Ep 23: Part 1 The Diablo’s Pact
*Su goes to see Pru and tells her that Beto hasn’t left yet. She suggests that Pru cry, plead and even exaggerate if she has to in order to keep Beto there. Beto then comes in to check on Pru. When she asks if he is leaving, he tells her that his place is at Marina’s side. Pru doesn’t understand how he can be so sure of his love since he doesn’t know her that well. Beto insists he has made his decision; so Su asks if he would change his mind if his father accepts Marina.
*Doc tells Ramona to prepare the rooms; Marina and her mother will be coming to live there. When Ramona asks why, Doc tells her to mind her own business and HURRY!
*At the ranch, Beto thinks his father will never accept Marina; so Su urges him to talk to Don Louse. Pru points out that if he leaves, his father will never forgive him. Beto reiterates that he is not going to give in to Don Louse.
*Marina is trying to get Damiana to wake up when Tori tells her that she opened her eyes, but she can’t seem to talk though she is trying..
*Beto tells Angsty that his father will never accept Marina. He would like to go tell Marina why he hasn’t gone to see her, but doesn’t want to leave his mother; so Angsty volunteers to go talk to Marina. Don Luis shows up and grunts as Angsty leaves. Beto tells Don Louse that he won’t leave until his mother is better.
*Marina cries as she asks her mother to answer her, but Damiana can’t. Tori tells Marina that Damiana can’t move but seems to hear her; so Marina tells her how Doc Mask tended to her all night and that they are going to live with him. Marina notices that Damiana reacts when she feels her get rigid and wonders why Damiana is reacting is such a way.
*Erasmo tells Lino that he should be so down; he should be jumping with joy since Vanesa isn’t getting married. When Lino tells him about his encounter with Su, Erasmo thinks that Zackrat ratted him out, but he isn’t sure. Lino goes after Zackrat.
*Su tells Don Louse that Beto isn’t leaving yet, but it’s up to him to keep him there. Su is willing to find a way to keep Beto there and suggests that Don Louse tell Beto that he will accept Marina. Don Louse doesn’t want to appear weak and give in to everything, but agrees to let Su try whatever she has planned. Su offers to help him in ANY way she can (as she rubs his shoulder). Don Louse then tells Su about Margarito knowing all along where Marina lived; so Su suggests that Don Louse run off Margarito with all his clan…he can put Zackrat in charge.
*Tori notices that Damiana is breathing hard and it could be that she doesn’t want to leave her house. Angsty arrives to give Marina Beto’s message and Marina tells her that Damiana is bad off. Tori thinks someone may have come in and attacked her, but Marina tells him that it’s just his imagination. When Angsty tells Marina about Pru and Beto deciding to leave the ranch, Marina thinks that Pru got sick because of beto leaving; so Beto should concentrate on his mother. She tells Angsty to tell him that if he looks for her, she will be living at Doc Mask’s house.
*Margarito goes to talk to Don Louse and confesses that he has known all along where Marina lives and how he allowed them to live in the house.. He has much respect for Don Louse, but he considers Marina and her mother as family. Margarito feared that Don Louse would throw them out forcefully and assures Don Louse that he will see to it that Marina and Damiana leave the house the next day; he just asks that Don Louse not strike out against Marina. If Don wants to retaliate, Margarito is willing to leave the house and his job.

After she leaves, Tori starts to tell Marina how Angsty gave him candy for some information, but when he sees that Damiana reacts, he stops talking and assures Damiana that he “no longer remembers what that lady asked him about.”
*Lino finds Zackrat and punches him hard sending him to the ground, but Zackrat gets up and fights back. Erasmo arrives and separates them. Afterwards, Su approaches Zackrat and hopes he taught Lino a good lesson.
*Margarito reminds Don Louse that he hates Marina and treated her badly at the fiesta. Don Louse doesn’t hate her; he just doesn’t want her for his son. He would never do anything against Marina or hurt her (yeah, right!). When Margarito asks what he should do, Don Louse tells him he can keep his job and house. After Margarito assures him that he will have Marina out of the house, Don Louse tells him there is no hurry; he doesn’t want anymore problems with his son. Marina and Damiana can stay in the house until they find elsewhere to live.
*Doc Mask calls Don Louse and tells him about Damiana. Doc is sure Don Louse had something to do with it, but Don Louse denies it. Doc doesn’t buy it and tells Don Louse that Damiana is alive. She can’t talk, but when the brain swelling goes down she will be able to say how she got hurt. When Doc suggests that he can make sure Damiana doesn’t recover as long as Don Louse keeps his son away from Marina, Don Louse responds that he doesn’t want to get involved, but Doc insists that he will do for Don Louse now, but Don Louse will have to do for him later.
*Angsty returns to the ranch and tells Beto about Damiana and how Doc Mask tended to her; so Beto rushes off to check on Damiana since he doesn’t trust Doc Mask and Marina must be scared..
*Pru tells Vanesa that Su suggested to Don Louse that he should accept Marina. Vanesa worries about what everyone will say when they find out that Beto left her for a blind girl. Later, Vanesa goes to reproach Su for her suggestion to Don Louse. Su tells her not to worry because the situation won’t last long. Su then tells Vanesa about Lino getting into a fight with Zackrat because Zackrat ratted on her and Lino…and how Lino got the worst of it.
*Lino goes into the kitchen to ask for Vanesa and runs into Beto who is rushing off to see Damiana. After Beto leaves, Su shows up and tells Hortencia that she will tend to Lino. When Lino tells her that he wants her to know how he feels about each other. Su scoffs because she doesn’t care about his feelings and tells him that Vanesa just felt sorry for him and doesn’t want to him anymore. Vanesa is going to do as she says.
*Don Louse tells Zackrat that Damiana is probably going to recover. Zackrat thinks he should leave the ranch for a while, but Don Louse tells him that Doc Mask will keep him informed about Damiana’s progress; so Zackrat can stay put for now.
*Marina is trying to give Damiana something to drink when Tori realizes he hasn’t gone by the cemetery. He leaves to go tell Baldo about Damiana. Marina continues to tend to Damiana and finds a way to communicate with her since Damiana can squeeze her hand. When Marina asks if Damiana wants to go live at Doc Mask’s house, Damiana responds with a “no.” Just then, Beto arrives and checks Damiana. He will give her something, but it will take a couple of days for the swelling to go down.
*Don Louse tells Su that he hasn’t been able to talk to Beto and that he won’t be running Marina off his land. Angsty listens at the door as Don Louse tells Su that he sent Zackrat to give them a little scare, but he didn’t find them there. She also hears Su tell Don Louse that it’ll be a point in his favor when Beto finds out that Don Louse knows where Marina lives, but decided not to throw her out.

Tori seemed to be telling Marina that unconscious Damiana was reacting when she was not. Did I get that right?

Does Damiana's condition count as a coma for the Bingo cards? ;-)
Seems like she will get dehydrated without an IV if she stays this way for a couple days.

That part went right over my head because my Spanish is so bad, and the closed captions are worse.

That makes sense to me.

I remember those scenes that way, too, and even wondering if there was ever something between Don Louse and Damiana. These are little pieces to the puzzle the writers are giving us.

No worries, Anita. What happened to Tori is still very vague. I was thinking that the man Baldo was referring to was Margarito. And IIRC from Don Louse’s first flashback, he and Tori were out in the woods when Tori told him of some place where he could find ducks. Don Louse was the dark haired guy. That’s why I thought the guy who ran away saying it was the devil was young Don Louse. Also in Ep 17, Zackrat mentioned that Tori was hit in the head by a stray bullet. Hopeofully, we’ll get more flashbacks to clarify what really happened.

Brian Mwaura, (although I don't know if you're in Kenya) and anybody else interested, there is an interesting article on the NY Times website about the popularity of Mexican culture, including telenovelas, in Kenya.

"The fusion of Mexican and Kenyan cultures began in the 1980s, as Latin American telenovelas, mostly from Mexico, took over Kenyan airwaves. The rights for these soap operas were cheaper to buy than those for United States shows, so networks snatched them up. Today, business is still booming..."
The Times does have a pay wall but I believe they still permit 10 free articles a month.

Thanks Rgv Chick. I'm enjoying this, but honestly having trouble believing in this LOVE OF MY LIFE business. Sure seems like rampant hormones to me, especially with Lino and Vanessa. Still, I know there is such a thing as love at first sight, so I'll try and be a little less cynical. In the meantime, what fun trying to figure out who Damiana's One Love was.
As for Skanky Su, she's in there pitching but so far Don Luis ain't catching. He's still a puzzle to me. However, the way Prudencia seems to wince every time he touches her, she might not mind if Su took over some of the heavy lifting.

How odd that Don Louse, being the macho he is and living by "don't let the right hand know what the left hand is doing" you'd think he'd take that hook like a shark after a guppy. Is he really loyal to Pru?? It just doesn't go with the rest of his character. If I were Pru, I certainly wouldn't mind if Su took over.

We certainly have several theories about how Tori became a bit soft in the head. Someone posted mentioning a very early scene about Louse and Tori being together and Tori seeming normal (I forgot this one completely.). Is this the same scene that RGV mentioned about ducks? Since Louse consistently says that anyone who thwarts him might "see the devil", my view of the flashback scene of the two younger men, was that Tori was on the ground, having been shot. And that it was Young Louse who shot him accidentally and then stated that he didn't do it, the devil did. This could indicate multiple personality disorder (doubtful) or Louse being self-protective in case Tori survived and might say who shot him; i.e., planting a false memory in Tori.
Did Marina ever tell Beto about the plan to move to Mask's house? Don't think so. And, if she tells Beto this, I doubt it will happen. I'm not ready for scenes of Marina and Damiana living under that maggot's roof! Louse already said he was not turning them out. Hopefully Angustias' eavesdropping will prove fruitful.
I think they are planning a redemption for Louse. He shows occasional signs of humanity. He was VERY upset that Damiana, who saved his precious son, was Marina's mother and thus also being persecuted. He doesn't seem to be jumping at the overt seduction moves of Susana.

I'm not ready for scenes of Marina and Damiana living under that maggot's roof! Louse already said he was not turning them out. Hopefully Angustias' eavesdropping will prove fruitful.
I think they are planning a redemption for Louse. He shows occasional signs of humanity. He was VERY upset that Damiana, who saved his precious son, was Marina's mother and thus also being persecuted. He doesn't seem to be jumping at the overt seduction moves of Susana.

Ep 24: Part 1 Don Diablo Changes His Strategy
*Beto tells Marina that they will need to wait for the swelling to go down. When he asks what happened, Marina doesn’t know. She found everything thrown about and thinks someone may have come in to steal, but nothing is missing. Marina tells Beto that his father knows where they live; so they will have to move to Doc Mask’s house ASAP, but Beto would prefer she go anywhere, but there. Marina thinks that they could go to Baldo’s house; and Beto agrees. Afterwards, they decide to go out and gather some vegetables. When they return, Doc Mask is about to give Damiana an injection to make sure she stays asleep, but Beto stops him and tells him that Damiana has had enough medication. Marina then thanks Doc for all he has done, but Beto will take over the care of her mother. Doc contains his anger and tells Marina that the car is outside ready to be packed so they can go with him. He fumes when Beto tells him Marina will not be going with him; and Marina adds that she now has Beto to defend her. Doc tells Marina that he hopes she doesn’t regret her decision.
*At the ranch, Susana tells Don Louse that she will keep him informed of her progress on her conversations with Beto. Don thanks her for being so supportive and wishes his wife would do the same, but Pru spends her time crying.
*Angsty confronts Don Louse since she knows he sent Zackrat over to Damiana’s house. She again warns him that everything he does to Marina will turn on him. Don Louse reminds Angsty that she works for him. When Angsty asks if he knows who Marina’s mother is, he admits that he just found out it’s Damiana. After Angsty points out that Zackrat almost killed her, Don Louse responds that Zackrat was just defending himself. He then warns Angsty to keep quiet; she’d better not provoke another disagreement between him and his son.
*After Doc Mask leaves, Marina worries because Doc now knows that they are more than friends; so Beto tells her that Doc knew all along that she reacted to light and did nothing to help her. When Marina worries that Doc will no longer help her with her exams, Beto tells her not to worry; she has him and he will protect her even from her father. Just then Baldo arrives. Beto tells him that they need to wait until Damiana can talk and move. Beto then leaves to go tend to his mother.
*Alone with Damiana, Baldo tells her to be the strong woman that she has always been so that she can recover and see that Marina and Beto will be happy. Baldo tells her that at night the moon may shine and during the day the sun (shines), but only her eyes light up his heart (how poetic! My favorite line of the episode.)…he will take care of her. Afterwards, Baldo goes to talk to Marina who tells him that they will have to move out of the house ASAP, but Baldo tells her that Margarito went to tell him that he already told Don Louse where she lives, but Don Louse reacted differently; he is going to allow them to stay there until they find another place to live. Marina is very relieved and then tells Baldo that Beto is going to live independent of his family. He is going back to the capital and they are going with him. Baldo is happy for them; though he might die of sadness if Damiana leaves.
*Angsty prays because of all the secrets she has to keep. As she mentions that she now has to live with what Don Louse did to Marina, Pru overhears her and demands to know what Don Louse did to Marina; so Angsty tells all and warns Pru that her husband will have to deal with the consequences of his actions.
*Doc returns home and Ramona tells him that the room is ready. Doc has a fit and tells her they aren’t coming.
*Beto arrives at the ranch. Margarito tells him how his father is going to allow Marina to stay in the house until she finds elsewhere to live.
*Vanesa asks Hortencia for Yola’s phone number. Su comes in and asks what she is doing; so Vanesa tells her she is asking for the password for the wi-fi. Hortencia backs her up.

She also threatened him that if he tried to see Vanesa, she would make sure that he and his family would be thrown out of the ranch. When Vanesa asks her not to do anything against Lino or his family, Su responds that he’d better not dare look at her.
*Su talks to Beto and pleads with him to try to make amends with his father, but Beto thinks it will be of no use. Just then Don Louse shows up and tells Beto to bring Marina to dinner; he wants to see what it is about her that captivated Beto so much. After Don Louse leaves, Beto is suspicious that Su wants to help him. Su puts on a good show when she tells him that she considers him a son and wants him to be happy.
*Vanesa calls Yola, but Yola tells her to stay away from Lino.
*Beto goes to check on Pru. He tells her he will stay until she feels better. When Angsty enters, Beto leaves; and Pru thanks Angsty for keeping quiet.
*Don Louse calls Doc Mask; so Doc tells him that his son intervened and messed up all his plans. Don Louse responds that he is going to try a new strategy. He will talk to him later.
*Beto talks to Eric and tells him about Damiana and his mom. When Eric asks if he has announced his courtship with Marina, Beto replies he hasn’t.
*Margarito, Lino and Yola arrive to see Damiana. Right behind them is Beto who brings flowers and chocolates for Marina; it’s his way to formally ask her to be his girlfriend. Marina formally accepts.
*Su tells Pru that Don Louse agreed to have Marina come to dinner Pru wonders about Vanesa so Su puts on her show again (I was expecting violins) and tells Pru that what is important is that the family get along. Beto can’t be disinherited because then the family name will not continue. Pru should do everything to make sure her son doesn’t leave; just as she is willing to sacrifice Vanesa’s happiness.
*At Damiana’s, house, everyone apologizes to Beto for what they thought of him. After Tori adds that Beto had better make Marina happy or he will have to answer to him. Beto laughs and assures him that he hasn’t forgotten that Marina asked him to have him checked by a doctor. Tori hopes he can get checked because he does not want to dream about bad things anymore.
*Angsty talks to Vanesa about Lino who must be feeling desperate. Vanesa argues that Lino has no idea what kind of life she is used to. When Angsty asks why she gave him hope, Vanesa replies that her desire to be with him was stronger than her will. Angsty mentions how Beto defends his love for Marina, but Vanesa doesn’t have that kind of courage. Angsty advises that if she continues to do what her mother tells her, she will be very unfortunate.

Marina argues that she can’t leave her mother alone; so Yola volunteers to stay with Damiana. After Beto leaves, Marina still worries about being at the same table with Vanesa and being presented as Beto’s girlfriend. Yola tells her not to worry because Vanesa is crazy in love with Lino. She then asks Marina not to tell anyone.
*Su and Don Louse talk. When Su assures him that Pru will support him, Don Louse worries more about Angsty. Su thinks that when everyone sees that he has accepted Marina, no one will suspect that he wants to hurt her. Don Louse isn’t so sure that Marina will believe him since they have had some tough run ins. Su is sure Beto will convince Marina.
* Erasmo sees Zackrat leaving; so Zackrat explains that he is only leaving for a few days to run an errand for the boss.
*Su goes to tell Vanesa that they will have a guest for dinner. Vanesa is in disbelief that Marina is coming and refuses to go, but Su tells her that she is going and she’d better dress elegantly, but simple. Beto will be able to compare her to Marina and see how different they are.
*Don Louse goes to see Don Mask because there are things that should be discussed in person rather that on the phone. Don Louse explains that he is going to try a new strategy; he is allowing Marina and Damiana to stay where they are. He is also having Marina go to dinner at his house where his son will present her as his girlfriend. Doc is NOT happy.
*Marina still hasn’t decided whether she is going to dinner at the ranch. She wishes her mother could advise her; so she goes to Damiana and asks if she should go…but we won’t find out Damiana’s response until Monday!

Angsty annoys the heck out of me. She's always going on praying to some saint or the Virgin to "DO" something to relieve this burden of secrets she has and keeps adding to. The town priest already told her what to do. He's a better advisor than her unanswered petitions.
Su is up to her hair-pulling ways again. I didn't like that at all.
Do they allow horses on paved roadways? Is there a dedicated lane for them? I can't see Zackrat camping in the woods for even a day. If Don Louse is covering his temporary absence, I bet he'd want a bed in a nice pension that serves three meals a day, next to an all-night cantina with Ninel Conde to sing him to sleep.

Nina, IIRC Vanessa's father is deceased. Su is a widow. She should be looking for a rich husband and leave her daughter alone.
Doris--You are correct. He passed away somewhere between the time she and Pru were pregnant and the 18 anos despues. With her personality, Su probably couldn't find a replacement for herself, hence pimping her daughter out. Although, to give her the benefit of the doubt, she and Pru (mostly Su) pushed the idea of their children growing up to marry since the adults were such close friends.
Alas, he died. She ran through their nest-egg and hence, pushing Vane to nail down Alberto, beginning with sending her to the same city where Beto was studying. (I can't remember if she was also in school there, but it doesn't matter, she was always trying to get into Beto's face and bored that he had to study.)
When Marina and Lino came along in the kids lives, Su panics and thereby, becomes the #1 villaness, who will stop at nothing to tap into the Orcanza bank account to keep up hers and Vane's high standard of living. It all boils down to her social position and the embarrassment in front of her social circle if she loses her ability to keep up--lines which are blurring here and in Mexico.
