Tenías Que Ser Tú

I just took a look at Tenías Que Ser Tú today. I wish I had known that Raquel Garza was in it, I fell in love with her as Barbara the dippy fortune teller in Amar a muerte.

The TN also appears much more comedic than I thought it was. Does anyone know what episode they are up to? I can't tell from the quickie summaries at Wikipedia.

I'll also record Sin Tu Mirada since I am so often wrong about these TNs, and what sort of shows they will be. I'll watch a few episodes and then decide if I want to continue watching. In a way I hope it's not of interest to me, I probably spend more time watching this stuff that I should.

andy - I know what you mean about watching and deciding. I didn't last two weeks (I think) with Sueño de Horror. Sometimes I find gems, and sometimes I judge too quickly and miss some real gems.
 

Tenias Que Ser Tu

Hey, Andy. I tune in to "Tenias Que Ser Tu" once in a big while because I like Ariadne Diaz. It's a cutesy TN. I believe they are on episode 44 or 45. The TN has 87 episodes, so they are at about the halfway mark. Yes, our beloved fortune teller from AAM is in this show. She is the love interest of Ezequiel (Arturo Peniche), but his kids don't care for her. Sashi Tamashiro who was Margarita in "Enamorandome de Ramon" also stars in this, as well as dreamy-eyed Andres Palacios who was the doctor in "El Vuelo de la Victoria"...he is the main protag.

En Tierras - GRAN FINAL
Did anyone watch this and was as disappointed as I was? Many of the threads we were following were just jumped over in order to get to the reconciliation among the various Otero family members and bad guys in jail (or cooked to a crisp). Isabel looked lovely in her wedding dress and the indigenous ceremony was a nice nod to Daniel's relationship with his shaman.

Anita, I started to watch this, but then dropped it for a variety of reasons. I did get to see some of the Gran Final, though. Isabel did look striking in that dress and the ceremony was pleasantly different from the typical ceremonies.

Rgv Chickie, thanks for the information, it helps get me up to speed on a TN that I'm starting in with at its half-way point.

I'm hoping that there is a fair amount of time for Raquel Garza in it. I find her very funny, but also very pretty.

I set up my DVR to give this one a shot. Haven't watched a Uni novela in a while, but I'm hoping this is good. I usually watch the Telemundo offerings with Spanish subtitles, especially when recapping. If the Uni subtitles are as bad as I recall them being, I'll get practice in doing without!

Well, it's off to a good start. I did note the rabbit running off at the very start and wondered if its name was "El Alacran" LOL For those of you who didn't see Amar a Muerte, Claudia Martin's character had a thing going with a bad guy called El Alacran--he was obsessed with rabbits :-)

Episode 1 - The Beginning! (Very brief synopsis, feel free to add details...)

The story starts in present day with Marina walking through the woods “seeing” everything with her other senses. We are taken to “years before” when Prudencia announces her pregnancy and Luis Alberto, her husband, is super excited about becoming a father…assuming that the baby is a boy of course. To celebrate, Luis gives Prudence some beautiful aquamarine earrings. Months later, Luis has to go to their ranch "La Añoranza" and insists that Prudencia go with him. Due to the strain of the journey, Prudencia goes into premature labor placing her and the baby at risk. During that same stormy night, Damiana, the village midwife, is helping her sister (I think), who dies giving birth to her son. The baby boy is left an orphan since his father had died some months before.

At La Añoranza, Luis Alberto is desperate because the doctor has not arrived. He is informed that the doctor will not be able to make it since all the roads are closed and the telephone wires are down due to the storm. Damiana is summoned to go to the ranch to help with Prudencia. When the baby is born, Damiana tells Angustias that Prudencia gave birth to a girl who unfortunately did survive the birth. When Damiana mentions the orphan baby boy, Angustias talks her into exchanging the babies so that Luis Alberto and Prudencia can have the son that they have been longing for. After the exchange takes place, Angustias swears to keep the secret and pays Damiana with the aquamarine earrings.

Upon returning to the other woman’s humble shack, Damiana learns that Prudencia’s baby girl is alive, but very weak.

The next morning, Angustias feels forced to tell Prudencia the truth about the exchange of the babies when Prudencia looks for the earrings and mentions that her husband will report the missing earrings to the cops. Though Prudencia is torn about the death of her child, they both decide not to tell Luis Alberto.

Damiana vows to take care of the baby girl if she manages to survive; she names the baby, Marina, after the earrings that were given to her when the baby was born.

Over the months, Damiana realizes that Marina is blind and does not hesitate to teach her how to use her other senses to get around on her own.

Years later ... Marina has become a very beautiful young woman and has learned to know the world in a different way. Meanwhile Luis Alberto is a handsome, intelligent and very studious young man who is studying to be a doctor in Canada.

Isauro, a young doctor, arrives to work at the small town. When he meets Marina he is mesmermized with her beauty and offers to give her private lessons in reading Braille. In a short time, Isauro becomes Marina’s very good friend. Uh-huh and secretly in love with her?

In Canada, Luis Alberto is concentrating on his studies, but Vanessa (whose mother is very insistent that she lasso in Luis Alberto) distracts him until he gives in and kisses her. The senior Luis Alberto is ecstatic when he finds out that Junior finally kissed Vanessa. Woopee!!

In the evening, Damiana leaves her shack to go assist someone with an ailment. As she leaves, a log falls in front of the door blocking it while small candles burn near a window. Oh-noes! Later, Marina sleeps as the wind blows and a curtain catches fire. The shack quick fills with smoke and Marina wakes up. She runs to the door, but can’t open it—she is trapped! Oh, my! What to do! She starts screaming for help. Isauro happens to be taking a walk in the woods when he hears the cries for help. He runs to the shack, wets a blanket to cover himself, and runs in! He helps Marina get out safely, but before he can get out, a gas can explodes causing a large burst of flames. Isauro screams out in pain. Watch tomorrow for—the rest of the story!

 

Luke, yes, it seems that we will have to follow the plot earrings :-) Darn, I missed the pozole part...oh well. I couldn't tell how old Vanessa is, but she sure is assertive, isn't she? Yes, prepa means high school.

Prepa short for preparatorio, which in essence is what it sounds like in English preparing you for what comes next.. I’m pretty sure this is meant for college bound kids, but maybe not. Maria Jose in Sortilegio told Alex she’d finished the prepa, but we know she wasn’t going on to college—no money, unemployed father, younger sister.
 

Prepa sounds like prep school, although that term is no longer used for some private school names...that I know of, though back in the day it may have meant college prep? It is the source of terms like the "preppy look", etc.

Vanessa was in utero when her mother and Prudencia were talking about after Luis Al, Jr. was born. Vanessa’s mother was ready to marry off her unborn daughter (she had wanted to find out ahead of time, so she could have everything ready) to Junior right away. Pru seemed a bit skeptical and wanted to take a wait and see attitlulde. SO, lshe’s maybe two months younger than Junior.

OK, pretty good start. Some of the scenes were a bit confusing. They showed Marina at, say, one year old, when Damiana realizes she can't see. Then, IIRC, they showed Prudencia holding an infant. Oh well.

Luis Alberto looks, to me, quite a bit older than Marina. And way too old for Vanessa. But thanks for the reminder that she's not that much younger. I had forgotten the scene of Vanessa's mother wanting their offspring to marry. Maybe Luis Alberto Sr. has a lot more money???

I hope the kindly doc isn't burned up. That was an awful scream. And why didn't Damiana come home?

I'm on the West Coast and usually don't get home until 6:30 or later (40 mile commute one way) so I won't be commenting early. And tonight I had to watch the Golden State Warriors basketball game first!

I stuck with it until the end all because of Cris de la Fuente, but let's face it: it wasn't that great and I had to watch the end twice thinking I might have missed some scenes.

Anita, thank you for reminding us of that scene. So prearranged marriages are still in the wee minds of Mexican elite..in this TN. We'll see how that goes! Vanessa might be all for it, but Junior may not be too keen on the idea.

Novelera, glad to 'see' your here. I have no idea what could have kept Damiana so long, but who leaves candles burning right next to a curtained window??? Not very smart. And how long has Damiana been leaving Marina by herself at night? That shack door looks like anyone could open it with a push of a finger!

Adriana Noel, the only reason I would tune into "En Tierras Salvajes" once in a while was to see a shirtless Cris RAWWRRR!

I don't watch MMTMF much--hate Guido and find him both creepy and annoying. I usually catch up on the recaps, though.

Episode 2: Part 1 (Did this from memory; so the sequence may be off. Add details I missed, please)

As a result of the fire, Marina gets out unscathed; the young, handsome doctor, however, isn’t as lucky. He suffered severe burns to his left side including half of his face. Marina stresses when she learns that her hero, Dr. Isauro, was rushed to the hospital after risking his life to save her.

Isauro, devastated with the severity of his burns and the scars that he will be left with becomes embittered and withdraws from everyone. He asks Damiana not to tell Marina about his severe burns since he does not want her to be by his side only out of compassion and pity.

Once home, Isauro refuses to eat or see anyone; he is horrified to look at himself; so he decides to get himself a mask to cover the scars. After he tells his housekeeper that he is not even going to continue his practice, Marina arrives and encourages him to continue seeing his patients. Isauro agrees only after Marina offers to become his assistant.

In Canada, Alberto continues to study diligently while Vanessa does everything she can to distract him. He finally asks her if she really wants to be his girlfriend (not too enthusiastically). Vanessa, of course, is elated.

Six Years Later—

Marina continues to be Isauro’s assistant; and he continues to teach her to read. Marina loves to read and confides that she would like become a great doctor. Meanwhile, Alberto finishes his medical career and asks his family to spend some time in "La Añoranza" before starting his career. He wants to specialize, coincidentally, in plastic surgery.

When the Ocaranzas return Alberto receives a gift from his father—a rifle. Alberto is not really into guns, but after some urging from his father, he decides to go to the woods to practice his aim. Meanwhile, Marina and Toribio, her friend who is mentally ill, go out to the woods to look for herbs for Damiana. As Alberto is practicing his aim, he catches sight of Toribio who is stealing some avocados from his property. When Toribio sees him, he panics and runs back to Marina and tells her that someone is after him and they are going to kill him.

Isauro goes to see Marina at her house and is quite upset that she is not there. After Damiana explains that Marina went off to look for some herbs, Isauro tells her to tell Marina that he wants to talk to her about her future.

While Alberto continues to practice his aim, he accidently pulls the trigger. Toribio panics even more and runs off leaving Marina by herself. Alberto manages to run into Marina who chides him for trying to hurt the animals. Alberto tries to explain that he accidently shot the rifle, but Marina is not convinced. When Alberto tries to get closer, Marina warns him that she will bite him. In trying to calm her down and still not noticing that she is blind, Alberto grabs Marina’s arm; so…she bites his hand and runs off leaving him confused and enchanted by their strange encounter.

At the ranch, Prudencia remembers when she gave birth to her daughter; she fears that her husband will see Damiana, the midwife, and that she will tell him the whole truth.

Later, Isauro is at his office and refuses to see any patients (he is still upset that Marina was not at her home). After Marina arrives, she tries to talk him into seeing patients, but he would rather talk to her about her future. He wants her to go to the city with him so that together they can start a new life away from the village. Marina refuses and tries to make Isauro understand that the people of the town need him. She also worries about Toribio and who will look after him. Isauro gives in to Marina after she assures him that she will continue to help him in the office.

Ep 2: Part 2

Alberto goes out for a walk hoping to see Marina again, but has no luck. Later, he decides he wants to go horseback riding; so he goes to the stables where he sees Paulino, a young ranchhand, with a very nice saddle. When Alberto asks him about the saddle, Paulino makes it very clear that that saddle is his. Just then, Paulino’s father approaches and convinces Paulino to let Alberto use the saddle; so Paulino ends up giving it to him.

Marina tells Damiana about Isauro’s offer to go live in the city. She assures Damiana that she will not even think about going unless Damiana goes with her.

Later, Damiana talks to a man (didn’t catch his name) about the return of the Ocaranzas. She worries that they will find out that she is living in a house they own. The man tells her not to worry since the family had that house abandoned, but Damiana still worries and thinks that maybe she and Marina should leave.

At the ranch, Prudencia has a conversation with Alberto about his relationship with Vanessa. Pru advises Alberto not to settle for someone that he has grown accustomed to; he should really be with someone for love. Luis (Sr.) interrupts their talk and urges Alberto to speed up his wedding plans, since he wants to have many grandchildren soon. He adds that “only the poor marry for love.” (Idiot!) After Alberto leaves, Luis chides Pru for trying to dissuade Alberto from marrying Vanessa; he coldly reminds her that they married for convenience, not for love.

At the ranchhand quarters, Paulino sits playing his guitar and singing a song (very nice voice!) when Alberto comes in to talk to him. After they chat about music, Alberto asks Paulino if he knows of any “special” girls in town. Paulino wonders what Alberto means by “special.”

They've turned Isauro into a jerk too. I hope he changes back to his kind self soon.

Thanks again, Rgv Chick. Your recapping style is excellent. Hanging out at Telemundo I had not seen yours. Succinct but still full of details.

Isauro is controlling and possessive. While there is certainly some sincerity to his wish for Marina to learn more and be exposed to city life, I feel that down deep he wants her all to himself.

Alberto is a pretty nice young man. He innocently asked to use the beautiful saddle. And, as he said, he assumed it was just part of the property of the ranch his family owns. Paulino didn't want to hear his explanation, just got all "you rich guys take everything" on Alberto. His father should not have insisted that Alberto use the saddle. Lino said he bought it with his own money.

The father, whose name I also missed, appears to be the capataz of the ranch.

I am enjoying this novela. To me it appears to be a sort of throwback to earlier types: ranch life; rich entitled father; sweet poor girl; lots of kindly servants, and the poor but deserving young woman eventually wins out over the rich, snobby one.

RGV--You make recapping look so easy. Thanks--I could follow all the action with just a few of your words.

About Paulino (aka Lino)--he and Al grew up together and were buddies. Al got off on the wrong foot with him by claiming the saddle, as being the property of the ranch. When Lino's dad interfered, he "made" Lino give the saddle to Al as a gift, which Al accepted. Later Lino told his dad that it truly WAS his saddle, he bought it with his earnings he'd saved up. Dad reminds him that for several generations they have been 100% loyal to the Ocaranzas. I only expanded this scene because it struck me at the time as being important to the story in the future. Are they setting up a rivalry between the two? Who is Lino going to be interested in--Marina or Vanessa?

The guy talking to Damiana in the house is none other than Piggorio (Sergio Reynoso) from El Tal. He works at the ranch and seems to have a position of importance. His name is Margarito and Paulino is his son.]

I was shocked that Isauro was going to end up scarred. Interesting that his face and arm, etc. were so badly damaged, but in the hospital, his hair was never near a flame.

Does anyone know the name of the housekeeper for Isauro? Was it Ramona, or was that someone else?

Novelerea, I agree that Margarito shouldn't have insisted that Lino give the saddle to Alberto. It was obvious that Alberto understood and was not going to press the issue.

Anita, I think that if there is going to be a rivalry between Alberto and Lino, it'll be for Vanesa. I would think that Lino knows Marina already and they haven't shown that he has an interest in her...yet. Ramona is, in deed, Isauro's housekeeper; and Hortensia is the other housekeeper at La Anoranza.

Another tidbit of info that was interesting to me is that the abandoned house Damiana and Marina are currently living in was the house Eulalia, Alberto's bio mom, lived in.

OMGosh, I just realized that Sergio Reynoso is David Reynoso's son. How could I have missed that; Sergio looks so much like his father. My mom loved watching David's movies...heading down memory lane :-)

For such an illustrious dynasty, it's surprising there is not Wikipedia entry for either one of them. I just had to look him up, because he doesn't look like the son of anyone--he's always looked older and mean. He certainly has the face for it (not being disrespectful, the world of tns needs bad guys to look kinda bad). Maybe he turns out to be a good guy in this one--mis-directed in his loyalty, but not one of the villains.
 

Loved Paulino’s voice. This is a good cast. Thank you Rgv Chick for such a great recap. I must have dozed off and you filled me in. I really appreciate the work all the recappers do on this site. I even am reading the recaps from a Fuego en la Sangre. I have seen so many comments about the recaps for that novella and must say I have not been disappointed

Tenías Que Ser Tú

I am definitely going to continue with this, I only wish I had started from the beginning. Tenías Que Ser Tú is a very sweet romantic comedy with most everybody partnered with the wrong person. Very funny, and Amanda(Raquel Garza) is excellent. I didn't know she could do such physical comedy. Lots of good-looking women and even the galanes are OK, not your usual scruffy beefcake with two day old beards. (Rgv Chickie, I'll take your word for it about "dreamy-eyed Andres Palacios". His eyes look normal to me :-)

But this TN is definitely not for everybody. I have been watching for a few days now, and unless I missed it, there hasn't yet been a single kidnapping, rape, murder, suicide, torture, or disfigurement. Well, you can't have everything.
