SILVANA SIN LANA - LUNES - Parte 1 de 3

Well, I've been done in. There were no captions tonight, at least not for Silvana. The good news is that I understood a fair amount. The bad news is that lots of details went in one ear and out the other without coming near my brain. Anyway, here's a recap.

The episode starts where last Friday's left off, in Manuel's office. Vicente is asking Manuel about his relationship with Chivis and why, having ended things with Stella, Manuel is now wanting to put more distance between himself and Chivis. Manuel is not happy with Vicente's asking him about this. He tells him that from now on, he's in charge of Chivis Fish, and that's that. Vicente persists. "You don't have any friends," he tells Manuel, "you have no one to talk to." Manuel replies that he doesn't believe in being friends with his children. Vicente asks him not to be angry, "I just want to see you happy. No one knows you better than me. Count on me for whatever you need."

There's a long line of customers at Don Benito's bakery. Most are apparently there because they saw Don Benito on TV after the robbery. Don Benito calls Trini and asks her to come help him with all the customers. Juanito isn't there, he's at the doctor's. (Juanito's absence also gives Don Benito a chance to make it seem as if he (DB) had been threatened and attacked by the robbers.)

At the Fish Market, Poncho arrives dressed in his new look that includes a flowered shirt and a gold chain. He brings a bouquet of flowers for Stella. When Stella catches sight of Manuel arriving, she gives the flowers back to Poncho and tells him to give them to her again, with a romantic flourish. He does so, and she gushes on and on. Manuel watches.

Trini has come to help Don Benito deal with all his customers. One of them is clearly interested in Don Benito, calling him guapo and inviting him to dinner at her house. Trini overhears this, comes over, hands some baguettes to the woman while telling her she's muy amable and pushing her out the door. The next woman in line gets a similar treatment. Juanito returns from the doctor's and deals with the customers. Don Benito whispers to Trini that he thought she was a bit aggressive with the clients. Is she jealous? he asks. Trini of course denies it. Juanito tells Don Benito that he may be late coming to work because of something to do with exams at school. Trini assures Don Benito he needn't worry, she'll be at the bakery to help him.

Outside the school, Margarita gives Jorge one of his favorite foods. She also tells him that Don Benito wants to add some security cameras, and she asks Jorge whether he would install them. Jorge of course says yes. And Angie of course is near by overhearing the conversation and looking quite sad.

Manuel comments to Poncho on his new outfit. He says he looks like a beach cowboy (?). He also says something I didn't catch about Stella. Poncho tells him, "Don't speak badly about my novia." Manuel claims their relationship doesn't matter to him and walks off. Poncho reports to Stella that Manuel is very jealous. She's delighted.

At the bakery, Lucha and Majo run into each other. Majo asks Lucha whether she's happy that she separated her from Andrés. Lucha denies that she did so. Majo says she knows that Lucha told Andrés that she (Majo) had been unfaithful to him with Vicente. Majo claims that what Andrés hates most are gossips (chismosas) like Lucha. Lucha replies that what Andrés hates most are liars (mentirosas) like Majo.

SILVANA SIN LANA - LUNES - Parte 2 de 3

A short time later, Majo and Angie are talking in their bedroom. Majo is upset. "I can't believe all this has happened," she says. Angie asks, "What can't you believe? That our father is a swindler (estafador), or that we've had to change houses, or that you could go out with someone like Vicente?" "All the above," replies Majo. She then confesses to Angie that she has a secret: "I went to a motel with Vicente." Angie asks whether she went to bed with him. No, replies Majo. Angie then asks whether she has real feelings for Vicente. Before Majo has time to reply, they hear Chivis calling them to come downstairs.

Chivis is giving the girls the presents Antonio José sent for them. She lets them know that no, she didn't see AJ, the lawyer Rafael brought them. The only gift we get to see, or rather hear, is Lupita's. It's a recording of AJ singing a song about how how much he loves her. Lupita asks Chivis why AJ doesn't come to see them. Chivis tells her that the police are looking for him, and if they find him, they'll probably put him in jail.

Jorge has installed four security cameras at Don Benito's bakery, two inside and two outside. He also gives Don Benito a small device and tells him, "if you push this button, it will call the police, so be careful with it." [Any bets on whether DB will accidentally press it?] When Margarita leaves the room for a moment, DB tells Jorge that it's a pity he's no longer Margarita's novio, because she still cares for him a lot. I think he also urges him not to lead her on.

At the university, Lucha and Andrés run into each other. She's angry with him. "You told Majo what I said about Vicente." Andrés doesn't see why that's so important to her. He says he knows that she said what she did because she's a good friend, not a gossip. That doesn't satisfy her. She's unhappy he told Majo and unhappy that Majo made a big scene about it at the bakery. Andrés tells her that he didn't think Majo would confront her like that. Lucha angrily says, "You only think about yourself," and she leaves.

Stella and Poncho have come to a jewelry store to look for an engagement ring, part of her plan to make Manuel jealous. She sees one she likes and asks how much it is. Alas, numbers in Spanish often elude me. When Poncho hears the price, he asks whether the jeweler has anything less expensive. Stella says, "Don't be silly. We'll take it." Poncho says he'll pay for it. Stella says she will. Poncho insists he's the novio, so he'll pay. He gives the sales clerk some cash and his credit card, and tells him to let him know if that doesn't cover it.

Trini is dressed in an elegant dark outfit. Don Benito is taking her out, but he wants the location to be a surprise. Lupita asks Trini whether it's true that she saw her father. Trini tells her about encountering Antonio José. Lupita asks her whether it's true that if the police find him, he'll go to jail. Trini responds, "Let's pray that they don't find him."

Don Benito succeeds in surprising Trini: he takes the elegantly dressed woman to a bowling alley! We see him bowl a strike. He then urges Trini to try. She's reluctant, having never before gone bowling. She finally agrees, hurls the ball down the lane, and with beginner's luck gets a strike. However, she also apparently hurts one or two of her fingers.

SILVANA SIN LANA - LUNES - Parte 3 de 3

Back at Stella's, Dominique seems unimpressed with the ring. He's also troubled when he learns that Poncho has paid for it. Poncho explains that he's the novio, so he paid. Dominique warns Poncho that he's going to suffer. However, Poncho tells him, "Stella has her plan, and I have mine. And I'm going to win."

Trini and Don Benito return to Don Benito's. Her hand is still hurting. Jorge is there with Margarita. He has Trini put her hand in cold water, and then he bandages the affected fingers.

Chivis and Angie are having a discussion about Antonio José. Angie says she's very confused. On the one had, she'd like him to return, but on the other, she doesn't know how she'll face him, because she's really angry with him for what he did. Chivis admits that she, too, was very angry at first, but the anger served no point. Moreover, she tells Angie, no matter what, he is and will be your father. Angie asks what Chivis thinks will happen when he comes back. Chivis tells Angie not to get her hopes up. If Antonio José does come back, the police will find him, and he'll very likely go to prison. Angie also asks about money. Chivis tells her she won't accept any money from AJ. In fact, he sent money along with the gifts, but she refused it. Angie is surprised and pleased to hear this. She confesses that she'd always had a rather different impression of her mother as someone who plays a lot of golf, goes shopping, and worries about her nails. Chivis admits that the impression used to be true. Angie then asks Chivis whether she will go back to Antonio José. Viewerville holds its breath, but before Chivis can reply, she and Angie hear Trini arrive downstairs, and they go down to greet her.

Trini tells everyone what happened, and how fortunately Jorge was at his novia's house, and he bandaged Trini's hand. After Trini goes upstairs, Angie asks Jorge whether he's back with Margarita. Jorge tells her that Trini is mistaken, Margarita is not his novia, they're just friends.

At Stella's, Poncho tells Dominique he's thinking about the best way to propose marriage to Stella. Dominique tells Poncho he's crazy, he can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Stella comes into the room and tells Poncho, "Tomorrow, you'll propose in front of everyone at the fish market, and next week there'll be the wedding."

Silvana. Excellent recap, Juanita, even without captions! And yep, I'll bet that don Benito will accidentally press that button. This episode seemed to emphasize the comic aspects of this comedia, with both Trini and Stella/Poncho. Trini was pretty funny at the bakery chasing away potential rivals and then elegantly dressed at the bowling alley getting a strike. It's a sign of how much she cares for don Benito that she was willing to stay at the bowling alley at all, but then of course she manipulates her way out with her finger injury, which may in fact be genuine. Trini is surprisingly self-aware. She knows she's "extravagante." And the robbery and subsequent news coverage seems to have been excellent advertising for the bakery. Wonder if they'll go any farther with this robbery thread? Were those school exams or doctor's exams Juanito was talking about? I wasn't sure. I think the ring was $580, and did Poncho use 2 credit cards? I'll bet he will win in the end. In many ways Vicente is a surprisingly wise kid. I don't know if Andrés only thinks about himself, but he does seem to have a rather high opinion of himself.

Silvana. One of the characters uses the expression cabeza de chorlito which means bird brain or knucklehead. Chorlito is from a basque word for bird.

Silvana

Juanita, that's a pretty amazing recap for having no captions!

Silvana

SpanProf, thanks VERY much for your kind words and for filling in some of the many places where I drew a blank or worse. Now that I think about it, I bet you're right that it was a doctor's exam. I remember Juanito saying something about finding out the results, and it took some stretching on my part to make that work with school. But of course it makes perfect sense if he's talking about medical exams. (At my age, I'm surprised that "medical" didn't occur to me first, rather than "school." :-) )

It's possible that Poncho used two credit cards. I saw him hand over two items, and I simply assumed that he forked over all the cash he had and hoped the credit card would cover the rest. But using two credit cards seems at least as likely.

I too think that Poncho will be victorious in the end. Though whether winning Stella is a victory is another matter. :-)

Silvana

Many thanks, deb, for your very encouraging comment. For me, the one positive thing to come out of the loss of captions has been the recognition that I can manage a bit better than I thought I could. At least that was the case last night.

Also, thanks again for providing the email address for Angie Nieves. I wrote to her this morning, and I got a prompt reply. She needed a little more info, so she could contact the appropriate tech people. It's not clear, however, whether the issue will be cleared up by tonight. Oh well, I can do it, I can do it, I can do it (the little recapper that could). Ojalá.

Silvana

Juanita, I want to add my thanks to all the others you have received 4 a really good recap. It is impressive what you have been able to glean without captions. It seems that much of what you heard indeed visited your brain for you to remember what you did. I aspire to be like you one day.

Silvana

Thanks so much, Juanita. Terrific recap. Before I got a newer television I did not even have subtitles. The first novela I watched was El Privilegio de Amar in 1998. No subtitles and my Spanish was infinitely poorer than it is now. So I recorded the show on videocassettes! And I rewound and rewound until I grasped what they were saying. I think it was good for me.

I do watch now with Spanish subtitles and try not to look at them. But they come in handy when they come up with an idiom that doesn’t make sense to me or a noun I’ve never heard before. Having the word or words right there on the screen enables me to look up those words or phrases. Since I’ve taken Spanish for at least 20 years in my long-term Advanced Spanish and Lit class, there are not that many new words in telenovelas. They tend to not use esoteric terms, so mostly I don’t have to look up much.

Anyway, back to the novela. Poncho did ask for a cheaper ring. I think the first one she looked at was $1,500 and the one he bought was $580, but he handed over two credit cards and hoped the combination would get the ring bought. Poor guy. I’m sure they’re going with Stella eventually falling for him, but the whole Three Stooges plot doesn’t do much for me. I have to admit that I’m more of a fan of dramatic novelas. This is the first straight-up comedy I’ve ever recapped. Ponce and Rodríguez make it worth watching, though.

I am really tired of Margarita. And Jorge is not doing her any favors. I guess his adolescent greed is getting in the way of his good sense. She keeps preparing him his favorite foods. He appears to be too dense to realize that her offers of friendship are only a ruse to keep trying to get him back. He should stay away from her.

It’s frustrating but I can’t help but admire Chivis for deciding to spend less time with Manuel. Her code is that marriage in the church is forever, and she has to stay faithful to AJ. I can’t figure out how the writers are going to resolve this. This IS a comedy, so killing him off to free her doesn’t seem all that likely, given how much this would hurt his children.

I’m hoping my modem arrives soon. Assuming I’m hooked up, I’ll do a recap on Wednesday night. I’m posting this from work.

And, Juanita, a million thanks for doing my night as well as your own!!!

SILVANA:

Great job! I only watched with one eye last night, so the recap was very helpful.

I have a question about Jaunito. How old is he supposed to be? He looks high school age (and I've often wondered why Margarita doesn't see him as a bf option). But he's always working in the bakery, when someone his age should be in school or home sleeping/studying.

General

The whole caption/non-caption thing is frustrating. I have DirecTV and always have them, so I don't understand why they come and go for some of you. And I would think Telemundo, based in Miami, would have a vested interest in making sure that English captions especially are available to hook new viewers who may not even speak or understand Spanish.

GENERAL:

I don't use captions, but I have noticed for the last few days that my Telemundo station is not showing in HD. It's showing in standard definition and not filling the whole screen. I think they are having some larger issues that aren't limited to the captions.

Silvana

Juanita - Thank you for the recap! You did a great job, especially without captions.

I'm off to watch this episode right now. . .

My local community Telemundo station is still off the air, due to a lightning strike to their transmitter late last week. So, these recaps are precious to me.

Thank you to all the recappers!

Silvana

If Juanito has a thing for Luchita, then they're probably about the same age, 20-ish?

Good for Don Benito for telling Jorge to not lead on Margarita. Not that she wouldn't follow with only the slightest encouragement, but for someone as mature as he is, he's being very stupid about her. She's clearly trying to win him back so how can he not see that? And if he's willing to go back to her because Angie is making him wait, then he's not as good as I thought. It's been, what, two days? And what's with NEEDING to have a girlfriend. Be single for a bit, Jorge. It won't kill you. You're not Vicente.

Got to give Trini credit. She's a snot, but is still willing to step up and help when needed. She was cleaning at the house, and now working at the bakery? Good for her, even if she'd hide behind the baguettes if someone from the old neighborhood walked in. And I thought she looked great in that hat!

SILVANA:

Thanks Kelly. I didn't know Juanito has a crush on Luchita. Although, just because a girl is a few years older, never stopped a boy from having a crush. He almost looks younger than Jorge, to me. ITA with you about Jorge and leading Margarita on!

Captions are completely off again in the DC area -- at least they are for SILVANA. Yesterday, they disappeared for SIN SENOS, but reappeared for the 10 PM show. Crazy, crazy!

Juanita,

I posted an answer to you a week ago, but I don't know if you saw it. I'm having email security issues that need resolving before I take up on your email invite.

Mary, that's SO interesting. I guess it's geographic, as opposed to whatever service you have: cable, satellite, or just plain network TV. As I said before, I've never lost captions here in the San Francisco Bay Area, although, when I watched Univision novelas, the captions there were HORRIBLE. They weren't synched properly with what the actor was saying, sometimes appearing on screen either before or after the characters had spoken.

SILVAVA

I think Jorge is a bit dense and clueless when it comes to girls. Having Margarita chasing him is feeding his ego and he might not even realize that, while he dies not realize he us encouraging Margarita. We had to intervene, a looong time ago, when our son was in high school and in a similar situation. We sat him down and explained how his behavior was leading a girl on and it needed to stop, for her sake. Too bad Jorge is not getting the same parental talk, but then Manuel has no idea about Jorge's harem.

Sorry for the typos...darned tablet auto correct is my enema.....

Silvana

In general. Telemundo English captions when available are far superior to those appearing on Univision telenovelas. They are better synchronized with the onscreen action.

SILVANA SIN LANA - MARTES - Parte 1 de 3

Well, the captions still weren't on, and I felt somewhat more at sea tonight than last night. Perhaps as a result, this recap may be a little shorter.

We again see Stella tell Poncho that he should propose to her in front of everyone at the Fish Market the next day, and that the wedding will take place the following week. Dominique asks Stella how long she's going to continue with this farce. She's not interested in his criticism, she's thinking only about how jealous Manuel will feel when he sees Poncho ask Stella to marry him.

Jorge and Vicente have a brotherly talk in their bedroom. Vicente tells Jorge that something strange is happening with Majo. The way he says it makes Jorge ask whether Vicente is in love with her. Vicente says that love is a curse word (palabrota). Jorge isn't all that impressed with Majo. He tells Vicente that Angie is serious, real, she thinks about things, whereas Majo is superficial, nothing matters to her. Vicente says that Majo is fragile, sensitive, and he likes that. He tells Jorge that he took Majo to a motel, but nothing happened. Although he doesn't say the word, he makes it clear that Majo is a virgin. Jorge is astonished, since she'd been going with Andrés for three years. Vicente assures Jorge that nothing happened, and they came home. Jorge again says, "Oh my God, you're in love! For the first time!" Jorge goes downstairs, and Vicente takes out photos of Majo and considers the possibility that he's in love.

At night, Lupita comes into Chivis' bedroom, goes to the window leading to the balcony, and seems to send a signal by turning a large flashlight on and off. Chivis wakes up and asks Lupita what she's doing. Lupita tells her she can't sleep. Are you having nightmares? Chivis asks. "I'm having real-life nightmares," responds Lupita. She asks Chivis whether she can sleep with her. The two of them lie in bed together and Lupita talks about her father, whom she thinks of as Superman.

Once Lupita is asleep, Chivis goes out on the balcony. Manuel was just about to give up and go inside when she appears. She tells him that she has a lot to think about right now concerning her daughters. "Did you tell them about their father?" Manuel asks. Yes, Chivis replies, but she says she'd prefer not to talk about that with Manuel. Manuel tells her that he missed her a lot, and he asks whether she missed him. "I too think of you," says Chivis, but soon she's telling him that she misses him a lot. Neither she nor Manuel notice that Majo is standing inside Chivis' bedroom at the balcony window. Once Manuel has gone into his bedroom, Majo comes out and asks her mother why she tells Manuel that she thinks of him, given the fact that her husband may return at any moment.

Back in the bedroom, Chivis lies to Majo. She tells her that she was talking about missing Manuel at work. Majo isn't buying this. "I'm not Lupita, stop telling me tales." What was developing into an ugly scene is interrupted by cries from Trini. They go to see what's the matter. The finger Trini hurt at the bowling alley is bothering her. Chivis looks at it and sees that it's swollen. She tells Trini she should have it seen by a doctor at the Central Hospital. Trini is horrified. A public hospital? No way!

Angie goes next door to ask Lucha whether she'd have a look at Trini's finger. Lucha comes over, along with Manuel, who apparently will use any excuse to be near Chivis. Lucha examines the finger and tells Trini that she should go to the Central Hospital to have a doctor look at it. Trini again expresses her horror at the concept of going to a public hospital, but Manuel assures her he'll go with her and make sure that all goes well.

SILVANA SIN LANA - MARTES - Parte 2 de 3

At Stella's, Poncho, still dressed in his new look, tells Stella he wants to go dancing. Does she want to go with him? He tells her he's going to go no matter what. Stella says she'll go.

Andrés comes to see Lucha. He brings her a present, a flash drive containing all of Tarantino's films. She's pleased. Vicente comes downstairs, and he and Andrés get into an argument. I'm afraid I couldn't follow what they were saying.

Angie and Majo talk about the possible return of their father. Angie says she doesn't know what will happen when he comes back. After all, he defrauded lots of people, including his friends. And he left his family without a word. Majo objects that he and Chivis were together for many years and should have learned forgiveness. Majo also tells Angie that she heard Chivis say "I miss you (te extraño) to Manuel.

At the hospital, Trini is impatient at having to wait. [I've got to say, the waiting room was a lot neater, quieter, and less crowded than any hospital waiting room I've ever seen.] Trini's turn finally comes. She apparently has a first-degree sprain (esguince de primer grado). This is the least serious sprain.

Pancho and Stella are dancing. It looks as if they've danced with each other often, since all their moves are well coordinated. They look rather good together. At one point, Poncho kisses Stella and tells her did so because he spotted Vicente, though he can't point him out now.

Jorge has come to Don Benito's to see why the security cameras weren't working. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it looked as if they weren't plugged in, turned on, or something equally lame. While he's there, Margarita tries to kiss him, but he says no. She winds up kissing him on the cheek.

As Stella and Poncho are returning from the dance hall, Stella spots Manuel's truck (he's returning from the hospital with Trini and Chivis). She insists that Poncho catch up to the truck. As the car pulls up next to the truck, Stella calls out to Manuel. I think she says that Poncho and she are lost, and does Manuel remember the name of his favorite motel. She keeps on like this for a while, with Manuel replying "I dont know" to each of her questions. Finally, he drives off, and Stella is very pleased, since she assumes that Manuel was both jealous and embarrassed.

At Lucha's, Lucha asks Andrés whether he thinks there can be friendship between a woman and a man. He says yes, he thinks so.

From the window, Majo sees Andrés leave. She comes out to confront him. "Are you Lucha's novio?" He really doesn't want to talk to Majo. He finally tells her to grow up, and he leaves.

Trini calls Don Benito. He asks about her hand, and he says that Juanito will not be at the bakery the next day. DB guesses, however, that she won't be able to come because of her hand. Apparently her hand won't stop her. Lupita comes into the room as Trini is talking, and Trini says something to her and calls her mi amor. Don Benito thinks Trini was speaking to him when she said that.

Chivis tells Angie and Majo that she doesn't know what will happen when Antonio José returns. Majo tells her that if she separates from AJ, she (Majo) will feel horrible. Chivis describes why she's feeling so uncertain about AJ. Majo says it's very convenient for you to say that my father defrauded people and left us without a word and without any money--so now you have an excuse to turn to the neighbor. Chivis slaps her. Chivis is horrified by what she has done; I on the other hand cheer loudly.

SILVANA SIN LANA - MARTES - Parte 3 de 3

In their bedroom, Angie and Majo talk about the situation. Majo says she's sure Chivis is having a relationship with Manuel. Angie says she doesn't know what her mother is going to do, but if she decides in the future to separate from their father, the only thing they can do is support her. Majo says she can't support her. Her mother is separating from her father to go with... a fish seller! (vendedor de pescado) Majo also blames the situation for making her to drop out of the university. She's depressed, she can't concentrate. [Apparently she's forgotten that she told her mother when they were still rich and living in Coral Gables that she didn't want to continue at the university.] Her cell phone signals the arrival of a text message. Angie asks who sent it. Majo tells her it's not her concern.

Lupita comes downstairs in the middle of the night. Flashlight in hand, she goes to the window, apparently keeping watch for her father. Majo comes downstairs and convinces Lupita that their father wouldn't be coming here at this hour. Lupita goes upstairs to go to bed, but she makes Majo promise that if he comes, she'll wake her up. As soon as Lupita has gone upstairs, Majo goes to the window and then opens the door. She and Vicente embrace.

Belated thanks to everyone who thanked me for Monday's recap. Yesterday was a chaotic day for me, and I didn't get much opportunity to read the comments here in the afternoon or evening. Novelera, I was interested in your description of your early telenovela watching. Actually, I use a somewhat modified version of what you did, at least when I recap. I still have and use a videocassette recorder, and I record the episode. Then, if I'm recapping, I first watch the episode and then watch it again on the VCR, occasionally going over and over a particular scene until I understand what was said or it totally defeats me. Then I write the recap.

Helen, no one has ever said before that they hoped their Spanish would some day be as good as mine, and probably no one ever will again, but for that very reason, your comment gave me immense pleasure. ¡Muchísimas gracias!

Silvana

Juanita - Thank you for the recap! I hope your local network gets the cc's sorted out. What a pain! The actors speak so fast that I cannot figure out half of what they say without captions.

Trini is just unbelievable, making such a fuss over a sprained finger, and a Grade 1 at that. Pu-leeze!
Why the doctors gave her antibiotics is beyond me.

As much as I cannot stand Majo, she does look great in that grey off-the-shoulder top and necklace. Gray definitely is her color.

Lucha y Andrés discussing 'can a guy and a girl be just friends?' --- have you kids not ever watched When Harry Met Sally?

It will be interesting to see how the writers will bring this show to a close, and who will end up with who.

Silvana

Thanks very much, doris, for your good wishes for the return of my cc's. Apparently your good wishes are VERY powerful: after reading your message, I went to check Telemundo again, and THE CAPTIONS ARE BACK!! ¡Por fin!

I too wonder about who will wind up paired at the end. Chivis and Manuel is a no-brainer. I can't say I'm wild about the other likely couples: of those, I guess I like Jorge and Angie best. Majo and Vicente are a likely pair, but I think their marriage might encounter a lot of bumps along the way. Majo in particular seems absurdly immature. I guess Don Benito and Trini, since he seems to have a skin thick enough to withstand her constant nasty remarks and occasional mistreatment. Lucha and Andrés? Eh. Yawn. As for cutesy Lupita and Pedrito, well, ask me in five years, when they'll still be too young. And then there's Stella and Poncho. Yes, Poncho's plan will probably win, but whether getting Stella can be described as winning isn't at all clear, at least not to me.

Silvana. Great recap, Juanita! Are you sure you need captions? I didn't particularly follow Andrés's and Vicente's argument either, and I have captions and am fluent in Spanish. Hashtag, it was boring. Regarding the uncrowded waiting room (in a public hospital in a large city, no less!), maybe the producers didn't want to pay for all the extras necessary for a crowded waiting room. Majo is completely delusional about her father. He's a particularly creepy kind of criminal who cheated other people and abandoned his family. Even without Manuel it's unlikely that Chivis would take him back. And I thought of another solution. If Antonio José was already engaged in criminal activities when Chivis married him, and he didn't tell her about them, she'd be eligible for an annulment. I have a sister-in-law who was in a similar situation in her first marriage--evidently husband #1 was in a business that was essentially a front for the mob (believe it or not!). She was terrified when she found out, fled with her children and was able to get a church annulment. Of course, the word "mafia" may have been sort of magical for the Vatican. :) I hope Majo had sense enough to formally withdraw from the university--so as not to be left with an entire semester full of F's on her transcript. And again, if she's not in school, she should be the one working, not Angie.

Silvana

SpanProf, you've made my day/week/month/year! ¡Muchísimas gracias!

The story about your cousin is quite fascinating. It does offer an interesting solution to Chivis' married-for-life problem. I wonder, though, whether AJ could have been involved in such doings for more than 20 years with no telltale signs.

Silvana. Juanita: In telenovelaland all things are possible! :)

Silvana

SpanProf, your comment perfectly matched my reaction. Majo is a complete brat.

Thanks so much, Juanita. You ARE fluent. You got it all. The argument between Vicente and Andrés was inconsequential. More of the same, mostly Vicente being macho brother about Andy spending time with his sister.

I do something similar when recapping and using my DVR. Having DirecTV is a big plus because I get two feeds of Telemundo: East Coast and West Coast. So, while I'm still at work or on the freeway, the DVR is recording the 5:00 CA time of Silvana. It's there when I get home. I watch it once all the way through, then watch it again writing things down, fast forwarding after I've got the gist of what I want to say about a particular scene. If I just watch once and write, I end up writing too much because I can't so easily separate the wheat from the chaff that way. I bring home discarded printed pieces of paper from work that would go in the recycling and write on the backs of them with a fountain pen. The fountain pen makes writing SO much easier. Then I move to the computer in the spare room and type it in Word.

I loved what Chivis said to Majo - the cold hard truth of her beloved father having left them flat with no money and no explanation after having defrauded other people. And blaming her not attending college on her mother, please. Lucha, annoying in her own special way, has it right calling Majo cabeza hueca. I also cheered the slap and then felt bad about myself. No one really should slap their child. I did it myself once long, long ago and felt horrible for days.

SpanProf, I like the annulment idea. There's GOT to be away for Chivis to get away from the repugnant AJ and somehow have things square with the (I think) largely Roman Catholic viewers of TN's.

I should be able to recap tonight. If things aren't set up properly, I'll type it up in word and then do the recap the next day from work. I do have a farewell dinner tonight for a couple who have been active in our neighborhood association. I'll try to keep the wine to a minimum! They are taking a year off from their real lives, renting out their house, and going to Ghana for a charitable project that has to do with maximizing water resources.

Silvana

thanks so much for the recap Juanita, that's really wonderful of you to make it happen even with no captions, I just wouldn't have been able to do it.

my biggest problems with the captions over the years is that no one seems to care, but I think you'll find that with Telemundo showing up on the station's doorstep every time, they will take notice.

I really should comment more with Silvana because you are all doing such a fine job, it's just that I am watching Sin Senos Si and that it is so well done and gets so intense some times, it leaves me speechless.

Silvana
" Yes, Poncho's plan will probably win, but whether getting Stella can be described as winning isn't at all clear, at least not to me."
Okay..... that made me laugh out loud. Poor Poncho.... not winning but getting his dreams met would be a more accurate description? I'm starting to think Dom is the smartest of those three musketeers.

SpanProf - annulment would be the best way and I like the mafia angle. It would have to be annulment or death because the writers made the point to have her say they were married in the Church.
Maybe AJ's "investors" will have him swimming with the fishies, wearing concrete boots. Or,,, AJ could conveniently get run over by a bus, and even better if there is a life insurance policy with premiums paid on time.

Majo is a mini-me version of Trini. Okay.... not really "mini" but you get the idea. Shallow.

Which begs the question --- if Majo dropped out of university (I, too, was wondering if she formally withdrew or just quit going), why isn't that girl working??? They could use the extra money. Her family has no health insurance right now.

SILVANA

Yes, just when I think MaJo isn't all that bad, she proves that she is. If she has dropped out of college, she needs to start working stat. Poor Angie is still in high school.
Andres and Lucha are the perfect example of good-looking but boring as all get out! They are perfect for one another, in my opinion. Someone mentioned his palatial home. I had noticed that too, and assumed he is independently wealthy/ a trust fund kid. Which probably explains Trini thinking he was great! I guess Iit is good that he still works, I guess, and in the medical education field too, even though he doesn't need the money.

Silvana

Many thanks, deb, for your kind remarks. And yes, I think Telemundo is becoming more responsive. I think I heard from three separate people from Telemundo today. Alas, I spoke too soon about the captions being back on. They're off again, but a Telemundo engineer assured me that the problem should be fixed by tomorrow morning. Ojalá.

Silvana

Muchas gracias, novelera, for your complimentary remarks. I'm afraid I'm far from fluent, but I do think that watching the novelas and, especially, recapping, have helped.

I'm delighted that you'll be doing a recap tonight. I'm especially impresed and grateful that you're willing to do it in spite of having a lot of other stuff on your plate.

Silvana

Thanks for the recaps, Juanita!

Vicente seems to be slowly maturing (unless he's around Andres), but Majo not so much.

I think the opening credits gave away all the couples from the very first episode, even before the characters actually met. I don't mind the predictability though. I find most of the characters entertaining.

SILVANA – MIÉRCOLES – Parte 1 de 2

Maria José goes to the door to greet Vicente. He embraces her. She tells him her litany of woes: Her father has returned; she’s sure her mother has something going on with someone else; and she and her mother had a huge fight. Vicente tells her that her mother is buena gente and, whatever happens between her parents, she shouldn’t stick her nose in. He goes on to say that, if they do separate, what she should do is help her mother, who’s done so much for them. And, touchingly, he says that her mother [unlike his, although he doesn’t say this] is alive. Bravo, Vicente!

Idiot Stella calls Manuel from home and, on the pretext of thanking him for confirming the location, says she’s in the motel with Poncho.

In the morning everyone else in the family takes off and Silvana and María José have a true mother and daughter talk. They both apologize. MJ (doubtless influenced by Vicente’s remarks) thanks her mother for her strength.

Stella swans into Manuel’s office to crow about the supposed night of passion she had with Poncho. Manuel keeps trying to ward her off and telling her he doesn’t want these details. She, of course, interprets this as jealousy.

Trini is working at the bakery [!!] again. She has her back turned to the counter when Lucha comes in. She makes some snide remarks about Lucha being after Andrés and that they’re from different classes. Lucha tells her that she’s not in the class who puts cuernos on a boyfriend!

We are treated to the whole crazy marriage proposal in the middle of the Fish Market, with Manuel and Chivis looking on.

At school, Jorge approaches Angie and tells her he’s been thinking things through and it doesn’t make any sense for him to keep trying. He says that the train has left the station for them and he can’t keep on with the illusion.

Stella again comes into Manuel’s office. He greets her as “the bride of the year”. She keeps insinuating he’s jealous. She asks him to be the padrino at her wedding! [It means godfather but also sponsor. I’m a bit fuzzy about the whole padrino madrina thing. I’ve been to Mexican weddings in the Bay Area where padrinos and madrinos buy certain things at the wedding – say the champagne goblets, flowers, other accessories for the wedding.] Not sure where Manuel would fit into this.

Stella asks Manuel if he’s happy that she’s happy. He says he is, of course. Then she asks how his heart is because, the truth is, that if it were the reverse and he were marrying someone else, she’d be destroyed and try to interrupt the wedding.

Trini discovers that Don Benito has been running a tab at the bakery for the neighbors. She’s lecturing him about this when a couple of detectives show up looking for Silvana. Trini lies, saying that no one with a classy name like that lives in this neighborhood! Don Benito backs her up.

SILVANA – MIÉRCOLES – Parte 2 de 2

We get a scene of the two creeps, Antonio José and Rafael the crooked lawyer. AJ is playing a video game. Rafael tells him Chivis refused the money. AJ smugly says that she’s beautiful and that she depends on him for everything. Rafael tells him she’s been working at the Fish Market.

After the detectives leave Trini tells DB that she lied about the fire at the mansion and that her son-in-law has defrauded people. He looks at her shocked and says that she lied to him. She leaves and he doesn’t stop her.

Stella makes a big scene of cleansing herself by apologizing to Chivis. She then asks for her help in picking out a wedding dress!

Angie is sobbing in the bathroom when MJ is knocking on the door. MJ tries to comfort her sister. Angie regrets being so stubborn. She tells her sister what Jorge said. She thinks that she’s become bitter because of what her father did and that she’s lost Jorge forever.

Jorge comes to the bakery and Margarita pops up like a jack in the box. She invites him to study with her and she’ll feed him as well. Passive as always, he goes right along with this.

MJ confesses to Angie that she flunked the semester for not going to class. Angie is very upset, asking her how she could be so irresponsible. MJ trots out her excuse for everything: if her father hadn’t done what he did. Angie doesn’t buy this, saying that MJ did the same thing before. The difference was that her father was around to pay for her changing to another university. Angie also tells MJ that she needs to tell her mother what has happened.

Chivis comes out of the Fish Market and finds a note from AJ on her windshield. He apologizes for her having to work in a place like this, says all will soon be as it was before, and that he loves her.

Don't forget, the 9 & 10 PM programs will be preempted for fútbol on Friday night.

Silvana

thanks so much novelera!

I particularly enjoyed your insightful comments about the story (such as, "doubtless influenced by Vicente’s remarks")

I was waiting to see Trini find her name on the IOU list maybe the $500+ one she mentioned, and when she left she took the apron she was wearing.

hard to tell if Manuel is jealous or not, a little I suppose for the long time he was friends (w/ benefits) with Stella, but I think the real deal breaker is that both Manuel and Chivis are single parents with families which is pulling them together.

Silvana. Great recap, novelera! I totally agree about Vicente. Bravo! Trini seems to be maturing. She's not only helping out selling in the bakery but is now helping with the bookkeeping. Shé's probably paid off in work hours the cost of all the bread and pastries don Benito gave her. And even though don Benito was upset that she had lied to him about why she and her family were living in that neighborhood, finally leveling with him is a sign that she's becoming a more mature responsible person. Antonio José has no idea of who and what Chivis is now--what a self-sufficient, hard working and worthwhile person she has become. Lot of good changes in some of the female characters. With some exceptions, of course. Wow! MJ didn't withdraw from the university but was kicked out for lack of attendance and that had happened before--causing her to change universities, Chances are she does have a semester full of F's--depending on the school policies. That young woman definitely needs to get a job!

Silvana

Since I couldn't do Monday, I'll do another tonight, length depending on my energy level.

Silvana

novelera - Thank you for the recap!

When Poncho was praying to the Virgin Mary, asking that stella fall in love with him, I kept shaking my head thinking "Watch what you pray for, Poncho, you just might get it!" (ack)

The background/theme music for Majo and Vicente is really nice; it sounds like something form a Hallmark or LIfetime movie. I'm going to pay attention to each "couple's" background music to see who has some, and who doesn't. MaCente's sounds (to me) like they'll end up together.

SILVANA

Thanks so much for all the recaps, y'all! I'd be so lost without them.
I thought it was funny when Dominique suggested that Stella and Poncho release an "intimate" video, like Kim Kardashian! Great idea, just so long as viewerville doesn't have to get an eyeful!

Agree that AJ has no clue whom he's now dealing with in Chivis! Trophy wife no more.

Silvana

Thanks so much, novelera, for another excellent recap. I really needed it, since the captions were off again, and apparently so was my brain. Your recap made me see how much I missed. And thanks, too, for your discussion of padrino. I knew the definition "godfather," but that clearly wasn't applicable here.

Needless to say, I'm delighted that you've offered to do another recap tonight. The captions came back for a short time this morning, but they're gone again. Apparently a storm in the Washington DC area a few weeks ago caused problems to Telemundo's main satellite dish in the area (which explains why people living elsewhere have not been affected). The problem comes and goes. Telemundo is hard at work trying to get everything back to normal, but it's taking more time than they expected. I must say, however, that I've been impressed with how responsive Telemundo has been when I contacted them.
