I'm
Christopher Mason. They say that money makes the world go around. It
can change the lives of people who had less or who had none. It can
tempt many and lead them to deceptions and crimes. In a world where
upward mobility is increasingly more difficult those who have
succeeded are always looking over their shoulder.
I'm
Candice DeLong. Greed and envy are prime motives for crime and we've
seen lots of it already. And the methods get more creative all the
time.
Mexico
City: Nicolás told Roberto that honesty is the most important
thing, but one should not put one's feelings at unnecessary risk. He
should not use his mother's abandonment as an excuse to reject the
possibility of loving a woman.
Los
Cabos: Sofia and Ricardo went to the courthouse to collect the DNA
test results on their client. They presented the documents and
received a condescending response from the receptionist, saying that
they needed to present these before their client came in for
the test. They told her that the test had been requested before they
were retained but she would not change her mind, saying they needed
to see the judge. Ricardo told her that they were well aware of
local law on this subject and took out his business card.
The nasty
receptionist continued to refuse to hand over the results as someone
else handed results to another person who said “It's about time.
I've been waiting an hour.” This receptionist claimed to never
have heard of Vega and Associates and was dismissive when Ricardo
said that they were from Mexico City. Sofia leaned on her and she
finally relented, saying they would have to wait, just like everyone
else. She got up and walked away.
Now,
who is she protecting or does she just envy a woman with law degree?
Mexico
City: Alonso and Lourdes were having breakfast. He talked about
Miguel and how he reminded him of himself when he had been studying
the law. He asked about Paula and Lourdes explained the problem.
She asked him to talk to Jaime about this and he suggested she come
to the office to do so. He told her he loved her sense of empathy and
desire to help people.
Susanna
liked the new furniture but was concerned at the cost because Juan
had bought so much at once. He told her that their lives had changed
and that she deserved to live like a queen. Now they could have the
party. She asked for some time to plan because she wanted to make
really great food for their guests.
Los
Cabos: Sofia and Ricardo finally received the results and the
answer was Positive. They looked at each other in shock.
Fabián
tried to get his wife to talk to him, but she was still giving him
the cold shoulder. This only became worse when Ricardo and Sofia
arrived with the bad news.
She hit him with the document and called
him names. He continued to deny it. She continued calling him a
liar and then told the lawyers she wanted a divorce. Fabián then
said. “NO! No divorce!” Lorenza left the room. Ricardo advised
Fabián to allow some time. He continued to deny having cheated on
his wife and shouted that he had no idea how that test could be
positive.
Lorenza
went out on the balcony and cried. Fabián went out to talk to her.
She did not want to talk to him. He said this was either a mistake
or a scheme to break them up. He sounded sincere when he repeatedly
told her he loved her. She told him not to come home because she
didn't want their daughter to see or hear them fight. She finally
walked away.
Resorts
like this are always dens of temptation. Lorenza must have witnessed
quite a few steamy scenes both in and out of the jacuzzi. Many
fueled by umbrella drinks, moonlight, and waves crashing against the
shore.
Mexico
City: Roberto nursed his hangover with his dark glasses but that
didn't help when Juan arrived to tell him about the new furniture and
the party. He had never given a party before so he asked Roberto for
help. Roberto said he's putting himself in good hands. He said
first of all that there should be more women than men.
Roberto
is used to planning a different kind of party. I'm not so sure that
is a good idea.
Carlos
handed Alan a file about Michelle's situation and Alan was impressed
with the photo of her. He asked about how Carlos met her and Carlos
asked him why he asks such unimportant questions. Alan tried to get
him to to reconcile from the previous day, but Carlos didn't want to
say more. Alan pointed out that they both had responsibility for the
firm and that he is also dealing with El Ciego's money. If anything
went wrong they were both in trouble. He said that all he was
interested in was protecting what was theirs. Carlos conceded.
Jaime
went to Alonso's office and Alonso and Lourdes told him their
concerns about Paula. They appealed to him as the person who knew
her best. He thanked Lourdes for being such a good friend to Paula
and said he would do what he could.
Roberto
told Gustavo that a good party would cheer him up.
Los
Cabos: Fabián went back into the office continuing to deny that
this child was his, sure that even his lawyers didn't believe him.
Ricardo told him that it was not their job to judge him but to help
him in the best way possible. He said they needed to chill and think
this through thoroughly and calmly. Sofia told him he had to be
completely honest with them and tell them everything. He started by
telling them that he had only seen this woman once and not in any way
that this pregnancy could have happened.
It's
happened before. Improperly supervised DNA tests can lead to
falsified reports when enough money changes hands. Could that
receptionist be in on it?
Mexico
City: Susanna called Fernanda and asked when she was coming
over. She suggested that she stop over right away. Fernanda told her
she'd rather come over when Juan was not there. Susanna told her
not to worry; he wasn't at home.
Los
Cabos: Fabián explained that he only met the woman just over a
year previously when she modeled for their ad campaign.
They were
formally dressed and on the balcony drinking cocktails among other
people doing the same. She made comments such as “To think you own
all this!” and he talked very reasonably about making sure that
everything was comfortable and luxurious for the guests. They both
had at least one drink too many. She became flirtatious and
provocative.
They started kissing and she had removed his shirt.
She then pulled back and took off her dress. He looked at her for a
moment, they kissed, and then he pulled back, saying this could not
go any further. That was it and there had been no contact since
then.
He backtracked, however, saying that she had whipped out a
condom and put it on him before performing oral sex on him. He swore
that no more than that happened. Ricardo asked what happened to the
condom after that. He said it ended up in the garbage but could not
remember throwing it away himself. So she must have. He then looked
as though he was mentally kicking himself.
Mexico
City: Jaime went to see Paula, who was in the garden in her
pajamas. She told him that she felt worse every day. She would get
up in the mornings and only want to go back to sleep. She felt she
had nothing to live for. He reminded her that he was also in pain
and that she had him and Lourdes. They would do all they could. He
embraced her as she cried.
Adrián
handed the sentencing report to Victoria. She looked at it then
noticed a new e-mail came in. It was her bar exam results. She
hesitated and he prompted her to open it. She then opened it and her
expression was serious. He looked at her and then she grinned and
said “I passed!” He grinned saying “I knew it!”
They both
stood up and embraced. Roberto then entered the officeand stopped
short.
Los
Cabos: Fabián admitted he didn't see Ana throw away the used
condom. He therefore could not be sure she had. It then occurred to
him that she used the sperm to get pregnant.
Pregnancy
entrapment is one of the oldest female tricks that doesn't need an
instruction manual. Except this move – if that is what happened –
is one of the most creative ones yet.
Mexico
City: Roberto did a staged clearing of his throat. Adrián and
Victoria separated and Adrián told Roberto he needed to congratulate
Victoria on passing the bar and being able to practice in the US.
Roberto congratulated her sincerely, then said he was there to invite
them to Juan's housewarming party the next day. They accepted.
Roberto slipped out, but remained outside the door to eavesdrop on
Adrián telling Victoria they needed to celebrate her new license.
He was taking her out to dine that night.
Roberto's
moves have done him no good in the game of love. It looks like
Adrián has captured his queen.
Los
Cabos: Ricardo told Fabián that Ana would have needed a
doctor's help if she used the sperm in the condom to get pregnant.
He knew of a doctor who could explain that.
He called Nicolás who
told him that either the woman would need to use it within the hour
or refrigerate it immediately. It would need potassium upon being
thawed before being used for insemination. This was complicated
enough that it was unlikely to have happened on that occasion.
Ricardo explained what Nicolás told him and then asked what happened
afterward. Fabián said she left the room immediately. Ricardo
explained that she could not have done this alone. She had to have
had an accomplice. Fabián wondered why and Ricardo said it was
money. The law requires fathers to provide for their children and
the mothers of those children in proportion to his income. In order
to prove this they would need to investigate all the local clinics.
The
one with the nasty receptionist should be their first stop.
Mexico
City: Juan went to Tatiana's office to invite her to the party.
She wanted to help, virtually begging him.
Los
Cabos: Fabián wanted the lawyers to assure his wife that he was
the victim and he also wanted to make sure that he would not be
required to pay any money to the deceiving woman. Ricardo told him
that would be very complicated if the child has his DNA because the
judge will order that he recognize him. That was why they needed to
find out the entire truth.
Mexico
City: El Cuervo arrived at the hideout to find his boss drinking
as usual. He told him he had information about El Gringo from an
informant. He had him come over. El Ciego gave him a wad of cash
and he went out happy. A goon with a high-powered rifle stood out in
the corridor.
Jaime
arrived at Paula's house with two suitcases. He intended to move in
temporarily to help her. She refused at first, but realized finally
that he needed to heal as well.
Money
can buy a lot of things, but you have to be careful about what you're
selling to get it. You have to be careful that it's legal.
Yes,
indeed. It's obvious that two men here are being looked at for their
money and status and at least one of them has the social
sophistication to see this as a motive. Rather than pursuing
Victoria at the moment Roberto should look to help out his junior
colleague who doesn't see Tatiana's motive. Fabián will need to
worry also because while he never had intercourse with Ana he was
still unfaithful and I don't think Lorenza will take drunkenness as
an excuse. El Cuervo's greed could be his downfall and we can't
forget Téllez, who is still stalking Alan for more hush money.
Until next we meet Behind the Walls of Justice, I'm Christopher
Mason.
