From Friday: Isabel is very feisty and brave with Joselito; but she doesn’t know that he knows exactly who she is. Diego tells Isabel that Mateo is allied with the Gaona Cartel. Amanda tells Porfi that her mother and Diego and fleeing from the police. Joselito gives it his best shot at convincing Disgusto that Circe killed Eliseo, but Circe doesn’t flinch and toughs it out.
Gabriela is quite the metiche, telling Isabel that Deivid is a narco. And because Deivid is a criminal, what does that make Emiliano? She even tells Isa that Deivid helped some other guys beat up Jim.
Porfirio, hearing from Amanda about Eliseo giving out false passports, says the supposedly honest Eliseo was corrupt and trying to save his brother. Amanda: “Diego is a un delincuente, verdad? Porfi agrees with this, of course. He says that Diego engatusó (beguiled) Isabel and Ricas. He tells her not to say anything about their conversation to her mother. And he promises to split up Diego and Isabel.
The aunt of the deceased real Emiliano Guevara meets with Mateo. She gives him a photo. She says she doesn’t know his wife and son (?). She shows him a photo of her nephew. Mateo says he’ll do what he can.
Circe tells José (and of course Disgusto at the same time) that when Eliseo was killed she was fleeing from José and protecting Felipa from him. She gets right in Joselito’s face and tells him, basically, that “blood will out”. She’s a Gavona and he’s not. He’s just a cat, born to serve people like her.
Isa tells Gaby that she must not tell Diego about the Gaona cartel involvement in Babel or he will refuse to let her work there. And she needs the money.
Fernanda arrives late at her new job, explaining that she had to walk. The crabby boss is even nastier to her than he was to Paloma. Paloma is very nice to Fer, and tells her she’ll show her the ropes.
Deivid has showed up at Marlene’s house when she returns from shopping with Diana. [How does he know where she lives?] He still has a thing for her and tries to persuade her that he’s the guy. She shows him the ring.
Circe and Joselito continue trying to provoke each other. She ends up pointing her gun at Little Joselito and he definitely starts.
We see Diego, calling himself Emiliano, selling gas to people in the street for, apparently, a better price than that at the pump.
Porfi calls his papí for some more money, and Mateo hangs up on him.
Jim tells Isabel why he is in D.F. He had to leave his old life behind. He explains that 15 years ago he and his wife were a well-known dancing couple in Las Vegas. He convinced the place where he worked to do a modern Moulin Rouge dance. This would involve that the protagonist didn’t die of disease but from a gunshot. Alguien cargó la arma con una bala auténtica en vez de una salva. La mate. (Someone changed the blank cartridge to a real bullet and I killed her.)
Marlene gives Deivid the kiss of death and tells him she wants to be friends.
Nuria shows up to talk with Gabriela. I’m sort of tired of Nuria. She tells her about the “morning after pill”. Can’t figure out why Gaby says she should have gone to a doctor instead. Anyway, Gaby finds out about Ramona selling her the uppers.
José slams into Ramona’s room at Babel. I think she’s snorting coke, which flies all over the place. He slaps her around and calls her sanguijuela (leech). He accuses her of knowing Circe was in D.F. [I am baffled as to how he knows the connection between Circe and Ramona.] He tells her Circe has only ruined his life. He fires Ramona.
Jim tells Isa that he was able to prove he didn’t kill his wife on purpose. But he could not get work again in Las Vegas after the disgrace.
Disgusto tells Circe he doesn’t believe her. She points a gun at herself and tells him to go ahead and shoot her if that’s what he thinks. But he’ll lose todo el baro (all the pesitos) he put into the deal. The coward, of course, cares more about the money than Eliseo. She asks him, if he loved his step-son so much, where was he on the day of the velorio? She was there and didn’t see him.
I don’t want anyone to be a narco, but I sure like Circe’s style.
Flashback to Jim’s arrival in D. F. He found the place that would become Babel, but didn’t have the money because of his legal bills. And he had no credit history in Mexico. Then he met Gavino. At first it was just money laundering and probably drug sales. But then came the prostitution. He sold his soul to the devil.
He tells Isa that the other day the new boss Joselito killed one of the waitresses right in front of him and was told that, if he kept confronting José, he’d kill one right after the other. José bursts in just then and asks why Isa is there. As she scurries out, José says that the rules are changing.
Gaby loans Nuria some money to pay Ramona for the money owed for the pills. And Gaby says she won’t be buying any more.
José tells Jim that Ramona is betraying him with the Cartel Chilango. He says he’s going to run everything: all the money from drugs, money laundering, and from the girls. Jim says OK to this, as long as he doesn’t mess with Jim’s part of Babel. We see that Isa overhears this.
Porfi looks through the want ads. Let’s see: ayudante de albañil (hodcarrier for a mason). He then sees an ad for ayudante de barra (bar assistant). He’s thrilled, thinking free drinks. He’s chugging liquor the whole time he’s reading the want ads.
Ramona tells the “waitresses” she’s leaving. The door is open. They are free to leave and try their luck out there or they can work with Circe, doing you know what. They’re ready to do that. She tells them they’ll have to sneak out or Joselito might kill her.
After what she overheard, Isabel tells the dancers they have to leave. Ramona is leaving Babel and the narcos will be here forever.
Jim sees Ramona herding the girls out. He says he’ll keep security busy. She takes his cell and enters Piochas’ number. She says Piochas is loyal to Gavino and will help Jim when he needs it.
José tells a thug to go to Ramona and get him one of her girls [Did he forget he fired her?] He reminds the guy what he likes: mucha nalga y poca chichi.
Diana calls Chucho and tells him she’s setting up things for him to meet her sister. Chucho does a little dance.
Diego, much to Deivid’s disgust, has brought a lot of gifts wrapped in plastic bags to, I think, some poor people. They don’t seem like the same people who bought the gas.
Disgusto tries to get Felipa to tell him the truth about whether Circe killed Eliseo. She tells him not to buscarle cinco patas al gato. (Don’t make things complicated for yourself.)
In the dressing room Isa is trying to convince the dancers to leave. Jim arrives and backs up Isa’s plea. They have to leave before José shows up.
José is furious to find out that the “waitresses” have run off. He immediately blames el gringo.
Salas has arrived in D.F. and, by telenovela magic, immediately sees a bunch of photos of the real Emiliano Guevara posted on some walls.
Circe tells her compatriots that the Colombians have promised them all the weapons they need. But they want them to cross the border with a half ton of drugs.
Jim tells the dancers to hurry. José will have found out that the meseras escaped and will take it out on the first one he sees.
Just then José barges in. Jim tries to help the women, saying mildly that they’ve finished their rehearsal and will be leaving now. José says no one is going to leave.
At this same moment Porfirio arrives at Babel waving the newspaper ad at the guards. They sort of look at him as if they’re thinking “country bumpkin”.
José puts a gun under Jim’s chin. Jim tells him to go ahead and shoot; but, without him, Babel will die. No more money laundering. No more drug sales. José looks worried.
Thanks very much, novelera, for this terrific recap. It helped me with some scenes that I had a hard time understanding. And thanks for including so much Spanish.
I enjoyed your describing Circe "pointing her gun at Little Joselito." And yes, we see "telenovela magic" in Salas' coming upon the posters about the disappearance of Emiliano Guevara.
BTW, you rightly report that Circe says that José is "just a cat, born to serve people like her." The word "gato" was also used in the novela a few days ago, and I wondered whether it meant something in addition to "cat." Sure enough, WordReference.com says that in Mexico, "gato" can mean servant, slave, lackey.
I'll be out again Tuesday night, so I won't be able to do a recap. If someone else feels like doing one, or even just a short list of things that happen, that would be great. I'll try to do a recap for Wednesday's episode.
Super recap, novelera. Thank you. It was both a rewarding and frustrating episode. I really appreciate your including so many of the idioms and slang phrases they are using. The Spanish makes it all the more colorful than just giving us the straight translation, as in, "Don't look for a cat with 5 legs," which, of course, means, "Don’t make things complicated for yourself."
My favorite was, "Marlene gives Deivid the kiss of death and tells him she wants to be friends."
"Salas has arrived in D.F. and, by telenovela magic, immediately sees a bunch of photos of the real Emiliano Guevara.." Ah that magic, it's always available when you need it.
This was funny, "They sort of look at him [Porfi] as if they’re thinking 'country bumpkin'."
Juanita--I can do tonight (Tuesday), but I cede Friday to someone else.
Anita, it would be great if you'd do a recap of tonight's episode. I'll do tomorrow's, the Latin American Music Awards pre-empt Thursday's novelas, and we'll worry about Friday's on Friday. Or not.
Muchas gracias.
Although I understood buscarle cinco patas al gato, I was more familiar with a similar saying, "don't look for a cat with THREE legs" (buscarle tres patas al gato). Same idea, of course.
So much happens in these episodes that I often end up with “just the facts” when there’s a whole lot of nuance I’d put in if I spent a lot more time on it.
Uriel was great in this episode. His facial expressions during the encounter with Circe were terrific. We saw how, even when she’s telling him he’s nothing, he still wants her. And he not only wants her sexually, he wants to dominate her and defeat her new venture. I get the feeling that this is the only way he relates to women – dominance.
He immediately rushes in to hit Ramona and smash some of her possessions. This is a self-defeating response to having been beaten by a woman. At this point he doesn’t know the sexual slaves aren’t going to be around anymore. It’s pretty dumb to bully and fire the woman who has been so successful at laundering the cartel’s money and putting more money in their pockets with the kidnapped girls.
And, stung by his total defeat during the encounter with Circe and full also of sexual frustration, he immediately wants a woman, any woman with, of course, his preferred body type.
I can’t think what’s going to happen next. It’s hard to believe that Isa and the other dancers are going to be able to leave their jobs. And, should they do so, the writers would sacrifice the tense scenes at Babel.
Looking over my recap I realized that I forgot to say that Porfirio, talking to himself, said the bar assistant job was at Babel and something about what kind of club it was.
And I WISH I’d written down what Diego said to Deivid about giving those packages to some poor people. It was something to the effect of “What goes around comes around.” Or, if something goes right, you have to give back. This is also what Diego was doing before in Sonora, giving part of the stolen gas to people who really needed it.
another wonderful recap novelera, and comments, love it!
they sure love cocking their guns a lot.
I think Emiliano's aunt only had the picture of her son, hmm, I'm wondering what Eliseo did with their bodies because he was planning on burying them proper after everything calmed down, Salas knows.
I'm assuming Joselito (don't call me that) knows that Ramona is Circe's aunt and put 2 and 2 together.
the actress that plays Circe (Samadhi Zendejas) was also in Enemigo Intimo as Mamba, a boxer/enforcer for the prison Jefa.
ok, there were 2 kinds of waitresses, the ones that were there willingly, and the others chained to their beds, so maybe some just ran for it, and maybe the taco lady will come to haunt Mateo.
don't you just love when Joselito is on the way, and the girls go into slo-mo.
that's one of Pablo Escobar's things, help out the poor local people so they will stand behind you.
I was wondering if Chucho would get some money, anyway Deivid knows of another pipeline, you'd think they would rebury the pipe leaving their hose out for a refill.
and Disgusto swore to Felipa he would kill Circe if he found out that she did kill Eliseo, or so he says, hmm, when is Fernanda going to stumble upon his game.
yep, give Piochas a call.
Thanks, Novelera.
Circe and Joselito continue trying to provoke each other. She ends up pointing her gun at Little Joselito and he definitely starts.
I don’t want anyone to be a narco, but I sure like Circe’s style. My sentiments exactly.
Love when Joselito found out the Babel sex workers took off. Can't wait for him to find out they've upgraded their work and are now with Circe -- and protected by her enforcers.
He reminds the guy what he likes: mucha nalga y poca chichi.
Appreciate the dialogue. The Circe and Joselito actors get some very vivid lines.
Guessing whoever put a real bullet in Jim's gun will turn up. Strange that a nice guy like Jim had that kind of enemy back in the day.
Gearing up for tonight...
I wonder if Joselito's rampage against Ramona also had something to do with his feelings that not only a woman (or two) outsmarted him, but that he also suspects her loyalty--which is to Gavino and Circe. I seem to recall Ramona herself saying something about her and Gavino had a thing going a long time ago (thus my speculation that Circe was hers, but promptly dropped when novelera reminded me that Circe's mother died in childbirth).
Count me in the Circe fan club. She may be an obsessive, drug dealing nutjob, but she cares about her employees. She stood up for them and made it clear that they were NOT prostitutes and no one (of the other narcos) was to put a finger on them, other than taping the drugs to their backsides, of course. Gavino made a huge mistake not letting her in the business, and has helped create his biggest competition. She's an entrepreneur. A crazy, obsessive, socialist narcopreneur. I'm rooting for her!
Kelly
ps. anyone else have to pick out traffic light in, like, 10 photos? I swear I'm not a robot. That should be clear after 2 or 3 photos. And do walk-don't walk signs count as traffic lights?
Hi Kelly, nice to see a posting from you. I concur with everything you say about Circe--except, Gavino letting her join his business. He would have always kept her under his thumb, after all she's ONLY a woman. Circe needed to get out on her own to prove not only to her papi, but to all men, especially Joselito what she's made of. The only man that turns her into putty is Diego--although I fail to see why. Until he met Isa, he was a bit of a hot head macho himself.
(P.S. Instead of choosing "Anonymous" try "Name/URL" and sign in as anyone you want to be. It won't force you to get a "Google Account." See if that reduces the number of objects you need to identify...)
Anyway, in the spirit of Halloween, a Skeletal recap will be up in a couple of hours.
*Jim is still daring Joselito (don’t call me that) to shoot him—and away goes his prize. José reflects for less than a gnat’s eye blink and shoots some pottery on a chest behind him. It scares the bejeezus out of the bailarinas and they cower. Jim explains that the two halves of Babel have ALWAYS been separate. José can’t lose face in this situation and announces no one can leave until the waitresses come back. Jim and the staff don’t know where they went. José doesn’t believe them. So, they are being held hostage? If that’s what they want to call it, José is ok with that.
*Porfi is stuck outside the doors of Babel. He can’t get an interview. He’s pissed. As he moves away he sees an advert on the fence with someone who looks familiar. He pauses. (It's Marlene.)
*Circe instructs the new all-girl gang in gun safety—-er, gun firing. She tells them to shoot as if they were getting rid of the person who has abused them the most. Disgusto doesn’t think much of the all-girl gang. Ramona says they’ll learn. Circe gives them a pep talk—they’re no longer anyone’s slave or servant. They are associates—family. Brandon will be their teacher.
*Gavino is awakened from his half-dream state in the hospital by a whole bunch of men in white coats approaching his bed. He fears for his life. What’s going on? The higher ups have decided they don’t want him in the hospital any more and are sending him back to his prison cell.
*Disgusto tries to reach Marlene. She’s not answering her phone. He leaves a message. He wants her to get out of Babel as soon as she gets the message. Same goes for Diego. He can’t reach Isabel. Salas calls him and reveals that the family of the real dead Emilio Guevarra turned up. He promises to be in the D.F. soon.
*The restaurant owner has a complaint against Fer. Paloma intervenes and shows it was the waiter’s fault there was a mix-up. That makes Fer very grateful and thanks Paloma by offering her some food and company. In answer to Paloma’s question as to why she, a refined society lady—guessing by her comportment, is working as a cook, Fer tells her story. Paloma tells hers.
*Amanda acts bratty to a classmate who wants to eat with her. She tries to leave but he says he doesn’t have any friends and always has to eat alone. He finally gets up and leaves since she is unresponsive. As he does, two bullies taunt him and grab his cap, revealing a bald head. A teacher shows up and the two bullies play innocent. Amanda steps in and tells the truth. They are next seen sitting outside the principal’s office. He tells her he has cancer. He’s been through chemo. He doesn’t want her friendship out of pity.
*Jim tries to get José to let the bailarinas go. He refuses. Finally Jim admits he saw Ramona leave and take the waitresses with her, but he didn’t stop her. José tells Jim to get them all back, he doesn’t care how. He herds them all, men and women into a room (with a window, hehe) and takes Jim away.
Jim is made to call Circe to tell her that José has threatened to kill everyone if the waitresses aren’t returned. Ramona takes the call. She explains that she was fired and run off the property and so she can’t come back and can't make them come back. Circe takes the phone. She informs Joselito that she didn’t take anything that belonged to him and they aren’t on the same side any more. He goes back to his men and tells them if Ramona doesn’t help, they can start killing the ones they are holding one by one. Joselito is still acting like a dissed middle-schooler. He kicks a few things and says it’s all Circe’s fault. He grumbles.
*Diego parks outside Babel. Deivid (Davey is easier to type) is surprised Isa works there. Doesn’t Diego know Gavino owns and runs the business? They talk about what to do. Diego is sure Isa is in there. He decides to confront whatever is going on by himself. Davey tries to stop him and pull him back. Diego is not only hot-headed, he’s hard-headed. He forges ahead.
*Piochas gets word from Mateo that Gavino is going back to prison before he’s sufficiently recovered. We see Gavino on his feet now. He has plenty of police manpower to safely escort him back to prison.
*Chucho worries about what to wear to his meet and greet with Diana’s sister for dinner. Chucho calls Diego because he needs some cash. Diego hasn’t paid him yet.
*The Babel hostages get the window open. Jim is pushed into the room and sees what they are doing. He remembers Ramona telling him to call Piochas if he needed help. Meanwhile, Isa is pushed through the window first, but apparently she’s still inside the building (huh?). She makes it out but finds the gated property locked. Diego and Davey see her. She tells them how they are all being held hostage. They miraculously get the gate open. Davey starts to climb in the window after Isa tells them what is going on and Marlene is with the group. Isa wants to call Piochas. Diego won’t let her. They confer loudly outside. Then it’s Diego that goes in.
*Disgusto finally decides to leave the basement shooting range and go look for his mujer. Circe tells Brandon to go with him. They drive up to the front of Babel and watch what is going on outside. He recognizes Isabel. He tells Brandon that if she sees him, he’ll be in bigger trouble. He decides to leave her to her fate. (Coward—OTOH, he is only using her anyway.)
*Salas shows up at the police station and ends up talking to Mateo about the missing gringo. Salas gets no useful information. Mateo tries out a theory that he was nothing but a tourist, maybe he went missing on purpose to get away from his aunt. Of course, Mateo already knows there were three of them who disappeared.
*Porfi is on the phone in his hotel room, still trying to get a job (for which he apparently is not qualified, but wants a chance anyway). Two security men show up at his door and not only tell him he must vacate unless he can pay for the two nights he’s overstayed his welcome, but bodily remove him. As he physically objects to his treatment, he takes a tumble down the “staircase of death” and doesn’t die and isn’t even hurt. (Geeze Louize, he could have sued them.) They throw him out anyway after ascertaining he was ok. He gets his hat back. The bell boy brings him his suitcase and tells him where there is a cheap flophouse nearby.
*Training continues as the all-girl gang shooting range. Circe says they won’t fail her because they all want revenge on the men who hurt them. Felipa tells Circe about Gavino going back to jail.
*Joselito tosses a coin to see who dies first. Just as they start to go in, one of the male hostages is pushed out. Joselito sees immediately that Camila is missing.
Anita, that recap had a good amount of meat on its bones for a skeletal recap! Thanks so much.
I had the impression that Joselito was snorting some drug. Someone (?) mentioned something in passing about his being drugged. His behavior was extremely erratic, actually unhinged. He turned his back to his guys once, and I heard an inhale. He also kept sniffing as if his nose was about to run.
Yep, Disgusto only looks out for #1. He drove right off when it might cost him something to get Marlene out of there.
I suppose they are going with Amanda warming up to the post-chemo kid. But I just can't stand the kid. I've seen bratty kids in TNs before but they're usually better actors than this one.
I made a mistake in my Monday recap. I thought Salas was in DF and saw the posted "Missing" photographs. Of course it makes more sense that they would be in Sonora, since that was where he and his family were assaulted.
However, I'm not sure how Diego would be in danger using that name since the man went missing in Sonora, and the person in charge of the investigation is the massively incompetent Mateo. Did Mateo know that these are the names Diego and Isabel are using? I couldn't tell.
Kelly, I like your description of Circe: "obsessive, drug dealing nutjob". It will be interesting to watch her crew of machine gun totin' women.
Ah, I SO enjoyed Porfi getting strong armed out of his hotel room!
I thought Gavino's going back to prison was confusing. IIRC Mateo told Piochas this was because he'd be safer there and that he, Mateo, knew someone who arranged it. That seems odd. Didn't he get shanked in prison already?
Deivid is kind of sketchy. He didn't want Diego going in there, apparently thinking saving Isa wasn't worth the risk of losing his gas-stealing partner. But when he hears that Marlene is in there, he's all in.
José's thugs are losing trust in him fast. They are exchanging glances at his behavior. Like Viewerville, they think his insane idea of killing the dancers one by one makes no sense at all. Someone, can't remember who, told him that Circe doesn't care about the dancers, so where's his leverage.
They are great at cliffhangers in this novela.
marvelous recap Anita, thank you ever so much!
where is Camila?, Joselito asks, as the show ends.
from what Jim said last night, it finally clicked for me what his leverage is, he is the one and only legal owner and if he dies, poof, Babel is gone for the cartel.
with Disgusto calling Marlene, and Joselito collecting all the cell phones, I worried that he would make the connection and kill Marlene.
I too thought Joselito was snorting.
Mateo's news of Gavino's return to prison was confusing, but I think he implied it was good news, the order came from the Governor (which Gavino originally had an agreement with), and I think Mateo mentioned that everyone had been paid off, such that Gavino would now be on easy street, we'll see.
and when Mateo intervened with Salas (with that always-working-an angle smile, I was guessing he was being subtle about saying he wasn't going to pursue that investigation (in return for...).
ah and Salas called Diego with the news of his "falsa identidad", Diego will meet him when he lands in D.F.
that lousy coin toss by Joselito I think was to determine whether a man or woman would die first, he really is losing it, if only Circe would come back to him..., that's all he really wants.
Wow, Anita. Many thanks! The only time I've seen skeletons as nicely fleshed out as your recap is when healthy kids dress up as skeletons for Halloween.
I found it interesting that the young women Circe has recruited all did impressively well when handed a gun and told to shoot the bottles. Most often, inexperienced gun users are way off the mark. Indeed, so too are some with experience. Hmmm...are we to assume that Circe's instructions to "shoot as if they were getting rid of the person who has abused them the most" was all the inspiration they needed to turn into sharpshooters? Oh well, in telenovelaland, why not?
Yes, Disgusto showed his true colors by fleeing from Babel without trying to rescue Marlene. OTOH, though he thoroughly disgusts me, I think in this instance he probably did the smart, sensible thing. What could he possibly have accomplished by going in, even if Brandon came with him? (Of course, he could have called the police.) Joselito and his men are all armed, and of course Joselito hates him for allying himself with Circe's cartel. Though my first instinct was to sneer contemptuously at Disgusto for his cowardice, I find myself wondering what either Deivid or Diego think they can do against José and his band of armed thugs. (Then again, this is telenovelaland.
I'm not sure, but when Amanda spoke with Porfi outside her school, did she tell him that Diego was using the name Emiliano Guevara? She may have, but I don't really remember.
I rather liked the scene with Amanda and the boy with cancer. At the start, she tells him to get lost, she doesn't need any friends out of pity. Later, he tells her the same thing: he doesn't want any friends out of pity. Sounds like a relationship made in telenovela heaven. :-) Anyway, her standing up for him in his confrontation with the two lying bullies (in spite of feeling some fear) looks as if this may be the first step toward a redeemed Amanda.
Juanita, like, I think, Henry II after Becket was killed in the cathedral, Amanda will have to crawl on her knees through the streets to redeem herself with ME.
you guys are confusing me with the chapter numbers, I believe last night was chapter 31, the only reason I can keep this straight is a double check with Telemundo's home page where they link to the recent novela videos giving the day and chapter number.
deb, I think you're right about last night's being episode 31. I too usually check the Telemundo page when I post a recap, since I can't keep the numbers straight in my head. So when I did a recap last Thursday, it was of episode 28. Friday would have been 29, Monday 30, and last night's 31. I'll be doing tonight's, which will be 32. There will be none tomorrow, since the novelas are all being pre-empted by the Latin American Music Awards. So Friday's will be 33.
Thanks for noting this.
I put #31 on my recap because I had no idea. And I came up with that, IIRC, by checking Anita's recap of the Friday before.
As to comments, they are all spot on.
As to the chapter numbers, I admit to using the ones Comcast puts up on my saved DVR. I save several episodes together before deleting them and I'm in sync with Comcast. We were all in sync until around the mid-twenties. Perhaps Telemundo forgets or doesn't have any relationship to programs that pre-empt episodes??
Juanita--You are remembering correctly, Amanda did use the name Emiliano Guevarra as the one on their false passports. Porfi already knew of the false name (through his search on the car plates), but didn't know it was "officially" on passports they were using. Now, whether Porfi passed this information on to Mateo or not, I'm not sure. It certainly would be information Mateo would use to his benefit.
Thanks, Anita. My favorite: As he physically objects to his treatment, he takes a tumble down the “staircase of death” and doesn’t die and isn’t even hurt. (Geeze Louize, he could have sued them.)
Disgusto could make an anonymous call to the police. That would be my move, but then it would end in a blood bath on both sides because Joselito is way too out of it to back down. As for Diego going in, physical cowardice is definitely not an issue for him, but what’s his plan? Talk sense into Joselito? Sneak up from behind and clobber him on the head?
The writers seem to be trying to redeem Ramona, but I just can’t forget her selling Lourdes into an even worse level of sex slavery.
I figured Amanda would chill out once she started making friends of her own. She’s about that age when kids no longer want to hang out with mommy and daddy anyway. But I’m still guessing she’ll blab something to her pop that she shouldn’t.
Juanita, yep, those girls became sharpshooters in no time. They could've at least shown us someone at first missing a bottle.
I had a mental image of the new sharpshootin' gals having to defend the drug warehouse because the male henchmen are laid out drunk from all the beer bottles they've drunk to keep training the women.
Isabel remembers Jim telling her that if she needs help, she should call Piochas. So that's what she does. She tells him that José has kidnapped everyone, and she needs Piochas' help. José is threatening to kill everyone.
Ramona shows the women who are now part of Circe's army that what they have is pure Colombian cocaine, but they have to add some sand to it in order to double the amount. Circe sees Disgusto and asks whether he rescued his novia. No, Disgusto replies, because Diego was there, and I didn't want him to see me. Circe's eyes light up at his mention of Diego.
Diego has gone into Babel but comes out and reports that he didn't see anyone. Isa realizes that he didn't know where to look. He wants her to leave, but she wants to help rescue the others who are still inside. And we see that inside Babel, José continues to terrorize everyone. He hits Jim, knocks him to the ground, and then kicks him viciously while he's down.
As a result of Isa's phone call, Piochas phones José. "Are you crazy?" Piochas asks. José insists that he's the boss. Piochas reminds José that Babel is a very important business for money laundering. He asks if José is betraying Gavino, and he tells José that Gavino has left the hospital. That news clearly shakes José up. He tells his men that they'll have to let everyone go. José tells his hostages that they all have to go back to their work at Babel. "This was all just a dream" [Gee, José, even with my poor Spanish, I know the difference between sueño and pesadilla.] José warns Marlene that she better not go to the police, or she may wind up dead. Suddenly, Diego comes into the room with a gun pointed at José. Since José had already said that everyone can leave, I'm not sure that Diego's appearance made much difference, though it did give him and José a chance to exchange threats and insults.
Back at Circe's, Disgusto tells her that the most important thing is that Diego no know that he (Disgusto) is here and that Disgusto and Circe work together. Circe points out to him that Diego is key to their being able to get the half ton of cocaine across the border. [I'm not sure why that's the case.]
The scene shifts to the school that Amanda and Ricas attend. School has just let out, and Amanda calls out to Edgar (the boy with cancer) and tells him that he was wrong, she didn't defend him out of pity. OK, whatever, says Edgar, and goes off. [Yawn] Fernanda comes to take the kids home. She asks them how school was, and for the first time, I think both kids said it was OK.
Gavino is being moved from the hospital back to prison. He keeps having flashbacks to the attack on him in prison that sent him to the hospital. He expresses his determination to deal with José, even from jail. He wants José to know that he, Gavino, rules the Gaona cartel.
Meanwhile, Piochas tells his men that José has appointed himself head of the cartel, but the real head is still Gavino. Piochas tells the men they need to find more women. Normally, that's what Don Mateo does, but lately he's been very slow.
Diego has a talk with Isabel. He's unhappy that she's working at Babel, and that she lied about her work (I guess he's talking about her claiming she worked in a supermarket0. She tells him that she loves dancing, "it's me," she says. But then she says that for Diego's peace of mind, she won't go back to Babel.
But clearly, what Isabel says isn't enough to make Diego happy. He has the nerve to accuse her of lying to him, when he has lied even more seriously to her. The hypocrite whines, "Who asked that we be honest with each other? And what good was it that I changed because I love you if you don't fulfill your end of the deal?" He goes on to make three points: 1) he doesn't believe anything José says, 2) it's not a good idea for her to return to Babel, and 3) they need their own space so they can decide whether they want their relationship to continue.
Fernanda sees that Isabel is hurt. Isabel tells her that Diego is the most important person for her aside from her children. Fernanda urges her not to make the same errors she (Fernanda) did. "Struggle for him, don't lose him," Fernanda advises.
Meanwhile, Porfirio moves to a very cheap, dirty apartment. He pays the landlord for three days in advance, while watching a rat scavenging for food on the floor. (This made the nasty side of me quite happy.) He continues his search for a job. He calls in reponse to an ad for a gardener, and though he admits that he has no experience, he's told he can start the next day.
Jim and José talk about who controls what at Babel. José threatens that Jim could wind up in a ditch (zanja). Jim replies that he's tired of José's threats, and that José would do him a favor if he left him in the ditch. José seems to be slightly more accommodating than before. He tells Jim "I'll give you and your people immunity. If you'd like, we can put it in writing." Jim says yes, putting it in writing is a good idea. José tells him to get out a pen and some paper, and then he dictates point number one: "Do not call me Joselito."
Circe is about to leave. Felipa is worried about the risks Circe is taking. Circe tells her, "My only enemy is José, and he's in Mexico City." Circe then turns to Ramona and says she wants Ramona to be in charge of the business and to be her eyes and ears, because the business isn't only Circe's, it's also Ramona's. Felipa is crushed. She takes Circe aside and asks "Why her?" Circe explains that Ramona has a lot of valuable experience from Babel. "It's nothing personal," she assures Felipa. Felipa is not assured.
Diego agrees to go to the park with Ricas. While they're by themselves, Ricas says "It was my fault that my father and you fought." Diego assures Ricas that it wasn't at all his fault, and that both Ricas' father and Diego were wrong to try to settle things violently. Hypocrite Diego now tranforms into Saint Diego. He urges Ricas not to be so hard on his father. If his father was so bad, Amanda wouldn't like him. "Peace and Love" [in English] is what Ricas should aim for.
Piochas is looking over the supply of kidnapped women that he has. Mateo rushes in and asks what the emergency is. One of the young women yells out to Mateo, "It's you! You kidnapped me!" Piochas tells Mateo that what he (Piochas) needs is more women, At least ten more.
Disgusto comes to see Marlene and tells her how upset he was at what happened to her at Babel. He then asks, "Did you know that Diego was in the city? You knew and didn't tell me?" He also asks about Camila. Marlene is more cautious than I would have expected. She claims she doesn't really know Camila all that well, and she doesn't even know whether she has a partner. "She always goes out alone," she tells Disgusto. [Perhaps some of Diana's and Camila's skepticism about Disgusto has made an impression after all.] Disgusto tells her that "Diego must not know that I'm with you. If he knows before the divorce, he could kill me. He's a criminal."
Deivid gives Chucho some money, apparently because of the deal Diego insisted on. Chucho is thrilled. He's about to see his casi novia. Deivid tells him there's no such thing as a casi novia. Either she is your novia or she's not. Chucho explains that since he hasn't yet asked for permission, she's just his almost novia. He also looks approvingly at Deivid's shirt, and I think he asks him for advice about what to wear. The next time we see Chucho, he's wearing a new shirt [it's not to my taste, and I can't tell whether Diana likes it or not]. Diana introduces him to Marlene, and Chucho presents Marlene with a bouquet of flowers.
Gavino is now back in prison. Though it's late at night, a guard comes to his cell: "Get up, you have a visitor." It's Circe, who has managed to get in to see him even though visiting hours are long past. She claims that she has come to see how he is, how he's feeling. After all, he's her father. There's a long pause, after which she says, "That's what I would have said if you'd treated me differently. If you had simply trusted me. Instead, you turned the cartel over to José, the king of the imbeciles. You underestimated your own flesh and blood. And now I'm the queen of the chilango cartel" (i.e., the Mexico City cartel). She tells him that she put him in prison, and eventually the name Gavino Gaona will disappear from everyone's mind. He tries to grab her and presumably strangle her, but the guards grab him and cart him off back to his cell.
Salas comes to see Diego and Isabel. He tells them that the Guevara family has come,"and they're about to find out that we've stolen their identity." Amanda overhears the conversation. Salas goes on to say some things that I don't understand. Diego doesn't think that the matter is all that serious, but Salas assures him that it is. He then says Véanlo así, which I think probably means something like "look at it this way" if he's addressing Diego and Isabel, or "they'll see it this way," if he's talking about the Guevara family or the police or ?? Then Isabel says "They aren't going to do that to that poor woman again, are they?" (no le harían eso a la pobre mujer otra vez, verdad?). Do WHAT to that poor woman? Salas replies, o lo descubren suplantando a Emiliano Guevara o por no hacerlo, which I take to mean "either they discover him impersonating Emiliano Guevara or ????" Arrgh.
Porfirio comes to where Isabel and Diego are living. Fernanda tells him that Isabel isn't at home, but the kids are. Amanda comes out to greet him. She tells him that her mother may be in serious trouble. She asks whether her mother could go to prison. Porfirio says it's quite possible and it's all Diego's fault. He tells her that he and Amanda have to protect Isabel. How? He needs her to give him the false passports of Isabel, Ricas, and Diego, so that he'll have proof of their false identity. On that cheery note, the episode ends.
I hope some people can help me understand this scene with Salas.
Dear Juanita--You've provided a top-drawer recap of a terribly confusing episode, primarily because of the way everybody talks. We could put words in their mouths and come out with something very different for the same action-packed (not) episode.
I only have one little "tick" to pick, especially for the poor drug USERS up norte. There's not much difference between the sounds of arena and harina, especially when it's spoken by Ramona. Arena IS sand; harina is flour. Ramona was telling the girls she was cutting the pure stuff with harina (which the lungs or digestive system can handle). Sand would be like adding glass or rock dust. It was a comical translation, though.
I was surprised Felipa was against this practice. Ramona told her it's all about the money.
As for the YAWN scene. I wonder if the writers (or some important relative of the Amanda character) wanted a bigger role for her. They probably didn't like her just being a brat and snitching to her father. I don't really care if she ever gets redeemed. Diego already has his hands full with Isa and Ricas.
I stand corrected for yesterday's mis-identification that Disgusto saw Isa and didn't want to be seen by her. It was very clear today it was Diego he didn't want to be seen by.
Your guess about Salas information is as good as anybody's, Juanita. I did figure that "la pobre mujer" referred to Fernanda. Maybe he was intimating that they would make another attempt to kidnap and hold her hostage to find Diego. However, all "three" cartels know now that Diego is in the D.F.
Poor Chucho. He looked dorky-er than ever.
The girl in the line-up who accused Mateo of kidnapping her was the one he drugged with the Gaiter-Aide.
Muchísimas gracias, Anita, for your very helpful and reassuring posting. I burst out laughing at the arena/harina confusion. I confess I did scratch my head about their adding sand to the cocaine. Yes, flour makes a LOT more sense!
Thanks too for recognizing that the girl who accused Mateo of kidnapping her was the one he drugged with the Gator-Ade not that long ago. It occurred to me that she might be that one, but I wasn't sure.
What you say about la pobre mujer referring to Fernanda makes sense, but I am still confused about what Salas is proposing as a way out, indeed, the only way out, according to him.
That was a splendid recap, Juanita! And I agree with Anita. The way these people talk with about 70% of it being slang and kind of mumbled at that, it makes it difficult. I backtrack on the recording a lot to try to clarify what I heard.
My sense of what Salas said seemed odd. But I interpreted what he said as sending another text message to the auntie confirming Emiliano Guevara’s being alive and well in Mexico. Salas was the one who arranged everything for Eliseo. So he probably still has the cell phone(s) from the crime scene of the assault of poor Emiliano and his family. I think that is what was meant by “poor woman”. Deceiving her once again.
Mateo was furious at the idea that an unknown number of the young women he’d seduced and handed over to the cartel might be free to tell the cops what he did.
I was pleased to see that Marlene is not a racist. I expected her not to react well to Chuco’s indigenous appearance.
I thought I saw a yellow pencil somewhere between Gavino and Circe – and that he might have been planning to stab her.
At first I wasn’t even sure it was her, without the lipstick.
Thanks, Juanita.
I definitely think Camila is suspicious of Disgusto. When Disgusto declared Diego is no good, it seems a lightbulb went off cause she knew Diego risked his life to try to save them from Joselito.
I think I'm alone here on Amanda. She still loves her father, but I'm thinking she's too smart to give him the family's passports. I guess we'll see...
Circe, smarten up. You are not a totally self-made woman. You used your father's rep and contacts to build your business. Joselito is getting worse by the minute. You may need dear old (misogynistic) pop one day.
Ah, I think Chucho is so cute.
Many thanks, novelera and Niecie.
Novelera, I like your interpretation of Salas' conversation with Diego and Isabel. What you suggest is a strategy, and one that works very well with Isabel's "poor woman" comment. As for your not at first recognizing Circe without the lipstick, I almost said exactly the same thing in the recap! Also, you may be right about the yellow pencil. I haven't gone back to see the recording (again), but I do vaguely recall seeing something when Gavino's hands were close to Circe's. (BTW, when I'm doing a recap, I almost always go back over the recording when I'm not understanding something. Alas, last night, I did that a lot but had relatively little to show for it except bags under my eyes in the morning :-) )
Niecie, yes, I think Camila is suspicious of Disgusto. I'm hoping that she's able to raise Marlene's suspicions as well. And I hope you're right about Amanda not giving her father the passports. I suspect that she will. As you say, I guess we'll see...
thanks so much Juanita, I had no english captions last night and found your recap very helpful!
and thanks all for filling in the holes!
I interpreted the prison scene as Gavino slamming Circe's head into the table and trying to stab her with the pencil, when they grabbed him, but I may be coloring this too much.
Juanita, I think Niecie meant Marlene, because Isa/Camila is already clued in on what a patan he is with what he did to Fernanda and that Diego hated him as a step-father. Marlene is the one that has stayed in the dark, even after Isa's warning her about Disgusto. So, Marlene's lightbulb moment is coming at the right time. It's not too late for her.
Anita, I also thought Niecie meant to say Marlene. She had a blank look on her face when Disgusto called him a criminal, even though she kind of had that feeling about him when Isa first came to DF. But she's heard only good things from Isa since, and his disarming one of the thugs and saving the dancers (not knowing Joselito had already caved) could have gone a long way to change her mind.
Speaking of Joselito, his face was priceless when he spoke on the phone with Piochas. The boss is out of the hospital and likely to live. And Piochas reminded him how important Babel was to the cartel. He came down from his drug high fast.
No episode tonight. I will be at a Halloween party Friday night. Hopefully we can get something, at least bare bones, for Friday night.
Yes, I meant "Marlene" when I said "Camila." Marlene looks more skeptical now when Disgusto is not slobbering on her. She's just not ready to give up the dream of that well-heeled, (gag!) classy man she's been waiting to leave his wife all these years.
ITA I wanted to laugh when Piochas told Joselito that Gavino left the hospital. I am looking forward to the day Joselito and Gavino are face to face.
