Sueño de Amor (SdA) #5. Monday March 14, 2016. Ricardo Is Moving to Mexico And The Guerreros Have New Battles to Wage.

A closer look
Ricardo is on the phone to Esperanza, talking about how much he loves her and how seeing her revived his old feelings, yada yada yada. He hopes they can pick up right where they left off. He is certain that Esperanza feels the same about him; he can’t be imagining things. Esperanza can’t contain her tears but she stays firm: She tells Ricardo that she is no longer in love with him and asks him to stop contacting her. She hangs up without raising the question that puzzled viewers for days: "Where in poo-perfect hell were you for the last 20 years?". For two decades, Ricardo didn’t use any of the means of communications known to Man to contact Esperanza. What’s up with that? Not a single letter, phone call, telegram, carrier pigeon, smoke signal or three-eyed raven! Nada! Then Mr. Hot Stuff shows up at Esperanza’s door, tells her he’s married, drops the “I love you” bomb and expects her to fall into his arms. Sorry, Ric, but “Operation Get A Load Of Me” is a resounding failure. Oh, and you’re a creep!
Speaking of creeps, Luca is enjoying an office picnic with his underaged girlfriend of 3 days. There’s a bottle of wine there too in case he needs to ply her with alcohol. They talk about Luca's mother, Viviana, and Pato promises to do her best to get along with her. They flirt the way starry-eyed lovesick 13-year-old girls imagine that grown-ups flirt. Luca uses a cheesy line about Pato's lips being the perfect appetizer. They smooch.
Esperanza notices a tupperware of chopped courgettes (calabacitas) on the kitchen table, next to one of Pedro’s textbooks. She also notices that the fridge is chock-full of vegetables. She asks Pedro why he’s suddenly interested in eating courgettes when he never liked them before. And why has he bought such an excessive amount of veggies? He replies that he’s following a new diet he read about online, because he wants to bulk up. Esperanza doesn’t want Pedro to self-prescribe (auto-recetar) dietary guidelines inspired from internet articles. If he really insists on going on a diet (ponerse a dieta), she’ll take him to see a nutritionist (nutrióloga).
Ricardo is on the phone, reporting to his boss. Instituto Palacios is their only link to La Sombra. Ricardo is a trained teacher and can infiltrate the school to discover the identity of the kid who will lead them to La Sombra.
Pato tells Luca that her MaPa is a warrior who sacrificed so much for the sake of her children. Luca, acting as Osorio’s spokesperson, declares that single mothers are honorable people. Wow, this is brand new information! And you sound like a condescending boob! Pato wants Luca to hurry up and serve dessert (postre) because she needs to study for her math test. She must get a high grade to maintain her scholarship (beca). Luca offers to help her in her exam revision. She is really impressed because, not only is Luca a superhero (SuperCreep?), but he is also good with numbers. He is, indeed, and to prove it he teaches her that one set of lips plus another set of lips equal two (Gag me with a spoon!) and he moves in for a kiss. Ernesto walks in on these two halfwits exchanging spit. Hopefully the IQ level of the conversation will jump up dozens of points in his presence.
Principal Crazy-Eyes is at home plotting something against Esperanza. As she ends her phone conversation, in walks her long-suffering hubby, Mario, accompanied by her shallow youngest daughter, Salma. Silvana scolds Salma for always being connected (enchufada) to her smartphone. Salma is apparently stalking Adrián on Socialbook. Kristel joins them and her father asks her what her relationship to Erasmo the builder (albañil) is.
Adrián shows up at Estrella Gallo’s house. She is not happy to see him and wonders how he found out where she lived. “I followed you. Tee hee.” Aaaand we have another creep, ladies and gentlemen! He wants to talk to her about her fight with Salma. Estrella does not wish to be associated with Adrián; he brings her nothing but problems and, because of him, now everyone thinks she is a quarreler (peleonera). Adrián tells her that she is the only girl he likes. He leans in for a kiss but gets interrupted by a guy who brought an eviction notice (orden de desalojo) in Erasmo’s name.
In the Kuri household, Silvana is freaking out because Kristel got involved with a builder. Mario says that Erasmo is a hard-working man whose profession does not make him less honorable. Silvana scoffs at her husband’s “communist ideas” and Salma calls her father a radical leftist (chairo). Mario contradicts the statement he made 5 seconds earlier and urges Kristel to think about the kind of future that awaits her with “a boy like that”. Silvana and Kristel get into a screaming match. Kristel says that she is not dating Erasmo, she only met him twice, but she likes him.
The Gallo children are worried but Erasmo swears on the memory of their dead parents that he will protect them and maintain a roof above their heads. He tells his brother and sister that all 3 of them are united like bricks (ladrillos) and nobody can knock them down (tumbar). Huh? This is a terrible analogy! How is this supposed to reassure them?
Ernesto is with the syrupy pair. Apparently, the gourmet picnic lunch was Pato’s surprise to Luca (who sells alcohol to a minor wearing a school uniform?). She brags that life with her is full of surprises. Ernesto wants to drink to the privilege of having a daughter like Pato but Pato wants to toast (brindar) the mothers who dedicate their lives to their children. Does your mom know where you are right now, niña? Does she know that you’re drinking during the day at a strange man’s office instead of studying for your exam?
Ricardo, the doting father, has made his little ones lunch. Selena thinks the broth (consomé) is very sabrosito. She learnt this variation of the Spanish word “tasty” in a Mexican telenovela. If only she had read Caray Caray novela recaps and discovered how much viewers hate phony gringo accents. Ricardo serves the children hamburgers (hamburguesas) and promises to join in their games after they do their homework (tarea). He then remembers that the woman he abandoned 20 years ago no longer loves him and this makes him feel blue.
Esperanza and Pedro announce to a small group of overzealous clappers that they received the building permits (permisos de construcción) and that they applied to the bank for a loan (crédito) to build their dream school. More aplausos and a group hug.
Selena is writing about her father’s job for a school assignment and wants to know what he does for a living. “Secret agent”, he replies. I can’t stop laughing! What kind of a secret agent reveals that he is a secret agent? Ricardo receives a new “menssage” on his cellphone informing him that the operation is authorized and to await further instructions (Note n° 342,789 to Osorio: If you’re going to do a close-up shot of something written, please use spellcheck!). All of a sudden, ominous music starts playing and a door knob is wiggled frantically. “Not again”, cries Rodrigo. The terrified Alegría kids run upstairs in a chorus of screams. It turns out it was just Tracy and her fuchsia suitcases. She spent an uncomfortable night thinking about their family situation and decided to cancel her trip to Africa.
Ernesto wants his secretary, Arleth, to gather information on Ricardo Alegría Sandoval. He dismisses her but not before playing his dumb “freeze, unfreeze” game. Pato and her picnic basket walk into Ernesto’s office. He greets her as if he hadn’t just spoken to her a wee bit earlier in Luca’s office. Ernesto tells his daughter how delighted he is to get to know her and how much he regrets having missed seeing her grow up. He vows to do whatever he can in order to gain her forgiveness, her affection and her admiration. Ernesto is sweet as pie until someone knocks at his office door. He bellows: “I said I don’t want to be disturbed!”. Pato is startled by this fleeting glimpse of her father’s unpleasant side. It’s Adrián. The half-siblings meet and hug.
Back at the house of the Guerrero family, Esperanza is preparing a yummy cake called "pastel de tres leches", Pedro’s favorite. She tells Pato to concentrate on her studies and slow things down with Luca.
Ricardo and Tracy go another round of the same fight they’ve been having for years. Their marriage is broken, their family is broken and the kids suffer because of their mother’s absence. No children can withstand seeing their mother once every 6 months. Tracy believes that other families have it worse and that her children are old enough to understand why her job requires her to be away. Ricardo presents her with divorce papers and informs her that the process is underway for their legal separation. He also tells her that he ran into Esperanza in Mexico and confirmed that he is still in love with her. Tracy is not thrilled that her husband is looking to win over his ex-girlfriend when he is still a married man. “You listen to me, Reecherd. I am not signing this! I told you a thousand times: You are not going to get rid of me without a fight!”. And we’re sure emotionally unstable Tracy will keep up her promise for the next 120+ episodes. The kids come down and give their mother a hug.
Adrián wants his father to help Estrella’s family who is about to be evicted. Ernesto doesn’t see what he can do and would prefer it if his son concentrated on his studies instead of courting this Estrella girl. They get into an argument and Adrián reproaches his dad for treating him so badly. “It’s as if I weren’t your son”. Luca enters the office just as Ernesto is getting ready to pounce on Adrián. The latter picks up his school bag, thanks his dad for nothing and heads out.

The Guerrero children are supposed to be doing their homework. Instead, they are texting each other about Pedro’s diabetes and the instructions the doctor gave him. Esperanza suspects something is wrong with Pedro. She tries to pump Pato for information but gets nothing.
Ricardo tells Tracy that he is going to Mexico for work and that he had planned to take the kids with him since she was going to be in Africa. Tracy agrees to stay with their children while he is in Mexico.
Luca asks his dad to deal with Adrián differently. Ernesto knows how to raise his teenage son and won’t tolerate meddling from anyone.
Esperanza serves the cake but Pedro pretends that he can’t eat it because it is not permitted in his new diet and because he ate some bad pizza earlier.
Arleth reports to her boss that she couldn’t find anything on Ricardo Alegría Sandoval. It’s as if information on this guy were protected.
Ricardo puts his kids to bed and announces that they will be moving to Mexico very soon.
Adrián steals a bottle of liquor and gets drunk in his room. Luca surprises him and uses a combination of yelling, preaching, hugging and over-sentimentality to drive home the point that alcohol is not the adequate way to deal with problems. Adrián is wounded by his dad’s awful treatment but he can always count on Luca. Oblivious Viviana flits in, complains about needing a more spacious mansion when her boys tell her they need more space (as in privacy), doles out kisses and flits right out again.
The next day, Reecherd says goodbye to his kids and leaves them in the care of their mother, who is already ignoring their presence. He is only going to be away for one day.
At Instituto Palacios, Pedro is trying to be friends with Kristel but he has to tread on eggshells because she gets screechy every time she feels Pedro is not responding adequately, which is every 5 seconds, according to her. Forget about this chick, blond cubby, she is too high maintenance! She confides in him about Erasmo and he confides in her about his diabetes.
Pato can’t sit her exam, according to her teacher. This guy played a crooked lawyer in PEAM then he was a crooked strip joint owner in MCET, so it's very likely he is a crooked teacher in this tale. Apparently, Pato failed some subjects and owes tuition fees because her scholarship has been cancelled.
Esperanza is at her public school job, talking to Adrián about his father and Pato, when she receives the scholarship revocation news. She heads out to confront Silvana.
Silvana is interviewing (entrevistar) Ricardo for the job of second grade teacher. She tells him that she will consult the school board and get back to him as soon as possible (a la brevedad).
On his way out of Instituto Palacios, Ricardo bumps into Esperanza. Literally. “What are you doing here?”, they ask at the same time. Jinx! She works there. He’s looking for work there. “We’ll talk in a bit”, says an exasperated Esperanza. She charges into Silvana’s office, guns blazing: “The problem (bronca) is with me not with my daughter!”. Principal Crazy-Eyes tells Esperanza that she now has no choice but to set aside her honesty and scruples, if she wants to keep her job at Instituto Palacios and afford paying her daughter’s tuition (colegiatura). The measly salary that the musturd school pays her won’t be enough to cover all her expenses, “unless, you have another source (fuente) of income”, adds Silvana, pointing with her eyes at Esperanza’s hips. Silvana alleges that Pato failed two oral exams. Esperanza protests that her daughter is a brilliant student. Silvana emphasizes the fact that these were ORAL exams. There is no written proof to show that Silvana falsified Pato’s grades. Silvana kicks Esperanza out of her office. Ricardo is waiting right outside: “Are you OK?”. “No, I am not OK!”, replies a livid Esperanza.

When we were kids and we happen to say the same thing simultaneously, immediately after that whoever said first ''uno, dos, tres, me debes una coca'' was entitled for a treat from the other, specifically a Coca-cola. Most times nobody got it, but it was fun trying to beat each other...

I agree, Pedro should tell his mother about his diabetes. It's too serious an issue to be concealed. And the way people seem to pick up on his drinking water is really funny, especially since nobody seems to care when Pato drinks wine. The girl is 16-17!

So Ricardo goes about his life for 20 years, building his family with undoubtedly nary a thought of Esperanza. Now that he has decided he is madly in love with her, couldn't he have settled things with Tracy before declaring his undying love? I don't blame her for being upset. They have grave problems but telling the woman you want to divorce that hey, you've always loved someone else doesn't help his cause.

Excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes.
I thought Tracy's English was pretty good. Truthfully I'm only watching this show to see American Tracy in action.
Pedro & Pato are stupid. Everyone in town knows about Pedro's diabetes except Espy.
I am wondering why Ernesto is so nasty to Adrian. It couldn't be because Adrian's not his kid because he is pleasant to Luca, who is not his kid. I personally think Ernesto resents Adrian for having to stay with cheating Viviana. I think he probably found out that Luca wasn't his kid and wanted to leave Vivi (cheating on Vivi with Espy, creating Pato), then when he wanted to marry Espy, Viviana announced she was pregnant (Adrian), so Ernie stayed.
Viviana is a bad mom. Luca smelled the alcohol from a couple of feet away on Adrian but Viviana kisses Adrian on the cheek and couldnt' tell? Oh she could tell, she just doesn't care.

Another thing, if Ricardo's been living in the US for 20 years and has an American, English speaking wife and the children are likely going to US public schools where they are speaking English, how come RICARDO isn't speaking English? We know the actor can speak English. Please don't let this be like Que Bonito Amor where Jorge Salinas' character's family & friends all lived in America but everyone down to the people in the American prison PLUS the American judge were speaking Spanish (lol).

Espe sure has interesting parenting skills. "You want to eat VEGETABLES?!?! NO! I will not permit this reckless behavior! Here, have some cake."
But Pedro needs to tell her about the diabetes already. And he should be getting set up on a treatment plan that will let him eat cake (in small amounts, while monitoring his blood sugar and adjusting his insulin dosages). I mean, she has time to bake cakes. I'm sure she can handle hearing that he has diabetes. It's treatable. Worrying about some mysterious unknown thing going on with him is surely far more stressful.
I don't understand why they didn't make Tracy another immigrant from Mexico. Her English is good, but her accent is not even remotely gringo. And the kids' random switching between fluent Spanish and struggling with basic words is funny. They could at least make it less commonly used words that they are having difficulty with.
The schmaltzy music whenever Saint Luca saves the day is cracking me up.
Principal Crazy Eyes is not very smart. She keeps having these fights with Espe at full volume, so anyone on the block can hear her threats and lack of ethics. Erasmo is way more classy than she is.

Talking about the boy - isn't he supposed to be a smart kid? Diabetes is not a disease that you can hide easily and he lives with his mother! ! And how about he and Kristel becoming so friendly all of a sudden? Yesterday he was showering her with cheap lines, today he is telling her his biggest secret.
I'm worried that Adrian will end up badly. This kid only needs a little bit of love. I could almost buy Ernesto's genuine interest in Pato if he didn't treat the son that he did raise so badly.

I'm getting shades of Arturo Montenegro with this character but his one redeeming quality is that his marriage to Tracy was already a lost cause. He didn't decide overnight to ditch a loving faithful wife after 25 years of marriage and attempt to gaslight her about the reasons for his sudden rejection. Come to think of it, Tricky Ricky is a great galán compared to the trainwreck of boiling hormones and nauseating self-entitlement that the PyP "designated" male prota is.

Now why would riccys wierd wife fight for a marriage she bearly participate in? Does she even love this man? And who is she protecting the species with? Waaaay over there in the bush? I don't think ric cares cuz hes in luuuurve with angry espy.
And why wont her son tell mom about him being to sweet problem? Hes worried about her reaction, he should tell her.

Having had a chance to think about Pedro's predicament, I feel that the grown-up in me feels that hiding his condition from his mother is a dumb move. As you rightly pointed out, if he goes into a diabetic coma, he'll cause his mother a lot more agony.
Nevertheless, when I put myself in Pedro's teenager shoes and I remember how near-sighted, clueless and know-it-all teenage me was, I feel that blond cubby's reaction is not illogical at all.
