A closer look
We get a repeat of the restaurant scene where Pedro asks Ricardo for the reason of his two-decade-long disappearing act. Before he can answer, we’re teleported to the constructora. Outside, the Three Stooges attempt to dodge security to help Nacho talk to his wife, Begoña; and inside, Ernesto instructs Arleth to find out who the owner of Instituto Palacios is. He also asks her to contact Murillo from business intelligence for more in-depth information on Ricardo.

Kristel is also at the constructora, in her dad’s office, and she is shocked that her mother can be this awful to her. Mario thinks his witchy wife means well; she loves her daughters and wants what’s best for them, even if she has an odd way of showing it. Mario would like Kristel to humor her mom (dale por su lado). Kristel can’t fathom why her father puts up with her mother’s tyrannical and screechy ways. Mario can’t live without his wife and his daughters, that’s why. He endeavors to keep calm because if they all fly off the handle like Silvana does, things would get a lot worse. Life would be hell for their family. “It’s already hell, Papá!”, cries out Kristel. Mario consoles her. His daughter is the light of his eyes and he can’t bear to see her this unhappy. That’s exactly why Kristel has decided that she and her mother can’t live under the same roof. Ever since Kristel returned to the house, Silvana treats her as if it were her fault that... “No, no, no, hija!”, interrupts Mario, “You are not to blame for anything!” Mario tries to convince her not to leave the house but Kristel’s mind is made up: if he is unable to stand up for her and for her sister then she is moving out!
Luca and Adrián return from therapy. Adrián hugs Esperanza, his teacher/lodger/case-worker, to thank her for standing up to his dad.
Mario urges Kristel to think things over. The situation is making her ill, that’s why she thinks she must put some space between her and her mom. According to Mario, Silvana wasn’t always like this. She was a different woman, a lovely person, really (until the crazy hit). Mario prefers to remember the old Silvana. “But she is no longer like that!", says Kristel, “She treats you like dirt! (te trata con la punta del pie)”. Mario is too kitty-whipped to see reason: “But I love her and I know she wants what’s best for you”. Kristel will find a job or go back to live with her grandma. “Are you sure this is what you want?”, asks Mario. “No, but if I don't do it, I will end up scratching her eyes out!”, replies Kristel. Mario promises to support his daughter no matter what. Kristel tells her dad she wishes to see him with someone who truly loves him.
Adrián is helping Esperanza in the kitchen. He wants to know what happiness is. Apparently, he isn’t all talked out from his session with the therapist. Esperanza describes happiness as that moment when you feel that nothing is missing in your life, as if the world had stopped and nothing could be more perfect. Its temporary nature is what makes us pursue happiness little by little, day by day. It’s like pursuing a dream. It’s as if you were in love with life. That’s why you must live a dream of love, a Sueño de Amor. Go home, Adrián.
At the constructora, Viviana is pestering Ernesto over their runaway son. “Ernie, what’s happening with my bebé, Adriáncito? All this aggravation is messing up my face. I will soon need another operation”, whines Viviana as she checks her perfectly lovely, allegedly plastic face in a compact mirror. “I don’t know how you can bear to hear yourself talk!”, says Ernesto with barely-contained irritation. What Viviana can’t bear is the thought of her little cub (cachorrito) living at the house of her husband’s ex. Does Ernesto even realize what kind of neighborhood Esperanza lives in? Eufrosina, their maid, had to use half a box of detergent to wash away the smell of homeless wino (teporocho) from Adrián’s clothes. Half a box of detergent! Ernesto shakes his head and figures it's best to just ignore his delusional wife. Arleth comes in with the information he required: The owner of Instituto Palacios is a certain Bárbara Santillán.
Pedro and Ricardo leave the restaurant looking all chummy. The truth about Ricardo's disappearance was confessed off camera. Drat you! Pedro wants him to tell his Mom as well.
Rodrigo has another nightmare about La Sombra. Tracy consoles him.
“I have an appointment, woman!”, barks Ernesto. “As always, you’re gonna leave me alone, like a stray dog (perrito callejero)”, mewls Viviana. He heads out anyway: “Do something useful (de provecho). Something. Anything!”. She sniffs around his desk.
Adrián is eating a bowl of soup and savoring another piece of Esperanza’s pep talk. Pedro comes in and tells his mom that he met her old flame. Ricardo loves her like crazy! Esperanza ignores Pedro’s gushing and tries to shut him up with soup (caldito).
Ernesto meets Bárbara Santillán, owner of Instituto Palacios. He demands that she reinstate (reponer) his daughter’s scholarship in exchange for his generous donation (donativo). “It goes without saying (sobra decir) that this conversation never happened”, adds Ernesto. He also threatens to close down (clausurar) the school if his offer isn’t accepted.
In the plaza, Luca buys his teenage ladylove that Crayola flavor of ice-cream called Sueño de Amor. He looks too serious for Pato’s taste so she dares him to catch her (A que no me alcanzas). She starts giggling and running with an ice-cream cone in hand until she hits a guy who turns out to be one of her classmates. Luca looks jealous of their friendly exchange.
The Three Stooges are still attempting to access the constructora. They try their luck again, this time disguised as electricians. The receptionist, who denied them entrance a little while before, doesn’t recognize them now because a fake mustache transforms people’s features, or so it seems. They get electrocuted. This kind of humor would delight a toddler.

Pato can read through his sourpuss face: “More like celotes!”, (the word for jealousy in Spanish “celos” + the “ote” emphasizing suffix). Pato ensures Luca that he has no motives to feel jealous; he’s the only man she loves. He apologizes and with much apprehension tells her that he has an announcement to make. He hands her a letter. She reads it and it wipes that semi-permanent goofy smile right off her face. “Congratulations! When are you leaving for Járvar?” Luca is going to Harvard! Tee hee hee. They’re aboard the separation train, destination Splitsville. Oh happy days!
The lady from the disciplinary committee informs Silvana that Bárbara Santillán reinstated Pato’s scholarship and warned that, at the first sign of trouble, Silvana will be fired. Making scenes with Esperanza inside the school building (plantel) will no longer be tolerated. Principal Crazy-Eyes is fuming.
Viviana visits Esperanza. She pleads with Adrián to come back home and treats his hosts with disdain.
Ricardo is hanging pictures in his apartment and getting an earful from Tracy who blames him for Rodrigo’s nightmares. They argue about the divorce and her using the kids to blackmail him. Tracy agrees to sign the divorce papers but she wants custody of the children in return. Ricardo’s chiseled face is in shock.
At the constructora, Ernesto is on the phone to someone, agreeing to pay them when the job is done. He looks pretty chuffed with himself when he hangs up. He sits at his desk and stalks his daughter on Socialbook.
Pato is making a scene in the middle of the plaza: “You sent the application (solicitud) months ago! You could have told me! You just asked me to be your novia!” Before he could get a word in edgewise, she continues: “I’m happy for you, but what about us? You’re putting me between a rock and a hard place (entre la espada y la pared). If I tell you that it’s OK for you to go, the pain will kill me! (You’ve been dating for less than a week. You’ll survive.) And if I tell you not to go, it’ll be awful of me because I’ll be limiting you, retaining you or whatever you want to call it. Luca, the only one who can make a decision is you!” She takes off and he just stands there like a fool on the verge of tears. Who needs this cheap highschool drama? Go to Járvar, son.
“En la guerra y en el amor todo se vale”. All is fair in love and war. Tracy’s Spanish is getting better. Nothing like spite and cultural immersion to improve one’s language skills. Ricardo can’t believe how cynical she is. She is only using their kids to harm him. She doesn’t even care about them. She is so selfish, always have been. (Why did you marry her then, Mr. Faultless?) Tracy reminds him that mothers have a better shot at winning custody battles. Ha!
In her quest for financial independence, Kristel looks for a job at the only nightclub in Mexico City, which also happens to be the only source of part-time work in the capital.
Principal Crazy-Eyes goes to Esperanza’s house to confront her (encarar) about the reinstatement of Pato’s scholarship. Silvana thinks it’s obvious that some influential man is protecting and empowering Esperanza.
Ricardo is jogging in the local park. He’s attacked by two incompetent thugs that he easily defeats. Before he can find out who sent them, a third thug brandishes a gun in his face and tells him to back off if he doesn’t want his kids to be orphaned. The hired goons escape when they hear a police siren. The cops order Ricardo to freeze. He tosses his badge to one of them. The officer apologizes and asks him whether he knows his attackers. Ric doesn’t know but he is sure his attackers were sent by La Sombra. No further explanation is needed. Evidently, all of Mexico’s law enforcement know about La Sombra.
Ernesto was the one who hired the thugs. He berates them on the phone: “How can a schoolteacher beat you up? You were 3 against one!”. According to the defeated hoodlums, this was no ordinary schoolteacher; he is trained in self-defense. Ernesto wonders what secrets Ricardo has been hiding.
Principal Crazy-Eyes is still outside Esperanza’s door, insulting, threatening and foaming at the mouth. Somebody call the cops! Or better yet, call the mental hospital! This psycho belongs in the loony bin. With great effort, Esperanza finally manages to get rid of her.
Kristel is feeding the manager of the antro a load of baloney about her skills and connections. She claims that the place will be crammed (atiborrar) thanks to her PR talents. He agrees to put her on probation for a week. She’ll be paid a commission depending on the number of people she brings in.
Nacho gives a come-back-to-me speech to Begoña. The security guys who’ve come to throw him out are moved to tears but Begoña doesn’t flinch. Luca asks what’s going on just as Nacho is being escorted out of the premises. He also informs Begoña that Pato knows about Harvard and that it’s very likely that the two of them break up. Halelujah!
Pato arrives home. Her mom breaks the news about her scholarship. Surely, Ernesto had something to do with it.
At the Alegrías’, Selena is worried about Ricardo’s minor hand injury. Rodrigo wonders whether his dad saw La Sombra. “No, but I ran into (me topé con) the people who work for him”. Way to go, Ricardo! The kids are now terrified that La Sombra found them and might hurt their father. Ricardo reassures his kids and tells them how much he loves them.
Viviana spent almost the entire episode in Esperanza’s house, coaxing Adrián to go back to his mansion and his silk sheets. He stays firm so she tries to pay Esperanza for her room-and-board services. Mercifully, that was Viviana’s last affront of the day. She kiss-attacks her baby and takes off. Esperanza tells Adrián that he must resolve his differences with his father. Seriously, go home, Adrián.
At Pato’s suggestion, the Guerreros go out for coffee and a chinwag. The kids plead Ricardo’s case: he’s getting divorced and his marriage was over way before Esperanza was in the picture. She shouldn't feel guilty for breaking a home since it was already broken. What if Ricardo’s divorce takes years? Will she put her happiness on hold for that long? The teenagers' dodgy love advice is interrupted by Pedro's cellphone ringing. It's Luca. He wants to meet him.
Kristel puts on her antro work uniform. She thinks it’s a little too tight and revealing but I don’t see much difference from what she usually wears. At least this skirt won’t lift up every time she sneezes or someone nearby breathes.
Ernesto is yelling at Arleth for Lord knows what: “You don’t understand, do you? Don’t you realize that I’m still in love with Esperanza as if it were the first day?” He turns around and sees that Viviana had just walked in. She heard it all and she looks really hurt.

Viviana thinks her face (cara) is "chueca" (crooked) and there was a bad joke about her putting herself in Adrian's shoes which she wouldn't do because they are so ugly. ??? They are making her so stupid and vapid she is not funny.

Hi Nandicta, happy spring. But its cold here in north Florida, but still spring. Now thanks for the recap. Some of these people are so shallow. And why would ric scare his kids like that? The man ain't to bright. Makes you wonder whose stupider him or the wife/mother. Those poor kids.
If viv spent as much time loving her child adrian instead of loving her over plastic surgeried face that poor kid wouldn't have to find solace in a liquor bottle. But this Is something that would have had to started at birth and it clearly did not so. ....well he had his big bro, but hes off to harvard U.S.A. O kid you're on your own. We used to say that when we saw someone jealous: ¿A cuanto los elotes? How much for the corn?
If your daughter has only one father (that you know of), why would you say: Your father, Ernesto de la Colina, paid for your scholarship! Isn't enough saying it without mentioning his name and last name?

Yeah, you-re right,it must be relally sad that you learn, after 20 years of mariage that you only were a ''consolation prize'' after his real love turned him down.

Pablo, I always have found it fascinating how everyone has to end "paired up" somehow someway in the novelas. Being single is usually not an option. All I can say is ????? Oh well, it will be interesting if Mario takes on Silvana at some point down the road or if he will prefer to remain a doormat.

I am really enjoying this show in spite of the unnecessary cheesiness they insist on cramming in (e.g. saying the name of the show whenever possible, as though anyone would actually say it in conversation or give that name to their Crayola ice cream, stupid special effects like the electric shocks). Most of the enjoyment comes from the fun recaps and discussion here. Another excellent writeup.
Didn't Ernesto have an affair with Espe AFTER he was already married to Viv, and after she had the affair that brought us Saint Luca? I'm no Ernesto fan, but I don't think he married Viv as a second choice when he was already in lurve with someone else. Their marriage seems to have been a disaster from the beginning just as a result of both of their personalities, without anyone else's involvement.
The exterior of The Only Antro looks like the same place where Fedra performed in Llena de Amor.

I like their chemistry and the way they play off each other but Viviana doesn't have to be such a caricature.

This happens also in movies and TV series... and in life. Choosing to lead a fulfilled life as a single man or woman instead of "settling" is rarely portrayed as precisely this, a conscious choice. Usually, single people are shown to be miserable and in a desperate quest for the emotional validation of some kind of romantic pairing.
-- Nina: I think I spoke too prematurely of spring because we've had a rainstorm for 36 hours straight! I completely agree that the parents in this show are absolute failures and the two decent responsible ones, i.e. Esperanza and Ricardo, have made some notable boo-boos. For example, Esperanza allowing her underage daughter to date her much older step-brother or her letting her diabetic son work nights, getting only 3 hours of sleep before having to go to school. Ricardo is putting his children in danger either by disclosing too much information about his work or by failing to protect their identities and whereabouts from the violent criminal who stalks them.
-- Pablo: You made some interesting observations. Tracy and Rod speaking Spanish seemed odd but it wasn't as bizarre as seeing her think out loud in Spanish during Friday's episode! I think she said "¿Qué hago?" and started tearing cardboard in a fit of rage! I just burst out laughing!
You're right about Esperanza telling Pato that "your father, Ernesto de la Colina" had something to do with the reinstatement of her scholarship. Saying characters' full names when it is absolutely unnecessary is a TN staple that I barely notice anymore. I think they are doing it for the viewers who have just joined or for people who have trouble keeping the names straight.

I agree with your timeline regarding the Viviana-Ernesto marriage. It did indeed begin as a business merger rather than the result of a love affair. However, I don't think Adrián is the primary reason he stayed in the marriage because Adrián is 3 years younger than Pato.
