El Hotel de los Secretos #38, 3/18/16: One bad night and one good night coming up
Sorry for the length, I just couldn't shorten it and not take anything out that wasn't pertinent to the story.
We open with the boys from the hotel who helped with the mining explosion returning home, all dirty and tired. They are met by Benjamin who informs them that they have to make up their time absent from their jobs. What as ass.
Diego awakes to the cold reality of his new marriage, alone in the marital bed, while Isabel is checking on the baby and Sofia. Sofia just wants to be left alone, Isabel just wants to help her. Perhaps her milk ducts are clogged, she gives her advice for that. Teresa comes in and sees the fussing baby, she said she’s going for Belen, the nodriza, wet nurse, which is a surprise to Isabel.
Julio is bringing coffee to the newest guest sitting in the lawn. Cecilia turns to see him and Julio has the shock of his life.
Teresa has a little talk with Isabel. She asks if she thinks it’s a good idea to disappear so soon after just getting married. She then gives her advice on her new marriage that Isabel does not want to hear.
Diego is questioning the receptionist, why did he allow the new guests to stay? Because they arrived in the middle of the night and paid him 300 pesos for the entire week upfront. Diego is then ok with that. It’s 300 pesos, after all. Some of the guests then complain to Diego about the new arrivals. They were acting like this wasn’t a grand hotel, but something more seedy. He tries to pass if off that they are foreigners who have different ways.
Isabel walks by and Diego flags he down, he missed her allllll night. She apologizes, she got in late and she didn’t want to disturb him. He balks at the notion that his bride would be disturbing him on their wedding night, but Isabel tells him she would like to talk to him that evening, she’s off to the hospital.
Julio tells Cecilia to leave, he’s not playing around. She gets up to leave, he follows. She tries to take his arm and he shrugs her off. Isabel was watching.
Well guess who discovered the ladies who came with Cecilia? Filipe is doing what he does best, flirting with them, and he invites them to the pool later on.
Teresa reminds Angela that it’s her job to see to it that Belen feeds Sofia’s baby, she hadn’t arrived and she’s nowhere to be found. Angela tries to excuse herself to go look for her, but Teresa wants to know why Angela has changed so much. Why is she so formal with Teresa now? Angela tells her that she kept her end of the bargain, she has lied to her son all these years, she has withstood many humiliations from Teresa herself and from her family, she’s bitten her tongue because Teresa promised her that if she did that, that Andres was going to be safe. Teresa demands to know why she’s saying this. Because Belen has now threatened Angela that she’s waiting for Andres to wake up and tell him the truth about who his real father is. How can Angela look at herself in the mirror and tell herself that Andres is safe? How could Teresa let this happen?
Teresa is tired of Angela’s nagging and always playing the victim. Does Angela think that Andres was the joke of his siblings? Well, Teresa was the joke of her husband. And Angela complains that she had to bite her tongue? Well, Teresa had to also, and if she messes with Belen, Teresa is going to lose everything because the only thing that Don Romulo left her was this hotel. Everything else he had to give, his comfort and companionship, he gave to Angela. What is Angela going to lose? That Andres finds out that his saint of a mother wasn’t really a saint? That she slept with the owner of the hotel? Angela needs to keep her humiliations to herself.
Just then, Nena, the old lady who lives at the hotel, interrupts to tell her that she’s very displeased with the new guests.
Julio walks with Cecilia to a more private place to chat. He asks what she’s doing there, she wants to take him home. No, he will get fired, things have changed and he is staying at the hotel, she tells him to be quiet, she goes in for a kiss, he pushes her away, they struggle, she says that she’s his wife. Wait, what???
Cecilia tells him that things haven’t changed, she’s come for what he owes her, holding up a small red book. She’s not leaving until he pays her every last cent. Nothing will be changed until she tells him they are changed, and she drops the book on the ground.
Matilde is reading Isabel the riot act at the hospital. She’s telling her that there aren’t enough beds, medicine, nor doctors for the tragedy that happened and all you're worried about is your waiter? Doc Vic interrupts to ask about the situation, Matilde tells him that they haven’t had an opportunity to go get more supplies, but just then, Ayala shows up and says he will take Matilde to get what they need. Then he smiles, OMG, that man is smitten....
Belen walked into town with her baby and stopped in to talk to a man who is probably a notario. She’s telling him that she thought she would have to deliver the baby all by herself, until 'her Tomas' showed up. She’s making up a story that they were going to get married, but the mine explosion put him in a coma and he’s not dead or alive, so to speak. She would like him to marry them anyway to legitimize the baby and her. He tells her that he can’t do that for obvious reasons.
Teresa is letting Diego know that she’s not happy that he let those meretrices (add that one to the list of names for prostitutes) into the hotel. Diego looks like a little boy being scolded. But then he then pulls out the money, saying they paid 5 times the amount for the rooms. She doesn’t like the way he’s talking to her, and she lets him know it. Does he think he’s better than Don Romulo? Diego replies that there’s a huge difference between him and Romulo. Diego is alive and Romulo is dead. And who does Diego think he is? He’s the director of the hotel now, and by Teresa’s design, he’s now Isabel’s husband. And on top of all that, he has the letter that she doesn’t have, of which the contents he can make public at any time. And those contents can destroy her.
Diego is really feeling cocky now. He tells her that he will not be threatened by her or her family, he opens the door and tells her to leave. Teresa is appalled, but she leaves. She knows when she lost.
Back at the hospital, Melibea arrives to take Violeta home, grabbing her to leave. Isa tries to talk her into letting Violeta stay to help, and when Melibea learns who Isabel is, and is willing to pay her 5 pesos a week to help at the hospital, she agrees to let her stay.
Ayala is dropping off a sleepy Matilde at the hotel and is trying to woo her, lol, talking about scientific articles he read trying to peak her interest. Just then Julio arrives and needs to talk to Ayala, saving Matilde from any further embarrassment. She calls him by the wrong name as she leaves. Who boy, that frustrates Ayala. Julio informs him that Cecilia has arrived, but Ayala is furious for the interruption with Matilde, knowing he just lost a good opportunity with her. Julio is totally confused.
Back in her suite, Cecilia is getting herself ready when Diego knocks. Her ‘niece’ answers the door with serious flirting, but Cecilia recognizes him and chastises her nieces and orders them to leave. She immediately apologizes for their behavior last night when they arrived, it won’t happen again. But Diego tells her he’s not there for an apology. He’s there for her services.
Julio comes back to his room to think about what he’s going to do with his new problem when Belen comes in with the baby. She needs his help with the baby. If he gets found out, she will get fired. Julio thinks she crazy, but she convinces him to take the baby for a while, and then just leave him in her room, giving him instructions to give him some brandy and he will sleep the day away. She hands him over and leaves. He picks the little guy up and tells he’s his uncle Julio. Awwww.
Well, Cecilia is a bit put out, it seems. She tells him that he’s mistaken, she’s not for sale. And even if she were, he could never pay enough. He tells her that that is not what he wants to buy, he wants to buy her knowledge. They agree on a price and he hands her the bottle of blood. He asks her what it is used for. She looks at it, blots some on a white handkerchief, and asks if he was recently married, then shows him the blood on it. He now gets it.
Ayala goes back to the station and Elisa, Victoria, and the judge are there waiting for him. They’ve brought an order to free Alfredo.
At the cantina, Melibea comes back without Violeta and tells Genaro that Violeta got a job at the hospital and is getting paid 3 pesos a week, although we know that she’s actually getting 5. Genaro is pleased with that amount.
Alfredo, so happy to be back at home, comes into their suite, only to see Belen feeding the baby. Uh oh!
Time for Isabela to face the music. Jacinto drops her off at the front entrance with Diego waiting for her. They finally get to dine together in their suite, Diego says this will now be their wedding night. He reminds her that she said she needed to talk to him. He’s all ears.
Julio is sneaking into Belen’s room with the baby. He gives him some brandy and leaves. He returns to his room, and as he’s starting to undress, he hears a gasping Andres. It looks like Andres is finally waking up!
Wow, 2 cliffhanger we have to wait for Monday to see.

Ok, rewatched the scene. Her is word for word:
"Quiet", Cecilia goes in for the kiss. He pushes her away, saying Cecilia, please. She tells him to be quiet or she will shout that she is his wife.
So maybe she really isn't, just threatening to shout that she is. But as of yet, we don't know.

No need to apologize for the length...it was a rather enlightening episode and you did a masterful job getting it all down for us. Appreciate all the detail since I didn't catch all the dialog...and there was a lot last night!

So Teresa actually helped her cover up the birth as a way to assure her positon and the child's safety. How very civilized? I wonder if it's also why Benny Boy gives Angela those looks: does he know the past. Yet he was nice to Andres....I'm SO Confused with these people.
And to also say, is Teresa perhaps not that bright? Because what did she think was going to happen once Die Deigo Die got his mitts on Isa, knew the secret of the letter and became the husband of the person supposedly next in line for the place?
Oh Freddie is not going to be happy with Sophia at all. What happens is Elise starts planting her seeds of doubt? Dude went to prison for his wife, and to be deceived about something as a baby...I won't be able to watch when that happens.
I also may have a tough time watching Die Diego Die sliming all over Isa which is sure to happen Monday. Tums will be at the ready! OR the remote...or both.
What is going on with Cecilia?? So we solve the contents of the letter mystery, and now we get the "what the blazes is going on between Ceci and Julio" plot. And how did she track him down? Inquiring minds want to know.
And just as things are about to implode, Sleeping Beauty is awake. Never a dull moment in this show is there?

Why did Angela make that deal? Was Angela also married when she slept with Don Romulo? Why didn't Don Romulo insist he give Andres his name if she was not married? Or did he turn his back on her because he was married to Teresa and if so why did Angela sleep with him? Did Teresa have that much power early in the marriage Angela feared for her and Andres life?
So, did Julio steal to have running away money on top of room and board and a safe hiding spot?

I liked the Melibea scene very much but never crossed my head she was going to do that to Genaro. Of course, being a business woman like she is, no la brinca sin huarache (does everything to her advantage).

So, Andrés came out of his ellipsis. What could Julio stop right now from leaving, make sure every single miner's life i snot in danger anymore?

Thank you Tofie. Those are all good questions. If I had to guess, Romulo was already married to Teresa, but struck up a friendship with Angela and they may have spent a lot of time together talking and probably falling in love. Then she got pregnant.

cathyx--Can't thank you enough for the recap. I'm finally all caught up--being a whole week behind. Thanks to the job all the recappers did also, I enjoyed reading them at breakfast and all through lunch!
cathyx--I'm particularly grateful for the conversation between Teresa and Angela. I understood the gist of the "confession-session" but I couldn't hear it above the volume of the music. I figured Romulo loved Angela and not Teresa. The rest is history.
Angela kept Andres to keep him safe....but also to keep him with her.
I'm beginning to feel a little more sympathy for Belen in her desperation and exhibiting maternal instincts. But she is still trying to get her mitts on Andres' supposed inheritance with a one-sided marriage. As she rocked Baby #1 (Alfredo, Jr.), she kept saying, mamma is here. I'm sure if all things were equal for girls like her, she'd want to keep both babies--based on what we are seeing.
Ok, let's get to the bottle of fake virgin blood. I understand why Isa kept it in Diego's bathroom, but what on earth led him to zero in on it (other than plot device). So, let's take plot device a little further. Even in those days, athletic girls often stretched their hymens or some had thin ones or none at all. It shouldn't have been that hard for Isa to have come up a valid excuse, if Diego had questioned her. (She did go to medical school for heavens' sakes.)
Diego is definitely on the horns of a dilemma. If he tries to "return" the damaged goods, it won't look good at all--someone, as Queen Elizabeth said in Shakespeare in Love, "has plucked her" and it wasn't Diego. That would be a shame on his manhood. He will more likely keep his mouth shut about it. But he may take it out on Isabel and try to find out who had plucked her.
Ay, Julio, you are in trouble. At least you didn't suffer from galanbesoparalysis. You pushed Cecelia off very quickly.
Ayala is clearly smitten, but doesn't know how else to approach Matilde, thus trying the medical-scientific knowledge route. Sadly, I think this is going to be a one-sided love. They certainly would make a good team, working together to advance scientific investigation. Clearly, Matilde wants to be a doctor.
Pablo--Thank you for the Ramera* vocabulary. (*I think you left this one off) But lordy, there seem to be more words for a woman with this occupation than names for doctors, nurses, wives and husbands all put together.

cathyx--I'm particularly grateful for the conversation between Teresa and Angela. I understood the gist of the "confession-session" but I couldn't hear it above the volume of the music. I figured Romulo loved Angela and not Teresa. The rest is history.
Angela kept Andres to keep him safe....but also to keep him with her.
I'm beginning to feel a little more sympathy for Belen in her desperation and exhibiting maternal instincts. But she is still trying to get her mitts on Andres' supposed inheritance with a one-sided marriage. As she rocked Baby #1 (Alfredo, Jr.), she kept saying, mamma is here. I'm sure if all things were equal for girls like her, she'd want to keep both babies--based on what we are seeing.
Ok, let's get to the bottle of fake virgin blood. I understand why Isa kept it in Diego's bathroom, but what on earth led him to zero in on it (other than plot device). So, let's take plot device a little further. Even in those days, athletic girls often stretched their hymens or some had thin ones or none at all. It shouldn't have been that hard for Isa to have come up a valid excuse, if Diego had questioned her. (She did go to medical school for heavens' sakes.)
Diego is definitely on the horns of a dilemma. If he tries to "return" the damaged goods, it won't look good at all--someone, as Queen Elizabeth said in Shakespeare in Love, "has plucked her" and it wasn't Diego. That would be a shame on his manhood. He will more likely keep his mouth shut about it. But he may take it out on Isabel and try to find out who had plucked her.
Ay, Julio, you are in trouble. At least you didn't suffer from galanbesoparalysis. You pushed Cecelia off very quickly.
Ayala is clearly smitten, but doesn't know how else to approach Matilde, thus trying the medical-scientific knowledge route. Sadly, I think this is going to be a one-sided love. But considering it looks like she was keeping tabs on every meal he ate, and any other "services" she considers she supplied him, she sees him more as a possession than a partner. Much like how Diego sees Isa.

In addition to learning that Teresa resented that Romulo loved Angela and not her, Teresa also spoke to someone (I think Diego) this episode about always having to take a backseat to Romulo's generosity towards others. Basically, it seems like he was a good man who showed care and kindness towards others. The question is, why the heck did he marry Teresa? She obviously managed to fool him long enough to get him to marry her.
There is a lot bubbling under the surface of this relationship between Angela and Teresa, and I'm enjoying learning more, bit by bit.
As for Ben, from the beginning it has seemed like he has a crush on Angela, and he enjoys kissing Teresa's butt. But the more he tries to kiss Teresa's butt, the more she goes out of her way to make him look like a fool. And the more he tries to impress the Angela, the more he just ends up looking like a jerk in front of her.

Perhaps Don Romulo was the one that gave Angela and Andres cover while alive (there is a history of friendship between Isabel and Andres) and the deal between Angela and Teresa made on his passing. The letter even in the right hands is a bomb and Angela & Andres would have a fight on their hands. One they are ill equipped to fight.

I've got to say, this was the first episode where I was a little bored. Not a whole lot happened to advance the story (except Andres waking up in the last 2 seconds.) But I suppose I'm also losing interest because of the whole Isabel/Diego fiasco. I can't stand to watch their scenes together. I really hope Isabel does something to redeem herself because I really don't see why Julio can still be in love with her.

Ok, rewatched the scene. Her is word for word:
"Quiet", Cecilia goes in for the kiss. He pushes her away, saying Cecilia, please. She tells him to be quiet or she will shout that she is his wife.
So maybe she really isn't, just threatening to shout that she is. But as of yet, we don't know.

The time jump was the beginning of season 2 in the Spanish series so if they are still following along with the same storylines, maybe they're just referring to that, a new "season" for El Hotel.

I am not so sure. The only thing similar between this two works, are that both are set in a Hotel (and most of the protagonists). This storyline is totally different, some characters disappeared or were changed and the plot is totally different. Maybe the only thing in common is the love triangle between Julio, Diego and Isabel and some other minor stuff on secondary characters.

Teresa is very cavalier about putting her kids in situations that are both emotionally and physically dangerous for them. But then we she sees the devastating results, like Sofia losing her mind or becoming an addict, or Felipe falling further into alcoholism and becoming more bitter, she feels bad for like a millisecond, then she carries on. Business as usual. She has basically been telling Diego to beat Isa to control her for a while now, without coming right out and saying it. I'm sure she'll grimace and maybe complain the first time she sees black and blue Isa. But then she'll get over and carry on. As long as she still has her hotel and status.
Teresa is just determined to get things done her way, even if she has to force others to comply to get it, by hook or by crook. No wonder Romulo was attracted to Angela and saw her more as a companion than Teresa.
Now Diego has the upper hand, so what will she do to eliminate that? Would she go so far as to kill him or have him killed?

Everything you said Vivi...so agree. To me Teresa is an opportunist, probably why using Belen was a means to an end because she knew one when she saw one. I have often wondered if Teresa started at the bottom of the class chain and her successful marriage to Rom moved her up.
The fact she has almost no motherly instincts or can so quickly switch them off when it suits her indicates to me as well that she may have had her children as a means to keep that marriage. Once she had kids, and the hotel thrived, it would have been a social and business disaster for Rom as well to have such a scandal be revealed. Angela may have been the surrogate mother to all those kids...look at her and Sophia. So at the time, it worked for all parties. Teresa may have hated that part of the marriage, Angela kept Rom happy, and Teresa knew she had her mitts on the part she wanted - the hotel and the social standing. She wasn't counting on hubby putting in writing what was what and trying to make good to Andres on his deathbed. We're so used to TNs where the woman never has sex with anyone except the man she's intended to end up with, but I would hope that goes out the door with this TN because it's so different from the usual gak. So I can assume that Isabel will likely perform her wifely duty, but not be into it at all, maybe even thinking of the great time she had with Julio while it's going on. The scenes of Diego having sex with Belen and Cristina showed the women loving it. I doubt we will see Isabel even faking any enjoyment at all.

In 1908 this whole virginity obsession crap is still authentic. I have less of an issue with it here than in more modern stories where that obsession points to male insecurity.

Oh, I agree. The idea of sleeping around with the new freedoms was VERY new and not generally accepted at all. Frankly, I was stunned that Isa was so willing to sleep with Julio when she did.

Please keep away from hints about the "original." At least some of us hope to watch it some time, especially if the plot will be different enough to make it interesting, so even after a given point in the proceedings in this show, specific comparisons with Gran Hotel would really constitute spoilers.
On the other hand, I can imagine that it would be quite frustrating not being able to discuss the various plot differences and characters in real time as the current show unfolds. Stuff that might not be "big" enough to warrant discussion down the road at the conclusion of this show might well be quite interesting and enjoyable along the way.
Would it be possible to create a separate thread so those who have seen the original show can discuss the differences and so forth amongst themselves? Based on what has been said about spammers and abusers of threads that remain open too long, I suppose it would have to be closed and restarted from time to time, perhaps the Friday recapper could also open a separate "Gran v. Isa could tell Diego that the mysterious red liquid in the bottle was some sort of Mercurochrome and was to be used to treat infections, although I don't know if it was available in Mexico in that time period.
All these ideas of what Isabel could use to explain what is in the bottle doesn't explain why she had it in his bathroom on their wedding night.

I just saw the Univision's avances and the voice off says that in this new phase there will be surprises nobody has ever imagined. On the screen we can see Teresa very upset questioning Diego what are this ''meretrices' doing here, and he said they paid 5 times the price for the rooms. Julio is leaving (finally) but not without saying good bye to Isabel (what I think is going to make him stay). Theres more but they show it very quickly and my memory is only 2MB.

Oh, I remember! They promise a ''storm of emotions''!! Maybe after the mine collapsing there will be a hurricane and the hospital will require Isabel again so the ''noche de bodas'' gets postponed one more time?
