Yago, #35, Wednesday 7/13/16: The bride wore white... I mean red... I mean white
Everyone loves a happy ending. In classic movies, the happy ending always begins with a question: "will you marry me?" Yago remembers how he, as Omar, was practicing that big question in front of a mirror when, to his horror, he realized that the ring was missing. Bruno had taken it. Omar reassures the boy that, while marrying Sara will make Omar very happy, Omar wants Bruno to be happy as well. This satisfies Bruno, and he gives the ring back.
In the present, Sara tells Yago that even though she loved Omar, she framed him for the casino heist anyway. "Do you still want to marry me?" She has tears in her eyes; not tears of shame, but tears of terror that this awesomely rich hot guy will reject her.
Yago tells us: I don't believe in happy endings, much less "forever." I know those are the things of fairy tales, and in most cases looks are deceiving. There are princesses who, deep down, are worse than dragons.
Sara's too desperate to wait for Yago's thought-bubbles. She prompts him for a reply. She offers to explain why she betrayed Omar. She didn't do it for the money, as Yago thinks. "I won't justify myself," she begins... and then she proceeds to justify herself.
She grew up running scams and swindles with her father. That was her "job" for a long time. But the casino heist wasn't just a fling; she needed the money for her sister's operation. She was trying to get away from that life when she met Omar. But then her father found her and said that Ambar needed an operation or she would DIE. So yes she betrayed Omar and bought a pass to hell, but it was to save her sister.
Yago asks, if you'd do that to your great love, why should I trust you? Sara takes the ring off and says she's told Yago all of her secrets. She puts the ring down on the sofa and walks away. Yago wipes a tear from his face and runs his hand through his hair.
Katia prepares some counterfeit documents that are meant to convince Abel that Yago was in prison with Omar. Teo is worried that it won't work. Katia is counting on Teo's powers of persuasion. They share a tiny kiss.
Abel pours Ambar a bowl of milk. (I drink mine out of a glass!) Ah, never mind, it's for cereal. She's finally eating. She tells Abel she just needed to clear her head. Abel is just dying to know what Yago told her that put her in such a crazy state. She tries to change the subject. Abel tells her that it turns out that Yago knew Omar. Ambar blinks and says she can't believe it. "Neither can I," says Abel.
Jonas has made a wooden sword for Matias. He says he's only ever made three swords: One for Omar, one for Bruno - he's not sure where that one is now (how much do you want to bet that Lucio stole it) - and now this one for Mati. Mati says he loves Jonas and Melina very much, but he can't help feeling sad about his father and he'd like to see him.
Despite his difficulties in prison, Lucio has somehow managed to take up smoking and find some poker buddies, though he doesn't seem to be doing very well without Sara there to help him cheat. The ante is 100 pesos, which seems like a lot for prison inmates, but what do I know. Then Damian comes in, looks at the other guy's cards, and signals to Lucio. Lucio wins the hand, and again, I am gobsmacked that this could happen even in fiction. You don't let other people look at your cards when you play poker! I don't have to be a professional to know that!!
Yago shows Katia a notebook, in which he long ago wrote down his goals for vengeance. One of them was to make Sara feel so guilty that she would confess, in her own voice, to what she did to Omar. "And it happened!" Yago exclaims happily. (That poor sap, thinking she felt guilty. For sure she wouldn't have revealed anything to Yago if not for the risk that Ambar, Lucio, Abel, and Damian might do it first and make her look even worse than if she admitted to it herself.) Plus she left Lucio and lost everything. All of his goals have been met! He even burns his notebook. But he tells Katia he's not done. It's time for the next phase to begin, because there's something that he hadn't previously realized: Sara's confession is not enough. He won't stop until she's bereft of everything.
Teo has brought Yago's phony prison file for Abel to inspect. He says Katia gave it to him personally. Yago was jailed for fraud. These papers are all that remains of Yago's criminal past.
Julia goes back to the club where she first saw Selma sing. She asks the guy if he can give her "Rita"'s address. The guy remembers Julia's drink order and says not only does he have Rita's address, he has something else for Julia too. It's a pink file box. Is there a reptile inside? No, it's baby toys and a small album of Fabiana's baby photos.
Sara goes to her old landlady from 12 years ago and as luck would have it, Sara's old room is available!
Camilo is going bananas wanting to know where Julia's gone. He tells Tom Vargas to bring her back in three seconds. They don't know where Fidel and Selma are, either. Camilo is sure that one of Yago's men took Julia. Tom suggests that perhaps she took off on her own. Camilo isn't interested in Tom's thoughts.
In the morning, Abel pays Yago a visit and gives him back his prison records. Yago pretends to be outraged.
Jonas takes Mati to visit Lucio in prison. Mati notes Lucio's wounds and proudly says that he's been defending himself. Lucio tries to pretend that everything's fine and he'll be out of jail soon. Meanwhile, he doesn't want Mati getting into fights. "You have to take care of yourself and your mother." Mati doesn't want to take care of his mother! Lucio says that the three of them will be together soon, but Mati doesn't want that. He wants only his father. Lucio says Sara just made a mistake and if he can forgive her, so can Mati. No one can split the three of them up.
Abel and Yago bond over their mutual fondness for Omar. Yago says that Omar always suspected Lucio and Sara for the casino heist, but never his best friend Abel. Abel admits that he was involved, but swears that he never knew Omar would be implicated or end up in prison. Abel loved Omar and even now he sees him with every step he takes and everywhere he looks. He even sees him in the mirror. He misses him every day.
Sara tells her landlady that Yago isn't taking her calls, but Katia shows up with a handwritten message from him saying that he loves Sara as she is. Why didn't he deliver it himself? "Because it's bad luck to see the bride just before the wedding," Katia answers.
Julia takes that pink file box to Fidel's hideout, the old theater. Julia has questions for Selma.
Yago asks Abel to keep his secret. Abel agrees. He asks if it isn't time to try getting even with those who have done him wrong. Yago replies noncommittally, running his hand through his hair again. Abel pledges his friendship to Yago and leaves. As Yago turns to go into his house, he gets bonked on the head.
Julia doesn't remember any of the baby toys. Was Selma married to Camilo? Did she leave him and take away Benjamin and Uri? "Are you my mother?" she finally asks.
Yago gets splashed with water on the roof of some building - I believe it's the same one that El Chino jumped off of. Camilo wants to know where Julia is. Yago doesn't know. He won't say where Fidel is, either. Camilo has Tom take Yago's phone, and then they hang him upside-down from a winch and prepare to drop him. (We already know it's a lethal drop!)
Selma tells Julia some stuff that we don't get to hear, in between scenes, but apparently she has explained what happened to Benjamin and Uri. Julia refuses to believe that her father is a killer. What did they do to him to earn such a revenge? Selma says she left him on their wedding day to be with his best friend, Fidel. Julia is horrified to realize that she is the daughter of her father's worst enemy. She runs out of there in a panic, leaving Selma to sob uncontrollably. Fidel has witnessed at least the last part of this.
Yago wasn't kidding about marrying Sara. It's happening TODAY. He's sent her a wedding dress. A white one, LOL, because they don't make wedding gowns in the color that she should be wearing (BROWN). How many women enjoy having their gown picked out for them? Not many, I suspect. But Sara can't afford to be choosy, can she? (OK, it looks like he's sent over a number of garments, and she picks out a red one to try on next.)
Sara says she wants to be friends with Katia. Katia acts as though she finds the idea enchanting. She tells Sara that Yago has been looking forward to this day for a "long time." (Much, much longer than Sara knows!) Katia looks as though she can't wait to wash herself with hot bleach and a wire brush.
Julia meets Ambar and Rodrigo, I think that's his name, at the record store and tells them what happened. Ambar, who knows a thing or two about disappointing relatives, tries to convince Julia that she's not those people.
Ambar gets a text from Yago's phone and calls him. Tom Vargas answers. He says Yago's not available, and won't be until Ambar tells him where Julia is. (Yago is still hanging upside-down high above the ground.)
Melina is mad at Jonas for taking Mati to see Lucio in prison. "You know who his real father is," she says. Jonas points out that Mati doesn't know. Melina gets even madder when Jonas says that Lucio should get custody of the boy.
Julia is not thrilled when her father shows up at the record shop and starts lecturing her. "All I wanted was to be with Selma," she says. But they tried to brainwash her against him and said terrible things about him, "but I'm not so easy to convince," she declares.
Yago meets with Ambar to reassure her that she did the right thing, revealing Julia's location so that Camilo would let him go. Ambar tells him that Julia found out horrible things about her father and maybe he's not even her real father. Yago's sure that Camilo won't harm Julia, though. She's not part of Yago's revenge plan.
Yes! Sara's getting married in a red dress and white shoes. She wants to stop somewhere first, though... Omar's grave. She tells Omar that she's going to become a good person. Life is giving her another chance to be happy. (Wow... even with a dead guy she can't be honest.)
Lucio gives Damian a share of the take from the poker game. Naturally, Damian suspects treachery. Lucio is just trying to find a way to "be strong" for Matias.
At Abel's house, Abel has left a note for Teo. Abel's been getting signs from Fate. After talking with Yago about Omar, he realized that you can't be forgiven if you don't ask forgiveness. Accordingly,
Tom Vargas visits Damian in prison. He wants to know if Yago has any enemies. "I have the perfect person," Damian says.
"Do you believe in happy endings?" Katia asks Sara at Yago's door. "Not until today," Sara says. It seems Yago has invited a lot of people to this impromptu wedding. Sara smiles as Yago prepares to announce the bride. That's right... the bride is - drumroll please - AMBAR!
Oh, Sara's face is priceless.
It's a good thing she didn't wear white!

Regarding Episode 36, Nandicta will be with you today because I won't be home today ( I'm writing this on my clunky phone)
Speaking of the episode the endings for Ambar& ,Lucio and Abel were bomb dropping!! I cannot wait to see Sara's anger, Ambar's pokerface, Abel's repentance and Lucio joining up with Camilo! Lucio joining with Camilo would kind of remind me of Megatron&Unicron for some reason even though Yago is no Optimus Prime.
Did Sara honestly expect a happy ending with Yago? To not betray her like he betrayed Lucio and Ambar? Did Sara seriously believe that she would get spared? What a dumb snowflake!
Just like Countx, I couldn't help but wonder, is Sara in so much denial that she truly thought she deserved a happy ending? That a visit to Omar's grave and a phony pseudo-apology were enough to offset the years of horrendously bad karma she's been dragging? Delusional much?
I had a lump in my throat during Lucio and Mati's scene at jail. Lucio's unconditional love for Mati is his biggest redeeming feature. There is gotta some goodness left in a man who can love and be that devoted to a child who isn't even his.
Abel was in El Paso, Texas visiting the mother of the boy he accidentally shot and killed when he was a teenager. Can't remember her name but Jenny and Sheila come to mind. I know Jenny and Sheila don't sound remotely close to one other but these were the names I thought of when I saw her.
Dam and Lucio running a scam in jail. I can't! :D
JudyB, since you love Spanish expressions that evoke weird imagery, when Tom told Camilo that he couldn't find Julia, Fidel or Selma, he said that "se convirtieron en ojo de hormiga", they were converted in an ant's eye, in other words, they disappeared/vanished. "Hacerse ojo de hormiga" in Mexican Spanish is to disappear.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to read and comment Tuesday's recap. Much appreciated, indeed! I'll post Thursday's recap between 7 and 9 pm EDT. Until then, enjoy the discussion!
Thanks again, Julie! Good day, all! :)
With the likelihood of Lucio, Damian & Camilo teaming up, we're going to see the Body Count increase even further!
Julia is in heavy duty denial about Camilo and I don't see this ending well. She needs to get away from him but I'm not sure what it will take for that to happen.
Sara got what she deserved here but little Ambar is still being strung along. And was she never operated on back in the day?
One thing I don't understand is how did Yago got out of the situation where Camilo and Tom have Yago suspended and hanging upside down?
Abel and Yago bond over their mutual fondness for Omar.
Yes, Omar was a good fellow. Young and naive perhaps, but loving and well-intentioned.
Yago, alas is not.
The physical punishment and damage he suffered in prison has now been fully eclipsed by the emotional damage. And so he goes on to spread the damage around. Directly to the guilty and indirectly to a number of innocent bystanders. This is really heartbreaking to watch, especially in light of the carnage last night in Nice.
Nandicta, ah yes "ojo de hormiga". That one came up very early in my telenovela watching (and in my "teach yourself Spanish" beginnings) and I really had to puzzle through that one. The imagery in different languages is fascinating. I don't have enough years left in my life to learn all that I want to know.
Patio pals, I know most of you relished Sara's hurt and humiliation. And I wish I could too. But I can't. Don't know why. It was certainly a powerful scene.
And the emotional pain of Selma and Julie also just tore me up. Love and bonding that has been built up over the years, however based on violence and duplicity, is now being ripped to shreds. This story is so painful to watch.
But I thank all the recappers for this work on this. You are truly an awesome team.
She did have the operation when she was a kid - but there's an additional operation that she's been putting off for years.
Goblue, Camilo let Yago go when Ambar told him where Julia was. I'll fix the recap to make that clearer.
Nandicta, thanks for clarifying who that woman was. I missed that Abel was in El Paso. I'll fix that too.
Countx, if Sara knew who she was really dealing with I'm sure she would not have expected a happy ending. I guess she figures that if she "confesses" to enough people (who aren't in a position of authority and can't put her in prison where she belongs) then she'll have paid her karma bill. She really doesn't have a clue as to the breadth and depth of pain she's caused even though it's in the eyes of all the people around her.
Thanks for this stellar recap. Nicely done. Like Judy, I especially liked this:
"Abel and Yago bond over their mutual fondness for Omar."
and this made me chuckle as well:
"Wow... even with a dead guy she can't be honest."
While I admit that the final scene was stunning I found it to be extremely disgusting. While certainly Sara is certainly not an innocent, I think that this is simply low class and what he has been doing with her at least borders on if it is not not downright rape and even if Ámbar is aware of the fact that "Yago isn't into her", I'm sure that she is nurturing hope that he eventually will be. Besides, I won't be surprised if Yago's obsession (love?) for Sara wins out ending with him rudely dumping Ámbar leaving her even more hurt than she already has been. I wonder if now he plans to go ahead and have sex with her?
I noticed that once again Abel didn't manage to light that cigarette.
Carlos
You've previously compared sex-for-manipulation as rape. Let's keep in mind that this is Yago's idea of revenge. Sara used sex to manipulate Omar. In Yago's mind, whether it's rape or not, he's only doing to her what she did to Omar.
I doubt that Yago is planning to have sex with Ambar. This wedding prank (which would truly be any woman's nightmare) is Yago's way of letting Ambar have a slice of his revenge cake, but I'm not sure what purpose it serves beyond that. Maybe he will declare this a joke and marry Sara anyway. (She will complain, but she won't refuse.)
Otherwise, I don't see how he expects to gain custody of Mati. I don't think Ambar provides a path to that unless Yago has a way to get both Lucio and Sara locked up for life (or killed, which doesn't seem to be his style). Then maybe Ambar would get custody. But marrying Sara seems so much easier.
"...I don't see how he expects to gain custody of Mati."
Gaining custody of Mati will be the easy part, gaining his love and trust is quite another matter.
Carlos
Oh! And remember, somewhere among his things, maybe in a safe deposit box Sara doesn't have access to, Lucio has an audio recording of her saying that she took part in the heist. He threatened to use it against her once when she was going to leave him. So, that's his security to ensure that she'll come back to him when he gets out of jail.
Teo & Katia need to get out of Mexico ASAP!
I seems like my opinion of Yago and Sara are a bit different than others. I read that many dislike Yago as much as Sara, and I'm reading that others feel a bit sorry for Sara too. I still like Yago, I can see where he's coming from, I've seen enough TNs of people in prison in Mexico to know that it's simply hell on earth, so I can completely sympathize with him for wanting to hurt the people who betrayed him. The only one I have some sympathy for is Abel, I think he never would have betrayed Omar if he knew what he was doing was going to result in that. I'm hoping that Yago decides to let him off the hook.
Maybe Ambar was the one to suggest that Yago use her in this way. Her sister was not feeling bad about taking Yago away from her, and i'm guessing she believed Yago's story about his past with them. Why anyone thinks that what Sara did by robbing the casino or any of her other crimes for the money to pay for Ambar's medical bills was justifiable is insane. How many people have high medical bills and don't resort to a life of crime to pay for it? A decent person would not consider doing what she did. Especially the betrayal of a friend.
I can see Sara now slinking back to Lucio, teaming up with him again, getting him out of jail by recanting her testimony, and working to destroy Yago. After all, we have half the TN still to go.
I'm still feeling suspense about what will happen with the "wedding," but I'm really glad we didn't leave with Yago halfway down a tall building. (Though when he was upside-down and Camilo was yelling in his face, I was reminded of that scene where Spider-Man kissed Mary Jane.)
I don't see how the other guys missed that... it looked to me as though Damián was providing some sort of sign language translation for the hearing impaired.
While I realize that Ámbar was miffed at Sara for having sex with her supposed novio, Yago, I can't see why she would now feel compelled to join with said novio in such a mean and treacherous plot. After all, Sara has sacrificed throughout her life for Ámbar's well-being.
