El Hotel de los Secretos #69, 5/4/16: The “Lady” Vanishes

Already drunk, after Andres finds out from Alfredo that Alfredo/Andres Jr. is really Diego Jr., and Belen has been playing him for a fool from the get go, he seeks Belen out and flies at her in a rage. Hearing her dissing both his mother and Natalia in the servants’ quarters adds fuel to the fire, and practically the whole staff has to pry his hands off Belen’s throat (good thing she has that big ruffled collar). Belen doesn’t back down, however. She starts insulting Andres’ manhood, saying he’s not capable of impregnating a woman. Andres flies at her again, and is intercepted by all the male staff. Belen turns her insults to Angela, which is the last straw for Natalia. She smacks Belen a good one, and the hair-pulling melee begins. Two of the waiters drag Belen away and out the back door, like the trash she is. The men, Lupe and Angela follow, but then leave Andres and Belen alone to sort through the ashes of their brief marriage.

Belen has the chutzpah to slap hulking Andres, who has just threatened to kill her, and looks like he means it. Belen claims that he would have continued being a mama’s boy and a servant if it weren’t for her.
B: I made you a man!
A: You made me a man?! The only thing you have done is destroy me, from outside and within. You lied to me! You used me!...I was the servant of the Alarcon, but you were the prostitute of Diego Montejo.

The truth hurts, and Belen doesn’t like hearing her truth. She slaps Andres again and tells him to shut up. The two run off into the night to continue their fight in the woods.

In Romulo’s old office, Diego is freaking out because he can’t find Isabel. Meanwhile, she’s on the other side of the bookcase, in the secret rooms with Julio, waiting until Diego and Dr. Vicario leave. Diego is complaining about how “they” are humiliating him, and about his wife who obviously doesn’t want to be with him—who lies as easily as she breathes. He flips a table and leaves. Doc Vic leaves shortly after Diego does, taking another look around the room, and seems to pocket the key as he exits. Isa asks herself out loud what the heck she’s doing. Julio is back in starry-eyed mode, and just wants her to promise that they will move forward in their plans to be together. She promises and they seal it with a kiss before leaving. Isa hands Julio the photo of Romulo and his Freemason buddies that they found.

Back in the woods near a stone aqueduct, there is much screaming, shoving and pushing between Belen and Andres. He calls her a social climbing gold-digger (trepadora y ambiciosa). She accepts it. She never wants to go back to being a poor, invisible loser.
B: I want to be “someone!” I want to be the wife of someone. The mother of someone. I don’t want to go back to being a servant. What’s so wrong with that? What’s wrong with looking for a bit of dignity?...I won’t go back to being anybody’s slave! And you? Who are you? You’re just a poor servant! A damned bastard!...

She starts slapping and beating on him again, and Andres pushes her off him.

At the hotel, Diego is headed down the front walkway, calling out Isa’s name. Doc Vic follows. Teresa stands on the balcony and observes them both.

The cantina’s become downright civilized since it’s come under female management. Violeta is busy refreshing the flowers in vases on the tables(!). Both the clients and working girls seem happy. In walks sour-faced Jacinto to ruin everyone’s evening. “What part of I don’t want to see you do you not understand?” Jacinto says he’s there to ask her a favor. She’s not doing a traitorous jerk like him any favors. He gets grabby and rough, and insults Violeta by declaring she would give him the time of day if he had the money. He gets even more rough with her, and makes to slap her, as he pulls out his money. The other patrons and girls start to protest, but it’s Melibea who jumps in to give the runt a smackdown and protect her daughter. The crowd runs Jacinto off. Violeta is shaken from the encounter, but more shocked by her mother finally doing something to deserve the title. Melibea hugs her tight and swears her care and protection from now on.

When Diego returns to the marital suite, Isabel is tucked in bed, seemingly asleep. She does her best to lie still and feign sleep, as Diego sits in a chair watching her, crying, and becoming more unhinged by the second.

The next morning, Andres wakes on the aqueduct. He’s got a wicked knot on the back of his head, and his hands and shirt are covered in blood. Belen is nowhere to be seen. He stumbles back to the hotel, where he barely listens to Angela scolding him for his brutish behavior the evening before, while trying to hide his bloody shirt. Angela seems to get a quick glance at the blood.

Near the stables, Jacinto grabs Isa by the hair, and drags her to the room where Ayala recently interrogated him. He tells her he’s known about her and Julio for a LONG time, and has kept his mouth shut to Diego. If she wants him to remain silent, then she needs to do something for him. She has to go into Diego’s safe and bring him the gold cufflink she finds there.

Upstairs, Julio begs Ceci to open her door. She refuses, all the while covering up her bruises with makeup. Julio enters her room with the skeleton key. He apologizes for hurting her, but points out he has always been honest with her. He loves Isabel, although he’s tried not to. He asks for Ceci’s help with something. Ceci angrily points out that it’s always all about HIM, and wonders why he prefers a porcelain doll over a real woman. She refuses to look at the picture of Romulo and his Masonic Lodge buddies (including her friend Mimi Peralta’s hubby) that Julio brought for her to examine. Instead, she shoves the ledger book of all he owes her at him, and shoves him out the door. The picture falls to the floor. Later, as Ceci is complaining to her “nieces” about Julio, one of them spots the photo and recognizes Mr. Mimi. Ceci tells the nieces they are leaving to go visit Mimi. She denies she is doing this to help Julio, but is instead trying to hasten the fall of Diego Montejo.

Julio speaks to Ayala and Dagoberto on the down-low on the front lawn. Ayala informs him that the flask of cough syrup he found in Ben’s room was laced with arsenic. But Ayala doesn’t think it was meant for Romulo. He didn’t have the kind of illness before he died that would have required that medicine. He gives the bottle back to Julio to investigate further. Ayala and Dago are going to keeping digging into the disappearance of Garrido.

Andres cries and asks himself what he did, as he stuffs the bloody shirt into the armoire in his suite. Olegario, with his son, starts banging on Andres’ door, to get A&B to come down to breakfast with them. They eventually give up, assuming that the lovebirds might actually be doing some loving.

In the Vergara ex-marital suite, Teresa slaps Sofia so hard that even the baby starts crying.

She’s got the bloody knife that Sofia used to kill Beatriz, which was acquired in exchange for doing business with Diego once more. Teresa holds the knife up to Sofia and demands to know why she did it. Sofia claims she was just defending herself, plus Bea tried to steal what was hers. She collapses onto the chair, a blubbering mess. She begs Teresa for help. “How do you think I can help you, Sofia? You’ve just sunk us!” Teresa points out that with this, Sofia’s screwed them and handed Diego absolute power over them and the hotel.

T: Why do I have to pay for the bad behavior (desgobierno) of this family? Why do I have to pay the price for your mistakes (sus platos rotos)? Why was I punished with your father’s disloyalty, and continue to be punished with that of you three? All of you, slaves to passion, to lust…to lust! Why didn’t you (three) die in my womb before being born? Why didn’t I kill you in your cribs, before you could turn my life into this hell?  Tell me why, Sofia. (Uhm…so, is Teresa telling us and Sofia that she doesn’t want a Mother’s Day card this weekend? OK then…)

Julio has found a dusty crate full of the cough syrup in the storage room. He asks Angela about it and she’s surprised Ben never got rid of them. They were ordered a few years back, when Teresa got sick and had respiratory issues. She was in bed for more than a week. Julio takes the crate to his room, and finds Andres crying on the floor. Andres is sure he killed Belen. Julio is sure he didn’t. Andres can’t remember anything. Julio promises to help him search for Belen, and he’s sure they’ll find her (alive).

Isa interrupts, and Julio follows her to the tree-lined area of the lawn. She tells him about Jacinto’s threats. Julio wants to go immediately teach the brat a lesson, or at least tell Ayala. Isa doesn’t want to complicate things more. Julio shows her the latest complication-- the flask of poisoned cough syrup that was intended for her mother. Isa is shocked that in addition to her daddy being murdered, someone tried to murder her mama!

Ayala questions Diego about Garrido and surmises that Garrido and Belen had a thing going on, since they disappeared from the hotel the same night. Diego can barely contain his laughter at the thought, and points out that Belen has returned, and as a “lady” no less. Plus, he doesn’t know where and how his employees get their itches scratched (desenfogar su calentura/cool their heat/satisfy their horniness). As he leaves, Ayala points out that some fancy tchotchke on Diego’s desk is actually a fake, “Like everything in this hotel.”

Señor de la Garza, husband of Gema, Felipe’s new conquest, loudly tells the front desk that he will be out ALL day, and then he and his wife are leaving for Mexico City. He does this within Felipe’s earshot. Felipe takes the bait, goes to Gema’s room, and seduces her right onto the bed. Things are getting pretty hot and heavy, and Gema is more than willing to toss her vows out the window, when all of a sudden her lovely countenance turns into a shirtless Jorge/NotAManuela. Felipe freaks and runs away and out the window, just as jealous hubby arrives through the door, with gun ready. He sees the open window and curtains billowing in the breeze, and follows.

At Mimi’s home, Ceci is questioning Lauro, aka Mr. Mimi, about the picture of him and the other freemasons. Lauro explains that he left the order right after that picture was taken six years ago, and is bound by a code of silence. Ceci assures him he would be helping to solve Romulo’s murder if he tells her what he knows. He’s shocked to hear it was murder, but not surprised.  That particular lodge was all high rollers—men of wealth, influence and power, the guys who control the country, and Romulo was their leader. Lauro was nothing more than the husband of a famous actress—not important enough. At that time, they were starting to impose strict rules on all the Masons and even put spies in the other lodges. Led by Romulo, they started to clean house, and those who didn’t toe the line were even threatened with death! Among those threatened was Olegario Alarcon. Many had to flee the country.

Julio shoves Jacinto up against the wall and threatens to kill the brat if he doesn’t leave Isa alone. Jacinto is saved by Diego yelling for him. Diego wants to know if Jacinto said anything to Ayala that caused him to question him about Garrido. He also threatens to kill Jacinto if he doesn’t keep his mouth shut about Garrido. Julio hears all, but has no time to do anything with this info, as Andres begs him to accompany him into the woods to search for Belen. All they find is her bloody shirt, which further convinces Andres that he murdered her.

Ayala is just about to knock on Andres’ and Belen’s door when Oleg shows up and tells him he’s wasting his time. He doesn’t know where his nephew is, but Belen has been missing since yesterday evening.

Diego catches Isa just as she’s breaking into his safe. She tells him she was going to put something important in the safe. No, she doesn’t have it with her- she left it in the room. Diego practically breaks her arm as he demands to know if she thinks he’s stupid. He drags her to their room to show him what this “important” object is. She shows him the flask of cough syrup, and catches the flicker of recognition in his eyes. She demands the truth from him. He sits and arrogantly says he’ll tell her the truth. We go into a series of flashbacks, as Diego tells his tale. (It’s up to the audience to decide just how much of it we think is the truth. I’m going with 85%.)

Flashbacks/Diego’s truth:
Diego tells Isa that Romulo was the one who mixed the cough syrup with arsenic to get rid of his wife. In flashback, Diego listens in at the door as Romulo and Teresa argue about his decision to leave the hotel to Andres. It’s HIS hotel and his decision, and Andres is his first-born. He sure as heck isn’t going to leave the hotel in the hands of drunk, irresponsible Felipe, off-her-rocker Sofia, or Isabel the dreamer. Teresa wants to know what about her, and reminds him that her dowry helped him grow the hotel. Romulo counters that her family bought the Alarcon high status name with that money, and Teresa knows it. It was a done deal! (negocio cerrado) Teresa can’t believe that’s all she is to him—a business deal. “Did you ever feel love for me?” Romulo continues to insist on legally recognizing Andres, giving him his name, and leaving him the hotel. Teresa can’t believe he’ll just leave her and his kids out in the cold like that. Romulo says they don’t feel like his kids, because they don’t act as he would expect his kids to act, especially Felipe.

Sometime later, Teresa comes to see a very innocent looking Diego (yeah right) and tells him she read her husband’s will, and he left Diego, his supposed favorite, out. What’s he going to do about it? (Flashback Diego continues to look unassuming.) She asks Diego to find out the legal means for her to take charge of the marital assets. She wants to “protect” herself and her kids in case it becomes necessary. Diego tells Isa that Teresa had a solid legal case. Romulo was an adulterer and a liar, who had sunk the hotel into debts. Teresa began the process of taking power of attorney over Romulo by proving him unfit to make decisions. Romulo somehow found out about it, and decided to kill her. His opportunity came during a cold spell that caused Teresa to get sick. In flashback, Diego sees Romulo change the cough medicine on Teresa’s night stand for the poisoned bottle. Isabela can’t believe it. “Honey, absolutely ALL marriages have their problems. Right, my love? Right?!” Diego’s tender stroking of Isa’s tear-stained cheeks, suddenly turns into a menacing face grab.

In the wooded area of the lawn, Felipe is still getting dressed, and smiling from his narrow escape. Suddenly, Don Eusebio de la Garza calls out his name, and points his gun at him. Felipe wants to talk it out. Eusebio doesn’t. He shoots Felipe square in the chest. Felipe falls to the ground bleeding.

Comments:
If someone murdered Belen, my money's on Alfredo. Where was he this episode? If someone helped Belen disappear and/or killed her, my money's on Oleg. Why was he so insistent on pointing out that Belen was nowhere to be found?

The bullet that was meant for Felipe long ago for his shenanigans, finally reached its target. Maybe Jorge will ride up and save his worthless life.

Well after 50,000 times having a gun pointed at him, Felipe finally got shot. I was hoping he would get caught. As much as I like him, he was beginning to irritate me. I kind of hope he dies. If he decided to go to Jorge, he would eventually be the cause of her downfall. And Jorge certainly doesn't deserve that.

What is the shame about Felipe is that he had plenty of chances to redeem himself and he blew every one.

Thank you, Vivi, for your outstanding recap.

It was refreshing seeing Melibea come to Violeta's defense from creepy Jacinto,

Vivi: Diego as "innocent". That would be the day.

Isabel had quite the scary episode being manhandled by both Jacinto and Diego. It is not looking good for her in light of her careless disappearances from Diego's watchful eye. Her personal safety should trump solving the mystery. She is not smart.

Wow, Felipe just cannot get Jorge/Manuela out of his head. Nanette, I share your ambivalence about Felipe. I would love to see him with Jorge/Manuela but only as long as he brings her no harm.

Fabulous recap Vivi!! Almost splurted out the coffee with " Teresa telling us and Sofia that she doesn’t want a Mother’s Day card this weekend? OK then…"

I admit, have a bit of a soft spot for screw up Felipe. Lord knows he's done far less than many of these idiots. If I wished anyone was on the end of that shot, it would be Jacinto. Good lord, someone hit that kid with a plank or boulder or something. I don't care if he winds up doing something to take Diego down, he's still anvil-worthy.

I'm apt to agree that Diego is giving HIS version of things. Who knows...Deigo could have tried to poison both Teresa and Rom. We are seeing he's nuts enough. But I'm more apt to think the poison was used on Rom after all... if Teresa didn't know about it, then how about Diego? Cristina took care of Rom at the time...and she was doing it with Diego? Connection?

Honestly, are Isa, Felipe and Sophia even Rom's kids. That tidbit Diego spouted how Rom claimed none acted like his kids makes me wonder now. Is that Teresa's big secret?

And I don't think Andres killed Belen. The knock on the head tells me that and that he doesn't remember anything. He wasn't drunk, he would have remembered. He's being set up. Ole?? The Doctor?? They made a big enough scene, so anyone could have followed them. Sort of sorry seeing Andres constantly being the sacrificial lamb in this story.

HATE crying babies in scenes, fake or not. Grrrr. And not ounce of sympathy at this point for Teresa or Sophia. Everyone was a means to an end for her. But we did learn she was the rich girl who brought the money, not a Belen who worked her way up.

Sooo funny. Have to rush off to work and don't even have time to finish recap (will later) but that was just so delicious, I had to note it. Thanks Vivi...you put a lot of pizzazz into this recap from what I've read so far. Am sure the rest will be great also.

Really, really good Vivi and love your observations.

"The cantina’s become downright civilized since it’s come under female management"

"Teresa slaps Sofia so hard that even the baby starts crying"

"I’m going with 85%"

None of Romulo's kids are worthy. Andres the black out drunk, "irresponsible Felipe, off-her-rocker Sofia, or Isabel the dreamer"

I believe the part about Romulo. He is not a good guy. I agree Cristina could have killed him.

I don't think Andres killed Belen in a drunken rage and think it is either Diego or Oleg if in fact she is dead. Belen has more lives than a cat.

For Felipe it is entertainment for many of the women he seduces catastrophic. There is a very long list of destroyed lives, some resulting in death, that trumps even Ben. There is nothing redeemable in this snake. I wished the bullet hit his forehead.

Gracias, Vivi. I just caught up to this episode and had playback issues.

The misogyny of this era and possibly of these writers was really burning my tail this time. That is such a horrific pairing with such a toxic mother as Teresa talking to Sofia that way. No wonder she seemed saner when she came back from that fake facility. She needed to be away from Teresa.

There was a parenting manual written in the 18th century cautioning parents not to love their children too much due to the likelihood of their early death. Just found this:

L. Emmett Holt, in “The Care and Feeding of Children” published in 1894, wrote, “ Babies under six months old should never be played with; and the less of it at any time the better for the infant.” This is a sure way of raising children who will suffer from Attachment Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder.

John B. Watson in “Psychological Care of Infant and Child” published in 1928, wrote, “Never hug and kiss them, never let them sit in your lap. If you must, kiss them once on the forehead when they say good night. Shake hands with them in the morning. Give them a pat on the head if they have made an extraordinary good job of a difficult task.”

If you want your child to be healthy just do exactly the opposite of what Watson recommends.

Teresa must have followed a lot of this crazy stuff when her children were small.

As to how much I believe of Diego's story? Less than 85%. I also think that Diego was fleecing the Alarcons long before Romulo's death.

Death is too big a Karmageddon for Felipe no matter how annoyed we are with him. Not sure whether Belen deserves to die but she deserves some payback for how she treats others.

Well, things aren't percolating yet over on Camino, so wandered over here, and kaPOW! I'm treated to a recap by Vivi!! Thank you so much for your insight, snark and hard work.

I wish Jacinto would get an ingrown toenail that turns into septicemia and kills him slowly.

I think that Diego will spin a web of lies and destruction in which he will become fatally enmeshed. I hope the catalyst for this will be . . .Hell, I don't care, I just want to see him go down.

The cantina has indeed become a very civilized place - you could take a new girlfriend there on your first date.

'This is a fake, just like everything else in this hotel' :)

I don't know what to think about Belen. Getting rid of her is like trying to sink a cork.

Thanks again, Vivi. Always enjoy your work.

David

Thanks for the recap Vivi!

What an episode! And the avance for tonight looked crazy!

I'm getting a Gone Girl vibe from Belen's disappearance. Andres was obviously set up, but was it just Belen or is she working with someone (maybe Olegario)??

I don't believe she's dead, and I hope Felipe's not dead either. I kinda like him even though his character hasn't grown at all.

I'm still trying to figure out why Ignacio is around. He hasn't had much to do except complain to Mathilde about her not wanting to be with him.

I really hope Jacinto helps bring Diego down. Why does he only want one cufflink and not both? Is it the cufflink that he found in the car's tire after Garrido's disappearance? He sure looked disgusted when Diego walked away and then spit in his direction.

Only eleven more episodes! I don't want this TN to end!!

Nanette- I would like to believe that getting shot in the chest will finally change Felipe. But if driving one sister to madness and another to suicide, in addition to all the other women’s lives he’s destroyed along the way, wasn’t enough to change him, I’m not sure if near death is. I find his scenes with Jorge delightful, but like you, I think he would ultimately cause her downfall too.

Jarifa- From the previews, it looks like Isa’s luck with Diego has finally run out. I am dreading watching that. She has been tempting fate/the devil for a while now.

Daisynjay- It’s like the writers have been hearing our thoughts, and I cheered when Melibea broke that chair over Jacinto’s hard head. That kid is ticking people off left and right, and it’s a surprise he’s not dead yet. I also felt no sympathy for Teresa or Sofia in that scene. But I felt for that poor baby if he’s stuck with these two for the rest of his life. Andres and Alfredo need to take the tyke and do the Two Men and a Baby thing.

We learned Teresa came from a “new money” family, who made their money from their work trade. And at the time the Alarcons were low on cash, but had land, a fancy hotel, their fancy name and connections. That was a typical matchup of the time, and I’m sure the parents on both sides didn’t care if Teresa and Romulo loved each other. That wasn’t the point. Both sides were getting something. I’m surpised Teresa would have been naïve enough question Romulo about this.

Judy- Thanks for the lovely compliment. Hope you come back later once you’re done working. Love to get your thoughts on some of last night’s developments.

Tofie- Very true. Diego or Doc Vic should be added to the list of those who could have harmed or helped Belen do her disappearing act. My guess is that Belen is still alive (the writers wouldn’t deprive us of her death), and will work with someone (Oleg) to try to blackmail Andres. To be fair, the drink didn’t cause him to black out. The conk to the back of his head did.

Urban- Thanks for the info on how folks used to think babies/kids should be treated. Yet another way that the “good old days” are proven to be just the opposite. Thank God for today, I say! I see you’re even more skeptical than I am about just how much of Diego’s tale was truth vs. fiction/exaggeration/lies. I have no doubt it’s mostly truth. But when have we even seen Diego react so serenely to being informed that he’s been left out of the division of the spoils? Yeah, right!

David- So glad you dropped in! Oh yeah, I cannot wait to see Diego get his delivery of anvils. Let’s hope they come express mail.

J- Oh, yeah. Definitely got the Gone Girl vibe from the way Belen disappeared. I believe as you do that she’s setting Andres up. Either to get back at him, or to extort money out of him (or both). As for the cufflink, yes, it’s the one Jacinto found the night after Garrido was murdered. I believe the other one is in Garrido’s (and the baby’s) grave. It would be damning evidence.

Thanks, Vivi! The only thing better than watching a great episode is reliving it over and over again in a detailed recap.

Now now... it wasn't fair for Andres to call Belen a prostitute. As far as I can tell, she was doing it with Diego for free!

I am stunned but pleased with Melibea 2.0. I don't know how realistic it is, but it's nice. If only all horrible mothers could be rehabilitated so easily.

Speaking of terrible mothers, when is someone gonna slap Teresa?

I don't find it terribly hard to believe that Romulo might have tried to poison Teresa, but it wouldn't rule out the possibility that it was someone else. (She does have a way with people, after all.) I don't buy much of the rest of Diego's story. In his narrative, Teresa didn't seem very Teresa-like to me when she was pleading with Romulo and whining that he didn't love her. I'm also skeptical that he said anything negative about Isabel because that's not the impression we were given of their relationship - but it would certainly suit Diego to tell the story that way.

I don't know where the Felipe story is going. I assume this isn't going to kill him, because that would leave the Jorge story unresolved, and I don't think it's over yet. However, if Felipe does end up with Manuela, I'm not too worried about her. I don't think she'd put up with the kind of behavior that he tried with Mercedes and Eugenia. I think Felipe would actually exert himself to be worthy of Manuela and keep her happy.

I am also betting on Oleg being responsible for Belen's death, if she's dead. She's no longer useful to him.

I have also been wondering why Ignacio is in this story, other than perhaps to sell us on Matilde's relationship with Ayala (and I was already sold before he showed up). Unless he had a fling with Belen when she was being "ladyfied" - that could pull her story in an interesting direction.

Julie- Thanks, amiga. ITA. In Diego's flashback, not only was he not acting very Diego-like, but Teresa wasn't acting very Teresa-like. I too can't see Teresa whining about Rom not loving her at that late stage in their marriage.

Vivi, there were no good old days. But that's a topic unto itself.

I'm not believing anything Diego says anymore. Romulo may have not been entirely what he represented himself to be but I don't think Isabel's memories of him are false. He knew that she was the most worthy of Teresa's children and he loved her.

Belen could be gone forever and I think Oleg intends to frame Andres. After all that happened downstairs there will be lots of suspicion cast on the poor, naive young man.

If I had been foolish enough to remain with a man that disrespected me daily by slipping out to be with his live in squeeze, then tell me neither I nor my children would receive anything for remaining at his side as he spent my dowry and unilaterally decide all would go to the illegitimate son of his live in lover, I'd poison him.

I do think Ole is fed up with Belen and think he can get what he needs without her now. With her story out to anyone within earshot of that argument, her credibility is toast and she serves no purpose. if he can get Andres arrested, then any inheritance might be something he can negotiate away from Andres since he'd be locked away for life. It also keep the baby in the care of Alfredo and a better means to get the lands sold over to him if Alfie wants cash and to move away.

But I'll be honest, until I see a body, I won't be convinced she's gone. David I so love your comment: "Getting rid of her is like trying to sink a cork." Perfect!! But since clueless, gullible but adorable Andres is painted a hero so far, I imagine Belen, even if alive, getting NADA at end game.

Daisynjay

LOL, Tofie! Teresa had more than enough motive.

85% honesty seems awfully generous for Diego. You're an optimist!

Very disappointed in Belen. I never hated her the way some do and thought she actually did love the babies, but she's gone too far. I could understand her desperation to get ahead. If I were under the thumbs of Los Alarcon, I'd be a bit bitchy too and would do what I could to get out of it. but she could have done so much more! She and Andres could have run the hotel and created a better work environment for los servientes (at least until the war starts), but no. She had to turn into one of the Alarcons. Her inability to be civil and ruin her chance at success was especially clear with the cantina scene. Meli was in a similar position, being held down and controlled by that syphilitic jerk, but once free from him and given a chance, she's actually made good! The cantina looks nice and she's turning into a decent human being. Good on you, Meli! Belen should be so lucky to be able to work there (if the telenovela gods haven't killed her already).

So about that hotel. Shouldn't it belong to Andres now? He's the primogenito so wouldn't he be the heir to it? Which means that whatever deal Teresa made with Diego to run it is moot because she had no right to make that decision. I really want Andres to step up, quit whining about his bad taste in women, and take over the hotel. He can start by firing Jacinto. Lupe will understand.

Kelly

Kelly- LOL! Maybe I am being optimistic about Diego's "truthiness" (shout out to the Colbert Report). But we have learned of late that Romulo was no angel.

As for Andres, he wants to keep himself separate from the inheritance and running the hotel, and he had been deluding himself with the dream that he and Belen were going to take their baby, leave the hotel, and go live simple lives elsewhere, happily ever after. He's only now realizing that it was never going to happen and the dream is dead. But now I think he's going to be too preoccupied being eaten up with guilt about "killing" Belen to focus on the hotel.

I think people forget that Belen aside from being a terrible person who has done nothing but manipulate Andres and take advantage of his kindness (and stupidity), also gave Violeta that tea so she would lose her baby. She's one of the characters I hate the most in this show.

Anon 3:59- Oh, I have not forgotten how Belen fed Violeta that tea to make her miscarry and nearly killed her, with absolutely NO remorse. She deserves a very heavy anvil.

Vivi: Thanks for the wonderful recap.

I believe that Melibea treated Violeta badly before because she was afraid of Genaro.

Julie: my fear is that Felipe, in his bumbling, drunken, incompetent way, will put Jorge in danger. There's no doubt he loves her.

Also, Belen was definitely becoming a thorn in Oleg's side.

From the previous ep: was cool to see the guy (archbishop) who played the doctor who "treated" Liliana ("Sofia") in MEPS--in the manicomio that fronts as a hotel now.

Nanette- I too couldn't help but smile when Dr. Matasanos and "Lili" were back together, if only briefly. I wonder if the two actors had a good laugh about it. Only thing better would have been Ciro also popping up, as a monk or something.

Thank you for such a detailed recap, Vivi. Sometimes I forget to thank all of you recappers, but let it be known that I appreciate all of you. I do appreciate ALL the commenters too. It sure makes this a lot more exciting.

As far as Belen, I don’t think she is dead since there should have been a body nearby where Andres woke up. The only time I liked Belen was when she had the babies and she appeared to want to be a good mother. I also felt sorry for her when Andres was injured as she seemed to actually be distraught over his life threatening injury. I also felt sorry for her when baby #1 was killed and they took her baby #2 and she had to go bury baby #1. As Angela had said, “no one should ever have to be put through that” or something to that effect. When Belen returned all gussied up looking like she struck it rich, I began to hate her again. I hate the way she treats the help when she herself was one of them. You would think that because she knows what it’s like to be a hotel maid that a person like that would be kinder and not behave like a mean and nasty dictator. I hate her selfish ways and how she treats people. Also what she did to Violeta! Unforgivable!

LOL….someone said in one of the comments that Belen really wasn’t Diego’s prostitute because she did it for free! It’s her fault for making herself so cheap.

I don’t believe a word of what Diego says. He’s Satan the Devil in disguise. Well I guess it isn’t much of a disguise now, is it?

I do hope that Andres stops drinking so much and becomes responsible and someone to look up to. He really does deserve to have more because he really was a fine young man. Let’s hope he returns to the responsible young man he always was.

Thanks, Cynthia! I also love seeing your comments.

The babies, and that whole rotten situation, were the only times I felt for Belen. Even when Andres was unconscious, none of her concern was for him. It was for herself and her lousy situation-- forced to be wet nurse to her own child, and no money from the Alarcon or Diego. She was just sad that Andres' accident happened before they got married and she could become lady of the manor. Had he gotten kicked by that horse on their way back from the civil marriage, she would have not cared one bit. Of that I am certain.

Too funny Vivi, great stuff

Of course the books on raising children were written by men. Two bitter men that had no love as children & want everyone else to be as miserable as they are.

I don't want F&*k up Felipe to die either, I want Jorge to straighten him out. He does need a smack down for all the harm he has caused, he just got it!

Andres, I'm sure did not kill Belen, but where did he get all the blood? Isn't she sort of Important to Olegorio's plot, but it could be by framing Andres for her death. Sheesh, this TN gives me a headache.

Nanette
The doc in MEPS was Ricardo Silva as Dr. Plutarco Obregon. I haven't seen him in anything since, are you sure that's him as the archbishop, I didn't think I would ever forget Plutarco's voice. I thought Silva was great.

Variopinta- I'm sure whoever knocked Andres unconscious dabbed that blood on him to make him think he murdered Belen.

At this point, now that Andres can't stand her, Belen is useless to Oleg as a tool to manipulate Andres. At least not as a tool to manipulate him through love. Manipulating him by making him think he killed her...now, that's another story.

Oh one other thing. Someone had mentioned why Teresa stayed with Romulo when he was such a cheater. Well back then there was no way for a wife to really leave her husband in a dignified way without a scandal. A wife just stayed until one of them died. My great great aunt Petra was married to an American man in the late 1800s who was Congressman Hiram Stevens. He was a drinker and a philanderer and not such a good man at all. But they were on the up and up of Arizona society (This was before Arizona was a state) with lavish parties and important people. They were quite wealthy, but my aunt did not leave him. Things got so bad that he tried a murder suicide and missed shooting her but ended up killing himself only. The story is here if you would like to read it. He even had a mistress and a child from the mistress.

I think the reason I’m enjoying this novella so much is because junk like this happened in my own family ancestry!

Cynthia so tragic yet so interesting this piece of history. Wow.

Vivi: it would have been wonderful if "Ciro" showed up.

Back in the day when there was a divorce, even if the man was at fault, the wife was ostracized and her children taken from her. The children taken from her part wouldn't phase T, but the ostracizing certainly would.

An one see the actor who plays Lupe here in Yago? First time I've ever seen him play a not nice person (the only other TN I've seen him in was Robo).

Variopinta: I'm almost positive that was the same actor, but I'm going to do a little research.

Variopinta: he was also in Amores Con Trama.

So far haven't confirmed him for Hotel.

Cynthia, what an interesting piece of history & your family. Thank your for sharing.

Nanette, Vivi mentioned Dr Matasanos, I assume she is referring to MEPS, but I don't remember that character.

Nanette, Just checked the cast list for Amores con trama, sure nuf Ricardo Silva is listed. I quit that one early.
I guess I really will have to get Hulu to watch this episode again. Can't believe I didn't recognize him.

Thank you Vivi, what a great retelling of the story.
I wish I were able to comment more than I've been, I miss it, but I've just not had the time lately.

I am going to guess that Belen will turn up dead. I say that because she really needs to be out of the story for Andres and Natalia to end up together.

I think that it was Diego who killed Romulo, and tried to kill Teresa. He has everything to gain from their deaths. And I think he killed Belen. He doesn't want her to tell Ayala that Diego killed Garrido.
I'm going to guess that Diego is the other killing monster in this story, besides Benjamin.

Cynthia- Wow! What a crazy and fascinating story and family lore. Thank you for sharing it. Yep, the good old days for most people are now and hoepfully the future.

Nanette- Yep. That was him. Funny, the first role I saw him in he was a horrible wife abuser. He is excellent playing both good and bad guys and I have seen him do both in five tns now. I wonder if his character will show up again in Yago? I'm going to enjoy him playing sweet Lupe these last two weeks of Hotel.

Cathyx- I like all your predictions. I'm going to guess that Belen isn't dead yet, but that she will be by the end, so that the deeply religious Natalia and Andres can marry in the Church.

Cynthia, that is quite a story! I for one am grateful that my own family history is boring... but wow, that's really something.

I don't remember, did Andres and Belen ever actually have a Church wedding? I know that was important to Andres, but I also remember that the civil ceremony was the priority for Belen, and Belen's always gotten what she wanted. (Which is why I am annoyed that Andres took so long to figure out what a beeyotch she was!)

Julie- The wedding happened while I was still away, and I still have not caught up on all the episodes yet, but Cathyx's recap says they married in the Church: http://caraycaray.blogspot.com/2016/04/el-hotel-do-los-secretos-57.html

Julie, glad you enjoyed the article. But you know, with EHDLS and real life, I'm sure that the writers took from real life history because as incredulous as it all seems, stuff like that really did happen in real life.

Yes, Andres and Belen were married in the church. That was the night that Belen went and told Angela she was not welcome at their nuptials. Olegario was there with his son and that was the only family who attended. There were also people from the town who attended as well to be "witnesses" to the marriage.

Vivi: forgot to tell you how much I liked your title. The Lady Vanishes is one of my all time fav movies (the 1938 Alfred Hitchcock version).

Nanette- Thanks! It's one of my all time fave's too. Did you see the BBC version shown on PBS I think it was last year or the year before?

Everyone- Juju has put up a discussion page for Hotel's Thursday episode. She having trouble watching the episode, and at this moment it has the wrong label (Yago), but feel free to start discussing there.
