Esclava: Let's go Team Miguel!

EVA – LUNES

This would have been a great episode for a lengthy recap. Many great moments. But alas, I have a basketball game to watch. So here’s the bare minimum.

Armando tells Eva he can’t rat out Marlene and go to jail because he has to stay close to La Alacrana to project Eva and his daughters. [For me, this represented foreshadowing about his dying saving Eva and/or the girls.]

JJ understands why Pablo kissed Dra. Sweetfgace, but tells him he blew it with Eva. He recommends a night of passion with Eva.

Pablo lost one of his allies in Soraya when she finds out about his kissing Ana.

The drivers who run drugs and who killed Pancho come to see Marlene at home. They want their money. But, as always, she gets her way and they leave.

One of the cops discovers whose photo was on the false drivers license used to rent the truck that killed Pancho. [What took them so long?]

Pablo tells JJ that he and Eva are never going to work out.

Pablo and Martín come to court with Federica when Laila is sentenced to death for killing Sebastián. [Doesn’t work this way in CA. The verdict of guilty or not guilty is pronounced and then there’s a delay while the judge mulls over the sentence.]

Marlene calls on Rebeca for another trabajito. We find out it is to arrange the murder of the guy Fajardo put in jail and tried to get to talk about who hired him.

We get an “of all the gin joints…” scene. Eva is having dinner with Rey. She tells him she’s glad to feel feminine for a night. Of course, Pablo chooses the same restaurant to take Ana to dinner to thank her for all her help with Cecilia. I’ll leave description of this long scene to anyone else who has more time. Bottom line, Eva and Pablo are both intensely jealous. When Pablo dances with Ana, Eva has had enough and tells Rey she wants to leave.

In another terrific acting job, Soraya, in tears, tells Luis and Adriana that they caught one of the guys who killed Pablo. What she really wants is the ones who paid for it.

Esteban gets a call from Camila about their postponed movie date while Noemi looks on. Now this is sad. Both Noemi and Camila deserve a guy like Esteban

Dr. Sweetface calls Pablo on his immature behavior when he brings her home. But she does ask for a kiss. He complies in spades and things move on from there. But she jumps up and asks him to leave. Apparently she wisely has chosen against revenge sex.

Andy overhears Rebeca’s “mission accomplished” phone call with his sister. He calls her pathetic and says she’s fallen in love with La Alacrana. He tells her his sister will use her and then throw her aside. Rebeca feebly says that she doesn’t go for women.

Eva

novelera, your recaps are the best in all shapes and sizes.

so both Pablo and Eva lament how they have lost the other, then go on a hot date to the same restaurant, the kind of place where a one couple will be dancing amongst the tables while people eat.

Pablo and Eva are giving gran amor, a bad name.

quite the dissertation by the jury foreman, she could have just said guilty, loved the way the guard carried Leila out under his arm.

so Pablo and Federica were sitting where the prosecuting attorney would have sat, what?

do we get to watch the execution like in Bajo?

the Mon-Sol bad-guy driver is dead-in-jail, camera covered with a rag, but what about his partner, Marlene wants to know, and he shouldn't be too hard for the cops to find because those two were always together.

Señora Acero 3: La Coyote

anyone remember Luis Ernesto Franco, Rodrigo in "Bajo el mismo cielo", looks like he is a border guard in this one.

Eva

deb, I loved your "Pablo and Eva are giving gran amor a bad name." So true! I find it hard to believe that they'll be together at the end. Or that I'd want them to be.

Eva

Many thanks, novelera, for this excellent recap. It may be easy to write a brief recap, but it's very hard to do a terrific job such as you've done here. I can't think of anything important that you've left out.

I loved your "We get an “of all the gin joints…” scene." Where would movies and novelas be without coincidences?

Eva. Excellent recap, novelera: all the high points of the plot + insightful comments and additional information (the sentencing procedure in CA), and just enough snark to give the reader a chuckle. :) In real life, it's very unlikely that Leila would have had the death penalty. Given the huge amount of evidence against her, it's much more probable that there would be a plea bargain for life in prison without possibility of parole. This verdict did give the actress an opportunity to show off her acting skills and, as they say, tear up the scenery a bit. The LA police never thought of giving extra protection to the thug involved in Pancho"s death? At least they did specify that the surveillance camera was covered up, but would it really be that easy to do so? Again, the writing seems a bit sloppy. And of course, in this episode, the only judge in LA renders the verdict, Eva, Rey, Pablo and Ana all show up at the only respectable dinner and dance restaurant in LA (I too loved novelera's "of all the gin joints"comment) (just as there is one sleazy bar where Evencio and Armando meet). And of course Andy is absolutely right about Rebeca and Marlene. Marlene ends up betraying absolutely everyone. I wonder if this time it will be fatal.

Eva. I hadn't been that impressed with the character of Reynaldo, but he was an awfully good sport at the restaurant when Pablo and Ana showed up, and he helped Eva keep her reaction in bounds. Hope he ends up with someone nice.

Eva

Following up on SpanProf's "Marlene ends up betraying absolutely everyone," I find myself wondering whether even Andy will finally be betrayed by her. Or whether her ultimate punishment will include her being betrayed by him. (Frankly, based on how this novela is progressing, I wouldn't bet money on the long-term survival of either Andy or Armando.)

La Esclava Blanca – Monday, June 13 – Capítulo 38, part 1/3

Nicolas is worried about the slaves revolting. He tells Victoria he thinks the Quinteros were killed by their own slaves. She gets out of spending the night with him again saying estoy en mis días (I’m on my period).

Hilaria’s still heating up water for Adela’s bath. Nicolas calls for her and she remarks to Siervo that they can’t live without her in that house. Trinidad comes in and asks him for a favor, putting something in his hand.

Nicolas asks Hilaria if she’s loyal to Adela and if she cares for her. Nicolas doesn’t understand why since ella no es amable con nadie y mucho menos con los esclavos (she is not kind to anyone and much less to the slaves). He wants her to go to the fiesta that night to find out who is supporting the causa in exchange for bringing her children out of the mines and to El Eden.

Trinidad tells Miguel to go on to the fiesta. He has something important to do...

Nicolas is annoyed that Hilaria is taking so long to respond. He accuses her of being a bad mother. She agrees to go and find out who all of the supporters are. She tells Siervo where she’s going and he knows she hasn’t brought the water up to Adela.

Everyone is walking out to the fiesta. Trinidad catches up with Miguel. Hilaria also joins them and Miguel looks on suspiciously.

Victoria is looking at the book about tunnels. Siervo knocks on the door to deliver something to Remedios from Trinidad. It’s a shell. Victoria explains that esto aquí es tipico entre los enamorados. El nácar significa pureza, y el espiral, eternidad (this here is typical between lovers. The nacre [mother of pearl] means purity, and the spiral, eternity).

Adela keeps calling Hilaria from the bathtub. Victoria goes in the bathroom to tell her that Hilaria and all the other slaves are at the fiesta, but she will help her. Adela is practically mortified that Victoria is there and kicks her out.

Remedios won’t stop looking at the shell. Victoria is sad that she has to lidiar con los caprichos (deal with the whims) of her mother-in-law. She suddenly gets an idea and runs out of the room.

Siervo goes into the bathroom with the hot water and Adela is even more mortified, cowering in the tub and yelling FUERA! (OUT!) Victoria feels bad for involving Siervo in this, but Adela deserved her castigo (punishment). Siervo actually feels sorry for Adela, calling her la mujer más pobre del mundo (the poorest woman in the world). She’s always had Hilaria, her only companion, to do everything for her. Victoria learns that Hilaria arrived directly from Africa even before Siervo was with the Parreños and that she has two sons, who are in the mines in the south, que es lo mismo decir que están muertos (which is the same as saying they are dead).

Arriving at the inn, Hilaria is surprised that Julian stays outside and that none of the slaves try to escape. Quién va a querer dañarse la unica alegría que tiene (who’s going to want to damage the only happiness they have)? Inside, Jesus and Gabriel let Miguel know they are with him, but Manuela is thinking it over. Miguel wants to tell slaves from another hacienda something. It must stay between them. Candela is annoyed that they think Diosdado as well as herself cannot be trusted. Miguel knows she’s on their side. He announces they may have a way for all the slaves to escape. Tomas adds por debajo de los pies de los amos (under the feet of the slaveowners). Someone makes a joke that there’s no more chirrinche (the fermented drink they’re drinking - popular in the Andean region of Colombia) for him.

Paca asks Francisco if she can stay the night with Ana to take care of her. He agrees. Cuno arrives to announce that Nicolas is there to see him. As soon as he leaves the room, Ana opens her eyes and tells Paca she knows what she has to do.

La Esclava Blanca – Monday, June 13 – Capítulo 38, part 2/3

Nicolas knows that Francisco is behind Catalina’s murder and he is not happy. Francisco accuses him of not doing his part to help. Nicolas tries to make him realize that killing a white woman is completely different than killing slaves and the General will investigate. Could he have left un cabo suelto (a loose end)?

The General and Alonso are questioning Garcia. The General definitely thinks he could have killed Catalina, and it would be una deshonra (dishonor/disgrace) for the military. It’s the only lead and they have to follow it.

Back at the fiesta, Miguel is talking about the tunnels. They have to see where they lead and if they need to dig more. But where would they put the dirt? asks Trinidad. They will rely on their white allies. He calls over Jesus and Gabriel. Hiliaria is watching them.

Nicolas wants to make sure that no one finds out what they did. Francisco says there’s no need to worry because yo me largo esta misma noche de acá (I’m out of here tonight). He’s just waiting for Ana to get a little better and they’re leaving during the night. Francisco shakes his hand, saying we will never see each other again. Eso espero (I hope not), Nicolas responds.

Miguel asks Jesus and Gabriel if they can store tools and dirt at the inn while they dig the tunnels. They have to figure out how to transport it there without raising any suspicions. Hilaria is dancing a little too closely to them and Miguel doesn’t want her to hear. She wants to know if anyone wants more drinks, she’s paying. Miguel is harsh with her; nada invitado por ti puede ser bueno (nothing offered/paid for by you can be good). Hilaria walks away looking sad.

Tomas doesn’t want them to be so tough on her; she’s been through very difficult times in her life. She had her two children taken from her and sent to the mines. Even Candela did not know that. She invites Hilaria back over to join them since she feels sorry for her, but Angela arrives at that moment to ask if they know anything about Felipe, and they’re going to follow through with their plans, aren’t they? Hilaria hears everything and Candela’s eyes are about to fall out of her head. Miguel tells her to go dance with him. She gasps when sees Hilaria sitting there.

Francisco kills Garcia by stabbing him, after telling him he did a good job not telling the General anything. Cuno looks on horrified.

Angela will see Felipe at the funeral the next day, and tell him about the tunnels. Julian stops the music and tells everyone it’s time to leave. Paca arrives just then and announces to Miguel, Trinidad, Tomas and Milagros that Francisco is a murderer along with Jaime and Arturo. He plans to leave that night with Ana, who he beat badly, and the trip could kill her. Miguel wants to go right then to confront Francisco, to make him pay for what he’s done. Tomas tries to talk him out of it; Victoria would not be able to bear his death if Francisco kills him. Who is Victoria? Trinidad asks. No one answers him.

Miguel wants Paca to tell him where to take un atajo (a shortcut) and he’ll follow her. Julian asks Milagros to stay in the last group with him. At first she says no, but Miguel signals to her to say yes. Bueno, solo si me haces charla (Ok, only if you chat with me). Trinidad asks once again who Victoria is. Miguel says not now.

La Esclava Blanca – Monday, June 13 – Capítulo 38, part 3/3

Victoria is still reading the book about tunnels. Remedios wants to know how they will get everyone across the ocean; in a boat they will rent, Victoria says. Y con qué duros (and with what money [the duro was a 5 peso coin]? Someone starts to open the door so they pretend to be asleep. Victoria “wakes up” as Nicolas walks in. He wants things to continue getting better between them. Nunca jamás voy a obligarte a hacer nada que tú no quieras hacer, mi amor (I’m never going to make you do anything you don’t want to do, my love). He hopes she forgives him for threatening her in the past. She just says good night, and he leaves. Remedios wonders if he actually has a heart and is falling in love with her. Victoria thinks he just wants to be at peace with himself, and to control her.

Julian thinks there are a few slaves missing, and he’s nervous because of the painted signs and the causa. Milagros tells him it’s just a few resentful people; there is no actual causa. He seems to believe her. She keeps flirting with him to keep him from counting everyone.

Francisco is frantically packing. He tells Cuno, who has just returned from getting rid of Garcia’s body, to get two more slaves to go with them. He burns a letter.

Miguel, Tomas, and Trinidad arrive with Paca at Francisco’s. Miguel knows that Ana is a good person and he’s also doing this for her since she does not deserve the horrible husband she has.

Ana starts to get up; Francisco comes in and see that Paca is not there. Ana says she’s just making some tea. Francisco starts packing her things. They are going to the interior to start over.

Siervo tells Hilaria that Nicolas needs to see her and that he está de malas pulgas (he has a bad temper). Siervo is suspicious of her.

Paca lets the guys in. Cuno tells Francisco that Paca was not in the kitchen. Ana is standing in the doorway. He goes towards her, but Trinidad grabs him. He manages to get away and Miguel comes in from behind Ana pointing a gun at him. Esta vez, tú eres el cazado (this time, you are the hunted). They take him outside and Ana asks Paca to help her out because she wants to see what they do to him.

Hilaria tells Nicolas that it was just Miguel and Paca talking with some slaves from other haciendas that she doesn’t know. It was also just the Restrepos who painted the signs. The only plan they have is to stop working in order to improve their working conditions. She asks about her children. Nicolas just says mañana, lo arreglamos (we’ll sort it out tomorrow). He stays seated at his desk, drinking, looking really angry.

Esclava

I am caught up and thus able to comment. Terrific recap, J! All of yours are amazing!

Nicolás is SO despicable. I’m not sure if what I remember is correct. But I thought that he promised to take her sons out of the mines and bring them to El Edén to live near their mother and not just to improve their living conditions at the mine. Any mother would be sorely tempted, and Hilaria is already not 100% on the side of her fellow slaves. I thought the remarks about her were interesting. Can’t remember if it was Siervo or Tomás who talked about her coming to the hacienda right after coming from Africa. What I remember about the remarks had to do with a slave recently arrived from Africa being more likely to completely lose hope than someone born into it. That sort of seems counter to what has often been portrayed; i.e., in Roots, that a person who had been free in Africa would resist more.

Hilaria surprised me by not ratting out everyone. Not sure where they’re going with this.

Loved seeing Francisco grabbed up and helpless. Ana liked it a lot as well.

I think Trinidad is kind of loose cannon. He followed Victoria once and saw her with Miguel. He at times seems bitter and almost jealous of Miguel. He’s made some nasty remarks about Nicolás giving him preferential treatment. And he’s conflicted. He’s made many statements about mixing races being bad, but he’s in love with Remedios.

Esclava,

terrific recap as usual J!

that Nicolas is always working some kind of angle, coming to Victoria late at night and telling her how the slaves down south have already started rebelling, and how before at Eden they killed the owners, like you...

and Siervo's remarks about Adela, she can't even get out of the tub by herself, is she still there?

Nicolas shattered Hilaria's perfect world by making her a spy, I wonder if her sons are even alive, it was interesting her response on the causa, just enough to sound real, but then she would be an expert at walking the middle of the road.

not sure what Miguel's plan is with Francisco, but interesting to see Tomas going along, I don't think they are killers and they do have their faces covered, but if Nicolas gets wind of it I suspect he will finish the job, and then there is Cuno.

Miguel's escape plan seems to be exploring the tunnels and maybe digging more, while Victoria has a book showing them all and is she thinking about hiring a boat to take them all away, what?

Esclava

J, Eva is about to start, and I'm recapping it tonight, so all I can say is that you've once again written an amazingly fine recap. Muchísimas gracias otra vez.

Eva

Tonight's recap will appear sometime tomorrow morning.

La Esclava Blanca... epi 39/61
part 1

Francisco calls for help but no one does, he threatens to kill them and their families, he calls his attackers cowards for covering their faces, Ana watches.

Milagros is distracting Julian, he thinks she is a mysterious woman, never seen her with any man, and the plants and medicines, where did you learn that, from my mother she says, he also remembers his mother, she is always inside him, Milagros asks when he first came to Eden, Julian doesn't remember, just the first time he saw her, his dream has always been to have a serious relationship with her, they kiss.

Francisco is taken to the stables where he is strung up and beaten, and reminded of Rosita and Cata, he begs for his life, Ana does nothing, Miguel says they are not killers, 60 lashes, Francisco says he'd rather die.

to stop a head count, Milagros goes with Julian to Morales old room, now his, (that he's worked hard to get rid of all trace of him), she asks why Julian is so different than Morales, he says a person has a choice, he's alone, if he loses his humanity he will have nothing left, you have me, and she assures him she is doing this because she wants to, Julian doesn't understand, she moves on and they sleep together.

Miguel tells Ana she must go and never come back, but she has nothing, Miguel will give Paca directions where she can stay, Ana asks Miguel to not stain his soul by killing Francisco.

back to dealing with Francisco, who speaks up, and reveals Cuno as the one who betrayed them, ut oh.

then Miguel tells Francisco's slaves to run away, tell everyone what happened but no names, we are one, but first take everything you can sell, he's heard of a settlement near Cartagena.

then Miguel, Tomas, and Trinidad confront Cuno, this is a different matter, but Miguel lets him go, far, because he better never see him again.

one last present for Francisco on their way out, they stand him up and brand him.

as Felipe drinks and grieves, Paca arrives with Ana, Felipe doesn't understand, Paca says it's better if her mistress explains, he takes them in.

Milagros and Julian cuddle, he talks about when you are in love, love? she is quiet, it's late she says, so Julian goes and does his head count, some stragglers, then Miguel, Tomas and Trinidad, and last Milagros, Tomas gives her a look.

later Tomas asks Miguel if Francisco will take revenge, we had our faces covered, Miguel says, and besides they have their honor, do you think he will confess he was tied up and whipped by negroes?

later we see Francisco in his empty house, drink in hand, no shirt (did they brand an A on his back) he's ashamed, he pulls a knife and... but throws it at the mirror, he truly is a coward.

it's morning, Enith is proud of what Miguel has done, (she likes him) but Trinidad sends her back to the women, so who is Victoria, she is my wife, Miguel says, Trinidad isn't buying it, it's clear you don't trust me and walks away, but Miguel elaborates, she's the Marquesa, what?, now Trinidad really thinks he's crazy, but Miguel tells the story about how she is the heir to Eden, grew up in the Palenque, but who is Reme Trinidad asks, she is an orphan the was in the same convent in Spain that Padre Octavio sent Victoria to hide her from her parent's killers, and now that I have told you, you must do your part and keep Victoria's secret.

and when Miguel tells Trinidad that Victoria and Reme will be coming with them when they escape, this just doesn't sit well.

La Esclava Blanca... epi 39/61
part 2

Adela gets on Hilaria for leaving, the master sent me, and they talk about parties, neither were big on them, but both think that maybe that was their loss, Adela laughs, we have been together so long we ended up the same.

Nicolas gets up early. grabs his gun, and has the slaves out on the lawn, he plans to sell some, he wants women in one line and men in the other, children go home because he won't sell them, and we see this random cold process of picking slaves regardless of their family or friends, and his last pick, Hilaria.

Alonso has gotten a doctor and while he looks at Ana, he and Felipe talk, Alonso is not for coming between man and wife, but they both agree she will only return if she wishes, the doctor reports she has 2 broken ribs, bruises, broken cheek bone, etc etc, he is from out of town but will stay for a few days to check on her and gets a room at the inn, Manuela is flattered that he choose her place, gives him her best room and a discount.

the General comes to see Francisco (who is wearing a clean shirt) who tells of his slaves rebelling, and? Francisco wants no more to do with those devils, and where would he find them now, next the General asks about Garcia, he didn't show up for work, and then about Ana, she fell down the stairs Francisco says, but the general knows he beat her, and how do you know and where is she, Francisco demands, but the General refuses to tell him, and after he leaves Francisco swears he will bring Ana back if he has to drag her by her hair.

Felipe is getting ready for the funeral, Ana apologizes for coming, Miguel shouldn't have sent me here, it was no mistake Felipe says, Miguel knows me well, I had no reason for living, now I do to takes care of you two, but what about the consequences, and Ana quotes the... "what therefore God has joined together, let no man separate", but Felipe gives her some hope that maybe the law can help.

Victoria comes to a weeping Adela, asks if she wants to say goodbye to Hilaria, I can't she says, as Hilaria is gathering her things in the kitchen, if any letters come from my kids could you give them to mistress Adela, and Siervo hugs her, but wait here is Adela, she won't crack, she can't crack, she dismisses the others, and tells Hilaria she doesn't know what she did to make Nicolas sell her but it was her fault, but all we see are two old dear friends who deeply love each other, and Hilaria asks one last favor.

Reme comes up to Trinidad who is working and tells him how much she loved his present, he says he shouldn't have given that to her, he knows she is a fake and not the Marquesa's servant, and stomps away...

Esclava

interesting that when Nicolas reveals he is going to sell some slaves, Miguel challenges him, at the risk of going to the pit, but Nicolas counters with he would not send him there but sell him, and Tomas always with the look, could Victoria show Miguel the book already?

and the ladies are wearing black today so I guess we are going to Cata's funeral.

Quién

deb and anyone else who has followed this..... I could not keep up when it was put in a 2-hr slot midday, but caught bits and pieces during my lunch hour. Since this is the final week + next Monday, I've been recording and watching, just to see how everything shakes out. Yesterday's scene, where Inez tells Humberto about Pedro/Leo was done very well. Here's to hoping all the baddies get their just desserts!

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 1 de 4

The episode opens with Fajardo talking with Pablo about the murder in prison of one of the two hired assassins who killed Pancho Mogollon. The guy, Melchor Otega, had been in prison with Andres Palacios. When he got out, he was hired to work for Mon-Sol. Fajardo likens Mon-Sol to the Bermuda Triangle. Fajardo and Pablo go off to see Marlene.

Eva tells Soraya, Virginia, and Camila about the evening where she and Rey were enjoying themselves at a restaurant when in came Pablo and Doctora SweetFace. Eva admitted that she (Eva) was burnt (ardida) because of the situation. She keeps repeating that the doctora is más joven. Camila and Virginia point out that the doctora doesn't have Eva's personality, nor her charm, nor her charisma, but none of this seems to outweigh Eva's repeated assertion that she is más joven. Eva says perhaps that's as it should be: Cada oveja con su pareja. Camila asks what this means. Eva tells her it means that couples should be similar, not a grown woman (una mujer hecha y derecha) partnering with an immature child (un esquincle inmaduro). As she says this, Pablo and Fajardo appear in time to hear what she has said. Thus begins round 264 of The Interminable Argument. Since Viewerville has heard all this before and before and before, there's no need to repeat it here. Fajardo, Soraya, Virginia, and Camila find reasons to leave the field of battle to Eva and Pablo. Virginia and Camila listen at a distance and observe to each other that although Eva and Pablo are quarreling, they still seem to be in love.

Fajardo and Soraya go off by themselves so they can discuss the latest developments in the investigation of Pancho's murder. Fajardo points out that the thug who was arrested for the murder had worked for Mon-Sol. Soraya says it's quite possible that Marlene hired the two assassins (sicarios), but the true intellectual authors of the crime were very likely the Monteverdes. Alas, she doesn't have any proof. She hopes that Fajardo can find a connection, some evidence. Fajardo puts his hand on Soraya's and solemnly promises her that he'll find it. Hmmm.

Meanwhile, at the Monteverdes' new digs, Robert is reading the employment want ads. He decides to answer an ad for a sales executive. Cinthia points out that he has no sales experience. He yells at her for being so negative. She yells back that she has nothing, not her lovely house, not the affection of her son, nothing. "Don't mention that ungrateful brat who has turned his back on us," Robert replies. With perfect telenovela timing, Luis and Adri walk through the door. Luis tells Robert that he's not turning his back on them, and though they don't deserve it, he's going to help them. He takes out his checkbook and says, "I hope this will serve to compensate you for having maintained me all those years" (Espero que esto les sirve para retribuir el favor que me hicieron al mantenerme todos esos años). He hands the check to Robert, who looks at it and replies, "You think you're better than we are, don't you? Well, here's what I can do with this." He's about to tear up the check when Cinthia grabs it from him and thanks Luis profusely.

Fajardo and Pablo come to see Marlene at home. Fajardo tells her that one of her employees, who beat up Evencio Martinez and Enrique Arenas, is implicated in the murder of Pancho Mogollon. At this point, Armando enters the house and asks why they're here. Fajardo explains, and notes that there are two deaths and two disappearances associated with Mon-Sol. "That's a bit suspicious, isn't it?" he asks. He advises Marlene to stay put, and then he and Pablo leave. After they're gone, Armando asks Marlene "OK, now what? Are you going to kill those two as well?"

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 2 de 4

Elsa reads about Melchor's death in the newspaper and asks Javier, "Is this the same guy who was looking for Marlene last week?" Javier replies, "Are you thinking the same as I am?"

Pablo goes to see Doctora SweetFace at home. He sees a bunch of lit candles and says if he's interrupting something, he'll leave and come back later. She informs him that she's meditating, and suggests that he stay. They can do yoga together. This unsettles Pablo, but SweetFace tells him to relax, she'll explain what he has to do. He follows her instructions to close his eyes, inhale, and then exhale, but he soon asks "You don't think you could teach me something else?" He then kisses her (something for which he needs no teaching). They kiss for a while, after which Dra SF tells him he's deceitful (un tramposo). "Last night you were so worried about Eva and her friend, and now you've decided to seduce me. Why?"

While Pablo is visiting Doctora SweetFace, Armando arrives at Eva's. It's his Saturday to be with Fabiola, he reminds her. He suggests to Fabiola that she invite Eva to go have pizza with them: "If you ask her, she'll agree." But Eva doesn't agree. She sends Fabiola off with Armando and thinks to herself, "Armando, you're wasting your time. You're not going to use my daughters to get to me."

As Armando leaves with Fabiola, Andy drives up. He's sure that very soon, Camila has to leave the house. Why he thinks so isn't clear to me, but sure enough, moments later along comes Camila. She's busy reading a text message from Esteban asking whether she's already left [to meet him at the movies]; Andy grabs her from behind and puts the standard telenovela chloroformed handkerchief over her face. It may be that the handkerchief is also an invisibility cloak, since this happens on the sidewalk in broad daylight without anyone seeing what's happening. Andy puts the unconscious Camila in his car and drives off.

Meanwhile, back at Doctora SweetFace's house, Pablo is explaining to her that he spent the night thinking about everything she said. He wants to leave the past behind and start over again. "I've had so much drama in my life," he tells her. "You're the opposite of drama: you're calm, wise, sweet. I'm sick of solitude. I want to love you. I need to love you." [This doesn't sound like True Love to me, but Pablo removes his shirt and they go at it.]

True Love, Andy style, involves his bringing the unconscious Camila back to wherever it is he has moved to, tieing her up, and putting a gag over her mouth. When she regains consciousness, he removes the gag and starts explaining that he loves her and wants to go away with her. Perhaps not thinking clearly about whom she's talking to, Camila tells him it isn't going to happen, she saw him and Rebeca carrying a cadaver, he's an assassin. Andy becomes very upset and swears to her that he didn't kill the person. "Then who killed her?" Camila asks. Andy doesn't respond. Just then, Camila's phone rings. It's Esteban asking where she is. Andy becomes enraged again. "You have another novio," he screams. She tells him that it's none of his business, but that Esteban is not her novio, just a friend. Andy, furious, throws Camila's phone across the room and screams at her "You're a liar, a whore!" (¡Eres una mentirosa, una cualquiera!). He immediately apologizes and tells her "I need you! I've never felt this for a woman before. I need you with me. I need you here." Camila tells him "I know who you are. I want nothing to do with you!" She spits at him. He slaps her and then apologizes profusely. Perdoname, perdoname, perdoname.

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 3 de 4

Marlene is with Rebeca. She's trying to reach Andy, but he isn't answering his phone [it sounded to me like a busy signal]. She's worried. "I hope he hasn't decided to go to Mexico. The police are looking for him, and he won't succeed." Rebeca tells her not to worry and assures her that he's not such a fool. After a while, Marlene says she has to leave, and she asks Rebeca to call her if Andy returns. Rebeca assures her that she will. Marlene tells her that each day she trusts Rebeca more, she has become a loyal friend, and there aren't many of those around (Eso no abunda mucho). She puts her hand on Rebeca's cheek, says Gracias, guapa, and leaves. Rebeca looks extremely happy, and she puts her hand on the cheek Marlene touched. [Hmmm. What was it that Rebeca said to Andy in a previous episode about not liking women?]

We move from evil to innocence in the next scene, one between Fabiola and Armando. They are eating pizza, and Fabiola tells her father that when she grows up, she's going to be a great painter, like Frida Kahlo. She explains to the clueless Armando that Kahlo was a Mexican painter who painted about her sorrows (pintaba sobre sus dolores). She always paints a single flower because that's all that she sees, the rest doesn't exist (Siempre pinta una sola flor, porque es todo lo que ve y lo demás no existe). [Wow!] Armando is quite moved, and he tells her that he knows that he has been un bruto with her, but that's over. In the past, he didn't have confidence in her, but things are different now. He knows that she will grow up to be a great woman because she's a very special girl (una niña muy especial). He wants her to know that he's very proud of her, and he wants her to trust him, because he'll always be here. [Oops, do I hear an anvil about to drop?]

At Soraya's, Adri tells Luis (whom she calls Bobby) that she thinks the Monteverdes don't deserve his generosity. He says he doesn't want to be cruel. She replies that "cruel" is stealing a baby, "cruel" is repeatedly trying to rob his parents. Luis insists that they've done no harm to anyone. Adri says that's not true. Luis asks her to explain. At that moment, Soraya, who has been listening unseen, comes in to suggest that they all have lunch.

Cinthia pays a visit to Marlene. She tells Marlene that she and Robert have had to move to a dreadful place, and she wonders whether it would be possible for them to move to her guest house, which isn't being used. Sweet Marlene replies that it would not be possible, that she would hate to have such annoying neighbors. Cinthia, desperate, tells Marlene that recently she has been thinking of doing something extremely crazy (He pensando hasta en...en cometer una locura). [I assume she means she's been thinking of killing herself.] The ever sympathetic Marlene replies "Oh Cinthia, stop being so dramatic." She reminds Cinthia that she owes Marlene money for all the favors she has done for her and Robert, and that if Cinthia can't find a way to pay her, perhaps Marlene will help her commit her crazy act (quizás pueda ser yo la que te ayude a cometer esa...locura).

After Soraya, Luis, and Adri return from lunch at a restaurant, Soraya says that Adri feels feverish, and she sends Luis off to find a sweater Adri can put on. As soon as Luis has left the room, Soraya says she appreciates Adri's support but she doesn't want Luis to suffer more, and so she doesn't want to tell him anything about the Monteverdes role in Pancho's death until there's proof. Only until then. Adri understands and agrees.

EVA LA TRAILERA - MARTES - Parte 4 de 4

OK, I don't know how this recap got to be so long, but ¡ya basta! There are five more scenes I want to mention VERY briefly:

1) Armando and Fabiola bring back pizza for Eva. And then who should arrive but Rey, bringing pizza for everyone and drinks for the adults. Armando glares at him and leaves.

2) The second assassin comes to see Marlene. He tells her he wants to make sure that what happened to his buddy doesn't happen to him. He asks her outright, "Did you have anything to do with Melchor's death?" [Does he really expect her to confess?]

3) Enrique and Virginia agree to live together.

4) Esteban returns and announces that Camila stood him up at the movies. He asks where she is.

5) Camila tells Andy that love can't be forced. He insists on accompanying her even when she wants to go to the bathroom to pee. She tells him what she and we know all too well: Andy is demented (Eres un demente). On that note, the episode ends.

Eva. Excellent and very complete recap, Juanita! Good on the chloroformed handkerchief as an invisibility cloak and the anvil about to drop on Armando. Of course Pablo comes in just as Eva is calling him a kid (it's a telenovela). Then they prove it by squabbling like a couple of middle schoolers. Andy is now officially crazy. He's dropped hints of it before, but this is now in the realm of hostage taking, police standoff nuts. It looks a s if he may not even make it into "últimas semanas." I did notice that he had a hard time hefting Camila into the car. I wonder if the authors thought of that when they cast the 2 actors. Usually the villains have no trouble lugging around kidnap victims, but this seems more "real." Fajardo and Soraya? Hmm. Maybe not a bad idea and one that Pancho from up in heaven might even approve. Soraya is too wonderful to be lonely the rest of her life. Btw, the "real" Melchor Ortega was the author of a sixteenth-century Spanish romance of chivalry: Felixmarte de Hircania--not a bad example of the genre. Wonder if the author means anything by that, if it's a joke or just a coincidence, or if there was some other historical Melchor Ortega whose name they borrowed. .

¿Quién es Quién?

I'm still trying to catch up with some episodes I missed in the middle but I have been watching all last week and this week. These last few episodes have been really good. I can't wait to see what happens to puercoespín and his terrible mother! I have a feeling Chamoy is going to die or sacrifice himself for his sons somehow.

Esclava Blanca

Siervo mentioned to Victoria that slaves from Africa lose hope more easily than those born in the Americas, which I also thought sounded backwards, novelera. Maybe Hilaria had already been enslaved in Africa though?

Thanks for Tuesday's recap, deb!

Poor Hilaria! Ok, I feel a tiny bit sorry for Adela now.

I really hope Trinidad doesn't do something stupid... what is his problem??

I just found out that I can access Telemundo using my off-the-air antenna. I am used to watching Univsion telenovelas on Dish, but might want to try viewing some Telemundo shows. Are any of them available with English language closed captions?

Gobluefan, yes, Telemundo has English captions for their telenovelas as long as your TV supports the option to choose CC3. (CC1 is Spanish subtitles.)

Eva

ah, but what a wonderful recap it is Juanita!

and thanks for putting in the bit of Marlene and Cinthia, I just wasn't getting what Marlene was implying.

and also thanks for Fabi's explanation of Frida Khalo, (interesting read about her in wiki, polio, bus accident, affair with Leon Trotsky after he fled from Stalin)

and Virginia put Enrique on a 'diet', as she tells the girls, so now he has gone home to clean up his place so she can move in.

loved the scene where Luis pulls out his checkbook, and Robert hands him a pen, which he drops, and uses his own.

SpanProf- I too noticed Andy was having a hard time lugging Adri to his car and looking macho about it.

and interesting about Melchor Ortega.

Eva

Juanita, that recap was stellar! So many great lines. Loved “telenovela chloroformed handkerchief” and the “invisibility cloak”. Also got a kick about the True Love, Andy style. And, they are dripping with foreshadowing about Armando’s demise. I agree with your hearing the distant clang of an anvil when he tells Fabiola he’ll always be there for her. I get the sense that Jorge Luis enjoys the chance to be a good guy once in a while. He’s charming with his daughters lately.

They sure are making a final with Pablo and Eva together look very doubtful. Or maybe they’re trying to be modern, Telemundo style. In Uni novels the hero NEVER willingly beds another woman, unless he thinks his True Love died or is drugged by the villana.

Wow, Marlene doesn’t even try to appear decent anymore! It was chilling when she hinted that Cinthia would die if the Monteverdes didn’t pay up for her part in the killing of Pancho.

I hope we get to see more of Vanessa Bauche (Soraya) in other Telemundo novelas. I looked her up, and it appears she hasn’t done that much work in TN’s. She was in the excellent (if disturbing) Mexican movie Amores Perros in 2000. I saw it twice and am not sure which character she played, perhaps the love interest of the Gael García Bernal character.

Virginia and Enrique are muy cute [I’ve actually heard Spanish speakers use that phrase.] together.

Oh, Camila, why did you have to tell Andy you saw him schlep the body? The smart, non-telenovela-actor move would have been to play along, tell him she loved him, and look for a chance to run.

Robert is blind. He keeps calling Luis an idiot. But that idiot pulled Panchopan out of the ditch (with Soraya’s help, of course).

Esclava

This novela is gripping! Thanks, deb. Fine recap! I don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep up watching two TN’s a night, but I definitely will be catching up on La Esclava Blanca on the weekends.

I have never liked Trinidad, even when his tender side was shown with Remedios. He might be the one to put a spoke in the whole escape plan because of his obvious racism.

Seeing Francisco beaten and branded sure was satisfying, wasn’t it? He’s going to go ballistic when he finds out where Ana is recovering. I’m suspecting they’re going with Ana and Felipe falling for each other. When the novela began I thought they’d go with Ana being obsessed with Miguel. She seemed that way. It was probably just a desperate need to be around a man who was kind.

Nicolás is cold as ice. It appeared to me that he realized Hilaria had kept some names of people involved in La Causa to herself. And that’s why she is going to be sold, despite her bond with his mother. He also got all of [can’t remember his name – the guy who’s in jail for contraband.] the slaves belonging to that guy, so he can now sell some of his for money since he has enough to work the hacienda.

I get the feeling that anything could happen. There are a lot fewer clichéd plot points in this one. I could never have predicted Catalina’s death. It’s got a Game of Thrones vibe in that bad things can happy to any of our characters. And wait until the real Marquesa shows up!

One of my favorite things is the transformation of Isabelita. She was such a brat at the beginning, and now she's delightful.

Eva

Muchísimas gracias, SpanProf, deb, and novelera, for your extremely gratifying responses to the recap and your terrific comments about the episode.

SpanProf, I love your description of Eva and Pablo "squabbling like a couple of middle schoolers." So true! And thanks for the very interesting info about the "real" Melchor Ortega. I too wonder what (if anything) the writers had in mind.

deb, I'm delighted to know that the recap helped you with some parts of the episode. As I think you know, your recaps do that a lot for me, and I'm very happy to have finally had a chance to return the favor.

novelera, I found your discussion of Pablo's sleeping with SweetFace fascinating. You're right about the unwritten telenovela rule--I just never thought about it. So now I'm wondering which of the two explanations you offer will turn out to be the right one: does Pablo's sleeping with SweetFace mean that he and Eva will not end up together, or is Telemundo taking a more modern approach to the tradition?

Esclava:
Trinidad has plenty of reasons to hate the whites who has been nothing but extremly inhuman to him so I give him a pass. They have been monsters who love torturing other human beings so from where he is standing all of them are devil incarnates and I agree. I am watching 400 years later and I want to skin them alive and pour acid on them. Horrid people. Now that I got that out of my system, thank you for the recap. Good for Hilaria, she was a suck up to Adela another "aunt Tom". It's good that Adela didn't lift a finger to help her now she will know what a witch her ama is. Sleep with dogs wake up with flees. Seeing Nicolas just pick whoever he pleases to sell had me in a rage and full of hate. Ouf, I need to meditate.
Romy

Esclava

thanks novelera, J and Romy.

the guy in jail is Damian Caicedo.

Trinidad is a bit thickheaded, but I wasn't thinking racist as more like white women are taboo has been beat into him, and if they escape with Victoria and Reme and are caught, they will receive the worst punishment ever, of course Miguel doesn't think they will be caught, and Trinidad can't erase his feelings for Reme.

Isabelita sure is a ray of sunshine, for all.

thanks for hanging in there Romy.

Esclava

I'm sorry if I offended anyone by calling Trinidad a racist. That's probably a bad choice of words. But he has been sort of a grumbling, angry presence the whole novela. You're probably right; he's entitled to be angry. But Miguel's anger is positive. His plans are good. Trinidad, not so much. And I really didn't like his spying on Victoria and Miguel with the same angry scowl on his face.

Esclava

Many thanks, deb, for this very helpful recap. I read it before I got to see the episode, and I'm very glad I did. It made several parts of the episode much clearer than they otherwise would have been.

One thing I still don't understand is why Trinidad responded so coldly to Remedios? Does he feel betrayed by her not telling him who she really is? That seems like a wholly unreasonable thing to expect under the circumstances. Is he no longer interested in her if she's not in some way connected to a marquesa? That too doesn't seem likely to me. But while I don't find these explanations persuasive, I'm at a loss to come up with a better one. It's true that I've missed some episodes, and perhaps Trinidad's behavior is explained by something in one of those that I missed, but....

Esclava

Juanita, I also wondered about Trinidad's behavior toward Remedios. I put it down to his excessive reaction to anything he perceives as a slight. If he were able to think it through, he would realize that having the information about Victoria and Remedios pretending to be people they aren't known at the hacienda would be potentially extremely dangerous for the two of them. But I guess it's always all about him. She didn't tell him the story herself, ergo she's a liar.

I didn't want Miguel to tell Trinidad the truth because I knew he wouldn't sympathize with Victoria and be hopeful she could pull off freeing them all. He never reacts in a positive way. Not sure if I remember this correctly, but didn't he want Miguel to kill Victoria when they kidnapped her? Maybe it was one of the other guys involved, not sure.

Esclava

thanks Juanita!

novelera, hmm, I think it was the other guy that pushed for killing Victoria, who was from another plantation, the one that chased her and got caught, while Miguel and Trinidad went back to Eden before anyone noticed they were gone (but Trinidad may have agreed)

I think Trinidad pretty much ran the show when Miguel first showed up and then became the favored slave, so they have been at odds from day 1, and Trinidad pretty much is against anything Miguel wants to do, like freeing Cuno, and given some time he usually comes around, but after seeing his softer side with Reme, I kind of like the guy, especially when he dishes it out to the bad guys like Morales.

Esclava

Thanks, deb. Glad to hear Trinidad didn't want to kill the person he thought was La Marquesa.

One thing that has been puzzling me is Victoria's escape plan. Boats have been mentioned. I even thought ocean was mentioned. If she said to where she planned to sail, I must have missed it. Surely not Spain.

Maybe from some conversations with Felipe and Catalina, I got the impression that slavery was legal in certain parts of Colombia and not in others. They kept talking about Antioquia (a region in Colombia) and I thought they said slavery was outlawed there. If anyone else remembers this better, please let me know.

So I'm wondering why Victoria, Miguel, and the rest of the folks at El Eden can't just take a land route to a place where slavery is not legal.

Yo tengo un pregunta. Why do the slaves refer to their masters as "amo" or "ama?"

ESCLAVA-

Elena- amo/a means owner/master/mistress. It is not related to the conjugation for amar (to love). Think ama de casa (housewife, literally mistress of the house) or ama de llaves (head housekeeper, mistress of the keys).

Esclava

I remember Victoria mentioned Mexico to Miguel, but I'm not sure why since other (closer) countries in South and Central America had also abolished slavery by then. I'm assuming it would be faster to go via water than land. I'm not sure if certain parts of Colombia had different laws for slavery, but maybe they just want to go to a different country where they know the laws are clear and they are definitely free.

Eva la trailera... epi 97, Wednesday
part 1

Esteban tells the girls about being stood up, and Eva figures it was Andy (that was fast).

Federica is with Martin and Diego when Pablo walks in with Ana, holding hands, Diego points out that novios hold hands, but Pablo and Ana downsize it to an experiment in being a couple, and too bad your father likes to go from one experiment to another, Federica adds, then takes a call from Virginia, they learn Camila has disappeared.

Marlene denies knowing any thing about the drivers death, says she needs loyal employees and needs him (his friend) for a job, and he says loyal employees get paid and get to live. Armando is listening.

Martin and Federica go to Eva's, he calls the police,

the next day he calls Pablo, Cami is still missing, stating the 48 hour rule for missing persons.

Diego at school tells Fabi about Pablo and Ana's experiment , no, they can't be together because he is with my mother, plus Fabi doesn't like doctors because the give you shots, no, she is not going to have a novio, and walks away, Diego promises he won't try any experiments.

at the office Pablo reflects on how unfair this is, Camila has already had a rough life, and she is special to Eva, he heads on over to help.

Andy sets Camila up and takes some pictures, then is off to see a guy who makes fake passports, (they are going to Europe via Mexico) while Camila breaks a bottle and cuts her wrists, er the ropes, and finally she is free, as Andy walks in the door, she makes a break for it, as he chases her around the neighborhood, free at last, except for Andy behind her, who grabs her and carries her back, but who are those people watching, and back at the warehouse they fight anew, Andy strangles her, Cami puts the broken bottle in his gut, he asks why, I love you, and Camila runs for it.

Armando argues with Marlene about cooling it with the special trips, do you want the police to raid Mon-Sol, as Marcos arrives, he wants to know where Andy is, he's wanted for kidnapping Camila as well as for the disappearance of Marta, Marlene hasn't seen him.

Pardo gets a call about a guy and girl fighting, tells Marcos she matches Camila's description so they check it out, find some blood.

a couple of guys at Mon-Sol are cleaning a trailer when one guy notices it's smaller on the inside and as they start investigating the still alive bad trucker (anyone know his name) kicks them out and shuts it up.

Enrique comes to get Virginia, he's got his place all cleaned up and is ready to take her home, she is so excited but no, I can't go now, till we find Camila, but Federica assures her she will keep her posted.

Virginia likes his small place, he suggests they celebrate with a drink and goes for a bottle of wine, as Virginia looks around and... who should appear but Enrique's ex, well not ex. since they never got divorced, (and we can hear the air rushing out the balloon in that relationship) as Enrique comes back, but someone left a cab standing at the curb with the engine running and Virginia is gone before he can explain,

as if Enrique has an explanation that is, his ex wants him back, besides she only cheated on him twice, which translates to her new boyfriend dumped her and she has come running home, well we are legally married she says, how about it?

Eva la trailera... epi 97, Wednesday
part 2

at Eva's they debate the Cami situation, (they don't need facts) maybe she went to him, nope, Eva is sure she was done with Andy, he must have forced her, Adri adds that she was done and turned him in, as Pablo comes to help and bloody Cami comes in the door, what did he do to you Eva asks, this is the second time she's stabbed someone but this time she thinks she killed him, Eva reassures her and gets her to calm down but Pablo thinks that Andy is not dead, Camila thinks she hurt him bad, he wanted to take her to Europe (Adri only got to go to Las Vegas), via Mexico, fake passports, and he said he didn't kill Marta.

Pablo wants to interrogate her more but the furies agree she needs a bath, and Eva jumps on Pablo for acting like a detective, didn't ask for his help, thinks he's using this as an excuse to get back together, as Marcos arrives and wants to see Camila.

Marcos tells Pablo that Andy may very well be dead from the amount of blood they found at the place he was keeping Camila.

meanwhile Andy has made it back to his and Rebeca's place where worried Marlene has been waiting, Rebeca says he needs to go to a hospital, but Marlene knows he's wanted, so Rebeca goes and bribes a doctor, he doesn't make house calls, she doubles the money, well ok.

and Virginia arrives, is happy to see Cami, will tell Eva what happened later, looks at Pablo and says all men are the same, lying unfaithful bastards.

Camila describes to Marcos and Pablo what happened, she stabbed him in the stomach with a broken bottle and it was stuck in him, they guess he is going to need a hospital, nope, doctor, so Marcos gets his guys tracking down all the unlicensed medicos.

touching scene between dying Andy and Marlene (maybe in another novela),

Eva calls Soraya to let her know Cami is safe, Esteban is thrilled and rushes off, but Noemi isn't (what is this a soap opera) and Soraya tells her there are lots of fish in the sea, Noemi asks, where are they?

The doc checks out Andy, there is nothing he can do, that is until he feels Rebeca's gun at the back of his head, and what the... did Marlene and Rebeca leave while he patched him up, because when he got done he tells Andy I am out of here, as far away from those two as I can get, and you are going to die anyway, and poof, he's gone.

Gusano and Elsa watch Andy in the news on tv (who watches the news at work) when Armando walks in looking for Marlene, and he sees Marlene's world is crumbling all around him, is this going according to his plan.

JJ and Marisol play at the office as Pablo comments he's glad things are working again for JJ, oops, are you giving out personal info about us, Marisol wants to know, and Ana appears, they are going out to dinner but Pablo takes JJ away for 5 minutes first on some business, which leaves officer Marisol alone with Ana, oh I get it now you kept the letter to Eva because you were dying to get in bed with Pablo, and talk about a getting your hand caught in the cookie jar look on Ana's face.

so Andy drags himself to his feet, grabs his gun and a shirt, and makes it out the door, did he forget his backpack? (money)

Thank you! I knew it couldn't possibly have anything to do with love, but I'd never seen that word before used in that context.

La Esclava Blanca – Wednesday, June 15 - Capítulo 40, part 1/2

Adela convinces Nicolas to sell Hilaria to the mines so that she can see her children, even if it means that she would die. It’s what she would want if she were in the same situation. She is crying. Nicolas accuses her of aflojandote con los años (softening/loosening up over the years).

Nicolas tells Victoria he’ll be back in a few days (he’s not going to the funeral) and that his mother will be in charge of the hacienda while he’s gone. She offers to take care of everything since Adela is sad about Hilaria but Nicolas says a Marquesa should not be in charge of the slaves.

Adela sheds another tear as the slaves are taken away. Trinidad thinks Adela got tired of Hilaria since slaves are just things to white people. Adela goes into her room, saying she is not going to the funeral because she has a dolor de cabeza (headache). Victoria remarks that it’s actually a dolor de alma (pain in her soul).

At Catalina’s funeral, Angela says some comforting words and Manuela sings as they put flowers on the coffin. Ya duerme la niña de sonrisa pura (the girl with the pure smile is sleeping now).

Nicolas gives Adela one last opportunity to tell him what she heard and saw, and he will take her back to El Eden. She claims she doesn’t know anything else. He accuses her of caring more about other slaves than her own children. She replies that todos somos negros (we are all black). He starts choking her, threatening to squeeze harder; she doesn’t care – it would be the best thing that could happen to her.

Victoria wants to leave before Nicolas has a chance to sell Miguel or Tomas or Milagros. She doesn’t want to eat, and neither does Isabel or Adela.

Remedios confronts Trinidad outside. He tells her he knows everything, and he’s upset that she didn’t tell her the truth before. She says her loyalty is to her friend and no one else. She returns the shell.

The buyer of the slaves complains that Hilaria is too old and she couldn’t work in the mines, but he’ll take her anyway for something else... At the last second, Nicolas decides not to sell her to him; he’ll sell her to someone else instead. She begs to go to the mines but he won’t allow it.

Victoria has gone down the tunnels by herself, without telling Remedios. The rocks start falling and she’s knocked down. Milagros and Reme are desperately trying to find out where she went. Luckily Adela is still sleeping, and they’ll just tell her and Isabel that Victoria went for a paseo (walk).

Julian wants to stop for a rest, but Nicolas won’t let them. He wants to sell Hilaria, calling her mugrienta (filthy) and floja (slow), and head back to El Eden cuanto antes (as soon as possible).

Eugenia needs to find money for the business deal with Alonso. She’s going to make the Marquesa an offer she can’t refuse.

Manuela is in a good mood, singing and serving lots of food to the doctor. She’s trying to make Gabriel jealous. Jesus asks if he’s talked to her yet. Recuerda que por los huecos del silencio se cuelan las ilusiones (remember that illusions slip through the gaps of silence). Gabriel changes the subject, saying he needs to go to work, and reminding him of what they committed themselves to night before. He leaves and Jesus tells Manuela to stop with the jealous stuff. Es increíble como el amor le quita la inteligencia a la gente más despejada (it’s amazing how love removes the intelligence of the smartest people).

Gabriel is a little upset that Manuela knows about their plan to help the slaves. She wants to be part of the causa now, even if it’s dangerous. They kiss.

La Esclava Blanca – Wednesday, June 15 - Capítulo 40, part 2/2

Isabel tries to get Adela to open her door and eat what Siervo prepared for her. She wonders if she’s died. Siervo says no, she‘s just sleeping. Ah, Isabel perks up, that means I have to receive my music teacher alone today. She sends Siervo back downstairs so she can get ready. Isabel runs into Victoria’s room and starts snooping around. She takes a small chest.

Reme, Milagros, and Tomas are looking for Victoria. Reme thinks she knows where she is. Victoria is trapped in the tunnel with a huge rock on her leg. She calls for help. Tomas lowers himself into the pit, not entirely sure if she’s down there.

The General and Alonso talk about Francisco and his strange behavior. They know Ana has left him, Garcia is missing, and he doesn’t want anything to do with slaves anymore. Alonso is really suspicious of Francisco, but the General doesn’t know how to hacer encajar todas estas fichas (make all these pieces fit together). Yet, if anyone knows what happened, it’s Ana.

Tomas comes back out of the pit. It was too dark to see anything and he didn’t hear anything either.

Trinidad buys a bollo de yuca (mashed cassava wrapped in corn husks) from another slave selling them in the fields. She tells him that no one knows about other tunnels or pits. He gives the info to Miguel, Candela, and Enith. Miguel says they have to wait until Nicolas gets back before they can start acting up to get punished and sent to the pit. They all notice he called him Nicolas instead of amo. Trinidad warns Miguel that Nicolas would probably kill him instead of punishing him if he acted out again.

Hilaria falls down, exhausted. Nicolas kicks her and tells Julian to help her so she doesn’t die and so he won’t lose money on the sale.

Gabriel arrives at El Eden. Siervo walks him in, and Isabel arrives dressed in (Victoria’s?) yellow dress, jewelry, and makeup. She seems to trip on her shoe.

Manuela is jealous/annoyed that Gabriel went to his lesson with Isabel. Jesus thinks she should focus her attention on the doctor since he’s actually available, unlike Gabriel, a quién no veo para nada convencido de estar contigo (who I do not see at all convinced of being with you).

Gabriel wants to get Adela or the Marquesa, but neither are available. Isabel sends Siervo to get some food and drinks. Isabel asks Gabriel if he noticed how she’s changed. Now she says please to the slaves and she has realized they are people too!

Miguel is wondering why Victoria hasn’t come out to the fields yet. Enith thinks she doesn’t care about the slaves. Reme arrives with the lemonade, and tells Miguel Victoria is missing. She tells the guard that the Marquesa ordered Miguel to the house.

Siervo brings food to Isabel and she says thank you. Gabriel almost laughs when she points it out to him. Things are changing and she hopes to eventually convince Nicolas to let Miguel have a place in the house. Gabriel wants to know if he’ll let her go the inn to watch him play music during a fiesta with the slaves. No, he would never allow that. So Gabriel suggests bringing the fiesta to her at El Eden. She jumps up to hug him, just as Adela walks by. Adela belittles Isabel’s look, saying she looks espantosa (atrocios). Tú no tienes un espejo en el cuarto? (Don’t you have a mirror in your room?)

Isabel won’t come out of her room. Adela tells Gabriel he can only come back when Nicolas is there and she’ll let him know when that is. Adela prays that God will help Hilaria, but she’s interrupted by Eugenia’s visit. Adela tries to get rid of her since Nicolas isn’t there, but Eugenia wants to talk to the Marquesa (and she won’t tell Adela what she wants to talk to her about). Adela orders Siervo to get her.

Miguel is going into the pit by himself. Milagros and Reme need to go back to the house and pretend like everything is normal, covering for Victoria if they need to. He crawls through the hole with a torch, and we see Victoria still lying on the ground with her torch next to her.

Deb, your recap was a gem! I have a busy day at work so can't write much of a comment. But I loved all the funny bits in the recap.

So Andy is guaranteed to die by the black market doctor (funny how the bad guys always find one of those in time of need). And he manages to get up off his death sofa (no beds in this cheap hideaway Marlene arranged?) to what? try to kill Camila?

Eva was really out of place criticizing Pablo for showing up out of concern for Camila, thinking it was a get-her-back ploy.

I suspect Marisol's calling out Doctora SweetFace over the letter will go nowhere.

Esclava

J, you really write well, like a screenwriter. I can see what is happening again as I read your recaps.

While I'm sure Miguel will get Victoria out of the tunnel, I can't imagine how they're going to explain her injury to Nicolás.

How much more despicable can Nicolás become? Everyone has to bend to his will or suffer the consequences. Maybe we should start a list of ways he can be finished off. A quick death is too good for him. Burned up like he burned the Quinteros?

Eva

Another superlative recap, deb! Many thanks!

I loved some of your snarky asides, especially "he wanted to take her to Europe (Adri only got to go to Las Vegas)," "(what is this a soap opera)," and "talk about a getting your hand caught in the cookie jar look on Ana's face."

I also loved Federica's remark that it's too bad Pablo likes to go from one experiment to another so quickly.

So were there only cobardes on the street when Andy chased after Camila and caught her?

I'm tempted to put in a good word for the doctor who treated Andy. It's true that he was persuaded when Rebeca doubled the payment offer, but to be fair, he did at first say not only that he doesn't make housecalls but also that at the hospital they would have all the needed equipment and medicine, whereas in a private setting that wouldn't be true, and with a gravely wounded person, this might well be critical. (Besides, if the doctor watches telenovelas, he knows about the very low survival rate for doctors hired by or for criminals, especially for work outside a hospital.

One more thing: though I almost always agree with novelera's remarks, I'm not sure that Marisol's calling out Doctora SweetFace over the letter she failed to turn over to Eva will go nowhere. Marisol doesn't seem to be the sort of person who just let's things drop, especially a deathbed letter written by her best friend Betty and deliberately withheld for selfish reasons.

Eva

Juanita, I agree that eventually Marisol will force the issue about the letter and be successful. I just think it's too soon for Doctora Sweetface to be revealed as having schemed her way into Pablo's life. I'm a hardened veteran of telenovela fake-outs and have been disappointed too many times by end-of-episode amazing breakthroughs that collapse like a house of cards the next evening.

Esclava

J, amazing how your recaps are so perfect!

my recorder chops things up a bit, including the captions, so I followed along with your summary to fill in the pieces.

wow, Victoria is always going out on a limb, I like how Reme can spot her look when she is about to do something and correctly assumed that she was in the pit, (but the rope should have been in the pit and the hole to the tunnel uncovered, so she could get back out).

that Nicolas, he is way to clever and always one step ahead, I'm so glad Hilaria didn't talk, he would have never taken her back to Eden, and did he not sell her to the mines because the guy had an easier job for her, he wants her suffering/dead, but he wants to profit as well.

and what is Eugenia up to, she noticed the look between Victoria and Miguel at the trial, right? and she is like Nicolas, she plays all sides.

we went to etapa crucial,

Eva. Excellent recap, deb. I second novelera and Juanita, and also liked "Someone left a cab with the engine running..." Wha-a-a-a-t? Enrique's wife picks this moment to return? Besides, she deserted him. It should be very easy for him to get a divorce, contested or not. It bothered me too that there was no one around when the patched-up Andy left with the gun. What happened to Rebeca and Marlene, who were supposedly looking out for him? It almost looks as if a scene was cut. Now he's going to be out there with septicemia hanging over him as a death sentence (oh yes, much better than risking a prison term by being hooked up to an antibiotic iv in a hospital), and out for revenge--presumably against Camila. Looks as if he may make it into últimas semanas after all--perhaps dropping dead of the blood poisoning just as he's about to pull the trigger on Camila? The nice thing about the otherwise-cowardly witnesses is that they make it very clear that Camila was kidnapped. On a positive note, Marisol and JJ are still very cute together, and between the 2 of them have both Pablo's and Ana's number, so to speak.

Esclava: The villains always having the upper hand!

Disgusts me!

Esclava

I thought the slave buying guy WAS going to send Hilaria to the mines. Nicolás intervened, seeing she wanted that and remembering his mother having said that Hilaria wanted to go to the mines to see her sons, if only for as long as she'd be able to live under those conditions. He may have had two reasons for stopping that destiny for Hilaria. One could be punishing her for not having given him more La Causa names by thwarting her desire to see her children. And, he tried one more time after he and Julian left the slave market with her to get her to implicate more people.

Eva

thanks guys!

I'm finding these recaps harder and harder to do because the storylines are all so fragmented and filled with trivia,

anyway, I was wondering what it is that's keeping Pablo and Eva apart, and...

I keep coming up with nothing,

Ana, Rey, and Armando are inconsequential, and it comes down to Eva being annoyed that Pablo has his own life coupled with a fear that being younger he won't return her love, while Pablo is tired of constantly being rejected by a woman that does not need him.

and Marlene has backed off because Eva is pushing back bringing the police and Armando has put the two girls off limits, but why is Rebeca not following through with her revenge?

Esclava

true novelera, and Nicolas is a complicated guy, so I'm thinking he knew all about Hilaria and her kids when he brought her there, partly as a gesture to his mother and as a way to get rid of her as both he and the buyer agreed that she wouldn't be able to cut it in the mines, the buyer didn't really want her but at the last minute said he had something else in mind for her, is when Nicolas decided not to sell her, I think he wants her to suffer/die for not coughing up the other names, plus she is a loose end that could get back to Miguel that he is on to them, odd that he just doesn't kill her himself as he is not happy extending his trip.

Esclava

J, I did get to watch last night's episode, and I think you've done your usual amazing job of vividly capturing what took place. Many thanks!

The actor who plays Nicolas in Esclava played a traitor in La Reina del Sur. When Teresa realizes that he has been betraying her, she takes him out into her yacht and shoots him. Frankly, though, I think such a quick death would be too good for Nicolas. I have a hard time imagining an appropriate ending for him. Perhaps there is none.

Esclava

You're welcome for the recap! Isabel was adorable in this episode. Nicolas, ugh, he is so despicable. I hope he doesn't die because I want him to suffer for a very long time. Throw him in the pit and force feed him so he can't die unless it's of old age!

great recapps I am so glad to have found this site, hilaria was betrayed for all her misguided loyalty!!!
