A closer look
Outside school, a sweet boy delivers a box to Esperanza. Inside lies a black flower. Her kids find the "gift" macabre.
At Instituto Palacios, Félix arrives late and Ricardo reminds him that he should get a yellow card for his tardiness because the teaching staff (docentes) ought to be at school 15 minutes early. Félix does not find the reversal of roles amusing: so now it turns out that ducks are opening fire on shotguns (ahora resulta que los patos le tiran a las escopetas)? Ricardo thinks his supervisor ought to have a sense of humor. Selena imagines a Pokemon fight between her dad and Félix where the latter is defeated and loses half his musical mustache. I will spare you the rant.

Principal Crazy-Eyes tells Kracy that her husband is under the microscope. He is being observed on CCTV constantly. Kracy thinks that Esperanza won’t risk being seen with him. Silvana reckons that they should force the two lovebirds on each other, so to speak. Trick them so that a scandal would occur (se arma el escándalo) and Kracy would look like the victim.
Selena intercepts Esperanza in the school corridor and asks her be hers and Rodrigo’s Spanish teacher. Esperanza hesitates. Selena argues that Rodrigo needs the Super Maestra’s help to lose his Russian accent because the other kids have been making fun of him. The Alegría children can’t rely on their parents to improve their Spanish language skills because their mom is Quick Draw McKracy and their dad occupies his afternoons with secret errands and special supermarket missions. Esperanza surrenders to Selena’s adorable plea. The little girl hugs her as a thank you and knocks off her hands the package containing the black flower. Ricardo notices Esperanza’s nervousness as she picks the box off the floor and scurries away to her classroom.
The crazies’ conference continues. Apparently, they can hear as well as see Esperanza and Ricardo’s exchange on CCTV. They vow to engineer a master plan to catch the secret sweethearts red-handed. Bwahahahaaaaa!
Ernesto is having brunch with a Señor Parker to whom he gave a lot of money in order to make Ricardo suffer. Whatever, dude! Get a life!
Kracy is in the classroom, mangling English and picking on Pato. She berates her for talking to Aranza, then for answering in Spanish. As punishment, she gives her a stack of papers to translate for tomorrow.
In an awkward transition, it is already lunchtime. Pedro is trying to let Aranza down “gently” by explaining to her that he “needed” to use her in order for him to make Kristel jealous. However, he can’t tell Kristel the truth because she will feel betrayed. Aranza threatens to spill the beans immediately but she thinks better of it because Margarita beats her to Kristel’s table. She is there to gather intelligence on the handsome forty-something man (cuarentón) with the Dalí mustache and the spectacular buttocks (pompas). Kristel can’t believe what she’s hearing: “You’re kidding me (¿Me estás choreando?), right?”. Nope. Biker Meemaw is dead serious; she can even picture herself as the new Mrs. Del Pozo.
Mario brought Jerónimo to Erasmo’s work. Those of you playing “Spot the Virgin” will notice that a small altar for La Virgen de la Paz has been erected in the construction site.

Rodrigo bonds with his new pal, Homero, over some dragon magazine.
At the Musturd School for the Emotionally Stunted, Adrián interrupts Esperanza’s class to ask Estrella to be his novia. If the most beautiful girl in the galaxy says no, he’ll move to outer space (I wish I were making this up but you really can’t make this utter sh*te up!). Say no, hen! Please say no! Mother Earth can use one less knucklehead.
After class, Ricardo comes to see Esperanza. She shows him the black orchid and berates him for putting her life in danger with his lies. He vows to protect her and peppers his promises with a generous pinch of Trust Me’s (¡Confía en mí!). Don’t trust him, Esperanza! He is a beautiful liar. They’re the worst kind.
Erasmo is guilt-tripping himself over Kiko’s accident and hoping that La Virgen de la Paz will grant them the miracle of giving Kiko the ability to walk... and bug us with a gazillion cringeworthy choreographies and bad rap between now and the finale. ¡Por favor, Virgencita de la Paz, ahorrános este disgusto! Please, Virgencita, spare us this unpleasantness!
Adrián is marking his and Estrella’s 16th minutiversary. They’ve been together as novio and novia for a whole 16 minutes and 34 seconds. Someone please gag me with a shovel! Just as they are about to kiss, my favorite person in this novela rolls on over and orders them to occupy their mouths and hands in other endeavors, such as whistling and clapping (¡Chiflando y aplaudiendo!). He also threatens to tattle-tale to Erasmo.
Oh for Forghorn’s sake! Erasmo is still blubbering over Kiko! He flashbacks to the boy’s accident, so we can get bonus images with the story we heard 17 times already!
Ricardo tells Esperanza that he’ll be assigning her a security detail (escolta). Esperanza doesn’t want that. How will she explain that a simple schoolteacher has bodyguards? She blames Ricardo’s return for complicating her life and making her suffer. Send him over to my house, luv. I’m really short on suffering these days.
Margarita is still at Instituto Palacios, chasing the trail of the musical mustache. She argues with Silvana over Kristel and her relationship with the inferior (but oh-so-sexy) albañil. Then, after Silvana leaves, Margarita runs into Félix and plants a big wet one on his lips.
Paulo and Pamela Rey are with Ricardo, in the Principal’s office. They tell him that their mother is in Europe and their dad is too busy to come to school. Paulo says that Mr. Rey is too much of a big shot to waste his time coming to his daughter’s school. He pays Instituto Palacios to raise his kids for him so he doesn't have to. Ricardo doesn't care how important or affluent Mr. Rey is. Someone ought to respond for Pamela’s unacceptable behavior because it’s constantly disrupting his class. After Paulo and Pamela leave, Silvana orders Ricardo to respect the privacy of the school’s most important donors, like Mr. Rey, or else, he can find himself another job!
Ernesto and Kracy are lunching. He doubts that Ricardo is really a schoolteacher and attempts to cajole the truth out of her. It’s a failed endeavor. Kracy may be half-crazy but she is no dumbo. Her husband is indeed a schoolteacher; there are no secrets to dig for there. She does, however, seem to enjoy the compliment Ernesto made about her gorgeous green eyes. The looks they give each other strongly indicate that these two will be mingling limbs in 5 to 10 episodes max.
Kristel flirts with Pedro and tells him that the world would be better with more guys like him. ¡Ay ajá! Mmhmm! Excuse me while I shake my head for the rest of the episode.
After school, Ricardo’s kids intent again to convince Esperanza to give them Spanish classes. Kracy interrupts and makes a ratchet scene in the middle of the street, and in front of the children, accusing Esperanza of wanting to steal her husband and kids from her. It’s Jerry Springer with school uniforms, live from a nameless street in Mexico City.
Viviana briefs Anastasia: Sex always works (to snap up the naive Lucas of the world). Pull the old TN classic trick and get pregnant! From your bee-stung lips to God’s ears, dahling!
Salma is whining that she likes Adrián. Silvana doesn’t approve of the alcoholic teen. Salma retorts that Adrián is preferable to a lowly bricklayer like Erasmo or a dopey wimp (teto) like Mario. Silvana demands that Salma respect her father! The only woman allowed to walk all over that man and humiliate him six ways from Sunday is his wife! Adrián is not boyfriend material and that’s the end of that!
Ricardo is in the awkward position of having to explain to his kids that Esperanza doesn’t want to steal their dad from their mom. He then informs his ex-future-wife (and, hopefully, soon-to-be girlfriend) that Kracy hired the best divorce attorney in California. This guy has a stellar track record in celebrity divorces and he never lost a single case. Ricardo is afraid that his future ex-wife might use his dangerous job as a pretext to gain custody of his kids. He also wonders how Kracy got the money to hire this bigshot attorney.
At the constructora, Ernesto gives Mario an ultimatum: Either he fixes his home situation that's making him slip at work or he can find himself a new job. Basically, Ernesto advises him to get a mistress. Well, he technically said “new love”, but you know... Potayto, potahto.
Margarita is still stalking Félix. She offers him a ride home.
Kracy is heading for a hair appointment. Ricardo has to work. Who will stay home with the kids? Didn’t Kracy say she wants to get closer to her children? “You think you’re Super Daddy! Father of the Year! Well, deal with it!”, she barks. “When did you become this Kracy, Kracy?”, asks a despondent Ricardo. She has no qualms about using their kids to keep him chained to her. Well, can’t blame a girl for trying, can you?
Ernesto receives an email with detailed information on Esperanza’s debts.
Ricardo drops the kids at Esperanza’s. She promises she’ll take good care of them.
Félix has motion sickness and vomits in Margarita’s moped sidecar. She kiss-attacks him again. Here come the pukes!
Ricardo chews out Triana for not providing him with the intelligence he required regarding La Sombra’s camera recordings and Isaac Rey’s whereabouts. Pissy Ricky’s family is in danger and this lack of crucial information is endangering them more. Triana assures him that the agents that protect Esperanza and his kids are the best. She even vows to lay down her life to protect his loved ones. Find yourself a new job, Agent Fonseca. Your boss is an ungrateful boob.
Esperanza is busy in the kitchen and Ricardo is busy ogling her. Her finger gets caught in one of the drawers. Ricky Suave attempts to kiss the boo-boo better but she orders him to stop! All he’ll do is hurt her more. “We were about to get married and you left!?”, she says. “I was gonna die in the desert”, replies Ricardo. Yeah, we heard that part already. Care to elaborate? “Why didn’t you look for me? Why didn't you call?”, asks Esperanza. He tells her that he did call her and Pedro Sr. answered the phone. He wasn’t her husband back then and Ricardo told him “something that would change everything”. Esperanza and the viewers ask in perfect unison: “What did you tell him?”. Freakin’ Selena interrupts, AGAIN: “It’s not good to be telling each other secrets!” Damn you, escuincla entrometida! She shows them a map she’s been coloring. Yay for you, you can color inside the lines! What do you want, a cookie? Oh great! Rodrigo jumps in too! Hasn’t Ricardo taught his spawns not to interrupt adults? Anyhoo... When the kids get back to their homework, instead of resuming the oh-so-very-important conversation, Esperanza and Ricardo talk about the kids and how Rodrigo is now warming up to Esperanza. Bla bloo blee. Who cares? What did you tell, Pedro Sr.? ¡Habla de una maldita vez! Nope, he doesn’t say a thing and she doesn’t ask him either. I want to bang their heads together! He attempts to move into her personal space. She moves away.
Pato and Luca are having dinner. She admires him ever since she saw him on that crane. She is so afraid of losing him. You can’t lose me. I’m all yours. I love you, do you love me? “I love-a you with all-a my heart-a! If I don’t see-a you again-a, I’m-a gonna die!” as Fat Clemenza from “The Godfather 1” said, mocking the still-green Michael (Clemenza Cooking Meatballs in "The Godfather"). Oh Sweet Mother of Mercy! Pato and Luca are both crying now! More pungent cheesiness, more glycerin tears, more stale Te Amo’s. Excuse me while I go look for a large bucket. Maybe Félix has one to spare.
In the De la Colina mansion, Ernesto and Anastasia lock horns. He wants to throw her out of his house and threatens to annihilate her (aniquilar) if she doesn’t stay away from his son. She’d better get away or Luca will find out the truth! What truth? We don’t know. However, this recapper is betting you a chilorta and a Fanta Limón that these two boinked before.
Back at the Guerreros’, Ricardo is asking Esperanza for advice on how to handle his rowdy pupils. Helloooo! What did you tell Pedro Sr.? Oh, I give up! She mocks the great Marine and super secret agent for letting a handful of wee bairns terrorize him. He tells her that he thinks Pamela is a bit quieter after the fire alarm scare. He feels that she lacks a loving figure in her life. Even her older brother doesn't treat her well. Anyway, aside from his (failing) investigation, Ricardo feels that he really needs help to control his (failing) class. He pulls a sad puppy face to move Esperanza and this throws her back to their old days as a couple.
Margarita is at home, swooning over Félix. Again. I’m so over this filler character. Pedro arrives to help Kristel with maths.
Still in the Guerrero house, Rodrigo and Selena are watching TV while their father and, hopefully, soon-to-be stepmommy are chitchatting out of earshot. Esperanza advises Ricardo to show Pamela who the authority figure is. Kinda like with puppy dogs, right, Espe? She also advises the lousy teacher to try to gain Pamela’s affection, make her laugh... Ricardo gazes at Esperanza, his beautiful brown eyes brimming with love: “I should have never married Tracy.” “Well, you must have loved her at some point to marry her”, snaps back our feisty maestra. “I should have married you”, he says. “You left and you broke your promise”, she says. “I love you”, he says. The Alegría kids hear their dad’s love declaration because, you know, they have Wolverine hearing. They turn their heads away from the TV in perfect synchronization and stare hard at Tricky Ricky.

Hey Patio Pals! Excuse the cranky mood that seeps through this recap. OK, I admit I'm not usually very tolerant with the Osorio but I think the dose was a bit extra here. Apologies. It's been a manic week with less than optimal sleep.

Selena has too much imagination. I bet she does! And I hope the kids who were watching this had a good time with the falling down scene crushing Kiko and the shots from the preview. Well done, osorio! BTW, dragons are also here very often, first when she imagined Silvana was of them, then the ones from the video game and then the ones from the comic... Maybe they are Emilio's favorite fantasy character?
My problem with Kracy is that her accent sounds very phony and that, for me is a turnoff. Jim Adler has a better way to speak ''spanish'' in his commercials.
Ok. So spanish is not allowed in english class? Did they have english class before and for some reason hire Kracy as a substitute teacher or this is the first time they offer it?
I heard someone saying that Pedro could end up with Krista and that leaves Erasmo to be paired with... Jerónimo? Imagine that for a twist!
I know about the second hand smoke, but, is there a second hand drunk? Kissing Adrián could inebriate Estrella...
Erasmo shouldn't worry. If Virgen de la Paz doesn't make Kiko walk, we can always go back to our ''Tepeyac's little brownie'' Nuestra morenita del Tepeyac, the backup Guadalupita.

I a sure Ricardo told Kracy ''I love you'' many times, inclusive in front of the kids, but, how do thy know the meaning of the same words in spanish ''te amo''? Maybe Ricardo used to tell the same to Kracy?

Fantastic Nandita! This certainly wasn't the best episode, but you spun silk out of cloth.
"A Measly Crumb Of Relevance In A Chilorta Of Insipid Fillers", "Quick Draw McKracy", "Musturd School for the Emotionally Stunted" and "Salma is whining that she likes Adrián. Silvana doesn’t approve of the alcoholic teen" were great but "More pungent cheesiness, more glycerin tears, more stale Te Amo’s" was my hands down favorite.
Let me first say that while I am fervently hoping for Kiko's recovery I admit that you captured my feelings perfectly with "...and bug us with a gazillion cringeworthy choreographies and bad rap between now and the finale. ¡Por favor, Virgencita de la Paz, ahorrános este disgusto! Please, Virgencita, spare us this unpleasantness!" and there you have it!
Yes Jarifa, you are on target in that Kristel doesn't realize how Pedro feels about her. I think this is to her credit. She seems like an intelligent girl without an ounce of conceit. Others would have thought all boys fell at their feet. I also think Pedro did an excellent job of convincing her friendship is all he feels..

A remarkably cool and unappreciative attitude toward someone who is risking their life for you and your family as you continue your high school flirting. You are not a bad galan, just a totally uninteresting one.
I'd rather watch any of the kids (Adrián, Estrella et al) rather than Ricardo. Can we get Esperanza another romantic interest?

Or maybe she's grown up all her life surrounded by adoring "orbiters" (N.B. this term is a Tofie creation), that she barely notices the pedestal under her feet.
As regards Margarita and Silvana, she didn't threaten to "flatten" her per se, she ordered her to sit down. "¡Aplástate!", i.e. "Flatten yourself!" is the equivalent of "sit your a** down!". At least, this is my understanding of it. It's one of Carmen Salinas's catchphrases like "bombo", "huerco(a)" and "Ooooh". She certainly has others but none come to mind now.

Funny you should mention this but a few episodes ago, when Ric was collecting the drawings in class, one cute redhead girl told him that she didn't bring her drawing because her dog ate it. He asked her why she didn't draw another one and she said: "Well, why bother? The dog was just gonna eat it anyway!"
I totally see Silvana catching La Sombra, like THAT! She has great observation skills and a hound's ability to track the scent of dodginess. Too bad she doesn't employ her skills in productive pursuits.
As for Carmen Salinas, she has been playing the same character since I first saw her in "María la del Barrio" some 20 years ago.

First and foremost, I consider TN-watching a Spanish learning endeavor. OK, I lie. I enjoy the gorgeous people, the over-the-top plots, the kitschiness, the romance, the locations, the wardrobe, etc... It's a great form of escapism for me but the great bonus is that I'm learning new things and consolidating existing knowledge about a beautiful language and a rich varied culture. To be able to share this passion with all of you is a great honor.
As for the young peoples' pairings: I like Estrella without Adrián and Pedro without Kristel. I'm just not feeling Kristel. I don't know if it's the character or the actress, or both. I like Aranza so far but we don't know enough about her to really judge her character. Pedro, blond cubby, was my favorite after Ricardo, but I'm disappointed in him after the jealousy stunt he pulled, using Aranza. I don't like people who play with other people's feelings. Not cool. I'm still cutting Ricardo slack purely because we don't know yet what happened to him. I know the premise of him crossing the border is ludicrous given his socio-economic level. However, we can't just assume he was financially comfortable from the flashbacks. The ring he gave Esperanza could be his mother's, the house where he hosted the engagement party could be a borrowed, the hawk could be rented. *Slowly exhausting all the excuses possible so I can swoon over Cristián de la Fuente with minimal guilt*
The writers can make Kiko walk tomorrow, if it were up to me. All I pray for is a little early respite from all the dancing and rapping I just know is coming. I wish the new recovered Kiko would pursue all the hobbies he wants off camera but I know I'm asking for too much!

A little late to the party but thank you, Nandicta, you never fail to deliver.
So far I'm finding Ernie much more interesting than Ricky Suave (lol). Ricky is just so mehh, the writers really messed up the characterisation of this galan. I remember watching bad galans, stupid galans, awful galans and so on, but Ric is just blah. They got a total hottie to play the part and they've ruined the rest when it comes to the character.
For starters, how in the world is he a super secret spy, the best that they've got if he arrived in the country as an illegal? They should have made him part of witness protection, say he couldn't contact Espe because of that and to keep her safe and have the bad guys try to track him down (but some truly bad guys, not an art thief ).
I don't really feel Kristel, either, I think homely Pedro is more suited with Aranza then redhead sexbomb.

Then, the little time he spent in the HQ, is just to complain and reprimand Trina, who is the one with the whole weight of this investigation on her shoulders.
Another thing. He said that one year ago, Shadow tried to kill him and instead, scared Roddy for life. Ricardo has been trying to get Shadow but there's always more than one, so that distracts him. So. Shadow has been stealing for more than a year and nobody has been able to get him. If Ricardo and his FBI team are this incompetent, why would Shadow bother? They don't mean a serious risk. I am sure Shadow could go along with his thefts and nobody would ever get him. They say they're trying to kill each other, without actually trying. If I wanna kill someone and I am as smart as Shadow, I am sure I wouldn't fail. Maybe they just like the adrenaline and play cat and mouse. Otherwise, what sense their lives could do?

If he's a crackerjack secret agent and loved Esperanza why didn't he employ some secret spy stuff and track her down, instead relying on a chance encounter in traffic?

My theory: because he had forgotten "he cared" until he saw her again. Still waiting for him to try explain away those 20 years.
Exactly. Ricky Suave forgot about his commitment and love and was distracted for 20 years. I'm waiting for him to blame her for moving on with her life and he set that up by saying he gave her deceased husband all the explanation necessary and dropped it. Ricky wants to ditch his wife and needs a new mommy for his kids so he can run around playing cops and robbers for another 20 years.
Tofie, it would not surprise me if he tried to blame Esperanza some how some way. The conversation with the deceased husband was just lame. The fact that he does not seem to "get" why she resents him putting her and her children in danger as well as making her a continuing target for Tracy by continuing to drag his kids over to her house, just shows how shallow and selfish he is.
