Vino el Amor, Lunes 01/9/17 Chapter 49: Departures and Disasters

Luciana told David it wasn't necessary to do anything about her visa. Juan claimed to have done everything he could. David said he had told him more than twenty times it had to be prioritized. He wanted to talk to the lawyer who specialized in these cases. Juan gloated behind his back.
Miguel wanted to go to Mexico with Luciana despite León telling him it wasn't necessary. He went on about Luciana being the love of his life. [This young man is riding for a fall; alas.]

David said he would talk to the cop who was a family friend (Brian) and Luciana told him her mother had already spoken to him. He insisted upon speaking to him himself, saying “Although we're not together, I'm always on your side.” [David, you need to move ahead with this lest the flies on the wall get bored out of their minds and take wing.]

Tano and León were clearly on Miguel's side on this, saying they'd help in whatever way they could.

Outside on the grass near the vineyard fences, Bobby told Marta how much he will miss Luciana. He asked about whether Luciana and Miguel would be getting married and Marta started talking about how they had known each other forever, since they were kids. He was afraid they would move far away. Marta told him that nothing like this would happen until Luciana resolved her residency permit. Bobby talked about wanting his father to help, but Marta was sure Luciana would have to go to Mexico first.

César arrived and was happy to see Gracie. However, she let him down by letting him know that she intended to stay at David's and help with the kids so their relationship could not continue. He looked disappointed. [César, you are dodging a cannonball and don't realize it.] He asked her why she came to this conclusion and her answer was that the trip made her see what her priorities should be. [Yeah, coming on to a cuñado who has yet to learn you are a succubus.] César said he would respect her decision although he was sure there was more to it.

Miguel tried calling Luciana but she arrived at the employees' quarters just as her cell started ringing. He stopped the call just as he saw her and told her he would go to Mexico with her. She looked happy [possibly for Miguel's benefit] and simultaneously a little ill at ease [which he would likely not notice].

César told Gracie he wanted an honest relationship and therefore wanted the truth. She told him that she became closer to David's children on the trip and implied she became closer to David himself. She said in words that they were strictly business and totally focused on promoting the new wine.

Luciana told Miguel that their boss was back and asked her to wait in case he could do something so she wouldn't have to return. He was going to make Juan expedite the situation while he talked to someone else. Miguel hoped that this would work.

David went to Brian's office and told him he needed to help them. He didn't want Luciana to end up separated from her family again. Brian advised him to write letters of recommendation for Luciana saying that she was necessary to his business and that he couldn't replace her. He also offered to make a call to insure that she would get an appointment immediately. He advised David to remain calm. It was obvious that David would not be until the matter was resolved.

Lillian met Juan for lunch (or whatever) and he told her about the visit from the detectives about the ruined wine. He was obviously nervous about their intention to interview all the vineyard workers. He tried to tell her there was no proof, but as he did so he remembered that Perla saw the purchase receipt for the acid. Lillian told him that there had better not be and – interestingly – refused to help him when he told her she had to. She was not willing to cover up his stupidities.

David saw Luciana and Miguel kissing in the vineyard and was clearly vexed. He told Luciana that there was nothing that the Lieutenant could do but that he would write a letter of recommendation for her. Luciana had resigned herself to go to Mexico and said so. Miguel then told David that he would go with Luciana as he put his arm around her in a very clear gesture saying that she was his.

Juan reminded Lillian that they were working together but she told him not to threaten her; he had nothing to say about this. It also sounded like she wouldn't help him if Gutiérrez discovered he was guilty. Juan told her that Gutiérrez was helping Lucia in order to please Marta. This made Lillian leave with nothing but a dirty look.

David told Miguel that this was the worst possible time for him to leave because there was too much to do in the vineyard. Miguel argued that Luciana had never been in DF, that he had things under control, and that León and Ramón could handle things. He was sure things would run appropriately. David didn't seem to agree as he told Luciana to do whatever she wanted. She told David that she was glad Miguel made the offer but she wouldn't be selfish. After David left Luciana told Miguel she would wait for the bus and she'd see him when she returned.

As Perla and Carito made the beds in the employees' quarters they vitched and moaned about Luciana [So what else is new?] and Perla said she would see to it that Juan did something to mess things up for Luciana. She advised Carito to take advantage of Miguel's upcoming sadness because sadness makes men vulnerable.

David returned to the main house to be waylaid by Gracie who asked whether he had argued with Luciana. He told her no and mentioned that he had to prevent Miguel from leaving with her because of all the upcoming work. Gracie looked as though she had listened to Perla as she started stroking his arm, a gesture he didn't fail to notice.

Carito couldn't sleep because she couldn't stop thinking about the immigrant girl who had disappeared. Perla reminded her that they could get into trouble if they involved the police. She said she would talk to Juan once more.

David's anger hadn't abated yet as he talked about how Miguel and Luciana were adults and should have known how Miguel would be needed in the vineyard. Gracie told him to calm down as she continued stroking his arm. She started talking about Luciana needing help with this, but this didn't change his attitude. He emphasized that Miguel was needed in the vineyard. Gracie asked whether this wasn't about something else. Somewhere in this it came out that Luciana and Miguel weren't getting married so Gracie diverted David's attention to his own children, particularly Fernanda. He nodded, then left. She grinned at this result.

Luciana and Susan talked about this. Luciana felt that Miguel should stay.

Brian talked on the phone with someone of influence whom he was thanking, saying “You're saving a young girl from an unfair situation” and that he hoped she could get an early appointment. Just as he ended the call Lillian swept in, leaving her broom illegally parked in her haste to lay waste. He asked her what was wrong and got a very loud slap as an answer. When he asked if she was loca she said he could forget any help she had promised and that she would ruin him.

When David went to see Fernanda she vitched and moaned about ignoring her for Luciana. He was tired of this same old song. Fernanda – who virtually never sheds her brat – told him that Luciana didn't want to send the information to Tia Gracie when they were in Mexico. That Tia Gracie was nice enough not to complain about this. He was suspicious of this but she didn't let up, accusing Luciana of doing this so he'd want to see her. “Does it bother you that she's getting married?” was her exit line. David followed her, forbidding her to talk this way to him. He had to deal with employee problems. She made an accusation of favoritism and finally said something about being glad not to be living there when she goes to University [which should apply tests of emotional maturity in addition to academic entrance exams]. He tried to get her to understand that this was a matter of necessity to everyone but didn't get through her thick, childish skull. This girl needs a bloody good hiding.

Luciana was seated at the computer in the vineyard office when Gracie entered with the dreaded blue box. She told Luciana that she and David had heard about the wedding when they were in Argentina so they bought her and Miguel a gift. She went on about wanting to get something bigger but agreeing with David that this would be appropriate, ignoring the fact that Luciana wanted to say something. She urged her to open it and Luciana reluctantly complied. It was a leather picture frame containing a family-style photo of herself with David and his children. [Vitch.] “My family knew you'd love this,” she said with a grin. Luciana said nothing but wasn't fooled for one moment.

Lillian told Brian “This is over” and even dared him to rat her out to David. He replied that while he had promised he wouldn't help Luciana he couldn't say no to David when he asked for this favor. David was supporting his campaign. Lillian was surprised. Brian explained that he only asked the embassy to see her sooner, but that this would not necessarily resolve the situation. She was not convinced. “This is not a threat; it's a warning,” was her last sentence before she went to retrieve her broom. Brian mused to himself that he hoped this was worth it.

Luciana put the picture back into the box, put on the lid, and handed it back to Gracie with a “Thanks, but I'm returning it to you. Miguel and I are not getting married so it wouldn't be right to accept a wedding gift.”
What? Why are you not getting married?”
Because we decided it was better to wait. So if it doesn't bother you, I have things to do.” She resumed her seat at the computer.
Well, so I won't bother you,” Gracie said as she was heading for the door. She turned around to look at the computer screen and teased Luciana about making airline reservations. She asked where to and Luciana said she was going to Mexico for only a few days. When Luciana tried to dismiss her again she put the box on the desk, telling her to enjoy it as a bon voyage gift, grinned at her, and left. Luciana waited for her to be through the door before expressing her vexation on the box.

As she left the building Lillian ran into Adolfo and Erika. He invited her to join them for a drink but she tried – but not hard enough – to beg off. Erika suggested that her father accompany Lillian while she got some things done. She took her leave politely and left them together. Adolfo asked her what she'd like to drink and what was wrong.

Luciana looked briefly at the photo again and put it back in the box as Susan returned with two bottles of water. She showed the photo to Susan and told her that she was sure that Gracie was the one solely responsible for this “solely to vex me.” Susan asked what she thought Gracie's motive was and Luciana said she didn't know, “but maybe to rub this great trip in my face.” She was eager to get away to forget all this.
Miguel arrived and as he asked about Luciana's bus Susan looked at the internet and saw that a cold front was coming in. Luciana told him he had to stay because the grapes had to be protected. He didn't like having to make this choice. After some back and forth on this they agreed that León would go with her while Miguel would stay with the others to do what they had to do to protect the crop.

Perla went into Juan's office, happy that they would be rid of Luciana and saying he needed to do something to insure that she would never return. However, Juan had bigger worries because of the police investigation about the acid in the wine. Perla became suspicious, saying “But you have nothing to do with this, do you? Tell me the truth.”
Of course Juan denied any responsibility for this. Perla was easily manipulated into believing him. He said he'd like her to find out who brought the charges. She said she would talk to Carito and León to make sure they wouldn't speak ill of him during the investigation but couldn't promise that about anyone else. Mark called Juan's cell to tell him that the girl was still missing and he said “Call me when you have something” and ended the call.

Tano and León arrived in the office and Miguel updated them on the situation. He then told León he would need to accompany Luciana to Mexico so she wouldn't be alone. He agreed and left to pack and tell his mother. Susan said that the grapes couldn't be without heat for more than 20 minutes so they would need to act quickly and remain on watch all night. David arrived and Miguel told him he would stay to take care of this. Luciana decided she would stay the night and catch the early morning bus to Mexico. León returned and told David he would go to Mexico with Luciana. David told them they could take an early morning flight from San Francisco after getting through the night. He would take care of the plane tickets and Luciana's letters of recommendation.

Perla was still worried about the missing girl as Miguel entered the office to tell Juan about the emergency. They needed to buy more coverage for the grapes and immediately. Juan told Perla to cut a check for this. Just as Miguel was exiting Juan asked whether it was he who reported the ruined wine. Miguel didn't lie, saying “Of course it was I.” Juan sent Perla out of the room.
Whom do you think you are bringing these charges?”
I don't believe this. I'm the vineyard supervisor and it's my job. If you are abusing your friendship with David that is your problem. I'm looking to punish someone for this loss which came from much hard work.”
Do you have any proof?”
No, but that is up to the police in their investigation.”
Didn't it occur to you, Mikie, that you need proof to bring these charges?”
I did the right thing.”
Whatever your intentions you have embarrassed me.”
What have you got to worry about?”
Nothing. I had nothing to do with it.”
Well, the police will have to figure that out. Right now the thing to do is buy everything we need to protect the current crop.”
I sent Perla for the check. You can wait outside.”
Don't worry. I'm not going anywhere without it.”
He left the office. Juan looked worried.

David got off the phone after booking Luciana's flight. He handed her the folder with the necessary letters. More of the “we can't be together” stuff followed by a brief kiss and a long embrace. Luciana said goodbye and left.

thank you, Urban.

Wow, giving a portrait of YOURself and your "family" to someone as a wedding gift. Can we say "narcissistic?" Succubus loves to twist that knife. What a cold, calculating vitch, indeed.

david petitions Gut for his hrlp. Lilian slaps Gut.

And so it goes....zzzzzzzz

Urban, the screen shot was perfection and the recap a delight.

Your dialog translations were superb and you had so many wonderful lines, especially "Fernanda – who virtually never sheds her brat".

I slept through most of this so thank you for covering the events with humor and flair.

I can't help but ponder what is ever ill wake David up from sleepwalking through life. He is simply going through the motions. While his relationship with Bobby has strengthened, it is still precarious with Fernanda (mostly due to her stubbornness to allow David to follow his heart). As Fernanda does not seem inclined to change at the moment, David might best get on with rounding out the rest of his life. His embrace with Luciana was beyond touching. Yet, where is the fiery passion that they (and we) so desperately need?

Cesar rebuffed. Yet again.

Brian spews another lie and is managing to hang onto Lili by a fraying life line.

The subplots hold little interest (other than anything involving Sonia of course). This needs to move along.

Diana

It seemed that the mean girls were stripping LUCI'S bed because they were making faces as if those sheets were toxic. Grow freaking up.

Thanks, Urban. This was a totally snoozy episode, but your recap is absolutely fabulous. Just as he ended the call Lillian swept in, leaving her broom illegally parked in her haste to lay waste. -- teeheehee!

The TN keeps setting up stuff -- the acid, Erika, the missing immigrant girl, Susan taking back her abuser husband -- and then absolutely NOTHING happens. Will Luciana and Leon actually board the plane for Mexico? I doubt it.

I don't think they will.

There are too many pins set up and no balls to knock them over. Brian should really get out of town and apply for another police position elsewhere. He may have learned his lesson by now. In view of who Lillian is and TN rules there is no way Marta won't find out that he deported Luciana and Marcos.

As far as Sonia goes I'd like to see her turn on Lillian and eventually end the story with a new job and a new life. The writers seem to be setting her up to end up with Leon, but are they really right for each other?

Thank you UA

"who virtually never sheds her brat"

Did I miss the long courtship of Cesar and Graciela? I saw them at dinner twice so most of the I love you's and declarations of fidelity musta been by snapchat. Either that or Cesar is CRAZY.

Luciana - do I have to kiss uncle Dave

Miguel - priorities? When a grape vine can lick me head to toe like Luciana we'll talk.

Leon - I can wear my new shirt on my trip

Fernanda - must I leave for university, betcha obedience school has classes online

Graciela - it was this photo or the selfie kissing

Susan - am I the only one that watches the weather channel?

Brian - never dreamed it was this hard to get dog poo off your shoe

Juan - good thing Perla Vision ain't 20/20

Tofie, your list is hilarious. Miguel's is my No. 1.

Love that last one, Tofie.

The photo was specifically to stab Luciana to the heart. Nothing is actually going on at this point and David isn't truly interested in Gracie. The only thing that would get him into her bed is being drunk or drugged.

Is anyone else betting that FerBrat will not go away to college? I wonder whether she is even making the grade.

Tofie...Yay..I have been missing your lists !!! My favorites are Leon's and Soo-sun's. Ha

Fer brings back a lot of bad memories of detention halls with mean teen girls. ....wearisome juvenile ego. The world revolves around moi.

Thanks so much Urban. It just feels like this story is really dragging on lately with very little movement in the plot. Thank you for making the episode readable and enjoyable.

DisGracie is so disingenuous and such a faker. What other beautiful blonde successful woman gives up everything to dedicate to her "family" which aren't her husband and kids? She keeps talking about how important her "family" is to her and how dedicated she is to her "sobrinos" and how much they "need" her. She also thinks she can "psych" Luciana by showing her the happy little family photo. She totally underestimates Luciana. DisGracie is so adept at being a faker that she thinks she can fool everyone. Problem is she's mostly adept at fooling men through manipulation and trickery.

Oh and when Lilian slapped Gutierrez, he should have just thrown her out and booked her for assault. She's pretending to have so much power and authority, but it's all fake too. Her "contacts" are David's business contacts and perhaps old friends of Lisa's. I don't know how he could be so swayed by her "temptations". Maybe like Elvis, he will later sing to her, "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog."

Miguel is getting on my nerves. He reminds me of a panting little dog who keeps sitting up with his paws up waiting for his treat

Cynthia: Erika needs to hurry up & get Miguel out of the drama QUICK!

Susanlynn: FerBrat will get her KARMA sooner or later! The big ego will get popped at some point.

UA: Luciana is BORING1

DisGracie is best at fooling herself into thinking she's all that and a bag of chips. I'm betting she has changed very little from college.

And is she as successful as she says she is? What is the real deal there?

All three novelas we're watching have huge potential for villain parents and children to turn on each other. Evil is its own punishment.

Urban, that was fun reading. Will Luciana actually leave or not? Who knows and who cares. This entire novela seems stalled with no plan for giving viewers anything to feel it's going anywhere. Zinging recaps and commenters are what keeps me checking in. Muchas gracias.
Helen

Urban, your question as to whether DisGracie is really that successful is a good one. Where is she getting her money from? Are her paintings REALLY that valuable and in demand and it this make her a millionaire? I am having a very hard time swallowing that one.

Thank you UA!

Steve, AMEN on Erika needing to move in on Miguel and soon. He deserves better than he's getting.

I was LMAO at the cold grapes. I have no idea if that's a real thing in winemaking but in this show it was totally a plot device. For a few minutes I thought they were setting up that David would "just have" to go with her. But I guess that would have required some actual action from Grumpy.

What is David to do? Almost every time he sees Luciana or hears about her she's run off with Miguel or going to or tongue kissing him, or Miguel snarls at him while she stares David down daring him to react. She gives the guy nothing and seems put out when David does something for her, well, until last night after he bought her a plane ticket and all that got him a peck on the edge of the mouth.

Heck, Graciela has at least been nice to Cesar and she's not even into him.

DY77, with frozen grapes, you will get no grape harvest. The frost will totally ruin the crop. It's not just winemaking, but with every crop in the winter. It happens with oranges all the time, a frost comes and the oranges are ruined.

I don't know of anyone that uses wood burning heaters or do they plan huge fires. Oil or electric or they use a sprinkler system

There is a section on frost protection on this website:
https://winemakermag.com/921-frost-protection

In France it seems they use the wood burning fires. Other places in California use huge fans or a sprinkler system.

Urban--You provided us with a recap which was way better than the episode itself. I cringe every time I see Miguel physically clutch Luci. I'm tired of their vineyard kisses, too.

I don't think Gracie knew the wedding was off when she gave Luci the framed photo. I may have dozed off, but I certainly caught the muscle fondling reward she was getting through David's shirt.

Has anyone noticed that it's only Luciana who says, "we can't be together?" And it's David who goes along and says nothing? Well, ok, he actually came out and made that "although we are not together" speech in the office. Juan definitely caught the nuance of that statement.

Someone earlier mentioned the beginning credits roll. I also noticed that when they are shown together they are not looking at each other. That should have given all of us a BIG clue as to where this telenovela was going to go. Arrrghhhh!

I agree, burning wood in the vineyards is very old-fashioned. For a beautiful vision of how it was done in post WWII California, get ahold of the film, A Walk in the Clouds (with Keanu Reeves).

Anita..I remember that film...Quite romantic.

I am not invested in any of these people. However, the actress playing DisGracie is doing a great job of portraying a porcelain doll with a heart of ice...Excellent villain. I cannot buy a guy like Gut putting up with threats from someone like Lilian. I cannot accept that he is really in love with Marta if he is servicing Lilian. The guy playing Juan is guaypo but has a limited number of facial expressions. HE folds his arms when vexed. His ENglish is very good, however. I wonder how he would do as a galan.

Off topic: as a lifelong, staunch Alabama Crimson Tide fan, I applaud the Clemson Tigers on winning their 2nd national championship in school history last night. Even though it was at my team's expense.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

I can not see an "ON Duty" cop getting the P-fork slapped out of him in his office without some handcuffs coming out.

@ Susanlyn The actor playing Juan is Christian De La Campa who played a "Galan" on Tierra de Reyes on Telemundo. He is good at playing a galan too.

Portraying the antagonist is good & makes good $$$!

anainCA..Thanks for that information. I did not see that telenovela. I think that I would prefer to see him as a galan, and perhaps he is more suited to be the good guy. He is very handsome.

Hey, Urban, thanks a million! Everybody has said it all. Tofie! Thanks, girl. If this show can get you generating your lists again, it can't be all bad! Miguel's line is my fave!

I guess the kiss that missed Dave's lips keeps Luci from being a cheater. Too bad all the suspense they can come up with is will she/won't she leave. . . delayed action response on the tainted wine. . .Lilli's threats! Give me a break! If all he's got going for him is that old bag's good graces, he's got no business being the sheriff of anything. He can't even keep that heffa out of his office! She just waltzes in whenever she damned well pleases and now she's bitch-slapping him! Pitiful.

I'm done fussin'. Thanks, Urban!

Lila..GO, girl. I can't believe that GUt lets Lilian use and abuse him. Eek He must think that keeping his secret from Marta is worth being under Lilian's thumb and he must really be crazy about Marta.

Susanlynn, Gut is a gutless whore! Doesn't Marta know that Gut is servicing Lillian? Nobody expects a man that age to be celibate, but to be working for a woman who hates your very shadow and know that the guy you're crushing on is literally crushing your bitch boss! That's just nasty!

I think that falling for Marta is some kind of Karma for Gutierrez due to his denial of his roots and his dalliance with she-devil Lillian. We have many more episodes to go before we'll know who this guy really is.

I doubt Marta knows that he's boinking Lillian. If she ever walks in on them (unlikely, but what do the writers care about that?) he's finished in her eyes.

Urban, good recap. In spite of the same old same old. As you said "we can't be together"song. It should go platium then gold, then diamond. I wish they'd go and work through this quickly, it's getting boring.Alot

I really don't like fernandna. She is
Such a brat. A nasty one. He should send her away now, she's sickeningly
Annoying.
Miguel should go away. Without Lucy. Ok Hopefully the writers will come up with something in this plot that won't
Make me yawn. SOON!!!!WOULD BE GOOD!

Thanks Urban.
