Apples
rarely fall far from their trees and we have some proof here.
Alonso, Cecelia, and Emiliano all show whose children they are. What
they do in a crisis and how they feel about it will be determining
factors in their lives. Our tale is full of these unfortunates.
Chapter
Two: Cecelia Fears for her Life
Regina
withheld her anger to the best of her ability.
“How
could you think that I had anything to do with the murder of that
girl? Don't you know me? Do you think I could do something like
this?”
“Your
people are involved in this matter. You told me yourself –”
“I
told you that my people investigated.”
“Then
therefore you have to learn to give orders. You might say one thing
and they hear something else.”
“Do
you have proof?”
“That
is in process. I will find out.”
“
So
you have drawn your own conclusions.”
“I
could be mistaken. I hope so, Regina. I'm going to talk to my son.”
“You
can't go; leave him alone. You're not going to do anything to him to
make him think he is of no importance.”
“I
have a lot to say.”
“I
don't know there is much to say. I am sick of your mistreatment.
You almost called me a murderer. Is that how you want to be with me?
Tell me now because I don't want to spend another second more of my
life with someone who doesn't want me at his side.”
“Of
course I want you at my side. I always want you at my side. Can you
say the same?”
Upstairs
another marriage was imploding as Omar shouted at Javier to get out.
Without taking his eyes off the old man Javier quickly put on his
pants and started for the door but not fast enough to avoid being
shoved by the outraged husband. Natalia quickly put on the robe of
her negligee, watching her husband carefully.
Emiliano
returned to his room and closed the door as he started to cry. He
took out his cell phone from under the mattress and texted Hugo that
he was going to escape from his home.
Omar
chased Javier down the stairs, shouting for his son's bodyguards.
Two men in dark grey suits ran in and grabbed Javier, who struggled
against them. Omar came to the bottom of the stairs and addressed
him as though he were a Roman emperor passing a death sentence.
“I
don't want you anywhere near my wife. Did you hear that, trash?”
He slapped him hard enough to knock him to the side. “The next
time you cross my path you won't be so lucky.” He looked at the
guards. “Get him out of here,” then called one of them back. “I
want this man followed. I want to know everything about him. Let's
go!”
The
man left. Omar stood at the bottom of the stairs, the steam still
coming out of his ears. Natalia was at the top of the stairs,
looking down in fright. He shook his fist at her.
Cecelia
smoked as she looked at a news story on the internet about Alonso and
Regina. She was shaking as she picked something up, possibly
cocaine, and heard the door open and footsteps coming up the stairs.
It was Mario, who had let himself in.
“It
was you. You ordered her killed,” she accused. “Why did you do
that?”
“Why
don't you take my calls?”
“She
was my friend.”
“I
did it for you. To protect you. When the video becomes known, there
will be an investigation. Since they can't interrogate Florencia,
they will interrogate you.”
“And
you, too.”
“Me?
No. Because you won't reveal I'm involved. Correct?” He paused.
“You could have ended up being killed. I had to eliminate her; I
had no other options.”
“In
any case, they will question me. My phone number would be on her
cell phone in her contacts.”
“Don't
worry; her work phone was destroyed. Her home number was intact, but
it wasn't in her name. I never allow that.”
“You
have another daughter, the Senator. She's the only thing that's
important to you.”
“To
me you are the same. I love you as much as her.”
“Then
why did you never give me your name? Why does she get to be by your
side?”
“Enough!
I want you to stay here. Don't go out for anything.” He held out
his hand. “Give me your cell phone.”
She
looked at him with suspicion.
“Why
do you want it?”
“Give
it to me.”
She
reluctantly handed it to him. He immediately took a new one out of
his pocket.
“I
want you to use this one.” He put it on the table. “It will be
in your name. From this day forward you will talk only to me. Is
that clear?”
He
turned and left without another word.
“They
mistreated me,” Teresa said to Gerardo. She loved playing the
victim. Her hair was childishly arranged in a ponytail with bangs,
as though she thought she was Gidget from a 1950s movie. Gerardo did
not look at her, as he was watching the casino boss. “They treated
me like a criminal.”
“I'm
sorry, Senora. Senator, there was a little incident. Let's talk
alone.”
“No,”
Teresa said. “I want you to talk in front of me, not behind my
back.”
“Teresa,”
said Gerardo through clenched teeth. “Let me handle this matter.”
“If
the lady will behave, I'll have my employees escort her to the bar
for a few drinks on the house.”
“Thanks
a lot, but no,” she said.
“Teresa,”
Gerardo said, turning her around to face him. He was obviously
losing patience. “Wait for me there. I will take care of this.”
“Alright.”
She took her purse and left the room. The two security men followed
her and closed the door.
“I
want you to thoroughly explain what happened. I want to compare to
see if what the lady said was true.”
“I
assure you that we did not mistreat her. The lady was gambling all
day and as the money went she asked for a loan.”
“You
gave it to her?”
“Yes,
we made a generous loan but when it came time to pay up she started
to shout and insult us...”
“A
generous loan? How much are we talking about?”
“Twenty
thousand dollars.”
Mario
spoke to Almiró de Lucia in his car. He did not look him in the
face, but looked straight ahead through the windshield. He was
nervous, wanting things to be over and done with. He told the man he
wanted Cecelia followed as well; she was nervous and scared. He did
not want any errors. “But if there are, you know what you will
have to do.”
“It
will be as you say, Sir,” de Lucia said. He got out of the car and
Mario pulled away without even a look.
Omar
slapped Natalia almost harder than he had done to Javier. She fell
to her right, her upper body against the foot of the bed.
“Tramp!
You belong in the garbage!”
Natalia
slipped down to the floor and turned toward Omar, whose face became a
frightening mask, like that of a horror movie demon.
“Never
will you humiliate me and my son again! Slut! Whore! How dare you
do this. You have everything a woman would want. What is it with
you? What?” He got to his feet.
Natalia
was cringing and weeping.
“I
felt alone! This 'garbage' –”
“Shut
up! Shut up!” He kicked her buttocks twice. “Don't give me that
story. You have no right to complain about the life I've given you.
I gave you everything, everything! What else have you done? What
more have you done behind my back?”
She
tried to speak, but he kicked her twice more in the same place.
“Please,
please,” she said, groping for other words.
“Your
son – your son – will hear of this. He'll hear what sort of
mother he has.”
“No,
no!” she said as he marched out the door. He did not look back as
she continued to cry out and get to her knees.
Cecelia
opened the door to Deborah, who wore the same red dress as the night
before during her disagreeable encounter with Alonso.
“Were
you followed?”
“No,
no; I don't think so,” she said as she entered. Cecelia looked
outside before closing the door.
“You
can't not think. You have to be careful,” she said as she followed
Deborah up the stairs.
“Why,
Cecelia, why?”
“You
haven't asked that yet? Florencia is dead.”
“Yes,
I know. They told me earlier.” [E-mail
me if I got this one wrong.]
“I
can't believe you could be so foolish. They killed her. Deborah,
you have to help me. If it became known that Florencia was working
with me it will be very serious.”
“I
don't know. We both have our own problems.” She started up the
stairs.
“What
do you mean? Why? Are you looking for a place to hide?” Cecelia
followed her up.
“No,
no,” she said as she got to the bar and poured herself a drink.
“It's that I was with the governor and –”
“And?”
“I
made a mistake. I made a mistake and I gave him...” She swished
the ice and booze in her glass. “I gave him an infection.”
Cecelia
paused for a second.
“That
was stupid. Did you tell my father? Yes or no. Since before the
day you caught it you were supposed to be the governor's exclusive
property. You may have ruined everything and can't save yourself.”
“I
don't know whether to tell the truth or not. And wasn't it you who
told me we can't tell your father everything? That we could end up
dead because of what we know?”
“In
this case we're dealing with someone much more powerful than my
father. The governor. He got angry with you and now you could be
ruined.”
“Why
are you telling me this? Your father will do what his daughter
wants.”
“I
am his bastard daughter. You know who my mother is. He is
sick with power. If anything disturbs this, he will kill you. He
will kill me.”
“Really,
I don't understand why I can't talk to my son.”
“If
you could talk to him never again are you to accuse him of lack of
courage when dealing with us,” Regina answered as she put on her
earrings.
“Courage?”
Alonso laughed briefly. “Because he's annoyed?”
“Because
you said that Florencia was planted to hurt us and that he couldn't
have won her. Think of what that does to his self-esteem. Give him
time. Let him recover. Give him a little break.”
“This
wouldn't have happened if there had been no investigation.”
“Hey,
I never imagined that it would end like this. Have you thought about
how I'm going to feel if what you told me is true?” She made a
sigh of frustration as she rose.
“I'm
sorry,” he said, getting up and taking her hands. “Forgive me.”
“This
isn't happening. It's been a long time that we have been together.
That we've been in agreement. I've been looking for a solution.”
“Well,
it's the pressure, the responsibility. It's not easy being in power,
you know that.”
She
nodded.
“Power.”
“Well,
yes.”
“But
what is this doing to our family? This power you believe we have
could be destroying us and also our son.”
She
walked away, leaving him with that thought.
Deborah
handed Cecelia a drink.
“That
might calm you down a bit.”
“Thanks.
You think I'm crazy. I don't think you know what I'm talking
about.”
“No.
I never can see this, but it's hard work to think that your father
could do this to his own daughter. Dear God. One who manages his
business.”
“He
manages badly.”
“Well,
neither is it your fault that Florencia was so dumb as to make that
sex video with the governor's son.”
“If
only we could have saved her life. They thought she was of no
importance. If only she hadn't made that video. That's so strange.
Where is it now?” She took a deep breath. “Talk about your
contacts. You are promiscuous. You decided to fool around with
others after you committed to being exclusive. I told since the
first day – ”
“I
know.”
“And
then?”
“I
swear, I swear that this nightmare is curable. I' was sure I was
alright. I –”
Cecelia
grabbed her shoulders and stared her down. She grabbed the back of
her head for a moment, exactly as Alonso had.
“I
told you, stupid. I told you, I told you! The cuckold's horns are
for boyfriends. I told you. You are to dedicate yourself to the
governor. That is what you do if you work for us. I told you this
–”
“Enough,
Cecelia, enough! You asked if I could help you. If you're going to
treat me like this, I'm out of here.”
She
headed toward the stairs but Cecelia grabbed her just as she passed.
“Let
go! Let go of me!”
Deborah
ran down the stairs with Cecelia close behind.
“No,
no, wait!” Cecelia shouted. “I'm trying to protect you. Why
don't you understand? You cheated on the governor and my father
doesn't know. Do you know what he will do? The same thing that
happened to Florencia.”
“What?
Are you insinuating he will order me killed?”
“No.
I don't know; I'm not sure.”
“No.
That won't happen to me. I'm with the governor. He loves me, he'll
protect me.”
“Why
are you so sure? How do you know?”
“He
sent me to his doctor to be cured so we could be together.”
“He
did that to get you out of the way. He will look for someone else.
As long as you work for my father you have to look out for yourself.
A slut with an infection.... now my sister will be infected, too.”
“Your
sister... your sister can help us.”
“My
sister doesn't know I exist. My father never allowed her any contact
with me. Understand that we are alone in this. What we have to do
is disappear. Go back to your apartment and I'll be there later.
Move it!”
She
pulled Deborah toward the door and she left.
Two
men in Mario's employ pulled up in their car as a news report came
over their radio. It said that two suspects in Florencia's murder
were seen at the airport looking to leave the country. The driver
turned it off, pitying the two suspects. The bald man in the shotgun
seat hushed him and called his attention to Deborah leaving Cecelia's
building. He spoke into a lapel microphone to Almiron to advise him
of their position. He was ordered to maintain surveillance over
Cecelia while the driver followed Deborah.
Regina
was preparing to go to bed. Alonso had spoken on the phone to Ochoa
who told him that they had a suspect. Regina commented about this
not coming from her people.
“It's
a guilty man who isn't guilty,” said Alonso.
“You
aren't sending an innocent man to prison?”
Alonso
laughed.
“This
guy isn't innocent. He's suspected of homicide and rape.”
“But
he didn't kill Florencia.”
“That
doesn't matter.”
“Doesn't
matter?”
“We
get two birds with one stone. We close the case and get these two
out of the country if they had good lawyers.”
Regina
stared. She could not believe this.
Mario
sat in his car in a wooded area. De Lucia entered on the passenger
side.
“Ochoa
is investigating for the governor,” he said.
“And?”
“He
discovered a security camera we missed.”
“What
did he discover?”
“Images
of one of my men following the girl. And others of the moment he
followed his orders. The images aren't sharp so they haven't
identified anyone but they are being processed. The problem is that
if they can make the images clear they will have proof of our
participation in this.”
“Our?”
Mario asked. “Yours. That was decided.”
“Sir,
you will remember that I work for your daughter, the senator.”
“This
cannot be happening.”
“I
will try to remove the images.” He reached for the door handle.
“No.
You won't try to explain anything. Do what you have to do but do it
NOW!”
“Yes,
Sir.”
He
exited the car and Mario drove away in the same manner as he had
concluded their previous meeting.
“The
real guilty man?”
“We'll
find him.”
“Well,
then wait until we get to the truth.”
“No.
No. Justice has its time-frame but they're not like the political
ones. It's not important.”
“It
is important.”
“No.
If it comes out that your security people are guilty we're finished.
You would have to resign from the senate and me from the governor's
seat.”
“I
can't believe what you're saying. It's like I don't even recognize
you. When did you change so much?”
“When
I realized that in politics the only rule is that there are no rules.
When someone plays dirty you have to play dirtier yet. You can't
let anyone destroy you.”
“But
that's reaching. Don't you realize that? Your intro isn't the same
and I'm going to tell you something. I will not allow an innocent
man to go to prison. And the investigation results show it I will do
whatever it takes to prove I had nothing to do with this. I will
confront the consequences as I must. As I believe, and you once
believed.”
“Don't
you realize I'm defending you? Of course I agree with you. Of
course we think the same. Of course we will fix this business
because in the end justice will be done.”
“But
it must be done fairly, as it is supposed to be.”
Alonso
was out-argued.
“Very
well. You're right. You win. Go on with it and I won't interfere.”
“Don't
try to talk circles around me.”
“Regina,
I need you. I need you to help protect all that's ours including our
son. Everything we've done together. Please, don't attack me
anymore. Help me, please. Without you I am nothing. I want to
recover my family. I want to make us back to what we were.”
“That
would please me. I don't want more conflict.”
“Very
well. I'll do more. I swear on my son.”
Regina
stared at him, not entirely convinced. She had been married to him
and been in politics long enough to know she needed to see proof.
Emiliano
somehow got out of the house without being seen. Getting off the
grounds would be another hurdle. He ducked behind hedges as security
men walked by. He took out his cell and called his friend Hugo,
asking him to meet him near his house. After ending the call he
climbed over the fence into the pool area, just missing his father,
who knocked on his bedroom door before entering. He leaped to the
deck area just after a security man ran by. He called Hugo again to
make sure he had gotten there, then headed in the right direction.
However, he had drawn the attention of the security men, who began
pursuing him.
The
casino boss looked at the check, satisfied. Gerardo, however,
demanded cooperation in exchange for this payment.
“You
and your people have taken advantage of my ex-wife's illness and her
gambling problem.”
“We
are not inclined to interfere with the desire of our clients who want
to pass their time in this way.”
“Well,
in order to get their money. In exchange you are to forbid my
ex-wife to enter the casino.”
“I'd
like to propose something more intense,” said the casino boss.
“I'd be willing to forgive this debt in exchange for your help and
influence. Someone is looking to authorize another casino in the
city. One hand washes the other.”
“I
will do you a favor. I will ignore this proposal and spare you
public humiliation. This is a serious crime. We'll leave this to
rest. You have been paid. Nothing that has happened here will come
to light. Nothing. Bad publicity doesn't suit anyone. Less for you
a second time in this city. Did you get that?”
“With
total clarity, Senator.”
“Excuse
me,” said Gerardo as he got up.
The
casino boss rose from his seat and extended his hand. Gerardo did
not take it. Without dropping his gaze he turned around and left the
office of a very disappointed casino boss.
Alonso,
Regina, and Noemi went down to the pool deck and Alonso was not
pleased with what happened. He told the security men not to call the
police. He didn't want any news of this to get out because he feared
a possible kidnapping. One of the men reported back that they had
lost Emiliano. Regina asked her mother whether she had heard
anything and Noemi looked as though she would panic.
Cecelia
packed a suitcase and tried to leave her apartment. The bald man who
had been dropped off earlier was right outside her door and would not
allow her to exit. She threatened to scream. He told her he had his
orders. No one was to enter and she was not to leave. He advised
her not to do something stupid that she would regret. He grabbed her
cell phone saying “You won't need this. The house phone also will
not work.”
She
took the suitcase back in and closed the door. She then leaned
against the doorframe and tried to remain calm.
Emiliano
was in Hugo's car. Hugo was trying not to drive too fast in order to
avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention. They didn't think they
were being followed. Hugo was also concerned about his parents
discovering his absence and getting upset with him. Emiliano didn't
know where he would hide.
“Did
you contact Deborah?” he asked.
“She
hasn't responded to my messages,” Hugo said. “I don't get the
internet on my cell phone and I am not going to talk to my parents.”
“Alright.
At least we're alive. Not like Florencia.” He paused a moment
“You have to talk to her. She has to know what happened to
Florencia.”
Gerardo
took Teresa home. She called out for Ximena once they were in the
door.
“Xime,
I'm back!” as though she were announcing something important.
“Hi, Xime! Xime...”
“Xime
isn't here and she isn't coming back,” Gerardo told her.
“Where
is she?”
“Escaping
your addiction.”
“What
addiction? I don't have an addiction. I went to a casino to play –”
“You
threw twenty thousand dollars into the garbage. You stole money from
your daughter. What is the matter with you? You're out of control.”
“You
are out of control,” she said. “You are my problem. If anything
happens to me it's your fault. Nothing else. You always put your
career ahead of me. Your politics, your profession, your ambition,
but I? Look at what you did to me.”
“I
put everything I could into this marriage, everything, Teresa. But
you drove me mad. You made me sick with your jealousies, your
depression, your sickness with your vices. But now it's over. We're
going to fix the only mistake I've ever made.”
“Only
mistake? What's the only mistake you've ever made? I want to know.”
“Leaving
my daughter to live with you. But that ends here. From now on she
lives with me.”
“You
can't do this.”
“I
can, and I will.” He started for the front door.
“If
you do I'll kill myself.”
Gerardo
turned around and approached her with his jaw set.
“Kill
yourself,” he said, looking her in the eyes. “Kill yourself. If
this is when you keep your promise, you're doing a big favor.”
He
turned around and left. Teresa watched him, disappointed that her
ploy had failed.
Hugo
and Emiliano stopped. Hugo got out to go to Deborah's apartment
door. They did not know that two other men in a car were waiting.
One called to update status, confirming the car and that they could
identify it from its license plates.
Mario
returned home to find Alonso in the driveway, smoking.
“It
looks like you have information about the dead girlfriend. I heard
that you found the killer.”
“You're
trying to get me to give information I can't, least of all to you.”
“I
can help you in something like this.”
“Ultimately
I don't know what to do. This is Emiliano's business. He treats me
as though I were an enemy.”
“You
know perfectly well you need me. It's logical that you're worried.
It's your son.”
“Yes,
it's my son. I don't know why he's like this. It's like he's going
mad.”
“I'm
in charge of Regina, but let me help you, too. Let me find the one
responsible for the girl's death.”
“Again
we talk about this. Your help or your daughter. It's a big favor.”
Alonso
walked back to the other end of the car to talk to the security team.
“Is
there anything new?”
Deborah
told Hugo that she knew nothing. He didn't believe her, as Florencia
had been her best friend. She kept denying she knew anything about
it and told him she was potentially in major trouble. She told him
that if he knew anything it would be dangerous and told him to go
away and forget it. She closed the door in his face.
Regina
and Noemi walked around the house, Noemi with a drink in her hand.
“I
thought you were united in this,” she said to her daughter.
“Mother,
it's a front. It's a lie.”
“Daughter,
you have to take care of your family.”
“I
have to take care of my son; you are right in that. Now my husband
has to take care of himself.”
“How?
No. Now you have to fight for your man and your marriage.”
“You
are talking as though we're in the last century. Now a woman's live
can't be reduced to just her marriage.”
“Do
you think the world has changed that much? If so you're the one
that's naïve. You think you control your life and you're
independent. Think what you want to but you're married to Alonso.
Believe me. They will always govern over us.
“You
may be right about some things but about me? Nobody will ever govern
me.”
She
left her mother alone in the room.
Hugo
went back to his car, telling Emiliano that Deborah knew nothing.
Both knew she was lying. Emiliano wanted to stay but they went back
into the car.
The
following morning Mauro and Pacheco talked about what should be
happening. Pacheco was certain that Regina needed to be at Alonso's
side for the press conference. They needed to appear united over
their missing son. Mauro did not agree. He insisted that Alonso had
to be in charge of the press. This was also in case anything came up
about the murder.
Alonso
had breakfast with Mario. Regina was in the room but not eating.
Noemi came downstairs and asked whether they had heard anything.
Regina told her they had not.
“At
least he isn't in jail,” she said.
They
were all tense as they went through the list of people and places
that Emiliano and Hugo should or could have been. There had been
nothing in the press thus far. Alonso got up, saying he hoped that no
questions would be raised at the press conference.
“Your
son is missing and you're worried about your image?” Regina asked
him.
“Fighting
now? Why don't you sit down and pretend nothing happened?”
“I
will do what I wish to do.”
Alonso
started to argue, but answered his ringing cell phone. As he did so
he walked out of the house. Mario got up from the table.
“Daughter,
don't press him. Now is not the time.”
“Now
is not the time? My son has disappeared. He could be in more
danger. He could be in the hands of Florencia's killers. Don't you
get that?”
She
went back inside.
Hugo
and Emiliano had camped out in front of Deborah's apartment and slept
sitting up in the car. They woke up just as Deborah came out with a
suitcase. Emiliano ran up to her but she did not want to talk to
him. He started asking questions and when she denied knowing
anything about Florencia's murder he would not believe her. She
tried dodging him but failed. Finally she saw one of the men who was
watching her and she ran. Emiliano ran back toward Hugo's car. Both
were grabbed by suited thugs and held at gunpoint.
