Vino el Amor #80, Tuesday, February 21, 2017: Vino el New Novias
This episode was kind of a mish-mash transitional episode. David is happy, not grumpy, but he makes a lot of other people grumpy with the news that he's got a new girlfriend! And her name is not Gracie, which makes Gracie quite unhappy. Fer is happy about her new boyfriend, but not so happy about Dad's new girlfriend. Miguel still seems like he's heading for a new novia himself though, even though he still keeps reaching out to the old one.
(Just a small note that I'm scheduling this post early because I'll be busy all day Wednesday and Thursday. So if I missed anything, just please correct me in the comments. Thanks in advance for all comments!)
Some scenes combined, since this episode is a big mish-mash:
- Fer and Tia Gracie are having a chat about David letting everyone go into Lisa's room again. Gracie finds it alarming. Fer updates Gracie about how David wants her to study harder. And she must or he won't let her go out and then she won't see Tano. She tells Gracie that they kissed. Gracie tells Fer she supports her but they need to figure out what is up with David.
- Adolfo and Erika are trying out their young wine. Adolfo is satisfied and happy with her work. Miguel comes in and Adolfo praises his work. Miguel apologizes for the accusations against him, but Adolfo trusts him. Some more praise and Miguel says that while he is good with equipment, Erika's intelligence is what saved the day. That was pretty smart of Miguel because Adolfo promotes him right then and there to the new jefe of the vineyard. Will Miguel accept the new job?
- Fer and Gracie finish their talk and Fer hustles off to see Tano. She opens the door to see Lilian coming in and makes a quick getaway. Gracie asks Lilian what the drama is, who settles in and tells her it doesn't matter what she says; Gracie is going to buy the olive oil farm.
- Bobby yanks Luciana around the wine vats to tell her that he's excited because David is letting the kids go into Lisa's room. It's apparently a sign that he is grumpy no more. Then Bobby fills in Luciana on something derogatory Lilian said about immigrants when David mentioned donating some of Lisa's clothing to them.
- Gracie isn't inclined to do what Lilian wants her to do (buy the farm) and asks her if she's crazy. Lilian says Gracie will do it for two reasons. It will help David and it will serve Gracie's purposes for snagging David. Gracie hesitates. She points out David doesn't want to be her business partner anymore. Lilian stands firm, she's buying the farm. And if she loses David, at least she'll have a profitable olive oil farm!
- Girl talk time! Actually this starts as Mother-in-Law talk time with no wine to ease the pain. Cesar praises David for opening up Lisa's room and is really happy for David that David is happy and moving on with life now. The only one who isn't happy, says David, is Lilian. Well, she is difficult, says Cesar. David mentions that Gracie even offered to speak with her but Cesar is skeptical. David admits the only reason she still gets to live with him is the children.
- Juan gets a visit to his office from Gracie and Lilian, who would like an update on how his olive oil farm purchase is going. Apparently the land is going to cost Juan and David more than thought previously. And Senor Kent told him there is another offer pending. Gracie says it's her! Juan is FURIOUS about this and the ladies let him know there's really no changing this fact. He calls them malditas and traitors and yeah, he's mad!
- Yay; the boys did pour themselves some wine for their talk time! They drink to his family being happy. David credits Luciana. Cesar says that David's sooooo in love with Luciana; it shows and it's good. David says it's time his kids know he's with Luciana.
- Juan is really unhappy with being outbid for the olive oil farm. Lilian and Gracie taunt him a bit, and Gracie refuses to tell him what her bid was. He stomps out of his office and Gracie and Lilian enjoy his leaving in a snit.
- Cesar realizes not everyone in the family will be happy about this new novia news and advises David to be careful with how he breaks the news. Bobby will accept it, yes. Fer, not so much. And then there's Gracie and Lilian. David says his children are the most important thing. Cesar warns him to watch out for Gracie doing something bad. David is sure that won't happen.
- Fer breaks the news to Tano that her father thinks she should focus on her studies and getting into university, instead of Tano. She's surprised when Tano agrees with this. He's always wanted to finish his studies.
- Luciana pesters Carito about Miguel. Carito tells her if she wants to fight with him, leave her out of it. Luciana says she's misinterpreted things. Miguel has been implicated in illegal immigrant trafficking and Luciana needs Carito's help to help Miguel. Carito gets nervous with Luciana's questioning. She insists that Miguel has nothing to do with illegal immigrant trafficking, and the girl that spoke with the detectives came alone, but skirts around how she knows this for sure. Luciana just wants Carito to vaguely ask if anyone she knows in the community was trafficked in with Ingrid. Susan and Cesar treated an immigrant who had been in a room with her, so there must be others who spotted her. They could give a statement to the police and clear Miguel. Carito vaguely agrees and nervously hustles off.
- Tano makes Fer see the wisdom of higher education. She'll start studying and he will talk to her father. They agree to date secretly until she gets that exam behind her. He will make sure that she will study and he will return to community college. You know what, I like them together! Even if the secret dating part is boneheaded. Tano is coming from a good place here and seems like he'll be a good influence on Fer.
- Juan comes home to Perla, ranting about Lilian and Gracie. He will need to raise even more money now. Perla offers him some of hers. Probably not enough. He checks her account. Turns out she's a saver and doesn't need to send any money to Mexico so he'll take it. He tells her he loves her and goes to meet Mark at a bar. Perla is happy.
- Miguel is being tentative about the promotion. Erika questions Miguel and he tells her what Tano said the detective said about the illegal immigrant allegation. Erika thinks Miguel is worrywarting too much. Miguel wants to go talk to Luciana about things.
- Uh-oh, a dad and kids meeting has been called...Did Fer get caught with Tano? Did she get an F on a test? Did Bobby's bully tell on him for something? Did he get benched from the travel soccer team?
- The meeting is to tell the kids why they suddenly can go into Lisa's room! Mom will always have a special place in his heart, but Dad is ready again to fall in love with someone new now! Fer doesn't get why he'd want a new girlfriend. David explains that love with a new novia will means that life is sunshine and rainbows and they will begin a new family. Bobby is cool with it since Grumpy Dad is no longer sad nor grumpy. Fer is not as positive about this new girlfriend of Dad's.
- Erika is annoyed. She believes Miguel and wants to help, but he insists on bringing Luciana into everything. Erika thinks that Luciana keeps him from progressing with his life. I agree. Erika stomps off, Luciana-style, and Miguel makes a call to, you guessed it, Luciana.
- Luciana and Miguel strategize on how to get the allegations dropped. He's worried about Susan and Luciana getting involved and investigating. She tells him about the person Susan and Cesar found. Miguel does not want Luciana to get into danger. He also doesn't want to talk about what's up with her and David. He thanks her for helping and hangs up.
- Uh-oh, Perla was eating a snack alone in Juan's apartment when that awful grungy Mark busts in, looking for Juan. They trade barbs at each other and then Mark lunges for Perla's throat! He tells her he's mad she told Juan about him bothering her. Next time, anything can happen, Mark threatens. Perla is left alone, this time, gasping for air.
- Bobby notices that Fer is less than thrilled with their dad's news. Fer doesn't want a new mom. Bobby wants dad to be happy. They get in a typical sibling hollering match over this, and Lilian breaks it up. Fer tells her that dad told them about his new girlfriend, and she's not happy. Fer leaves the room and Lilian asks Bobby what he thinks. Bobby's fine with a new girlfriend for Dad, as long as it's someone like Luciana. He excuses Lilian and gets back to his gaming.
- Fer goes to her mom's room and plays with a box of her scarfs. Gracie comes in and is a little horrified when she first spots this, but plays nice. Gracie asks how things went with Tano, and Fer confirms that they are now novios, but novios that will have to sneak around, as Dad wants her to prioritize studying. Can Gracie help her? Gracie helps by advising her to keep up the sneaking around. Gracie notices that Fer isn't as happy as a new novia would be. Fer admits she's worried about her dad and Gracie asks why. Fer says her dad has a new novia now himiself; cue the implosion within Gracie... but she hides it well and only lets out one "no puede ser." Then she tells Fer this is awful, because your new stepmother will ruin your life! Fer just thinks things are going too fast, but she does want her dad to be happy and in love with someone. But she does think her aunt has a point. Speaking of too fast, Fer's musings get Gracie talking a mile a minute about how the kids will be sent away to boarding school and new children will be born and it's clear (as if it wasn't before) that Gracie is definitely not Team Yay Dad Has a New Girlfriend. (When she gets going with the rushed speaking, I have a hard time understanding her, so please let me know if I missed anything.) Fer asks Gracie for her help in dealing with the situation. Gracie pretends to beg off and says they'll have to respect David's decisions, but Fer insists she help derail the new novia as she is not prepared to accept a new stepmother.
- Erika tells her dad that she's annoyed Miguel is still dealing with his old vineyard and Luciana. Adolfo has no problem with Miguel going to Luciana for help with his legal troubles, but he's worried he's not reciprocating Erika's feelings, and Erika will get hurt. Erika correctly thinks that's on her. Adolfo says that Erika needs to be patient. Erika is frustrated by the whole thing and Luciana still being a thing. Adolfo tells her that in love, nothing is easy. He's sure Miguel will see how fabulous Erika is.
- Perla stews in the apartment. Juan comes in. She tells him she's fine when he asks, and wants to go out to the vineyard. She asks him to promise all will go well in the end and he does.
- After she leaves, Mark comes to the apartment to tell Juan that it seems people in Sonoma enjoy and really need illegal prescription drugs. So they're going into that business! Juan is psyched. He needs more money to counter-offer on the olive oil farm. Muhahahahaha, cackles Juan. Finally David will suffer for all he has done to Juan.
- In the name of "helping Miguel," Susan and Luciana discuss that Cesar is asking around but nothing is really coming up except that one guy that Cesar is talking to, and now that guy has clammed up because he's scared. They vent about how that coward Juan gave the police Miguel's name. Then they compare notes on how nervous and strange Carito and Perla are acting. Well, that's enough "helping" Miguel, Luciana has to help David!
- Mark smells an opportunity to increase his share of the profits and says this will cost Juan. Juan offers him a share of the olive oil farm, with all the earnings from the immigrants. Mark suspects this offer is a trick. Juan denies it and offers a 20% share of olive oil farming plus illegal immigrant earnings, but Juan just needs some money upfront to pay off some credit. Mark agrees as long as he can be there to sign the contract.
- Neither studying nor dating Tano, Fer instead meets her friends in town. They want to know why she changed her relationship status online to "It's Complicated." She tells them it's nothing formal, but they're novios! SQUEEEEEE. Obviously, says her friend, Tano will take Fer to prom. But Fer notes that she must study before she's named prom queen, as she promised dad. One friend compares Tano and Fer to Romeo and Juliet. Um, no. Even Fer agrees, saying she hopes she and Tano will have a happy ending. Her friends notice that Fer is not squeeing along with them, and ask her what's up. She confides in them about her dad and his new girlfriend. One friend hates her dad's spouse so she gets what Fer is thinking. The other friend loves her stepdad and thinks Fer's grumpy Dad is muy guapo so she can see why he's attracting new girlfriends. Doesn't she want him to be happy? Fer is not so sure. But she sure knows she does not want a stepmother.
Fer's reaction to that "guapo comment" is pretty normal for a teenage daughter, even if her grumpy dad is indeed muy guapo. |
- Lilian is excited to pick out a perfect dress for the election-night party with Sonia's help. Sonia has a slinky teal green dress she found in Lisa's room and Lilian yanks it from her. Marta comes in and Lilian says despite her lack of style, she will ask her opinion on what she should wear - a slinky black number or the teal dress. Marta zings her: "Aunque la mona se vista de ceda, mona se queda" ("Even if the monkey dresses in silk, it's still a monkey") and leaves. Lilian goes ballistic on the dresses.
- Carito fills in Perla about the cops investigating Miguel and about the immigrant guy who spilled that he came in with Ingrid. She's going to tell Juan so he'll do something, or this could cause problems for all of them. Perla doesn't seem as anxious to help as she does to keep it all quiet. Carito is worried Luciana is going to say something that will make things worse for all of them. Perla tells Carito to warn Luciana to stay out of all this.
- Miguel and Erika get their flirt on while discussing how smaller bottles will make for better young wine and their knowledge will make his first bottle of wine for this vineyard a great one.
- Luciana brings a paper into David's office and they flirt a bit while discussing the upcoming presentation of his latest offer for the olive oil farm. Then Gracie busts in. She recommends that they entertain some new investors (in the vineyard, I think) as one big happy family. She's still got her notes from Argentina. David tells Gracie that Luciana should be included too in the tasting. Luciana and Gracie both make some awesome faces in this scene (see the top screencap for Luciana).
- David escorts Gracie out of his office to go work on setting up this fete, then he tells Luciana that he told the kids that he may have a new novia and they took it well. Soon he will tell them that he is in love with Luciana. The episode ends as face-gnawing ensues.

"that's enough "helping" Miguel, Luciana has to help David"
Agree. She does her job and kisses him but that is where it ends. Nothing proactive for David but a suggestion or two out of her university text books. For Miguel she spends an inordinate amount of time and effort and excludes David.
I was fooled thinking Luciana wound insist and tell Miguel his plan for retrieving her one day from David was foolish. Instead she let him brush it off easily with his resolve to continue on his quest. Erika has a point, Luciana is encouraging him.
More interesting to Luciana was Bobby mentioning he overheard Graciela questioning David why he was opening Lisa's room.
Why in the world would Erika chase Miguel? She cannot be that desperate for a guy that is not as good as he thinks. Come on girl let him run back to Luciana and find a guy that wants you back.
David continues to climb further out that limb. Boy will he be surprised when Luciana saws it off.
Surprisingly, I like Tano and Fernanda too. Both of them act differently together in a good way than they do apart.
I really enjoyed the look on Luci and then David's faces when DisGracielllla happily inserted herself and her Mom into the meeting with the investors. It Was like "ooohhh Boy, OK." feom Luci, and then a "Yeah Sheezo, I know." from David.
Tano does seem to be a positive influence on FerBrat but David has a point. She needs to pull her grades up ASAP if she wants to go to a decent university. But what happens when she has to leave the area and her Romeo?
Smaller bottles are better for young wine? I never heard this but since young wine isn't going to be as expensive as a vintage one this could mean attracting more wine novices and would make for a good product for restaurants and hotels. For that alone it's a smart idea.
DisGracie is delusional if she thinks that buying the olive grove would help her ensnare David. She might have the idea that she could cut off the water to the vineyard and blackmail David into marrying her, but that would be beyond stupid.
Lisa has been dead for at least 2.5 years so it is not too soon for David to look for love again. FerBrat is being monstrously selfish about this, particularly since she is now 18 and will soon go to college (or so she thinks). I've repeatedly said I don't think she will and I'm still standing on this. DisGracie's crap about a stepmother sending her and Bobby away and having more children is her own narcissistic projection. This is what she would do. Luciana wouldn't do any such thing (and If I were Luciana I wouldn't have forgiven FerBrat over the Earring Incident).
I'm impressed with how you managed to capture Luci's rather off beat expressions in your screen shots. "Uh-oh, a dad and kids meeting has been called...Did Fer get caught with Tano? Did she get an F on a test? Did Bobby's bully tell on him for something?" was my favorite but also enjoyed many others including "Neither studying nor dating Tano, Fer instead meets her friends in town".
"Cesar warns him to watch out for Gracie doing something bad. David is sure that won't happen". Well, we are positive that it will so we echo Cesar's warning as well.
"Lilian stands firm, she's buying the farm. And if she loses David, at least she'll have a profitable olive oil farm!" Although the advice was not coming from a loving perspective (which she is not capable of), it was sound advice. Parlay all that artistic talent into another revenue source. "He's sure Miguel will see how fabulous Erika is". Yes, Adolfo, we are with you there.
I also find Fer and Tano endearing. Fer seems to have no inclination to further her studies (I get the impression she is not trying because she doesn't care. I am sure she is capable). Luciana might be able to "instill" the love of wine in her yet.
Urban, I hope something happens soon to derail the Luciana "hate" train. But I don't think anything short of death is going to derail Gracie at this point.
I'm scratching my head as to why David announced he has a girl friend but didn't name Luci. Guess he's under the misconception the news will be greeted with open arms. Well, it will by Bobby at least.
Diana
"One friend compares Tano and Fer to Romeo and Juliet. Um, no." Yikes, these girls really need to study more!
D, I am under the impression he thinks spoon feeding his kids (FerBrat) baby-sized bites will be easier than one big chomping mouthful.
If David could just secretly crawl into the attic one day and be quiet, Woo Hoo. ! ... would he get an earful.
I'm thinking that because he didn't name her, they don't think it's Luci. I'm excluding Graciela of course.
Surprise, surprise!
Diana
DisGracie will get homicidal again. I'm sure she will make at least one attempt on Luciana's life before this series is over but she will plan it in advance. When she went after Lisa in episode 4 I don't think she planned the murder in advance.
I wouldn't be surprised if she goes after Marta just to inflict personal pain on Luciana.
Diana: Bobby will be thrilled about David's new GF (Luciana), but we all know FerBrat will NOT be happy about it when she finds out.
Kirby: FerBrat will NEVER go to college because she wants to bleech & whine about Luciana being with David, etc.,
Luciana is safe. She has David and Miguel protecting her. It's David I worry about, not much Cesar and Bobby can do to save him from ruin.
Now that the giant has awaken, so to speak, their plans are hitting a lot of obstacles they dd not forsee, and plan for, and they are both getting desperate. Neither of them feels like they have the luxury of time any more and are beginning to make mistakes out of hurrying and not having a viable "plan B" when things have changed drastically.
As to giving him 20% of the olive business, that is worse. Mark isn't a complete idiot and would find a way to get more.
This all puts Perla on the chopping block.
I'm actually hoping Graciela and Lilian get the olive grove, so David can open his eyes about them. He's lucky Fer and Bobby have turned out as well as they have with those two vipers hanging around.
Advice to David: Better just to tell the kids you're starting to date again. Period. Skip the falling in love part. If Fer thinks it's just casual dating, Luciana will have time to grow on her more before Fer realizes Lu’s staying for good. Oops, where's my head. This is a TN.
I agree about Luci. I have had fifty of those little fan club builders try and pull that on me, a few successfully when I was young and dumb. I do not care who she eventually mates with. I am just interested in seeing these side wars coming to a head. They keep trying to sidetrack us with all this monkey business about they (M&L) having been childhood friends, and even though they gave Miggy's idea a shot, and it didn't work out, and they just really care about each other , you know, like brother and sister. blah blahblah, Well, I never tried to lick all my sisters makeup off.
I'm going to play devil's advocate for a minute and say that Luciana helping Miguel clear his name is/was intended to show that she's still his bestie and no hard feelings between them after she stomped on his heart, but the execution somewhat botches it because it's coming after this borderline ridiculously long drought of anything significant involving David and Luciana as a couple. Yay, they're finally trying to make a go of it (slow and low, that is the tempo!), but first she has to prove her ex isn't a saboteur and/or coyote? Really, show?
And Juan basically playing himself by declaring that the Axis of Evil was over and it was everyone for themselves, so Graciela and Lilian making him flip out by making a go for Los Olivos LLC was the second best thing in the episode. (The first involved Sonia, Lilian, and dresses.) His cutting Mark in on the buy for a advance towards it, though...combined with Mark putting his grungy hands on Perla yet again? I dunno. Thus far, while there's been a fair amount of lip service, neither Juan nor Mark has actively appeared to try to screw over the other person (Perla's original cellphone notwithstanding by one degree of separation). We kinda need one of them to get, well, active.
Has anyone else noticed that Disgrace has been wearing a lot of bright red clothing lately? I think this is symbolic of her being Satan's bride. Yikes, the color really stands out against her pale skin.
I was wondering why Lilian suddenly went all BSC on those innocent dresses. That is the most active I have ever seen Lilian. Those vitamins must be kicking in.
Men seem to find someone else after their spouse has died or they have divorced. my cousin remarried about a year after his wife died, and my friend starred dating less than a year after his wife died. Women often find it harder to let go and move on . I have seen someone stop dating because his kids did not want him to date .
.
Juan loves to throw percentages at Marked. I think it is because they went to high school together and Juan knows that Marked is dumber than dirt and failed all his msyh courses. He will never be able to figure out exactly how much 20% is, so Juan can give him a couple hundred and tell him, "So, that's your share of the million..20%."
On OJ Mark: His Karma will be coming!
But, she is just too self absorbed and dumb to do anything about it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, so is a squirrel, but it sure knows what to do. !
Or like somebody said, "Mannn, he so dum, he dont eben no he dum."
Tofie, I like Miguel but I don't know that Luciana was really all that helpful and I think now she'd pick David. Although reading Bill C's comment, I agree that Luciana is probably motivated by youthful loyalties towards helping Miguel.
Niecie, I so want Gracie and Lilian to get the olive oil grove! Just to thwart Juan and Mark.
Julie, well said on Perla. I hate seeing Mark torture her but she's not doing anything to help herself and her instincts are all wrong.
Julie, as for Perla, I am not sure why she seems to have no sense. Maybe growing up, no motherly figure around to help her mature and she seems to have resented Marta and any good advice from her. Does anyone remember what Perla's story was in the beginning? All I remember was on the first show she had a crush on Juan and asked to be his secretary. Where were her parents/grandparents/guardians all this time? Was she an orphan?
As for Juan, I cannot understand him wanting to hand over 20% of the olive oil business to Grungy Mark. He has to be totally stupid to do something like that. Mark is just your run of the mill thug, nothing redeeming about him at all.
"You can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig"that was perfect for lils.
And so funny. Marta is still in love with gut.
Mark the bully. Next.
When is fer going to get a clue and do
Her own thinking? She is an annoying
Child. Her dad should be miserable so
She can be happy, she's a selfish lil
Brat. Ok bye. Thanks dy77.
