was more concerned about lying that she's a virgin and faking that it's her first time (fake blood and all), or more concerned about actually having to have sex with Diego. Or maybe both were equally concerning to her. In any case, to be continued.

I thought she was more concerned with how to hide she wasn't a virgin. As I watched her giving it the old college try she initiated and responded (she is human by the way) and didn't look much different than when she was with Julio except Julio didn't show overt randiness like Diego did. It did give me the willies and was hard to watch. Not that I think Julio the guy for her and Diego sure ain't but she chose to marry him.

Hi all:

yeah, she certainly did make her proverbial bed, and damned if she won't be forced to lay in it--or else!! Jes sayin' ...... Diabolical Diego!!

Thanks for the recap Jardinera! My CC was off again last night so I missed a lot of the conversations and was utterly lost sometimes. I did assume there would be a mine collapse since mines in TNs = disaster, and of course they need to use that brand new hospital for something.

The Diego/Isabel scenes are hard to watch. I am realllllly not liking Isabel anymore. What is she thinking?? Those pained expressions on Julio's face are so sad. He deserves better than her...

Gracias, Jardinera. This was some episode.

How much time has passed between Cho-Cho San putting Trouble in the closet and the end of the episode? That child needs to survive and this time Pinkerton must fall!

Isabel may have decided that if Dee Eggo doesn't see blood he'll have the marriage annulled? Or maybe she'll get her period during the proceedings and the point will be moot.

Teresa is one of the coldest women I've ever heard of in TNs. She (and the two others in this series) will be in the next gallery of Toxic Mothers, which I am working on now. However, her dress for the wedding was spectacular.

More later.

Thanks, Jardinera. We are really on a roll now!

Urban - I really loved Teresa's gown.

I got to wondering if, now that she's married, Isabel would start wearing colors. Then I realized that if she's working at the hospital she's going to continue wearing white. What will it take to get her into a green dress?

Felipe was funny, trying to justify his gluttony by force-feeding his brothers.

One thing confused me. When the doctor told Belen that her baby was doing fine, were they talking about the first baby or the second one? Does he even know about the second one, or is he still stashed away in the cupboard? (Being incredibly quiet!)

I am sure that the good doctor knows about the first baby and what the whole scheme was. We didn't see him find the second one and I think that would be too important a plot point to keep from us.

The question is: Once he knows, will he tell Teresa?

The doctor was always telling Isabel that everyone is entitled to their secrets. So, I would guess that he wouldn't tell Teresa about Baby #2.

Thank you, Jardinera! You captured it all perfectly!

I am still peeved that Isabel put herself into this situation by giving in so easily to Diego's "hospital" idea and giving up her pursuit of becoming a doctor in her own right. He sure caught her at a weak moment.

We have seen Diego as quite the batterer. I wonder how long it will be before or if Isabel will see that side of him. It should be an interesting one tonight.

I'd like to see Dee Eggo get an attack of ED, but that might be too much to hope for.

Thanks, Jardinera! Another exciting episode.

The doctor was speaking about Baby #1. He knows nothing of Baby #2, yet. I have read that newborn babies, put into a warm dark place, like a closet, will sort of go into a state as if they are in the womb, and will stay quiet and be ok for a time. But Belen needs to get back to the little guy soon. And who's going to be feeding the guy upstairs? Elisa already made a remark about Sofia not breastfeeding him-- being too feeble to do her motherly duty.

I am sure Isabel will soon see the ugly, violent face of Diego. Especially when he finally realizes that she has/had a lover, and is still in love with him.

Yep, fantastic!! Thanks so much Jardinera.

With all that's in me, I hope we don't see the abusing Diego, but I can see him let the anger fly if Isa keeps putting him off. Hopefully he won't put her through what he gave to Belen, but he thinks he has the whole family over the barrel now with the letter in his possession. Not sure he'll feel he has to answer to anyone.I just can't wrap my head around why such an intelligent woman didn't think this whole marriage thing through to the end.

I've not been a fan of the doc buying into this fake baby fiasco, but I'm hoping he discovers baby #2. At some point, SOMEONE has to check on Andres or hear that baby cry, closet or no. Maybe it will wake Andres out of his coma. I don't want to see that child die from neglect. Just no.

As for Sophia--I think she's too far gone in her addiction now to care for that child. Or even want it. Does she let slip to Freddie when he gets home? The doctor looked concerned as she was flipping out about that poor little thing. Teresa doesn't even deserve to be holding it. (And what about feeding????)

Daisynjay

ED specifically might be too much to hope for, but we might as well hope big!

Or some random, well-deserved injury could keep him out of Isabel's bed for a while. (Did he go to help out at the mine? It'd be a real shame if one of the miners accidentally hit him on the head with a shovel.) Or, hey, appendicitis could strike at any time!

A coma would be ideal, but we've already had two comas, which seems excessive for a TN this size.

There's also the chance that Isabel could suffer an injury, but I don't know if that would stop Die Eggo.

Things will certainly change for Alfredo when he gets out of jail soon. He'll have a son. (Good) He'll finally have his inheritance. (Great) And he'll have a drug addicted wife. (2 out of 3 isn't bad)

Thanks Jardinera for the recap. It was especially useful since this ep was so talky.

Is anyone else having problems with the audio? In lots of eps I can barely hear the dialogue because the music and background noise is so loud.

Diego pawing Isa had me almost throwing up. It was so creepy. Especially when he took his shirt off. He's very buff, but it was just too yuck for me. I agree that Isa was trying to get into it, but just couldn't.

Did Lupe almost run into the cake when he went to get Angela some tequila?

Finally, loved how Felipe refused the champagne while the "happy" couple left the firewords display and genuinely looked happy for Isa.

Nanette

"It'd be a real shame if one of the miners accidentally hit him on the head with a shovel".

yep, that was me letting out an unsuccessfully repressed snort at my desk. Love your thinking Julie!

My soft spot for Felipe was in full swing last night. I do believe he genuinely loves his "sister" Isa and if she's happy, he would be happy. His playfulness, dancing and eating at the wedding were a much-needed comedic or light-hearted touch. he just LOOKS better. I do hope things stay that way for him. He had a lovely day now get away from that viper mother of his and he'll be fine.

Wish Sophia had that option. That poor woman has had tragedy written all over her from the first episode.

Daisynjay

I had the same problem, Nanette. I could barely hear anyone talking during the wedding reception because the music was so loud.

Vivi at 2:03 good one!

I doubt that Die Eggo could be deactivated for more than an episode or two at this stage of the story. The thing with mystery series like this is that they can't be extended without doing serious damage to appropriate plot development.

I'm sure the midwife will collect another fee to find a bereaved mother to nurse the stolen baby. Even in those days there were baby bottles.

Elise needs to be evicted from the hotel. Since Alfredo has to be at least 30 he needs to tell her to get a life.

I didn't notice the wedding reception band being too loud probably because I'm having trouble with the background score drowning out the dialogue.

I know Belen kinda did bring this on herself, having forced Violeta to miscarry, but after what she went through, I'm hoping she gets some money before she's through. And I saw a movie last night with her and Teresa- Ilse Salas and RM Bianchi, and I liked her as an actress, so team Belen! But given that she's up against Teresa and Diego, it's not a high bar.

I was only half paying attention to the Matilde scenes so thought she might be taking something herbal to prevent pregnancy. That would have been more practical than this fake virginity thing that, as a doctor, she should have been able to explain. Fail by Matilde.

Somebody good- doctor, Angela- please go find Baby #2, stat. Belen needs to write her own letter explaining everything before it's too late.

Kelly

Kelly- Thanks for the reminder of what Belen did to Violeta. Not only causing her miscarriage, but almost causing her death, and not being the least bit concerned. Now, I don't feel so bad for her. Yeah, I want her to be a thorn in Teresa's and Disgusting Diego's side, and I'd really like to see her take Diego down, but that's it.

She did suffer for it, so maybe she can enjoy some of the money before they kill her off and leave the baby for Andres and Natalia to raise. Getting too far ahead?

I think we can all agree that as long as Diego suffers mightily, the rest are secondary. That conflict is coming up. Maybe he can go broke and slowly die poor, maybe forced to work as a miner.

Kelly

Kelly: great idea for Belen to write her own explanation letter.

I'd like to know how Diego managed to get a bod like that. The only exercise I've seen him get was when he beat up Garrido. Does the hotel have a gym with professional trainers? When does he have time to work out??

Julie- He does seem to get regular workouts...in bed.

It wasn't yet fashionable for men of that class to be built like that. However, no actor in his right mind wants to work up such a physique and sacrifice it to a role. Robert DeNiro did insane stuff like that for movies and I wonder to what degree he may have compromised his health.

Fernando Colunga seems to get it right. At the moment he is the leanest I've seen him without giving up some definition.

Diego/Jorge is lean, just very defined. Just like Julio/Erick.

Jardinera, great recap and thanks. Clever

"Trouble has joined his big bro’, Double"

Belen cashed the check for 350 but ripped up the larger check after knowing what was in the letter. No way Teresa or Diego lets her live.

Though Belen almost killed Violetta had she gone to term Teresa may have let her bleed out as well. The midwife better watch her back.

Jorge wore skin tight workout clothes in La Gata so knew he has a great bod

I just watched a classic film where the actor who played the villain went on a crash diet afterwards in order to get more leading men roles. He died soon after at age 28.

I am so worried about baby #2, he is in a closet, Belen is in terrible straits, Julio to the rescue I guess.
How soon after birth does a baby need to be nursed? What about Sofia's baby? I think they had wet nurses back then.

As far as the sound, I thought it was just me, but Uni always has a problem, water running, traffic sounds. I guess its one of those Academy Award things that no one pays attention to, sound direction.

Variopinta: they're definitely not good at the whole sound direction, mixing, editing thing. If they can't be bothered, why do they INSIST on having looooooong dialogue scenes right next to a fountain.

Jorge was in La gata? now I am feeling sorry for him.

Variopinta- Internet research says babies just born can go up to the first 12 hours without feeding. The issue is the mother's breasts becoming too engorged, clogged, or trouble teaching the baby to latch. That's why it's encouraged to start nursing within the first few hours after birth, but not because the baby will starve.

Thank you Jardinera. I am having trouble finding time to comment lately. Thank you Julie for yesterday's recap too.

Didn't Angela or Julio, I can't remember which one, send Natalia to stay with Andres for a bit? Surely she will hear the baby at some point.

Natalia is distraught over her family member stuck in the mine, and Julio intends to help. The are both headed to the mines. Not sure who is staying to look after Andres and Belen.

Who was it that was asked to check in on Andres?

hi everyone.....this is bev in calif.....I was just passing through to see whats been going on at caray caray.....I have been along time reader of this blog and really enjoy reading all the comments.....I have noticed too that the music has been really overpowering....so much so that you cannot hear the dialogue....but who can u complain too....because the loud music really takes away from the novella.....I don't think its my t.v. just saying.......BNinCA.....
