Sueño de Amor (SdA) #50. Tuesday May 17, 2016. A Valiant Recapper Has Joined Us, Just In Time To Document La Sombra's Capture! ¡Enhorabuena!

This recap is brought to you by our brand-new recapper and Patio Pal, Kinomathematika. Enjoy!

Monday’s episode left us with several questions:

- How’s Ernesto going to handle having Rodrigo and Selena living in his house?
- How will Anastasia seek revenge against Pato?
- How will Pedro handle Aranza’s clinginess?
- Will Erasmo take Pato’s advice and let Luca help him with the money for Kiko’s operation?
- Will Ricardo be able to finally get the Sombra?
- How will Ricardo get his kids back?

Here’s what happened on Tuesday’s episode:

At the OCN – After being able to locate la Sombra, Ricardo and his team prepare for their mission to capture him.

At Casa Guerrero – Time for Pedro to suffer over the Kristel-Pedro-Aranza love triangle (or Ximena-Nando-Edíth 2.0 love triangle from Mi Corazón es Tuyo but with María Andrea Araujo instead of Daniela Cordero). Anyhoo, Pedro tells Esperanza he’s torn about not being able to tell Kristel the real reason why he is spending so much time with Aranza. He says he told Kristel that he loves her and that he needs her to trust him. He also doesn’t want to abandon Aranza. (I was on Team Edíth last time. I’m on Team Aranza this time. Love Bea Ranero!)

At Viviana’s Penthouse – Pato and Luca are lovey dovey but admit they’re sad when they’re apart. SúperLuca has a “remedy” and is about to propose, but Viviana shows up interrupting them. Is that considered a Duck Block? Sorry. Back to Casa Guerrero – Pedro is still confused. Esperanza encourages him to go see Kristel. The phone rings. It’s Ricardo! Pedro says, “Ay, Mamá, destilas amor. ¿No era una novela?” (“Oh, Mom, you distill (exude) love. Hey, wasn’t that a novela?”) Another novela name drop, but surprisingly not an Osorio production but a Nicandro Díaz show. Anyway, Ricardo calls to let Esperanza know that he was able to get out of el Ministerio Público and thanks to Josefa they were able to locate la Sombra and they’re about to go after him to capture him for once and for all. Esperanza worries and cries. Pedro tries to comfort her.

At la Sombra’s Compound – Cue the spy music. Wasn’t that the music used on Chuck? La Sombra tells Josefa that he is going into hiding indefinitely. He says he wants to tell his sons that he loves them in spite of everything he has done. Before that, he has one last thing to do before he escapes. He reveals his disfigured hand to Josefa and says, “..avenge all Ricardo has done to him for once and for all.”

At Casa Guerrero – Esperanza cleans nervously to take her mind off Ricardo’s going on a dangerous mission “to confront his worst enemy.” Pedro again tries to calm her. The doorbell rings and there’s banging on the door. Ricardo?! No, it’s Nacho, Adán, and Puerquirio who have come to say goodbye.

At Ricardo’s House/La Sombra’s Compound – The “surprise” bomb la Sombra has planned for Ricardo is revealed to us. Max tells Josefa his revenge is an eye for an eye. Josefa asks what he’s planning. At that moment, Ricardo, Iker and Andrés bust in. Max holds his mom at gunpoint, swearing to kill her and tells Ricardo, Iker, and Andrés, his “achichincles” (flunkies, grunts, lackeys), to drop their guns. Ricardo tries to negotiate Josefa’s release by complying despite Josefa pleas not to. Max thinks she betrayed him. Ricardo says not to blame her, that he was the one who put a tracking device in her clothing. Max lets go of Josefa. Ricardo calls out Max on all he’s done.

At Casa Guerrero – Nacho, Adán, and Puerquirio say they want to follow Ricardo’s example and live the American dream.

At la Sombra’s Compound – During negotiating Max’s surrender, Max is about to shoot Ricardo, but Josefa gets in front of Ricardo to protect him. Ricardo sends her away with Iker and also uses that moment as a distraction to take away Max’s gun. They struggle. Cue the fight choreography. (Maybe I’m wrong, but I think they used the same moves in previous fights.) Next Max picks up a shard of glass. Ricardo gets it away from him, puts him in a choke hold until he almost passes out, cuffs him, removes the Phantom of the Opera mask, and arrests him listing the charges.

At Casa Guerrero – Esperanza questions Nacho & Company’s reasoning for going to the US. They tell her that all they have is bad luck and that their luck will change in another country. Esperanza goes to the kitchen for some tea. She keeps hoping to hear that Ricardo is okay.

At Viviana’s Penthouse – Luca is concerned about a prescription that Viviana is taking for her nerves. She tells him not to worry and decides to go back to her room but not before stumbling. Pato offers to accompany her.

At Rehab – Adrián is desperate to escape from his room. He looks for something to remove the screws to take off the chain-link panels on the windows. Dr. Mireya shows up suddenly with his medications and interrupts him. She suggests they talk. How about a subject he likes to talk about? Estrella.

At Casa Gallo – Estrella is on Kiko’s case about his phone call to Salma. She doesn’t like her (no la traga), nor does she like the idea that Kiko likes her. He tells her it’s not that he likes her (le gusta) but that he’s into her (le caiga bien). Estrella tells him she’s upset because she loves Adrián, but he’s in rehab. And now, he’s digs Salma, and then Erasmo is getting money for Kiko’s operation from a questionable source.

At Margarita’s – Salma is talking to Kristel about how she thinks that maybe Kiko is a little young, but makes her smile.

At Casa Guerrero – Esperanza and Pedro bid farewell to Nacho & Company. Nacho tells Esperanza to say goodbye to Ricardo, too. (Dile adiós al flaco, debilucho, y feo de Ricardo, ¿eh?) The phone rings. It’s Ricardo!!! We see his wrist being wrapped and have a gratuitous beefcake shot seeing a shirtless Ricardo. What did Nacho call him? Flaco, debilucho, y feo. (Skinny, weak, and ugly. Right.) So Ricardo tells Esperanza that he caught la Sombra and that he is being put away for life. She’s relieved and happy. She changes the subject and says she has an idea about just the person who can help him solve the problem with his kids and check on them.

At Viviana’s Penthouse – Pato is talking to Luca. She tells him she’s going to take Ernesto a little something when she goes for a visit. And during the visit, she hopes to find out what gives with his hiring la Nacha. Esperanza calls.

On a Path – Erasmo is riding his bike and finds himself remembering his conversation with Pato. He asks himself why.

Opening theme: or my three-part harmony with Shakira and Fher from Maná—Hang on! Pause. Who’s that bad dude with Marjorie De Sousa? Where do I know him from? Process of elimination looking at the credits...it’s Marco Méndez...and he’s not being nice to Marjorie. :(

At Casa Gallo – Estrella calls out Erasmo on his lie about Luca loaning him the money. Kiko also confronts him.

At OCN – Ricardo interrogates Max. Max tells him it isn’t over and that Ricardo is going to die.

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Tracy is showing off her new look and new, animal print dress (natch). She asks Ernesto if he likes it. We see she has gone on a shopping spree. Rodrigo and Selena come down the stairs yelling. Pato is at the door, and she comes bearing Children’s Day presents for Selena and Rodrigo and chocolates for Ernesto. Tracy collects her bags and goes upstairs not greeting Pato. Pato sings her dad’s praises to the kiddos that he’s not such a bad guy. They’re not buying it even though she goes on to tell them that he saved her life and has a huge heart.

At Viviana’s Penthouse – Viviana walks in on Luca at the dining room table and is surprised to find him looking at engagement rings on his tablet. She reminds him that Pato’s quite young. He tells her he’s worried that she will tell him no.

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Pato asks Ernesto about “La Nacha” and why he hired her. He tells her, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” She informs him that Anastasia threatened her. He tells her Mario, as her boss, will keep an eye on her. Pato then asks about “Cracy” being there.

At OCN – With Max’s men either in custody, in hospital, or dead, Iker and Ricardo question how Max will carry out his threat to Ricardo.

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Pato asks Ernesto if he likes Tracy and does he feel something for her. He says he wants to be with her and support her, not sock it to Ricardo. (No quiero darle en la torre a Ricardo) Now a tricky (capciosa) question: and Esperanza? Ernesto says that’s something completely different. He says he has never loved nor will he ever love someone as much as he loves her.

At Dr. Castañeda’s Office – Esperanza is at her checkup for the recurring pain. He orders tests and an ultrasound for the next day.

At the OCN – Max asks Ricardo what he has planned for him. He tells him that in a few hours he’ll be transferred to Altiplano, a maximum security prison. (Um, Altiplano? Hm.) Ricardo goes on to say that he will see his dream come true and live happily ever after. Max threatens him again. Ricardo tells him he’s going away for life. Max tells him he’ll admit whatever he wants, but he wants to see his sons before he gets taken away.

In the streets at night – Erasmo is waiting on a curb, thinking about Pato again. The loan shark shows up with the money and brings along two thugs to intimidate Erasmo. The loan shark asks him if he’s in love. (Awkward) He gives him the money. He also tells him he knows where he lives, where Estrella and Kiko go to school, and makes a smarmy comment about Estrella. He ended with, “It’s a done deal.” (Actually, he said, “Aquí se rompió una taza [y cada quien para su casa].” Literally, a cup has been broken here, each one to his house.) ¡Ay, Erasmo! Why won’t your ego let SúperLuca help you????

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Tracy overhears Pato on the phone that Esperanza’s wedding dress is ready to be picked up. What’s Cracy going to do?

At Casa Guerrero – Esperanza is back and remembers what the doctor said. Pedro is talking to Aranza who tells him to go see Kristel. She’s not going to force him to stay. (A fuerza ni los zapatos: Not even shoes should be forced.) Esperanza is alone with Pedro and tells him to go see Kristel and that she’ll talk to Aranza.

At OCN – Ricardo tells Homero and Virgilio that they don’t have to see Max so he can say goodbye and ask for their forgiveness if they don’t want to. They agree to see him even though they are afraid.

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Tracy and Ernesto overhear Pato telling Rodrigo and Selena that Ricardo caught la Sombra and that he’s going to be put away for a long time. No more nightmares. She gives them their presents and a note from Ricardo. Tears. (I think I blinked. I thought that’s what Esperanza was going to talk to Ricardo about later. Nevermind. This is a novela.)

At Casa Gallo – Erasmo tells Kiko that tomorrow he will schedule the operation so that he can walk again. Estrella tells Erasmo that now he’ll be the one who can’t walk. Kiko asks why. Erasmo raises his voice to Estrella and she backs down about the matter.

At OCN – Max tells Homero and Virgilio that he’s going to miss them and that they might not see each other again. He tells them they will be well in their grandmother’s care, that they are good kids, and that they should do their best in school, have a happy and honest life, and don’t forget about him. Away from them, Ricardo tells the team that as he had promised, now that la Sombra has been caught, he’s resigning.

At Ernesto’s Penthouse – Outside, Pato runs into la Nacha who grabs her by the arm. Pato gets away from her and walks away. As she does so, Anastasia pulls out a gun and mimics shooting her.

At Ricardo’s House – Ricardo gets dropped off by police officers. Esperanza calls. He says he needs a bath (“Huelo a chivo.” Literally, “I smell of goat.”), but will be at her place in half an hour.

En route to Altiplano – Max is in a van being transported to prison. Several other official vehicles are following them. He smiles when he thinks about the bomb he has set for Ricardo.

At Ricardo’s House – Ricardo is about to unlock the door and enter. (Cue closing theme: Time to sing three-part harmony with Paulina and David Holguín)

Mañana:

- Will Ricardo survive the bomb?
- What’s Tracy planning?
- Will Pato say yes to Luca’s proposal?
- How will Anastasia seek revenge against Pato?
- How will Pedro handle Aranza’s clinginess?
- How will Ricardo get his kids back?

¡Ahora sí es oficial! Welcome to the recapping fold, Kinomathematika! You are a natural! This was an exquisite recap: detailed, entertaining, witty, descriptive... I especially enjoyed your funny asides, the vocabulary and dichos, as well as the questions you added for discussion. Many thanks for volunteering to join the SdA recapping team! I look forward to reading more of your work over the coming weeks!

I'm late for work and must skidaddle but here are a couple of quick impressions about this episode:

- Erasmo is too stoopid to keep them kneecaps. Estrella deserves endless brownie points.
- Kracy's new look gives her an air of a dangerous femme fatale as opposed to her usual look of inoffensive harebrained loon. Glad the gringo accent is gone though.
- La Sombra's masks must have suffocated any semblance of good judgement in him which led to his capture by the dumbest Interpol agent that ever lived. Seriously, why did this dude wear a Picasso mask then a Phantom of the Opera mask if he is not disfigured?
- Thank goodness for minimal Kristel sniveling in this episode.

Thanks again for the recap, Kino! Have a good day, everyone! :)

Thank you, Kino, for your excellent and entertaining recap. So glad to have you on Tuesdays recapping with us! Good point about why the "Phantom" mask when Max's face was not disfigured? Just another thing that leaves you wondering in this production. But, hey, if Osorio is going to include EVERYTHING in one novela, I guess he cannot be too picky.

My favorite part: Pato calling Tracy "Cracy". Has someone been reading this blog? Who was it that came up with it? Nandicta? Pablo?

The "Altiplano" placement made me go "hmmm", too. humor? That might come back to bite them or at least let La Sombra come back to bite and terrorize Ricardo and company.

At least Estrella has a brain when it comes to the surgery money. At this point Erasmo gets what he deserves for his pride and what he knows is a bad decision.

Ernesto was so slick at his place carefully maneuvering his way through the conversation with Pato re: Ricardo, the kids , Esperanza, Tracy.

So, we know Ricardo cannot die but will he be injured and end up in a hospital bed next to Esperanza (just presuming she will have a serious medical problem since this is the second time with the same symptoms)? Maybe the bomb will be a dud. Can Marjorie arrive soon, please, just to add a little variety to the suffering experienced by so many?

Welcome Kino and congratulations on a stellar debut.

"What did Nacho call him? Flaco, debilucho, y feo. (Skinny, weak, and ugly. Right.)" was my favorite line of many.

Thank you so much for translating the conversation between Ernesto and Pato. I wasn’t sure how Ernesto felt about Esperanza any more. I know he loved her but I thought the feelings were diminishing. Jarifa, "slick" is the perfect word to describe how he danced around his daughter's questions. I apologize for repeating this but Julian Gil has never been as appealing to me as he has been here. Flashes of a genuine smile and some true goodness (amidst the evil) are interesting and different for his character.

I'm impatient and perturbed that Erasmo is being so thick headed Nandicta. Surely he realizes the danger he has put himself in? This will not end well.

Kino, yes, Marco is the new villain who will be showing up shortly. He was a third tier galan in PyP, very sweet. And very handsome. But I will always remember him as a dastardly doctor in Querida Enemiga. I think this part may well rival that.

I have many ideas floating around in my head as to things that might happen but I won't speculate. Never a dull moment and I think the excitement will mount.

Thank you again!

Diana

Thanks for the great recap.

I felt sorry (ternurita) for that fake fight and really wanted la sombra to shoot Ricardo. I know Osorio didn't kill Esperanza in episode 20 (but maybe he will now) and is not going to kill Ricardo in episode 50, but if they are so desperate for raitings, why not?

Why replacing the female lead and not the male?

Why not kill Ricardo and bring Marco with all the hoopla they have been making for Super Marjorie the telenovela saviour?

Hopefully Ricardo will die today in the blast so we can start from scratch with a new galán for at least another 50 episodes.

Pablo, ITA. It would be nice to see something "bold" to shake things up. Do we know how many episodes in this one yet? Don't most of them shake out at about 130?

Diana, I so agree about Julián Gil. As a matter of fact, I wish that the novelas were not so tied into limiting leading roles to those who they consider to be the most " physically attractive." It would be great to see someone like a Julián Gil (who is a good looking guy but always stuck in the villain role) as a leading man much like Erik Elías is the leading man over on "El hotel de los secretos". I hate to see actors so tightly "typed" as good guys/bad guys.

OT: On my soap box: (nothing new but I just have to say it after reading all of the mainstream "up fronts" news this a.m.) With new distribution platforms growing daily and normal tv in probably its greatest upheaval ever just due to these new outlets, it looks like telenovelas are going to have to do something more innovative to keep people watching. Times are a changing very quickly and so is the availability of more varied and original content. Now, I will step off my box and into recapping tonight's episode. : )

You know Jarifa, I always saw Gil as very handsome, there was just something about him...Now I see I was wrong (an everyday occurrence recently) and realized it was the parts he was playing, not the actor.

To me, it's always been about the charisma. One of my favorite actors is Fabian Robles. Now, to me he is good looking but he is a real "shape changer" and can (and does) adapt to any role. Ditto for Alberto Estrella.

Sexy is as sexy does.

I agree with your comments about the future of TNs and of course, you made your point perfectly. It's such a shame because there is so much talent but apparently good writing is sparse. I know there are talented writers but they are not being utilized. Things need to be shaken and stirred - definitely.

Diana

Pablo, since you opened the door, I'm stepping in :)

From the ominous doctor visit, I did wonder (for the first time) last night if Esperanza is going to be killed off. My pure speculation.

This fine actress has been stellar and if she is being sacrificed for better ratings, shame on Osario.

I am hoping this is a red herring and that she and Ricky will live happily ever after (simply because that is her wish, not mine).

Huge sigh.

Diana

OK.

Let's say this novela is not resulting what they thought and their first impulse is to ADD MORE PEOPLE instead of changing the writing team and/or improve the plot without altering the characters we already know and love/hate. What would a smart person do?

Adding a new character, in this case a gorgeous woman (and a handsome man, more discreetly maybe because he is not considered novela saver, so she takes all the credit after all), instead of taking more care of the plots and the lack of, for me, if I was Ms Monroe, would be humilliating.

Not all novelas have to have a lead that is perfect in every way. Normal sized women with curves culd be more appealing to most of people. But anyway, I just don't want Monroe to be sacrified for something she didn't do, when her only mistake was to trust Osorio in the hopes to get the protagonist role she never had with Azteca. Big mistake!

Diana, it is the old "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and I sure don't agree with a lot of telenovela choice of "galanes". I so agree about the charisma being the most important. I preferred Pedro Fernández to David Zepeda in HEFDM just for that reason. Just because an actor has a pretty face and looks like he lives in a gym does nothing for me.

Pablo, ITA that Betty Monroe should not be sacrificed for a a poor plot she did not write. There is nothing wrong with her acting or her looks.

Pablo and Jarifa, I couldn't agree more.

Betty is one of my favorite characters here and I thought she was tailor made for the role. She and Christian could have been a great couple had they had any sort of decent storyline. I saw some definite chemistry possibilities.

Jarifa, again, I wasn't a Pedro Fernandez fan but I was pleasantly surprised and thought he was doing great in HEFDM. I didn't realize HOW great he was until David arrived. Yikes. Nothing against David, but the earnestness that was so real with Pedro totally disappeared. I think Betty has the same quality along with believability.

Diana

KINO, welcome to the team!!! This has been a great read, you didn't miss one beat. And you got to recap La Sombra's capture. Oy!!
A little underwhelming, if you ask me, but how long could they drag this story without making Ricardo a complete and total incompetent (some might argue that he's already there).

I feel like the story is taking a serious turn. La Sombra is caught, Marjorie is about to show up, Erasmo is thinking about Pato (wow, that IS a surprise!)...
I hope they don't kill off Esperanza, I love Betty Monroe, she has been a refreshing surprise. I came here for Cristian de la Fuente, but I'm sticking around for her and my recapping duties.

I don't understand why Marjorie is considered a tn savior? What tn has she saved? She played a sex bomb in the Eduardo Yanez tn and I think I read some critics about her stealing the spot light, so much so that they gave her a protagonico. But she didn't wow anyone playing the good girl and the Pedro Fernandez situation only made things worse.
I do know her from a couple of tns in Venezuela and she's a good actress (not to mention gorgeous), but I hope they don't push Betty Monroe aside for her, because they are completely different types, they shouldn't be put in a competition.

I love Julian Gil in this tn and I did see him play a protagonista in Quien eres tu? He was really good and believable, too. Aside from Betty, he's my favorite part about the story.

Good to hear Julián Gil got to play a good guy somewhere some time. I would like to see him in more of those roles.

For those curious, a clip from Quien Eres Tu? of Julian Gil and Laura Carmine, who most often play villains, playing the good protagonists who are in love (starts at min 28:04): https://youtu.be/VUO87Bd8jz0?t=1684

Just a quick thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! :-)

Jarifa, I almost didn't watch SdA because of Julián Gil, who was such a mean villain on Hasta el Fin del Mundo. His blend of narcissism and Machiavellianism were so believable.

Kino, I sure agree he was a wonderful villain in HEFDM.

Thanks for the video clip, Vivi.
