Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Miercoles 5/8/19 Episode 41: Thieves

Carlos told Nancy that their lives would be in danger if she couldn't find some way to get El Ciego's image out of the security videos. Nancy told him she couldn't do this. He asked “Couldn't or wouldn't?” and she said that they would have to involve other people and that it would cost. He said that money was no object, then asked her again whether she will do this. Nancy told Carlos that what he was asking for was a serious crime. He said he knew that, but the firm was at stake. Thus he got her to agree. She reminded him that this would cost a lot of money and he said not to worry. Further that she was not to discuss this with anyone, including Alan. She told him not to worry about it. He said he was glad he hired her.

Juan and Fernanda came home and he was not in a good mood. He told his mother about the stripping of his car and he was furious. He screamed out the door at the neighborhood “Thieves! Vandals!” and started ranting about how they needed to move to a better neighborhood. Susanna refused to consider this. Fernanda also objected, saying “This is where we grew up.” Juan said there were too many thieves. She said this could happen anywhere. Juan pointed out that nobody else had bought a new car in their neighborhood and Fernanda said she had to leave because she couldn't continue this conversation. He stopped her on the way out and tried to get her to understand how he felt. He did alright until he used the word “envy.” He offered to see her home and she said “No thanks; I'll call you.” and walked out the door. Susanna gave him an annoyed look. Susanna told Juan she was annoyed with his behavior. She understood him being upset about the car but blaming the neighborhood? Juan told her that it wasn't just the car, what about everything else he gave her and will give her? Thanks to his advancement their lives were improving and could continue to. He told her he was going to look for a better home for them. When he kissed her before going to his room she was still shocked.

Sofia told her mother she had a court date the next day. Camila said she would make coffee for her and left her alone with her documents and folders. Camila brought Sofia her coffee, but she had placed a fork on the saucer rather than a spoon. Sofia tried to get her mother to talk about how she was feeling, but got the same answers as before along with a spiel about how proud she was of her and how she worried about the things Sofia worked on. She then left her alone to continue working, but not before taking back the fork to bring a spoon instead. Sofia looked worried.

The next morning Sofia and Victoria talked at the health club. Sofia was nervous about her case; Victoria said she would win it. They spoke of Ricardo and Sofia said that he had come to see her and he was polite and fine with her. [We all want to know what she really means.] Victoria said that he was a great person and he's going through the worst time of his life; they all had to help him. Sofia then said she had an idea of something to do but would talk about it later. [OK, now we need the details.] She got off her bike, saying she had to prepare her clients for court. Victoria told her to go get Ravelledo and make him pay.

Alonso and Lourdes had breakfast in his (luxurious) dining room. He was concerned about his firm, felt guilty about Alejandra, and felt responsible for his people. Lourdes felt like she wasn't being of any help to him and suggested she go home and give him his space. He assured her he needed to have her with him.

New York (my hometown):

Christina Valero has prepared a presentation for a furniture designer's business for the big boss, Mr Blums. Selling this deal would give her an opportunity for advancement. A female colleague saw that she was nervous and assured her she would do fine. “I'm sure he's not as bad as everyone says” she says of the man [which we all know will mean the exact opposite]. Christina went on her way.

Mexico City:

Sofia and Javier were in the courtroom where the defense claimed that they were accusing his client of homicidio culposo which I think means criminally negligent homicide. Sofia presented copies of statements by patrons that the defendant instructed the waiters that they were not to let anyone leave before paying their bills. Revelledo denied this and Sofia made a plea on behalf of her clients about the loss of their loved ones and those of others. Their friends and family members died due to the defendant's negligence. The defense attorney gave the Nazi defense of his client only doing his job, saying that there was no immient danger at the moment. Sofia said “Don't insult my intelligence. Your client's negligence cost the lives of sixteen people.” She addressed the judge, saying that this can't go unpunished.

New York:

Christina arrived for her appointment only to be told that Mr Blums had not yet come to the office. His secretary got a call that he just finished up a meeting at the Visions Hotel and only had an hour until his next meeting so he requested that Christina meet him there. The secretary gave her the address and she was on her way.

Mexico City:

The defense argued that the fire had begun in the store and he hadn't had time to see its extent. Javier got up and asked to question the defendant rather than have his attorney testify on matters he personally didn't witness. The defendant testified that he went about his business as on any other night. Sofia asked when he was aware of the fire and he said he heard someone scream, followed by smoke. He looked for it and found the fire. Sofia asked why he didn't evacuate the place. The defense tried to object but the judge told the defendant to answer. He said that the fire wasn't yet a threat to the people [who was he kidding?] so he thought it fair for people to pay their bills and leave quickly. Javier turned to the judge and said that during that time they should have been evacuating the location. The defense tried to protest that his client did everything possible, but Javier said to look at the result. The defense attorney said his client was not responsible for any panic that resulted.

Javier accused the defense of attempting to deceive the court. The defense attorney said he was only looking for a fair result. Javier said that the defendant was guilty of negligence and that the building was not in compliance with the civil safety protocols. The defense insisted that they had all the certifications but Javier said that this had to have been the result of bribery because there had been only one emergency exit. All others had been blocked. The defense said that this was all subjective and asked for a psych evaluation of his client to demonstrate his emotional state. Sofia objected [Can someone make out what the rest of this was? I think is was something about drug use]. She asked a rhetorical question of the court and the judge said he was ready for closing statements. The defense said that his client was in a vulnerable emotional state and behaved in a routine manner. That he had intended no harm. Sofia asked the judge to consider the reaction of the patrons of the club. The forensic reports indicated they had died of asphyxiation. Others died of more serious injury. These people had been having a good time without knowing that it would be their last night on earth. All she was asking for is justice.

Nancy went to the police station and came on to a young cop (I think the same one she questioned about El Gringo) to get access to the security videos from the restaurant so she could make a few changes to it. The cop tried explaining to Nancy why this was impossible but she and her red lipstick didn't take no for an answer. She lured him with the promise of money and something else she didn't mention. He finally told her that she would have to have the video back the same night or both of them would be in very serious trouble.

New York:

Christina went up to Mr Blums' suite which had a really impressive view. Without going through all the details, Mr Blums excused himself to “slip into something more comfortable” [Christina must have attended convent school to have missed the hundreds of US films that phrase occurred in]. Blums' assistant – Trevor – departed, leaving Christina alone in the sitting room. Blums came out of the bedroom in his robe, told her to sit down, and took the comfy chair opposite her. He then flipped open his robe, saying “I'm ready to listen.” Christina realized what this was all about, picked up her things, and said she was leaving. He stood up, grabbed her arm, and tried to pull her to the bedroom, along with an insulting remark about Latin women. She freed herself and got out of there. He picked up his phone and summoned Trevor. Harvey Weinstein would have done the same, including throwing the cell phone onto the couch.

Mexico City:

Court reconvened and the judge handed down the sentence of guilty and a term of sixty-four years in prison. His assets were to be liquidated to compensate the affected families.

Juan was checking out real estate sites online when Ricardo came to ask a favor. He wanted to see the video of the restaurant on the day of the shooting. Juan tried to dissuade him from this because of his emotional state, but eventually handed him the flash drive. He put it in Juan's computer, but stopped the playback after a few seconds. He asked to make a copy of it and he would return the original.

Victoria and Adrián met in the library. She was looking up information about getting an international license, inspired by her most recent case. Adrián offered to help. This was his sort of case since he had dealt with an immigrant family being separated. He explained that the exam is difficult, but was sure she could do it. There were online courses to help and he would help her, too.

New York:

Christina returned to her office very upset. She was even angrier after her colleague heard the story and told her she was crazy for not taking advantage of the situation. Christina pointed out that this was sexual harrassment, which was a crime. The other woman said she should think very carefully about what she was going to do. She then left Christina's office.

A little while later Trevor arrived, denying that anything improper was intended. She demanded to know how many other women had gone through this. He closed the door and told her to think and not be stupid . This included implications about how this would affect her residency and her work visa. [I guess it's time Adrián put on his grey pinstriped cape and flew to New York to rescue this damsel in distress.]

Mexico City:

Nancy told Carlos she found a solution to their problem, which she explained to him, including details of what she told their accomplices. She then saw him open the safe in his office and take out a 12-inch stack of cash, which he said he hoped would be sufficient.

That night Juan was outside next to his newly repaired car when Fernanda came home. He wanted to talk to her and she was still upset about what he had said about the neighborhood. He apologized, saying he had been very upset. They made up and he asked her about the communications over her project. She had notes, e-mails, and messages. They went inside to talk more about it.

Nancy met in a park with the cop. “Tell me you got it,” she said.

New York:

Christina was walking home (past Central Park; this is not a good idea) when her cell phone signaled a message. It said she had one last chance and needed to meet the sender the next day at his place.

Thanks UA. Loved your quip about Adrian putting on his gray pin-striped cape and flying to Christina's rescue. Also this:

"The cop tried explaining to Nancy why this was impossible but she and her red lipstick didn't take no for an answer."

Nancy is very persuasive, as is Carlos when he wants her to break the law. It will be interesting to see how this storyline plays out.

Found Sofia's denim-like miniskirt a bit odd for the courtroom. The women lawyers either seem to be in cocktail dresses or super casual. But a short, very tight skirt? When all the male lawyers are in suits and ties? Ah, me. But this is typical.

Still, as someone pointed out, the prosecutor is always appropriately dressed. And scary as hell most of the time.

Thanks for another great recap. And yes, hate to think what Sofia's "great idea" is for lifting Ricardo's spirits. You don't lift someone's spirits when they've lost their fiancée. You have the decency to let them grieve.

I was also shocked at Sofia's attire in the courtroom. It's the sort of thing that makes me wish that all judges and lawyers wore robes like they do in the UK. So.... when I have some time I will have to take out the DVDs of Rumpole of the Bailey.

Carolina's story is both timely and appropriate. Women today should not have to face these sorts of situations. She is not stupid and I am shocked that a gringa colleague would tell her to comply for the sake of advancement. I consider that to be unconscionable. I'm sure that this woman did comply at some point and the pig is moving on to more vulnerable targets. If Adrian wipes the floor with this creep it's about bringing home that point and... impressing Victoria.

Thanks, Urban.

Missed watching last night. A specialist would be able to detect if anything's been deleted from the recording. Nancy and the cop swayed by her lipstick would be better off staging some kind of accident where the recording gets damaged.

I hope the business woman is smart enough to get a lawyer right now. Surely she's not going to meet Harvey alone anywhere ever again.

Urban good recap. Ok this guy was really funny. He sits down, opens his robe(yuck) and wants to hear her pitch. He probly had nothing much to offer. But that nasty remark about latin ladies was low.

I think sofia's mom may be in the early stages of either dementia or Alzheimer's. Sofia is right to worry.

Jaun mom should keep the curtains shut
Cuz if people see that big beautiful fridge They may try and steal it. They
Should probly move.

Carlos has just decided to enjoy his
Swim in The sesspool. And Nancy seems
To be enjoying the sh*t pool too. 2 of
A kind.

Ok good recap Urban, thanks.

UA, just finished watching the recording and reading your stellar recap. The pace really seems to have picked up! In addition to those already mentioned, let me add the line "She lured him with the promise of money and something else she didn't mention" to the list of bons mots.

Re: Trevor the Accomplice, I've never seen anyone point to their head and say "USE IT!" before. Is that a Nueva York thing, or did the writers just make it up? (After all, these are the same folks who gave us, "subtracted his nephews.")

I noticed Nancy took very careful note of the combination Carlos used to get into the safe. This will end in tears...

It is probably a New York thing; being intelligent is very important here. I also think that the three most prominent gringo characters in these scenes are played by native speakers so they might have looked at a script and commented, or perhaps the writers had other help with these scenes. Excellent casting for the role of Blums; he's the same type as the infamous Harvey Weinstein.

I also just realized that my line you quoted is very Film Noir. Mar Zamora would be a great noir femme fatale. She kind of reminds me of Lana Wood.

Gotta get caffeinated.

I don't normally like to comment about people's looks, but, really? What is it about men who look like Harvey, et al, and act so piggish, that makes them think they are desirable? And it's not just the rich and powerful, either.

Anonymous at 3:12PM, you have identified a phenomenon known as Entitlement, which goes together with the commoditization of attractive women which equals the idea that all men -- irrespective of their own appearance -- consider themselves entitled to beautiful women. This is particularly toxic when said ugly trolls are wealthy.

This becomes really sick when combined with the idea that women don't care about what men look like and are taught to look for the bank account rather than the head shot or even the personality. Telenovelas are obviously or subversively challenging this by presenting us with gorgeous actors like Marc Clotet (Adrian) or Maurice Rousellon (Raul) and when singers of every music genre are expected to be gorgeous. Women who are independent and don't need to have their bills paid by a man (to whom they are paying with sex to make that happen) can choose on the basis of personality or looks or both rather than settling for someone who just has or makes more money.

I think guys like Blums don't like this situation and want to take back the patriarchy.
