SILVANA – JUEVES – Parte 1 de 2

The first scene is with the Three Stooges. Poncho has carried Stella to her bedroom. We see, I think for the first time, that she has a LARGE photograph of herself on the wall. They are in quite the tizzy. Dominique calls the doctor. [I guess they make house calls in Miami, unlike in California.] When it seems like he won’t come, Poncho grabs the phone and says that, if the doc won’t come, he’ll lay down in front of his car the next day so the doctor can’t go anywhere. This works.

Manuel comes home to an ambush. Lucha and Vicente both rag on and on about Manuel possibly being in danger from Antonio José, the criminal. Lucha even tells her father that Chivis working at the Terminal is a mistake. He needs to stay away from her.

In Chivis’ bedroom Angie tells her mother she doesn’t plan to visit her father. Quite sensibly she lists her reasons: AJ has hurt Lupita by making her sad. He has hurt Majo by shaming her. He has caused her mother loneliness and fatigue. When Chivis tells Angie she’s not mentioned herself, Angie replies that he hurt her by disappointing her and that, despite the fraud, the ones he harmed most were those of his own family. Chivis keeps trying to convince her that you can’t divorce your parents. Somehow she’ll need to forgive him.

Majo comes in, back to her old self. She starts in blaming Chivis for not having told them she’d seen their father. Chivis tells her she didn’t have an arranged meeting with him. He appeared as a complete surprise. Majo tells her mother she lied to them. Chivis reminds her the cops were after AJ and they were coming often to the house. Angie speaks up for Viewerville: She tells Majo to stop torturing her mother. She asks if she’s forgotten that the one who screwed up over and over again was their father. She reminds Majo of the scene in the church.

Majo comes back saying that AJ told her that Chivis wanted to separate from him. She has a face like a storm cloud. She asks her mother why there was such hurry. Why did she want to make him suffer? Chivis tells her she doesn’t like the way Majo is speaking to her. Majo then asks if Chivis told her father about the neighbor.

Majo says that her papa was asking about Manuel. Chivis tells the girls that their father came to the house and saw Manuel leaving. She didn’t tell them this because she didn’t want them to be put in the position of having to lie to the police.

Majo asks her mother how she can have a clear conscience when she’s asked their father for a divorce when he can’t explain or defend himself. Angie: “Stop it! Our father is a prisoner for fraud. He’s harmed mama and the rest of us as well!” Angie then calls AJ a discarado for bringing up the topic of Manuel the first time he saw his daughter.. The girls end up yelling at each other

Majo, looking sulky, ask what she’s supposed to tell her father. Angry at last, Chivis asks if she’s going to tell AJ about the kiss with Manuel. Majo says she doesn’t want to lie. Angie pipes up: “The expert in lying is now a moralist!” After a bit more wrangling, Chivis asks the girls to trust her and they both say that they do. But Chivis does say that they have to help AJ. [Why?]

SILVANA – JUEVES – Parte 2 de 2

On the other side of the duplex, Manuel tells his children he’s the adult and will manage his intimate life himself.

Stella puts on a deathbed scene for the other two Stooges. Uno sabe cuando se aproxíma el frio abrazo de la calaca. One knows when death is approaching! She says some sweet things to them. Then she tells them not to let Chivis be happy with Manuel! She goes limp and they think she’s dead. Pretty soon, though, she snores!

Stella asks about Francisco Javier; she wants to say goodbye to him. It turns out they took the dog to the albergue (shelter). I guess they don’t euthanize purebred Yorkies that fast, because they come back with the dog. Dom says the dog is a monster, and they play some violins like those in the movie Psycho.

At the prison AJ is getting to know his cellmate. Apparently he’s reading something about horseracing. AJ tells the guy he’s done well playing the horses in the past. He also tells the guy that, if he helps him get out, he’ll make him rich.

When they bring Yorkie 2.0 to Stella’s bedside and open the crate door, the dog bites her!

Benji has come to try to convince Margarita not to give Angie that cell phone recording. When she refuses, Benji thinks that Angie will forgive him anyway. He’ll tell her he started with a plot but ended up falling for her. He muses that Angie is noble and it’s hard to find a person like that. Jorge arrives. Benji leaves. Jorge has come to apologize to Margarita about accusing her of being the school gossip. She ends up having a hissy fit saying he didn’t come to apologize, rather to speak about Angie.

The doctor has come to see Stella. After a silly tongue depressor scene, she tells him her symptoms. He asks when she had her last period. She says she’s very irregular. He gives her some prescription or note about coming in for a test.

Lupita has come to sleep with her mother. She wants to visit her father. Chivis tells her it’s not a place for children her age. But she offers to take messages back and forth.

Stella tells the guys about the doctor asking about her last period. Poncho is horrified. “You didn’t have anything to do with Esteban, did you?” Finally the penny drops for Stella. She’s horrified. They go for a drugstore pregnancy test. It seems to indicate she’s not pregnant, but Dom says that the instructions say they are not 100% guaranteed.

AJ’s capture is in the newspaper, and the Gallardos are passing it back and forth at the breakfast table. Don Benito comes to see Trini. They have another boring conversation, speaking at cross-purposes. Of course, Viewerville knows that what he has behind is back is the newspaper, not an engagement ring.

After Poncho leaves for work at the Terminal, Dom slips up and says that, if the baby were Manuel’s, it would suit Stella. He tries to walk it back, but it’s too late. Stella: “Why didn’t I think of this before?”

SILVANA

Oh no! This will throw a major spanner in the works for Mañuel & Chivis. When was the last time M had sex with Stella? I'm trying to think back... maybe the ill-fated cat and mouse game in the jungle themed no-tell motel ?? Anyone remember?

Silvana

Thanks very much, novelera, for another excellent recap. All I could think of after watching the episode was "Oh no, here we go again." Majo is back to being Majo 1.0, Trini and Don Benito have another snore-worthy lack of communication, and Stella plans to fool Manuel into thinking she's pregnant with his child. Yawn. Can't the writers come up with some fresher ideas?

I hadn't noticed the photo of Stella in her room. I'm going to have to take another look. I often miss details, especially when I'm watching the Three Stooges, because I'm so focused on trying to catch whatever nonsense they're spouting (and most times I fail).

Jude Gray raises a question I too had. When was the last time Stella and Manuel had sex? It seems like too long ago for her to be recently pregnant. And he seems too savvy not to realize this.

Juanita:

Silvana: I'm wondering about the same thing regarding Stella being preggers so quickly!

Silvana

Steve, the timing makes some sense as the result of Stella's brief fling with Steve. However, for her to claim that Manuel is the father, he'd have to have had sex with her more recently than I think is the case.

Silvana. Excellent recap, novelera! "Angie speaks for Viewerville." Indeed. And yes indeed, why should Chivis and the girls help AJ, the disgusting criminal. Majo is such an idiot! And Angie is SO right about AJ. Maybe the shelter where Francisco Javier 2.0 was staying is a no-kill shelter, like TAILS? About Stella, Manuel, Esteban and the pregnancy: Thank goodness for DNA! I too was very surprised by the doctor's house call. Don't they have emergency rooms in Miami?

Silvana. And the drugstore pregnancy test's coming up negative may be because the pregnancy, with Steve, is so recent--though I thought the most recent type of test could catch a pregnancy pretty early.

Silvana

Jude and Juanita, Nothing happened at the no-tell motel. They were about to happen when Manuel called Stella by Chivis' name! The only other time I remember was very early on when he came to see her and, I think, slung her over his shoulder and carried her upstairs. Of course, we knew they were sexually active, but that was the only "event" I remember. When she stayed in his house, he made the excuse of the children to avoid her, although she tried to convince Chivis that they were having sex.

I'd like to think Manuel wouldn't be fooled, but the passing of time is so vague and unclear in telenovelas that I can't tell if a month or six months have passed since the beginning of the show.

SILVANA:

Thank you for the fantastic recap, novelera!

I slapped my hand on my head when Dom gave Stella the "brilliant" idea to fake that the baby is Manuel's. Oy! Not THIS stupid device! Let's hope this plan fails as miserably as all her others.

I just don't understand why adult Majo can't understand why her poor mother wouldn't want to stay married to a criminal who deceived her and left her high and dry (and holding the bag). What the heck is so hard to understand?! I wanted to slap her last night. She and AJ should be grateful that Chivis is even willing to help him. She owes him NOTHING.

Silvana. Absolutely right on, Vivi!

Silvana

wonderful recap novelera!
any chance Stella has rabies?

Novelera, that was totally a delight to read. Thanks. Someone needs to slap some sense into Majo. I can't stand her attitude toward her mother. May the telenovela gods dish out some karma on her rear end.

Silvana sin Lana – Friday, October 14 – Capítulo 61, part 1/2

Stella gets excited about the Manuel/baby plan. Dom points out that Manuel’s not going to believe it’s his since he and Stella haven’t been together in a while. Stella thinks she can seduce him that very day and get him to sleep with her. Or she can just pretend that she got pregnant the last time they did it, and by the time he asks for a DNA test, he’ll already be in love with her again and eating out of the palm of her hand.

Trini visits AJ in jail to complain about the newspaper article. AJ remains smug, saying people will forget all about it soon. Trini is annoyed that he doesn’t realize he’s hurting his family. He changes the subject to taking her to a casino and the racetrack when he gets out of jail, and she can invite Don Benito too. Trini wants to know what exactly is going on/what his plan is.

Cata barges into Manuel’s office. He is busy with fighting the rent hike and tells Cata it is not a good time. She flirts like always and reveals that she knows Ezequiel Sotomayor and that he owes her husband many favors. She offers her help in the case and blatantly says she can give him many other things too.

AJ claims that he just got unlucky with the bad economy and some of his clients playing dirty. Trini doesn’t believe him. She insults his appearance in the photo and points out that he left his family to fend for themselves. AJ complains that he’s all alone without his family and his wife wants to leave him. He fishes for info about Manuel – but Chivis hasn’t been all alone, has she?

Manuel finally manages to kick Cata out after she keeps insisting that he let her help him with Ezequiel.

Trini knows exactly what AJ is getting at. She reminds him that Chivis has only ever lied to protect him, so don’t question her character. If he wants Trini’s support and for Chivis to not divorce him, then he needs to stop complicating things. He is the bad guy in all of this, not Chivis. AJ whines that it’s just normal insecurities that any man away from his wife would have. He’s always been a bit jealous. Trini tells him to get a clue and leaves.

On their way out, Stella asks where Francisco Javier is. Dom says he locked him in Poncho’s room as punishment for biting her. He also wants to take him to a shelter... and leave him there. Stella thinks it’s a good idea to take him to a dog therapist, but she won’t give up on her Javito. She’s going to teach him to be a good son. As they leave, she also says they should buy her wedding dress after she finally sees the doctor about whether she’s pregnant.

At school, two annoying girls start harassing Angie about her father. She doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Jorge comes to her rescue and steals the newspaper from one of the girls. He tells Angie there’s a front page article about her dad and his cons. She starts crying looking at the photo. She doesn’t want anyone to make fun of Lupita because of it. Jorge reminds her that Pedrito will defend Lupita. He takes her hand and offers to make sure she won’t be alone, so no one can hurt her either. Margarita watches from a distance.

Manuel talks to Ezequiel on the phone and threatens to sue. The Three Stooges and Vicente are also in his office. Poncho continues with his campaign slogans; Vicente makes fun of him. Stella mentions feeling nauseated and Dom covers for her.

Trini goes to the bakery after leaving the jail. She seems annoyed that Don Benito is watching TV in Spanish (Caso Cerrado) instead of English, but then sits down to watch it while Don Benito runs off to get her a coffee.

Silvana sin Lana – Friday, October 14 – Capítulo 61, part 2/2

Majo is actually cleaning the bathroom when Andrés calls. He asks how it went visiting her father in jail, and he wants to go with her next time. (He feels left out of her problems). After her conversation with Andrés, Vicente sends her a message saying he misses her a lot. He asks for a photo of her – just to see her; not to get his hopes up. She starts taking pictures but deletes them all. Vicente messages back that he doesn’t care if she hasn’t arreglado (gotten ready; i.e. done her hair/makeup) because she is beautiful regardless. She responds that she is just sad and she doesn’t want him to see her sad.

David Rodríguez from the Miami Telemundo station has arrived at the terminal, to report on the rent situation. Dom makes fun of Vicente for being on his phone. He puts it away and tells Poncho to make a speech now that everyone is gathered nearby. Poncho tries and fails miserably, even with the megaphone, since no one pays attention to him. Even Stella ignores him and continues taking selfies. As soon as Manuel addresses the crowd, they all applaud and cheer, which annoys Poncho even more. Don Ezequiel arrives but refuses to be interviewed and just keeps saying talk to my lawyers.

Chivis arrives at the terminal and David practically ambushes her during the live broadcast. At the bakery, Trini keeps watching TV as it transitions to local news and chokes on her bread when she sees Chivis. Trini complains about AJ being in the tabloids and now Chivis on TV defending the fishmongers, then she faints. Don Benito yells at Juanito to get some whisky.

Margarita emails the voicemail from Benji to Angie. Angie and Benji are studying math in her room. The doorbell rings and Angie asks Majo to get it. It’s Andrés. His present for Majo is that he got the marriage license. Now they have the date set and they will get married in a month. Majo pretends to be happy.

Angie tells Benji about Margarita’s email with the audio attachment. He convinces her not to open it, and erase it, since Margarita is probably just trying to bother her and Angie shouldn’t pay any attention to her anymore.

Majo literally backs away from Andrés, telling him one month is really fast. Things have changed and her father asked her to wait until he gets out of jail for her to get married. Andrés is angry.

Vicente looks confused, trying to study calculus at the university. A girl comes over (Amalia from Marido en Alquiler) and flirts with him. She thought he looked sad because of a girl. Vicente admits there was one, but lo que no fue en tu año, no es tu daño (literally: what wasn’t in your year, is not your damage/pain – it’s ancient history / it’s water under the bridge / it’s not a problem anymore).

Chivis reluctantly meets with Rafael since he has news. More people have brought lawsuits against AJ and the fianza (bail) has been increased. Sleazy Rafael says he can loan Chivis the money and they can come to an agreement, as he puts his hand on her leg. She slaps him hard. He threatens to stop representing AJ. She doesn’t care because she wants AJ to know what kind of basura (trash) he has for a friend and lawyer. Rafael then threatens to tell AJ about Manuel. Chivis calls him asco (despicable, awful) and leaves. His great comeback is that he is also imprescindible (indispensable, essential).

J,
I enjoyed your recap. Thank you. What a sleazebag Rafael is. He and AJ deserve each other. I hope Angie does not erase margaritas email. I am so ready for her to discover Benji's deception. Majo and Andres? Whatever. I hope Manuel does not fall for Cata's or Stella's plan.
Helen

Silvana. Excellent recap, J.! Stella's plan is totally delusional, of course. Either she has sex with Manuel now and then has a "premature" 7-8 lb. baby, or she doesn't and has a way overdue (like 10-11 month gestation period) 7-8 lb. baby. Not to mention the dna problem--much better to seek out Steve, who, besides, has both the legal and moral right to know he's about to be a father. I love how Manuel is standing up to Ezequial. What a coincidence that Trini just happens to be watching tv when Chivis comes on. Ah, Telenovela-land! My goodness! Vicente is studying calculus after having been out of school for several years and without a math review course? Maybe he needs Benji!

Silvana

Thanks so much, J, for another wonderful recap. You helped me understand some passages I missed, and I'm also very grateful that you included and translated the saying Vicente quoted to the girl. It went right by me.

I think the high point of the episode for me was when Chivis slapped Rafael hard. That slimeball deserves much worse. It was also good that she claimed she doesn't care whether Rafael stops representing AJ. The less hold he has over Chivis the better.

Trini too had one of her better moments in this episode, in her discussion with AJ. For me, it more than offset her stupidity over seeing Chivis on TV.

And it looks as if Majo may not be able to take Vicente for granted. Heh heh. It would serve her right if she lost both Andrés and Vicente.

SILVANA:

Thanks so much, J! I just watched the episode. There was too much Trini for my taste, but I'm glad she stuck up for Chivis to AJ.

MJ sure likes to jump on Chivis' case about "lying", but lies roll off her tongue so easily. I seem to remember that it was SHE who told AJ she didn't want to get married without him walking her down the aisle, not the other way around.

**jumping on my soapbox**
I found it interesting that in a city full of fresh fish lovers from the Caribbean, we never see any black people milling about among the customers in the the fish market. Yet, the casting folks felt the need to inject "realism" by having that big black tattooed guy in the foreground of the jail scene (even having Trini scurry around him on her way out). Messages are sent not just by lack of representation, but also by when producers choose to show that representation.

SILVANA

I noticed that too, Vivi... infuriating!

Silvana

J, another fine recap! Thanks so much, and especially for translating what Vicente said to the "new girl". I got the gist, but I love the translations of idioms, always.

Vivi, I also found it offensive that they chose to have a sinister-looking convict be a black man. In light of the current national outrage over police shootings of black men, that scene was particularly insensitive by Telemundo.

I got the impression that those ghastly girls harassing Angie were sent over by Margarita. It's completely ridiculous that that charter school had an official trying to expel Angie and Lupita for something their father did and over which they had no control. But incidents of bullying of students is NOT addressed at all.

It surely does seem that Angie will find out about Benji sometime, but it was quite clever of him to ask Angie to block her as an email sender. Margarita has already verbally tried to out him to Angie, and it didn't work. So, Margarita won't be able to send it again. Of course, she can walk up to Angie and play it on her phone, provided Angie stands there and listens.

Stella, gah! She should be voted Miss Delusional of 2016. It was patently ridiculous when she said she'd have Manuel eating out of her hand to the extent that he either would not ask for a DNA test or wouldn't mind that the bun in the oven wasn't his after its birth.

I wish they'd lay off the ridiculous scenes of Poncho trying to appear a better match for Stella by trying to downgrade Manuel. This makes him a not very appealing person and, at least for me, takes away sympathy for his pining away for Stella.

I loved seeing Andrés finally lose his temper with Majo. The guy has been such a doormat for so long.

Trini surprised me in her scene with AJ. I fully expected her to fawn over him and volunteer to help him get Chivis back.

Silvana

Vivi, I too am glad you brought up the very unfortunate way Telemundo presented the scene in the jail. Not only did Trini show obvious discomfort at having to pass by the black prisoner, but whereas the two white prisoners wore both parts of their orange prison uniforms, for some reason the black prisoner did not. Instead of the orange prison shirt, he wore just an undershirt that showed off his enormous tattooed arms. Talk about unspoken messages! And you made an especially perceptive point in linking the portrayal of the black prisoner and the absence of black shoppers or workers at the fish terminal.

Silvana. The portrayal of the African-American prisoner was particularly upsetting given the unfair stereotypes to which Hispanics are sometimes subjected. You'd think Telemundo, of all places, would be more sensitive.

SILVANA:

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that or was upset by it. Juanita- I didn't even notice the thing with the uniform, I was fuming so much. In addition to never seeing any black people working or shopping at the terminal, we never see any at the charter school, at the university, or in the bakery. In this universe, they only appear in jails.

Silvana. Not to mention, there are Spanish-speaking African Americans, particularly people from the Caribbean: Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, some of the northeastern countries of South America, among other places--so it's not as if they couldn't find actors.

Silvana. It's also important to note that Spanish-speaking countries aren't cultural monoliths any more than we are.

SILVANA:

SpanProf- You would think Telemundo, based in multicultural Miami, would know that. But it's not reflected in its telenovelas.

Silvana. Vivi: Yes, indeed!

SILVANA

J and novelera

Thank you for the recaps last week! And the translations!!!
This is the first chance I've had to post, after I got caught up on episodes yesterday.

So Telemundo did not show us Stella & Steve doing the horizontal tango, which makes me wonder if scenes are being cut, since we never saw the kiss Angie gave AJ but everyone on the show mentioned it. Whatever. Telenovela beanie hat is firmly in place.

Someone on the show referenced Chivis being in her current situation "a few months", so I have no doubt that Stella's baby is not Manuel's. Hopefully Manuel can count, too.

I agree with comments about the race issue in the jail and fish market scenes. Wake up, Telemundo! Sheesh!
