El Hotel de los Secretos #41, 3/23/16: Detective Dagoberto Suarez, At Your Service!
Isabel is arguing with Jacinto about how upset Diego is
going to be with him for letting her enter through the servants’ entrance, when
they run into Angela, who’s trying to see where the assailant who attacked her and
Andres went. She tells Isabel and Jacinto that someone just tried to kill
Andres! She rushes back to Andres with Isa and Jacinto following. They see the
blood on the back of Angela’s head where she was bonked, and then they find the
filled syringe and the jug used to hit Angela. Isa makes sure no one touches
either item, and wraps them up to preserve fingerprints. Andres wakes up and is
utterly perplexed to hear that someone tried to kill him.
Isabel goes to Diego’s dark office to call Ayala to tell him
about the murder attempt. She’s unpleasantly surprised when the light goes on,
and she sees her husband rising like a vampire from the couch. She continues
with her call, and takes about five beats too long to remember to mention her
married name to Detective Ayala. Diego notices. Ayala, whose hands are tied by
Teresa’s judge friend, has to tell Isa that he can’t go out to the hotel,
despite the gravity of the situation. He promises to be there first thing in
the morning, and asks her to make sure the evidence is kept safe, and Andres
not be left alone. He’s sure the attacker won’t try again tonight. But lock the
door! Diego scoffs, and wonders who would want to kill a mere waiter. Isa
ignores him.
The next morning, newly widowed and weeping kitchen maid Michaela returns to work. Lupe greets her with open arms. Ben tells her he doesn’t want to see her bawling in the kitchen. Nice.
Isa’s also fighting insensitivity upstairs. Diego and Teresa
don’t want the police around, as it will ruin the patrons’ perception of the
hotel. Isa doesn’t give a flying fig about perception or appearances, when one
of the most beloved people in the hotel, someone she considers a brother
(*cough, cough*) is in danger! Teresa gives a bit, and tells Isa and Angela
that the police need to conduct their investigations with more formality. Angela
wants to know if Teresa wants to deal with the police, or shall she? Teresa
says she’ll do it. Once outside the room, Angela thanks Isa for going to bat
for Andres. “Andres is like my family,
and I won’t let anything happen to him.” “You’re as noble as your father.”
In the dining room, Cecilia and her girls have taken over as
the most popular spectacle in the hotel, while Felipe has become persona non
grata. Cecilia approaches Felipe, and proposes a hedonistic alliance of sorts.
She’s already bored with the place. “Are
you a woman who enjoys the night?” Indeed, she is.
Ayala waits patiently for Dagoberto to finally show up so
that they can go to the hotel to investigate Andres’ near murder. Dagoberto has
other plans. He’ll go alone, and AGENT Ayala can stay and clean. And by the
way, it’s Detective Suarez now. “Here,
the only detective is me.”
Angela briskly gives all the maids their orders for the day,
but Lupe knows the events of last night mean that she needs some TLC. He has
prepared some special hot chocolate, and set a little table with biscuits for
her. Ben gruffs in and dismisses Lupe’s efforts, saying Angela is too much of a
professional to waste time with this foolishness. Angela disagrees. She sits
and sips her chocolate and says it was just what she needed. Ben is miffed.
Lupe smiles.
Julio is working hard at the hospital, helping the burned
and injured men. Doc Vic pulls him aside and checks up on him. “Mr. Espinoza, how are your lungs?... And what’s
between you and Isabel?” What?! Julio is totally taken aback by this out of
left field question and pretends he doesn’t know what the Doc is speaking
about. Doc Vic mentions the stolen kisses, secret meetings, and furtive glances
he’s seen with his own eyes. Julio is saved by the bell when Isa calls to tell
him about the attempt on Andres’ life. He wants to rush back, but she tells him
not to fear, Ayala is on the way.
Belen is also clueless about the events of the previous
night. She’s wrapped Baby #2 up in her serape and is about to take him to see
Andres, when Angela comes into her room.
“What are you doing with Sofia’s
baby down here, and wrapped in your serape?...Last night someone tried to kill
Andres!” Angela and Belen have two very different reactions to this. Angela
thinks this means that more than ever, they should keep quiet about Andres’
paternity. Otherwise, he will be in more danger. Belen thinks Andres needs to
learn the truth NOW, and start shouting it from the rooftops. And she’s going
to make sure that happens.
“For God’s sake,
girl!...I’ve lived with the Alarcon almost 30 years, and you know what I’ve
learned from them? That Sofia has nightmares every night. That Felipe’s soul
hurts so much that he sleeps with the first woman he sees, and when he wakes
sober, he finds that there isn’t enough wine in the world to escape from
himself. That the bed of Teresa, is still perfectly made half the mornings
because she’s afraid to close her eyes or else her sins will pursue her.”
Angela asks if this is really the life Belen wants for her
child? Yes! She’d much rather rich people’s misery, than waiting for the scraps
that fall from their table!
Their argument is cut short, when Sofia comes looking for
Belen, with hungry Baby #1 in hand! Angela exits Belen’s room, as Belen and
Baby #2 hide behind the door. Angela keeps her cool when she sees Baby #1, and
convinces Sofia to hand her the baby to give to Belen later. Angela then goes into
the room, deposits Baby #1 on the bed, and tells Belen that the two of them
will speak later.
Julio is trying to find out if Doc Vic is friend or foe, but
Matilde is not forthcoming, to say the least. Violeta arrives, and starts
singing for the blinded miner who’s sweet on her. “I didn’t think you’d come back. Why did you go?” Violeta makes up
a fairytale life where she has parents, and siblings she needs to care for. He
tells her he knows she’s beautiful, because he’s speaking of her soul. (Jacinto,
take note.)
Isabel is unpleasantly surprised to see Detective Dagoberto
Suarez arrive, instead of Ayala. While he goes bumbling up the hotel stairs,
Isabel takes off to town on her bicycle. Dagoberto first questions Andres.
Problem is, he somehow misplaced his notebook and his pencil. He asks Andres if
he can tear a page out of his Bible to take notes! No. He then asks how things
went down. Well, since Andres was sleeping at the time, he doesn’t really know.
Dago should speak to Angela. Dago continues to question Andres-- “What were you doing while you were
sleeping?” Say what?
At the cantina/brothel, Genaro is feeling horny and selects
Melibea to scratch his itch. They go back to her cot, and Genaro loses it when
he sees she has a pillow. Where did she get the money for such luxury?! He
knows she’s trying to pull the wool over his eyes!
Isabel stops off at the hospital and tells Julio he needs to
come with her to see Ayala at the police station, right now!
Alfredo is scolding Belen for not being punctual and
available, as she’s leaving their suite after feeding Baby #1. She meets Angela
in the hallway. Angela can’t believe she fooled her and everyone this way.
Angela even felt for her, yet she was playing this game with the two babies.
Belen takes off the mask, and tells Angela that she doesn’t believe in playing
by the basic rules of decency. Angela threatens to tell Andres about Baby #2.
She’s sure he will kick her to the curb when he finds out what kind of sick
game she’s playing. “He already knows.
And the only thing he asked me, was to marry him.”
Downstairs, Natalia serves Andres his meal. He excitedly
tells her his secret. He’s going to marry Belen very soon. He’s not going to
let the Gold Knife Killer, a High-strung Horse, and a Morphine Murderer steal
his future. Sure, his mother can’t stand Belen, but when they’re a family, it
will all be different. (Poor sap.) Natalia tries hard to hold back her tears.
Teresa and Diego ply foolish Dago with a glass of fine
liquor, as they lead his conclusions. “So,
you found nothing, right?” Dago confirms there was no real proof of a
murder attempt, and Angela likely got that bump on her head from being clumsy.
They send him on his way, and Teresa can’t understand why Diego still looks so
uptight when they now have Ayala out of their hair, and this fool under their
thumb. Ah, but Diego can’t relax, when he doesn’t know where his wayward wife
is.
If Diego knew that at that moment, Isabel was with the
annoyingly persistent Ayala, and her (ex) lover/virginity stealer Julio, he
would pop a jaw muscle. Ayala dusts the syringe and jug for prints and
finds…NOTHING. As the audience knew, the killer wore gloves. “The person who tried to hurt Andres, knows
my methods and used preventative measures… gloves.” Ayala thinks this
killer is smarter than the average killer, and doesn’t fit the MO of the Gold
Knife Killer. “This person is smart and
calculating.” Isabel wonders what it could all be about. “I’m sorry to tell you, that it has to do
with your father.” Isabel is impactada.

Julio and Isa told him about the letter after Cris told them about it. He knows Cris feared for her life because of that letter. We don't yet know why he thinks the letter is related to the attempt on Andres. That will have to be revealed in the next episode.
Just started watching, haven't read the recap or watched past 10 minutes, but I just wanted to say that I think the person who wanted to kill Andres was Garrido, on Diego's orders.

I agree about it being Garrido, that was a bulky figure. Diego doesn't want Andres in on the inheritance. Teresa wouldn't want the shame of everyone knowing about her esposo's indiscretions, plus sharing an inheritance.

I thought that Doc already knew about Isabel and Julio. When he would council her when she was troubled, I figured he had figured all that out.

I think the coat was bulky, but I don't think the person in it was. In any case, another thing to add to the list of mysteries. How many killers can there be running around out there?!
The Gold Knife Killer, who kills on the full moon each month. He succeeded in killing numerous people (first women, then added men to his MO) across the countryside, but failed at killing Cris, Isabel, and Andres (bad track record with the Hotel folks).
The Mallet Mauler, who killed Cristina (was it Belen?). Technically, now a closed case, since Alfredo confessed to killing Cris in self defense, in order to protect Sofia.
The Morphine Murderer, who tried and failed to kill Andres.
The Gold Knife Killer, who kills on the full moon each month. He succeeded in killing numerous people (first women, then added men to his MO) across the countryside, but failed at killing Cris, Isabel, and Andres (bad track record with the Hotel folks).

Cathyx- Doc has figured it out. But Isabel has never said a name, and they've never just come right out and spoken about it. I think Doc wants to have a man to man conversation with Julio about it. The kind of frank conversation it wouldn't be proper for him to have with Isabel on the subject. But he wants to first hear from him what his intentions are with Isabel.

TO be honest, we are so use to so much action and intrigue each episode, this one felt rather quiet and uneventful. of course, there was Angela finding the baby behind door #2. Thinking about events and conversations though, there are always those subtle conversations and movements that still need to be watched and remembered...I've come to the conclusion in this show that nothing is put in without a reason.
Thank you for the verbatim, by the way, on how Angela talked about the family to Belen. The comments on the children were sad, especially about Felippe. And when he sat away from the "family" table where he had always sat before and sat alone in the dining room, I admit it, made me sad for him. he's not eveil, he's just a mess.
I did enjoy seeing Isa standing her ground to her mother and hubby. And I also think that may be why the Doc confronted Julio. He sees Isa as a married woman who still doesn't want to be home and when she has a problem or needs something done, it's Julio she runs to. I agree, that was a man-to-man conversation, almost like a father would have the "what are your intentions with my daughter", except this woman is married now and the Doc still sees the goo-goo eyes happening.

Daisynjay- I enjoy these quiet episodes too. I feel like Diego is on slow burn right now, and he's about to blow. That won't be pretty. Isabel is courting danger.
And, Vivi, Isa is starting to NOT be intimidated by him...which we know is not good since he HAS to be in control. I'm almost afraid to watch if those two get alone finally.
Thinking more of Belen being a loose cannon who only wants to live the fine life, maybe she should go talk to CeCe...but honestly, there has to be a Stop Card with her...only one I can think of is what she did to Violetta. Andres wouldn't believe his mother, but enough people find out and Violetta confirms, who knows. I hate to see Andres destroyed because we know he will be when all this comes out. Seems every lie and secret falls back to who he is. Except maybe the full moon murders...and who knows on those too, in some convoluted way.

I had a really hard time hearing anything during the scenes at the hospital. The background noise was so loud!
Didn't Alfredo also mention the letter to Ayala when he was "confessing" to killing Cristina?
I actually agree with Belen about spilling the beans (but not her motives to do so). Andres would be safer if everyone knew. He certainly isn't safe right now and he never will be. It's not like the killer is just going to stop trying to kill him... But if everyone knew that he was Romulo's son and the true heir, then it would be easier to figure out (actually, it would be way obvious) who wanted to harm Andres and why.
I still don't really get why Angela thought that keeping quiet would mean Andres would be safe all those years. Safe from whom or what?? Romulo loved him, and his siblings didn't know about him, so who would have hurt him besides Teresa? And if Teresa did threaten to harm him, why would Angela still work for her, and help her keep secrets, etc.? or at least not suspect her in the recent attempted murder of Andres?? I just really don't get it. I hope there is something more to this story because it's all a bit unbelievable at this point.

Vivi--Wonderful recap of what I thought was an event-filled episode. No, there was no fighting, no blood anywhere, no noche de boda, but we got more insight into the tangled family ties.
Bumbling Dagoberto is a riot, if it weren't for the fact that he holds a position of authority over Ayala in some important investigations. OTOH, Ayala hasn't been doing such a great job, as the judge pointed out. But I do not understand where the judge gets his authority to rearrange the positions. Must be some obscure telenovela law. Of course, this seems to be a one-horse, er--one-detective town, so who knows to whom Dagoberto reports. He does have other policemen who go on patrol with him.
Teresa and Diego only *think* they have Dagoberto under control.
I'm still thinking Teresa or Diego had the most to lose with Andres alive. But then why wait until he came to, to dispatch him. Surely they had plenty of time during the last six months to do him in quietly and everyone would assume he died naturally from his injuries. Ok, so we wouldn't have a story of multiple killers running around loose.
Belen was stupid to not copy the letter and find a better hiding place for the original. Right now she has nothing that can be used as evidence that Romulo left Andres anything OR that Diego was a lying thieving conniving dangerous dude. She gains nothing by announcing Andres is really Romulo's son. As an unrecognized bastard, he would not be eligible to inherit anything, unless, of course, Isa would want to share some of hers with him.
Which brings me to another point that has me scratching--my head, da-mit. What of the inheritance? Do we know what was in the will? Was it only the Hotel and its property? No money? Did Teresa remain in control of everything and not a share to the children? Or did they cede the power of attorney for her to run the hotel.
We know at the beginning of the story that Romulo was two-years dead and the Hotel was a financial disaster (waste, fraud and mismanagement rears its ugly head even in turn of the century Mexico).
Still, she managed to pay the monastery to keep Felipe away from the hotel and has used money to pay off the judge and who knows how many others for favors. Did she ever pay Belen any money for the baby?
Ah, to be poor, but wealthy in the eyes of society, and to have enough left after paying blood money to dress beautifully night after night.

Great Recap. As usual, the English "cc's" were a mess. (Note: the other TNs running on Uni have very competent translators. Why, I wonder, with a production so major, would Uni not hire the best? Very annoying.)
Side note: The Mexican version is significantly different (perhaps better -- or not) than the Spain version for which only 2 seasons of 3 have been made available with English caps. i suggest that once Hotel wraps up and you have Netflix definitely watch The Grand Hotel. Granted the Spanish is a bit hard to get used to but it's worth it. Most rewarding as eye candy is Yon Gonzalez who plays Julio - talk about guapo....!!! And the acting is as good (if not better than) in the Spain version, although the Mexican story seems to hold together a bit more. Felipe is much too drunk (but hilarious) in the Mexican version; he look great in the friar's. (Franciscan?) habit.
Donna Teresa played by different actors are equally amazing. Sophia is more of a mess in the Mexican one than the Spain version. But do not watch the Spain version until after Hotel is finished or otherwise you will get confuse the plots.

Anita- We only have Teresa's and Diego's word that the hotel was in financial ruin, and Diego was the savior. We've seen no proof of that, and it's only been used to pressure Isa to be grateful and accommodating to Diego. If the hotel had financial troubles, I'm more inclined to believe those two caused it.

How great is Lupe? I loved his little smile to Angela (that she didn't see) after she dismissed Ben. Her stoicism is heart-breaking and she needs Lupe's kindness. And Ben needs to be the next murder victim (of he's not the killer).
I'm with Belen since she's seen that keeping the secret didn't protect Andres. Sure, she just wants the money, but that's fine. Andres probably would turn it down anyway, and hopefully by then she'll have toned down the greed. He just needs enough to get himself and his family the heck away from the place.
I'm more disappointed in Dagoberto. I hoped he's realize that he's kind of an idiot and let Ayala stay in the investigation, but nope! Did Ayala say this had to do with Isa's father or with her parents? I thought he meant that he thought only her mother understood the whole fingerprint thing and was therefore a suspect. I don't have captions though so my understanding is suspect.

Did Ayala say this had to do with Isa's father or with her parents? I thought he meant that he thought only her mother understood the whole fingerprint thing and was therefore a suspect. I don't have captions though so my understanding is suspect.

I've been inclined to NOT believe in the financial ruin story as it may have been Teresa's way to let Diego worm his way into the fold. There had to be SOMETHING that happened between those two that he got his mitts into the place. Either that or she is a horrible business woman and he's a loan shark...we've seen him skimming from the hotel already. And he bought a hospital for Isa...the man has money. But I don't think there are issues now. We should see that in the way the hotel is run, or cutting staffs, etc. And we don't. The rich won't go somewhere if they aren't getting the best of everything and seems fine to me in that regard.

Thanks Vivi. I went to sleep at about 10:05 last night, so all of this recap was news to me! I'm definitely going to have to watch this one, because I want to see the look on Angela's face when she realizes there are two babies.
What the hell is wrong with Benjamin? Is he experiencing that nagging tension that waxes along with the moon, and is relieved only by killing?
Also... Isabel rode a bicycle? Does that mean she wore pants (or at least a riding skirt)? White, by any chance??
Interesting speculation about Andres' attempted killer. I don't think it was Garrido. Ayala said that person was SMART!

Kelly- I love Lupe too. If Ben is one of the killers, I would think Lupe would be high up on his list of victims, since he always looks bad in comparison to him in front of Angela. Maybe, if he would just try being nicer to people, he wouldn’t always end up looking like a fool. The only person he seems to have any outward affection for is Andres, which is a mystery. And Teresa, whom he’s always kissing up to.

I'm glad Angela knows about baby #2 now. She knows that if it gets out, that would be the end of Belen and baby#2. And with Andres keen on marrying Belen, knowing about both babies, and his happiness associated with both, Angela will do whatever it takes to make sure that Teresa doesn't find out about Baby #2.
But, and this is a big but, baby #2 can not stay there for very much longer. The twin thing messes everything up.

Cathyx- I agree that it’s good that Angela knows about Baby #2. That little guy needs someone else looking out for him.
I also agree that the truth should come out about Andres, regardless of where the letter is, or what is says. It will be interesting to see how Andres reacts to the news and if he pushes Angela away after the reveal. Certainly, if Belen is the first to tell him, she will shape the narrative in a way to make Angela look bad. Angela needs to tell him first. The other interesting reactions will be Isa and Felipe. Isa will be happy. Felipe? Not so much. But he is a wildcard. Sofia seems to already know, and doesn’t have a problem with her brother being a servant. She doesn’t seem to show any special regard for Andres, even knowing he’s her brother.

Does anyone else fear that Sofia might kill the baby? Every time it's crying and she starts to lose it, I'm so afraid she'll do whatever it takes to shut it up.

I think the doc has been too busy with the hurt miners at the hospital to focus on Sofia. Plus, he doesn't know how bad off she is, since it was Teresa who had really been feeding her habit, and Teresa who made her go cold turkey, without him knowing.
The previews certainly support your fear for the baby's safety in Sofia's care.

I think that Ben is nice to Andres because he wants to rack up points with Angela, knowing that the way to her heart is through her son, the light of her life. Too bad for him that Lupe already has that covered, in addition to all the other thoughtful things he does for her, both in and out of the kitchen.

I found this episode riveting. The closed captions in Spanish were poor on the Univision version but when I found the Hulu version on Roku, they were excellent.
I also loved Lupe's tender smile, knowing Angela valued her "chocolate with cinnamon" and the affection that came with it. They're still my star couple!

I don't think it is any of the good doctors business poking his nose in with Julio and Isabel and if they are smart will not admit to a thing. I still know not from whence he came. Is he a good guy or a bad guy and who's side is he really on? He covered for a sham pregnancy to trick Alfredo and complicit in taking Belen's child from her (all Belen got for the child was the initial 350 pesos Teresa gave her to leave town when she had Violeta).

Cristina hanging on to the letter for blackmail put HER in danger. Belen threatening to tell Andres (and become mistress of the manor as his wife) put HIM in danger.
Anita said that Belen was stupid not to copy the letter. I'm wondering if, in fact, she did copy it. Better yet, maybe the letter she gave to Diego WAS the copy (as I think someone suggested last week).
I'm thinking this because she seems awfully confident about Andres being honored as the heir. Either she's still got the letter, or the letter contained information about some way to prove it (for example, instructions to obtain a particular document from a certain lawyer). That would mean that Andres (or Belen on his behalf, if they'd been married) still needs to go somewhere and/or do something, but doesn't actually need the letter itself.

Could somebody please explain to me how Andres was in a coma for so long without food or water and did not die? With modern medicine he would have had a feeding tube and and IV. But back then, it did not exist! So how did he stay alive?
Vivi, which one was the time jump episode? I am re-watching these on Hulu now. I think the Hulu with the closed captioning is so much better and sometimes I think it has scenes I must have missed on Univision.
Cynthia- I believe it was episode 33. As Julio is heard in his letter to his mother, we see him feeding Andres at one point.
Thank you Vivi. I am so thankful for this blog. My Spanish is very poor and I miss half of what is going on because it flies right by me. But I'm getting better and these recaps are so very helpful.
