Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Viernes 5/3/19, Episode 38: More Lies and Less Whispers

Part 1 – Rick lands in jail for a few minutes
*We start up where PASL left off last night. Rick has lost his marbles and decides to take on the whole police force right outside their offices. He’s yelling at the top of his voice that Quiroz is responsible for Ale’s death. Rick bloodies Quiroz’ jaw and Quiroz’s buddies take Rick down. He’s taken into custody and dragged away towards the police station.

*Bobby starts to call—Victoria maybe? He throws the phone down as Juan arrives to chat. He’s puzzled by the condition everyone at the office is in. They’re all so…so, down. Bobby says they are all affected by what happened to Ale and he declares they have to catch those desgraciados. He gets a call. When he gets to Gus’ office Bobby tells him Rick is in trouble.

*They show up at the jail to find Rick behind bars. Why? Why? Rick says he just couldn’t control himself. He was so angry and frustrated over Quiroz letting Ale do what she was doing without telling anyone else. Gus says he knows exactly how he feels, but reminds him that those folks were doing their jobs. Rick insists that if he had known what Ale was up to she wouldn’t have died. Gus gives him more soothing, comforting words—Ale will live on inside him.

*Gus and Bobby go talk to Quiroz. Maybe they can straighten this little episode out. They explain Rick just lost it and was acting on impulse, blaming Quiroz for Ale’s death. Gus and Bobby are sure Rick will come to his senses in a day or two and prosecuting him won’t help anyone. In an impassioned speech, Quiroz swears he wants to find the killers. Gus and Bobby agree they are on the same side.

*Quiroz goes and talks to Rick. Rick tells him to go talk to Ibarra. He no doubt knows more than he’s let on. Quiroz tells Rick that because of the esteem he holds for Alonso, he isn’t going to proceed with a case against him. He also promises to check out other witnesses.

*Gus and Bobby walk Rick out, a free man. Rick wants to go to work. They convince him he needs to go home. Gus volunteers to stay with him.

*Later Bobby goes to see Alonso and tells him about Rick’s “scuffle” with the police force. Alonso is determined to get to the bottom of all this. He goes to check on Rick. Rick is really down in the dumps. He won’t even drink tea. Al reminds him of his law school days when he was unable to pay for his tuition in order to cover his mother’s operation. Al continues, does he remember how he came to him (his professor) and asked if he could just attend his classes until he could resume his studies? And here he is now, they are associates. Al says that’s the guy he wants him to be, determined, looking ahead.

Part 2 – Victoria and Adrián win one for Ale
*Violeta and Aurora are waiting in the cage for their hearing on simple robbery. The “victim,” Andrés Camacho shows up—late. The judge arrives. The proceedings begin.

*Adrián gets up to deliver an opening statement. He declares his clients were accused of a crime they did not commit. In the documents he submitted, it shows an address of a house he stayed in five times during the last year. Vicky picks up the tale. That address was where they found Andres Camacho hiding out with his daughter. It so happens the house belongs to his lover. It’s clear he manipulated the Mexican justice system, using it as a means to take their daughter out of the country without the mother’s permission.

*AC interjects loudly. That’s not true. The judge shushes him. The DA begs the judge to get the proceedings back on track—the theft of the pickup truck. Vicky agrees the hearing is to determine the outcome of a simple theft, but it was used as a pretext to hide a greater crime. Adrián says they have the proof that AC lied in his statement to the authorities.

*The judge asks AC if he has anything to say. Very ceremoniously, he rises—and lies through his teeth. He solemnly recounts that he had asked for a divorce many times but his wife wouldn’t give it to him. They had been fighting all week and she insulted him and failed to be respectful to him. When he got up that morning, the truck was gone. [ed. note: IIRC in AC’s statement he declared that they fought, physically and she grabbed the keys. Ah well, must have been a change in writing staff at a crucial moment.] Violeta watches in disbelief.

*Vicky reiterates what she said earlier to the judge. Mr. Camacho is lying about something that never took place. They have the proof. They have a witness. It’s Conchita, their maid. AC and his lawyer eye each other in surprise. Adrián asks Conchita if she was aware of all the problems AC alluded to. Smiling and excited to be part of the proceedings, Conchita contradicts AC. The couple always got along great. They each had their own cars, but sometimes he loaned his to Violeta. The only time she ever heard an argument between them was when the señora asked why he was traveling for work so much. Vicky, in a sort of aside says he was probably because he was visiting his lover. That riles up AC. He says that has nothing to do with the theft of the truck. He is asked if he would repeat, in his own words, how the truck was stolen. He agrees and repeats what he said before.

*Adrián asks Aurora if she had been there the morning of the supposed theft. Did she observe an argument? She answers no, and that he offered the truck to them to use to go shopping. AC jumps up and pointing at Aurora declares it’s his word against hers. Sitting back down, AC is reminded by Adrián that theft requires the removal of something without the owner’s permission. AC smugly retorts, that there he has it—without permission. Adrián continues, there seems to be no underlying motive for taking the truck. [ed. note IIRC, in his statement to the authorities, AC said his wife wanted to take everything from him and leave him with nothing in a divorce—I guess that meant starting with the truck.] Adrián notes that when AC came in to make his statement, he got his truck back. The DA, who has been left out of most of the proceedings so far, wants back in. She explains that just because AC got his truck back doesn’t mean there was no theft. She says she’s required to follow procedures. The judge decides to call a recess to review the case before rendering a verdict.

*Adrián gives the closing statement eloquently (as in wash, rinse, repeat what has been said earlier). The DA insists the theft of the car has to be resolved. Whether for personal reasons or not, is not the point. The theft must be punished.

*The judge renders his decision. The women go free and AC is charged with making a false statement. According to the law he could spend 1-5 years in prison and be required to pay a hefty fine. The judge orders the papers to be drawn up. AC’s anger and resentment is reaching the boiling point. He shouts to the judge that this is an injustice—he’s the victim. The judge ignores him and leaves. AC lunges at Vicky in order to whack her. Adrián steps in to protect her as the police move in to restrain AC. He’s hauled off yelling they’ll pay for this and yells at Violeta that he hates her.

*Vicky shares the good news with the ladies. She says AC will probably end up in jail. Violeta is fine with that. As soon as the paperwork is done, they’ll take her home to be reunited with Sol. Vicky and Adi turn to each other triumphant. Vicky pauses, places her hand on his arm, he puts his hand on hers as Vicky leans her head on his shoulder.

*Vicky and Adi are present to observe the joyful Mother and Child Reunion. Lots of hugs and we’ll never leave you’s. Vicky and Adi say goodbye to Sol. Violeta thanks them for all they did. They are angels. Adi throws Vicky an adoring glance as they leave.

*Vicky and Adi get back to the office after dark. He says working with her is incredible. She agrees they’re a good team. He was worried about her—because of Ale. He lets her know she can count on him; that he’s there for her. He leans over and gives her a chaste kiss on the temple. Vicky puts her hand up to his shoulder. He leaves and she contemplates.

*A little later, Bobby comes in to see Vicky. They look at each other sadly before she asks him to sit down. She's very depressed. He says he would have given anything to have given her the news in person and not over the phone. Vicky thanks him for being the one that contacted her. Bobby assures her that he and the rest of the Vegans are working hard to find out who's behind all these tragedies. He tells her how Rick is in a pretty bad way and tells her about his scuffle with the police. As he talks, he gets more and more excited. Once he runs out of steam, he takes his leave.

Part 3 – Carlos is BA-ACK!
*Carlos is drinking, but it’s not tea. Unshaven (though how can we tell since it’s his regular “luke”), he sits there as the doorbell and knocks are insistent. He’d prefer not to answer. It’s Nancy. Reluctantly he lets her in. She wants to help him. He can count on her for juarever. Carlos says no one can do anything for him. He’d rather wallow in his pain—it makes him feel good. She tells him the firm is going to rack and ruin without him at the helm. Carlos doesn’t care a fig about the firm. She points out that it was his whole life. Carlos says everything he did, was for HER. Life has no meaning.

*Nancy shares that Alan didn’t cancel the event and intends to open the new offices without him. She doesn’t think he should let Alan do that. Carlos wonders why she cares. It’s that she’s worried about him, worried about her job [ed. note: I think she reversed her priorities for Carlos’ sake.]

*Carlos is not ready to give in. There’s more wallowing to be done. He tells her Alan knows what he’s doing. As his associate, he can make any decision he wants. Nancy wonders if that includes making bad decisions. (She may be getting through to him.) All these people who will be attending the event are ones who will help the firm, but he won’t be there? Carlos says so what? Nancy reminds him that everything he’s done so far is in order to prove they are bigger and better than Vega and he’s so close to achieving that. He shouldn’t hold back now.

*He doesn’t care what happens to the firm. (She didn’t get through.) So she tries to guilt him into coming. Instead, he asks her to leave. He’s heard her out. He wants to be alone. He plops down on the couch and flings one arm over the back in resignation. Nancy asks him to think about it. She pats his hand suggestively and leaves.

*Later, the event is in full swing. All the hoi polloi are in attendance. [ed. note: A lot of extras are making a peso or two tonight. I hope the appetizers are tasty.]  Alan is ecstatic. Sr. Zevala, who bought the software company is there. He wonders where Carlos is. Alan says he’s been looking for Carlos, too. Perhaps he isn’t going to make it. Sr. Zevala thinks it’s strange. Alan explains that Carlos has been going through a lot lately. Alan excuses himself to work the room. He’s  ready to start the formal presentation (with an eye to press coverage). In mid sentence, as Alan is thanking everyone for coming on this special occasion, Carlos makes a grand entrance and finishes his sentence for him. They stand together, proudly in the spotlight, smiling big. [ed. note: Did everyone see that eye-catching little white number Nancy was wearing, as she is beaming at Carlos? Also interesting to note--Rick has good friends and supportive colleagues to help him through his misery. Carlos has no one, he has shut out his cousin and Nancy must force her way in.]

Part 4 – Incidental Scenes >>FF if you wish
*Sofia comes to talk to Alonso about reviewing Rick’s cases that she’s taken on. Al decides there is no need. He’s grateful to her for her attentiveness. She asks about Rick. Al says he’s not doing well at all. He’s been through so much lately—his divorce, having to say good-bye to his children, and now this. Sofia is wide-eyed, as if she hadn’t heard the whole “Rick’s Travails” story. [ed. note – Oh, that’s right, she always looks wide-eyed about everything.] She’s sure Rick has the strength to overcome this, too.

*Lorena and Manuel report to Alonso on the Daddy Dearest case. Al says sometimes one has to be hard on children. He’s glad it was all resolved without complications. He commends them for their work. They are on the fast track to learning the values Vega holds dear. From now on he’ll be giving them new (but simple) cases to give them more experience. Lorena thanks him. Manuel thanks him two or three times—to get his face in the limelight, since he was incidental to the case, though Lorena thinks he was a big help.

*Walking back to his office, one of the police asks Quiroz how he can stand all those Vegans. Quiroz says he can understand their collective feeling—they just lost a companion. Police Buddy says it doesn’t give them the right to act the way they do, so almighty. Quiroz says he gave Rick a pass because he knows exactly how he feels. Still…insists PB. Quiroz has him come in the office and he explains.

*He felt the same way when he lost his brother, killed as a result of an assault. That’s what led him to become a policeman. He wanted to bring the perpetrators to justice. Once in, he realized how many people go through the same emotions. He decided to focus all the anger he had inside to helping others. He hopes Rick will come to reason. He was told this can’t happen again.

*He intends to go talk to Ibarra, but at the same time, keeping the Vegans close. He believes this investigation could lead to something much bigger – organized crime. They could bring to justice more than just those involved in the crimes against the Vegans. [So, all he needs is a mask, a horse named Silver and silver bullets to be my hero.]

I wish Zepeda and the actor who plays Juan would take some acting lessons - they overact so much it's becoming annoying enough for me to stop watching. They are ridiculous! I might watch DZ again if he ever plays a bad guy again. A "galan" he is definitely NOT!

Anon--I'm afraid that taxi has left the train station. DZ seems to be on in something in every Prime Time show lately--or so it seems. Someone must think he has drawing power. I try to ignore him and concentrate on the rest of the company. When it gets hard, I sit and recall his days as Bruno in Sortilegio. That makes me feel a lot better about him.

Ok, gotta get back to work on the recap. Still have a lot to cover.....

Anita, I really really loved this:

"Rick is really down in the dumps. He won’t even drink tea."

Man, what IS IT about tea in these telenovelas!? The culture seems to ascribe magical powers to té de tila. I tried it once, and like Jaime Camil's character in Tontas, it just tasted like water to me. Sure didn't have any calming effect.

So guess we'll just have to count on Gustavo and Alonso's words to work the magic.

Thanks for the recap so far. I'm off to a class in a little bit to try and understand my iPhone better. Technology is intimidating for this old broad.

Thanks, Anita. Fine part 1 Looking forward to part 2. Ric won't even drink tea. Such a cute line.

Juan sounded inane. How could the firm NOT be depressed after what happened.

I have no confidence in Quiroz. He's no idea of the correction outside his door, but if he and Ric make a duo I'm in.

Great, Anita. Looking forward to the other half.

I like the role reversal of Gustavo and Ricardo here; what are friends for? These two and Roberto seem to know what friendship means.

As fr tea, I can't understand the chamomile tea thing. For my ancestors -- and characters on all Masterpiece miniseries -- it's strong black tea and I always have lots of PG Tips on hand. Two bags, two Splenda packets, no milk.

It sounds like Quiroz is getting close to finding out the connexion between Carlos and El Ciego. I hope he survives the discovery because I believe he is an honorable man.

More later, I hope before I have to leave for the Met. Tonight is Götterdämmerung, which will do me in until tomorrow afternoon.

UA, I too found the reversal between Gustavo and Ric compelling too. Nice to see Gus getting stronger. Enjoy the opera.

Thanks, Anita. This was the best part of the episode.

I wasn't expecting this to be resolved until next week. I was expecting the stupid DA to fight more against the two women and for Victoria to have to recommend getting Meghan in from Texas. I thought the maid's behavior was embarrassing, as though she had no appreciation of the seriousness of the situation.

As for the difference between Andres' statement and the testimony, the writers really dropped the ball. That would have been another lie to easily expose. At least they didn't need to call Sol to the stand, but how is that handled in Mexico?

Finally, Andres' attempt to assault Victoria shows who he really is. Meghan would have been his next victim as soon as he got tired of her. Here's hoping that Violeta hires Victoria as her divorce lawyer and takes him to the cleaners. That's what men like this deserve.

Thanks, UA. Good analysis.
Part 3 is up. I added a little more detail to the last two paragraphs of Vicky's story.

Thanks for your recapping,! I’m glad other people agree that DZ is a wooden ,one note actor, I’m fast forwarding anything he has to say,,,
Mi Jhony, oh my Juan. The office is gloomy and sad,..YOU THINK.,!

Thanks again Anita. Loved your quip about Carlos having”more wallowing to done”. I’m enjoying our skanky little Nancy’s assertiveness. Alejandra was too good for Carlos but our been-around- the- block Nancy seems just right.

“More wallowing to be done”. Sorry. Just learning how to use my phone to comment.

Actually, I'd vote for Quiroz to also have a black cape, a flat-brimmed hat, and a black horse named Toronado, like my childhood hero....

I screen-shot that ridiculous dress Nancy wore for a future edition of Slutwear. Can someone put out the call on the two other threads for this so we can get a good collection of them?

Considering that she isn't really a dumb bimbo why is she dressing like this for a corporate event?

I think we can expect to see Alan's blackmailer very soon.

UA--Of course, I'd already forgotten about Alan's blackmailer. How much longer can he keep coming to the trough before the trough is empty. When Carlos finds out, Alan will meet a suspicious end (without getting Carlos getting his hands dirty--or bloody) and the blame falls squarely on El Ciego or El Gringo's gang.

Judy B--Nancy and Carlos are too much alike. They will be butting heads in no time, never mind they aren't both stags. Nancy likes taking charge, being in charge and letting everyone know it. Ditto for Carlos. If she really wants him (and his money and position), she could probably suppress her most assertive nature--but isn't that what Carlos liked about her to begin with?

Anita, fine parts 2 - 4 too. "Carlos is drinking, but it's not tea." -- tee hee hee!

I had hopes for Nancy's clothes when she visited Carlos' home without her cleavage. But then she wears a Tina Turner shimmy dress to the new office opening. Why Nancy why?

Loved Carlos spoiling Alan's moment.

It's a shame the wardrobe people insult females with boobs popping out of shirts or jackets, zippers down one's bottom, revealing blouses, etc. etc

Anita

Great recap. I really enjoy your take on the characters.

Carlos probly don't care about nothin
Or nobody even less than he ever did.
In this state he could turn on El ciego. That should be interesting to see.

DZ is actually a better singer Than an
Actor.

Jaun,or rather the guy that plays him
Does over doin it. A little. But all
Of them seem to be when they start that justice league speech. "We will bring These criminals to justice, they will Pay for their crimes".
And then they die. Or someone they loves die.

More monday

Ah, Nina--you always speak truth to power. You are so right: "The Justice League Speech." They bring the criminals to justice and then they die....or nearly die. We certainly wish it for Callous Carlos.

Thanks, Anita! Lots of gems in this recap, but most have already been mentioned. Let me put in my vote for, "A lot of extras are making a peso or two tonight. I hope the appetizers are tasty."

I haven't seen the epi yet, but it's hard to imagine Nancy topping the peek-a-boob blouse she wore for her job interview at Ibarra.

I love the way the innocence-claiming bad guys always lunge at the lawyers when they lose. If there's an appeal, is that taken into account? "We tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but then you tried to throttle opposing counsel"?

And yay, a backstory for Quiroz! I guess we can keep him.

That dress that Vicky is wearing, is that proper attire for a lawyer in the Mexican court system?. It looks like something she would wear to cocktail party. The female DA always seems to be dressed for business.

More on Vicky—- Did you notice how she always walks crossing one leg over the other. Not so easy to do all the time without thinking about it. Clearly a very sexy way to move. Now that i think about it, it’s similar, sort of to rappers’ walk.
AMOT

ANON.6.52

Models are trained to put one leg in front of the other (you can leave off the swinging butt part).

But lately, all female stars are crossing the sleazy line.

Well, I finally got a good look at Nancy's party dress and, bizarre though it is, I don't think it even makes the top ten in slutwear. Frankly, she just doesn't project sleaze properly. I still think she's an undercover agent.

Remember Leticia from Season 1? Now that girl could vamp. I bet she'd look trashy in footie pajamas.

Did you see the back of it? It practically comes down to her crack. The top is so ordinary, I'm surprised she wasn't jingle-jangling with layers of necklaces. It's how high in front and how low in back. Oh, well, to each his own slutwear. Would you wear this to the Kennedy Center or the Metropolitan Opera?

No way, not even if I were Lorena's age.

The black lace dress Victoria wore reminds me of one I made for myself ages ago for a black tie anniversary party of Playboy. It was black lace over gold lame. Sadly, I don't have it anymore.

BTW, Philippe Jordan is now one of my favorite conductors. He did an amazing job with the Ring.

Ha ha, I outgrew slutwear at about age 17. Thank God there were no cell phones back then.
