Un Camino Hacia el Destino-Week 9 (Apr 18, 2016)
The accident was provoked by a heartless sister who puts money, envy and entitlement above the sanctity of life and the happiness of her own father, whose days, he feels, are numbered.
Our beloved young heroine was wounded severely and received a blood transfusion from an elderly gentleman who matched her rare blood type. Little do either know they are related as grandfather and granddaughter and neither does Doctor Carlos, who is deeply in love with Fernanda.
Her mother, a most spiteful, acrimonious woman, has been left paralyzed from the waist down and told she will never walk again. Poetic justice? YES? Attitude reforming catastrophe? It doesn't seem so. While she used to let loose with calculated barbs and sarcasm, she tolerated her existence with a man she hated and a daughter she treated with contempt. Now she spits her venomous sentiments at her soon to be ex-husband, whom she blames for everything wrong in her life. She does this within the hearing of her fragile and recovering daughter. She curses them both to leave her alone. She never wants to see either of them again.
Is there a pit deep enough to hold this vile a human being? Will someone take pity on her? We will have to see in the coming week if anyone does.

"Attitude reforming catastrophe? It doesn't seem so".
Indeed.
I must admit, I was not expecting this. I thought this might be a catalyst to bring the fragmented family back together. How very wrong I was.
"Now she spits her venomous sentiments at her soon to be ex-husband"...She curses them both to leave her alone. She never wants to see either of them again."
Isn't there an old adage that you must love yourself before anyone else can love you? I have said many times here that I was flummoxed by the amount of love Amelia received when she warranted none of it.
I thought the indifference chilling and didn't think Amelia could do anything more reprehensible.
Now, Pedro must concentrate all his efforts on Amelia. He has to put his hurt aside and give Fer all the love and support she needs. He has been her Ma/Pa (Sueno credit) all along.
Right after the accident, it appeared Pedro visited Amelia before Fer. Am I wrong? I hope so as that point has really bothered me.
Anita, Amelia has tried (without success) to drive everyone away. I'm not even sure this is going to do it? Sigh...
Diana
I know this is a TN, but this has really shaken me.
Diana
And that poor driver that turned out to be collateral damage, the anvils are a lining up. Of course I think she deserves something much more severe. A man is dead, cuz people are greedy for something that does not belong to them.
That receipt that marissa found can probably be the rope she hangs luiy with. I hope it is, he is such a putz. And she
Should have pedro
Diana--Pedro did indeed visit Amelia first--he was told she was between life and death whereas Fer was severely wounded but would be ok. He didn't want to go see Fer until he'd gotten news of Amelia--after she had that little crisis where they had to use the defibrillator on her again. With his emotions about the possibility of losing the love of his life, I'll give him a pass.
Nina--"...is it that she can't bring herself to realize she's the one who screwed up her own life, and it's just easier to blame everybody else for her own mistakes? I think she's taking the coward's way out and blaming everybody else for your screw-ups." You described Amelia perfectly.
Ok, tea's ready. See you all later.
Fer tells Pedro she knows about Amelia’s family. She knows she has a grandfather and an aunt. Pedro wants to know what else. Only that Amelia told her she wanted to go live with them and take Fer with her and that Pedro knows them. Pedro says he does and will notify them of the accident.
Carlos comes in and sends Pedro back to his room. He needs to sedate her so she can rest. She says she feels fine. She has to be discharged so she can take care of her father. Apparently he’s being discharged soon. She doesn’t want her father to leave her. He won’t. They’ll be seeing each other every day. He begs her to follow the doctor’s orders.
Marissa goes to the jewelry shop where Luis bought the ruby ring. They acknowledge it was purchased there that morning and surely it has been delivered. The clerk is finally talked into giving her the delivery address, but the owner, thinking better of it, refuses to give it to her. He suggests she ask her husband about the ring.
Andrea gets the delivery of Luis’ ring at her spa office. Her eyes pop open wide, but she immediately thinks something is fishy. Meanwhile, Luis makes his excuses to Leo for Marissa’s not joining them for lunch. Leo gets ready to leave and Luis reminds Leo about Andrea. He wouldn’t want his best friend to be made a fool of in order to part him from his money. Leo is sure she’s not like that. The difference, he says, between him and Luis is that Luis thinks the worst of women, while he, Leo, thinks they are all genuine and innocent. He lets Luis pick up the bill for lunch. Luis calls Mariana. She tells Luis Amelia never showed up. She thinks Amelia may have changed her mind about meeting his daughter.
Pedro is getting discharged. Rosaura is there to help her brother. He doesn’t really want to go back to a house that is no longer his home. Rosaura reminds him he’ll need physical therapy and Carlos’ mother is making all the arrangements. She reminds him he needs to be strong for Fernanda. She’ll need him. Rosaura volunteers to go with Pedro to face Old Fer to tell the family about the accident.
Luis returns home unsuspecting of what’s waiting for him. He greets Marissa with a “hello, my love.” She cuts to the chase...who did he buy the ring for he got this morning. He doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She shows him the bill—he paid for it with his credit card. He grins and starts laughing, oh, and eventually, after skirting the answer Marissa wants, he says it was a surprise gift for her. Marissa wants to know where it is. She wants him to show it to her.
Rosario doesn’t feel well. Clarita thinks she should go rest and she’s willing to do the cooking. Rosario says she can’t because she’s afraid Luis will fire her, despite Carlos giving her orders to rest. Rosario isn’t just afraid, she knows, because Luis said so.
Carlos leans over a sedated, sleeping Fer. He tells her how all their dreams of being together might have ended in an instant. That’s his punishment, not to feel her love. Fer dreams, weaving his words into a fantasy sequence where they pledge their love to each other and though things became difficult, he will never leave her. The dream ends. Fer is still asleep, but she says clearly, “Carlos, that’s why I love you.” He answers her with an I love you, too and touches her lips with his, a tear glistening on his cheek.
Camila arrives at the hospital to see Carlos. She hadn’t heard about the accident, but is quite affected by the news. Carlos takes her to see Fer. He tells her Fer will recover, but her mother will be a paraplegic. Carlos tells her it was Don Fernando who gave Fer blood or she might not have made it. Cam is surprised to hear her step-grandfather’s name mentioned. Carlos wants to take her out of the room so Fer won’t wake up, but she is awake and wants Camila to stay. She goes to Fer’s side and hears Fer tell her how her mother said she doesn’t love her. She feels so alone. She feels like an orphan. Camila says she feels the same way.
Dr. Macias enters. He wants them both to leave Fer's room. He orders Carlos to go home. He’s had no sleep for two days. Carlos wants to stay. Macias lets Camila stay, but sends Carlos home. Cam and Fer cry. Fer wonders how she can live without seeing her mother. They always lived together. She doesn’t understand what to do with all this pain. They hug.
Pedro and Rosaura arrive at the Altamirano house. Mariana and Hernán want to know why they are there. Pedro says it’s something serious. Amelia was in an accident. Mariana jumps to her most favored conclusion—she’s dead. No, answers Pedro, she’s not, but she is paralyzed and won’t walk again. Mariana seems genuinely distraught by the news then asks about the daughter who was accompanying her. Is she dead? Rosaura steps in and wants to know why Mariana is so preoccupied with death. Is it important to Mariana they die? Rosaura got that impression by observing her reaction—more interested in death than in life for the victims. Mariana says she’s concerned because she is a blood relative, unlike Rosaura. Ros says she’s been closer to both Amelia and Fer longer than Mariana. Mari says it’s not her fault. Pedro finally tells her Fer lived.
When Mariana tells Pedro her father is away on a trip, he’s confused. He thought Old Fer had forgiven Amelia and she was on her way back to live at the hacienda with Fer. Mariana doesn’t know where he got that idea. He says Amelia told him so. Mariana says it’s not true. She says it’s been ages since they’ve seen her. Pedro knows Mariana went to their house and they saw each other. They even talked on the phone. Mariana remembers talking to Pedro, but he has to believe her, she never saw Amelia. She warns that Amelia had better not show up here. Her father wants nothing to do with her.
Back to Luis. Marissa is really angry because he is telling her she’s silly to be making things up. He doesn’t have a lover. Marissa doesn’t believe him. She’s not stupid. Does he have a lover? Was this ring for his lover? Marissa wants the truth. If the ring were for her, the jeweler would not have had a problem giving her the delivery address. Where is the ring? Luis laughs unconvincingly, he sent it to the bank. Marissa demands to know why he’s lying. Why would he have sent it there if the gift was a surprise for her. Carlos walks in to hear this argument going on. It takes him a moment to figure out they are talking about Luis having a lover, with Marissa enumerating the proofs she thinks she has.
Carlos comes to his mother’s defense and socks Luis. They start to fight. Marissa separates them and tells Carlos to leave. She’ll be ok with him alone. Luis is mad that Carlos hit him and Marissa wouldn't let Luis smash his face in. Marissa tells him to shut up. It’s her son. Luis says she got what she wanted, to humiliate him in front of Carlos. What did he expect, retorts Marissa, that Luis insult her and her son does not defend her? Luis would like to talk to her calmly. She says she has nothing more to talk to him about and leaves.
Old Fer is at the beach, but he’s in his room and won’t leave. He admits he wanted to get away from his house where he wouldn’t be haunted by his memories. Yes, yes, says Nana Blanca, but they did follow him here. He thinks it might be better to lose his memory than to suffer with these memories.
Pedro has come to tell Fer he did see Amelia’s family. How did they take the news? She wants to know the details. Pedro wants to know why. Fer says she knows they hate him. Her mother told her the whole story right before the accident. Pedro now wants to know what she was told. Fer realizes she can’t tell him the part about Pedro not being her father, but she tells him the rest. Pedro agrees with her version—that he’s the one responsible for Amelia getting thrown out. He tells her Amelia’s family still despises him. If so, then Fer wants to know why they sent for her and Amelia. Pedro doesn’t know, but still, they are her family. Fer insists her family is Pedro and her mother. Now, even if it’s just the two of them, they’ll always be together.
Mariana and Hernán agree not to tell Old Fer anything about Pedro’s visit and to prevent, at all cost, Amelia and her daughter coming to live with them. Camila gets back from the hospital and muses to Hernán why people have to be so mean. Her best friend’s mother just disowned her.
Nana Rosario is out sweeping the walks. She feels very ill. She’s having chest pains, but is determined to overcome them. She’s not very convincing.
Lucero remembers her kiss with Diego; then she remembers his backing away. Avelina comes in to Lucero’s room. She has to study, but can’t concentrate in her room. She feels faint and Luce makes her lie down. She tells Luce she wants to do well in her studies for her parents' sake. She’s afraid of everything outside the walls of the school. Luce encourages her to work for herself and take care of herself. Luce thinks she’s too thin.
Isabela is pouring drinks for herself and Andrea. Andrea is going on about how she really gets along well with Leo, but it’s too early to tell if they can make a go of it. They have an unexpected arrival. It’s Marissa, who is falling apart because she just learned Luis has a mistress. Andrea and Isy can only look at each other.
Pedro is visiting a sleeping Fer. Carlos comes in to tell Pedro he’s been discharged and his PT starts the next day. Pedro moves away from Fer and Carlos takes his place close to Fer. He lightly touches her arm, then leans over to kiss her cheek. Pedro must surely recognize this is a gesture of true love.
Luis has showed up at Andrea’s apartment to demand she return the ring. Andrea, of course, knows why he wants it back, but she strings him along for a bit. He’s in serious problems and needs it back. Andrea says she knows the problem is his wife. He’s naught but a coward for not just telling Marissa the ring was for her, Andrea. He’s a selfish, cynical cad who can’t assume the consequences for his own actions. He’ll never give up the advantages of having a rich wife. She tells him to forget about getting the ring back. He again demands it. She says that before she gives it to him, she’ll go to his wife and give it to her. That earns her a slap. He starts to get rough. She tells him he’ll have to beat her to death before she gives up the ring.
Pedro has returned to the cottage. Marissa is with him. She won’t take no for an answer regarding his therapy. She’s a woman and she’s made up her mind. He puts up a gentlemanly fight, but she wins the right to assume his care. She tells him she’s become very fond of him, he’s her confidant, and they are friends. He tries to tell her rich folks and poor folks can never be friends. She replies that maybe not all rich folks or all poor folks can be friends, but she can, so he's to get rid of that notion right away. She asks please.
Head Mistress Rosaura, Sor Sonrisa, Lucero, Camila and Avelina all visit Fer. They sing and dance in her hospital room.
"He’s a selfish, cynical cad who can’t assume the consequences for his own actions"
Oh, but Luis is much worse than that and hope that if he beats a ring out of Andrea, Marissa doesn't fall for it.
Cute, the girls singing and dancing in the hospital room and lightened the mood of both Fernanda and I.
Pedro is a nice guy but dumber than dirt.
My jaw dropped as Mariana told Pedro Fernando had no intention of forgiving his daughter and she'll get away with it. 3 great nastys in this show. Luis and the wannabe sister wives.
I also believe Carlos loves Fernanda and he's sorry he hurt her. How could anyone that loves Fernanda hurt that girl? He better make this right. No more omission stuff or being loose with the truth Carlos. I mean it.
Your insights are marvelous and you capture all of the action and events seamlessly with kindness and compassion.
"Mariana jumps to her most favored conclusion—she’s dead" was my favorite of many.
There were many touching moments last night, none more than "Fer wonders how she can live without seeing her mother...She doesn’t understand what to do with all this pain". Yes, and our pity goes out to you sweet girl - we feel your suffering all too well.
The most intelligent person in this is Rosaura. No question. "Is she dead? Rosaura steps in and wants to know why Mariana is so preoccupied with death. Is it important to Mariana they die? Rosaura got that impression by observing her reaction—more interested in death than in life for the victims". Ahhh. While I'm glad Rosaura's heartfelt prayers have released hundreds of souls from Purgatory, I am happy she is using her uncanny insight to call Mariana (and Amelia out) on their lies and deceit.
"She cuts to the chase...who did he buy the ring for he got this morning. He doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She shows him the bill—he paid for it with his credit card..Marissa wants to know where it is. She wants him to show it to her." While I applauded her realization her husband is a lying, cheating snake, my heart plummeted when she turned to the traitorous twosome for consolation: "It’s Marissa, who is falling apart because she just learned Luis has a mistress". I gain hope though that these two marvelous women are in Pedro's court.
Ignacio visited Marisa (or was that 2 nights ago? Maybe I'm confused). I believe he told her she was a marvelous woman. Did that happen or did I dream that?
tofie, "Luis and the wannabe sister wives" was great.
Anita, thank you for providing a wonderful recap and for your dedication and care, night after night.
You are truly appreciated!
Diana
In this episode we were mercifully spared very much interaction with Isabela.
Not so with Mariana. Geez, what an evil, manipulative bitch. I simply can't wait for her anvil to arrive. I would make it myself, but I'm afraid that if I put as much iron in it as I think she deserves, it would strain the family budget.
I am hoping that all observers will recognize that Carlos is acting like a man who is deeply in love with Fer.
Hah! Luis is caught like a chicken-stealing fox! He is so inept that all of his master ploys lead to disaster. I hope Marissa doesn't let him off the hook, that she keeps her antenna up and really gets the goods on him.
So Pedro and Marissa have turned a corner of sorts. He, burned by his interaction with rich people, is correctly reticent; she, growing out of her former shell and into new realizations, proclaims that of course rich people can be friends with poor people.
So, with all the evil machinations radiating from all the evil people, we are spared Fer having to live in Don Fer's toxic household for a while, thank God. I just can't imagine her fragile self dealing with all the venom and duplicity in that house at the present time.
I don't know where they are going with the Avelina story line, but I hope they tread lightly and treat it with the respect it deserves. I really feel sorry for young people who have such a low self esteem as to harm themselves.
Lucero and Diego are going someplace, but I can't fathom where this might lead. I think maybe Diego's days as an instructor at Catholic school for girls are numbered. I don't know exactly how I feel about this. On the one hand, it is certainly possible for an older man to take advantage of a younger girl, but Diego most assuredly is not doing this. Plus, this tn seems to have as thread woven through it, the possibility of love between otherwise age-inappropriate partners.
Thanks again, Anita.
David
And yes, Diego has no hidden agenda. He seems genuine and did seem rather shaken when Lucero kissed him. He knew to pull back but yet seems somewhat naïve.
And while I'm preoccupied with Fer and her matters of the heart, Avelina's physical and mental state seem to be crumbling. I hope she gets the support she needs.
Diana
Couldn't agree more. I once had a patient who I was seeing for something else who, in the course of our conversation stated that she was extremely dissatisfied with her physical appearance. I was stunned. She was perhaps 13 or 14, had been through menarche, and was developing secondary sexual characteristics. She was a very attractive young woman, and I told her so, but she still clung to her harsh self image. In that time, it wasn't appreciated how devastating such a self image could be. I wish I would have referred her to someone who perhaps could have provided the support that she needed.
David
That is natural.
Loathing oneself and seeing a distorted image is another all together.
David, I'm sure your words were a help to her and hopefully, your patient received the care that she needed.
Diana
Now I realize why I truly love this TN more so than others.
Fer has friends! Ok, I'm done. Naw, but seriously most of the female characters have one or no friends.
Carlos had a friend...his friend has become his rival (typical in soaps), but they were friends when it began and he's trying to maintain that friendship.
Last night was the best episode for me to date.
My favorite scenes were Fer and Cami crying together.
Marissa realizing that her husband is a rat bastard and giving him the business.
Carlos punching that rat bastard.
Andrea giving him more business. He is a coward Andrea, because he has been beat by men (claiming he is tough) but he only actually hit a woman. Typical of most abusers.
I realize that some scenes must have been cut (Marissa shows up to Isy's, drops a bomb and we get no feedback?)
Rosaura pulls Mariana's card and realizes she's a sneaky slithering slimy snake.
However...my real comment that I've been waiting to say is Hernan! He is the only one with all of the information. He's met Pedro. He knows that Pedro is the father of Camilla's friend. Wait a minute! That same man showed up at his house claiming to be the husband of his wife's sister? Camilla's best friend's father is also the husband of his sister-in-law. His face did a double take, but has he actually put it together. He can't be stupid.
The people we are rooting for to achieve their desires are still struggling with their demons, self-made or imposed.
Tofie--"Pedro is dumber than dirt." He's been breathing in too much potting mix and plant food. His problem is a one track mind--Amelia, he has only one vision--Amelia and he has only one heart--for Amelia.
Fernanda is the Amelia he never had, the sweet, loving, guiless girl he thought Amelia was. Amelia never gave him any other impression at the hacienda where he was falling in love with her.
No wonder it hurt him not to be corresponded and to see her go off with Luis to the waterfall. Pedro--we know you were a good Samaritan, but it just wasn't going to work from the beginning, not with Amelia. She was your opposite, a one track mind--Luis, one fantasy--Luis, and one heart--for Luis.
Diana--You weren't dreaming. Ignacio was at Amelia's bedside (I'm sure you meant Amelia) at the end of Friday night's episode and again at the beginning of Monday's. They just repeated it. He said what you said, that Amelia was marvelous and unique. I just didn't want to have to retype it. It stuck in my craw. Ignacio is dumber than legal documents.
David--Thank you for sharing your story. It's the sort of thing you don't forget, obviously. It's not only the super thin but overweight children, too, who suffer from damaging self-image problems. My daughter was within the normal weight range, but was intensely bullied in junior high school by boys calling her a fatso. Once that term is applied and gets used as a weapon to hurt, you begin to believe it yourself. It damaged her self-image for years. Fortunately, without expensive therapy, she did a lot of self-examination and has been able to put it behind her. She's happy with herself and healthy, although still somewhat overweight (like her mother and brother---aargh...it runs in the family).
I wonder if he will "share" that information with Mariana. Right now they are in this together. They both want Fernanda out of the picture so Old Fer won't have anyone to leave his fortune to except them. Good One!!
What an amazing observation.
So, Amelia must have been somewhat sweet once upon a time? I missed many of the initial episodes so I never saw her that way. I am hoping that is true as Pedro would have been in love with a monster rather than a sweet loving girl who turned bitter at Luis' betrayal.
Diana
The scenes with Rosario and Andrea were scary to watch. No matter what happens, Luis deserves a big anvil.
My favorite scene was when Rosaura got wise to Mariana's plot. I think it went right over Pedro's head though.
I'm not digging the age differences in this TN, especially since the Luis/Marissa relationship was purely for money. I wonder if the original TN writer was a man.
I'm also beginning to wonder if Diego might be married.
Aleta--It's interesting to compare Fer and Lucero's attractions to these older men. In Fer's case it was mutual and instantaneous. The love-bug bit them both at the same time. She made it possible to see Carlos on a couple of occasions before he kissed her for the first time. And it was she who came to him at the clinic after spending the previous afternoon together at the restaurant. He was ready for love and she was ready for a Carlos to come into her life. He asked her if she minded that first kiss and she said no.
In Lucero's case, the initial attraction was one sided, but she also made herself available to Diego and encouraged their finding the occasions to be alone together. I don't think he was ready for love, not with a schoolgirl and he's been behaving appropriately, so far. She has initiated all the physical contact. We have to wait to see what he thinks about Lucero as a potential love interest (at least within our earshot--and it shouldn't be long).
The lying liars never stop lying. Tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber are so stupid. Im glad the sista is on to them. Why isn't pedro? Why did the writers give him such a beautiful heart and make him so dumb? I hate to say that but, WOW!!! if they did this to make it playoff good for amelia's meaness, stop it writers please stop it. They don't to make him a doprmat for this.........this horrible woman. He needs a brake, and smarten him up please!!! Sheesh!!!
I wish ol fer's sidekick would call back home to see whats going on so she can tell the ol guy that all is not lost. Granddaughter is willin to fight to stay with her dad, good for you babygirl. somebody in that family got to have some fight in them, besides evil sister #2. Is she younger or older than amelia? It don't matter they're both nasty mean.
Thanks Anita :-D
Aleta, it never crossed my mind that Diego is married but it's a very valid and possible point. Perish the thought...:)
Diana
"I don't think Amelia ever saw Pedro as a potential boyfriend."
No, she didn't. She was having fun with him but deep down he was always "the servant" for her, you know? Amelia would never consider a lower class man as a potential boyfriend/husband. That's why when she was later forced to live with Pedro she continuously insulted him, telling him he was "just a gardener".
Nina, Pedro and Marissa are really cute together. And yes, they would be the sweetest couple. They both have a heart of gold.
I'm so excited to see the truth come out for Fernanda as to who she really is. I love Pedro and I understand his need to protect his daughter, but I think lying to her does him no good in the long run. I hope that he truly comes clean with her about who he is and how he came to be her father, it would be best if he heard it from her.
I still have no pity for Ms. bitchy bangs or that she suddenly feels less than a woman because she's paralyzed. The truth is that she was never much of a woman when she had full use of her legs. She has treated her husband and her daughter like dirt on her the soles of her feet. It's fitting that now she must have a view of everyone's life going on while she has a front row SEAT.
I was so moved by Carlos sitting vigil with Fer, as she dreamed. His single tear and quivering lips really moved me. The actor is doing a wonderful job at conveying the goodness and deep love Carlos has in his heart for Fernanda.
I really really hope that Marissa is not manipulated by Luis, but I fear that it's too early in the TN for Luis to be busted on his cheating ways. Unless he is left out in the street trying to figure out a way to get Don Fer's $$'s? Could it be that Luis will try to reclaim bitchy and Fer, just so that he can get his hands on Fer's fortune? It's obvious that the bitter bruja still loves Luis. He may use her being paralyzed as a way to manipulate her into taking him back and letting him manage Fer's fortune. The last thing I want is for Old Don Fer to lose his mind completely and sign over that fortune to Luis to manage for Fer. Ugh!
Kendra, I wonder too what Hernan will do with all of this new found information. I loved Sister Rosaura's skeptical 'girl ain't nobody buying your lies' face as Mariana lied about Don Fer wanting his daughter and granddaughter home.
I wonder if Andrea is the one who is not long for this TN. It sure looks like Luis is capable of just about anything to hold on to his fortune.
Poor NaNa Rosario..I hope she doesn't die. Carlos would be lost without her. DIE LUIS!!
I love the friendship between Marissa and Pedro. Fingers crossed these two move on from their venomous unworthy spouses and begin to bond and bloom!
I love this TN. Thank you Anita!
I agree that Marissa and Pedro should end up together. It shouldn't be much of a stretch since they have been friends for a long time. (Although Pedro doesn't seem to realize it. He is kinda dense, isn't he?) Marissa must not have many friends if she has to go to Isabella for comfort, bless her heart.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes Blanca to work out what has been going on at the hacienda while she and Old Fer were at the beach. Blanca is my very favorite character. Her expressions, her beauty.... She'd better quit letting the baddies know how much she knows, though. Doesn't she watch telenovelas?
Your faithful scribe has been called to do her civic duty. I waited till the last minute, hoping my group wouldn't be called, but I must report for jury duty tomorrow morning at 7:00 am. I have to travel some distance, meaning I must be up by 4:30. When recapping I get to sleep around 2, leaving only a couple of hours for sleep. Can't do it any more.
If they choose me for a trial, I may be MIA for the length of the trial. I won't know until tomorrow.
This couldn't happen at a worse time for me and Un Camino. I have become so invested in this telenovela, I can't bear to think of any unspecified amount of time away from it.
Traveling mercies and I hope your jury service (whether you serve or not) goes well.
I so wish I could help out on the recapping but this TN is way above and beyond my understanding. If there is anything I can add, I certainly well but that is likely doubtful.
Like you, I eagerly look forward to this every night and regret having to miss even a moment.
Your recaps are so appreciated. I feel badly you are up so late summarizing this every night. Your dedication is very, very much valued. As are you...
Diana
You have a safe journey driving that time of morning. Be safe.
I kid of course, but safe travels. I hope it all passes quickly so we can have you here with us. Your recaps will be greatly missed.
I think the lot of us can at least continue to manage some sort of discussion if we have some bullet points to at least guide the discussion. It will not be the beautifully written prose of Anita, but I'd hate to see us drop discussion for lack of recaps.
David
My favorite was Pedro and Fernanda reminiscing about their close bond, love and affection.
I also enjoyed Pedro and Marissa's honest, sweet conversation. A deep friendship appears to be blossoming. We can only hope for more.
Fernanda and Carlos are one of my favorite couples. Fernanda's sweetness and light is a joy to behold. Carlos is radiant when they are together, isn't he?
Mariana and Luis were both reprehensible. Luis was trying to slither his way back into Marissa's good graces. I sense she wants to believe him but knows she can't. Stay strong sister!
I can't remember much more but I hope someone will be able to fill this in much more than I could.
Diana
Steve--I deleted your comment because you included a spoiler. What you referred to hasn't happened yet. You can repost when it happens, ok?
David--I tried once, in my head, pre-judging the defendant in a criminal trial, because he LOOKED like a guilty, no-good, criminal. He's lucky they didn't pick me for that one.
To all--I can't tell you when I've savored rejection as much as I did today. They didn't want me, nor most of the 300 other souls who showed up at the Courthouse at 7:00 am. It must have been a slow day. I was in a back-up pool and we got dismissed last. Anyway, whether you like it or not....I'm baaack.
My highlights were Marisa and Pedro's talk. Pedro's confirmation that he is no longer married to the woman that he wasn't really married to.
Oh, as much as I despise Luis, he did give Pedro a big ole dose of reality. I had to do a "oh, well he got you there!" when he told him that Luis will always have the one thing that Pedro has always wanted (even though he was an a**) and that is Amelia's love...DAMN! Cut him to the quick!
Fer and Carlos being friends again. (I agree too Diana)
Mariana trying to choke Amelia (don't like Mariana, but really didn't care if she had done that) it's so stupid. You kill a person in the hospital by getting to the IV not asphyxiation.
Hernan is a pimp daddy, but he loves her. I just didn't know how to take that one.
I guess that trip to the beach was an overnighter because I am confused.
Andrea got beat up...Luis confessed, but it made no sense. You gave an expensive ruby that needed to be delivered to a one-night stand/call girl? Is that what he said?
I need to change professions. LOL!
She must have
While I am sorry that the court will not be the recipient of your wise judgment, I must say that I am selfishly relieved as we need you here!
I know you would have done an amazing job with what was another revealing, heartrending episode. But, I am positive more longing, angst and mayhem is on the near horizon!
Kendra, thank you for the excellent highlights. I'm still laughing at "I need to change professions. LOL! She must have". Excellent!
Diana
I expected Old Fer and Nana Blanca to be away for much longer, too. But she told him he couldn't get away from his problems, his problems followed him there. He *was* right about wanting to get away from Mariana--she was driving him loco. Of course, she was telling the truth, he'd just forgotten about giving blood and going to the hospital.
Quick overview, but includes some significant conversations.
Marissa and Pedro agree to be friends. He notes she is preoccupied about something. She tells him her life just got complicated. She’s learned what kind of man she’s married to. Pedro advises to ask her heart and then make a decision. Marissa says either way she’ll end up the loser. She learns about his divorce and wonders what kind of woman would leave someone who….can make such delicious coffee….and, says Pedro, falls out of trees. The moment is lightened by laughter. They compliment each other (I’d say they also complement each other, too.) She shares with Pedro that her husband is cheating on her but she doesn’t have the courage nor the strength to leave him.
He thinks she does. Marissa acknowledges she has it for business, but not her personal life. There she’s afraid, feels insecure. Pedro says she’s not alone. Marissa says she is. Pedro says she has him. She thanks him. She’s known for a long time he married her for money. The time to have left him was 20 years ago, when she married him. She feels trapped by a dream she had when she married him.
Carlos and Fer agree to be friends. (Darn. How long is this going to last.) Carlos leaves a violin-shaped clock next to Fer. He touches her gently and says to her sleeping form that as long as that clock is running, his love for her stays alive and that clock will never stop. Fer stirs and sits up. She asks if that’s also how long she’ll stay angry with him. He says no. For that he has a little hour glass filled with sand. When the sand runs through it and he turns it over, her anger will be gone (he hopes). He tells her he can’t live his life having her near him but not be able to be “with” her. He asks her to forgive him, please.
When she says nothing, Carlos says, friends, then? Fer says that’s all she can offer right now. He says he loves her with all his heart. Fer replies she loves him, too, but…her life is so complicated, so many things to assimilate and she needs to be taking care of her father. He understands her. But what he feels for her is very strong and he’ll be with her in good times and bad, always. He kisses her hands. She just looks at him. Fer wants to be discharged. She needs to be with her father.
Carlos tells Fer he can’t say her rejection doesn’t hurt. Fer says she’s not rejecting him. She just wants a little time and space to fix the things in her life without them affecting the beauty of their relationship later. Carlos says two people that love each other can deal with problems together and solve them together. Fer says she’s not asking him to leave her. She wants him to stay. Carlos accepts her terms, reluctantly. He’ll always be with her, he loves her with all his heart.
Felipe interrupts. He’s there as her friend. He gets the hug Carlos should have had.
Hernán urges Camila to get busy and trap Carlos into marriage. No excuses. Isn’t she a woman? (As if that is all it takes—you misogynist creep.)
Ignacio visits Amelia again. She’s depressed because no one from her “other” family has been to see her. She has to explain who she really is, an Altamirano from High Society (Honey, Grace Kelly you are not.)
Mariana plans to finish the job on Amelia. If her daddy couldn’t come to love Mariana the way he loved Amelia, then she’s not going to allow him to love anyone else.
Luis arrives and Mariana fills his ears with lies. Amelia was gravely injured. They don’t know her condition. No one knows if her daughter was with her or not. She was going to see the gardener to learn the latest. Luis is visibly upset (because there goes the money tree). When Luis says he’ll go tell Old Fer he’s the father of Old Fer’s grandchild, Mariana scoffs and dares him to and adds the part that he’s also responsible for Old Fer throwing his beloved daughter out? He might, Luis says. And what of Marissa, wonders Mariana, what will he tell her? That shuts him up. Mariana says he won’t say a thing because he’s a coward.
Lupe feeds Pedro and says she’s on the side of justice. Luis barges in. Lupe gets out of the way. Pedro LIES! He tells Luis he’ll never get his hands on Fernanda because he and Amelia agreed and sent her far away to relatives in Oaxaca.
Mariana tries to rekill Amelia by suffocating her. She fails. When she’s discovered in the room, Amelia wants her to stay. Mariana cries crocodile tears over Amelia’s condition. Amelia cries poor-me tears over her condition. Mariana tells her she can’t come to the house because Old Fer’s memory is so bad he’s living in the past most of the time and wants nothing to do with her. She tells Amelia her father thought it would have been better if she had died in the accident. Amelia begs for help because she has nowhere to go. Mar says she can’t help.
Luis is an a**hole to Rosario again, after Carlos put her to bed. He tells her to get up and fix his meal. He gives the orders around there. He “owns” her life. She serves him his meal, complaining she’s not well. He doesn’t want to hear it. He doesn’t like it. It’s cold. He’s going to talk to Marissa right away to fire her.
Leo finds out someone hit Andrea. She admits it was her (married) novio. Leo is shocked.
Hernán is going to make sure Amelia and Fernanda stay disappeared—permanently.
Carlos tells Pedro Fer has left her hospital bed to go see her mother again. Pedro is disgusted. So is Carlos. Indeed, Amelia blames Fer for her predicament and orders her to get away from her and leave. Another crisis. Pedro reaches Fer’s side. They tearfully agree they will be together against the world.
Marissa doesn’t want to talk about Rosario. She’s Carlos’ nanny and he’s in charge of her. The only thing they have to talk about is The Ring. Luis obviously doesn’t have the ring, so he tells her he’s ready to confess. He admits the ring was for another woman. Da Ding.
It was an insignificant fling that started in a restaurant bar. One thing led to another after a few drinks. She lived alone. They started an affair. Then he realized what a stupid thing he was doing. He gave her the ring to get rid of her—payoff for whatever emotions she had invested in him. He swears he loves only Marissa and is not seeing her anymore. It will never happen again. He doesn’t think his little “aventura” should put at risk this solid marriage they have. Marissa doesn’t look convinced. Luis swears he’s sincere. Well, says Marissa, if he’s sincere and loves her as he says he does, she wants the name of the woman. She wants to know who she is before she’s convinced to make another go with him.
Episode ends with some allusions to secrets between Pedro and Fer as they kneel in the hospital chapel.
I will put up tonight's episode (Wed) tomorrow.
Sorry, it was asphyxiation, not suffocation. The suffocation took place on Quien es Quien. Unfortunately that one did not fail.
Kendra--LOL "Pedro's confirmation that he is no longer married to the woman that he wasn't really married to."
Amelia hasn't changed.
Luiy is still a kingsize jackass.
Hernin still wants to pimp out his lust filled daughter.
Mariana is still a lying liar.
I was hoping carlos' nana would thrown that cold soup in luiys face, but shes to sweet. I really hope theres not a Slow Lul cuz It sure feels like its about to slow down. Ok, how many more episodes? Don't matter, a whole lot of crap gotta go down before the happy endings make an appearance.
Thanks Anita, and welcome back girl.
"They compliment each other (I’d say they also complement each other, too)", "He gets the hug Carlos should have had" and "Isn’t she a woman? (As if that is all it takes—you misogynist creep)" were but a few of my favorites of many.
"He touches her gently and says to her sleeping form that as long as that clock is running, his love for her stays alive and that clock will never stop". How could Fernanda resist such a plea? I know I could not have. But in her defense, I give her credit for realizing she has much to deal with emotionally and her desire to take care of her father overrides everything else now. How long will it take her tender heart to recover from Amelia's barbs that she is responsible? Sigh.
"Pedro reaches Fer’s side. They tearfully agree they will be together against the world". Was there a dry eye anywhere??
"Carlos leaves a violin-shaped clock next to Fer". Loved it.
"Episode ends with some allusions to secrets between Pedro and Fer as they kneel in the hospital chapel". In spite of all their heartache (thank you Amelia), they have each other. At least some great fortune amidst the turmoil.
What a shame Luis and Mariana didn't get together in the beginning. They would have made each other deliriously unhappy yet would not have sullied the lives of Amelia, Marissa and Fernanda. Like should but doesn't always seek like, does it?
God bless Lupe. What a kind woman. Another generous warm heart Amelia discarded all too easily.
Thank you so much Anita. This was wonderful.
Diana
I wish I would have bought an egg timer 46 years ago and told my new wife that she could only be angry with me until the sands ran out.
Camila's mother must have been an super attractive woman. How else could Camila turned out to be so pretty with such a spectacularly unattractive father? And his unattractiveness doesn't stop with his physical appearance, it extends clear to the core of his soul. Of course, he is at least consistant in his approach to relationships; he told Camilla that he was in a relationship with a crazy woman, and he wants the same thing for her!!
I am unclear on exactly who is the one in authority in the Carlos-Marissa-Luis household. I thought earlier that they said that the house was left to Carlos? Therefore, Luis is allowed to live there out of curtesy to Marissa's love for him? Yet he keeps throwing his weight around. Maybe I missed something there?
Well, Marissa will certainly find out who Luis' squeeze is, and will be horrified, of course. Luis should have said, "I not only gave her an expensive ring, I also gave her a black eye."
Thanks again, Anita!
David
Throwing his weight around women of a lower status than his (acquired status) seems to work for him. Remember his poor secretary in that early episode when she let Carlos in while Mariana was in the office with him? He has no qualms about hitting women, either. LOL at "Luis should have said, 'I not only gave her an expensive ring, I also gave her a black eye.'"
Wednesday's episode is ready for transcription. It'll be posted soon.
Very good David! A definite entry for the Husband's Handbook.
Diana
Luis continues in confession-mode. He tries to raise his sorry self’s image in Marissa’s eyes by insisting his one fling meant nothing, she was a hussy, a floozy, nothing more. He sure looks pitiful, sounds pitiful, acts pitiful, but isn’t. He will cleave only unto her from now on until the hour of his death. (I made that up, but that’s what he wants her to believe.) Marissa still wants a name. Luis wants to know why. He begs her to forget it. Better she not have a face. Knowing her name, Luis is sure she’ll seek her out and cause a scandal. It’s not worth the humiliation. Marissa says then he really doesn’t know her, his wife.
Marissa loses her resolve. She wants to know if she’s younger, prettier, thinner. Was Luis bored with her? Luis sees an opening. He makes his moves, it’s check, then check mate. Marissa falls for his insincere foreplay and we turn away so as not to have to watch Marissa’s Waterloo (nice orchestral music, though).
Isabela is back to bug Carlos at his open air office. He’s annoyed just by her presence. She was hoping they could clear the air and get back together. When he says it’s not happening, she says she only wants his happiness and if it’s not with her, then she’s disposed to go tell Fernanda she was at fault for the whole fake pregnancy story. Maybe then Fernanda will forgive him. Carlos says he doesn’t want Isy near Fernanda. He knows Isy too well and who knows what sort of story she’ll tell next. Carlos says no thanks and he’s fully capable of talking to Fernanda and having her forgive him all by himself. He asks her to leave. Before she does, she tries one-upmanship over his mother’s deteriorating relationship with Luis. Carlos knows what Luis is like. Nothing he does surprises him. Luis has been like that since Carlos was a pup. Isy says Marissa is planning to divorce him. Carlos is good with that. He watches her leave. It’s hard to tell from his expression whether he’s thinking about his mother, Fernanda or Isabela.
Felipe has come back to visit Fer. She must be getting better. She’s not wearing her hospital headband and her hair is perky again. Felipe tells her he has won a scholarship to study in Barcelona. He’ll pass it up if Fer wants him to stay—needs him, as a friend. Fer says she can’t stand in his way to advance his career and he should go. He seems to be a little disappointed, but covers it well with smiles and hugs.
Carlos scolds Nana Rosario because she hasn’t been following doctor’s orders. She smiles and says she’s fine. He can tell she’s not. She needs to have those exams to find out what’s wrong. Rosario thinks to herself she can’t tell Carlos of Luis’ threats. She laughs it off. Rosario is disappointed to learn Fer isn’t Carlos’ novia any longer. Carlos is hopeful, though. They are talking again—as friends and he will bide his time and win her heart again.
He tells Rosario he heard his mother is going to divorce Luis, just as Marissa arrives. She wishes to speak to Carlos alone. She tells him she forgave Luis. Carlos is furious. The man cheated on her. The gist of this very intricate dance between mother and son is that the next time he pleads with Fernanda to forgive him for cheating on her with Isabela, he’s wearing Luis’ shoes and walking Luis’ mile of shame. Somehow, Carlos’ transgression doesn’t rise to the same level as Luis’ but never mind, it had the effect his mother wished. She also wants Carlos to forgive Luis. Carlos can’t believe she’s asking this of him, but he will for her sake. It doesn’t make him hate Luis any less or any more than he already does.
Pedro tries to sneak out of the house to go see Fernanda and avoid PT. Marissa, a nurse and the therapist catch him. He says he’s sorry, he can’t do PT today, he has to get to the hospital. Marissa says Fer is ok and he must go through PT for himself and for Fernanda. With therapy he will recover better and quicker. We have to watch all the grimaces and grins, but Marissa gets to watch, too. She offers encouragement when it gets painful.
Dr. Macias examines Amelia. She doesn't react. She’s transferred to a regular room. Lupe and Ignacio supervise. They try to lift her spirits. She doesn’t react. Carlos brings her an origami flower Fernanda made. She doesn’t react. Amelia says to herself Pedro and Fer are dead to her, just as she is one of the living dead.
Marissa brings Pedro some edible arrangement to his cottage. He’s happy to see her. She’s happy to be there. They eat, have coffee and talk. Then they make corn muffins together. It’s something that keeps them together, enjoying each other’s company. They hug each other in delight over the muffins. This is probably the first hug Pedro has received from a woman his age who is not his sister—ever. For a moment he loses himself in Marissa’s arms.
Carlos takes advantage of Fer’s last days as his patient to play cards with her. She cheats (I think). Anyway, she ends up with all the beans. She’ll be discharged soon, Carlos says, to go home, go back to school and, Fer interrupts, to take care of her father. Ah, says Carlos, his mother is doing a good job at that. Fer is grateful.
Marissa is back for another visit to Pedro. It seems his PT is over and there won’t be any other excuse for them to see each other so easily. Pedro can’t thank her enough for what she’s done for him. Marissa tells him she did it with great affection. These days have been wonderful for both of them, she continues, they’ve gotten to know each other better, they’re better friends, he’s a wonderful man. Her hands are on his arm. He puts his other hand on top of hers. Pedro stands up, holding one of her hands and tells her she’s wonderful, too. Then he pulls her a bit awkwardly, into his arms. She pats him on the back a little, but he has the same look on his face as the first time they hugged.
Felipe comes to say goodbye to Carlos. Despite their recent differences, they are bros for ever, they give each other a bro hug.
After all the attention Pedro has had from Marissa, he goes back to pining after that ungrateful, hateful Amelia. He cradles her photo and cries and cries how he’s always loved her. He gave her his best, hoping for a little crumb of care in return, but all he got was pain and hate. What is he going to do without her, he moans. He doesn’t want to live without her.
Fer interrupts this unhappy scene. Pedro grabs her and holds onto her for dear life. He seems reanimated.
Rosaura welcomes the students who will be doing their university studies at Colegio Esperanza and gives them a pep talk. (Interesting that they wear their high school uniforms and have the same faculty—the nuns and Diego.)
Pedro has fired up the burners on the stove. He seems even more depressed than before. José and Cesarín come to find out what’s going on with him. The work at the bank is waiting. It’s clear to them he hasn’t bathed or taken care of himself. He tells them to do the work by themselves. He doesn’t want to leave the house. He doesn’t want to forget what he’s lost. He wants to live with the pain of losing Amelia. He wants to be alone. They give up and leave. He forgets that he left the burners going and goes back to wallow in his inane obsession with a woman who did nothing but scorn and despise him.
Diego catches up with Lucero in the courtyard. (I feel compelled to report this encounter, because I’m sure there is more to come.) He’s surprised she’s lukewarm about school. She worked so hard, he tells her. She knows, but sometimes what is achieved is not what was thought or wanted after all. He gives her a little talk about finding what makes her happy and fighting for what she wants and not what will make her parents’ happy. Once she finds whatever it is, grab it and stick to it. Don’t let it go. He thinks he’s lecturing her on career goals, but there is some double entendre at work here. He doesn’t realize he’s talking about them when he says he thought she was happy with what she had in her life, but if that’s not so, it would be better to leave her alone so she can be happy. Luce asks, does that mean he doesn’t want to be her friend any longer? Diego says he thought she didn’t want to be his friend. Luce says no, she was only talking about the career she chose, not them. She’s glad he thinks of her that way and gives him a peck on the cheek and runs away. He’s startled and then a little smile crosses his face as he touches the spot on his cheek.
Old Fer hears the doorbell. No one is around to answer the door for him. He has to do it. He opens the door and there in a wheelchair is Amelia pushed in by Lupe. He smiles at her, but says nothing. (Lupe has gained new regard in my estimation for strength--wasn't there a long flight of stairs up to the hacienda front door?)
Pedro continues to pine over the unrequited love of his life. He blames himself. Meanwhile, Mariana is sloshing the contents of a 5 gal. container of gasoline all over the outside of the cottage Pedro is in. Her intention is to roast Pedro, Amelia and Fernanda alive. (I’m not sure why she didn’t check on their whereabouts first, but ni modo, we don’t want the story to end here.) Grim, but resolute, she strikes the match to start the conflagration.
Pedro takes no notice of the smoke. He’s still engrossed in making love to his little photo of Amelia. (I hope it burns up.) Mariana smiles now and bids farewell to the three of them. Finally Pedro takes notice of the smoke and the flames. He kicks out a window, but the flames drive him back. The class at school sees the smoke and the girls scatter, heading for the cottage.
Nana Rosario and Clarita have been shopping at the market. Rosario is struggling with her groceries but won't let Clarita help her at all, not with the marketing nor the cooking. She doesn't want Luis to see her. She's really scared of him. In mid-sentence, she collapses in the middle of the street. Clarita does the right thing and a little later the ambulance is taking her away.
Clarita is with her. Rosario doesn't think she has much time left. She feels life slipping away. She makes Clarita promise to take care of her niño, Carlos.
[Sorry--I left this out during transcription. We KNOW this is going to be important--to Carlos.]
"After all the attention Pedro has had from Marissa, he goes back to pining after that ungrateful, hateful Amelia"
All of a sudden after 19 years of humiliation it finally gets through Pedro's thick skull Amelia didn't love him? Come on Pedro no way it's really over keep begging.
And not to be outdone Marissa proved it. You can suffer the right amount of indignity and on the other side you get laid.
"He will cleave only unto her from now on until the hour of his death", "we turn away so as not to have to watch Marissa’s Waterloo", "She must be getting better. She’s not wearing her hospital headband and her hair is perky again" and "This is probably the first hug Pedro has received from a woman his age who is not his sister—ever" were excellent. All.
Let's continue on a festive, heart strewn path of hope. If only for a second. "For a moment he loses himself in Marissa’s arms". The beginning of a beautiful friendship. Can Marissa's caring and support ever erode the emotional devastation Amelia has done? I am hopeful. And Diego. "He’s startled and then a little smile crosses his face as he touches the spot on his cheek". I believe the man child was pleased. Part of his charm is that he has no genuine awareness of what a stone cold fox he is.
If Nana dies, Luis is clearly culpable. Of everything he has done, forcing this obviously ill woman to do his menial bidding was the worst atrocity. May God have mercy because I don't.
"Lupe and Ignacio supervise. They try to lift her spirits" and "He gave her his best, hoping for a little crumb of care in return, but all he got was pain and hate". What is the spell the evil enchantress has woven over these poor, deluded people? How are they going to break her hold. "Amelia says to herself Pedro and Fer are dead to her, just as she is one of the living dead". Lovely.
Gracias Anita. This was marvelous. I can't wait to see what happens tonight.
Diana
I suppose Pedro will blame himself for burning down the Loveless Shack since he left the burners on the stove on. And Mariana will be free to try again. I wonder where Pedro and Fer will live. Wherever they go, things are going to get interesting.
I had thought that Clarita might have a bigger role. I think we now know what it's going to be. She knows some other secrets, doesn't she? I think Luis has threatened her to keep quiet, but I don't remember what about.
I was surprised not to see Leopoldo confronting Luis in this episode. Maybe that will happen in front of Marissa or Carlos.
I guess we'll be rid of Felipe's troublemaking for a while. Hopefully he'll meet some nice young woman in Spain and just return in time for the finale.
Pedro got on my damn nerves. Every time they went back to his weeping and crying over that evil witch, I heard the smallest violin playing in the background, but I was so over this drawn out scene. How can you live without her?...easy!
Mariana is the worst murderer ever! She needs to give it up.
Will Old Fer embrace Amelia? or will the 'old' Old Fer be the one greeting her.
Lupe is crazy. She surely did depend on her to get her to her dad, but didn't she just say she didn't need her anymore.
Diana - I'm with you. What kind of voodoo is Amelia welding over all of these people that she can treat like crap and yet they kiss her feet? Is she selling it wholesale? Can I get it at Costco? Is it available online? I need that in my life!
Yes, me too! Too funny!
Diana
Pedro is just pitiful. Really writers and directors? stop it already. We see clearly that love has just blinded this man to
Any kind of sane thinking where this woman is concerned. Amelia could probably stab him with a knife and he'd find a way to blame himself for it. Thats how stupid blind he is. And he deserves so much better. Maybe the writers are going to surprise us, when he does get fed up he's going to blow all over Amelia. And I want a seat front and center. But it will be awhile. They haven't even had the trial yet, or is that even still on the table?
I saw tonight's episode but I'll talk about it tomorrow with everybody else. My hat off to you nitagirl. Thanks again.:-)
Nina, I totally agree! But I am a bit obsessed with the power Amelia wields not only Pedro but also mere strangers (Lupe, Ignacio), moths drawn to her evil, cold flame.
Diana
The whole school turns out, students and nuns, to help quench the flames of Pedro’s cottage. Fer hears her father’s voice. She knows Pedro is trapped inside and is beside herself. They have nothing at hand but dirt. They start throwing buckets of dirt on the fire, but it doesn’t do much. Fer crawls into the house to find Pedro. He doesn’t want to leave. She begs, telling him his destiny is with her. The firefighters arrive. Pedro won’t stir until something falling hits Fer and he picks her up and pushes her out into the arms of a firefighter, another one gets Pedro out. From a safe distance, they watch the firefighters douse the flames and see their house in ruins.
Rosaura is with Fer and Pedro as they assess their loss. Pedro says he’s lost his family, his life, his house, but they’ll come out ahead. Rosaura offers to house them at the school, but Pedro swears he’ll rebuild. Fer picks through the charred remains. Her father and her best friends watch sadly.
Rosaura asks Pedro out of earshot if he caused the fire on purpose. He says of course not. He’s been sad and depressed, he recognizes that, but he’s not a coward and would not take his own life. It was not a suicide attempt. Later, Fer asks Pedro the same question. No, he was inside, but he was distracted. He was in the bedroom. It’s just the two of them now, he says. He wants to be the father she deserves. Fer answers that he’s always been that—the best father in the world. Well, he replies, a dad like that wouldn’t take his own life, would he? Fer says he’s right. He claims he’s depressed but doesn’t know how to get out of it. Fer says she will help him.
At the hacienda, Amelia and Lupe have arrived to find Old Fer at the door. He looks at this woman in a wheelchair. He looks confused as Amelia tells him who she is asks her father to forgive her. She just needs his pardon to be able to continue living this way. Lupe looks on at the father and child reunion. Amelia pulls Old Fer down so he is close to her face. In his mind he sees his daughter as a happy little girl. This woman is a stranger.
Old Fer pulls back and smacks Amelia calling her an imposter. His daughter is young, beautiful, healthy, whole. Lupe gets in the act and accuses him of turning Amelia into a sad, bitter woman after his rejection of her. Old Fer turns on her as an accomplice, there to get money out of him. Amelia begs forgiveness. Her tears do not move him and he yells at them to leave his house. Lupe urges Amelia to leave. It’s clear to her this man wants nothing to do with Amelia. But it’s *her* father, says Amelia. Lupe tells Amelia this man is a stranger to her.
Amelia begs him for a place to stay. She has no place to go. Lupe tells her she can stay with her. Amelia tries one more time. Then the story that Old Fer wanted to reconcile was just a lie? If he had wanted to finish killing her, he reached his objective. They leave. As they cross the green, Mariana returns and sees Amelia. She’s pissed because she’s supposed to be dead. She runs up to her and wants to know what she’s doing there. Amelia says she came to see her father but he threw her out like a dog. Mariana says she’s supposed to be with the gardener. Lupe says obviously, she’s not. Amelia says that life is over. He and Fer will never forgive her for what she did.
Mariana says she will talk to her father, but for now she should go away, far away, go home. She can’t Pedro and Fer are dead to her. Well, she’s dead to her father, says Mariana and she can’t help her. Lupe sees the irony here. Amelia’s father and sister don’t want her. She doesn’t want Pedro and her daughter. Lupe doesn’t understand why Amelia wouldn’t rather be with people who love her. She thinks Amelia would be better off with Fer and Pedro, who love her unconditionally than with this family who treated her like an outcast for twenty years.
Mariana is coldly telling her to leave when Nana Blanca hears and sees what is going on. She runs to embrace Amelia. She is overjoyed to see her again. Blanca wants Amelia to stay. Mariana and Lupe want her to go. Blanca offers Amelia shelter, but away from the main house, while they wait for Old Fer to become lucid again. She shows Amelia the gardener’s shed, where Pedro lived. Amelia is offended. She’s an Altamirano, she has the same rights as Mariana and doesn’t deserve this dirty old shack. Blanca says it's temporary. She’ll send someone to clean it up. It hasn’t been used in 20 years. Lupe again tries to reason with Amelia. Here she’s nothing—a piece of furniture. With Pedro, she’s a queen. Amelia decides to stay. Lupe is rejected, again.
The ambulance is on its way to the hospital. Clarita is distressed. Rosario repeats Carlos’ name and tells Clarita to take care of him. At the hospital, Carlos is doing his rounds. He takes a break for coffee but tells his nurse, Graciela, he feels a pressure in his chest. Graciela wonders if it’s a premonition. He says he doesn’t believe in those things. He’s a man of science.
The ambulance arrives. Dr. Gomez is paged to Emergency. Dr. Macias says the woman who accompanied the patient was agitated and couldn’t tell them much, but asked for Carlos specifically by name. Carlos turns and sees it is his Nana. His emotions take over and he can barely treat her. She’s not responding. She flatlines. Dr. Macias makes him move away from her. He watches as the defibrillator is applied too late.
Carlos is inconsolable. He sheds tears of sorrow over her lifeless body. What is he going to do without her. She was his second mother. The staff leave Carlos with Rosario. He holds her hand, hands that held him with such love and affection his whole life. He asks her to forgive him for not being able to save her.
In the aftermath of the fire, Isabela has called her sister Carolina on the carpet for helping. She is actually blaming Caro for Pedro not dying in the fire. She tells Caro she should not have alerted her class to the fire or helped to put it out. Caro says she could see the house on fire and it would have been odd not to say anything or to stand by and do nothing while letting someone die. Isy doesn’t see that should have been a problem. She tells Caro that anyone who defends that no account brat is her enemy. Caro says don’t say that, but Isy is on a roll. She indicates that Fer, whose mother abandoned her, would have suffered more if she had also lost her father. And, the reason it didn’t happen is Carolina’s fault. Caro says she can’t be serious. Isy cackles into the phone. (Ok, Isy is certifiable in the DSM-IV-TR.) Isy thanks Caro for everything wrong in Isy’s life. Poor Caro.
Isy hangs up. It’s unclear what she is going to do next, but she gets a call from Marissa to tell her about a tragedy which will change Carlos’ life forever. It’s now more unclear than ever what Isy will do next.
Meanwhile, in the twilight of a painful day, Carlos has sought out Fernanda for comfort. He finds the house burned and partially standing, unlivable. He’s astounded. Fer is inside. Right away he asks about her and Pedro. She assures him they are alright and not to worry about them or the house. She senses something is wrong with Carlos. He begins to tell her about Nana Rosario. She died. He cries openly to her about his loss. She’s gone. He couldn’t save her. They hug each other.
Clarita is in Rosario’s room, choosing a dress for Rosario to be buried in. She’s mourning the loss of her godmother. She knows it was Luis making her work when she was so ill that provoked her death. She wants to tell Carlos how Luis mistreated her. This tender moment is interrupted by Luis who barges into the room. (Luis is always barging in, no matter where he goes.) He tells her not a word to Marissa or Carlos about his treatment of Rosario. He not only threatens to fire her, but to follow her wherever she goes and take his revenge on her. He pokes her forehead to make the point.
Fer and Carlos are still sitting amid the shadows of the night by the burned out cottage talking. Fer is reassuring Carlos it wasn’t his fault Nana Rosario is gone. It was out of his hands. It’s impossible to know why God decides, or when. Carlos says he asked God to save Fer when she was between life and death. Fer finishes, and here she is. Carlos says he also asked God to save his Nana. Fer adds, that’s not how it works. It was probably her time. She’s probably better off now. If she was suffering, why would Carlos want to keep her here? She’s at peace.
Carlos turns to Fer and tells her he needs her, now more than ever. He can’t live without her. Fer says she needs him, too, but she needs more time. That he is doing, he reminds her, but he needs her by him as a friend, or whatever she wants to call it. He doesn’t want to be alone right now. He asks her to come to the interment the next day. Fer says he didn’t need to ask. She’ll be there. He kisses her forehead and rests his head in the crook of her neck. Fer puts her arm around him and her hand strokes his face. Feeling secure for the first time since Rosario died, he closes his eyes.
The brief scene at the funeral just didn't seem to have a place in this narrative. I will cover the whole funeral in Friday's episode.
"He sheds tears of sorrow over her lifeless body". "He holds her hand, hands that held him with such love and affection his whole life. He asks her to forgive him for not being able to save her". How could we not be affected by Carlos' grief, portrayed in all too realistic a fashion? I love the actor and he is becoming a true galan in every sense of the word. After so many "galans" painted in shades of grey, there is no hint of malice or evil here, just kindess and love.
"He tells her not a word to Marissa or Carlos about his treatment of Rosario. He not only threatens to fire her, but to follow her wherever she goes and take his revenge on her". Thank you Luis for some of the most chilling moments of the evening.
“His daughter is young, beautiful, healthy, whole”. I honestly did fervently hope for old Fer’s redemption but he was revolting. I thought his heart had thawed but while a few icy chards may have fallen, it is still encased in bitterness. And of course, his behavior was totally absurd as his daughter looks exactly as she did when she left. Now, where is that beanie?
If I cared one whit about Amelia (which I don't) ,I would have hoped Nana Blanca would have intervened and told Old Fer he has lost his wits and there is no doubt she is his daughter. Let Amelia be crushed. Her 5 minutes of suffering could never match the pain she's inflicted on others their entire lives. (Proof positive Lupe is a far better person than I).
“Lupe tells her she can stay with her”. Ummm, really Lupe? You assuredly have a special place in heaven already reserved.
"She can’t Pedro and Fer are dead to her. She thinks Amelia would be better off with Fer and Pedro, who love her unconditionally than with this family who treated her like an outcast for twenty years". Lupe, we are with you. I can’t for the life of me understand it either. I must say we should all be so fortunate to have such a kind, caring friend such as yourself who has been shown nothing but ingratitude and uncaring. Sigh.
A side note. The actresses playing Lupe and Mariana have worked together many times in the past and have great onscreen chemistry.
I did feel sorry for Caro. Issy has completely gone over the edge.
I'm not looking forward to the funeral but am eagerly anticipating your recap of tonight Anita.
Thank you for relating the story in such a marvelous fashion.
Diana
Why is Marissa calling Isy? This chick lied about being pregnant to trap your son.
There really is no tolerance for that.
Of course, Isy hasn't changed. She is reprehensible.
As much as I can't stand Amelia, I'm glad Blanca showed up in time to put her in a shed. LOL!
I thought Carlos' breakdown over Rosario's death was kind of over the top. For a regular galan to display that emotion would be one thing, but Carlos is an M.D., and should be dealing with death on a daily basis, and be used to its inevitability as a normal part of life. Instead, it was the just-barely-out-of high school Fer who clues him in to these truths.
Isy is a special study in aberrant behavior. I missed that Marissa had called her, and like Kendra, I can't figure out why either Marissa or Carlos would ever have any kind of interaction with her for any reason.
By the look on Carolina's face, I think that she is going to become an ally of Fer's. She may be willing to bend a few rules of courtesy and comportment to assist her sister, but I think she is going to draw the line at being BSC like her sister.
So, we'll see how things unfold at the funeral. I am hoping that everyone looks at Isy and says "eww, what are you doing here?"
Thanks again, Anita.
David
Doctors do need to be strong for their patients. Professionally they need to walk a tight line between being empathetic yet stoic. But family is a different matter (IMHO). I am glad that Carlos has separated the two and can mourn the loss of a loved one so openly and sincerely.
Diana
They are both true galans, but while Carlos has the advantage of being well educated and smart, along with the other galan attributes, Pedro is kindly, thinks well of others, but is dumb when it comes to his interpersonal relationships.
Amelia has been his obsession, as he alluded to last night, ever since he was very young. His emotional quotient is in the high 90s, his physical quotient (if you get what I mean) has been ZERO. He might well have become an ascetic gardener in a cloistered monastery. He hasn't lived as a sexual being his whole life. He's missed a lot, I would say.
"He pokes her forehead to make the point" Errrr I want to take that finger and.....
I like Carlos, I think he's a sweet kid and hate his nanny died but damn, Fernanda almost lost her life rescuing her father, she's homeless, no clothes, no momentous, no nothing left. She was just discharged from hospital after a car wreck and her mother abandoned her with a knife twist. What about Fernanda? How much more can she take?
I missed the possibility for Caro to see Fer in a different light after what Isy said to her, but Big sisters (and she's probably got 6-10 years on Caro) wield a larger than normal influence, especially when Isy is a stand-in for their mother who is off in Spain or something and has a celebrity status in the world.
Caro won't have anyone to have her back except the other two Mean Girls, and if she somehow befriends Fer, those relationships will also be lost (no great loss). Fer, as a friend, will be steadfast and loyal. Look what Fer has suffered by trying to maintain her friendship with Camila.
I left out one line of dialog where Caro says to Isy that it's one thing to play pranks and make life intolerable for Fer (the violin and the baby iguana), it's another to deliberately let a person die.
Diana--I agree with your comment about the difference between being a doctor on call and a man losing a loved one. While I think David has a point, it went on for a very long time, I'm glad we saw that side of him--and also how open he was with Fer.
I think they should move into the school until Pedro gets his house rebuilt. It looked at the end there that they had put plastic up on the window frames. I hope they don't plan on living inside.
I have friends whose brand new house was destroyed by a faulty furnace in a fire. They had just moved in about a month earlier. Everything inside was destroyed. It's been TWO YEARS and they say it still smells like a cold fireplace inside. They lived in a hotel for months. Now they are renting a very small apartment for the five of them, just waiting for the restoration to be completed (and haggling with the insurance companies).
We aren't expected to believe Pedro is a virgin, are we? OK, his marriage was never consummated but before this what? He was in love with Amelia but he was supposed to be single. I will not buy he has never been with a woman in his entire life!
Tofie, I sort of thought that Carlos and Fernanda were comforting each other. I'd say Fernanda still has a lot going for her ... youth, beauty, talent, a scholarship, and at least three people who love her. But she's lost her mother, and even though her mother's basically a waste of air, Fernanda loves her.
Carlos, on the other hand, has lost a loving mother and confidante. The actor may have overplayed it a bit. He could have reflected internal pain without so many tears. But he brought a tear to my eye, and so far has been the only actor to touch me that way in this TN.
I know it's difficult to lose all of your possessions, but it can't compare to losing a person you love. When you live on the Florida coast like I do and you've seen the devastation of Hurricane Andrew, you realize that possessions may only be temporary and you don't attach so much importance to them.
LucyLu--I can believe he's a 40-year-old virgin. He's been obsessed with Amelia since he was very young. He himself said "since he was a boy" last night (although I don't think he was there that long ago). If he had Amelia on a pedestal for years before their marriage, I can see his never having been with a woman. There has never been any hint there was ever anyone else in his life, either, in his arguments/conversations/fights with Amelia, Marissa, Fernanda, Jose, Luis, Sister Rosaura--nobody.
Again, I like Carlos (Horacio Pancheri likeability is off the chart) and agree with all of you the character is cut from much better galan material than we usually get but Fernanda is totally selfless and repeatably begs for time to process what is happening in her young life. Carlos continues to impose and insist (gently) but Fernanda needs a breather, he should give her one. Carlos is being a bit selfish.
I'm sure there have been so many cold showers that he can't count them. hands tired. poor Pedro.
Thursday night was doleful. So much angst and deep sadness for our main characters. The only moment of true joy was when Don Fernando's housekeeper (Blanca?)ran up to Amelia to hug her and welcome her home. IMO, Amelia has done nothing to deserve such devotion, but since she can't get any nastier, maybe Amelia will have a redemption of some kind.

Pedro would probably, maybe kill luiy, but he gotta deal with that hairy thing. And she comes to the funeral dressed like a hooker. Really? I hope pedro is holding onto fers hand while that smelly thing is rubbing him up on the other side.
And the other bottom feeder whose the cause of nana's quick departure. Maybe she would have gone but not this soon if she hadn't been threatened by that male bitch bottom feeder. There could be a show down tonite at the buriel. Ok gotta go. More tomorrow. Thanks Anita.;-)
Fernanda, our poor dear sweet heroine. What more does this girl have to go through? She's had her mother insult, reject and pretty much tell her she's dead to her, she's been through a terrible accident, lost her home, and had to go through a fire (physically) how is she not traumatized? The girl needs to go someplace to just sit down and rest for a few days and have someone really take care of her. She's too busy caring for others, she doesn't know how to have someone truly see to her physical and mental well being. The girl has big shoulders.
Amelia is a horrible horrible woman and I don't give a rats ass about Ms. bitchy bangs or what she thinks she deserves in terms of lifestyle. At this point, I don't really care if Old Fer remembers who her worthless unfeeling behind is. She deserves to be miserable and alone. Who cares if she was run off by her father and left unwed and pregnant. Fernanda is not responsible for her stupid hormonal decisions long ago and it's time for bitchy bangs to stop blaming her daughter and treating Pedro like dirt.
As for Pedro, I need him to stiffen up his spine and start acting like a real man instead of some pathetic whining begging fool. It's not attractive and while I think he and Marissa would be great together, I can't wish him on Marissa until he really learns what a healthy relationship looks like. He's been abused so long he has no clue.
A bell tolls, the funeral procession makes its way toward the cemetery along a wide stone walkway. Carlos walks by himself behind the priest and the casket. Fer, dressed in blue jeans and a short navy blue knit top, head wrapped in a black shawl, joins Carlos from the side, carrying a plant. Luis, who is behind Carlos, walking with Marissa, sees her, starts to say something, but doesn’t. Isabela, dressed in a short black top, exposing her midriff and a weird, but probably fashionable short, tight black skirt with a slanting hemline, hurries to catch up. Fer leans in toward Carlos and says quietly that she’s here, as promised. He kisses her hand. Isy makes her way up to him and cheerily greets Carlos saying she got here to be with him, mi amor—in good times and there have been many, many, as well as bad times. She giggles loudly.
The priest begins the gravesite service. He intones words of comfort. The two people most affected are Carlos and Clarita. Fer is affected for Carlos. Cesar is affected for Clarita. He holds her tightly to him. Marissa is stoic in the face of Carlos’ loss—and hers.
Isy is not thinking of Rosario or the solemn occasion. She’s thinking of how she and Carlos will be together again some day--paralleling what the priest is saying about those who are separated unexpectedly. Carlos turns to Fernanda, takes her hand and pulls her closer to his side. Isy watches them as Carlos leans his head on Fer’s cheek. Luis starts to fall asleep on his feet, just like the horse’s ass he is. Marissa sees him and her disgust at such impropriety shows in her face. Luis wakes with a start to see Rosario standing in the crowd looking at him. He blinks and she’s gone, but he’s rattled. Clearly he’d rather be anywhere else than where he is.
Carlos is overcome with grief. Crying, he lowers himself into the grave, next to the casket and begs his nana not to go. He climbs out and into his mother’s arms.
After the interment, the little group walks away from the gravesite. Isy speaks to Carlos and Marissa, expressing her deepest condolences on their loss. Marissa thanks her. Isy keeps talking, that’s what families are for and they are family, right? She keeps calling Carlos mi amor and says how Nana will be hard to forget. Finally Fer says something—yes, the nana. Luis asks if Fer knew her. She replies only a little; she was a good person. The others walk on, leaving Fer, Carlos and Isy together.
Isy, trying to make Fer feel as uncomfortable as possible, declares how much better she knew Nana Rosario and how the nana adored her. Carlos looks at her. Adored her? Isy says of course and proceeds to tell the story of the two of them leaving on a trip and Nana followed them in a taxi because they’d forgotten their sandwiches. It was very funny. Fer speaks up and says to Isy that what is important here and now is Rosario and not whether Isy got anything to eat. Isy says it’s obvious Fer didn’t know Rosario, since she’s only recently come into Carlos’ life. Carlos steps in and puts Isy down, gently, but firmly. He says maybe Fer didn’t know Rosario very well, but Rosario knew him very well and that was enough to accept Fernanda as part of his life. With that he turns away from Isy, calls Fer mi amor and thanks her for being there with him. They give each other a long warm embrace as Isy watches.
Cesar and Clarita have a moment together. He doesn’t like the way Luis looks at her. Clarita asks him not to get involved. Luis is a bad man, a very bad man. No, he hasn’t done anything to her. Cesar is really Romeo at this moment. He tells her how much she means to him and though he hasn’t much to offer her, it’s enough for them to be happy. Will she marry him? Clarita accepts his proposal without hesitating. They seal it with a kiss.
Luis and Marissa are standing away from the other three. They seem to be getting along post-coitus. He says he loves her. Then he says oh, well, too bad about Rosario, but life must go on. Carlos is a man, he needs to buck up, it’s not like he lost his mother. Marissa reminds him Rosario *was* like a mother to him. She says she has to go to the bank for awhile, but they’ll get together to eat. Luis begins to daydream, oh, how Rosario could cook. He’s going to miss her cooking.
Pedro is sort of working at a job. José is now the third person that asks Pedro if the fire was set deliberately. Pedro takes umbrage at the insinuation. What does he think—his daughter just lost her mother, was she going to lose her father *and* her house? Of course not. José considers it and agrees, but he tells Pedro he needs to get it together and get back to who he was. Pedro says that’s not possible now.
Mariana makes a brief visit to the site of the fire. She hopes Pedro is in hell or wherever, she doesn’t care, as long as the bastard girl goes with him. She’ll find a way to deal with Amelia.
Nana Blanca is indulging Amelia with her kindly attention. Amelia seems content and is mellowing a bit under her ministrations. Blanca can’t believe that Amelia endured such pain and suffering living with Pedro and her daughter all those years. Blanca is sure Old Fer will soon be able to recognize her and she’ll again become the princess of the palace. Amelia is smiling and laughing a bit.
Camila is peeking out the dining room window wondering who is in the cabaña (which I called the gardener’s shed). Mariana immediately jumps all over her and roughly tells her it’s none of her business and to stay away from there. It’s off limits. Cam is surprised at her reaction, she was just asking. Mariana’s tone gets harsher and louder. Hernán finally steps in and tells them both to quit it. Cam says she started it. Mariana insults Camila about her looks and intelligence, but Hernán has had enough. She’s to show his daughter respect.
Mariana tells Hernán they have to figure out a way to get rid of Amelia before Old Fer remembers how much he loved Amelia and Mariana gets replaced. Hernán thinks they should get rid of Nana Blanca first. Then, after Mariana makes her life miserable, Amelia will leave on her own. He’s quite proud of his plan.
Old Fer is being cranky. Nana Blanca calls Carlos at this inopportune time to let him know that Old Fer is not doing well. His lost daughter came back to the house, but he didn’t recognize her.
Mariana and Nana Blanca argue over Old Fer and Amelia. What else is new? Old Fer has gone to the doctor’s. Blanca accuses Mariana of not wanting Old Fer to get better because Amelia will become the favored child again. And why not, Amelia was always the good child, she had a good heart, everybody who knew her liked her—not like Mariana whose heart is rotten. Nana Blanca warns Mariana, in jest, to keep her hubby away from Amelia or he might want to trade Mariana in for her.
Amelia does a little reflecting as she sits out of doors at the hacienda. Everything is as it should be. It’s better for everyone. She’s sure she’ll gain entrance to the big house when her father remembers her.
Mariana has gone to Luis’ office to have Old Fer declared incompetent so she can change some terms of the will so they favor her. Luis says it can’t be done. The document is legal. Mariana thinks there are other attorneys who could do the job. Luis thinks she’s crazy. His daughter has the right to inherit. Mariana sneers at his sudden role as loving, interested father. She spits out that he doesn’t care about her as a daughter. She’s a walking check to him. He starts to counter the argument, but she says Marissa would not like to know her own secretary is his mistress, he has a child and has been cheating on her for their whole lives together. Now, about the changes to the will, she says, after all, she has him by the short and curlies.
Fer becomes a busker to raise money to live on and rebuild the house. (I guess the violin didn’t burn up in the fire.) She’s very successful. She gives the money to Pedro. They’re a team. She’s cooking their meal over an open fire and they sit on upturned buckets. They have a tent pitched right on grass. (Really, Rosaura should be ashamed. The cottage belonged to the school. They’re homeless, but not jobless. What’s Pedro’s problem? Is he just too proud to accept any help?)
Fer is washing dishes in a pan when she gets an unexpected visitor. It’s Isy, still dressed in her funeral get-up. She’s come in peace and friendship and wants to make a donation to the cause. Fer tries to get rid of her. Isy tells her not to take offense, pointing out the misery they are living in. Fer says in order to be offended, she’d have to care what she was talking about.
They begin to argue about Carlos. Isy says just look around, look at her, dirty, ugly. Carlos isn’t the man for her. Fer says that is for the two of them to decide. Isy says, no, that was decided when Carlos was born—in a crib of gold and Fer in one of mud. It’s just a matter of time before Carlos realizes Isy’s the one who deserves him, understands him, is his equal. Equals, questions Fer. Isy lacks a great deal to be able to call herself Carlos’ equal. She finally runs Isy off.
Pedro wanders over to the quesadilla stand location. He’s looking for Amelia, or remembering the places she used to be in. Someone comes up to him and wonders where Doña Quecas is. They didn’t like how she treated them, but they miss her and her food stand. It was good food. (Now, as a reporter, I shouldn’t have an opinion, but I’m wondering why Fer and Pedro couldn’t live in the green box car. They store all their stuff in there and it has a table and chairs.)
Isabela and Marissa are talking in the hallway as Andrea approaches them and hears Isy say to Marissa, so, she’s reconciled with Luis? Marissa says yes, she thought about it and it wasn’t worth ending a long marriage over a fling with a floozy he met in a bar. Isy, now that she has Andrea’s attention, wonders if it wasn’t more than a fling. Wasn’t there a ring involved? A pricey one? (Isy lives to make others uncomfortable whenever she has an opportunity. It makes her feel important and powerful.) Yes, Marissa knows that, but Luis was truthful about the affair. It meant nothing to him. Now he’s sorry and has asked to be forgiven.
Isy says she’s surprised Marissa is willing to give him a pass on his infidelity. Not long ago, she reminds Marissa, she wanted to know everything about the woman he was cheating with and now she’s willing to dismiss it because he said it was with someone insignificant. Isy thinks it’s illogical. Marissa says this is the way it’s going to be. If she starts stressing out on the who, where and what she is like, it’s not healthy. She’d rather forget it all and keep the man she loves at her side. All this time, Andrea is watching the show, swallowing dozens of canaries until her eyes pop out. If looks could kill, Isy would be riddled with bullets. Andrea interrupts and asks for time off to go to the dentist.
Carlos has taken Old Fer for a consultation with a specialist in Alzheimer’s. He’s undergone some tests and they have to wait for the results before they can start a regimen of treatment.
Nana Blanca is still showering Amelia with love and attention. She’s fixed Amelia’s favorite dish. Amelia tells her Pedro and Fer tried to make it once, using cheap ingredients, of course. It wasn’t the same. She tastes Nana Blanca’s dish. She has no reaction, but it does bring back the memory of the time Pedro and Fer made it and she was enjoying it and their attention. But she tells Blanca it was a disaster and she’d rather not recall those days any longer.
Mariana comes out to talk to Amelia alone, but Blanca won’t leave her. Mariana gets mad. Then they hear Old Fer’s voice calling Blanca. Mariana shoves Amelia behind some bushes and the two go see what Old Fer wanted.
Fer has a surprise for Pedro. No, she doesn’t know where Amelia is. Fer says Amelia needs some space and they’ll give it to her. They walk off through the pasture. (I guess the surprise comes on Monday.)
Leo arrives to ask Andrea out to lunch. Since she’s gone, he suggests the two ladies accompany him. Isy begs off. Marissa says she’s on her way to Luis’ office so why don’t they get him and then go to lunch.
Andrea enters Luis’ office unannounced and calm on the outside. She’s seething on the inside. Then she lets loose. She was hoping never to see him again, but she had to, after what she had to listen to earlier. She repeats the litany of the attributes he used to describe her to Marissa. Luis is indignant. What else did she expect him to do. She expected him to say nothing. As it was, he denigrated her, reduced her to the level of a hooker. He yells at her that his marriage was nearly ruined because of that stupid ring. Ah, says Andrea, The Ring. Here it is. She wants nothing left from him. She throws the partially open box at him, but it lands on the floor. She states she could tell Marissa the ring was for her, Andrea, but she has some dignity left.
Andrea starts to leave just as Marissa and Leo walk in. They are surprised to see her there. Andrea explains she finished at the dentist early and she came by to consult Luis about getting some sort of restraining order to make her ex-boyfriend stay away from her. Marissa wants to know what he did to her. That good-for-nothing brute got violent and attacked her. Marissa says brutes like that should rot in jail, right Luis? Luis sort of nods but can’t look her in the eye. Leo has his eye on Luis. (I wonder if he’s wondering what we already know.)
Andrea is saying she wants to bring charges against her ex-boyfriend. Luis interjects that he was just telling her when they walked in he’s not a Family Law attorney, he deals with commercial issues. Marissa thinks he could still advise her. It’s a delicate matter. Luis agrees with Marissa, sort of. (It would be like sticking your bare hand inside a hive to see if there’s any honey. You know you’re going to get stung.)
Andrea isn’t in the mood for lunch. Marissa suggests they forget about lunch and tells Leo to take Andrea home. Marissa stays behind. She starts to say something about Andrea’s situation when she sees a ring box on the floor. She picks up the open box with the ring in it and asks Luis what is this ring doing here?
ANITA thank you for bringing us the complete roundup of Friday's action, the good, the bad, and the ugly hair. We know you are up late working hard on this so we can all enjoy it over the weekend. As always it is soooo much appreciated!
Yeah--what about this ring? Heeheehee, why am I enjoying Luis' discomfiture so much? He was squirming plenty as Andrea described her "boyfriend" to Marissa, right in front of him. And Luis' thought-bubble at the cemetery was the worst: who will cook my delicious meals now that Nana Rosario is dead? What a bum! I was almost glad to see Marianna threaten him with exposure in order to secure his help with the will. Got him "by the short and curlies", as you so aptly put it.
And Isy....wish Fernanda had thrown that bucket of water all over her mop-head.

It was so nice to be able to read your exceptional recap at a leisurely pace, rather than trying to read in bits and pieces at work.
"Now, about the changes to the will, she says, after all, she has him by the short and curlies" was my favorite line of many.
I asked the television incredulously if Luis was actually falling asleep at the burial service. Thank you for echoing my outrage in concurring that "Marissa sees him and her disgust at such impropriety shows in her face".
And J in Oregon, thank you for revealing Luis' gravesite thoughts. He is disgusting. And I agree, Mariana is just the one to help him on the road to ruin. Have at it, I say.
"José considers it and agrees, but he tells Pedro he needs to get it together and get back to who he was. Pedro says that’s not possible now". Pedro, you are exceptional and I care about you very much. But please, you must put Amelia out of your heart and your head. You have a life to live and a daughter who needs you. You must take charge and forge forward. Life is too short to lose another moment pining away over someone so undeserving.
"Blanca can’t believe that Amelia endured such pain and suffering living with Pedro and her daughter all those years". When I think Amelia can't get any more despicable, she proves me wrong again. She has poisoned Blanca against Pedro and Fer. Blanca, the only person on this planet who seemed to receive a kind and loving word from Amelia, is understandably fooled and believes these poisonous lies.
I am so gullible that when I saw "She has no reaction, but it does bring back the memory of the time Pedro and Fer made it and she was enjoying it and their attention", I thought ahhh, she is starting to regret how she treated them. "But she tells Blanca it was a disaster and she’d rather not recall those days any longer" totally burst my bubble.
I know Mariana and Hernan are evil but I'm still far too focused on Amelia to be concerned with them. Here Mariana tried to roast Pedro and Fer alive with not a moment's thought. I can understand her blind hatred for greed. But, her murderous rage seems strangely less horrific than Amelia's emotional and physical rejection of Pedro and Fernanda over the course of many years...
"What’s Pedro’s problem? Is he just too proud to accept any help?" Oh yes Anita, I am sure that is the answer! I am confident Rosaura has surely offered them refuge and more but was rebuffed by Pedro.
I'm growing impatient for Marissa to be the strong woman she is and kick Luis to the curb. Will the reappearance of the ring finally make her realize she is being made a fool of? The possibility of loving relationships with Pedro and Fernanda loom closely. Will she see them?
Sorry to ramble. There is so much here to ponder and debate.
Anita, you have made my day! Thank you.
Diana
I think this episode could be titled "Everyone Is Flying Under Melissa's Radar." So much information being thrown around and Marissa doesn't have the common thread to string it all together.
Isa really is being insufferable. I am surprised by her persistence, and I am surprised that Carlos doesn't turn to her in a very public setting and say, "What the hell do I have to do to make you understand that I don't ever want to see you again for any reason. Got out of here!!!"
I agree that the look on Leo's face implied that he was smelling a rat somewhere.
I don't think Luis will have too much trouble explaining the ring with some kind of an excuse or lie. He is so good at it and Marissa is so gullible.
I thought it was really funny when Marissa was trying to get Andrea to let Luis help her to nail the guy who gave her a black eye. I thought Luis swallowed more often than usual during that scene.
Thanks again, Anita. I'm still really enjoying this, and you are responsible for all of us enjoying it.
David
Amelia continues to disgust me, whine whine whine. She really fancies herself as being this woman who is supposed to be kept in some lap of luxury. The way she continues to put down Pedro/Fer just enrages me. I really hope Amelia suffers more. I know being paralyzed is already a suffering of sorts, but she's such a bitter bitch, that I can't feel any pity for her. She's a hateful hag. I really really need Blanca to have her eyes opened to who Amelia is now. The memory she has of this sweet girl is all crap. Amelia is a cold unfeeling woman who has mistreated a kind faithful husband and been horribly cruel to her daughter. I can't wait for Blanca to unleash on Amelia about her behavior. Amelia needs to have a true come to JESUS moment and Blanca is the perfect person to put this bitchy bangs in her rightful place.
I agree with you Diana, I can't seem to muster up the hatred for Mariana/Hernan that I have for Amelia.
Marissa is coming off desperate. I get being insecure about the age/looks but come on, how does this woman let Luis walk all over her and make a fool of her? I need her to open her eyes and see the truth. I'm getting annoyed at Carlos not speaking up and telling his mother what he saw in the office between Mariana/Luis. Surely that would help Marissa in kicking Luis out once and for all.
I thought Amelia was having a fond retrospective of her time with Pedro and Fernanda but I also noticed it was when both were serving her like a queen.
Luis has got this. He'll throw out a flimsy lie and she'll accept it, perhaps not believe it but will accept it. It was sickening when Marissa told Isabela and Andrea she doesn't want to know anything about the woman Luis cheated with and better to remain ignorant so she could stay.
I felt sorry for Fernanda during the wake. She carrying the flowering plant while Isabela had Carlos arm.
Oh, Luis has got this. Marissa wants to be lied to and it doesn't have to be a whopper.
Amelia reminisced about the times Pedro and Fernanda were serving her like a queen. If she misses anything it's the adoration and subjugation.
Was pitiful watching Fernanda carry a flowering plant as Isabela kept grabbing the arm of Carlos during the wake.
Diana, I agree with you, I can't muster up any true hate for Hernan or Mariana right now, because I'm too busy loathing bitchy bangs Amelia. She is a vile, hateful bitter woman and I can't wait for Blanca to find out the truth about how wonderful Pedro and Fernanda are and how they have been mistreated by Amelia and all for no reason. The vision that Blanca has of Amelia is not the vision they know. I hope once the truth is out that Blanca gives Amelia a true come to Jesus talk and puts Amelia's uppity ass in her rightful place.
Marissa is trying my patience. Get a backbone lady and stop being a doormat! Luis isn't even all that anyway.
I feel for Fernanda, the girl has lost so much, yet she manages to keep her sunny outlook. I just wish things could finally go her way for once. I'm tired of seeing her suffer and struggle all the time. I want her and Pedro to finally see some happiness and forget about Amelia. She's just not worth so much discussion and heartache.
I don't get the fascination everyone has with Amelia and why they all feel the need to worry, fret, and fuss to protect her. If I'd had my way she would be in a coma, so we wouldn't have to listen to her bitching and whining all the time about how rough she's had it.
I had two other thoughts on Fri's episode.
The first is that when Marissa and Luis were talking after the funeral about meeting later for lunch, it the background you could see Carlos sandwiched between Fer and Isy, trying to extricate himself from Isy's annoying presence. Cool camera work if they planned that.
The second was when Blanca prepared Amelia's "favorite dish" the look on Amelia's face after she took the first bite said to me "yuck, that's not how I remember this tasting." In contrast, in the flashback to when Fer and Pedro prepared that dish for her, she had a smile on her face. I wonder if this is going to be a learning experience for Amelia where she finds that the idealized life that she remembered didn't really exist, and the life she had for the last twenty years wasn't so bad after all.
