El Hotel de los Secretos #31, 3/9/16 Wednesday: All for the Proof of the Truth

·       Julio has snuck into his beloved’s bedroom but honestly we don’t know why—to talk about why he felt the need to abandon their eloping.  He hasn’t abandoned her, he says.  He’s close by and so is justice for his sister with him there as well.  Isabel says talk to the hand.  She, Viewerville senses, is having second thoughts about her Dear Diego letter. El Do or Die Gold-digger de Diego left that letter as if it were unread—what a heartbreak it must have been!  (If only he had a heart there instead of that rotted piece of cherry-pit.)   He takes care of her and she was careless and care free when it came to him.  (Someone may have a better grasp of the nuance here.) —and I do not??”  No, in a few words.   He only wants justice for his sister.  Hah!  He doesn’t know the meaning of the word! sayz she.   To Isa the meaning of the word justice has been expanded just a bit.   [Think ‘Social’.] Justice is not being so selfish as to think that his wounds are the deepest , nor his battles the most important to fight.  He tries to ask her forgiveness.  His mercurial maid won’t accept it.  “—Leave!  You leave, or…, or I will!!” Well, she’s right.  Julio is the most obdurate man she’s ever met.  He stays.  She exits stage right.
·
·        Jacinto, meanwhile, is trying to eat a bit of breakfast while Lupe chats and asks if he’s done anything with the news about his mama’s whereabouts in Little Rock—as in Arkansas, not Arizona.  Jacinto remains silent and moody.  He suddenly ups to upchuck outside.  (Personally that baby act he pulled with Violeta made me wanna upchuck.   What a WTF momento.)
·

·         Andres shows up to break up another verbal battle of the wits between Belen and Dona Angela.  Belen tries being sweet as sugar to her MIL-to-be, but Angie’s not playing that game this morning any more than any other morning.  Andres want’s to talk to the two of them in private downstairs.

·        Meanwhile, Felipe has gone to the monks and begs, prostrate, to become one of them.  He’s got to cleanse his soul.  The head monk warns him of the severity of this order and suggests monk hood isn’t necessary to atone of one’s earthly sins.  The monks, though, give him a chance. (Being dependent upon Dona Teresa Alarcon’s charity, none of them would dare deny Flippy his wish.)  Viewerville has their doubts about this and sooner than later, we see we weren’t wrong about this being just another whim
·
·        Belen, Andres and Angela enter the employee’s dining room.  Belen is all kissy-face with the smiling and eager Andres, much to his mama’s disgust.  He first wants Mama to thank Bel for getting him his job back at the hotel.  She swallows the bile an spits a gracious “thank you” out.  No need to thank her, Bel says, playing the innocent ingenue.  It’s what any future DIL would do for her MIL-to-be.  (Oh stick a sock in it!)  Andres is pleased as punch with his sweet-as-sugar sweetie pie’s ardent enthusiasm.  Andres asks his mama’s blessing to marry.  Belen sweetly adds it’s the day after tomorrow.  She’s speechless.  Andres asks again for her blessing and Belen kisses her hand, “—Yes, won’t you, Mama?”    Angela wisely masks her true feelings.  She gives it and sighs inwardly as Viewerville chokes back a couple of overpowering retches.
·
·        Meanwhile, in town, Detective Ayala is taking fingerprints off the mallet [mazo] and Dagoberto gets instruction in the history and value of fingerprints.  They head for the hotel despite Judge Barrera’s writ of a barred entry onto the premises.
·
·        The judge, meanwhile, is obstructing  justicia, as he explains to Dona Teresa that he’s temporarily prevented Ayala from nosing around there.  However, it seems the detective has some new sort of undeniable proof called a fingerprint.  The mallet supposedly has the fingerprint of the killer on it.  She tells him it’s probably not as undeniable as everyone claims [pregonar] just like her new electric lighting at the hotel, not exactly foolproof at all.
·
·        Dona Elise takes her dramatic leave of Alfredo and the hotel—one spectacular guilt trip that Freddy takes to heart, certainly.
·
·        Outside, one of the tradesmen/farmworkers at the hotel leaves Julio with a written note from a “mustachioed man” to meet him outside of the hotel.  Julio is taken to Ayala.

·        In the gardens, Dr. Vicario gives Isa a quick backgrounder in “hysteria” and advises that her sister, Sofia, is seriously mentally ill.
·
·        Ayala informs Julio that the judge revoked the order/injunction.  All the Alarcon’s have alibies.  Ayala cannot step foot in the hotel, but Julio can.  He suggests that Julio get him items that each one of the Alarcon family, including Diego (I presume?), has alone touched.
·
·        Teresa queries Angie over the sudden engagement and wedding between Andres and Belen.  Angie says there’s nothing to be done about it and she hopes Teresa will join them in the kitchen for the engagement toast.  The toast is held and Belen asks Benjamin to give her away as Lupe and Ange exchange knowing glances.  Lupe tells her he commiserates with her as both their kids seem to make stupid choices in love.  Teresa shows up and gives her compliments.  She then invites Bel up for a private toast with her.

·        Julio gives Isa Ayala’s message.
·
·        of words.

End parte 1~~~~~
===================================================

·     A bit later while Isa has been convinced to check her family’s personal items for fingerprints (“If they’ve got nothing to hide, then why should it matter?” were Ayala’s words), Teresa tells Diego and Sofia and Diego that Belen knows about the letter.  Sofia has told Freddy about the letter and how damaging it could be; she now argues with him about trying to steal  it or bargain for it back.  He refuses and refuses to allow her to do so either.  The doc shows up to give a bit of therapy along with a tranq and then offers to join Teresa on her jaunt into town.

·        On the way to town, Teresa and Lazaro seems to flirt.  They head unexpectedly for the cantina rather than the bakery.

·        The monks find Flippy flopped down and in a drunken slumber fest for one.  They decide to send work to Dona Teresa to come fetch him.

·        Teresa and Lazaro arrive at the cantina so she can pay off his debts.  Lazaro pays instead, like a gentleman would….. She gives Jacinto orders to stay and watch out for her son in case he shows up at the cantina and to send word to the hotel to fetch him.

·        The doc and she head off for the panaderia…..

·        Teresa and Lazaro arrive at the police station to give her fingerprints to him.  She’s worried he’ll be dead.  He says he’ll watch out for him.
·        Jacinto throws pebbles at Violeta’s window.

·        Sofia looks in Belen’s room for the letter.  Angie finds her there and Sofia lies that she’s looking for a larger pregnancy-size dress of Belen’s to borrow.

·        Julio is supposed to get a carriage for Isa to go to Ayala’s with the prints he’s waiting on.

·         Jacinto and Vi escape to the pharmacist’s while he's supposedly watching the cantina door for Flippy.  He defends her honor and asks if the old guy can write a letter for him to his mother in Little Rock.  He does.

·        The objects with Sofia’s fingerprints also have Isabel’s on them.  Why?  Julio defends her….

Great Jardineria, thank you

Loved Isabel calling Julio out for what he is

The method nor chain of custody for evidence obviously not important

Thanks, Jardinera. I'm still amazed that we're not even halfway through the story yet.

I enjoyed Felipe's penance of scrubbing the floor alongside so many of his female victims... but did I miss Eugenia?? I didn't see her! Maybe she'll show up in some future penance/hallucination.

I thought the issue with the object that Isabel brought to Ayala was that it had ONLY Isabel's prints, and not Sofia's. Did I get that wrong? I took that to mean that Sofi (or Alfredo) had proactively (and paranoidly) wiped everything down in her room.

Speaking of Sofi, she certainly is developing a taste for laudanum. I hope the doctor is taking precautions, because the last thing she needs is a habit.

Thanks, Jardinera.

Julie- Since Sofia confessed to Isabel how she and her mother found Cris, and how she (Sofia) cleaned up the blood, picked up the mallet and hid it, Isa knows Sofia's prints will match the mallet print. She decided either to replace Sofia's item with one of her own, or to wipe Sofia's item and place her own print on it. She's trying to protect her sister, especially after hearing and seeing how fragile her mental health is.

Not in the recap, but loved the showdown between Belen and Teresa, when Teresa choked her and Belen revealed she has the letter. Not very smart of Belen. Now Teresa has Diego gunning for her, and has started the search for the letter in Belen's things. Wonder where she's hidden it?

Yeah, Sofia looks like she's becoming an addict, but it also looks like the laudanum is the only thing keeping her from falling into hysterical fits on a regular basis.

I felt for Angela having hold her tongue and true thoughts about Belen. Well, she already warned Andres. All she can do now is be supportive and be there to pick up the pieces when Belen destroys him. Natalia also did not look pleased about the upcoming nuptials.

Thank you, Jardinera. Love your recaps.

Jacinto jumped up to upchuck because he saw Garrido limp in through the kitchen and give him a death stare. I don't know if he (Jacinto) thought Garrido was dead from the beating.

Elisa cracked me up with her widow's attire, complete with veil over her face, I assume to symbolically and dramatically tell Fredo "you are dead to me!" LOL

Nick

Elisa was certainly in fine dramatic form in her mourning clothes. I can't believe she's actually leaving the hotel. I'm sure she'll be back.

Felipe was another one who cracked me up this episode. When he whipped himself three times, and was like, Uhm..that's enough of that. He couldn't even live the monks' life for one day. He does have to find some solution for his conscience though if he doesn't want to keep being haunted by his exes. One of them even mentioned the child he fathered with her, so he's got some kids running around out there!

By the way, there will be no show airing tonight, but instead the presidential debates. I'm off the hook for a recap tonight.

Yeah, Felipe doesn't even get an A for effort on his penance. They poor guy just can't get anything right. He should just send some money for that child we now know he has, and stay away from alcohol. And definitely don't let him near the convent!

Jardinera--This is one of the few times I've read a recap before viewing. This is what generally happens: if I read the book first, I don't like the movie as much; if I see the movie first, I don't like the book as much.

Hotel is so different. With all the build up over the last 30 episodes, the scenes and personalities are well formed in my head.

Your recap was like reading the book AND seeing the movie at the same time. Thank you, so much.

H*** of a day and thanks to you Jardinera, I can end it with a smile, pack up the laptop and go home. Great recap!!

Honestly, Elisa will never win any mother of the year awards, but how smart of her to pack the perfect mourning clothes when she travels. Absolute hoot watching her send herself off to grieve.

And I did enjoy the whole Felippe journey. I didn't see him totally flipping the switch to become all holy and good, but I was hoping a little would rub off before heading back to the viper pit. He's better off with the brothers. The fellow scrubbers was a wonderful twist--I think he only saw those who are still living he took advantage of. Maybe Eugenia will haunt is dreams in another manner.

Loved the references on the crime solving in relation to the times. CSI:El Hotel. I didn't think that fingerprint was all that clear, but it might have been the screen angle. Never thought that Isa is swapping fingerprints with Sophia--c'mon girl. Is she sabotaging herself sub-conscientiously-- Julio goes to jail, so she might as well too?

I wonder Alfie isn't questioning drugging his pregnant wife. I'm not as up on medical practices of the time, but would that be acceptable to use such a powerful drug during a pregnancy? We know she's not, but surprised the doctor shows Alfie he's doing it.

Daisynjay

Daisynjay- If people were still drinking and smoking up a storm during pregnancy up until not long ago, I doubt many would question a doctor about the affect of drugs on the baby at the turn of the last century.

Wasn't Jimena among the scrubbers at the monastery? It was nice to meet some of his other past conquests. I'm surprised there weren't more, but I suppose these were just the most memorable.

Off Topic, but don't know where to put this.

Univision has redesigned its web site (UVideos). The videos for the "capítulos" now contain what appear to be transcriptions of the entire episode. (I've not checked; the site went up either some time yesterday - the 8th - or today.) The videos for the "resumen" are much shorter, but I haven't had time to figure out if the dialogue is selected from the entire episode or if it is a summary of some kind.

In any case, the transcriptions may be useful if your CC isn't working or you are not sure about a particular scene.

Please pass along.

I was also surprised that Eugenia was not among the women scrubbing the floor. I do think I saw Jimena (Ximena?) though.

Elisa being so overly dramatic was hilarious!

The excessive use of laudanum isn't surprising. Back then even cocaine was used for everything. Have a toothache? Take some cocaine!

I also assumed that Isabel had wiped off Sofia's prints to protect her.

The transcripts for the full episodes have been up for a few weeks now. (UVideos has been around for a while but Univision is definitely changing some stuff on their website.) It was a nice surprise! Good to hear there are transcripts for the resumen now too. They seem to be missing a few sentences here and there, but better than nothing. I wish they would just stop making the Avance for the next episode so darn hard to find! I always have to click around endlessly to find them.

Sure wish Isabel and Julio could be happy for more than one episode at a time... I will be so disappointed if she agrees to marry Diego again. Gross.

Thanks to all and come newbies to my recap night. :?))

Gracias, Keri. It took me a while to catch up because it's a crazy week for me.

Loved the silly attempt of Felipe's to become a monk. We all knew he would fail at this. But if he does have a child out there Mama will really get on his case and his troubles are far from over.

Poor Andres. Someone needs to educate him about women. He's good at his work but a complete simpleton about duplicitous women. Belen is going to chew him up and spit him out if someone doesn't stop her.

I'm surprised that Alfredo hasn't completely given up on Sofia and her hysterics. How much does he know about Teresa's responsibility for that? Obviously he still doesn't know she isn't pregnant but now that his own toxic mama is leaving (we know that can't be forever) he will have more time and energy to discover this.

Thank you jardinera.

Not sure Belen is going to be alive much longer. Teresa knows she has the letter, and Belen said she's not going to hand over the baby and she's marrying Andres. Teresa knows what's in the letter and can figure out that Belen thinks she's going to expose the secret so that she can be the wife of the hotel heir. Teresa will need to eliminate this problem before the info gets out.

UA - let's hope that Alfredo does indeed focus his time and energy on Sofia and not on birdwatching.

Thanks Jardinera.

Disagree about Isabel calling Julio on his sense of Justice. Both Julio and Isabel see things from their own familial perspective and both have less than stellar families (Julio has Christina's memory to defend and our lovely Isabel is saddled with Donna Teresa, loco Sofia (a murderess), her brother Felipe (a drunken cowardly, selfish opportunist). On balance Christina has a harder task to defend her family in the interests of 'justice'. And throw in Diego in the mix, Christina really can't defend the maxim "Fiat Justitia, et pereat mundus!" (Let Justice prevail, even if the world perish!)

Thanks Jardinera...you have such a sassy, refreshing take on things. I was quite touched by Jacinto's need of Violeta's maternal tenderness, but I had to laugh thinking it made you want to upchuck. Love you amiga, we just have way different viewpoints!

Agree with everyone that by far the best scene of the night was the hilarious I'm in mourning-you no longer have a mama scene. With that dippy hat hiding her eyes and flopping around like a dead fish. Well played. Have seen the actress in many roles but never with this much comedic flair. Just great.

And enjoyed the comedy of Felipe's very half-heart attempt at scourging. The sadness of all the women he wronged, and the babies left to no doubt half-starve, was not amusing. His storyline is a very strange mix of comedy and pathos, humor and horror.

Thanks so much Jardinera. By the time this was up yesterday, I was gone from the computer and couldn't get back. So belated thanks indeed.

Thanks Julia and Jardinera for this week's recaps so far. I've been too wiped out from work by the time I get home to watch anything good that engages brain cells (this show) so I picked mindless stupidity instead (Osorio always delivers on that count!). But I loved reading the recaps to keep up.

How could Ayala trust that the objects brought to him had only the specified person's prints on them? Any number of people could have touched their things. Other family members and friends, housekeepers picking things up to clean. For that matter, even Sofia's prints on the mallet aren't necessarily incriminating. She could have touched the mallet any number of times while it was in her father's office. The murderer could have worn gloves and managed to not wipe off her prints while swiftly using it. We know that isn't how it happened, but Ayala can't rule out a lot of things by using prints.

I did see the bit with Jacinto and Violeta. I felt sorry for her. She has enough problems of her own, now she also has to put up with the emotional breakdown of the guy who's been such a jerk to her?

Belen is awfully bold in her scheming for someone who lives and works at Murder Central.

Jardinera: Thanks for the recap.

Julia: Loved this "Belen is awfully bold in her scheming for someone who lives and works at Murder Central. "--so so true.

I just watched the episode.

Someone has been watching ''Little Annie'' (it's a hard day's job)

The reason why Teresa went to the cantina was to see if Felipe was there or if they know about him, and she ended up paying for his expensive ''pulque curado de pistache'' drinks. Then she went to the police station for the same and she ended up being fingerprinted. Ayala said that if they all knew Felipe the way they did, he should be back in a couple days. Nothing to be worried about.

God! My memory is playing tricks on me. I am sorry, I meant ''Annie'' and the hard knock life number...
