Yago #18, 6/6/16: Children Taken, Children Lost
Fidel lines up the kill shot to Julia Michel’s heart. She
has no idea her young life is about to end, as she enjoys street-side tacos
with her old friend Ambar and Ambar’s handsome new beau Yago. Fidel, fortified
by his memories of how Camilo Michel killed his three children in cold blood,
prepares to take the life of Camilo’s lone child without remorse. Suddenly,
another redhead appears in his sightline. Selma, his love, his mujer, stands
defiantly in front of clueless Julia, blocking Fidel’s shot. He calls Selma’s
cell phone and demands that she get out of the way. Selma tells him he’ll have
to shoot her too, if he wants to shoot Julia! Yago notices Selma’s presence,
and possibly notices the sniper on the roof across the street. He’s clearly
relieved when Julia’s bodyguards arrive and escort her safely away. Fidel
curses in frustration.
Yago drops Ambar off at home, and backs out of any post-date
nookie by claiming exhaustion. Ambar is visibly disappointed. She tells Sara
and Lucio, who are celebrating their gambling scam with champagne, that she isn’t
sure what her status is with Yago. Sara smiles to herself.
At a bar, Teo tries to drown his guilt over Lorenzo’s death
in a bottle of tequila. He observes a table of youngsters having drinks and
flashes back to himself as a teen, having a party at his house. His annoying
little sister comes downstairs and flirts with all his friends, and he angrily
sends her back upstairs. But his friends have an idea about how his sister
could come in handy gaining them a LOT of money...
Abel shows up, and Teo shares how guilty he feels about taking the life of someone so young like Lorenzo. Abel instinctively knows that it’s his sister’s death that's weighing so much on Teo. He tells Teo, “When you kill a person, a part of them remains with you forever, here on your back… You and I are the same.”

Drunk Abel later returns to the cabin where he’s stashed
Lorenzo. He warns Lorenzo again not to ever go back to Omar Guerrero’s house. Then
he asks if the young man would like to go far away, with him, to the United
States. Lorenzo can barely contain his excitement. Before passing out, Abel
says they’ll prepare for their departure tomorrow. Lorenzo tucks his surrogate
father into bed.
Fidel is ticked off at Selma, but she holds her own. She
claims that had Fidel killed Julia that way, they would have lost Yago forever.
He reminds her that Camilo killed his kids. Selma says, “I’ll never forget what he did. Julia will die, eventually.” Fidel
reminds Selma that Julia isn’t their daughter Fabiana. “Camilo’s hand didn’t tremble when he killed your daughter.”
The next day, Yago confronts Fidel and asks what was Selma
doing there. “What’s going on?... I don’t
believe anything you say… I think you’re lying to me… If you want me to help
you, then you have to tell me the truth.” Fidel assures Yago that all he
wants with Julia has to do with growing his business. “I’m trying to kill two birds with one stone—help you with your revenge
and propel my business forward.” Yago reminds Fidel that he taught him not
to trust anyone.
Ambar goes to see Abel at his place and catches a glimpse of
Lorenzo through the window, just as Abel arrives. “Why are you hiding a kid?” Abel lies and tells Ambar that Lorenzo
is his son, but no one knows about him. Even Lorenzo doesn’t know he’s his
father. “I don’t want what happened to me
to happen to him. I want him to have everything I didn’t.” Ambar pledges to
help Abel with Lorenzo, and promises to keep the secret. That’s what friends are for.
Yago tells Katia his feelings about Fidel lying to him, and
asks her to investigate Fidel. She points out that it won’t be easy. They agree
that Teo is the best person to pump for information—a hard task considering how
Katia and Teo get along like cats and dogs, but Katia agrees to try.
Teo is handing the casino security a picture of Damien and
telling them to be on guard, when Katia shows up and asks him out to lunch. Teo
finds the offer suspicious, and Katia being nice and flirty with him even more
so. Katia comes right out and tells him Yago asked her to talk to him about
Fidel. Over liquid lunch (tequila for Teo, coffee for Katia), Teo tells Katia
that Fidel is secretive the way he is because he lost his children in such a
tragic way. He says it isn’t easy for a parent to lose their children that way.
Both Teo and Katia get lost in thought over their own personal life tragedies.
In another part of the city, Sara and Lucio are about to
experience the (hopefully, temporary) loss of their own child. As Sara wraps up
a call with Lucio (who is off to pay the loan shark), Matias begins his
practice ride. When Sara turns back around, Matias' horse comes back rider-less.
Sara tries to hold back her panic as she calls for him. Soon, the police and
Lucio have arrived at the stables/riding club. The police ask if Matias could
have run away, angry about something. Sara negates that possibility, but Lucio
wonders if he could have gone to see Jonas and Melina like before. He calls
them. Jonas has just suggested a vacation to Melina, when they receive the
call. Melina starts to fret immediately upon learning Matias has disappeared.
She has a bad feeling-- she feels he’s in danger! Bruno arrives home a short
while later, with Alejandra, and they all head over to Lucio and Sara’s house.
Lucio calls Abel. Sara calls Ambar. They run off to Sara and
Lucio’s house. Abel warns Lorenzo not to open the door for anyone.
Katia pushes Teo to talk about what’s troubling him. “Something happened to you Teo, or you wouldn’t
be drinking this way. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want. I know we’ve
had our differences, but if there is something inside you want to get out, tell
me.” This rare tender moment between these two is interrupted by a call to
Teo from Abel, informing him of the kidnapping. He tells Katia, who immediately
texts Yago.
Teo is temporarily paralyzed, lost in the memory of how he
and his friends planned the fake kidnapping of his little sister so that they
could get the ransom money. He and his sister were traveling in his car, when
he pulled over, pretending the car was having trouble. His two buddies, who
were masked, drive up, intimidate them at gunpoint, knock Teo out, stuff his
sister in the trunk, and drive away. Katia has to call Teo’s name a few times
before he snaps out of it and jumps into action.
Sara asks Lucio if he paid Tomas the loan shark. Lucio
affirms he did, but takes Abel with him to demand answers from Tomas. Despite
the threat of losing some of his digits to Abel’s pliers, Tomas doesn’t back
down. He assures them he didn’t do it, but he can’t control his business
partners/associates. He warns them that things will go very badly if they call
the cops. Yago is hiding around the corner listening to the whole altercation.
When Lucio and Abel leave, Yago takes his turn roughing up Tomas. “You’re insulting me for doing the work you
asked me to do?” “I didn’t ask you to kidnap a child!” Tomas reminds Yago
that he doesn’t work alone, and he also has to answer to his other associates—the
ones behind the kidnapping.
Lucio reports back to Sara that it wasn’t Tomas, but his
business partners. He assures her that they’ll get Matias back and pay whatever
it takes, but Sara’s not listening. “This
is all your fault! If anything happens to my child!...” “Matias is MY child
too! I’d give my life for him. Don’t put the blame on me!” Sara goes to
clean Matias’ room, and Lucio follows her. She cries as she folds his clothes and puts
away his toys, saying that she wants his room to be perfect for him when he
comes back. She breaks down sobbing, and Lucio holds her tenderly.
Yago arrives, and pretends to be surprised by the news when
Ambar tells him. Abel and Teo arrive, and report that the kidnappers have not
yet called. Soon, Jonas, Melina and Bruno join the group. They want to call the
police. Lucio insists they can’t call the police. Sara has finally had enough.
She wants to call the police too. “We
have to do everything to protect Matias!”
Teo flashes back to the tragic end to his kidnapping scam.
The ransom had been paid by his parents, and Teo met up with his two friends to
divide the cash and get his sister back. They meet in the same field where the fake
kidnapping took place. The two friends are giddy that they got away with it.
Teo is more concerned about getting his sister back safe and sound. He demands that
they get her out of the trunk right now. The friends seem kind of nervous and
jumpy when he asks if she’s alright, but just as they go to open the trunk, a huge
gang of thugs appears. They’re mad about the kids using THEIR territory to
commit a crime. The gang leader takes the ransom money and then orders his gang
to kill the three boys. Much later, Teo wakes up further away in the field,
bloody and bruised. His two friends lie dead on the ground next to their car. Teo
runs to open the trunk and finds his poor little sister-- DEAD. He sobs and
collapses, but knows he will be in trouble if his sister’s body is found with
the body of his two friends. He digs a grave, drags his sister’s body into it, throws
gasoline on her body, and sets it alight. He sobs uncontrollably as her body
turns to ash.
In the present, it’s Abel this time who has to snap Teo back
into the moment. Abel sends Teo to keep an eye on Tomas. Lucio’s phone rings,
and everyone jumps. The kidnappers demand 5 million (they don’t specify if it’s
pesos or dollars)-- otherwise the kid dies. Yago coaches Lucio to demand proof of
life. The kidnapper goes to the part of the dark warehouse where his associate has
Matias tied to a chair and blindfolded. They rough him up a bit, record him
calling out for his mom and dad, and then send the video to Lucio. “You have 24 hours to pay, otherwise, we’ll
return the boy to you in little pieces!”
Avances: Lucio and
Yago go to rescue Matias, and Lucio chickens out.

HUGE MISTAKE that Abel told Ámbar Lorenzo's name! Even if Abel's plan to take him to the US works out, someone's bound to mention the name and things will snowball from there.
I can't just watch the action and dialogue in novelas. I love to catch background things like reused props from other shows. The bottle of wine Fidel opens is the same design from Sueño de Amor, unless this is some kind of Subway-like product placement.
The camera work is interesting on this show. The soft filtering when they shoot Fidel reminds me of the Vaseline-on-the-lens trick that was used decades ago on shows like Dynasty.
The scene where Teo's little sister is put in the trunk and struggles, was that ever unsettling to watch.

I just knew we were getting set up for a Matias kidnapping, but the parallels to Teo were tough viewing. Talk about a monkey on your back. These are some messed up, tragic people but interestingly tragedy brought on by their own poor choices. Now they live with the consequences. Who knew Abel would be our philosopher on this.

Kinoma- I guess Abel figures that Lucio wouldn't dare mention Lorenzo's name to Ambar (they never even told Sara), and Bruno and Ambar don't hang out, so telling her his name wouldn't have consequences. But, he's also not the sharpest knife in the drawer, or knows that Yago routinely pumps Ambar for information. I hope she breaks her promise of secrecy and tells Yago, so that he and especially Teo can get that off their consciences. Yes, the camera work when Teo's sister was stuffed in the trunk was well done-- made the audience feel like we were in there with her, feeling her fear. Poor girl.
Daisynjay- This tn is a really interesting character study of many people. As you say, people who made some bad choices which resulted in tragedies that have shaped who they are today. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Katia's back story. I really enjoyed her scenes with Teo last night.

Thank you, Vivi. I'm feeling better today, but I'm glad I took last night off because I zzzzz'ed in the middle of this (and apparently missed some good stuff).

Julie- I'm so glad you're feeling better. The only reason I can think for why the associates went through with the kidnapping is because Lucio was late with his payment. The kidnapping plan was already in play when Lucio went to pay Tomas. I really don't think the associates care that the payment was made. It was late, and these are the consequences. These guys aren't normal businessmen. They're thugs, and much of these intimidation tactics are to show other and future clients that they aren't playing around when they lay down the rules about payment schedules and fees.

Julie- Yes, both ladies are bottle redheads. But this is the first time in a tn Jade Fischer has ever had any other color other than her natural brown hair. It makes you wonder why they chose to make her a redhead. Maybe someone in the hair and makeup department just had a thing for redheads. :)
I remember some years ago when a particular shade of red, which Beckster called "Baboon Butt Red," was seen on several characters across multiple TNs. I think they were pushing Garnier in product placements, too. It was the color of red velvet cake.

If this was El Hotel I would say that red hair definitely has some significance, not too sure here though, but it nags considering what Fidel is trying to deny.

I had a definite "oh S***" second there that the writers were going to do that to us.
That said, I still feel sometimes that Ambar is still this sacrificial lamb that is being played in everyone's story. Now she has herself immersed in Abel's shenanigans. She needs to go on one of her global photo shoots. Take the little guy and Lorenzo with her--summer vacation trip.

Fidel: If Selma hadn't showed up, he likely would've shot Julia to death. I noticed the red hair look on both of them & still wondering if Julia is actually Fidel's biological kid.
He obviously wants revenge on Camilo, who killed Fidel's 3 kids & he's hell-bent on revenge & I can't blame him. If someone killed my kids like that, I'd go completely crazy.

Daisy, I agree about Ambar, I don't think she'll make it to the end of this TN. Some innocent person is going to get squished, and she seems the most expendable. If the gangsters don't get her, her heart condition will. Sara will blame herself regardless. Maybe for once Sara's guilt will drive her to do something constructive (most likely as she is drawing her last breath).
This TN was advertised as Yago being "Count of Monte Cristo"-like. In seeking his revenge, the Count sometimes used his friends and acquaintances ... seems more like Fidel than Yago to me. But I'm liking it nonetheless, especially with the awesome job the recappers are doing.

I don't think there's much that gives Sara pause. She's cold. She may be pensive for two minutes if Ambar were to die, that is, until she is knee deep in another scam and that gives her joy. I don't believe her angst over the kidnapping of Matias because it gives her leverage against Lucio, and she'll use it.

He hates himself for it, but why enter Fidel's world where he knows violence will always be around the corner? This make him leaving Lorenzo alone with Abel even worse. Katia, would you believe Abel is actually a better catch than Teo?

Sara never wanted to go to a loan shark in the first place. That was all Lucio's idea. But the only person who's getting my sympathy is Mathias. (I wonder if it has ever even crossed Yago's mind that it's his kid?)
Great recap Vivi. Nice paced, well written. A pleasure to read. Relieved to know our young woman didn't get shot (haven't seen this yet). Always seem to be responding to tofie's comments BUT:

No, she didn't want Lucio's loan shark money, but she isn't opposed to cheating at cards, which has to be a very dangerous activity. She glories in lies and manipulations......she's never looked happier on her double duty day of illicit sex and cheating at cards. Give Matias a couple more years and he'll be old enough to pick up on all of this. Too bad!

So this is a good novela, but I'm having trouble staying interested because of Yago. Frankly right now he's a reactive character with seemingly no vision. He is completely wrapped around Sara's finger and I don't feel drawn to a character who is supposedly out to avenge betrayal but has basically been stopped in his tracks by the person who betrayed him most. Meanwhile he has a lovely woman in front of him far better than Sara and he clearly feels nothing for her, which is not something that can be helped, but what can be helped is having her around to conceivably be put in harm's way and he can also help leading her on. And I'm also annoyed that Ambar herself doesn't just dump him when he consistently shows less interest in her than she in him.
And the last bit of annoyance is with the people behind this novela clearly staging things so that I as viewer buy into the romance between Sara and Omar/Yago and root for their inevitable happily ever after. So I don't see how I can watch this show when it's obvious they're setting me up for a completely undesirable ending that I will never buy into (putting aside all other issues I don't see the chemistry everyone else does between them and feel only annoyance and a desire to fast forward when they have "romantic" scenes).

So I don't see how I can watch this show when it's obvious they're setting me up for a completely undesirable ending that I will never buy into (putting aside all other issues I don't see the chemistry everyone else does between them and feel only annoyance and a desire to fast forward when they have "romantic" scenes).

Annie- I definitely get your anger at Omar for the way he is using Ambar to get at Sara, Lucio and Abel. That's the thing about revenge, there is always collateral damage, and so you have to ask yourself if it's really worth it.
As for the writers setting us up to root for Yago and Sara-- I don't see it. If anything, the writers have done a very good job of trying NOT to make us feel sorry for Sara, which they could have easily done by playing up how she was used by her father, her sacrifices for her sister, and her marriage to a man she doesn't love. Instead, they have chosen to also show us that she is very much as much of a player as Lucio and Damian, enjoys the game and using people, just as much as they do. This is not a happily ever after, skipping into the sunset, puppies and rainbows kind of gal. That is NOT the end I envision for her or Omar/Yago-- separately or together.

Judy- I agree that it was real angst that Sara was feeling for her son. Also agree with Sandy and Niecie that on some level Sara must have realized that the darker parts of her and Lucio's life could at any point touch Matias. It should be no surprise that Matias could be targeted like this. Perhaps she thought that since she had managed to shield Ambar all these years from the truth about the dirty underbelly of their family and any consequences, she could do the same with Matias.

Teo's backstory was a bit of a shock. As to why he ended up in a life that provokes violence I wonder whether he ever thought he deserved to end up this way. I'd love to know what happened to his parents.
I'm also sure now that Ambar won't make it to the end. She has Sacrificial Lamb written all over her. Nor do I think Yago and Sara will end up together. Her betrayal of him was too great for that.

After what he did to his sister, I can see young Teo deciding he was never worthy of love or family again, distancing himself from his parents, and falling into a life of crime and/or solitude.
We still don't know what horrible thing Katia did to bring her to this life. We know it has to be pretty bad, since her family disowned her. But it makes sense that she and Teo would have such horrible back stories. You have to be a pretty broken person to lead the kind of lives they lead-- to turn your life and safety over to men like Fidel and Yago and dedicate yourself to their murky cause. You almost have to have a death wish.
Agree Vivi that there's no happily ever after for Yago and Sara. And their chemistry, in some ways, feels like Angry Sex, which is great for Passion but certainly not for Happily Ever After. Don't think that's the writers' plan.
Realistic or not, I'd love to see Yago and Katia together at the end. I guess because I love the actress and the way she's playing the role. Yes, she's a practiced and past-professional seductress and only somewhat recovered, wobbly alcoholic. Not the ideal mate for our curiously-still-innocent-Yago but she has such a powerful, radiant charm in spite of all her red flags and flaws.

I like Katia and Yago as a couple too, but their relationship is already so comfortable as it is, that I don't see it changing. :-(
Teo and Abel have similar back stories, but Teo became a taciturn lone wolf while Abel clings to his friends and wears his heart on his sleeve. Interesting outcomes.
I also noticed that Abel lies very easily - which makes sense; he's a gabby guy and he can't just clam up every time a difficult subject comes up. Teo gets more mileage out of silence and truth.
