Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Lunes 7/8/19 Episode 77: The Front Page
Mexico City: Carlos
shouted at Nancy to make all evidence of El Ciego disappear. She
told him that this was impossible but he was not being reasonable.
She finally fled from his office.
Alan's
picture was on the front page. Alonso showed it to Roberto and Juan,
who noted that if Téllez had been extorting money from Alan, he must
have known something. Alonso said that this must be very hard on
Carlos. Roberto then noticed Juan's new watch. Alonso advised him to
think of the future before buying any more luxuries, like first
buying a house. Roberto seconded that and Juan thanked them. Then
he and Roberto left Alonso's office to look into Alan's case.
Boston: Victoria and Ricardo were
discussing the case when Victoria got a call from the DA's office
that the case will go to court in a few days.
Mexico City: Alan kept shouting to the guards
that he had the right to counsel. A guard made threatening motions
with his club, saying that people like him had no right to anything.
He did say that he was allowed a call. After he left the cellblock
two thugs walked up to Alan's cell and one said “I see you are the
cousin” and made an evil eye gesture that said “I am watching
you”. Alan was smart enough to be afraid. [He also looks too
good after Carlos did that number on him.]
Carlos paid Roberto a call to
talk about when he investigated Patricia's murder. He asked why he
suspected Alan at the time; what evidence he had. Roberto answered
that it was because Alan had arranged the party, invited the hookers,
ordered the champagne, and had a copy of the key to his suite.
However, when Pedro turned up the judge thought that he had a more
powerful motive. Carlos asked why he didn't continue to investigate.
Roberto said they had done what they could. Carlos wanted the whole
truth. Roberto asked why and Carlos told him that Alan had deceived
everyone. He had killed Patricia and Téllez knew about it.
Camila and Nicolás were walking
in the park and sat down by the fountain. She talked about her
French class and the teacher who didn't speak any Spanish. She
sensed that something was bothering Nicolás and he told her about
Lucia's appearance and his concern for Roberto. He was sure that
Lucia's reappearance would ultimately hurt Roberto.
Roberto was incredulous at Alan's
actions. Carlos felt like an idiot for missing any sign of it. He
wasn't sure why this happened other than Alan always resented him.
However, at least he was in jail where he belonged. Roberto asked
whether he wanted the case expedited, but Carlos told him not to
bother. As far as he was concerned it was too late because Alejandra
wasn't there with him to find out.
Nicolás told Camila that Lucia
said that he kept her away from Roberto all those years. He denied
that this was the case. He was worried that Lucia would manipulate
Roberto to be on her side. He wanted above all for Roberto not to
get hurt.
Carlos finished venting and
thanked Roberto for hearing him out. They metioned that nothing had
yet been done to get Pedro out of prison. Just before Carlos left he
said “Now I understand so much more.” Roberto's phone rang and
Carmen told him that there was a call from the prison.
Shortly thereafter he was in the
visiting room at the police station talking to Alan, who continued
denying that he had killed Téllez. He wanted Roberto and Juan to
represent him. He was willing to pay what it would take to get him
out of there. [Fat chance; that would be the equivalent of the US
national debt.]
Nancy went to the police lab and
chatted up the fingerprint expert. When she took out the cash the
woman tried to brush her off. However, Nancy knew that she had
trouble paying for her child's school...
Roberto declined the request. He
said he had met killers in his time, “But you are unique.” Alan
tried to say that Sonia was picking on the first suspect as she had
done with Carlos. Roberto said that this was completely different.
Alan implied that he would call Alonso to come in to see him.
Roberto told him he knew that he had killed both Patricia and Téllez.
The only thing he could do is accept that he had done this. He had
deceived everyone once, he could keep trying it but that would not
work anymore.
Nancy left the building and met
up with Herrera [who probably was the one who told her about the
fingerprint expert]. He was getting annoyed with her, telling
her that this doesn't always work and what if she goes to her boss?
Nancy said that wouldn't happen and she had no proof. Herrera seemed
to be kicking himself for having given her information in the past.
She seemed to think he would continue as she left.
Alan grabbed Roberto's hands and
almost begged him to get him out of there because he couldn't take
it. Roberto refused as he withdrew. Alan said he could pay whatever
he asked but Roberto told him that principles were more important to
him than money. There was no perfect crime. He didn't like being
deceived. He stood up, telling him that he would see to it that he
paid for his crimes, including sending an innocent man to prison.
Alan almost groveled. Roberto wished him luck and asked to be let
out. The guard – who had been watching and listening to all –
gave Alan a dirty look.
Jaime showed Paula the front
page. She could barely believe it. Jaime commented on how Carlos
must feel at the moment and Paula was happy that Alejandra never
married him, thus ending up with a murderer in the family. She
caught herself, speaking of Alejandra as though she were still alive.
Jaime said that was because she was in their hearts.
Javier discussed the latest
development with Alonso, the discovery of a hideout and a dead body.
There were fingerprints on the beer bottles found there and they were
hoping those would match up with some the police had on file.
Carlos dined with Michelle that
evening and was not his usual self. He had been crying and she
encouraged him to talk to her. He had to go on. He said he wasn't
sure he had the strength.
Boston: Victoria and Ricardo ate on the
hotel terrace while disussing Diego's case and immigration law. He
had entered the country legally to work, had not committed any real
crime, and had been a productive member of his community. His basic
human rights had been violated and he had not been properly informed
about what he had signed ten years previously.
Mexico City: Carlos and Michelle continued to
talk. He was starting to feel better. She talked about wanting to
be close to him. [She looked like she meant it, but considering
who she is we have to wonder.]
While Carlos was being comforted
by his new dream girl, Alan's worst nightmare had only begun. He was
surrounded by others in the facility so he headed back to his cell
and slid the door shut. The same one who had given him the evil eye
introduced himself as El Chulo. Alan asked him what he wanted only
to get laughs in return.
Boston: On the way to court the next
morning Victoria was nervous. They called Diego to let him know they
were on their way to court. They told him they were going to do
everything possible. He told them that if they lost he wanted to
know. They ended the call. Kate, Emma, and Jordan arrived and they
went to court.
Mexico City: Camila told Sofia about her day,
including Nicolás' concerns about his ex-wife appearing in Roberto's
life. Sofia found some of this surprising. Camila told her that
what never happens is that parents stop worrying about their children
when they become adults. She brought up Ricardo, but Sofia had
nothing to report. Camila had sensed that Sofia had a thing for him.
Boston: Court was convened in Diego's
case. The very WASP prosecutor gave Victoria and Ricardo a
condescending look as he went to his desk. Ricardo told her not to
worry. She gave the opening statement, saying that Diego was a
valued member of his community and although he had not committed any
crime he was deported as a criminal. The prosecutor talked about ICE
having the power to deport illegal immigrants in the name of national
security and that the defendant was in the country illegally, taking
advantage of their system. “That is why he can't come back.” He
looked smug as he resumed his seat.
Mexico City: Camila was truly hopeful about
something happening between Sofia and Ricardo. She said she couldn't
sit around waiting for Mariano to return. Sofia tried to explain
that what she felt for Ricardo was friendship and professional
admiration but Camila seemed to see through that. She said she just
wanted her to be happy. Sofia told her she was.
Boston: The prosecutor presented a
document saying that Diego committed a crime; that he was caught in a
raid. Victoria argued that his case had been appealed. The
prosecutor said that Diego stayed ten years past his welcome.
Victoria countered that only immigrants guilty of violent crimes and
those who present a threat to national security were to be deported.
Many don't know their rights, mostly because they don't speak
English. They also don't have legal representation. She called
Jordan Evans to the witness stand. He testified that Diego Molina
was a good person and a great boss. He was well-known in the
neighborhood and his customers liked him. He had helped him through
college. The prosecutor said that this was irrelevant. Victoria
countered that this contradicted the characterization of her client
as a criminal.
Mexico City: Alan was being stalked by El
Chulo. He asked the guard for help, but it didn't look as though he
would get it.
Boston: The prosecutor said that the
appeal made no sense because “the man is in Mexico.” Victoria
pointed out that the court had the power to review such cases but
that this did not happen here. She then announced that her client's
daughter is an American citizen and of legal age to petition the
court for her father's return. The prosecutor tried to say this was
inadmissible. Victoria said that her client's only crime was to be
caught in a raid at the age of sixteen. Nothing else. He had never
sold drugs or been involved in a gang. She said that Emma wants to
make the petition through the department of immigration services.
Form I-130 gives the right to American citizens with immediate
relatives from foreign countries the right to bring them back and
obtain citizenship for them. The prosecutor tried to say that this
was how immigrants take advantage and that times have changed.
Victoria said that while the political atmosphere has changed, the
law is just and protects the innocents. The judge asked if there was
anything else. Victoria said “Your Honor, I know you will be
just.” The prosecutor sang his refrain about immigrants taking
advantage and that they could not allow this to continue. The judge
called a recess. After he left Kate thanked Victoria and Ricardo.
Emma asked whether they had a chance; Ricardo was hopeful.
The judge returned with a
preamble on liberty being the basis for justice... and a verdict in
Diego's favor. He was a free man whose rights had been violated
under state law; the deportation was illegal. He had the right to
return as soon as his daughter's petition was processed. Case
closed. The very WASP prosecutor [who looks like he came from
money] was not so smug after this.
Mexico City: Sonia paid Alan a visit. Alan
reminded her of the offer she had made him. However, she reminded
him that this was before he was proven guilty of two murders. Also
of getting an innocent man sentenced for the crime. He offered to
help her bring Carlos down. She seemed willing to listen.

This was a good episode. A really good reprieve from the one earlier today.

Alan is likely to get killed in the slammer. El Ciego would see to that because Alan knows too much. Carlos would seem so fed up with it all that he would ask him this favor, which only gets him deeper in the pits of hell.
As for Sonia's offer, I thought her more intelligent than that. Alan killed two people and that is no small thing. He needs to rot in prison. His motives for killing Patricia show a deep psychopathy and the murder of Tellez shows sociopathy. If Sonia actually lets him go she should be his next victim because this would make her too stupid or insane to live.

I love the pace the show has now, but earlier it was too draggy. Some of the cases last too long for me, like which parent harmed their kids, while others, like Diego's deportation, are too short. The length of the unsuspecting sperm donor case and the lesbian mother's parental rights were just right.
