MIRADA #89 IT IS INDEED A "HOT MESS"

Part 1

Hey Patio, have you seen the ad "Only Okay is Not Okay". That's how I feel about this noviazgo of Marina and Doctor Ricky, but I know some of you are on board and the Amoeba Clan is definitely enthusiastic. Mix in Angustias, Doña Encarnación and possibly even Prudencia, and we've got an overload on Team Marina/Ricardo. Frankly I need an anti-depressant to deal with this. Give me a Zoloft and a Zinfandel, bartender. And top it off with a Cymbalta and some Chardonnay. This. Is. Just. Not. Right.

But it looks like that's where it's going.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The opening scene is Muñoz Makes his Move. Yes, that sly hospital director is using Erick as a wedge to get back with Prudencia. He needs her calming advice on how to deal with rebellious son. Chatting in the hospital while waiting for Alberto is not enough. He thinks they should talk further. Elsewhere. Prudencia recognizes this for what it is and says she's not sure that would be prudent. Oh but he really really needs her advice! She appears to relent somewhat.

First step Prudencia. First step down the primrose path. Just sayin'.

And speaking of primrose paths, Baldo is seeking Doña Toolbelt's advice on how to propose formally to Damiana. A bitter-sweet moment since we know Toolbelt has a hankering for Baldo herself. But she steps up as a good pal and helps him plan. After all, she adds bravely, if my daughter (Anita) is happy, then I'm happy.

Ricky and his Mom are discussing the news of his noviazgo with Marina. She's happy. He's happy. Blah blah. She wants another dinner, but Marina is already invited to Pru and Luis' home tonight.

Prudencia, still at the hospital, is now having what the pols call "a frank and honest discussion" with her son. When he calls himself an IDIOT for how he's handled his relationship with Marina...Mom agrees. And makes sure he understands that rejecting Marina's baby was the Absolute Worst Thing he could do. What's more he's got a history of Hot Messes. He's hurt Vanessa. He's hurt Marina. And now he seems to be planning to hurt Lucrecia. Undeterred, Beto states that he's going to ask Marina to be his wife tonight at dinner. He loves her as much as ever.

Meanwhile, Marina, as giddy and blissful as a bride, is gushing to Ricardo about how she'll have more stability with him. [Does this sound romantic to you? Stability? Hey, fine for a sadder but wiser 50-year-old maybe. But young and juicy Marina? Ugh.] They're both giddy, come to think of it. This. Is. Just. So. Wrong.

So let's check in on Vanessa. She's called Angustias to let her know that she's in therapy, is taking yoga, and has a job working with Hilda. Super. Not just gorgeous hair now, but on the path to maturity. Yay! And good thing she's growing up, because when she makes another pass at the vecindad, a very hostile Anita is waiting for her, barring the door so to speak. Vane assures her this is an innocent visit. But if Marina is not at home, please be so kind as to pass this baby gift on to her. Furthermore, she tells a still snotty Anita that she deserves Lino more than Vane. She has always believed in him and supported him. Whereas Vane knows that she's hurt a lot of people, including herself. But she's hoping to grow up and gain some independence.

As luck would have it, leaving the vecindad, she runs into Paulino. Oh boy. Sparks are flying. Our lovely widow admits that she still listens to Lino's songs at night before she goes to sleep. She hopes he has a great future. He wishes her all the happiness in the world. And both look like they want to weep.

But he turns away and when Anita intercepts him and makes it clear she wants him all to herself, he happily smiles and assures her she has his utter devotion.

Ugh. Another "stable" mismatched couple.

MIRADA #89 IT IS INDEED A "HOT MESS"
Part 2

Wow. Speaking of mismatched couples--next scene is of Hilda (with a huge ring the size of San Diego), crunching crackers, and Susana, looking dyspeptic and greedy. Chooch Mooch is proposing the two of them go on a trip to Europe (guess who would pay for that?) No can do. Hilda is too busy with her business although Vanessa is a great help. And a smart cookie! [ bien abusada] While Hilda is off to tell her cook to expand dinner [echar más agua a los frijoles] so Susana can stay, Chooch corners Vanessa to coach her on getting the maximum inheritance. Vane is reluctant to insist on anything, so Mom volunteers to join the notary meeting next Friday to insist her daughter gets her due. Vane looks nauseous.

How are things going at the Big House? Well, Luis is all Epale! and enthusiastic, sure that his two kids are going to reconcile tonight at dinner. Frosty look from Angustias. Amusement from Pru. Angustias has prepared a tasty dish, but not for Luis (your diet, y'know). And Marina us keeping her emotional distance. He calls her Marinita. MARINA! she corrects. He offers drinks. She refuses. (But you were sucking them down at the medico fiesta, he chuckles.) Another fail. And then the door opens and Beto arrives. Looking about as unattractive as I've ever seen him. Too tight blue jacket. Too tight dull brown shirt. Too tight black pants. Big clunky feet sticking out underneath too tight black pants. A total fashion disaster. As were all his attempts to cozy up to Marina. Talk to her one on one. And take her home. Before she leaves though, she drops this little bomb: You need to know that today I accepted becoming Ricardo's novia. Houston, we've got a problem. This. Is. Just. Not. Right.

MIRADA #89 IT IS INDEED A "HOT MESS"

Part 3

And that's what Beto thinks. "But you love me!" he protests. -That part of my life is over, Marina assures him. I feel very comfortable in Ricardo's arms. And he WANTS to be my baby's father.

Okay. We know that Andy is happy. And evidently everyone in the vecindad is too. Ricardo and Mama Encarnación have arrived and Amoeba Clan Plus Two are toasting the noviazgo. Mama E. is hoping they marry within the year and produce a slew of grandbabies.

Yeah, nothing says "rampant fertility" like a Stable and Comfortable Relationship.

Beto and Erick are in the apartment debriefing the disastrous evening. Beto is still protesting that Marina loves him but Erick is musing that maybe she's better off with Bazán. (Did you talk to him Andy?) The doorbell rings and Lucrecia arrives in a form-fitting top that shows off her best assets. And she's loaded for bear, letting Beto know she's aware of the kiss but it doesn't matter because her love for him is SO GREAT, she can get past anything.

Can Lino? Well, he seems to be wavering when he talks to Marina. He's noticing that Vanessa is more "centrada", "ubicada" [mature and grounded] and when he sees her, he just wants to hug and kiss her. Marina pours cold water on that! You guys are so impulsive. That's how you hurt us. Promising love you can't deliver when push comes to shove. He vows to stand by Anita, even though knowing Vanessa is "free" makes that hard.

As the festivities in the vecindad wind up, Marina follows Ricardo to tell him that Beto showed up at the family dinner tonight. But she made it clear to him that the only man she wants to build a romantic future with is Bazán. Sweet romantic music swells. This. Is. Just. So. Wrong.

MIRADA #89 THIS IS INDEED A "HOT MESS"

Part 4

Lucrecia is still working her angle. She not only saw the kiss, she saw the resounding slap [bofetada] that Marina gave him. It's clear that Marina doesn't love him. Only Lucrecia's noble, encompassing love is worthy of dear Beto. And every time he tries to wiggle out of the relationship...as in, "I'm not worthy of you, I don't deserve your forgiveness..I failed you"...Lu brushes that aside and starts laying on the kisses and hugs. Poor guy doesn't stand a chance. Spin Spider Spin!

Fortunately we're spared any more of that. Next day at the hospital, Vane is cruising the halls (why?)and she and Beto commiserate. They've both been dumped! Again! But our newly mature and grounded Vanessa asks him if he knows anybody in the music business that might be able to help Lino in his career. -He really is talented. If he could just get a boost from somebody in the business. Turns out that Beto has an old friend who can do just that. He gives Vane his contact number and she's off to do a good and noble deed.

Vane's not the only one cruising the halls. Margarito is reporting in for his surgery. Lino, Yola and Marina are with him. Erick pops up and gains points with Yola by promising to find Marg a super room with a discount. Glare from Lino. Big Warm Smile from Yola.

Uh-oh. Ricardo and Alberto also meet in the hallway. Ricardo warns him off. We're novios now! Beto is unimpressed. -One never forgets one's first love. -So what? All I want is for her to be happy with me,snarls Ricardo.

Happy? Did anyone mention "happy"? All I heard was "stable". And "comfortable". This. Is. Just. Not. Right.

And speaking of "not right", we now see Lucrecia with Doc Sotero in his hospital room where he's scarfing down food. The room seems dark and bleak. Like everything surrounding this monster. And Lucrecia is distancing herself from the surgery project. -From now on, you'll deal exclusively with my father. And stay in your room. Don't go out in the corridor. Only the assigned nurse will care for you. Keep everything on the QT. He agrees to everything.

MIRADA #89 THIS IS INDEED A "HOT MESS"

Final Part

We've got a set up for Hospital Horror. Marina is planning to spend all night there with Yola watching Margarito sleep. (I do not understand the necessity of this but nobody asked me.)Turns out Doc Sotero is very near by. So when Marina goes off to get Yola a Valerian tea to help her relax, she actually sees Sotero from a distance. He's cruising the halls even though he was told not to. She doesn't recognize him, never having seen him in the complete mask. But she senses that something is wrong and decides to follow him, asking if he needs help. He dashes through some doors and hides in a sleeping patient's room. Once back in his own room, he berates himself for being so stupid. Couldn't agree more!

More stupidity: Lucrecia and Papa Zamudio are gossiping. She's sharing that Dr. Bazán is now "novios" with his receptionist. -I told you that gal knows how to get what she wants! he crows. But I'm happy for you. Now she's not a threat to you and Beto. She was never a threat! BETO LOVES ME! Lucreepy insists. There's some more kvetching about all the secrecy she's demanding for her patient, but enough of that.

So let's zero in on Ricky and his Mommy. They seem like a better couple than Ricky and Marina. But that's just me. She's wanting him to go out and buy an engagement ring right away. Nail the girl down!

Exactly what Baldo is thinking. Doña Chole volunteers to go along with him to pick out the ring he wants to give Dam, and the latter, hearing all the whispering going on between those two, looks cranky and suspicious. No matter that previously, all her focus was on Margarito and prayers for his safety during surgery.

Last little bit: Vanessa is meeting with Waldo, friend of Beto, who might be able to give Lino a leg up. He agrees to visit the cantina where Paulino is singing. And if he likes what he hears, well then....Vanessa is being super charming and persuasive and only asks that Waldo not mention her name.

Okay. Do we see Waldo as a possible love interest for the newly mature and grounded Vanessa? I'm not enthused. But maybe we could palm him off on Anita.

Speak up Patio. And let me know what you think of our current Hot Mess. But Something. Is. Just. Not. Right.

MIRADA

JudyB, all I can say is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I can’t tell you enough how I enjoy your recaps despite the spiraling of every “noviasgo” I was rooting for…very, very depressing! And you and I have the same sentiments regarding the “Hot Mess” so I am just going to “ditto” what you have already expressed so adeptly.

Frankly I need an anti-depressant to deal with this. Give me a Zoloft and a Zinfandel, bartender. And top it off with a Cymbalta and some Chardonnay. This. Is. Just. Not. Right. And depending on what the bartender looks like, I’ll have him too :-)

Marina, as giddy and blissful as a bride, is gushing to Ricardo about how she'll have more stability with him. [Does this sound romantic to you? Stability? Hey, fine for a sadder but wiser 50-year-old maybe. But young and juicy Marina? Ugh.] This was like hearing fingernails being scratched on chalkboard…STOP! IT!

[Lino & Anita] Ugh. Another "stable" mismatched couple. More fingernails scratching that darned chalkboard…make it a double, bartender!

Thank you, again, JudyB, I got through reading all the sordid events only because I wanted to read your “sides” which were the only entertaining thing about this episode. And yes, I have seen the “Okay is not okay” commercials…perfect for this TN where everything IS JUST NOT RIGHT! Oh…wait, the only thing I was able to laugh at during the episode was seeing the Masked Monster in his lavender hospital robe. Too funny!

Thanks Chickie. So glad you're with me on the Zoloft/Zinfandel/Cymbalta/Chardonnay way of dealing with this Hot Mess. The bartender is all yours.* But I love the way you think lady!

PS Have you ever heard Reba singing "I'll have what she's having" about a hot guy she sees dancing with a gal at a bar. It's got great lyrics and I think you'd love it. Check it out.

*I haven't got a single hormone left at this point in my life.

Great recap, JudyB! My favorite part was “with a ring the size of San Diego”

I’m always Team Beto and never Team Ricardo, however, Beto was really pushing it in this episode and not helping his case with Marina at all. He did have a point with the “first love” thing but isn’t there a saying that being someone’s “last” is the most important when it comes to love and relationships? Obviously he’s trying to win Marina back and be her last but again he’s not helping himself as of right now. I still don’t think Marina and Ric have any chemistry. Even though they are officially dating now, there was nothing really exciting leading up to Marina accepting to be his girlfriend. Whatever happens I’m just hoping that Marina eventually stops calling Beto “doctor” and “usted”.

The conversation between Lu and her father (“Beto loves me”) was dumb. I honestly don’t know which father is worse: Luis, Doc Z or Muñoz.

Very close call with Doc Mask and Marina but obviously the writers aren’t going to kill the suspense that quickly.

I’m curious to find out if Waldo will be able to help Lino. Then Lino would essentially owe his career to Vanessa. How convenient haha

MIRADA

Thank you for another snarktastic recap, Judy! And the title is perfect!!!

More antler bashing today. Again. Pfffft!
I'm too tired to type much, but it looks like all the current pairings are just ... meh.
And exactly why is Beto's shirt so tight? Especially in the upper sleeve? QTH? Biceps showoff? I noticed it and was glad to see you did, too, Judy.

Encarnación seems awfully involved up in her son's life. More than normal perhaps? Does he have no friends? Did his ex get custody of them all? Inquiring minds want to know.

Ramona really is a nice looking woman now that the awful hair is gone and we can see her face.

I want Doc Mask to either die in surgery from that heart condition, or come out looking so "hawt" that Lucreepy falls madly in love with him. Whatevs.....neither will happen, but a girl can wish.

I forgot MIRADA again....whoops

MIRADA

Thank you, JudyB! It is a hot mess but DON'T DESPAIR!

As captain of Team Ricky, recently renamed from Team Anybody-but-Beto, I have been waiting for the swelling romantic music and hot kisses with Marina. I was disappointed. In fact, I was surprised to read in your recap "Sweet romantic music swells." It must have been a small swell, I completely missed it. I would say the kisses were more than tepid, but definitely not Vanesa-Lino hot. Anyway, my team did not score today.    :-)

Yeah, nothing says "rampant fertility" like a Stable and Comfortable Relationship. Um, well, um...

Vanesa did impress. Mature, serious woman, hard worker, anonymous doer of good deeds, willing to let go of a love who has moved on... Wow! Momma Chucha better watch out, our little Vanis might just toss her out on her bum before heading out to volunteer at the orphanage.

Rapunzel looked really good tonight. I think we can take it for granted that she doesn't kill after mating, so I think Erick is right, love the one you're with and enjoy the ride. Just don't ask too many questions, try not to tick her off, and sleep with one eye open.

"Do we see Waldo as a possible love interest for the newly mature and grounded Vanessa?" No, we see long time friend and former fiancé Beto as a love interest. Love, or something like love, is better the second time around.

andy

MIRADA

"Love, or something like love, is better the second time around." (Warning: does not apply to Beto with Marina.)

Thank you Judy and Doris for mentioning the tight and unattractive clothes the guys were wearing. I don't pay an awful lot of attention to this sort of thing but tonight it just jumped out at me it was so bad.

andy

MIRADA

Hah! I see the natives are restless tonight and darned opinionated too. Just the way I like 'em.

Let's start with TF. Glad you liked my shoutout to Hilda's honkalicious huge ring. I don't usually notice visuals (I count on Mely and Doris for that). But I kept on worrying that Hilda was going to gouge her eye out with it. Now if it were Susana's eye....) And I'm more than happy that you're on Team Beto. We need numbers! We need heft! And your "last love" is encouraging also. As long as it's not weeny wee Ricardo. For the love of Mike, not Ricardo!

Doris...Yes, yes, yes, the antler-bashing is getting tedious. Don't these guys ever attend patients? Must they always cruise the hallways sniping at each other? But on Doña Encarnación's involvement with Ricardo's life, I think that may be normal in Hispanic society. Okay. I'm no expert. I'm going on endless telenovelas, but also the input of my Colombian friend who says it's not only normal to be involved in your adult children's lives, it's ESSENTIAL. A good mother continues advising, nagging and pushing no matter how old they are. She finds my attitude of "They're adults. You have to let them make their own mistakes and learn their own lessons." as so so wrong. After a rather testy discussion one night over drinks and dinner, she informed me that she thinks we have Cultural Differences. Sooo...probably my friend would find Mama E.'s meddling and pushing quite quite okay.

Andy...I'm trying to be mad at you, but you always crack my up with your comments. So it's hard. But honestly, I DID hear romantic, tinkling music as Marina and Ricky talked in the vecindad. But I was listening for it. It's always a bad sign when a couple you want together loses their theme song. And an even worse sign when a couple you don't want together has one. And I heard music tonight. Tepid maybe more than swelling. In fact I don't see a future for much swelling in their relationship. Oh, forget I said that.

I am intrigued by your intuition that Beto and Once More Vanessa might end up together. Well, they've got Stable and Comfortable going on. If it works for Marina and Wee Ricky, it might work for them. And I loved your advice on Lucrecia. See, that's why it's hard to stay mad at you. But I'll keep trying.

Oh and a couple of P.S.'s...

TF...Honestly, I don't think we have to keep putting in MIRADA since it's only the one show now. But tradition is tradition. However, you will not be kept after school if you forget.

Andy... Of course you noticed the clothes tonight because the costume people wanted you to. I'm sure they wanted Beto to appear as unappealing as possible. Actually the duds Marina wore to the family dinner were unfortunate also. That wine-red blusa and matronly print jacket did nothing for her. Bring back the red dress and the upswept hairdo! And the passion while you're at it.

Thanks to the costumers, we just saw two tired young adults on the last weary mile of their relationship. Okay. We get it.

Bartender, where the hell is that Zoloft and Zinfandel?

MIRADA

Judy, loved the theme “This. Is. Just. Not. Right”. Combined with the "Hot Mess" title, you created a fun, thoughtful and wise summary.

“Give me a Zoloft and a Zinfandel, bartender. And top it off with a Cymbalta and some Chardonnay. This. Is. Just. Not. Right”. No, it isn’t. But this recap was Just Right.

So many excellent lines but I'm going to note your always wonderful vocabulary: "smart cookie! [ bien abusada", "expand dinner [echar más agua a los frijoles" and "centrada", "ubicada" [mature and grounded]".

Thank you for devoting so much time and energy on these superb recaps. You are very appreciated and admired here.

Diana

Ok, gotta Rest. Thank you JudyB. You
Been Typin like you downin that bigO glass Zinfandel and zoloft. You go girl. And thank you.

.....with the tight shirt.

MIRADA

Hey Diana, I only devote time and energy to these recaps because I love our lively, funny Patio. And you are especially loved and appreciated because you're not even watching this. Just joining in to support the rambunctious Patio and a clinically depressed recapper ("it's just a story, just a story!') We always love it when you're around.

Nina...I can tell you're as emotionally involved as I am. Very sensitive comment that Beto's tight shirt is indicative of "a heart about to burst for Marina." And I had to laugh at "Yeah, they should be together, I want them together damit". I like a woman who speaks her mind. Finally you've got me back feeling that good old Detroit music..."Let's get it on, aah baby let's get it on." I refuse to let that be Doc Mask's theme song. Way too good for him. But man, that's going to be playing in my head all night. Better than Zoloft and Zinfandel. Thanks kiddo.

"Bartender, where the hell is that Zoloft and Zinfandel?"
Aaand, our barman Erick will be serving us all up enseguida!

Marina better not go roll in the hay with Bazán. It would probably go against the telenovela rules.

MIRADA

Judy, first let me echo Diana's comment "But this recap was Just Right."

But it's a good thing we converse through the internet. If in person you might just hit me. I'm not trying to pick fights, but honestly I thought Marina's 'wine-red blusa and matronly print jacket', especially the jacket, were very nice and certainly not matronly. I thought it was a good, different look for her.

I even just now went to the DVR to take another look (and coincidentally briefly saw Claudia Martín in a 'La Rosa de Guadalupe' episode).
Marina looked good, quite pretty, and quite confident talking to Don Louse. (I do enjoy his low growl every time Angustias pulls his chain.)

andy

Thank you JudyB. I feel I should send you flowers or See’s candy or something to show how grateful I am every day for your fine efforts and dedication!

I wanted to comment that way back when we first met Erick I could swear he expressed a desire to have a beach drink stand, not be a beach bum. Small difference but an important one

Doc Barzan was so much more appealing g in La Candidata. He is doing a great job of just missing the mark as a novio. Those kisses s were pitiful

Doc Mask in the deserted hallway was creepy. But if I remember correctly Marina has never seen him, right? As long as he doesn’t talk he is ok

I accidentally deleted Wednesday’s recording. Could go to UNI but won’t. Too depressing

Mely

MIRADA

Good Morning dear Patio. Another pleasant day here in the midlands. Boy, temperature and humidity sure make a difference in my energy level.

Doris...Wouldn't it be fun if Erick were our own personal bartender!? He looks like he has a great sense of humor and the gift of gab. And maybe he could make up a clever name for our Zoloft/Zinfandel cocktail. Perhaps not as poetic as Morena de Fuego, but something snappy anyway.

Andy, Andy, I would NEVER hit you, nevah, amigo. When we disagreed, I would simply smile and with great wisdom murmur "Individual Differences". In the early years of our marriage, when my husband and I would tangle over different points of view (and of course I was sure MINE was right) he would intone "Individual differences". Since he was a professor, the statement had just the right ring of intellectual detachment to be plausible. Definitely pours oil on troubled waters.

Ms. Mely...Wow, sweet! I'll definitely accept flowers and See candies. Let me know when you want my shipping address. LOL. I did have to look up See candies, because although I've never seen them in Ohio, evidently--at least according to Wikipedia, they can be had in our airports. And I think your memory is correct; Erick did mention something about dreaming of a beach drink stand. Not quite on a par with being an emergency room doc, but sometimes a good stiff drink CAN feel like a lifesaver. I sure needed one last night.

Did not realize Doc Bazán was in la Candidata. I only watched a few episodes of that. Now the question is: Do the writers want him to appeal to us as Marina's next husband and Rafa's stepfather? Or are we supposed to be on Team Beto? It's really up for grabs right now.

Stay out of trouble, everybody, until this afternoon when we get gather once again in the virtual CarayCaray family room to watch another episode of Mirada together. And no punching each other out!

Good Late Morning, Patiomates!

It sure is relaxing to come in after early morning chores and just read through such delightful and engaging comments.Thank you so much for making my day brighter!

Andy. if JudyB doesn't hit you, I will do the honors, but don't worry, it'll just be a slap on the head like Yola gave to the two numbnuts. ...and you do know I'm j/k, right :-)

"MIRADA":

RGV Chick: Yikes! What caused the escalation between Andy & Judy ?

Judy: If I'm Vanessa. I might want to get out of Mexico ASAP!

OT

Steve: Relax, Steve, we were just kidding. No problems.

And you're not Vanesa, so don't worry about that either.

andy

MIRADA #90 SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE JUST MAKE ME TIRED

Part 1

Hola Patio. Your Crankypants Reporter checking in here. Have to come clean...I just found the machinations and manipulations of our Mirada gang a little annoying today. Maybe I just need more drugs. But throughout a lot of the episode, I wanted to yell OH JUST STOP IT! Did you feel that way too? If so, we can commiserate together. If you got a different vibe, maybe you can straighten me out.

We begin with Vane and Hilda. Who are still adorable by the way. No problem with these two. They're planning on going to the notary tomorrow to sort out the inheritance. But Vane's plan to give Lino's career a boost seems to have hit a snag. Waldo hears him singing his usual dirge and is impressed with the lyrics, if less so with Lino's voice. But he doesn't work for free. If he represents him, he wants half of the pittance Lino is now making in the bar. Lino, of course, can't spare that much, so the whole scheme falls through. Too bad, quips Waldo. I could have made you famous.

Back to the hospital where Marina and Ricardo are all giggly and giddy and oh boy we're novios! But then, when Marina finally heads to her desk, Rita gives her the hot gossip about the mystery patient in the private corridor. The nurses think it may be some famous person in for some secret plastic surgery with world-renowned Zamudio. Marina wonders if this might be the strange, troubling figure she saw in the hallway last night.

Damiana is paying a visit to Margarito and discussing her discomfort, knowing that Baldomero is about to formally propose marriage. As Marg listens, she shares that she once dreamed of a white wedding and all that. But it was Margarito she was dreaming of. Of course Baldo is right outside the door and slinks away heartbroken. And Marg apologizes for not realizing sooner that Dam cared for him. Okay. I'm trying really hard to be interested in these two. But I'm not. Bartender! Another tequila and Tramadol and make it a double!

Erick arrives at the vecindad to escort Yola to the hospital to see Marg. Gets in some cute flirting while he's at it. She's charmed. He's getting traction.

Vane and Waldo meet. He explains the problem and intuits that lovely Vanessa has inspired Lino's doleful lyrics. She says "no". We know "yes". And she forks over some money so that Waldo can pretend to promote Lino for free.

Zip zip. Now we're at the notary's office where Susana is parked like a third wheel. And Hilda makes sure she knows it. (Alright, it's official. I'm totally in love with this outspoken lady.) Who by the way is wearing another humongous ring. This one is the size of Houston.

Notary announces to Hilda, Vanessa, and of course Mom Chucha that Vane will receive half of everything...money, business assets etc. All fine with Hilda who sees her Vane like a daughter. Susana smiles like the greedy vampire she is. But coos that this in no way consoles her daughter for the loss of her beloved husband. OH JUST STOP IT!

MIRADA #90 SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE JUST MAKE ME TIRED

Part 2

Doleful and depressed Baldo is back at the vecindad being consoled by Doña Chole. And Prudencia is at the hospital being discreetly pursued by Muñoz. Whom we'll refer to from now on as Fernando. Things are getting intimate. At least they might. But first Papa Muñoz has to scrap again with Erick who's walking down the hall with Yola. Another of your "amigas" sneers Papa. Where did you find HER? Yola glares and lips off. Erick defends her. And Prudencia totally takes the steam out of Fernando's pants when she signals that Yola is her daughter's best friend. Fernando immediately apologizes. At any rate, my issue is with my son. Not you. Checkmate.

Prudencia and Fernando take to his office to continue her wise advice about parenting. She suggests he listen and support, rather than decrying the fact that Erick wants to do something half-assed like running a restaurant. He's not sure he can do that, but he sure wants to win some points in Prudencia's books. So we shall see.

Oh my, I feel some weariness coming on. Beto is sprinting down the hall, wanting to make sure that Marina didn't think he talked Vanessa into coming to the vecindad with a present. And he also wants her to know he's planning to break up with Lucrecia. Guess who pops up then? El doctor Zamudio who wants to know what their chat is about. "A mutual acquaintance" fibs Beto. "Margarito is in the hospital for surgery and we're both concerned."

MUSIC ALERT. ATTENTION. CALLING ANDY. Yola and Erick are discussing why his dad thinks he's a total screwup, but he switches the conversation to "I know you like me and you're just using your studies to keep me at arm's length. She smiles. He smiles. Tinkly romantic music plays in the background. The same music that played for Marina and Ricardo! Seriously. This means something. Bartender! Another round!

This section ends with Rita and her sheet-changing pal Rocio planning to sneak in to get a look at the mystery patient. Marina tags along but doesn't go in. Dum de dum dum.

MIRADA #90 SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE JUST MAKE ME TIRED

Part 3

Erick is now in Marg's room seriously pitching to become his future father-in-law's best bud. He'll learn the physical therapy routine so he can help Margarito do rehab for free. And get him back to the ranch and the work he loves faster. Not sure if he scored points with Marg, but he's definitely getting in with Yola.

Too bad that elsewhere in the hospital, Erasmo is scouring the corridors, questioning the nurses to see if he can get help booting rival Erick into the outer circle of Hell. Turns out there's one especially bitter nurse who's willing to help him.

I'm feeling in need of a nap. Bartender! Brew me an espresso. A double! I've still got work to do.

The girls have gotten in to see the Mystery Patient. And it's no telenovela star. Just gruesome, charred and broiled Doc Sotero. Zamudio catches them at it and shoos them off, with a special glare at Marina, loitering in the hallway.

Whoa! Luis has barged into the vecindad again, banging on the table, flipping the lightbulb hanging from the ceiling and attempting to suborn Toribo into helping him reconcile with Marina-- and get his hairy paws on little Rafa. Nothing doing. Toribio informs him he would never sell out his principita for his lousy dinero. And what's more, what has money ever done for you? You've had it all your life and you've never been happy!

That sets off Luis good and proper. Roaring that he's going to see his grandbaby no matter what, he charges into the bedroom, only to find that indeed Rafa is not there. Just as Toribio told him. Quick change. "Sorry I lost my temper, but if you'll help me, I can be very generous," mutters Luis.

MIRADA #90 SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE JUST MAKE ME TIRED

Part 4

Toribio continues schooling Luis. "You can't buy your daughter's affection nor your grandson's. One day you'll be all alone. With your money. And nothing else." Is Luis listening? Probably not. But he kisses Toribio's hand and makes his humble exit.

While all this was going on, turns out Prudencia and Fernando are still talking. He can't believe that HER son has made any mistakes. Why he's one of the best doctors in the hospital. Pru assures him that Beto's mistakes are in Life. And they're legion. Well Fernando has made mistakes also. He should never have let Prudencia go. She reminds him that she fell in love with Luis. But also admits that the marriage is on rocky ground now. -So why not separate? -I was raised to think that marriage is forever. -But times have changed. At any rate, I'll always be here to listen and support. As a friend only if that's what you want. Riiiiight. We know Fernando has other plans.

Are Fernando and Prudencia end game after Luis' adultery comes to light? Y'know, I like Pru but I don't really care. Where the hell is that bartender?

Back to young love. Erick and Yola. He wants to take her for a cappuccino. She wants him to save his money. He's chuffed that she's not treating him like a bank, the way other women have. Surely she'll kiss him now! Nopis. You'll just have to wait! And off she scoots. He smiles that goofy smile of his and looks seriously smitten.

Tiresome Beto (yes, I'm on Team Beto but I'm thinking of quitting) is now asking Mama Prudencia for help in winning back Marina. '-No. I'm staying out of it,' retorts Mom. 'And forgive me, but I think she's better off with Dr. Bazán. Harsh.

I think someone's been reading her Tough Love book again.

Marina is back in the office with Ricardo, who's hovering around her nervously like some Mama Bird. She thinks Isauro Sotero might be the mystery patient. Guess who's listening? Ramona the cleaning lady, that's who. Well, this certainly doesn't bode well. Yawn.

MIRADA #90 SOMETIMES THESE PEOPLE JUST MAKE ME TIRED

Final part

Zamudio is checking to see if Sotero was bothered by those intrusive nurses. Not exactly. But should he change rooms? Or hospitals? Nope. Zamudio will just be tougher about staff following the privacy rules.

Back in Bazán's office, he's decided he and Marina should take the afternoon off and forget about this Sotero fear of hers. Let's take Rafa to the park. Good plan but it will be interrupted by the arrival of Luis to continue his dogged Pursuit of Reconciliation.

First though he has to grill Prudencia. -Why are you here? -To check on Margarito -Oh yeah, I'm paying for the surgery, but nobody bothers to tell me when it is! But if that's the reason, why were you in Muñoz' office? Don't tell me it's "just a coffee"! That guy's a widower now!

But anyway, come with me! Help me repair this relationship with Marina. Good wife Prudencia trails along and attempts to do just that.

Hold on. You may be dying to know how that goes but first we have to segue to Lino and pinched little Anita. They're at the hospital to visit Marg too. But he gets a call from Waldo. Finds out he's going to get promoted in his career for free and is over the moon happy. Perfectly willing to believe Waldo is doing it because Lino is So Talented. Right. Onwards.

Marina is trying to fend off her parents with the "I'm busy working" but Ricardo suggests she listen and gives them privacy to do so. (Okay, wee Ricardo won some points with me there. I'm wavering Andy! I'm wavering! Might just be the alcohol talking though.)

Luis explains that he's trying correct his past mistakes as he did with Toribio. -You're only doing it to get access to Rafa," snaps Marina. Luis plows on. -I was wrong to reject you, wrong to oppose your marriage to Beto, but what I'll never forgive myself for is delivering you into the hands of that charred doctor.

-Enough!

Prudencia intervenes. It's a big thing that Luis is admitting to his mistakes.

-Is there any chance you might reconcile with Beto? continues Luis.

-NONE!

So Luis blunders on. -Well, you've got Whazziname* sewed up now. The docs sure love you evidently. When I saw you at the fiesta, I kept saying to Pru, wow, what a cutie she is! Before, I thought you were just a skinny, plain little nobody and I didn't want to recognize you as my daughter. But now I'm trying to clean up my conscience with you.

I actually thought he was making a little headway up till then. Just couldn't stop talking unfortunately. That's our Luis. One step forward and a gazillion back.

You all jump in and talk now while I lie down for a while. These people have really made me tired.

*Ricardo Bazán

"MIRADA":

Judy: You & I both know Luis is plotting more sinister schemes. The man's Body Language is quite obvious.

I'm NOT buying this "admitting his mistakes" crap.

"MIRADA":

Judy: I busted out laughing at your reference on Suzy from HoVille "Oh Just Stop It!"

With 20 some episodes left, I guess I’m not surprised that frustration is setting in. Hopefully we don’t go completely insane. Your work is appreciated, JudyB. Hang in there.

In my comment on yesterday’s episode I was basically saying that I didn’t know if I could be Team Beto for much longer. It’s not smart of him to ask other people to help him out so he can get on Marina’s good side again. He is trying way too hard and it’s more than just him asking for a DNA test for Rafael. So maybe I’ll just be on Team Nobody....

Finally Toribio is the voice of reason. I don’t see redemption for Luis. He kinda deserves to lose his family, including his grandson. Clearly all he cares about is having an heir.

I got a kick out of Ramona in disguise. Maybe Ric thinks Marina is paranoid about the mysterious patient but at least Viewerville knows she isn’t.

MIRADA

If you are quipping "Maybe I just need more drugs" this must be serious Judy!

A wonderful read - a gentle scolding about obvious frustrations but pure unadulterated fun.

You ran the libation gamut from "Another tequila and Tramadol and make it a double!" to "Brew me an espresso". "Where the hell is that bartender?" made me laugh out loud. Perhaps he's hiding? :)

I know there are many emotions swirling and the stench of desperation seems pervasive. I was relieved not to be watching this when I read "...gruesome, charred and broiled Doc Sotero". And there you have it.

I can identify with Susana who "is parked like a third wheel". I'm strictly an onlooker struggling to make sense of this yet cannot wait to see what marvelous words, phrases and vocabulary you will gift us with next Judy.

Judy, thank you for the constant sunny skies your wonderful recaps bring daily. I cannot wait to see what you will write next.

Gracias amiga.

MIRADA

JudyB, thank you for hanging in there and serving up another great and detailed recap. And, if it's not already too late, please don't overmedicate.

If I didn't know better I would think that Don Louse really was repentant. And maybe he is just a little, but certainly not thoroughly. Still, somehow or another he seems to be finding the right words. If (when) he backslides it might just be the final straw for Prudy. Although I just can't see her with Fernando who is no bargain either. But Luis without Prudy, and even without Angustias, is a goner, a cooked goose.

There was quite a bit of time-killing nonsense in this episode, like the girls going to check on the Mystery Patient, and Erasmo going around recruiting someone to help undermine Erick. But both showed one reason I so like these TNs. All the various nurses, receptionists, etc., who want to see Erick roasted on a spit, and sheet-changing pal Rocio too, are all very good-looking women. Just a coincidence, I suppose.

more later...

MIRADA

Thank you for another great recap, Judy, and perfect title.

This one wore me out, too. Sort of a “meh” episode, but full of plot propellers.
”There was quite a bit of time-killing nonsense in this episode,”
Amen, Andy!

My favs
--- ” Tiresome Beto (yes, I'm on Team Beto but I'm thinking of quitting)”
--- ” And what's more, what has money ever done for you? You've had it all your life and you've never been happy!”
Best line in the entire episode!
--- ” Are Fernando and Prudencia end game after Luis' adultery comes to light? Y'know, I like Pru but I don't really care.”
Me, neither.
--- "Another tequila and Tramadol and make it a double!" You can have my leftover Tramadol from my hip replacement. Wait …. on second thought, maybe I should take it when I watch this telenovela. It (Tramadol, not the telenovela ... or maybe the MIRADA, too) turned me into a zombie.

Why do I think Vane paying for Waldo will come back to haunt her? Oh, right. Telenovela.

Vanessa has gotten more affection from Hilda in, what, a week or two? than she has gotten from Susana in a lifetime. I’m watching this story closely. The writers can do a lot with this. (hope...hope...hope)

MIRADA

The thing about Beto and Erick is that everything has come or been given to them so easily, this far in their lives.
Women threw themselves at Erick until Yola comes along. He is actually having to work hard a chasing her. And enjoying it! He might become worthy of her, yet.
Beto has no clue how to make a relationship work, nor does he seem committed to it. Women sort of fall into his hands, too. I doubt even Dr. Phil could help him, though I would love to see him try. (LOL)

Thank you JudyB
This will be brief. Wrote one comment and my screen went to Steve B9urdeax’s page

I'm with you on this, and I suspect (and hope :) that Vane may surprise Chucha. She has been growing a lot and coming into her own, at least partly due to working and living with Hilda. And she feels guilty about the way Edson died. At this point she may be more loyal to Hilda than to the mother who has only ever used and abused her. Being now such a "good" person she might not just kick her mom to the curb, but she could dash any dreams of sugar plums and expensive jewelry Chucha might be having.

I'm hoping!

MIRADA

Good Morning dear Patio. I really WAS tired last night and decided to wait until this morning to enjoy all your opinions, quips and teasing. You are just the most fun ever, but I really needed a break from all things MIRADA by Friday, let me tell you.

But this morning, here I am rarin' to go.

Steve...I'm afraid you're right. Luis may be up to something more sinister if his Reconciliation Plan doesn't work.

TF...Thanks for the encouragement to "hang in there". We are at the point in a telenovela where the bad news just keeps piling on and we're ready to throw our hands up in despair. I had to laugh at Team Nobody. But I'm glad you brought up Ramona in Disguise. The actress is adding some real comic flair to her role. Her interactions with grumpy, rude Sotero have been rather funny lately, as is her creeping around the hospital halls, duster in hand.

Diana...Always so sweet to stop by and read the recaps, even though you're not able to watch. We've gotten used to Sotero's scars from the fire (the actual "charring and broiling" took place several years ago) but we're never gotten used to his sick obsession with Marina. He is an evil, creepy character. But to my mind, he's less detestable than Lucrecia, who, while gifted with smarts and good looks, a loving father, and an excellent career, is still hellbent on destroying another woman's life.

Andy....Ah, a man who looks on the bright side. Yes, an annoying side story about Erasmo trying to dig up dirt on Erick--but since the nurses were all pretty, not all that annoying after all. Certainly when it comes to eye candy, these telenovelas dish up more than enough for everybody.

Doris....Loved this:

Vanessa has gotten more affection from Hilda in, what, a week or two? than she has gotten from Susana in a lifetime. I’m watching this story closely. The writers can do a lot with this. (hope...hope...hope)

And totally agree with this:

The thing about Beto and Erick is that everything has come or been given to them so easily, this far in their lives.
Women threw themselves at Erick until Yola comes along. He is actually having to work hard a chasing her. And enjoying it! He might become worthy of her, yet.
Beto has no clue how to make a relationship work, nor does he seem committed to it. Women sort of fall into his hands, too. I doubt even Dr. Phil could help him, though I would love to see him try. (LOL)

The one constant in these stories seems to be that the characters need to learn hard lessons in life before they can achieve the happiness they desire. Luis, Beto, Erick, Lucrecia, Doc Sotero, Vanessa, Susana....All have lessons to learn. Some will. And others will go down in flames, consumed by their own evil.

MIRADA

Mely, the internet is indeed a mystery. When I clicked on my computer this morning I saw your lost message. But then when I tried to re-find it so I could "copy and paste" it into the blog line, it had already disappeared. And now, try as I might, I can't even remember what you said. Although I thought it interesting enough to try and post it.

Not only is the internet a mystery, my aging brain is also. Dang!

Andy...For some time I have suspected that you were a brother who teased his sister. Because I have a brother just like that. And he always makes me laugh. Our son is similar to his uncle and he often says to me "Are you REALLY trying to learn Spanish Mom or is this just an excuse to watch crappy TV?" As an NPR snob, I had to admit he'd nailed me! Very humbling to see how easy it is to get emotionally involved in these fantasies. Of course it doesn't hurt that most of the actors are drop dead gorgeous.
Ahem. But I also like that the undergirding theme, in the old school telenovelas anyway, is that Forgiveness (in the sense of letting go of past resentments) is essential to living in the present and appreciating what Life has to offer.

There is both great good and great evil in the world. But we have a choice as to what to put in the foreground of our consciousness. As much as possible I try to focus on my many blessings and not bog down in the hurts and betrayals. But it helps to have the constant reminders of these stories. There's no upside to living as a victim.

MIRADA

JudyB, popped in to thank you for this masterpiece you have shared with us. I'm running short on time, but I do have to marvel at your wisdom and magniloquence in expressing your thoughts--

This will go into my "Words from the Wise" file.

I'll be back later to comment on the "HOT MESS" and the idiots that are tiring out our JudyB.

MIRADA

"But I also like that the undergirding theme, in the old school telenovelas anyway, is that Forgiveness (in the sense of letting go of past resentments) is essential to living in the present and appreciating what Life has to offer. "
Judy, this wisdom goes beyond telenovelas and applies to real life. There is the saying, that carrying a resentment toward someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

"There is no upside to living as a victim"
More wisdom for life, and so true.

MIRADA

Well, there you go, Doris, we're watching these telenovelas not only for the Spanish but for the wisdom. And of course for the chance to hang out on a great patio.

Thanks Rgv Chick for checking in too. We always love hearing from you.

I admit, I do read about forgiveness a lot. There are some ongoing issues in my life and I need wise reminders in order to keep dealing. But there's a great saying in Spanish for that...Nadie tiene la vida comprada.

Which reminds me...remember for a while CarayCaray folks were saying "sounds better in Spanish? which I think then got shortened to SBIS. Some great traditions here over the years.

Have a great evening everybody. I'm watching the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on a friend's recommendation. Fun to see the 50's and 60's portrayed. Music is great too.

MIRADA

Gee, it's quiet in here.

Something I completely forgot about for a while is Baldo being so upset about Damiana and Margo, who missed their opportunity in the past but may want to try again. It wasn't perfectly clear to me whether they were talking about just what could have been or about what might yet be. I certainly hope it's the latter and we can send them back to the Valle to pick medicinal plants and avocados. (maybe mangos too? Mangos seem to be at their peak now; I have been pigging out on really ripe, delicious mangos lately even though I have never learned how to pick out good fruit).

I would much prefer to see doña Toolbelt and Baldo together, though it's hard to see how it might happen now after Baldo's weeping all over the place. I almost said "wimping all over the place".

:-)

andy

MIRADA

In total agreement, Andy. (What!!??) I'd much rather see Baldo with Dona Toolbelt also. I think they make a cute couple. Damiana doesn't ring any bells on my Cute Meter, or even Pleasant Meter, but she seems devoted to Margarito (who looks like he snores) and if that rings her chimes, I think he's willing. And they certainly do belong in the country. I don't think city life is good for either one of them. In no way does the city noise and congestion feed their spirits.

Glad you mentioned mangos. I used to get annoyed because peeling them was such a pain but then my Colombian friend showed me how she just sliced them and sucked the innards out and that was MUCH better. No expert in ripeness but if they're hard, you need to let them sit in your fruit basket on top of the kitchen table for a while. Product placement in these shows HAS influenced me. I now always have a basket of fresh fruit on the table and the family (husband, son, visiting offspring and grandchildren) just help themselves.

MIRADA

JudyB: "In total agreement, Andy. (What!!??)..."

Don't you worry about it, Judy; it won't last.

:-)

Hi JudyB hi all. I'm late to the table patio. Had a busy week.

Judyb you sound like how I feel, so so
Tired. And watchin people act stupid on purpose don't help.

One.
Thank you JudyB. Your snarky recaps is
Just what I need. Thank you much.

MIRADA

Hey Ms. Nina, glad you checked in. We were beginning to fret, since we usually hear from you before this. As TF pointed out, we're at that time in a telenovela when bad behavior and wretched events start piling on big-time. We'll be tearing our hair out over these folks for about 22 more episodes if Univision doesn't cut and slash at the end. That means a lot of calls for the bartender and drug-store prescriptions to get us through.

Although actually, all kidding aside, the only thing I take is a multiple vitamin. And some cups of Universal Solvent tea when really upset.

I like your "can't have her cake and the cherry muffins too". Always good to update these old sayings. I'm beginning to suspect you must be a terrific cook.

See you later in the virtual family room, amiga.

"MIRADA":

Judy: Let's hope Univision doesn't get stupid by cutting episodes as this Telenovela winds down.

Hey y'all they just show that scene where lousey is begging to see lil rafy, and when marina still not sure she wants him to he gets up a walks slowly Away shoulders slumped, aaawww poor me I can't see my grandbaby. I had to laugh out loud at that. Even my brother Said something about that. I just had To say something about that. He is so full of it.

I don't cook like I used to, but when I'm wanton some yummy I do it. Alot Of what I like is simi-homemade. I hope they don't start chop chop choppin, I want to see every bit of lucreepy and
Don lousey,sudoodoo,the charred one &
That snobby doctor (lucreepy's Ol man) all the crooks get what they deserve. And thatz if uni don't go chop chop!
