So, 50% flashbacks make it easy to write something.
Eliza is worried about Jennifer getting her deported or taking Rodrigo away from her. Andrés has a solution: marry him. Eliza says this is too great a sacrifice for him and, besides, she’s still legally married in Mexico. He suggests a visit to the consulate to see how she can divorce Max.
Carmen can’t raise Eliza nor Andrés on the phone.
Alejandra keeps watching Zombie Alo. Julián snarks about the princesa…papí show going on, wondering if his father bribed her with a car.
Paula is furious about Ale being at the lunch.
Max asks Jennifer if she has Margot's phone number. He tells her it's odd since Steve's ex hasn't been to the US in years. The nutcase goes into the laundry room and yells at the popsicle in the freezer to shut up and stop playing Für Elise in her head.
Don Carlos arrives with his…relative? If I’m not mistaken, they once called him a grandson and once a nephew. He’s an attractive young man who got his bachelor’s degree in business in Mexico and wants to study film in the US.
There’s a nasty scene with Frida and Tomás outside Marc’s house. He ends up telling her she sold her soul to the devil. Later she remembers a ton of flashbacks of what she did with Johnny and the “producer” and ends up crying in the shower.
Eliza and Andrés tell Santiago about what Raquel has done. He’s ready to cross the border. [I fear for little María’s intellectual gene pool; these two seem neither to rise to triple digit IQ’s.]
Speaking of selling one’s soul. Ernesto has a plan to get 30% of the “merchandise” into the US. [This whole thing makes NO sense to me.] But he won’t tell Carlos his clever plan until he’s guaranteed to be Secretary of ___________. [I listened over and over and could not tell what post he wants.
Paula sprays Alo again in the kitchen. Then she starts working on poisoning her mind against Alejandra, saying she’s trying to manipulate Alo because she wants to be around a powerful man. Margarita overhears this little brainwashing session.
Great job, novelera. Many thanks. Yes, the flashbacks did seem even more numerous in this episode than in the past. Oh well, as a recapper, perhaps that's reason for rejoicing. :-)
I have very little to add to your excellent account. One thing I noticed is that Ernesto again effusively thanks Paula for Alo's miraculous transformation, but then he simply kisses Paula on the cheek and leaves. And again, Paula clearly was hoping for more.
I found it interesting that when nutcase J-Low hears the Für Elise music, this time what she hears is not just what was on the ringtone but more of the actual piece itself. I don't think there's any particular significance in that, except it perhaps emphasizes the importance of the piece, which I'm more convinced than ever was chosen because of its title: For Elise (or Eliza).
One other thing is that Karina tells Eliza that she has nightmares every night about being deported. She tells her this not long after Andrés has urged Eliza to marry him in order to have citizenship. I wonder whether Karina's nightmares will push Eliza to think more positively about Andrés' proposal.
I think the post Ernesto tells Don Carlos that he wants is Secretary of Government, which makes no sense to me. The word he says is, I think, gobernación; as far as I know, that means government. There's a fairly lengthy discussion of this term (Secretaría de Gobernación) and what the English equivalent is on WordReference.com.
Juanita: Looks like we're getting a 2nd Season in all likelihood.
Novelera: Now that Magarita has overheard Paula turning Alondra against Sofia, how long before our sweet Magarita joins the Body Count ?
wow, thanks novelera!
yes, with the long run in of previous events and double previews at the end, I think we are getting less than half a show.
I think Ernesto was offering a way to get 30% "more" merc into the country (which is odd because with their last failure wouldn't it currently be none).
in exchange he wanted something, money? nope, and the english caps cracked your riddle, "Secretary of Governorship" is the Mexican Secretariat of the Interior.
Andreas, what a guy, he made it clear to Eliza that although he loved her he understood that she still loved Max, he also pointed out how he needed her to run the business, marriage really is the best choice. (what really jumps out is how Max has done nothing for this family)
I was getting the idea Paula was going to hook up Alo and the don Carlos grandson (or whatever), I wonder what kind of Julian he is?
speaking of which Karina has so far ignored all of Julian's calls.
hmm, wasn't Sofia playing with her phone when Don Carlos and Ernesto decided to talk outside (kind of rude that they kicked everyone out) and then put it in her purse (maybe with the recorder on) and left her purse there.
can we hope that Lorena is on a plane?
deb, I too saw Alejandra putting her phone in her bag and leaving it there. Like you, I suspect that she's left the recording mechanism on. I hope she hasn't left anything in the bag that might arouse suspicion (though I guess even just leaving the phone on "record" would arouse suspicion).
Since the novela is now in its last couple of weeks, I fear we can expect it to take some dark turns before the sun finally shines.
Juanita: I'm also expecting more dark & EVIL turns before this nightmare ends. Plus, why in the Hell did Sofia leave the cell phone in the bag ?
Plus, you know Pastrana is not finished making Good Job Hits yet.
I think it is a brilliant idea to show Jennifer's descent into madness with this haunting music. It's just about the only brilliant idea the writers of this mess had.
It was refreshing not to have to suffer through another bout of Joel's stupidity. I suppose he was busy taking Lorena to the airport. I really hope I am wrong though, because Lorena deserves a much heavier punishment than losing Joel (which is a gift, not a punishment).
I can't stand Frida's storyline. If the writers are trying to make us sympathize with her, it's not working (for me, at least). It's not as if she had a terrible dilemma, a Sophie's choice of either sleeping with some creep or watching her children go hungry. She just wanted the fame and fortune and was ready to sell herself for it.
I know a lot of people might disagree and maybe even argument that Jonny sexually assaulted her. But that would be a disservice to real sexual assaults suffered by women everywhere and by women in the entertainment industry in particular.
Frida wasn't forced to do anything, she wasn't drugged and she wasn't blackmailed. Jonny is a creep, but she agreed to pay for his services in sex. She could have said no. Most of the women would rather keep singing in the bathroom and working in a decent but unglamorous job than pleasure the Jonnys of the world to advance a singing career.
I don't have a drop of sympathy for her and totally agree with what Thomas said to her, although he is a hypocrite too. He also had a choice, an unpleasant one but a choice nonetheless. He could have informed the police about the whole drugging of young girls to rape them scheme because it is just too horrible to ignore. Yes, he maybe would have been incarcerated or deported, but surely it's better than being complicit in dozens of rapes? Maybe the police would have even given him immunity in exchange of working with them to get 66 off the streets.
In any case, I still don't understand what debt is Thomas repaying to 66. Wasn't it Benny that robbed him? And why Thomas still hangs out with Benny, who is both responsible for his nightmarish situation regarding 66 and tried to kill his father?
Irene
Irene, the whole Tomás owing anything to 66 has been ridiculous from jump street. The sequence is that Benny brought the money he got from selling drugs to Tomás, asking him to keep it overnight because he had snoopy family members who might find it and ask questions. Benny got into this mess because his father was picked up by ICE, and he wanted money for an attorney.
Apparently the very next day 66 and the guys grabbed up Benny, thinking he was trying to keep the money. Benny called him, and Tomás came to the gang house with the money to rescue Benny.
66 took one look at the clean-cut, untattooed Tomás and shrewdly decided he'd be a good candidate to deliver drugs in Hollywood and other tony neighborhoods. 66 illogically said that Tomás owed the whole debt, even though he brought all the money to him. Tomás wouldn't have gone along, except that the thug threatened Eliza, Karina, and Rodrigo. At some point, IIRC, a per delivery sum was agreed upon. And, after T made this number of deliveries, he'd be free.
Irene: I noticed that Raquel will be stuck in the hot 18-Wheeler with the other illegal immigrants.
I hope Benny DIES.
On Margarita: if Paula discovers that the Mag-ista is onto her manipulations, I'm afraid we might be saying RIP to the Mag-ista tonight!
Novelera: I want that BIGLY anvil to hit Frida so hard, her boring singing will NEVER be heard from again. Every expletive time I hear that song, I press the Fast Forward button.
On Tomas: I see prison in his future & likely deportation. I mean ICE or some law enforcement agency is bound to bust him & 66 sooner or later. Plus, that so-called friend, Benny will not be long for this world.
Novelera, I totally agree that this Thomas owing to 66 is ridiculous.
I hate this pandilla storyline so damn much. If 66 makes Thomas pay the debt that he doesn't own, how can he be sure that after the "debt" is repaid 66 is going to let him go? I would say the chance of Tomas getting rid of 66 by paying the debt is 0, so why not collaborate with law enforcement? Otherwise, he is just going to be 66's slave for the rest of his life.
Irene
YES... NO JOEL.. THANKYOU
YES.. TEAM ANDRES.. SEXI POPI CHULO!!!
YES.. SOFIA.. YOU ARE one smart cookie..
yes... paula.. go screw the young boy...film what porno.. is Carlos his lover???

WHAT DISNEY /FAIRY TALE LAND [even for a soap] do people live in.. this is the BARRIO/GHETTO... There ain't- NO- GOING- TO- THE- COPS.[ snitches -wear-stitches..if the cops don't shake you down or deport you... or kill you first]....
Tomas could have gotten help from Max???[ what am I saying..!!}…
Max is the only one ….not in the hood, that could have had leverage.. and steve as well, they have enough distance.. and social immunity.. but that ship has sailed...
Too many GD corners boys have their eyes on you.. watching you ..so you walk- the- walk or be dead.. or your family be dead!!!
Excuse me but, this is the barrio.ghetto, ... can"t go to the PO_PO... cause the mi5/66 will kill your whole family...!!

JUNIO..SIN SUENOS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GRACIAS SENOR~~~!!! MUCHO TU JOLI!! ABOUT DAMN TIME!!
Halimacandy, I agree with your post that Tomás can't really go to the police.
I had a friend whose mother lived in the barrio in San Francisco. Either the norteños or the sureños gang ran a certain part of the Mission District where she lived. Each person who lived there knew which gang was in charge, even if they themselves had no family member who belonged to a gang.
And the residents knew exactly which street was the end of that gang's "territory". And my friend, a man who lived in the suburbs about 30 miles away from where his mother lived, would tell me that these guys knew exactly who everyone was and everything about them. His mother was never in danger because she had no family members involved, and they tended to leave old ladies alone.
Don’t recall when but Tomás has already tried to leave 66 telling him he paid in full. Of course 66 would not let him go.
I guess because Eliza is through with Max but loves him and does not want to harm him...she doesn’t play the obvious card...that she is his legal wife and he is a us citizen therefore her status should be different. I know ..I know..this whole story line of who’s really the wife is stupid and she should be able to verify her marriage...but this is TN land.
I think all the flash backs is to buy time so the can can add another unworthy season. I was hoping they didn’t go there but IpI fear they might. This TN is not strong enuf or worthy of a second season..but oh well.
Does Alo not feel the spritz in her face...this drugging thing and the manner it’s being carried out is ridiculous
Kind od lost interest in the Lorena and Joel story..no way should she still be in LA or in his life after what she did...come on. Find a better excuse to keep her around other than Joel asking her to stay
Nett
Juanita: RIP Raquel.
Nett: Alondra still brainwashed & will get more EVIL.
Irene: Joel, Andres & Santiago arrive too late as the driver left the immigrants inside the 18-Wheeler.
HALIMACANDY: Don Carlos about to blow Sofia's cover.
I'm totally awake now after having rolled off my bed when I read Novelera's whitty:
"The nutcase goes into the laundry room and yells at the popsicle in the freezer to shut up and stop playing Für Elise in her head.". I guess they are leaving him in the freezer to be found at some later date, thus exposing J-Low.
At this point the recaps are more entertaining than the episodes. Particularly, Alondra's 'Stepford child' act.
I'm sick of almost everything in this novela except waiting for Paula's and Ernesto's anvils hitting them and the true Galán, Andrés, having receiving his reward for heroism.
Where is the meat to continue this stupidity into a second season.
It seems as if the producers and writers are giving up their cashcow earnings in telenovelas.
What was the last truly authentic, page turning, telenovela-land believable, and and we'll acted Telenovela? Please vote!
We're again confronted with far too many flashbacks. I'll deal with most of them the way I did before: [MF].
OK, so as usual we start with flashbacks, but instead of just one or two, we get 5 or 6. [MF]. The actual episode begins in the truck carrying Raquel and others to Los Angeles. Raquel is chatting with Jessie, the young woman who's looking forward to celebrating her 15th birthday (quinceañera) with her father in the United States. They both are very happy, which is a sure sign that something bad will soon happen.
The driver of the truck carrying Raquel and the others receives a warning that the immigration police (ICE) are running a surprise operation nearby. He's told he should run. He says to himself (in English), "Those bastards. They won't get me this time." He stops the truck, gets out, and starts to unlock the back. Raquel and the others are delighted, thinking he's about let them out. Alas, he hears a helicopter hovering overhead, so instead of completing the unlockiing, he simply runs away.
Carmen and Andrés have come to the wall to look for the coyote who had offered to help Carmen and Raquel cross the border a few days earlier. Carmen spots him, he runs, Andrés chases after him and tackles him. The coyote claims they've got the wrong guy, but Carmen finds a medal belonging to her in his possession. She apparently also gets hold of his driver's license and so knows his name. He then tells them what he knows, namely, that he just makes the deal, other people take the people across the border. Raquel and the others have left to make the crossing in a truck.
Meanwhile, the people locked in the truck begin to panic. To my astonishment, Raquel develops a new personality, forcefully calming everyone down and urging them to sit quietly and conserve their energy. She also calls Santiago. She tells him that the driver has abandoned them, it's very hot in the truck, and it's hard to breathe. Santiago instructs her on how to use the phone to find and send her location to him. She follows his instructions but then the connection breaks and she can't get it back. Santiago tries unsuccessfully to reach her on his phone.
Ernesto and Don Carlos finish talking business and go inside. Don Carlos brings Alejandra the bag she left on her chair and urges her to be more careful with it in the future. Someone could snoop and discover her secrets. She responds, "You and Ernesto are gentlemen and wouldn't do such a thing," but she also tells him she'll take his advice. She leaves and takes out her phone to see what she managed to record but before she can listen, she gets an urgent message from Eliza explaining the situation with Raquel and asking about her contact in the police (i.e., Joel). Alejandra then sends a message to Joel.
Rodrigo is worried. Raquel has no water and no air. He fears she's going to die. Eliza tries to reassure him that that's not going to happen.
Tomás thinks about Frida. [MF] As he walks down the street, he's grabbed by 66, who is enraged that Tom has created a disturbance at the home of 66's best client. Tomás tells him, "I realize that the only thing one can do in this town is sell one's soul to the devil. You were right, bro. How much do you pay for mine?"
Carmen is upset and doesn't want Karina to make things worse by expressing her fears. She wants Karina to help her. Karina says if she knew how to help her, she would. Carmen suggests that they pray, say the "Our Father" together. Carmen begins, but Karina doesn't join in. Carmen is dismayed that Karina has forgotten the words.
Alejandra and Eliza talk. Alejandra tries to reassure Eliza that there's all kinds of technology that will help them find Raquel. Eliza says that even so, crossing the frontier can be perilous, as Alejandra knows. [MF] They then talk about Alondra. Alejandra is very puzzled and upset with the way Alo has changed. "Yes, I ate with Alo, but she wasn't Alo.[MF] Somehow, they've brainwashed her. I have to rescue her."
We see Alo alone in her room. She remembers Paula's words. [MF] She then looks at the photo of herself lying on her mother's tombstone.
Paula asks Ernesto how his conversation with Don Carlos went. Has he agreed to support Ernesto? A rather annoyed Ernesto replies, "First, I have to prove to him that I'm a leader. After all these years." Paula advises him to give Don Carlos what he wants in terms of the business. Ernesto says he plans to do so. This discussion is interrupted by a phone call about the people discovered in the truck. Ernesto asks to be kept informed.
Alejandra and Eliza are still talking about Alo. Alejandra says they had been so close, but now Alo treats her as if she were a stranger. [MF] Alejandra wonders how they could manipulate Alo. Eliza and she agree that that's not an easy task. Eliza wishes that there were some ally inside the house. Alejandra thinks of Margarita. [MF]
Joel is driving with Andrés and Santiago in search of the truck carrying Raquel and the others. He talks on the phone to Richard, who tells him that the FBI doesn't know exactly where the truck is, they need more time. Joel responds, "Time is what we don't have."
Inside the truck, a weakened Raquel tries to get Jessie to keep talking, not to lose consciousness. But Raquel herself is beginning to fade out.
Paula tells Ernesto that there are probably no survivors. She sees this incident simply as an opportunity for Ernesto to impress people. She suggests he take off his tie and look less formal. She worries about his appearance, but Ernesto assures her that his strength is in the honesty of his words. [Uh...right]
Margarita is puzzled by Alo's sudden liking for the kinds of clothing Paula has given her. She asks Alo about whether she's still having headaches. "No," replies Alo, "I feel better than ever." Margarita asks her about the photo on her dresser of Alo at Sofía's tomb. Alo claims to know nothing about it.
Margarita sees Julián and asks, "Remember when you asked about your mother? [MF] The conversation gets derailed when Alo and Paula appear.
Eliza continues to worry. [MF] Carmen tells her all will be well.
Joel, Andrés, and Santiago find the truck. Joel shoots the lock to open the back of the truck just as police sirens are heard in the background. The three men quickly move all the cartons blocking the hidden compartment and open it. Santiago sees everyone unconscious, and he assumes they are dead. They may very well be dead, but I was surprised that he didn't rush in to go to Raquel and try to revive her. Apparently there was no time to do so before the episode ended.
Juanita, you lost me on the MF.
I guess that tells you I'm not of the pre-texting generation!
Thanks for posting. Your recaps are a delight to read and this nightowl, not early bird, is very thankful.
Does anyone know how many episodes are left? The channel I'm watching this on already says "capítulos finales"?
Just once I'd love to watch a teleovela that doesn't have bad guys!
What happened to Raquel was hard to watch and I am so distraught I couldn't sleep.
I keep hoping that somehow Raquel is going to be revived by telenovela magic in tonight's episode, although with the amount of foreshadowing of her death throughout the telenovela it's highly unlikely she is alive.
Poor Santiago, I don't think one can recover from such tragedy!
It's all Julian's fault and I am going to be terribly disappointed if he is not paying for his crimes with jail time.
Finally, Joel is acting like a professional that he supposedly is.
Novelera's idea about 66 dying and thus freeing Thomas seemed logical, but now I have no idea where this storyline is going. Will Thomas join the gang just like Benny did? And why would he want to do this? He always abhorred anything to do with the gang, so why the sudden change of heart?
I understand Novelera's and Halimacandy's point of view about the difficulty of getting away from the gang, but becoming a gangster is so much worse than going to the police or just leaving the neighborhood.66 is a puny neighborhood gangster, he doesn't have national reach and view how Andres was able to put him in his place without suffering any consequences he is not that tough.
Irene
Juanita: Good Job on the recap.
Irene: Looks like we're getting a 2nd Season at some point. Besides I do NOT see Julian getting his Karma anytime soon!
You might as well give up on Alondra. She's a lost cause!
HALIMACANDY: Don Carlos will blow Sofia's cover. I believe he took her stuff & will tell Paula & Ernesto.
Victoria: Mag-ista (Margarita) might NOT make it alive if Paula discovers the Mag-ista is catching onto what's going on with Alondra.
Televisa announced that Lado will have a second season. And the gossip is, if one has any faith in Hollywood rags, that two stars, haven't signed their contracts yet.
Victoria, in my previous recap, I explained that rather than deal with the seemingly endless flashbacks, I would just indicate them by [MF], standing for More Flashbacks. (What? That wasn't your first assumption? :-) )
Re a second season, I'm very disappointed that they're planning this. They barely have enough content for season one! (Hence all the filler flashbacks.) Where did you see the announcement? And am I right that when you wrote "Televisa," you meant "Telemundo"?
Irene, thanks very much for your appreciative and interesting comments.
One thing I had intended to mention but inadvertently left out was Paula's spraying Alo in the face and telling her it was perfume. Does one spray perfume in someone's nose and eyes? I doubt it, and I wish Alo would doubt it as well. But good grief, is the drug Paula is using perfumed? She asks Alo whether she likes the perfume smell.
thanks so much Juanita, for another wonderful recap!
I too loved how Raquel took charge with her calming affect, sign of a true and great mother, I am so hoping she survives, I guess Santiago didn't feel my slap to the back of the head when I was yelling at him to get in there.
Andreas, Carmen, and Santi riding around in the car reminded be of one of the old movie scenes where they sit there and the background is rolled by, but wait, now Joel is with them and driving the car.
so far Beto has been a gentleman.
why doesn't Sofia send Richard the recording, will anyone get to hear it the way they are toying with us?
Juanita,
MF that's so funny! Not at all what I thought!
I read about the second season for LADO on Wiki:
"On 10 May 2018, Univision revealed through its upfront for the 2018-19 television season that the series renewed for a second season."
I did mean Telemundo. My phone just thinks I only watch Televisa Or YouTube.
Thanks, Victoria, for your prompt reply. I tried tracking down the sentence you quoted and found it in Variety. But though the article had a good deal of info about Telemundo's plans, I saw no mention of Lado. Here's what the article said about Telemundo's plans for the next year:
****
Meanwhile, Telemundo is planning a reboot of “Ugly Betty,” “Betty in NY,” and launching new premium series “The Inmate” and “Falco.” The move dovetails with the company’s mandate to innovate, bring new genres to the table and expand its offering, said Luis Silberwasser, president of Telemundo Networks.
Other highlights of its upcoming programming include “La Voz,” a Spanish-language version of NBC’s hit music competition, “The Voice” with Luis Fonsi of “Despacito” fame to serve as its coach. Co-produced by Telemundo and Talpa, it has been taped at Telemundo’s new state-of-the-art Telemundo Center in Florida.
Set to be a game changer is Telemundo’s upcoming exclusive Spanish-language coverage of the FIFA World Cup in Moscow this summer (June 14-July 15). The company is deploying 500 employees to cover the event in Russia. The sports event held every four years was a ratings juggernaut for Univision, which lost its broadcasting rights to the soccer tourney to Telemundo.
Telemundo is also launching a new season of its worldwide hit series “La Reina del Sur 2 “(“The Queen of the South 2”) with actress Kate del Castillo reprising her role as drug trafficking queen, Teresa Mendoza.
The company has also announced a new pact with Hulu that will bring 3,000 hours of Telemundo programming to the streaming service.
Telemundo will hold its upfront in conjunction with NBCUniversal’s company-wide programming presentation on Monday at Radio City Music Hall. Telemundo will also host an evening event for advertising clients and business partners at the Park Avenue Armory Conservancy in New York City, featuring a private concert with global Reggaeton star J Balvin.

I tried finding information elsewhere, but it was pretty much the same as what was in the Variety article. I confess that I'm hoping you're mistaken about a second season for Lado, for the reasons I've already explained. Do you have a URL for what you found?
Juanita
OMG, I'm so embarrassed. I'm watching too many novelas at one time. I'm so mixed up. I confused Lado with another one I'm watching.
Please forgive.
I really appreciate your taking the time to give us a rundown of what's happening in telenovela-land.
By the way, where is Stevie these days?
Victoria,
Don't be embarrassed. It could just as easily have been me passing over what was right before my eyes. And I'm delighted to know that it wasn't Lado that was slated for a season 2.
Juanita: Where is Richard ? Could he or Patrick be a spy for Paula & Ernesto ?
I mean let's be honest: we've already seen the dirty & corrupt Los Angeles County DA taking bribes from Paula to get the late Raquel Suarez deported.
I seriously doubt there will be a second season. I like Lado more than some of the rest of you, possibly because I took a long break from watching any at all and the plot does interest me, not all of it. I like the Eliza story line. Litzy is really good in this. I like Carmen. And I could watch Gabriel Porras paint a wall. I had never seen Marjorie before, and think she's good. The blonde hair/wig is distracting, but oh well. Paula is a terrific villain.
Like many of you I could do without Frida and 66.
I don't think Raquel is alive. This was a pretty harsh message to viewers what happens when you do business with a coyote. To amplify this, one of my classmates in my long-term Spanish class was working with the immigrant community. This was about 10 years ago. At that time, it was pretty straightforward. You paid them, at that time, around $3,000 and they got you to the other side safely. Since then the "business" has mostly been taken over by the cartels. These people have zero humanity. They rape and rob the people who have already paid them. If there's a hint of something going wrong, they leave them to die in a truck where it is 120 degrees inside.
The main reason I don't think there will be another season is that they only seem to do that with narconovelas, which they call Super Series, a rather inflated description of them.
I'm pretty confident that they will tie up all the loose ends in the next couple of weeks.
NOVERLERA:
THANKS ...
YES! YES!!...TEAM TOMAS!! [FOR ME] ALL THE WAY.. DUDE ,DONT let a broken heart break you!!
yes.. I can watch Gabriel.. all day long..this role..OMG!! he is working this self centered bastard all the way!!!
Juanita:
for goodness sakes!! hell no !!!.. lets wrap this up!!!!!!!!!!!
Lado people... we are in the home stretch...please!! hang in there...
Unfortunately, nowadays there is a trend of planning second seasons even for the traditional telenovelas. They did it to La Piloto, Mi marido tiene familia, La doble vida de Estella Carillo (although it seems that they will not go forward with it) and now they plan to have second season of Por Amar sin Ley, so we can't be certain that Lado won't have another season just because it's not a narconovela, but I sure do hope the writers will realize that they don't have enough material for another 70 episodes.
I have ambivalent feelings about this telenovela.
On the one hand, I really liked the suspense at the beginning and sometimes they do surprise us with interesting plot developments. I do like the characters of Sophia, Carmen and Andres. I like good villains in telenovelas and we do get a lot of good villainy here with Paula, Jennifer and Ernesto. Also, they did a good job of showing the plight of illegal immigrants, especially through a very relatable Raquel (I confess that I cried like a baby during the imaginary quinceanera party segment as Raquel and Jessy laid dying at the back of that truck).
On the other hand, both galanes are simply the worst and dumbest I ever saw in any telenovela and I can't stand them. They are what I would call anti-galanes and it's difficult to really enjoy the telenovela when you have not a single couple(apart from Santiago and poor Raquel) to root for.
And then they keep developing those unnecessary storylines of 66 and Frida, instead of concentrating on what's really important- the human trafficking. There could have been so many interesting storylines involving the use of Ernesto's status as a Consul to facilitate human trafficking, but instead we were treated to daily torture of millions of unnecessary flashbacks and Frida and her ridiculous song on repeat.
Irene
And Frida's stupid song is one of those songs that stays in your head all-day long.
The only reason why I think this might go into a second season, is because I watch it on the Telemundo App, and it is listed as a "Series" and not a "Novela".
I can see that PASL could go in the way of Law and Order. But really????
Victoria: Frida's expletive song is driving everybody including myself crazy. Like I mentioned to everyone on here, it's looking like we're getting a 2nd Season because there are lots of loose ends, loopholes & storylines, which need to get more in-depth.
Plus, I noticed that Jennifer had the freezer chained up with Steven's decomposing body in there. I mean at some point, it's going to start to smell badly.
HALIMACANDY: I felt horrible for Santiago losing his wife, Raquel like that, but she was WARNED multiple times by Carmen not to trust Coyotes like what's his face.
Novelera: Marjorie de Sousa was in Univision's "Hasta El Fin Del Mundo".
Irene: I noticed that Don Carlos' nephew is dating Alondra. Who is he & what's his angle in all of this ?
HALIMANCANDY: Ernesto is not on the level of BPN from "EL SENOR DE LOS CIELOS" in terms of most evil politico.
I'm wondering if Margarita (AKA the Mag-ista) will make it to the Gran Final.
Belated thanks, deb, for your insightful comments. With both you and me yelling at Santiago, how could he not have heard us? :-)
I think Richard has been pressing Sofía to send or bring in the recording, and I think she wants to do so. So it probably won't happen. :-) Just kidding. I do think it will finally get to Richard.
exciting but short!
according to Gregorio Pernía (El Titi), it will only run about 40 episodes. (People en Espanol)
begins Tuesday, 12 june 18, 9 eastern.
Tomas decides to join the devils thinking his deliveries are enough, nope, 66 hands him a gun, brings up his hate for his dad.
Rod wants to skip school to hear what happens, nope Carmen ushers him and Karina out the door.
Charlie has a doctors appointment, Max wants Jen to see him too, nope, she has a headache, his phone rings, we hear his ring tone, Jen hears Steve's, her eyes bug out, when did you change your ring tone she asks, what? Max and Charlie are confused.
Ernesto, or is it Johnny on the spot, brings down the house at a press conference on the 5 dead migrants, the 3 survivors are in the hospital, Paula and Carlos are watching on tv, they smile at his performance.
Paula talks of Ernesto's charisma, Carlos talks of his ability to spin things to his advantage, Paula starts hyping "their" plan, Carlos says he can read a graph, pssst, (I guess he doesn't need a woman to explain things).
Ernesto takes a guy to identify one of the 5 victims, it's Jessie, and that's her dad.
Joel breaks down remembering the sight in the truck, Santiago's anguish, it was like finding a needle in a hay stack he mourns, Sofia, who brought Richard the recording, comforts him.
Santiago comes in to Raquel's room, she is alive, (YIPPEE!!), he avoids all the details, Maria is fine, Jessie...not so.
Jen has a chat with freezer Steve, tells him to chill, she says he never was a good brother and you aren't now but I need your help, talks of taking him to the river they used to go to, but for now, stay here, (does she pull out a cell phone?)
Joel and Rich listen to Sofia's recording and get a handle on Mexican politics, yep, Carlos is the hand that rocks the cradle, what do we do now, hmm, tell the Mexican authorities, or tell the press, but wait, there may be more people involved, Joel spits out, that's why we need to leave Sofia at the Consulate, Rich says, but the way Ernesto harasses her, Joel worries, (or maybe the part where Ernesto wants to marry her)
Paula tells Carlos how she is Ernesto's right hand, he asks about Alejandra, he's impressed how she has broken him out of his alcoholism and got him back, but she is dangerous Paula adds, hmm, that reminds him why women are best left out of politics and business.
(Paula probably wishes she took Cummings offer to work for him, way back when)
Fri is flashing on Tomas, when Johnny appears, good news her video has more hits than the los 40 de Linares, dumping your boyfriend was the best thing you could have done, he adds, although the perv misses sneak peeks of their budding romance, oh and the good news is you have an interview with TVZone Latino, bad news is I'll do the talking.
Ernesto smooths his way into Raquel's hospital room, Eliza cooly slides out of view, (Trejo rolls the camera and the show is on) he says he will take care of everything, and when she is discharged?, not to worry, something about a humanitarian parole, where your human rights were violated, Ernesto is certain they can get her a green card, but his head almost spun around when Raquel mentioned she was from El Salvador, ah, but smooth Ernesto didn't miss more than a beat, he'll take care of it, but don't mention to anyone that you are from El Salvador, ok?
Sofia swings by the mansion, no, Alo isn't here, Sofia will wait, you are always welcome here Margarita says, hmm, she looks like she has something to say about Alo, but won't.
the devils are outside of Max's place, 66 wants Tomas to rob it, bring me more than $10,000 in merc if you want to be a devil, oops Jen is leaving, they all duck, Tomas wants to know what to do if someone comes, 66 says kill them, but that's my family, in this business it's kill or be killed, walk into that house and steal all you can and kill whoever gets in your way, well, are you going to make them pay, or will we? Tomas flashes back at Fri and Max, he's in, gun, gloves, hoody and later a mask.
Julian meets Karina at school, she doesn't want to talk, he insists, it wasn't his fault, he just gave Vanessa something to relax, Karina really rips into him with a speech about how guys give girls drugs, just to relax, a toy to play with, and when it breaks, next...do you know how many women die because of men who think like you...what should I do, Julian asks, turn myself in, yes Karina says, but you are a coward, I didn't kill her he says, I gave her the pill but she took it because she wanted to, Julian wants to be forgiven, nope (as in never).
as Tomas creeps around Max's house (I yell for him to check the freezer) he comes across a family pic Jen/Charlie/Max, he remembers Max when he was a kid, and the bus station where there was no Max, wait, Max and Charlie are home, Tomas grabs his loot and hides, good, Max is off to work, Charlie runs to his room, Tomas looks for a way out, Charlie hears the noise, they meet in the hallway...
Deb: I see that Raquel survived, but I noticed the Body Languages of Eliza, Andres & Santiago when Ernesto showed up.
Meanwhile, I see that 66 pushes Tomas into a corner. I wasn't surprised that he was robbing DEADBEAT Max's house, but was disturbed when Charles ran to the hallway.
Ernesto needs a Best Actor Award for the Oscars for "Best Performance of a Hypocritical Politico" since Paula & Don Carlos have bigger plans: making Ernesto President of the United Mexican States.
HALIMACANDY: Ritula arrives in Colombia & has no clue Super Javi is alive & well, making out with Kashi.
Daddy Casilas & the Venezuelan Female Colonel have arrived in Turkey. Now the Turkish are getting into the act.
What a superb recap, deb! Many thanks! There were so many bits that I especially enjoyed. To cite just a few, "Jen has a chat with freezer Steve," "(I yell for him to check the freezer)," your concise account of Tommy's good news/bad news, and "Carlos is the hand that rocks the cradle" [given what the "business" is, your wording is wonderfully chosen and bitterly ironic].
And what's going on with that cell phone that J-Low pulls from the freezer with much effort? Didn't she smash Steve's cell phone to pieces in an earlier episode?
I was very pleased but also puzzled about Raquel's surviving. I thought there were only 5 or at most 6 people in the truck, but the news accounts claimed there were 5 dead and 3 survivors. Huh??
I was yet again impressed with Gabriel Porras' performance. Johnny on the spot indeed!
deb, I doubt that the translator recognized how delightfully ironic the wording was. I really enjoyed it.
Could you remind me how you get the English captions? Did you set your TV to do that? I remember years ago I could choose, but I thought that choice was no longer available for the Telemundo novelas. The only English captions I know about now are the ones available for the 15-minute segment you once mentioned as being available on YouTube. I plan to stick with the Spanish captions, but I'd like to know where in a pinch I could find them in English for more than the first 15 minutes.
Deb, you rock! That was such a terrific and witty recap. Your asides are golden.
I also loved “chat with Freezer Steve”. And I echo the ¿Qué? as regards the second cell phone fished out of the freezer. Steve didn’t strike me as the kind to carry two; i.e., nothing sinister going on in his life that we’ve seen. Did the writers forget the hammer scene?
I was so incensed at 66 insisting that Tomás have his gang initiation be a robbery of his father’s house, including carrying a gun to put any inhabitants at risk. Tomás is being a complete idiot. His despecho (the best word is in Spanish) (spite, cutting off his nose to spite his face) could have horrible consequences. I am NOT liking this part of the plot, although I suppose it could be a PSA to keep young guys out of gangs.
Well, color me surprised. It surely looked like Raquel was dead. They even made her face look dark.
I wish I knew the legality of what Ernesto is doing re the survivors from the abandoned truck. When in the consulate, he is on Mexican soil. But I don’t see how he could prevent ICE from showing up at the hospital and grabbing up Raquel for illegally crossing the border. And, as I understand it from working with immigrants, if you are deported and return, the second crossing becomes a felony. More Telenovela Justice?
Margarita’s keeping her trap shut about the similarities between Alondra’s having been ill before and that of Claudia, Ernesto’s first wife, is driving me crazy.
Again, I hate what Tomás is doing and how he’s behaving. But I don’t really want he and Frida to end up together at the end. She’s lost any right to a happy ending with the guy she loves. And, there has been speculation about none of the characters ending up in love and happy. This could be the twist to the novela’s end.
I LOVED the sour look on Paula’s face when she tried to throw Ale/Sofi under the bus and was rewarded by Don Carlos giving said Ale/Sofi credit for pulling Ernesto out of the alcoholic ditch.
Juanita, hmm, I once told a neighbor of mine how to get CC3 and she had to get the cable guy to show up and straighten everything out.
basically you have to go into your TV settings (usually in a category called set-up) and look for something called "captions" which gives you the option of turning captions on/off as well as what kind, normal TV is CC1 (or default), you want CC3 for english on Telemundo.
(interesting but CC3 on NBC will sometimes give you spanish captions, depending on the show, like the "Tonight Show w/ Jimmy F")
now you need to remember what you change because you will have to change it back afterwards, because most shows don't have CC3 so you won't see any captions.
if you don't change anything you can always just exit.
this can also be done in like a DVR or where ever the signal originates, but it's simplest to just do it with the TV till you figure it out. If you are going to play with it during the day, some Telemundo programs don't use CC3 so you will get nothing.
thanks novelera!
I was actually struggling with this recap because I didn't feel I could do justice with the magnificent speech Karina gave Julian which left him and me with our mouths open, nor with the way Ernesto shines when he turns on the charm.
yep, Tomas is a dummy, how much so?, just turn around and look at that other dummy Benny slinking down in the back seat, 66 has a way about him, turning the whole thing into payback.
I'm so happy Raquel made it, nice teamwork, Eliza sliding out of the room while Andreas was blocking Ernesto's view, I'm wondering if the publicity will put the spotlight on her accident, and yes, ICE seems to be an independent bureaucracy that makes up it's own rules, something I have never liked.
and Margarita is bubbling with things to say if only Sofia can find a crack in that wall.
deb, thanks VERY much for the info about English captions. I'm very happy to know that it's again possible to get English captions for the novelas by setting the TV to CC3. That used to be true years ago, but then the English captions stopped being available that way. I guess Telemundo recognized they'd have a larger audience if they again made English captions available.
It seems, perhaps, that they are trying to wind everything down with such a light, airhead story to take to the end (hopefully).
Why is Tomás joining the gang? Just because Frida dumped him? What a cliff dropper this is. We have Karina preaching the line "just say no, drugs are evil"..., her own brother now a gangster, drug seller, and possibly a killer. Then we still have stupid, spoiled Julian trying, almost, to get his nightmares out of his head. He does seem redeemable to me here. But never Paula.
Who knows, maybe Julian will be the one to put Ernesto and Paula away,?
I thought the Carlos' macho thing with Paula confirmed my belief that many Latinos, particularly the older men, still have their 'old boys club's.
But Paula's reaction to Carlos was a joy to see!!
Steve,
Is your body count increasing? Jennifer, Margarita, Tomás (you hit that one right on).
TEAM TOMAS..I AM WORRIED FOR MY BOY!!!..DUDE.. YOU ARE AT THE CROSS ROADS....
YOU HAVE TO HUSLTE CHARLIE AND TRY TO SWEET TALK HIM...
MAX MAY HAVE TO step up to the plate and help his son???
OMG..WHAT THE HACK AM I SAYING??
POOR TOMAS..you may be going down and taking a fall for this..66/SOPRANO M.O... set up with a PASTY is CLASSIC....
HALIMACANDY: I do NOT feel any sympathy for Tomas. If he goes to prison for 60 years, so be it.
Victoria: I'm betting the Mag-ista (Margarita) might NOT make it alive if Paula sees her as a threat to exposing all of the dirty little secrets.
But who would cook the food ?
