Vino el Amor #26, December 6, 2016: Vino el Pink Slip and a Lot of Hollering
First, thank you to Anita for filling in for me on last Tuesday's show! This one may be a bit shorter than normal; still catching up on life post-vacation.
Repeated scenes:
- Luciana fills in Marta and wants to know what Marta and Liliana were fighting about before Marta's collapse. Marta says she will tell her.
- Perla gets a call from Carito, who tells her Juan was fired and she could be next
- Bobby is afraid Marta will die. Fer tries to reassure him. Sonia brings them food and tries to kiss up to them. Gracie comes in and tries to reassure the kids. Bobby doesn't understand why his grandmother hates Marta so much and says that each day he hates his grandmother more.
- Luciana blows a gasket when Marta tells her a very watered-down version of the conversation with Liliana. (Basically, Marta tells her that Liliana thinks Marta was after her husband.) Luciana clearly doesn't believe that Marta could do such a thing and wants to go after Liliana. Marta is able to calm Luciana down by playing it all as something that happened years ago. Luciana says the most important thing is that Marta gets better. Marta says it's most important to her that Luciana will stay.
- Juan tells Perla that his evil plan, er, their future, is in jeopardy. He just needs to think up a new evil plan to get revenge and the business for himself. Perla says she will help him with the new evil plan. They start to make out. Ew.
- Carito brings food to Leon (who is recovering in his bedroom) and apologizes for the mean things she said the other day about him. She has had a good time with him and asks his forgiveness. Leon says that she should've picked him because Miguel will just break her heart. He turns over in the bed and she leaves.
- Gracie and Lil have one of their conversations where they shade each other while asking for each other's help. FF>. Juan calls Gracie, who calls him stupid for hiding in San Francisco and getting fired for the pesticide. Lil grabs the phone and piles on also calling him an imbecile. After he hangs up, Gracie taunts Lil that she is the only one who can help Lil now.
- It's the next day and Carito is caring for Ramon and Leon. Leon has gotten up and wants to see his mom.
- Luciana apparently got a job with another vineyard while I was on vacation, which she is now resigning from to return to the Vineyard of Love. Her new boss, Adolfo, questions why she wants to return to a place where she wasn't treated properly and tells her she might regret losing this opportunity (to work at a non-dysfunctional workplace?). Luciana says she must go where her heart and her people are. Whatever Luciana.
- Gracie has made eggs for breakfast. David is down. Lil will just have coffee. Gracie asks how Marta is doing and says she would have liked to go with David to visit her. David says Marta is better.
- Luciana stomps into the kitchen and Gracie "apologizes" to her for something that went down in the restaurant while I was on vacation. She says that Marta and Luci are like family to them. Luci is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I need to talk to David. Gracie tries to prevent this, but David hears her and wants to hear what she has to say.
- Fer visits the employee house and tells Tano that all she wants for her birthday is a smooch from him. It would be her first kiss. She persists and persists, trying to steal one:
- Getting away from her causes poor Tano to do a backwards somersault over the furniture:
- Tano begs her forgiveness but he is with Susan and besides, he told her dad that he respects her! Fer is miffed. She asks if he doesn't like her. He says that she's pretty and any guy would like her. She doesn't want "any guy," she wants him. He reminds her about Susan and Dad again. She's miffed and hobbles off.
- Back in the mansion, Luciana tells David that the problem she had was Liliana bothering Marta. Now that she's back, she wants David to make good on his promise that Liliana won't bother Marta again. David tries to make nice and tell her that in his house, they love Marta and she won't need protection. Luciana corrects him and says that her mom was miserable due to Liliana's treatment. Liliana says that David will need to choose between Marta and Lil.
- The argument continues. Liliana says that Luci is trying to make her look bad in front of her grandchildren. Luciana asks how she would do that. Liliana then tells David that Luci is wrong and she would never say anything mean about Marta. David gives his word that no one in the house will hurt Marta. Luciana is like "riiiiiight" and says that Liliana has been making life difficult since she was a child. Gracie says she agrees with... wait for it...Luciana!
- We're all shocked, especially Lil, but Gracie goes on to say that her mom has a strong character and can be hurtful, but she's lived a hard life. Luciana doubts it, but Gracie says there were money troubles when they were young, and of course, when they lost Lisa. Luci wisely points out that this is no reason for Lil to be mean to Marta. Gracie agrees and says that her mom will change! David asks Lil if this will happen. Liliana is left with no choice but to agree to behave. Luciana apologizes for pressing the issue and Gracie says that they all understand she is upset about her mother and reassures her everything will be alright. After Luci leaves, Gracie asks David if that was the best way to handle things. David says yes, but if things don't change, adjustments will be made. He is staring at Lil as he says this.
- Miguel is happy to see Luciana. She tells him that she stood up for her mom being treated better and David agreed. Miguel is glad for her but doubtful Liliana can change as she's always been awful. Luciana tells him she's off to visit her mom at the hospital; he asks if she needs a ride back that night. He tells her she'll never be alone and clearly wants a big kiss. Luciana gives him a peck and thanks him for being there for her.
- Liliana expresses to Gracie that she was surprised at what Gracie said to defend her. Gracie makes sure she knows that she did that for her own selfish reasons. Liliana says, ah to get in with David, and notes that David still favors Luciana. Gracie says not for long, and by the way, Liliana, you owe me! Because David was going to move you out of the house. So Liliana better start thinking of how she'll repay Gracie.
- David looks for Fer in her bedroom (I guess she was grounded while I was on vacation) and she's not there. He starts hollering like a banshee for her.
- Meanwhile, Fer has been crying outside employee headquarters, where Luciana finds her. Luciana offers to take Fer back to the house.
- David is hollering and hollering for Fer. Gracie tries to calm him down as if he's too strict, it will only make Fer rebel more.
- We see Juan and Perla leave the hotel.
- Susan is up and about but still looks very ill. She joins Tano in the employee kitchen and he stupidly tells her what Fer asked. Susan flips out. As my notes put it, they have a dumb fight and then they decide to relax and watch TV. FF>>
- Luci asks Fer what she was doing at employee housing. Fer says she wanted to visit the sick workers, especially Tano who had checked on her when she hurt herself. Luci calls that out and Fer confesses she likes Tano, but don't tell David about that! Luci says she won't tell him, but this can't work, Tano is an employee and she's the boss' daughter. Fer points out that Luci is in the same boat with her thing with David. Luci says she never wanted anything (romantic) with David.
- Hollering David is hollering outside for Fer. Sonia and Gracie are trying to get him to stop. Fer and Luci come up to the mansion and the hollering is directed directly to Fer. Luci tries to get him to stop, but David tells her to buzz off, this is between him and his daughter. Luci says she was just helping Fer with the stairs and being so mean won't help Fer learn anything. Then she stomps out as Luci always does.
- Leon wants to visit Marta but he's too weak. He doesn't buy that Carito is so worried, but she assures him she is. He says he feels bad for her because she can't have the man she really wants (Miguel) and walks off sadly.
- The phone rings and Carito answers. It's Gutierrez calling for Marta. Carito tells him that she's sick and in the hospital.
- Back to the teenage dramalama! David is still hollering! Gracie tries to smooth it all over by telling David that Fer just forgot to ask Gracie's permission, but David tells her to buzz off too (Sonia as well). David then hollers that Fer is disrespectful with this behavior and GO TO YOUR ROOM. Fer hobbles off but drops her phone (which I gather she was also grounded from during my vacation). David blows yet another gasket and yells at her about the phone. Sonia steps up and covers for her, telling David that it's her phone. David asks her why she lent the phone and Sonia lies that she felt sad for Fer and was only trying to help. David tells her they'll talk later. Sonia goes (taking the phone from David) and David finally speaks gently to Fer, basically telling her he's only trying to do a good job of parenting and she's making it hard. Fer says that she's just worried about Marta and wanted to see her. She'd like to visit her in the hospital.
- Marta is asleep, and Gutierrez comes in the hospital room with a pretty bouquet of flowers. She awakens and he asks her for another chance. She says no way, I know Liliana asked you to dump me and you deported my daughter! She's done with him! He begs for forgiveness. Marta caves pretty quickly and they make a date to date when she gets out. He promises to be a better man for her. They actually seem kind of into each other. He leaves to go get a vase for the flowers.
- Luciana just misses him as she enters Marta's room. She comments on the flowers and Marta says her friend left them and is getting a vase. She'll introduce him to Luci when he returns. Luci says that she's not ready to meet a new man in Marta's life just yet (as Gutierrez eavesdrops on this part).
- Juan arrives to visit David at the mansion. He is carrying files which he needs to return to David. Then he tries to guilt-trip David for firing him by playing the friendship card. Juan would never have handled this situation by firing David! David replies that endangering the health of all the employees is not good. Juan counters that he knows pesticides are bad, but hey, I dropped off the files...
- Marta tells Luci she will be around for years to come and not to worry. The nurse brings in a vase with water for the flowers. Luciana asks Marta what her friend's name is and Marta just tells her, "Bryan." Luci looks forward to meeting Bryan some day. That ought to go well!
- Juan overplays his cards and David gets re-irked and starts hollering about pesticides being bad for his employees. Juan says that he cares about the employees too. David continues hollering about chemicals and FDA approval processes. Juan says, um I'm a lawyer not a chemist, I had things to learn on the fly! Then he plays the guilt card, asserting he helped David by stepping in with the company's affairs after Lisa died.
- Gracie, Liliana and Fernanda run into Gutierrez in the hospital hallway. It's obvious that there's an issue between Liliana and Gutierrez and Gracie takes note, and leads Fer away after introductions are made. Liliana gets mad at Gutierrez for visiting Marta.
- Juan asks for another chance with the company, as David is like his family! David is like NOPE YOU'RE STILL FIRED. Juan keeps pleading his case. David is firm on his NOPE and feeds Juan a line about how protecting their friendship while thanking him for his work.
- Liliana threatens Gutierrez that she will tell Marta that he deported Luciana. Gutierrez threatens Lil with telling David about her role in that. She challenges him to do it!
- Juan keeps pleading his case to David and offers to apologize to the workers and pay for the drugs they will receive to cure them. David points out that he could be sued for all this by the workers. There is nothing more Juan can do and David thinks he should just own up to his responsibility for the pesticides.
- Luciana tells Marta about her talk with David and family. Marta says she shouldn't have done that. Luciana says that Gracie mentioned something that made Luciana realize she may have misjudged Liliana. On cue, Family walks in. Marta happily greets Fer and Gracie tells Luciana that she's sorry for her remarks the other day and it is clear that Marta is part of the family. Gracie would like to get know Marta better. Just call her Grace! Oh and by the way, Liliana ran into your friend the cop. Marta makes a face.
- David asks Juan for some management details and says he is sorry. Juan says he is sorry too. David seems genuinely sad.
- Luci comments that it's strange that Marta and Liliana have a friend in common! Marta tries to play it off, but Gracie keeps commenting. Liliana adds that she knew him back in the day before Marcos left. Fer asks more questions about it, but Liliana doesn't say anymore and excuses herself.
- Juan is madder than a hornet. He tells Perla he's fired. Perla freaks out (see top screencap). Juan starts hollering himself!
- Juan hollers that this place (the business) is MINE and I WON'T LOSE IT.

"Juan tells Perla that his evil plan, er, their future"
Stunned I tell ya, Juan's pleas fall on deaf ears
Best part, when David grabbed Sonia's forearm, while discussing the phone, then dropped it and she grabbed his hand and tried to put it back.
I'm a bit sympathetic to Lilian, seems those two have a history of fighting over men.
I laughed when Luciana said Marta would never cheat on Marcos.
Luciana knows she wields power over David with her continued threats to leave and I cannot wait for the day he shows her the door and locks it.
I find myself weirdly liking Gracie the best. I just don't see why she wants to saddle herself with Grumpy Hollering David.
As for the couples, since Team Miguel is losing, I think I am starting to root for Fer to get herself some Tano. Susan and Tano aren't working for me.
One thing to keep in mind here is that our villana's name is Lillian, and her calling her daughter Grace rather than Graciela means something. Both of them seem to be gringa wanna-bes. I wonder how much this affects the series' ratings.
Luciana will blow her top when she finally sees "Bryan", so they will probably do the close-call cliche for a while.
Luciana should not have defended FerBrat the way she did. Planting the earrings to frame her for the theft is deadly serious considering their value. Her motive may be childish but FerBrat is more than old enough to understand the consequences. The mistake David is making here is failing to set terms for the grounding to be lifted, whether it is a written apology to Luciana, doing chores in the house (which she appears not to have) or a specific length of time.
BTW, I think Rebeca was wearing those earrings in ECDLP last night.
Cynthia, ITA all you said about Perla yesterday. She is a battered "wife" trying to keep Juan placated. After moving up in the world -- from boinking only in the office to a trip to San Francisco, nice suite, and gifts -- I see why she's slow to take off the blinders about him.
I get the feeling that Lillian and Marta might be related, or maybe used to be friends before the Fernando rivalry. Either way, Luciana is most definitely related to her patrón's in-laws. If Luciana is a half-sister to Lisa and Graciela, that means all three sisters fell for the same man.
Luciana annoyed me jumping in when David was yelling at his daughter. It was not her place to interfere. David was much calmer when he (finally) got a chance to speak alone to his daughter.
One thing. Marta still doesn't know that Gutierrez had her daughter and husband deported. She knows only that he ordered his men to arrest Luciana for the theft of the earrings because of Lillian. Marta sure went gaga-goo-goo over Gut (and she didn't even see him doing the shirtless workout).
Truth? I stared at the first screen shot for a full minute, trying to figure out who it was. Perla was not at her most fabulous, was she?? :)
"Gracie and Lil have one of their conversations where they shade each other while asking for each other's help" was my favorite line of many.
Niecie, thank you for clearing up that Marta doesn't know yet that Gutierrez had her family deported. I was confused on that point.
I'm just puzzled about the entire Gutierrez and Marta situation. Gutierrez seems to possess some intelligence. How was he planning to woo Marta and avoid Luci indefinitely? Worse, had he not even thought that far ahead?? I mean he shows up at the hospital, bouquet in hand. Didn't he think that he would be bound to run into Luci there? The fact that he made himself scarce quickly seems to indicate he realizes Luci will not be forgiving. And Urban, truth? Above and beyond all this, I have a sinking feeling that even when she finds out, Marta will not only forgive Gutierrez, but end up forging ahead with their relationship. She tolerated Carito and Perla's verbal abuse of her daughter far too long and has clearly indicated Fernanda has a special place in her heart (seemingly right next to Luci). I put nothing past her. If I were Luci, I might be able to forgive much, but her mother's romantic involvement with the man that separated them? Never.
"Susan is up and about but still looks very ill. She joins Tano in the employee kitchen and he stupidly tells her what Fer asked. Susan flips out". These two clearly do not belong together. At all. Tano is much better suited to Fernanda and Susan and Miguel belong together.
dy, this was fantastic. Thank you.

I haven't been watching (but instead reading the recaps), so I too was confused if Marta knew Gut had deported Luci and Marcos. Thanks for clearing that up everyone.
Seems that folks think that Marta is downright heartless. I'm going to go to bat for her and say that, despite her flaws and mistakes, Marta will NOT be forgiving when she learns that Gut not only deported her husband and child, but did so on Lil's orders, AND manhandled her underage daughter in the process.
There are very positive things in her character but do think there is much still to be revealed. I stand by my assertion though that she has not defended or supported her daughter nearly enough, especially as she forgave Fernanda far too quickly. While Luci did as well, it was she who was portrayed as a thief and liar. It was up to her, not her mother to forgive.
I can see her forgiving Gut but I don't ever see Luci ever doing so (nor should she). So much emphasis is being placed on Marta and Gut, I would be surprised if the storyline was abruptly dropped. The writers had that opportunity when he "broke up" with Marta. That didn't last too long, did it? :)

I am wondering what Jua...ONE is talking about keeping HIS vineyard?
Hoo boy! Well, who needs high drama and nail-ripping cliff hangers at 9 o'clock at night? If you do, you're not going to get them here! That's all right. Yep. Marta had a heart to heart with Luci about why Lillian hates her and I thought she wouldn't, but Marta DID do the shifty-eyed thing behind Luci's back as she hugged her. Sure sign of lying like a dog!
Oh, and it WAS Sonia's phone. She wasn't lying about it. While you were gone, David took away all of Fer's electronic apparatuses (or is it apparati?). Sonia loaned her hers. The first thing Fer did when she left was check the contacts and got Tano's phone no. IIRC, she called him and that's why he came to visit her in her room, which started the whole grounding thing when David caught him in the room.
And yes, Marta was referring to Guti sending his men to arrest Luci for the earring theft (which had just been cleared up). He swears he didn't know it was her daughter.
Yes, Marta has a lot of secrets yet to be revealed, but I do not call her heartless either.
I vote that Marta is not heartless. But she's no goody two-shoes either.
Not the sweet lamb you appear to be. Moma
Was a rollin stone. And still tumblin, with those big brown lyin eyes, that should be a song. I still don't like nasty evil lil. Her hubby may have side stepped, but she ain't not innocent either.
Ok the lyin continues.......
Oh I thought it was so funny when Gracie said she agreed with Luciana, then glanced at Lil and winked so all of us in TN land knew she was fibbing.
DY, the story with Tano and Susan isn't working for me either. Susan must be how old, maybe 29 or 30? And if Tano is around 18, that is too much of an age difference. If were that age, I could not ever go for someone who was that much younger. I happen to be married to a younger man, he is younger by 7 years. I was 39 and he was 32 when we were married and we have been married nearly 20 years. If I had met him when he was 18 and I was 25, there is no way I would have been interested in him. When you get into your 30s it's a lot different. I do remember being 16 years old and a 14 year old had a crush on me and I just wasn't interested in him at all. He was cute, but that's as far as I thought about him, he was a baby in my eyes.
