El Hotel de los Secretos #44, 3/29/16: Hidden Charms

·        Belen bumps into Diego on the way to the police station and gets waylaid.  He forces her to watch the Double’s informal burial on the side of the road.  Belen blubbers as Garrido digs.  Diego shoots Garrido dead and blames Belen as the devil what made him do it.  He then tells her to start running and essentially not to stop till she’s far, far away.

·        Andres, pigheadedly insists Belen will magically appear again.  He persuades Natalia to fetch the town padre.  He has the priest, Mama Angela, Julio and Natalia there for the supposed wedding.  Our stubborn stand-up guy gets stood up.  Belen doesn’t return and nobody knows where she’s gone, tho’ Angie does suspect at least one reason why she split.  (Good riddance to ungrateful, money-grubbing garbage!  Viewerville has the feeling, though, that like flies to feces, she won't be able to resist the temptation to return for Andres and to get hitched and thus lay claim to his inheritance once again.)

·      The next morning, Diego returns to his little loveless nest and guilts Isabel into having breakfast with him as the married couple they are.  He’s got another kind of fast in mind to break than does she.  Isa outsmarts him uhhhhh-gain, tells him to take a bath (for one), and she’ll meet him down in the dining room.

·        He rips his clothes off in anger once she’s left the suite, and he notices the blood stains on his shirt cuffs.  Oooops!  He immediately burns the shirt in the bathroom trash bucket.  (Nope, most things were made of metal, not plastic, in the not-so-good-ol’ days, remember.)

·        Detective Ayala sets out to explain the new Hookers’ Hygiene Proclamation to the pueblo prostitutes.

·        Angie hears crying in Belen’s room when she starts searching for the missing maid.  It turns out to be Sofia who’s been looking for Belen (to apologize about the dead baby?).  She tries explaining to Angela that she never wanted things to be the way they’ve unfortunately turned out.  It was Mama, always Mama who pushed her.  Sofia makes perfect sense to us--and to Angie, possibly as well, considering she knows Teresa like the back of her hand after all these years.

·        Alfredo returns and gives Mama Elise the hard, cold, cruel facts of their current finances—what’s left of ‘em.  Elise has a mental breakdown in front of Victoria—and not without cursing her dead husband’s memory along with her even long-deader MIL.  Yeppers, ol’ Elise played the eat-shit-or-die-disinherited game with Fredito’s father and family for years in order to inherit the fantastical family fortune, of which, there now remains so very little. (Can we say "farce", class?  Why I think we can!)  Both Teresa and Elise, it seems, have been chasing their tails for years on this one--and it couldn't have happened to a nicer couple of crones than these.

·        Later that morning, Jacinto is washing the car Diego and Garrido used.  He notices the muck all over the tires and sees a piece of cloth with a golden cufflink attached.  (Viewerville assumes it’s part of the newly buried Garrido’s garments but could just as easily be part of the Diego collection of cuffs with missing links, since the one matches another (that Julio had found early on?).   He hands it over to Diego who rewards Jacinto with Garrido’s newly vacated post.

·        At breakfast, Cecilia notes the emotional, ah…., distance between Isela and Diego is about the size of the Straits of Gibraltar.  She later offers Teresa a deal: she’ll take care of Diego’s “needs” for Isela, thus allowing Teresa to keep up appearances, and in return, she’ll allow Ceci her “friendship,” and the powerful socio-political advantages that connection provides her.  For now, that deal seems to suit Dona Teresa.

·        In the meantime, Julio and Isa agree to meet in her daddy’s old suite of rooms to look around for whatever clues there might be to what was in the letter that she’s interested in finding, and whose secrets everybody is so literally dead set on keeping hidden.  While rummaging through the old desk and dresser drawers, Ise finds an old watch chain with a charm attached.  Julio notices that it has writing on it:  “A.N.G.E.L.A.”  Ruh-roh!!!!  Looks like Andres’s mama’s got some ‘splainin’ to do…….

I missed the first half-hour! I'm dying to know what happened to Belen! And what happened between Alfredo and his mother... and what happened to Garrido... so I will be reloading this page every 30 seconds. No hurry ;-) and thank you in advance!

Hi ya, Julie!
No great detail, but the basics are there. Not a lot of substance this go 'round. ; ? ]

Jardinera, thank you for the wonderful recap!

Best scene: Garrido getting shot. Good surprise. Just reward for knowing waaaay too much evidently.
2nd best scene: Diego noticing the blood on his shirt cuff.
Promises to be another good one tonight.

this is great Jardinera, thanks

This show just keeps gettin better the more the actors settle into character and interact together. Small things like Diego replacing his cufflink into the box and Natalia making a small comment that she used her day off to be there in Andres room all day as she prepared to leave.

So Julio and Isabel weren't continuing to investigate Cristina's murder but who attacked Andres?

Teresa doesn't need Cecilia's help, Isabel wasn't going anywhere. Cecilia wants to put herself squarely in the middle.

I think Isabel is seeing Cecilia as a rival for Julio's attention and affection. I am not sure if Julio reciprocates Isabel's interest, but he has already written off Cecilia.

Sure Isabel does but why should it matter? She married and is sleeping with Diego. I think it foolish for Julio to lie so badly when Isabel inquires. Just tell her the truth it cannot get any worse unless Julio naively believes Isabel is untouched.

Thanks Jardinera!

Well, Garrido got removed from the active actor list. Wow, did not expect that! And either did he by the look on his face. So does Diego have a soft spot for Belen or is he one of those who has no qualms beating a woman but won't actually kill one. Found letting her go an interesting option. We shall see her again I'm sure. And Diego burning the shirt, and cuffs...boy does like to play with fire. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Can Andres please now have his eyes open and stop mooning over Belen. Poor Natalia...

What fun watching Elise finding out she's busted. Best. Thing. Ever. I actually wanted to feel bad for her little cohort in treachery since her livelihood depends on that woman too, but it was a tad difficult. I'll work on it.

Now, the next fun part will be watching Teresa when she realizes all this manipulation was for nothing and Alfredo is worthless...to her in every way. He was only tolerable for the money he was going to bring in. All her plans and allegiances are falling apart....what fun. And Sophia is a mess, on the verge of telling everything, and all for nothing? How does she stay quiet now--she lost her end game too.

Please, dear lord, I don't want to see Cece or either of her girls, getting it on with Diego. I am finding that I truly dislike the character, the way she talks, and wish she was out of the picture. Can't quite figure our her end game(what--she wants to set up her business there cause I don't think Genaro would be too happy--different class, but still competition), but I already want her gone.

I think Angela will have to be the one to tell Andres the truth now.

THANK YOU Jardinera. Diego really let Belen go? What was he thinking?? I look forward to her inevitable return, and all the woe it will bring to Diego and Teresa; but am quite stunned that he didn't take the opportunity to get rid of her once and for all. I mean, that grave was big enough for her, Garrido, the baby, and a couple of Gold Knife victims to share.

Diego is going to regret that. Belen, for all her many many faults, was the one most likely to NOT keep secrets. She was on her way to the police, after all. Sure, she was marrying Andres for his money, but I think she was coming around to be almost decent, and I forgive her given everything she's been through. My wrath is now aimed squarely at Jacinto. We don't know Belen's background, but Jacinto has a father who cares for and supports him, and the kid repays by being a little piece of estiercol. He deserves Diego and Lupe deserves a better son. Poor Lupe.

And poor Elise (literally). Wait until Teresa finds out! She will out-smug any smugger that has ever smugged. Elise is done for. Now would be a good time to put that country club plan into effect if they can figure out how to do it without Diego's cash.

At least Isabel came out of the episode ok. No more sex with Diego! Yippee!

Oh, Kelly, that's right. You reminded me of that little S*** Jacinto. He sees for himself what Diego is like, and he STILL wants to work directly for that idiot. Again with the "ambition", no matter what it entails to have to do. I don't think he's that dumb, his look of delight almost gave him that same devilish "vulture" look that Diego does.

I think he's that ashamed of his father and who he is and thinks aligning with Diego somehow will make him better. I doubt Violetta will see it that way, but my guess is that is exactly what he does. Shows up in a suit to strut his stuff and say he has a new job as Diego's "assistant". I think the correct term is goon. Poor Lupe. And NO WAY should he wind up with Violetta. Nope nope nope.

Granted the picture changes from day to day, but here's what it looks like to me now:

Violeta ends up with Gabriel
Natalia ends up with Andres
Jacinto ends up with a brief but effective prison sentence
Belen ends up either in the ground or working for Cecilia.

And Felipe ends up with George Sand aka Jorge Arenas, lol.

I beginning to wonder if Diego really tried to kill Cristina or just scare her the first night? Belen has got more on him and Teresa than Cristina did and Diego allowed her to run unless he killed her and we didn't see. You know, let her go and chase her down for sport.

I sure wished we knew more about Cristina's time at the hotel prior to receiving the letter (and her relationship with Diego). Was she as defiant as Belen and if so over what?

Julie-do you think that Julio and Isabel will get back together?

Tofie - from what little we saw of Cristina she was every bit as defiant as Belen, though maybe in a different way. Whether her talk about wanting to stick it to the man was serious, or just a self-serving justification for bad behavior, she was blackmailing Teresa with that letter, and Teresa was scared. Granted Cristina wasn't using Andres the way Belen is, but it looks to me as though she was still playing the same game. She was just pinning her hopes on Diego to team up and blackmail Teresa, rather than going for the whole enchilada with Andres like Belen did.

I would like to know what kind of relationship they had. Despite their apparent similarities, it doesn't seem as though they were close - not close enough for Cristina to tell her about the letter or the blackmail. And Belen seemed resentful of Cristina's promotion. But they did share a room and managed not to kill one another. Did they bicker constantly? Maintain a frosty silence? Pretend to be bestest friends?

Gobluefan - neither Isabel nor Julio has shown interest in anyone else, nor are there any other characters that they are likely to get involved with. So unless this ends up being the first TN I've ever heard of where the main characters go their separate ways, yeah I'd pretty much bet on them getting back together. Maybe even a several times before this thing is over.

It's slightly possible that some even bigger stars will join the cast and seduce Julio and Isabel, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Maybe Diego is just feeling extra-cocky and didn't think he had to worry about Belen. He thinks he's on the top of the world right now. He underestimates Belen's determination and Isabel's disgust of him.

Heck no should Violeta end up with Jacinto! Natalia needs to get over her issues and help the girl out. Think of the alternative, Natalia.

Kelly

Thank you Jardinera.

The reason Diego killed Garrido is because Belen mentioned that Diego and she had twin children in front of Garrido, and he didn't want anyone else to know about that, so he shot him.

I thought Diego was going to kill Belen too, so I was surprised that he let her go. Andres will not understand why Belen left, unless Angela feels sorry for him and actually tells him what happened to the babies, but I doubt she will. Julio may figure it out and tell him thought, which I hope he does. Finally the first clue for Isabel and Julio about Angela and Romulo is right there, but I think it's going to take a lot longer for them to figure it all out.
So who was the stranger asking another stranger about where the hotel is? Maybe he knows the doc.

I find it fascinating that characters like Angela, Violeta, Andres and Natalia accept their lot in life and I'm sympathetic and believe them good but Cristina, Belen and Jacinto, with the deck stacked against them, want a better life and willing to fight are flawed. Their desperation prompts them to make a deal with the devil when the alternative is to be ground underfoot and live with it.

Gracias, Jardinera.

Considering the size of that grave I am shocked that Diego didn't kill Belen. Hunt her for sport later? That does sound like him. He is a sadist and a sociopath. He better have a spectacular Karmageddon.

Killing Garrido isn't such a surprise when one considers he is a screw-up and would have revealed secrets Diego wanted kept.

Cecelia is a loose cannon. She will start some major trouble and expect Julio to get her out of it.

Finally, could there be anything better to happen to Elise than to discover she isn't rich anymore? No.

At breakfast, Cecilia notes the emotional, ah…., distance between Isela and Diego is about the size of the Straits of Gibraltar.

Love the way you state things, Jardinera. Busy day and so often it seems I miss your recaps. Tend to be a first thing in the morning person and then never get to the computer again.

Lots of surprises last night. Alfredo's mother's lament about having to put up with her horrid husband (with his hairy back) and her even more horrid mother-in-law....for NADA! was both funny and poignant. Clearly, there was nothing at all she enjoyed about her marriage but the hopes of a tidy fortune after his death. Sorry Charlie.

I rather like Cecilia. She certainly adds a lush element to the hotel. And the actress played such a whiner in the last show I watched with her, I'm delighted to see her now playing an out and out minx.

The show continues to be fascinating. i literally jumped when Diego suddenly shot Garrido.

Thanks Jardinera. Always great.

Just thinking how good you all are at bloging about this nv.Which i believe is more interesting than favorite oldie that kept me glued to the screen everyday at 7pm.La Gaviota! But this one has too many misterys going on at once .Surely there is something secret more damaging than the hijo primogenito Andres. It may be that Romolo and Teresa were never married or have a prenup that carries conditons, for the first born baron.Bitter revelations are sure to come when the other part of the lost testement is found by ?? Guessing its the gold knife killer who is searching for revenge against don Romolo for a outwitted fortune somewhere out there..Dona Teresa enjoys being the head of The Hotel too much.

I'm fashionably late as usual. Thank you Jardinera and Julie for your vivid retellings of yesterday's and Monday's episodes. I always seem to be in a mad rush to catch up and I don't always get a chance to comment but I do appreciate reading the excellent recaps and interesting comments. Many thanks to all.

This show is so engaging and unpredictable, I too gasped when Diego turned to Garrido and fired his gun! I was also yelling at Jacinto: "Don't do it! Don't do it! Don't give Diego the blood-stained sleeve! Aaaargh, you dummy!"
