General

thanks Juanita,

as someone mentioned earlier, it looks like there will be NO primetime novelas on Friday night.

General

Thanks very much, deb, for confirming this. I don't think I was the one who mentioned it earlier, but I HAD noticed that zap2it had some strange programming substituting for all the evening telenovelas this Friday (because it's the start of the July 4th weekend?). I thought of noting this on today's Telemundo page, but I decided to wait to get confirmation and then post it on the Thursday page.

Esclava Blanca

I noticed the Telemundo Now app on my phone says all of the episodes of Esclava Blanca will only be available until July 15, which I think might be the day of the gran final (or perhaps July 14 if they do a 2 hour finale). Does anyone know how quickly they take down episodes of non-Telemundo productions from the website? I'm a little paranoid that I will miss the final episode...

Eva

Just a brief reminder that I will not be able to do recaps this week.

EVA – LUNES – Parte 1 de 3

We begin where we left off Friday. Pablo hands Eva the letter Betty wrote that Dra. Sweetface had kept from both of them for a long time in telenovela time. Most of the episode consisted of the long back and forth between Eva and Pablo. It was like a good tennis match in which you’re never sure on which side match point will land.

Eva: “So the letter really exists.” Pablo tells her that Ana had found it in the room where Betty died and kept it. He says he read it because he wanted to know why Ana had concealed it.

Marlene has a big argument with one of her last allies after getting the call from Elsa demanding money to keep quiet. Silva tells her that she should leave the country. [And rob Viewerville of her downfall! I don’t think so.] He elaborates, telling her there are too many open police cases that involve she and her brother. He says that, if Andy is captured, he’ll serve many years in prison. And she won’t get off scot free either. Her response: She leans forward obstinately and says Yo soy Marlene Palacios. She goes on to say she has many things to finish up here in Los Angeles. When Silva says he’s getting his $$ together so as to leave, she defaults to insults, her go-to position with anyone who doesn’t get in line. She calls him a rat deserting the ship.

JJ tells Marisol about his evidence that Silva is up to his eyebrows with the cartel to which El Norteño belongs.

Marlene calls Andy. He doesn’t pick up. He’s downing shots in the same sleazy bar he and Rebeca have been in before. He’s brooding over the rejection by Camila. Rebeca offers to buy him some drugs to cheer him up.

We see more of Diego’s fear of abandonment by his grandfather. Diego starts to blame his leaving on Federica, but she’s very good at reassuring him, saying that one of the things she loves most about Martín is what a good father and grandfather he is. Diego appears to be mollified.

Eva reads the letter. She tells Pablo it’s very sad and that she regrets Betty’s death. Pablo: “Maybe after reading this you can understand why I married her. She fought so hard for her life. Eva says she forgives Betty with her whole heart. With some bitterness Eva says that Pablo never let her be around Cecilia. Pablo: But now you can! He says that Betty always knew that sooner or later they’d get back together.

When Andy goes to the Men’s to ingest his drugs, the bartender approaches Rebeca and tells her that “they” are after her. She thinks he means the police, but he tells her that the guys working for El Norteño are also looking for her. They know that she arranged Melchor’s murder in prison and attempted to kill Florentino. He says there’s a huge price on her head.

Eva tells Pablo she saw him that very day kissing La Doctorcita. He says that they still love each other despite all the misunderstandings. She says it’s not the first time she’s seen him kissing her. She tells him to admit it; there’s another woman in his life. Pablo says that he tried to love someone else but it didn’t work. He still loves Eva.

EVA – LUNES – Parte 2 de 3

Rebeca is finally looking scared and hustles Andy out, especially after seeing two scary looking guys come in.

Eva tells Pablo they should look at this with a cool head. She says his style of love is certainly original. 1. “You say you love me, but you married another woman so SHE wouldn’t suffer.” 2. “You rejected me when, according to you, you needed me the most.” 3. “You say you love me but you found another woman before your wife’s body was cold. And surely you’re sleeping with her. Where do I fit into this grand love that was for everyone except me?” Pablo looks chastened.

Fajardo shows Luis Florentino in his hospital bed, saying that Soraya recognized him. He ticks off the suspicious things: that the two guys were in prison with Andy and that they both worked for Mon-Sol. After they leave the room, Florentino appears to wake up.

Pablo defends himself. He says that he sought out Ana because she’s a fine woman and she’s fond of my children. But he mostly turned to her because he was lonely. He said he’d tried so many times to approach her but only got rejection after rejection. He says it’s been difficult to love her. She’s like a mountain that he tries to climb and each time he almost reaches the summit, he can’t. He says he got tired. He wanted to stop loving her. He admits looking for another woman. He screwed up. But he never stopped loving her.

Marlene is chewing out her compinches at the odd motel. She’s furious they’re out and about showing their faces. Andy says the ones who are really pursuing them are her murder victims! [Andy’s drugs must have contained a truth serum.] He tells Marlene the way they’ll really find them is because she keeps visiting them. But we find out at the police station that she slipped away from the cops watching her.

Marlene tells Rebeca that her big idea to kill Javier and leave Elsa alive ruined everything. She orders her to find Elsa and kill her. Rebeca: “Didn’t you just heart the part about the cartel looking for me to kill me?” Marlene: “That’s your problem! Elsa threatened ME.” Still giggling about everything Andy applauds his sister’s monumental selfishness while looking at Rebeca.

Eva tells Pablo she doesn’t doubt that he loves her, but her heart has been broken before a few times by him. She asks why he can’t see she’s terrified. She tells him her life has been hard. Now she has to concentrate on her children and on her friends. He tells her all he wants to do is get old and wrinkled by her side. [Probably not the best choice of words.] Eva says that this will happen sooner for her. She isn’t willing to watch him fall for someone younger down the road. She says she could not bear to have her heart broken again. He says she would never leave her, but she says she’s too full of scars and she’s lost faith in love.

EVA – LUNES – Parte 3 de 3

Marlene tells Rebeca that Elsa called her from a land line. She’s going to find out from where and Rebeca is to go there.

Eva tells Pablo she’s not ready to start over again. Once more she enumerates the many virtues of Ana. She gives him a tender kiss with tears running down her face. She tells him that, even though she’s destroyed inside, she’s saying goodbye to him.

Pablo finally gives up and comes out of the house to find Armando approaching. Armando asks what the blazes Pablo is up to with his woman. He tells him he knows he has someone else (Ana). They get into a fistfight in the front yard. Eva calls 911 to get them arrested!

Cinthia again shows up, in the bag, to rag on Soraya.

Ana shows up to apologize to Eva for not giving her the letter. Eva tells her “all’s fair in love and war”. She says she’s tired of Pablo and his other women. She says that the letter changes nothing and that Pablo is all hers (Ana’s). Dra. SweetFace says she wants a man who really loves her the way Pablo loves Eva. She doesn’t want to be a consolation prize. Eva tells her to think carefully about this. Men like Pablo are thin on the ground.

Luis comes home to find Cinthia there. She insists they had nothing to do with Pancho’s death (although she calls him naco chorizero) She begs him on his knees to believe her. Luis has nothing left for the woman who raised him. He tells Esteban to escort her out.

Pablo and Armando are in the same cell. Armando mentions piojos (lice) and later Pablo mentions pulgas (fleas). Armando gets a good line, asking a cop on the way out if they don’t have enough money to fumigate. The night before Martín refused to come and bail Pablo out, saying he deserves to be there for immaturity.

Rey is telling his troubles to the bartender [in a much nicer joint than the one Rebeca and Andy were drinking in] about Eva saying they’d be only friends. And who comes in but Dra. SweetFace. Reynaldo recognizes her. They both realize they’ve lost out on the one they love and share a drink.

Eva thanks JJ for the information on Silva and says she’ll present it to Fajardo.

Eva

wow novelera, you sure shined a light on this broken record of Pablo and Eva, and you brought a lot of color to their story, what a wonderful job you did.

elsewhere,

"Silva tells her (Marlene) that she should leave the country. [And rob Viewerville of her downfall! I don’t think so.] ha!

ok, were we all together when we were looking for Florentino's finger move.

"He (Pablo) tells her all he wants to do is get old and wrinkled by her (Eva) side. [Probably not the best choice of words.]" ha!

loved it when Eva called 911 on Armando and Pablo, they had me scratching my head for lice by the end of the show.

something about tonight's show, I really got where Eva is coming from (and what a wonderful actress Edith González is) her down in the dirt, school of hard knocks, talk with Ana, cut her to the bone, but true, and Pablo be gone, he didn't toe the line.

Esclava

was there a scene which wasn't screaming,
what could go wrong here?

Eva

Novelera, since my West Coast granddaughters had to take a later plane, I was able to see last night's episode. And since the granddaughters are still asleep, I was able to read your magnificent recap. I enjoyed all your parenthetical asides, such as " [And rob Viewerville of her downfall! I don’t think so.]," "[Andy’s drugs must have contained a truth serum.]," and " [Probably not the best choice of words.]." I also loved your great description of the long back and forth discussion between Pablo and Eva: "It was like a good tennis match in which you’re never sure on which side match point will land." Perfect!

And yes, deb, I think we were probably all together expecting Florentino's finger to move. OTOH, the writers fooled us once bafore, so I wasn't as confident as I had been the first time. I wonder whether he woke up before or after Fajardo's discussion.

So are Rey and SweetFace going to Find True Love? They've got less than two weeks to do so. But, of course, telenovela time differs from ours.

And if Rey and SF do become a couple, does that clear the way for Pablo and Eva or just send some misleading clues to Viewerville?

Eva. Great recap, and you're certainly in excellent form today, novelera! I second deb's comments and add that I really liked "for a long time in telenovela time," "good tennis match,"and "Andy applauds his sister's monumental selfishness." Marlene as always is arrogant, entitled and over-confident. Diego and Federica end up being very sweet together--as my brother John's 2nd wife says: Children can always use an extra grandmother. In this case, Federica may be Diego's only grandmother. Whoa! Rebeca is the target of El Norteño! Maybe she has finally bitten off more than she can chew, and she had better hope that the police get to her first. Eva has a point with Pablo! But calling 911 is possibly a little harsh. We find out that Ana has a sensible attitude about Pablo--if he can't truly love her, she doesn't want him. I think Rey and she will make a good couple. I love the way Florentino comes out of his coma in true telenovela style--first the little finger, then the eyelids. Wonder how long before someone notices.

Eva. We must have been writing at the same time, Juanita. Enjoy your granddaughters' visit! We will miss your comments for the duration!

EVA:

YOU GO,GIRL!!!!!!
I just what to say how happy I was to hear, Eva, give Pablo the BREAKDOWN' and it went like this:
[1] oh.!you love me?!?!, but you scr**ed around, and had a kid with Betty!,
[2] Oh ,you love me! but you lived with and then married the heifer!
[ [3] oh,so you love me ,so much!! but you lived with crazy town and you lied about her madness !the broad was 'cray-cray'insane!![the chick was borderline]

[5]you messin with the doctor and your wife's body ,ain't even cold in the ground!![ that was ON the money-honey!!]
[6] this letter, yea ?, what about it?, Betty left a whole lot of slickness out!!?? ....maybe a true confession on betty's [real /unselflish /remoseful] part that would have included some clarification of how she was duplicit/complicit !!you know ,some information to the cops that could have at least ,set marlene toward jail time ot at least indictment!!

This was a refreshing break from the usual soap opera schizo logic , we have been fed over the decades!!
Clear /real/ too darn true and honest !!!modern take off/conversation, like real people talk ,real life conversation not soap opera 'B.S.'....LOVED IT!!

La Esclava Blanca – Monday, June 27 – Capítulo 48/61, part 1/2

Adela yells at Milagros for breakfast, finds out that Bunme isn’t working because she’s not well, then yells at Bunme.

Nicolas gives Victoria a necklace that belonged to his first wife. He sees that she’s already wearing a necklace; she calls it a baratija (trinket) while he calls it porquería (junk/trash) and takes it off of her.

Adela whips Bunme’s hands with branches/leaves as punishment. Victoria runs over to stop her, and Nicolas actually orders Adela to stop. He allows Bunme to rest for a few more hours.

Eugenia cries and drinks alone. Someone knocks at the door. She calls for Bunme, then remembers. It’s Alonso, who knows that she stole Nicolas’ cargo since hers was the exact weight (she’s not such a smart thief, is she?). She tries to throw him out, but he has brought some men with him to take the machine. More yelling and insults. She thought he was a caballero (gentleman); he thought she was a dama (lady).

Paca informs Felipe that Ana isn’t feeling well and won’t be joining him for breakfast. He asks if something happened while he was out getting the gunpowder. Apparently Paca tells him, and he talks to Ana, who says she’ll just not go to church anymore, to avoid habladurías (gossip/nasty remarks). Felipe is annoyed at the people who pretend to be religious and say one thing but do another. (We see a scene of women waiting in line to see Lorenza; Abdul is happy with the money he’s making. Probably the same women who were at the church harassing Ana.)

Everyone is preparing for Isabel’s party at El Eden, while others are packing up the gunpowder for the tunnel. Tomas tells Victoria he needs to be the one to set the explosives off, since he’s the only one with experience in doing it. She agrees reluctantly.

Miguel delivers food and water to Siervo, with Julian still guarding the pit.

The gunpowder crew is stopped by soldiers on the way to El Eden. Manuela is able to stop them from looking through all the crates by singing and dancing. The General and Alonso ride up, also on their way to the party. The General admonishes the soldiers for dancing with Manuela and wonders what Gabriel is doing there. Alonso says he’s happy to see him. The General mentions gunpowder and Jesus and Gabriel act a tiny bit suspicious, but he was referring to powder for the fireworks that the Marquesa asked him to bring. They will continue together to the party.

Isabel talks highly of Victoria to Remedios, happy that she’s there and hoping that she never leaves.

Victoria is taking her time getting ready. Remedios reminds her that she needs to act like a devoted wife and noble Marquesa, but only for a little while longer.

Abdul complains to Lorenza about her not being ready to go to El Eden yet. She asks why he’s so ansioso (anxious); he claims he doesn’t like to arrive late. He insists on her wearing the veil to cover her face.

Adela is yelling again. Tomas remarks that she parece una yegua a punto parir (sounds like a mare about to give birth). Milagros packs up some herbs for Adela to stop her from making such un alboroto (racket/fuss). Adela is in the bath. She asks about Bunme (calling her Bunma again), and says she doesn’t want her in the house. She’s going to send her to the fields. She closes her eyes while Milagros washes her arm. Milagros spits on the cloth and wipes it on her. (Ha!)

The abbot tells his workers to keep giving food and wine to Morales since he is their as en la manga (ace up the sleeve). They need to make sure that Nicolas keeps sending them money for keeping him there. Morales hears them as he pretends to sleep.

The General arrives at El Eden with a box full of chicks as a present for Isabel. The musicians arrive and start unloading the tools and gunpowder into the pit.

Bunme drinks some alcohol and Candela catches her. Candela tries to talk some sense into her; at El Eden, she is nothing more than a slave so she had better forget her past.

Tomas stays in the pit with all the gunpowder.

La Esclava Blanca – Monday, June 27 – Capítulo 48/61, part 2/2

The General asks Nicolas if he has heard from Francisco lately. No, he lies, we are no longer in contact.

Francisco gets ready to kill Morales. At the frenicomio, Morales gets the patients to start a fight so he can break a pot and grab a sharp piece.

Isabel makes her entrance at the party. The General is already drunk. Isabel says kind words about Victoria and all her preparations and decorations for the party. Adela walks away annoyed. Where is the Marquesa, Alonso asks.

Victoria still hasn’t gone outside. She’s nervous/scared/ worried about everything. Remedios finished getting ready and they go out with Milagros. Trinidad is smitten with Remedios and how pretty she looks. She allows him to accompany her. Miguel comes up to Victoria; Isabel requested that he be at the party. They kiss quickly before scurrying off to the party.

Felipe arrives at the party. Drunk General is happy to see that Felipe and Nicolas limaron sus asperezas (mended fences/smoothed things over). He asks about Ana, assuming that Felipe is helping her go back to Francisco. Felipe seems amused at the old drunk, remarking that Ana makes her own decisions. When the General says her husband should make serious decisions about her life, Felipe responds that she wouldn’t have a life in that case.

Isabel tells Adela she is no longer Isabelita, as she drinks more than a sip.

Victoria finally arrives at the party. Miguel looks way too angry; Felipe tells him this is not the place to show his emotions and Nicolas will pay eventually. Los arrogantes solamente miran para abajo, por eso no se dan cuenta de lo que les viene encima (The arrogant only look down, that’s why they don’t realize what’s coming from above). Nicolas spots them talking.

Morales has blood all over his shirt. When someone comes in to check on him, he strangles him to death.

Back at the party, the Padre says a prayer in Latin while everyone stands together. Miguel sneaks off.

The abbot counts money and puts it in a box. Morales bloody arm appears and snaps it shut. He looks angrier and crazier than ever.

Tomas and Siervo prepare the powder in the tunnel.

Francisco arrives at the frenocomio. Morales runs through the jungle. Francisco finds the abbot dead, with the shard sticking out of his neck.

Finally the prayer is over. The real party can begin, Isabel exclaims.

Miguel shows up in the tunnel while Tomas and Siervo are waiting. Are you sure they won’t miss you, Siervo wonders. Miguel thinks everything will be fine.

On the carriage, Lorenza tells Abdul that she thinks olujimi (or ologimi, it’s spelled differently every time!) is not a thing but a person, a little girl. She saw her in a dream; she was a pretty white girl. Maybe she was her former master’s daughter. Abdul gets annoyed again; why do you keep thinking about your past; is your present with me really that bad? Lorenza apparently feels sorry, and kisses his shoulder.

Isabel starts the music and dancing. Candela and Trinidad dance with her. Obviously not dancing, Adela remarks to the Padre that it’s a scandal but the Padre sees nothing wrong with it since music and dance come from God too. He’s tired of Adela (oh aren’t we all...) so he leaves. Victoria runs off to catch up with him.

Isabel tries to dance with Gabriel; Manuela dances in between them. She tries to get Nicolas to dance but he won’t, so she asks the drunk General, who obliges. Trinidad and Remedios smiles at each other. When she leaves, he dances away to follow her.

Victoria knows the Padre is avoiding her because he feels guilty for not helping her. She thanks him for saving her life by sending her to Spain, and also for not saying who she was in front of everyone because it helped her find her destiny. The Padre doesn’t know what’s she referring to. Victoria confidently responds: Ahora quiere hablar. Pues, hagalo con su consciencia si es que tiene. (Now you want to talk. Well, do it with your conscience if you have one).

Eva

I'll put up a bare bones recap tonight.

J: The Padre should be GUILTY for not helping Victoria!

Esclava

Terrific recap, J. You got it all! I missed Milagros putting her spit on Adela. Yay! I can't stand Adela.

I thought Bunme stayed in bed because Nicolás was so rough with her sexually. I kept expecting her to tell Milagros or Victoria why she didn't get up to work.

I remember now that Tomás said something about having worked in the mines at one time and thus knew how to use explosives safely.

It makes me gag the way these ghastly men, the General, the Priest, all insist that Ana has to be re-united with the abuser. If this happened in the 20th or 21st century they could have taken a photograph of her injuries.

Can't say I'm sorry that Crooked Abbot is history. I suppose Morales is somehow trying to find Victoria. Surely he's not stupid enough to come see Nicolás. He did overhear that they had to protect him from being killed, didn't he?

Esclava

thanks J, wonderful recap!

was Morales whole thing to make it right with Nicolas is to kill the girl? Yikes!

Esclava Blanca

Steve, I really hope the padre redeems himself in the end and helps Victoria prove that she is the heir.

Yes, novelera, I also thought Bunme wasn't well because of what Nicolas did to her, and that's why Nicolas allowed her to rest longer (because he knew he was the reason).

It is difficult to listen to the men talk about Ana obeying her husband. Makes me sick.

Morales did tell Nicolas he wanted to finish the job of killing Victoria, but maybe now he wants revenge on Nicolas for keeping him locked up. My first thought was that he escaped to go after Nicolas. Who knows how crazy he really is at this point.

ESCLAVA:

Thank you so much, J. This was very much a set up episode, and tense. So the plotters looked way too nervous. Is was sure Nicolas and others would catch on. Morales is so crazy so there's no telling what he'll do.

EVA – MARTES

Two weeks have passed.

In this episode: Universe 100…Marlene 0

Armando and Marlene are packing to leave their happy home. He informs her he’s not going to the apartment she rented, but to a hotel.

Fajardo grabs up Silva. He tells him the FBI anti-narco squad wants to question him.

The hip-hop artist shows up to buy the house.

Folks at Casa Furias are saying they’re going to miss this house [?] Eva tells Evencio what a great guy he is and that the house is all his. He cries.

Papers are signed at Casa Montes. Armando takes the big check out to El Norteño in his big black SUV. EN is pleased, but sorry to lose Mon-Sol as a “partner”. He tells Armando that Marlene is crazy and more dangerous than a coral snake. He advises him to get away from her.

Elsa sees Rebeca coming from the balcony of her hotel and escapes. Rebeca gets into her room [how?] and is furious. Later Elsa calls Marlene and tells her she’s given a letter to the police to be opened in case she dies. [Isn’t that usually a lawyer who gets such a letter?]

The hip-hop guy turns out to be Esteban. He opens the door to Soraya and Adriana. Adriana is taking lots of gloating cell phone pictures, especially of Marlene’s face.

Big whoop! Florentino woke up, but flat lines before Fajardo can get there to question him. He doesn’t die though.

Eva shows up with the rest of the Furias. Esteban gives her the keys. Eva tells Marlene she doesn’t have any money but Soraya and Federica do. Holding the keys in her hand she tells Marlene that, if this is too much for her, she can hang herself. She promises she won’t interfere this time! Rey and Martín show up with champagne and a party gets started. Armando looks on with a faint smile.

The cops grill Silva, but they haven’t proven any crimes yet. They did freeze his accounts.

Not sure what’s going on with Pablo and Ana. It sort of seemed like a “we’ll be friends” conversation, but I’ve given up trying to predict how this one will turn out.

Armando delivers Marlene to the apartment. He tells her he knows she went after him. He tells her it was great sex, but that’s it. She tells him that the two of them fell in love. Armando practically laughs in her face. He tells her he only ever loved Eva.

Noemi tells Soraya she wants to return to work for Eva, especially since she won’t have to see Esteban there.

Martín moves out after an emotional scene with Diego.

Adriana is pregnant, just as Soraya predicted.

Eva says the first thing she’s going to do is have Virginia’s wedding here.

Marlene is aghast finding out they’ve lost another client. She fears bankruptcy. Armando tells her he’s going to dedicate what remains of his life to giving Eva back what they took from her. And Marlene is going to end up with nothing. She pulls a gun on him.

EVA

Hi everybody!!

Well, the tide seems to be turning here and, am I alone in thinking that.... the next little while is going to be SOOOOOOO fun???

I've always marveled at the people that bitch and whinge and moan and lament how- in the early stages of a novela, the bad guys 'always keep on winning'. I've never understood this. I've always placed my trust in the genre and figured that (unlike life, it must be said)- all WILL work out in the end. To that extent, I WANT my villains to be the most odious, despicable pieces of scum imaginable. I WANT my heroes to be scourged and flayed alive... because it will make THEM, their ultimate triumph, and the 'castigo' of those responsible for their pain ALL THE MORE SWEET! And HERE, I must ask.... (and, before saying this- full credit to Erika de la Rosa, the worthy heir to the title of 'villana sans pareil' held heretofore by Catherine Siachoque and Maritza Rodriguez), WHEN did we last see a novela with a villana as magnificently EVIL as Marlene Palacios here?? There isn't even any need for a male villain to contribute to the wickedness (I'm thinking Guillermo Garcia Cantu's 'Fernando Escandon' to Diana Bracho's 'Gabriela Acevedo', here, just to name an example...), de la Rosa's Marlene is MORE than odious enough herself.

Marlene's world collapsing around her, with her victims rising once again to (HOPEFULLY!) rub it in her face, has been a LONG time coming. SHE deserves it, Eva, and Marlene's OTHER victims deserve it... and you VIEWERS deserve it! Let's all ENJOY it as it happens!

(And... would I be a HORRIBLE person if I were to say... let it be LONG and PAINFUL???) ;-)

La Esclava Blanca... epi 49/61, Tuesday
part 1

Isabel's party continues, and what a party it is, I'm glad we were invited.

Abdul and Ayutende have arrived, to the displeasure of Adela, and everyone lines up to have their fortunes told, Isabel first.

Miguel has joined Siervo and Tomas in the tunnels and await the blast, Miguel says they have saved enough for a boat, but Siervo is ready to make a run for it now.

Ayutende talks of the man who gave Isabel life, my father Isabel asks, but pulls back the shells and turns away, you know nothing of this world yet, because the world has been denied you for years, today is your birthday, but you will stop being a child the day you meet your father's real face.

sad Reme goes back to the kitchen, has a drink, Trinidad has followed her, and they talk, Trinidad wants no more of her game, what game, that I can't talk to you, can't look, can't touch, but I know you want me, your crazy, Reme smiles back at him, Trinidad continues,I see it in your eyes but as we get closer you pull away, Reme takes a good draw on her liquor bottle, stands to leave and yells at him for rejecting her, he kisses her, and they move to a back room, no more talking Reme says and they get busy.

it's Victoria's time for a reading, a wind blows, they talk, Victoria recognizes the necklace, she remembers her mother made it and calls her mama, Ayutende thinks she is crazy, Victoria tells her her name and how Lorenza invented a ceremony because the other kids were on her for being white, and named her Olujimi, it means a gift from god, this strikes home, Ayutende knows this word from her haunting dreams where she sees a young white girl, but she remembers nothing but what her husband told her, and that's not true, Victoria says, I know you, I know your life,

meanwhile Abdul is ransacking the house, but breaks something, as Adela is getting on Nicolas in the next room about the fortune teller, Nicolas pulls his gun, and they catch him in the act, as Nicolas prepares to shoot, Adela reminds him of the guests, turn him over to the General, Victoria and Ayutende hear the commotion, do you want to ruin the party, she convinces Nicolas to let them go, but first he wants Abdul to pay Victoria back.

Reme picks up on Victoria and persists in wanting to know what's up, Victoria tells her she saw her mother, but she is dead Reme adds, we all thought so, Reme reminds her, we must stick to the plan.

the guys in the tunnels aren't hearing any noise, and are getting worried, did something go wrong, but alas, Isabel's next present is presented, the fireworks, Miguel is ready to light the fuse but Tomas tells him he'll do it, and he says a prayer to Elequa ?? he who clears all paths, and will clear their path to freedom, then touches the fuse with the torrch and the flame runs down the tunnel, and, and, and, could something have happened, and the fireworks are almost over, Miguel grabs the torch and runs down the tunnel to light it himself, right into the blast.

Victoria and Reme are worried, neither heard the explosion, that's the plan right? Reme adds, Victoria sends Milagros to the pit to find out what happened.

Tomas and Siervo, knocked down by the debris, dust themselves off and wonder about Miguel, they run down the tunnel yelling for him, nothing, but wait, Miguel comes running out of the darkness, "we did it", and they all rejoice,

Isabel thanks Victoria for the wonderful party, and wants to thank her dad, has anyone seen him, nope, Francisco, who has arrived uninvited, is giving him the bad news on Morales, any idea where Morales might be, he is really unpredictable Nicolas says, and Francisco wants his payment including the house in Santa Marta, it's not my fault you are too late, ok, ok, Nicolas says you'll get your payment but you have to finish the job,

we see Morales, stained in blood running through the woods, he flashes back to the night of the fire and later when he failed to kill Victoria a second time, he has to correct his mistakes, he mutters as he falls to the ground.

Milagros arrives at the pit, followed by the unseen Julian who hides in the bushes, she calls for the guys, Siervo will stay as Miguel and Tomas climb out, they give her the good news, they will be free at last, how much is Julian hearing?

Abdul and Ayutende arrive back at their room. Abdul wonders if she will ever talk to him again, she hasn't said a word since Nicolas kicked them out, Ayutende is in turmoil as they argue, he gathers some things and leaves, where are you going she asks, he doesn't answer.

it's morning

Felipe has breakfast with Ana, he needs to return to help with the tunnels, they need to remove the debris, Ana helps him with his jacket, and tells him to be careful.

it's breakfast at Eden, Isabel wants to go to the beach, Adela sees Bunme serving and sends her to the fields, as disheveled Nicolas arrives, are those the same clothes, Adela asks, he says he's been taking care of business, Victoria asks if she can take the party leftovers to the Padre to give to the poor, what? sure whatever.

Victoria tells Bunme she will go see Eugenia, they'll think of something.

and we see Eugenia freaking out, and out of booze, "I hate you Nicolas".

Nicolas has a cigar in his dark office as Adela wants to know what's up, she knows him, he tells her that Morales escaped, he was up all night guarding the house, she tells him he shouldn't have let him live, he wants no hindsights, just solutions, and they talk about the fire, as Candela begins to listen outside the door, but is startled by Isabel, she drops her tray, and Nicolas and Adela see her, do you think she heard Nicolas asks Adela, if she did she will surely talk.

a bloody crazed Morales walks up behind the Padre eating his breakfast, and asking for more wine, and startles him, the Padre says don't hurt me, Morales, in a whispering voice says, you'll be fine if you do what I say, the Padre says he has to say mass first, you're going to say your sick, or would you rather be dead, Morales adds.

Miguel helps Bunme in the fields, he says you must at least try, and Julian looks rather grumpy today.

Paca brings Ana some things, but where did you get the money, Paca has been doing the laundry of some of the neighboring houses, Ana will have none of this, she will get a Job herself.

Candela is nervously cleaning up in the kitchen as Nicolas walks in, come with me.

is Reme walking without crutches now?

Manuela comes to Ayutende's room wanting the rent, Ayutende doesn't know where Abdul is, haven't seen him since last night and she has no money herself, Manuela can't just let her stay there, as Victoria arrives, tells Reme to go with Manuela and settle the account, as she slides inside for a chat with her mother.

ESCLAVA:

Great job, Deb!

All good developments, for the most part, except for Julian now knowing something is up, and Milagros is involved.

Very happy that Victoria is reunited with her mother. Now, to find a way to reunite her with the other members of the family, get rid of Abdul for good, and keep her safe from Nicolas and others.

Reme just had the benefits of sexual healing. No crutches needed anymore! What made Trinidad finally make his move? He's so moody and inconsistent. Will he go back to hating all white people, including Reme, tomorrow? Why are these folks not more worried about making a baby during all of these amorous meetings in the cupboard/wagon/beach/etc? And babies that will be half Black. Society would NOT be accepting of this, and the men would be killed immediately. Perhaps they all think they'll have escaped and living in their utopian paradise by the time anyone has a baby.

Esclava Blanca

Thanks for the recap, deb!

I am worried for Candela.

But yay for Reme and Trinidad! I also wonder how people prevented pregnancies back then...

Eva

MANY thanks, novelera, for this joyous recap. I was delighted to read "In this episode: Universe 100…Marlene 0."

Even though I would have loved to recap this episode, it's fortunate that I arranged not to: we had storms yesterday evening that didn't seem so horrible, but suddenly we lost power at about 8:20 pm, and the power wasn't back on again until early this morning. So no TV, no recording, no computer, nada.

If/when I have time, I'll try to watch the episode on Telemundo's site. It's one I don't want to miss! Again, thanks very much.

Esclava

Terrific recap, deb. And this was an amazing episode. They surely tried to scare us with Miguel not making it out of the tunnel. Julian is bound to cause trouble. Oh, Candela, why did you have to snoop just then. Vivi, sexual healing, of course!

Felipe and Ana are definitely falling for each other. What a great couple they make!

I felt like I was down in the pit with Siervo, Tomás, and Miguel. Great suspense.

Victoria's scene with her mother was so touching. The thing I really enjoy about this novela is that things aren't dragged out for a week.

Abdul must have a screw loose. I guess the writers are just going with his greed overpowering his good sense. He got triple money for showing up at El Eden, and robbing the hosts of the party was just an insane thing to do. There was a little disconnect there, though. Adela said to turn him over to the General. But he managed to return to the posada with Lorenza a free man. I hope we've seen the last of him.

Eva. Excellent succinct recap, novelera! Liked your "packing to leave their happy home"--way to go with the irony. Also liked "Big Whoop" about Florentino's temporary return to consciousness. That was not fair--even by the standards of a telenovela. Esteban was a great caricature of a silly hip hop artist. The actor's English was superb as well. Eva, Soraya and Federica were really playing with fire by humiliating Marlene that directly and thoroughly. Even the Drug Lord Cepeda thinks she's dangerous, as you note. And it's interesting that he seems to kind of like Armando too. Why would the police not open Elsa's letter immediately? We see Fajardo looking the envelope over, but we don't see him open it.

Novelera: Based on tonight's previews, it looks like Isabel will see the monster her father really is!

Eva

thanks so much novelera, for rolling out the story!

Eva may have no money but she has friends, (how many does Marlene have) and buys the house for one dollar from Esteban.

I loved how everyone were doing their best to clear the presence of Marlene out of the house.

so Celeste will be sticking with Pablo's family and may be sneaking Eva in to see the baby, while Noemi wants to return to Eva and not be around Esteban.

Armando sure was being a good sport, and he is slowly losing everything he has, with Mon-Sol headed to bankruptcy, there was a hint Eva may get back the company.

so many good things last night with so much time left, does this portend the bad things to come?

Esclava

@Steve Boudreaux -- Just a reminder, Steve, that the policy on the Telemundo page is not to mention any plot element that hasn't already occurred. So please don't talk about previews of forthcoming episodes. Thanks.

"Elegua God of Crossroads

He's the guardian of the Crossroads of life to the peoples of Nigeria, Benin and to Afro/Cuban practitioners of Santeria. Whenever there are decisions to be made, he provides opportunities and second chances if you're lucky. Elegua is in many places at the same time he could be nowhere and everywhere. He is the ultimate embodiment of choice. He knows every decision possible and every outcome possible born of each individual decision. Oftentimes, Elegua is depicted at a crossroads because in life we are always at a crossroads,"

http://eleguawhatissanteria.blogspot.com/

Santeria was also touched on in "Celia".

Esclava

Deb, thanks for the information on Elegua. I have always been interested in the African religions that were brought to the New World by slaves.

In Brazil they are called orixas. They are the same gods and goddesses as in the practice of santería in Cuba, Puerto Rico and, of course, people in the US who have immigrated from areas where santería is common. The religion in Brazil is called Candomblé in the NE of Brazil. In other parts of the country it is called Macumba. If there are differences in the practices, I’m not aware of them. I had a friend from Cuba who immigrated with the Mariel boatlift in the 80’s. He was a VERY devout Christian (protestant flavor) and deeply ashamed of his brother who was a Santero, a priest in the religion of santería.

I attended a ceremony when I was in Brazil. It was set up through my hotel and doubtless not as authentic as those private ones for believers.

What interested me a lot is how practitioners of the Yoruba religion disguised it from slave masters by co-mingling Catholic saints with their gods and goddesses. Yemenja, goddess of the oceans and many other guises, was merged into the Virgin Mary. Obatalá or Oxala has some characteristics of Jesus. On New Year’s Eve in Rio people worship Yemenja at Copacabana beach.

ESCLAVA:

In Haiti Elegua is Papa Legba, and he, like most of the Haitian vodou (voodoo) lwa (gods) can be associated with certain Catholic saints. Yes, all the better to hide it all from the masters' eyes.

Maybe the worst punishment for Nicolás is a life with the REAL Marquesa de Bracamontes.

Eva la trailera... epi 107,Wednesday
part 1

Marlene is holding the gun to Armando's head, who has devoted his life to giving everything back to Eva, Marlene will kill him if he does, he's tired of Marlene's ways and tells her to shoot, they go back and forth until Marlene finally says she can't, she loves him, and goes for a hug, he goes for the door.

Pablo leaves for work, and Celeste ushers in Eva to meet the baby, lots of coochee coos, as Eva tells of her mother asking to protect her, but Pablo returns, aaa,,, no, no, stay I just need to pick up some things, and she does, and as she sits holding the baby, Pablo is in awe, says he would have loved to have had a child with her, which starts Eva slide to the door, con permiso, Pablo says once again that he's an idiot.

Armando shows up at the police station but runs into Silva who's leaving, and wants to know why he is here, if you talk we will all go down, aaa, Marlene is lethal, Silva is leaving and advises Armando to do the same, he does but it wasn't unnoticed by Pardo who later tells Fajardo.

Ana is back at the bar having a drink when Rey walks in, tell me you came back to see me Rey says, nope, and they promise to never be friends, like Pablo and Eva want each of them to be, and Rey asks for her telephone number, nope, then we might become friends Ana says, and leaves, does Rey tell the bartender he might be in love?

Martin and Federica are getting ready for the fishing trip with Fabi and Diego and... we don't get to go along.

Adri and Luis pop in at Mon-Sol but there is no one there, ah but Armando is in his office, Adri has something to tell him, he'll be a grandfather, Armando loves it.

Marlene pops in on the Monteverdes, interrupts their stupor to let them know they will be grandparents, leaves some money for their expenses, says she could give them more if they follow her instructions when she needs them.

Esteban pops in to see Cami at Eva's as Noemi answers the door so Noemi gets on him for treating Cami all nice like he used to treat her before he dumped he, as Cami comes in and is listening, and is noticed, Esteban wants Noemi to tell her the truth, how he was always the gentleman and she the manipulator, but Noemi storms off.

Armando tells Evencio he went to the police, did you testify against Marlene, he asks, nope, not after his talk with Silva when he could see nothing would ever come of it, Marlene is too clever, she would slide out of it, then attack and kill, Marlene is a ticking time bomb, he wants Evencio to protect Eva, he tells of her gun, but Marlene loves him, in her own way, a lethal kind of love Evencio says, look at you, you are a mess.

Fajardo comes to see Armando, oops, it's Eva's house now, so he asks her about Armando, and she tells how he has changed when he started getting close to the girls and wanting to protect them, Fajardo would like to know what he is up to.

later Fajardo does run down Armando and asks him why he was at the station, did you come to confess, are you a priest now, Armando fires back, and wishes Fajardo would focus on protecting the innocent like Eva and the girls.

Enrique wants Pablo to come to the wedding, JJ and Martin do too but Pablo knows Eva would not like him there, but the furias would, they chime in, and so he agrees, and how about a bachelor party JJ asks, Pablo says the agency will pay, cheers around, but I have the kids so it will have to be at my house, beer and pizza, not so many cheers.

Federica should open a bridal shop since she has bought a wedding dress now for Virginia, and later as they begin to fix up outside for the wedding, Rebeca watches from the bushes.

Eva la trailera... epi 107,Wednesday
part 2

Marlene is at the office overseeing the movers packing up the office stuff when Elsa calls, wants money, in a backpack, dropped in a trash can, etc, etc.

Rey runs into Ana at the hospital, it's fate he says, Ana isn't buying it, he proposes they become lovers, comfort each other, casual sex, call me, Ana in disbelief asks him if he has lost his mind, and leaves, Rey gets one of Pablo's 'I'm an idiot' looks.

Marlene makes the drop, Elsa makes the pickup, and judging by those heels I'm guessing she doesn't get away,

Armando gives the Mon-Sol workers notice, the company is shutting down.

Fajardo calls Pablo to the station and they talk Palacio, Fajardo is totally frustrated, the cases keep mounting and he can't close any of them, and shows Pablo the letter, Elsa who, oh yea, did you talk to her, nope she's missing, well let's open the letter Pablo says, she's in danger and may even be dead, but the Jefe catches on and he's not a fan of lawyers, it's clear to him what the authors intentions are, he takes the letter to put in a safe place, both Pablo and Fajardo look defeated. (Pablo's justifications as to why it was legal to open the letter was that it was not notarized)

Virginia is trying on the gown as the girls gather round, Noemi brings drinks, but none for Cami, Soraya shuts that down.

Pablo is pondering over what to do and mentions to Fajardo the earlier cases, there is something they were going to do but never finished, he needs to talk to Evencio.

Elsa has made it to, is this Andy/Rebeca's favorite dive bar, nah, but of course followed by Andy and Marlene who sit with her, Andy with a gun in her ribs, Elsa reminds them of the letter, yea, yea, but only if they find your dead body, oh yea, so Elsa gives the money back and goes to leave, doesn't work, and they all go for a little walk (don't know where they keep finding all these deserted places in LA and what do the experts say about going to a secondary crime scene where the bad guys are in complete control) and of course Elsa is whining the whole time, taking Marlene to the braking point, ok she's had enough tells Andy to just kill her and bury her already, but Andy is not going for it, he doesn't like the site of blood, what?, you do your own dirty work, well ok, how hard can it be, and, wow,

what a brutal killing,

as Andy throws Elsa to her knees, a cold faced Marlene fires, multiple shots to the body, putting her to the ground.

Eva

Thanks so much, deb, for another marvellous recap. I especially enjoyed the typical deb flair in "she loves him, and goes for a hug, he goes for the door" and "judging by those heels I'm guessing she doesn't get away."

Well, I guess I'm no longer a Rey fan. I find him muy guapo, but his rather crude approaches to SweetFace turned me off. Apparently they had the same effect on her. Though in this novela, one never knows.

Hmmm...I didn't like the wedding dress Cami originally picked out, and now I don't like Virginia's. Perhaps I'm just becoming a crotchety old lady? Nah. Oh well, at least my mind hasn't completely shut down, as Elsa's clearly has. She knows how vicious Marlene can be, and yet she continues to bait her. Make that past tense.

The police jefe has been unreasonable for almost the entire novela, so I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised at his handling of Elsa's letter, but I actually found myself wondering whether he's on the side of the bad guys. Is Marlene paying him off? Or is El Norteño? Yeah, I know, none of that makes sense, but neither do his actions.

La Esclava Blanca - Wednesday, June 29 - Capítulo 50/61, part 1/3

Victoria tries to convince Lorenza of who she really is, but Lorenza doesn’t remember anything and still believes Abdul. Victoria says olujimi.

Nicolas follows Candela with two dogs. Isabel sees them and also follows.

In the fields, Miguel wonders where Candela is. Enith answers that she’s working in the house now, replacing the new slave. Bunme is next to her, looking at her hands. Trinidad comments that she won’t last long. Enith also informs them that Julian is probably with Milagros.

But nope, Julian is alone at the pit. He tells Siervo he’s going to come down.

Victoria sings the song that Lorenza sang to her as a baby. Flashbacks of the fire and palenque. She remembers everything!

Candela cries. She doesn’t know where Nicolas is taking her. Nicolas just tells her to keep walking.

Julian inspects the pit. He finds the hole. As he bends down to look at it, Siervo hits him over the head and knocks him out.

Candela begs for her life. Nicolas says it’s a shame a loyal slave like her decided to run away. He orders her to start running and lets go of the dogs. Isabel hides in the bushes, horrified at what her father said and the sound of Candela’s screams.

Remedios gives Manuela money from the Marquesa to pay for Lorenza’s stay. Abdul returns to the inn and Manuela tells/yells that the Marquesa paid for his wife. He finds Victoria and Lorenza hugging, orders Victoria to leave and Lorenza to pack up her things. Lorenza is pissed, yo no voy para ningún lado (I am not going anywhere). Victoria says she’s staying and she’ll pay to make sure. Abdul doesn’t understand why. Before Lorenza can say that Victoria is her daughter, Victoria screams at Abdul to leave. She’s not afraid of him. She shoves him back. Gabriel and others come to the door to see what’s happening.

Siervo crawls through the hole back into the pit. Apparently he put Julian in the tunnel. Milagros brings Siervo some food. She notices the rope. Siervo tells her to come down.

Isabel is sobbing as she makes her way back to the house. Trinidad sees her and wonders what she’s doing out there. She doesn’t stop, just repeats la mató (he killed her) but doesn’t say any names.

Siervo shows Milagros Julian, still unconscious, in the tunnel. She’s upset; what did he do to him?? Siervo defends himself, Julian discovered the tunnel, he had to do it. He tells her to go find someone who can help them.

Gabriel shoves Abdul out of the inn. He threatens to kill him if he returns. Abdul takes out his knife. He’s not leaving without his wife. Manuela has already sent for the soldiers. They walk up behind him but the General starts in on Gabriel first, asking angrily what he got himself involved in this time. Victoria explains that Gabriel was just protecting them from that man. The General turns around and finally sees Abdul. Otra vez usted (you again)? The soldiers take him away and throw him in jail.

In his office, the General tells Gabriel that thanks to the testimonies of the women, he is free to go since he had nothing to do with Abdul. Gabriel is angry that his own word is not good enough for his father. The General accuses him of always being involved in dangerous, illegal things. He’s still angry that Gabriel deserted the army since it was traición a la patria (treason) and the only reason the General saved him was because he’s his son. Gabriel wonders why he doesn’t just arrest him. When you have your own children, you will understand. Gabriel continues that they are nothing to each other, he disinherited him. The problem is when he wants to live the way he chooses, not the way the General approves of. Hay mil maneras de vivir esta vida, unas mejores que otras (there are thousands of ways to live this life, some better than others) and soon the General will understand.

La Esclava Blanca - Wednesday, June 29 - Capítulo 50/61, part 2/3

Victoria explains everything to Lorenza: she has to pretend to be the Marquesa, she and Miguel are in love, they are planning to escape with all of the slaves. Lorenza says it’s too dangerous. Victoria reminds her that she taught her that los caminos mas difíciles dan las mejores recompensas (the most difficult paths give the best rewards) and they will all be together again. Lorenza can’t wait to see Tomas, Milagros, and her little Rosita. Remedios tells Victoria to slow down; don’t give her so much information all at once. Lorenza wonders where the real Marquesa is. Victoria responds that she’s in Spain, safe and sound, and that she doesn’t know anything.

The real Marquesa is of course still on the ship, annoyed that it’s not moving. Sor Alicia says there is another one they could get on, well it’s not really a barco (ship), it’s actually a chalupa (small boat/canoe) but it’s not very safe.

Miguel is down in the tunnel with Milagros and Siervo, talking about what to do with Julian. Milagros is still very upset, nearly crying. She won’t let them hurt him; he will be loyal to her not Nicolas. Julian comes to. He knows she used him. Miguel won’t kill him, even though Siervo thinks they should. Julian asks Milagros not to touch him. Miguel asks Siervo if he’d be capable of doing to Julian what los suyos (his own kind) have done to them for centuries? And who exactly are his kind, Julian yells, Nicolas? the arrogant white people in Santa Marta? No tengo nada en común con ellos (I have nothing in common with them). Ni siquiera la raza, si eso es lo que cree (Not even race, if that’s what you think). He promises he won’t say anything. Miguel unties him. He leaves and Milagros follows him.

Back in Santa Marta, Victoria thinks that Lorenza is a sign that everything will be fine. Remedios tells her about being with Trinidad. They come across Eugenia, drunk, selling off all her possessions. All of her slaves are already gone, and now she just has a big empty house. She should have had her husband leave her land and horses, instead of luxuries. She calls herself débil (weak), but Victoria thinks she’s una mujer fuerte (a strong woman). Think of Bunme; they will find a way to get her away from El Eden and back to Eugenia. Victoria will help her.

In the fields, Bunme stops working. Her hands are bloody. She walks away and a guard starts whipping her.

Ana tries to talks to women in town, offering her services as a costurera (seamstress). They ignore her. She tries to go to the church, but there’s a note on the door saying it’s closed because the Padre is sick.

The Padre helps Morales with his wounds. He can’t keep the church closed for long; people will get suspicious. Morales says they will leave when the time is right. He needs to finish the job he only finished halfway. God spoke to him. The Padre asks if it wasn’t the devil instead. Morales had not thought of that. Para mi son la misma cosa (for me they are the same thing).

Julian tells Miguel and Milagros what to say if anyone asks where they were. After Julian leaves, Miguel comments they are in his hands. Estamos en buenas manos (we are in good hands), Milagros adds. He tells her to make sure Julian keeps his word. He admits that he’s a good man, but something could still go wrong.

La Esclava Blanca - Wednesday, June 29 - Capítulo 50/61, part 3/3

Enith gives some food to Bunme. She won’t eat though; she wants to die.

Felipe and the others unload the dirt from the tunnel into the sea.

Trinidad tells Miguel and Tomas about what Isabel said, but he doesn’t really believe her since he thinks she’s a little crazy.

Milagros tries to make Julian believe that she does really love him. He still thinks she’s lying. She would always choose the father of her child over anything else in the world. She knows her body; she knows that she’s pregnant, and she wants their child to be born free. He still doesn’t believe her and throws her out.

Victoria tells Tomas that Lorenza is alive. He is speechless.

Lorenza visits Abdul in jail. She knows they are not really married and he only used her for money.

Nicolas returns to El Eden, with slaves carrying Candela’s body. He claims she died por tratar de huir (for trying to escape). Nicolas calls himself a good amo to loyal slaves, but he has to be firm with those who are not. Everyone looks on, not saying a word. Isabel runs inside and cries. She remembers what Lorenza said about el verdadero rostro (the true face) of her father.

Trinidad understands now what Isabel was saying: Nicolas killed Candela. But she didn’t tell anyone and she’s not going to. Miguel tells him that Isabel had nothing to do with it, so don’t be angry at her. Enith wonders if Nicolas discovered the plan, but Tomas says no, or else they would all be dead. Trinidad is fuming. The only thing he cares about right now is venganza - uno de ellos por uno de nosotros (revenge - one of them for one of us).

Adela wants Nicolas to go to church to confess. Una cosa es hacer lo que haga falta para sobrevivir, y otra muy diferente pasar de largo sin pedirle perdon a Dios (it’s one thing to do what you need to do to survive, and quite another to keep going without asking God for forgiveness). Nicolas tells her to stop with the mojigatería (sanctimoniousness). He’s had to do a lot to maintain the family, often following her suggestions. Adela stops him: She is not his accomplice in all of this. No, she is his mother, he is a worthy son of hers, and she should be proud of him. Prayers are for other people; she and he are made for other things. Adela walks out slowly (maybe she’s finally seeing the monster that he really is?)

Milagros cries alone in the kitchen. Victoria was looking for her everywhere. Milagros tells her she’s pregnant and Julian doesn’t believe her. Victoria asks if the drink in her hands is para perder el bebé (to lose the baby)? Milagros doesn’t drink it; she just sobs as she hugs Victoria.

Eva. Excellent recap, deb! I second Juania's remarks about your observations and agree with Pablo that he is an idiot! So is the police chief about the letter. I don't see how the police are under any legal obligations not to open the letter just because that's written on the outside--after all, at the very least Elsa was a possible witness in a future criminal prosecution. Juanita, I think it's more likely that the chief is the victim of sloppy writing rather than in league with any of the criminals, though he certainly is acting dumb. Also, he hasn't seemed very bright ever since he forbade Pablo to carry a gun. Maybe the deserted place is someplace like Griffith Park? But it looks more like Miami to me. I kind of thought that Rey was funny and clever in his attempt to court Ana, though she doesn't seem to have much of a sense of humor. I hope he's successful and that she does end up falling for him. As far as Rebeca's scoping out the wedding preparations is concerned (and how did she manage that?), I hope she's not planning a mass murder. There have been too many of those in real life lately. Now if someone were to take out Rebeca, however, that would not be a bad thing. And I'm glad Esteban was given what-for by Noemí. He certainly had it coming--though it was always obvious that he hadn't been very enthusiastic about his relationship with her.

Eva

To begin, I'm going to be away next week. My granddaughter is getting married, and it's in a rustic setting with no television! So I'll need to do some binge watching the weekend of the 9th. It should be a fun event, and I adore the young man she's marrying. For example, he surprised her with his proposal of marriage at Half Moon Bay [beside the Pacific Ocean for non-Bay Area folks] at midnight, with the full moon shining on the water. He knelt in the sand to ask her and to put the ring on her finger. Of course neither her parents nor I saw this. It was just the two of them; we only heard about it from the bride-to-be.

I won't be able to recap tonight either as it's my book club night and I usually don't get home until 10:00. This is a fun book group, with wine! I've been a member of this group for 25 years. We're reading The Marriage of Opposites about the family of Camille Pissarro, the impressionist artist.

Yep, one can only marvel that that captain or chief or whatever the heck he is ever rose higher than walking a beat. They couldn't trust him with a cruiser; he'd probably total a couple before they busted him to the male equivalent of meter maid.

I saw some foreboding in Rebeca's peering at the wedding preparations and Enrique's seeing Virginia's dress. Does Rebeca have one of those sci-fi invisibility cloaks? Her peeking through a shrub was beyond ridiculous.

The writers have been all over the map with Esteban. He was terrific with Soraya and Pancho, loyal and very fond of them. He obviously didn't really love Noemi, but does that make him a horrible guy. But now Camila seems to think he's a cad, and she deserves a loving relationship. So I don't know where that is going.

Marlene is sure getting used to killing people. Remember how shaken she was after she killed Marta? Now she doesn't even turn a hair. Speaking of hair, I'm now convinced this is Erika's real hair. I couldn't believe she'd have cut off and dyed her gorgeous blond locks. But it does look real, and I've noticed this week that it's grown.

Esclava

Thanks for another fine recap, J. I'm out of time for commenting since I said a lot about Eva! This novela is so thrilling right now. Thank goodness Lorenza regained her memory. I hope we've seen the last of Abdul. I can't even guess what's going to happen with Isabel. My hope is that she leaves the area with Gabriel.

Eva. Novelera: A wedding! How fun! Enjoy yourself--it sounds as festive and wonderful as a telenovela wedding. Very funny and entertaining remarks about Eva, as usual. I especially liked "marvel that he ever rose higher than walking a beat. They couldn't trust him with a cruiser..." Also: "Does Rebeca have one of those sci-fi invisibility cloaks?" I expect that Camila and Esteban will stay together--as soon as Esteban apologizes for (even unintentionally) leading Noemí on.

ESCLAVA:

Thank you so much, J. I was very upset by poor Candela's grizzly demise. There isn't punishment enough for Nicolas.

Trinidad once again channels his grief and anger in the most unproductive way. Now we kill one of them? Ugh! I really think Rem needs to stay away from him until he decides where he stands.

I was so happy that they didn't drag out Lorenza regaining her memory. Now, how will she get the chance to be reunited with the rest of her family, if even briefly?

I was pleasantly surprised that Julian didn't need any threats or cajoling to decide to keep quiet about the tunnel. I understand his anger at Milagros, but am hopeful that since he didn't react more angrily about the planned escape that it will be easier for him to get over his anger at Milagros. The baby is a game changer. He surely doesn't want his child born into captivity either, and will likely eventually want to go where Milagros and the baby goes.

Question: Since I haven't really watched from the beginning, are Julian and Eugenia mixed racially (Black, White, Native American)? Have they explained their backgrounds and how they came to be where they are? I didn't know until this episode that Eugenia had been married, and I thought Julian's statement that he has nothing in common with "them" was interesting.

Esclava

Julian for sure is mixed race. I wish my memory was better. Hope someone else chimes in. I remember Julian talking with Milagros about his background (white father, black mother??) He definitely feels that the white hacienda owners treat him like a second class citizen.

I also have a vague memory of Adela alluding to Eugenia not being 100% white, and this was part of her strong objection to Nicolas having a relationship with her. Again, leaky memory, but I think Nicolas might have married Eugenia but Adela took the bull by the horns and wrote to Spain for a wife.

Eugenia was married to an Englishman who was living with her in Colombia. He was much older, and Eugenia was cheating on him with Nicolas. When he died she thought she'd get a lot of money from his estate, but his children in England managed to cut her off with nothing. Everything she's done since then with the cacao production and cacao stealing has been a reaction to her impacted finances. They showed her buying new gowns before she got the news she wasn't getting money. And Bunme was trying to talk her out of being so extravagant before she actually saw the money.

wow, another wonderful show and recap to match!
thanks J!

I'm amazed at how this show keeps building and building, and now we have one more person that sees Nicolas for what he is, this will be a big blow because Nicolas justifies himself by doing everything for his family, will it push the beast into a corner, all the while both the Marquesa and Morales are coming for Victoria, or maybe Francisco will get it right for once and get to Morales first.

ah Abdul, when Lorenza came to see him in jail, she called him a cheat, and as he stood, some cards fell out of his sleeve, and his cellmates could also see he was a cheat.

interesting that Nicolas is going to eat his loss over the stolen cacao, just to punish Eugenia, and what will happen to her?

ESCLAVA:

Thanks for the answers, Novelera. Neither one of them looks White, which made me all the more curious about Eugenia's background and circumstances.

Vivi- Eugenia arrived from Europe with her older husband who had control of the new cacao machine, looking for investors of which Nicolas was primary, they had an 'open' marriage' shall we say, Bunme was there, and he liked to watch among other things, (and on the side she had an affair with Nicolas), and they seemed to love each other, some people questioned Eugenia's race, was she part black, but it was never disclosed, and when her husband died, Nicolas asked her to marry him, but she turned him down, (which you just don't do), and he went off with the Marquesa, and she made a deal with Alonso for the cacao machine, (Nicolas had converted his crop to cacao counting on the deal with Eugenia), so he then... and she.. and, and, they are still working at getting the other.

Julian and the other guards appear to be different from others, somewhere between slaves and and their owners, I think the writers are being very tactful in telling this potentially explosive story, in letting us get to know each person as a unique individual.

early on I found and posted some stuff on the various classes, at the top being blue bloods from Spain, who looked down upon other peoples of Spain (hence Nicolas interest in marrying a marquesa) and then bringing that system to the Americas with other europeans, the natives, blacks and all the mixtures in between.

ESCLAVA:

Very interesting, Deb. So, did Nicolas really love Eugenia, or did he just want to marry her because he also thought she would inherit a lot from her husband? Well, Eugenia really screwed things up, and put herself and Bunme at Nicolas' mercy. Not a good place to be!

ESCLAVA:

I know a lot about the caste systems imposed by each of the European colonizers on the people they conquered, enslaved, mixed and/or lived with in the New World. It was quite complex-- lots of different ways to separate and categorize people with a dizzying number of names to describe each and every possible admixture of races. It's almost laughable, if it weren't so sad and disgusting. But it seems unrealistic to me that a woman who looks like Eugenia is even trying to pass for white. But, if no one has caught on yet, more power to her.

Esclava

if we can say Nicolas loves anyone other than himself, yes he was infatuated with her and truly wanted to marry her, but she didn't want to be that kind of slave to him or anyone else.

Esclava:
Vivi, Julian is mixed and his grandfather killed his mother for having mixed children. If I am not mistaken Manuela too. Thank you for the recap J.
Nicolas is sub-human, smh but he is a true representation of slave owners. Vivi, thanks for the Papa Legba info. In Haiti voodoo is a common religion for the people as much as the catholic church tried to demonize it they could not. It is part of the heritage from the ancestors.
Romy

ESCLAVA:

Deb- Well, that is shocking. She was smart to walk away. She should have continued to have nothing to do with him.

Romy- When I lived in Haiti, I lived in the most sacred vodou site in the whole country- Sodo. I had many visitors comes stay with me during Fet Sodo every July to celebrate love goddess/Virgin Mary stand-in, Erzuli Freda, and the snake god Dambala. Thousands of people celebrating and worshiping together. It was amazing. I loved it.

Here is listing of the caste system. These people had way too much time on their hands, obviously: https://nativeheritageproject.com/2013/06/15/las-castas-spanish-racial-classifications/

what was making this work for Eugenia is that her husband was a wealthy upperclass businessman from England ??, but now that she has no money, no business, and it turns out she wasn't legally married because her husband didn't divorce one of his former wives (Alonso researched this trying to get her inheritance, of which she got nothing), but now...

Esclava

Eugenia wanted things to stay the same, but Nicolas walked away from her, to make an honest go of it with the marquesa, which made Eugenia jealous, but Milagros started feeding him something that made him impotent, which shook his world, but he somehow missed a couple of meals when he showed up at Eugenia's to see if it was just the marquesa that had that affect on him, and they had their wonderful sex like always, and the affair was back on.

Esclava

Deb, you are amazing! I don't know how you remember all these details. And, Romy, thanks for reminding me about Julian's grandfather having killed his own child for having children by a person of another race. My God! I can't even comprehend all the people in the world who have been killed for being "the other". I just read a book called The Dog Master, fiction, that had at its premise the protagonist being the first person who domesticated a wolf. But this person was a modern man biologically, and his tribe persecuted and killed Neanderthals.

I'll take Esteban if Camilla doesn't want him! I dread tonights episode because someone is gonna die! I hope its not Suavecito! Nlopez

Eva. Otoh, the writers may be teasing us (It's what they do), and someone will be badly injured and not die (yet another coma), or Rebeca herself may finally be killed--and about time!

Eva

"Rebeca herself may finally be killed--and about time!"

Amen, Span Prof!
