Yago #62: Trojan Trunk

Flashback: Proud papa Camilo watches a puppet show being put on by pre-teen Julia. He tells her that she is the best thing that ever happened to him. Julia thought that honor belonged to her mother. Camilo concedes that Julia is the best thing that her mother left him. Julia wonders if he doesn’t consider getting married again. Camilo remembers being jilted at the altar and the deadly consequences. He tells Julia that he doesn’t believe he’ll ever find someone else as special, lovely, and talented as her mother. Julia wants first dibs at holding his bride’s train and throwing the rice. Camilo hugs his (stolen) baby-girl.

In the present, Camilo gets himself looking spiffy for his wedding. He looks at a picture of himself and Julia and tells her that he has finally found someone he wants to marry. He’s interrupted by one of his security guys, who tells him Sara wants to see him urgently.

In her room, Sara is still in her white negligee and robe, although her hair is done. She looks pensive as she stares at herself in the mirror and reads an old note from Omar: “Say yes, and make me happy.”- O. She crumples the note and seems to come to a decision, just as Camilo enters. She tells him she has something very important to tell him, and he gets worried that she wants to back out. “I need you to listen to me until the end, because it’s something that’s life or death.” We don’t get to hear what she tells Camilo, but when she finishes she begs his forgiveness, says she didn’t know how to tell him before, and that she was really scared. Camilo takes her hand, kisses it and says each day she surprises him anew. Sara understands if he never trusts her again.
C: Now I trust you more than ever.
S: I would do anything to not lose you, Camilo. I even wrote the corniest vows in history.
C: Vows? (Being new at this marriage thing, Camilo is clueless.)
S: You didn’t write me vows, Camilo Michel?

Camilo looks like a little boy called out for not doing his homework, and admits his ignorance. He promises Sara that he’s going to get right on writing her THE most romantic vows ever. He tells her he would die without her and that he loves her. She strokes his cheeks and gives him a smile as a reward.

Meanwhile, somewhere along the route to Casa Camilo, Team Yago (plus additional muscle) ambush the wedding musicians. They take their clothes and their vans, and give them a huge stack of bills in compensation. Teo hides among the other muscle dressed as musicians, while Yago and Abel fold themselves into music instrument trunks. All the guns also get hidden in instrument cases, in case they get frisked.

Camilo writes his vows as he remembers moments with Sara. “I thought that my life was complete, that I would always be alone and that I was fine with that. But then you arrived. This second opportunity startled me. I cede my will. I can’t resist falling into your abyss. I surrender. I’m yours. My life without you, Sara, would be worse than death.” Lucio interrupts, and Camilo tells him they have to reinforce the wedding security. He has Lucio follow him.

Sara is now in her plain Jane wedding dress. (Seriously, of the gorgeous gowns she tried on, she chooses THIS one? Her choices in wedding attire obviously reflect her enthusiasm for marriage.) She stares into the mirror once more, with a morose expression. She first sees a vision of Omar standing behind her. He disappears as soon as she turns to look. When she gazes into the mirror again, she sees Yago staring at her intently as Ximena embraces and kisses him. The wedding planner comes in to check on her, and to tell her to save her tears for the actual ceremony.

Camilo’s men check the music van for bombs, with mirrors and dogs. Then they demand that Teo open the back and show them what’s inside the trunks supposedly containing instruments-- where we see Yago and Abel crouching and sweating bullets. Teo moves slowly to open the trunk, when Lucio comes to save the day. Lucio hustles the other guards along, and sends the “musicians” on their way. They unload the van, supervised by Lucio, as Camilo smokes a cigar and smiles in their direction. The big trunks are taken into a bodega, where Lucio sets Abel and Yago free. He says he’s now done his part and the rest is up to them, and leaves. Abel has a bit of a freak out thinking about possibly dying and leaving Julia and his child alone. Yago assures him he has his back. They then look for the guns Lucio promised to have stashed in the bodega. Instead, they find microphones and cameras, and realize that Lucio has set them up. As they try to leave the bodega, they are surrounded from both sides by Camilo, Lucio and their men. Lucio tells them not to take it personally. Business is business. Camilo thanks Lucio for the great wedding present.

Camilo and Lucio walk Yago and Abel back into the bodega at gunpoint. Abel calls Lucio an a**hole as he taunts him, while Yago asks what was Lucio’s price. “My freedom.” Yago calls him an idiot, and points out that Camilo’s just going to kill Lucio after Yago and Abel are dispatched. Camilo gloats that Yago LOST, he’s a LOSER, just like his mentor. Then he reveals he knows Yago is Omar. “Sara doesn’t love you!” Camilo reveals that Sara was the one who told him about the plot to take him out at the wedding, and we finally get to see what she revealed to him shortly before the wedding. She claims they threatened to hurt her if she didn’t go along, but she ALWAYS wanted to tell Camilo. Yomar refuses to believe it. Camilo breaks it down for Yomar. Sara will ALWAYS do what’s most convenient for HER, and choose the side of the WINNERS. She only cares about herself. She loves NOONE! Camilo knows the deal, even if Yomar is a blind fool when it comes to Sara. “While you’re going to get the milk, I’ve already made the quesadillas!” He chuckles at his own joke, then coldly orders Lucio to kill them.

Camilo assures them that there will be no bodies for the police to find. When Yago points out that Julia will hate him for it, Camilo counters that he’s already lost Julia. He orders Lucio to kill Abel first. Yago tries to reason with Lucio. “We’re all brothers. Put down the gun!” Abel dares him to do it and asks if he’s really going to kill his compañere. BOOM! Lucio shoots a bullet at close range, right into Abel’s chest. He collapses to the ground as Yago falls to his friend’s side. Camilo orders Lucio to leave Yago alive. It’s his wedding present to Sara. We see the rest of their pre-wedding conversation. Sara requests that Camilo leave Yago alive, so that he can see them get married and suffer, just as she did when he jilted her on their wedding day and announced his engagement to her sister. Camilo relishes telling Yago this, and asks/orders him to accompany them to the house for the ceremony, which will be followed by Yago having to face the D.A. as escaped prisoner Omar Guerrero.

Camilo reports his success to Sara. The wedding planner goes on about it being bad luck for the groom to see the bride. “From now on, we won’t have bad luck… I’ll make all your dreams reality.”

Lucio checks in with the guys who run the security surveillance, and tells them to get rid of all traces of Abel on the security tapes right now-- which will require taking the cameras offline. He’ll see about getting rid of the body. Meanwhile, Yago is marched to a balcony overlooking the courtyard where the wedding will take place and the guests are already seated. The civil ceremony is swift. After the certificate is signed, the justice of the peace asks the novios to recite their personal vows. Camilo fumbles with the vows he wrote just hours ago, and quips, “It’s easier to make millions of dollars than to tell the woman I love how much I love her.” Sara gently tucks the vows back into his pocket and tells him she already knows how much he loves her. Then she launches into her own vows, as she stares at Yago the entire time.

“I want to speak of true love. The kind of love that never ends and doesn’t deplete us. The kind of love where you hope for the best, and receive the worst. The kind of love that makes you build the greatest dreams, and at the same time makes you do the worst things. The kind of love that doesn’t end and will never make you betray it. The kind of love that is unique and marvelous, because it’s more important than life itself.”

Camilo is touched, but Sara breaks his bubble, and shocks the guests when she tells him she wasn’t speaking about him. “My true love is up there, and his name is Yago. And it’s for him that I’m doing all of this. It’s for him that I married you—the man I most hate in the world, the man who most repulses me. The man who was capable of killing his best friend and the woman he loved the most, my father, my sister. And now the whole world is going to learn the kind of person you really are, Camilo. Did you think I really loved you? Did you really think someone in this world could love you?”  Camilo pries himself out of Sara’s tight grasp on his arm, tells everyone that the party is over, and retreats quickly to the house. His guards spring into action to clear out the guests, and leave Yago unguarded. Lucio smirks in appreciation at Sara, while Yago looks on disbelieving from the balcony.

Camilo is trying to calm himself in his bedroom, unable to believe that he has once again been humiliated at the altar, when a ghost emerges from the shadows. No, not a ghost. It’s Abel, and he’s very much alive and has a gun! He points the gun at Camilo and tells him he feels more alive than ever. Abel reveals to Camilo and to Viewerville, that this was all pre-planned by the four ex-amigos during their rooftop tryst. Yago, the mastermind, convinced the others that they needed to sow false leads and get Camilo to think they were willing to betray each other. Abel points out the problem of powerful men like Camilo- they think they are smarter than everyone else. But now, HE’S the loser! Camilo indeed looks defeated, and says, “I always lose. I lost Fidel. I lost Selma. I lost Julia. And now my wife.” He demands to know how much Abel wants to set him free. Abel will not be bought. He reveals more of the plan—the shutdown of the cameras while Lucio told Abel the coast was clear and he could shimmy out of his bulletproof vest and get into the house. The SUICIDE NOTE (aka wedding vows) Camilo so conveniently already wrote. “All the women you ever loved ended up betraying you or hating you. This is for Fidel, Selma, Ambar, and most of all, for Julia. She asked me to do it. You have to pay for the death of her parents.”  Abel calls Yago, and puts him on speaker phone so that Camilo can hear him. Yago tells Camilo he’s finished. As Fidel would say, checkmate!

Unfortunately, while Yago was speaking, Abel took his eyes off Camilo, who pulls out his own gun and makes Abel put down his. He corners Abel with the gun, and it looks like it’s curtains for our rat-tailed friend. Abel closes his eyes, preparing for the end. Camilo tells him that he’s going to gift Abel his perfect crime, points the gun, then raises it to his own head and shoots! Camilo falls lifeless against the satin sheets of the bed, to the floor. Abel looks frustrated that he didn’t get the satisfaction of doing it himself, and spits on Camilo’s corpse before slipping out.

Sara and the guards run in. She feigns being horrified and points out the “suicide note” to the shocked guards.

Yago sees a vision of Fidel and Selma, who nod and smile and show him they are now at peace. Sara stops him on the stairs as he’s leaving. She asks if he truly prefers to be with Ximena, even in spite of everything?  Yago wordlessly steps around her and keeps on walking.

-End of episode.

Whoa! Really, Steve? Are you sure he's dead? Or is it going to be one of those things where he falls down "dead," and then the next night he gets up and says "hey, who left that banana peel on the floor?"

Wow! An absolutely brilliant episode! It could be used as a model for aspiring TN writers (or just for aspiring writers). You have a juicy one to look forward to, ladies.

Hey! Where have you been, NovelaMaven?? Good to see you here.

Thanks, Julie! I'm around but my timing is usually off. I've been watching the show and reading the recaps a few days after the fact, but that doesn't make either of them less splendid. I'm grateful to the Yago team for seeing this one through and with such aplomb. While it may not be a flawless show, it comes pretty damn close, I think. :)

Julie: I really hope that Hernan is dead because I'm really afraid for Katia & Teo.

Hello All. First, thank you for your efforts recapping this novela. I've always been behind because of the time changes, channel changes, weird time slots until this week where I powered through the last couple of weeks in time for the finale.

The thing that stuck with me about Camilo's suicide were the minutes leading up to it when he was with Abel.

He really fell for Sara and she broke him, just like Omar. If anyone should know how he felt, it should've been Yago since he was in his shoes once.

But even more than that, the moment when Camilo looked up at Abel and screamed "I'm the one who has lost everything!" and it stuck me as so so hard because despite all he has done, this is a man who did lose everything that he loved, probably more than anyone else.

He lost his best friend, his fiancee, his daughter, his new wife. I understand all he has done ultimately led to this but wow! the writers really struck gold with this novela. Even the most reputable human being can have at least one moment when you, at least, feel pity in spite of everything.

While Fidel got Selma, the Yago team, Julia (at the end), Camilo essentially ended up with nothing.

Recap is up! Wow! That was quite the episode!

I agree Superalfie. I felt for Camillo, even after everything, every terrible thing he has done, I still felt bad.

Now we are left with our starting four. Where do they go from here? How do we get Lucio to admit the truth about Ambar and Selma?

Four hours worth of episodes to resolve things between the original four now that the Fidel-Camilo storyline is wrapped up. It's really up to Lucio outing himself as the killer of Selma and Ambar. Then it's a toss up as to who will kill him for it-- Yago, Abel or Sara?

Hey NovelaMaven and Superalfie! Long time no see. I'm so glad you guys are caught up and can join us for the last week.

NovelaMaven- ITA that this episode was brilliant. It kept surprising me at every twist and turn.

I felt pity for Camilo as he realized he had once again been humiliated. But whenever I think about how he killed those two little boys and Ambar so callously, I don't feel any sympathy for him. At least he dies having experienced 20+ years of pure love from Julia, and has the knowledge that she and his grandchild will live. What more can a monster like him hope for or expect? That's more than many others have.

Wow! I dont know what Univision was thinking. Despite the immense amount of gore, this telenovela has kept me guessing more than any other. I was incredibly engrossed tonight and i congratulate these writers. I'm exhausted mentally and physically from this episode. I hope i dont incorporate any of this in my dreams tonight. Interestingly, I think Sara is one of THE most scary characters in this novela!

Thsnk you, Vivi - awesome job, as usual.

If they really think about it, Yago, Sara, and Abel will figure out that Lucio is ultimately responsible for Selma's death. They may never know for sure that he pulled the trigger, but Katia did tell Yago that she told LUCIO where Fidel's headquarters was located and that they would all be there. Not Hernan - Lucio.

For a moment I thought that Camilo had pulled a fast one on Abel and had used blanks when he shot himself. Abel barely looked down at him before he left the room. When Sara walked in after hearing the shot I expected her to look down at the empty floor! Talk about edg-of-your-seat, nail-biting drama!

Nick

Vivi, thank you for this and all the smart, careful, beautifully constructed recaps you've written here. "Trojan Trunk" – the perfect title.

"I felt pity for Camilo as he realized he had once again been humiliated. But whenever I think about how he killed those two little boys and Ambar so callously, I don't feel any sympathy for him."

My thoughts exactly.

The more I think about this story, the bleaker it seems. (And obviously we haven't hit bottom yet. For me, one of the lowest points was when "Just Give Peace a Chance" Julia asked Abel to kill Camilo. An eye for an eye. And all the eyes haven't been counted yet.)

I continue to marvel at how emotionally tone-deaf the Yago character has been, especially in his behavior towards Ambar, Ximena, Katia, and yes, Sara.

I have no idea how it will all end, though it wouldn't surprise me if none of the original four was left standing and we are left with the next generation, represented by Matias and by the child of Julia and Abel, to pick up the pieces.

Novela Maven: Yago, Abel & Sara don't have a clue that Lucio whacked Ambar & Selma (the lovely redhead).

I did like the part where Fidel & Selma's ghosts smiled at Yago: tears shed.

Steve, you're right. The only person alive who knows that Lucio murdered Selma and was complicit in Ambar's death is Lucio himself. I have no doubt that he will end up spitting out his vile secrets just to hurt Omar and Sara before he (inevitably) dies.

This episode was complicated, and I was very tired when I watched it last night. I missed a LOT of stuff, like the fact that the civil ceremony was done BEFORE they said their vows. I didn't realize they were already married! Thank you for sorting it out with your usual humor, Vivi.

I had the same impression of Sara's wedding dress - she could have picked a better one! Evidently she wanted to save as much of her inheritance as possible.

The plot against Camilo was so intricate - and yet it still would have failed if Camilo hadn't shot himself. Very frustrating.

I did feel a moment of pity for Camilo. The guy has no luck with weddings. But he doesn't deserve any luck. His victims never had any luck.

Oh. My. Dios! What an episode! I just finished watching a few minutes ago and your recap captured the emotional rollercoaster so beautifully, so vividly! Thank you for this wonderful recap, Vivi! Also, many thanks to CountxAlacran for his excellent retelling of the events from Monday's episode.

Julie, it seems that the finale will be split into two episodes: Monday and Tuesday of next week. I'll do Monday and, if Vivi is available next week, she can do Tuesday. Otherwise, please fire me an email and we can work out an alternative plan.

I can't believe there are only 4 hours left of Yago time! After all the grief Loonyvision has given us, this series is coming to an end! ¡No puede ser! ¡No puede ser! :(

Thanks again, Vivi! This was stellar! :)

Nandicta- I'll happily take the second half of the finale next Tuesday. Can't believe we have such little time left with this tale.

Julie- Sara never looked enthusiastic during either of her wedding dress shopping montages. The one the wedding planner had her in was gorgeous and looked amazing on her. But the more I think about this simple dress, the more I think it was a good choice. Not only because it reflects how she really felt about Camilo, but also because it was practical. Things could have gotten very complicated and violent, and a girl needs to be able to run fast to get the heck out of Dodge! That dress was perfect for a quick escape.

Yes, the signatures were put on the marriage certificate. Sara is officially a (rich) widow.

I didn't get a look at Sara's feet. I wonder if she was wearing Nikes. (White ones, of course!)

Ha. Julie, I'm not sure if this link will work for you --

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/21/fashion/weddings/brides-sneakers-weddings.html?_r=0

-- but it's a NYT piece called "Sneakers for That Sprint Down the Aisle." Who knows? Maybe Sara read it.

One thing that doesn't quite ring true for me: Camilo's placing his trust in Lucio (though of course, most every other henchie was dead). He fatally underestimates the cuckold's rage, something he'd be expected to know a thing or two about.

Thanks Vivi for the awesome recap! It tells you something about the characters that when it looks like they are betraying each other you take it as truth. I had no qualms that Sara and Lucio were capable of betraying Yago. At one point I thought yeah, this could all be a ruse too. The fact is that these two could go either way, believably. Abel, no, and that says something of his good character.

Sara is still fighting for Omar's love. I think she should leave and move away from it all and truly start over, but I guess she can't because Matias is Omar's son. I thought it interesting when Yago told Xime he wanted to travel the world with her (previous epi). My first thought was, "you're going to leave Mati?".

NovelaMaven- I don't know if Camilo "trusted" Lucio. I think what Yago said was true about how Camilo would eventually bump Lucio off after he took care of Abel and Yago for him. Remember Chino? "Hey, shoot your buddy. Now, jump off a roof, or I'll kill your wife."

That link worked just fine, NovelaMaven.

But for Randy Fenoli, a host on the TLC show "Say Yes to The Dress," a pair of sneakers with a wedding dress is appalling. [...] "Walking in heels is so much sexier," he said. "Sneakers make you walk flat. Call me old-fashioned. I’m a traditionalist. At some point you just have to say no."

Thoughtful words from someone who would never have to wear heels himself.

Carvivlie- I think at some point Yago gave up the fight for Matias. He's said it many times that Matias adores Lucio and can only ever see Lucio as his father. It hurts him deeply that Sara and Lucio stole his son from him. I think more deeply than the framing for the robbery and murder. He does want Mati to grow up with his parents (Jonas and Melina), however, but I think he's taken himself out of the happy family picture.

Vivi,

"I don't know if Camilo "trusted" Lucio. I think what Yago said was true about how Camilo would eventually bump Lucio off after he took care of Abel and Yago for him."

Oh yeah, absolutely. What I mean is that he entrusted Lucio with his security on the occasion of his wedding.

Hey Julie, glad the link worked. Appalling? Hee hee.

Carvivlie and Vivi, I think Yago's vision of escaping with Ximena is a kind of magical thinking. 'My first thought was, "you're going to leave Mati?".' I had the same reaction.

Well they had me going! I thought for sure Sara was ready to betray Yomar once again. It's in her character, and she still shouldn't be trusted. So interested to see how they're going to wrap this one up, and hoping they don't follow the usual formula. (Sara needs to go away). (And probably Ximena too, but for her own good). I'd be ok if only Abel and Julia survive and move far away, and Matias gets to be raised by Melina and Jonas. He'd be better off with them that with any one of his parents.

Kelly

Vivi, I guess what I was thinking is, here's Yago, planning on taking out Sara and Lucio, leaving Matias without a family. So what? He's going to up and take off when the kid needs as many loving people around him as possible? Now, I guess, he plans to leave Sara free but I hope he is still planning to put Lucio in jail. Yes, he will never be the father figure he should have been but he can still be a father figure to Matias and reveal the truth at the right moment. If I had lost 12 years with my child I would want to be spending every moment with them.

He did steal as much time with Matias as possible after he found out, and they shared some nice, tender moments. But that all went to heck after Matias was told that Yago killed Ambar and that his parents broke up because of him. He's only just started to let Yago back into his circle of trust recently, but he's not as open to him as he was before. He's much more wary of him. It will take time. I really don't think Yago is thinking that far ahead though.

He's got so much on his plate I wish he wasn't trying to settle down with Xime. Stop thinking with your wanker and finish up the job you started! Now that Lucio knows he's Omar, Melina, Jonas, Bruno and Xime are possible targets. I hope he has put security around them.

Carvivlie- "Stop thinking with your wanker..." :) LOL! So true!

Wow, what an episode, and what a great recap Vivi, thank you.

There were so many plot turns that i was happy, sad, disappointed, then happy again, sad and then happy.

Every time i feel sorry for Camilo, i am reminded of the roof top episode where he had 2 of his guys killed, one shot, the other had to fall to his death. That had to be the most gruesome death scene. Then i stop feeling sorry for him.

Discussion header for #63 is up. Currently there is only a brief summary, but it ended up being a pretty simple episode.

Vivi, fabulous title and recap. Vows? (Being new at this marriage thing, Camilo is clueless.) -- lol!

“While you’re going to get the milk, I’ve already made the quesadillas!” Vivi, thanks for this dialogue. Camilo was so pleased with himself and I couldn't figure out where milk came in.

What a rollercoaster episode. I hoped Abel wasn't really dead and couldn't believe Sara would blow over Yago to stay with Camilo, even for money. But Lucio going along with the plan still surprises me.

Although he was a monster, Camilo shooting himself was sad to me. Yet a living Camilo, even from prison, would have never let Yago, Sara, or Julia rest. But I am glad Abel didn't get to kill Camilo. Abel is still too willing to do the dirty work for his teams. It would've been another stain on him and a stain on Julia too to have Camilo's murder on their hands. Camilo loved Julia. Is it possible he took his own life because he'd lost everybody -- and because he wanted Julia to stay "clean"?

NovelaMaven, great to see you here!

Niecie- "Is it possible he took his own life because he'd lost everybody -- and because he wanted Julia to stay "clean"?" Yes. Very possible. I like that thought.

Camilo was just so tickled with himself when he told that joke, it almost made me laugh. I've heard a few variations on that joke, which basically means I'm ten steps ahead of you, but this is the first time I heard the quesadilla version. I might have to incorporate it into my repertoire. :)

Niecie, thank you!

"Camilo loved Julia. Is it possible he took his own life because he'd lost everybody -- and because he wanted Julia to stay "clean"?"

Maybe. I'd like to think so, to see a glimmer of goodness, of light in the darkness...

Anyone want to guess what Julia & Abel's baby will be named after ?
