novelera and I have switched recap days this week. I will be recapping tonight's gran final and she will recap the opening episode of Preso No. 1 tomorrow. As usual, my recap will be posted quite late.

La Reina del Sur2 - El Gran Final - Parte 1 de 3

The scene opens with the good guys having tied Alejandro to a chair. Danilo asks them not to hurt Ale. But then he asks Ale whether he killed his (Danilo's) cousin. When Ale doesn't answer, he repeats the question. "I'm sorry," says Ale. Danilo explodes with pain and anger at Ale's betrayal. They take Danilo away, and then continue to question Ale. "What is this?" asks Teresa, holding up the vial of polonium that Ale had concealed in his jacket. Teresa says she knows that originally the goal was to destroy Zurdo Villa's financial support of Epifanio's rival for the presidency. Ale had originally tried to arrange that Epifanio would become President and then he, Ale, would be able to control everything. But Epifanio became expendable, and so Ale was going to kill Epifanio. and become President himself. But he'd also have to kill Teresa and her daughter, so there would be no loose ends. Lupo extends the vial of polonium to Ale and orders him to drink it. Just then, Bebita enters the room. "I heard everything," she says. "Who are you?" she asks Ale. "You were going to kill the father of my child." There's noise from an approaching helicopter. We see Cristián Nuñez in the chopper. He's trying to find a place to land. Teresa, Lupo, and Epifanio drive off. Cristián tells the pilot to follow the car. He'll handle Ale later.

We now see that Alejandro is also in the car. Teresa is driving, with Lupo next to her, and Epifanio is in the back seat holding a pistol pointed at Ale. Cristián speaks to Sheldon and asks permission to proceed. "Of course," replies Sheldon, who then greets his children, who have come to see him. He starts to show them his office. [I'm not sure what the point of this is. It surely doesn't make Sheldon less evil, at least not in my eyes. Are we simply supposed to see that Sheldon isn't paying attention to the mission?] Cristián tells the other people in the helicopter to get the weapons ready. "We're going to kill them all." Someone on the helicopter starts blasing away with a machine gun. Teresa is driving very fast and using lots of zigzags to try to avoid getting hit by the machine gun. Cristián beoomes impatient. "Why are you always missing?" he asks the shooter. "OK, forget about the machine gun, use the rocket launcher."

Teresa drives on to what looks like an army base. There's a structure that looks like a super-long quonset hut. She drives the car through the opening of this structure, thereby making it impossible for the helicopter to see the car.

The scene shifts to Málaga. Cayetana gets out of a car, hands Pepe some chocolates to bring into the house, and then talks to her lawyer, Rodrigo, who was also in the car. He assures her he'll make the changes to her will that she has requested. She tells him that she wants it very clear that all three granddaughters will inherit her fortune. Sofía comes out of the house to greet Cayetana with a hug. "How do you feel?" Sofía asks her grandmother. "Good," replies Cayetana, "because I did what I had to do."

Back in Mexico, Cristián tells the helicopter pilot that they have to turn around. "I want to see them face to face," says Cristián. Meanwhile, inside the covered structure, the car is stopped by the police, pointing machine guns. All four people get out of the car with their hands up. Ale has something of a smirk on his face. One of the police pushes Lupo, who suddenly turns around and overpowers the guy. In the confusion that follows, Ale gets into the car and drives it out of the structure.

reina-sur2
La Reina del Sur2 - El Gran Final - Parte 2 de 3

A bunch of DEA men go to the place where Danilo and then Ale had been held. Surprise, surprise, there's no one there. One guy reports back to Washington that there's no one there. "Alejandro is with them." This message apparently goes to Washington, not to Cristián. Seeing the car come out of the structure, he orders the rocket launch. Ale cries out "No!!" one second before the rocket hits the car. [I do a happy dance] A few seconds later, Cristián gets the message that Ale wasn't where they thought he'd be, they took him with them. Oops.

Inside the structure, Teresa, Lupo, and Epifanio are celebrating. The plan worked. Epifanio notes with some pleasure that "they made chicharrones of poor Alex." Teresa thanks Jonathan, who had been disguised as one of the police. [Thanks to Telenovela Magic, he managed to round up half a dozen or so others to act as police as well.]

In Málaga, Cayetana looks with pleasure at her new red outfit. We hear piano music in the background. She picks up the phone and calls Teresa. But no, she's not about to go on about Teo again. Instead, she assures Teresa that Sofía is well, but Cayetana would like Teresa to come get her as soon as possible. "Sofía misses you." Teresa fears that Cayetana is lying, but the woman assures her that the war is over. She tells Teresa "I loved my son deeply, I gave him everything, but I didn't give him what he most needed and it led to his death. It wasn't you, Teresa. It was me." She asks Teresa to tell Paloma and Rocio that they can return to Spain whenever they want. She also asks that Teresa ask them to forgive her for not knowing how to be there when they most needed her. "I learned that from Sofía," admits Cayetana. [Wow, this is redemption on steroids!] Cayetana opens the box of chocolates and eats one. We hear the ominous ticking of a clock in the background.

Back in Mexico, Bebita asks Epi what happened to her brother. "What had to happen. I'm very sorry," he replies. Holding back tears, she points a finger at him and looks at him with disgust.

Meanwhile, we see Teresa's crew. Rocio and Faustino are together. "Tell grandma I'll visit," she says to Teresa. Faustino adds, "As soon as we're married, I'll take her to Spain." Batman and Sheila, too, are together. Teresa says to Batman, "I never thought I'd see the day when I would thank you. Be good to each other," she tells the couple. Conejo says that she had originally planned to go with Teresa, but she's had a change of plans. Fermin has written to her. [I don't remember who Fermin is, but I assume he's good looking and half her age.] Ray asks Paloma what the baby's name will be. "Raymondo, like you" she says. He laughs.

Now it's time for Teresa to say goodbye to Oleg. Teresa hugs him and tells him "You risked your life for me, once again." Oleg says "there's no such thing as coincidence. Everything we went through was because of an agreement between the United States and my country. Polonium is radioactive and is banned in the U.S. It is used by Russian agents for secret missions. Everything was orchestrated by the Americans and Russians so they could intervene in Mexican politics. There are new alliances between the governments of both countries. My exit from Russia was no accident. I was harassed so I'd go to you. We were both pushed to destroy Zurdo Villa." Anton comes to tell Oleg that the car is waiting. Oleg tells Teresa to disappear. "Tell no one where you are going. I'm going to miss you," he says. "And I you," she replies. "What are you going to do about Lupo/Michele?" he asks. "Nothing. I don't even want to say goodbye to him." "Te amo," Oleg says. "And I you." [Has he ever said those words to Teresa before?]

La Reina del Sur2 - El Gran Final - Parte 3 de 3

Teresa is alone and thinks "it's the gray hour." Normally, that's been an ominous thing, but now Teresa is looking forward to seeing her daughter. "I'm comng for you, Sofía." And thanks to Telenovela Airlines, one second later, we see Teresa arrive at Cayetana's. She and Sofía give each other a big hug. Teresa assures her, "We'll never be separated again." [Even typing those lines makes me nervous.] With Teresa is Paloma, who brings Sofía Tozzi. The two sisters embrace. Sofía asks the visibly pregnant Paloma whether she's expecting a girl or a boy. "A boy." "Ya Ya will be very happy," says Sofía. They go into the house to see Cayetana. She's sitting in her chair, apparently asleep. They try unsuccessfully to wake her up. R.I.P.

We then jump to "several months later." It's election day. Epifanio, Danilo (who apparently has continued to work for Epi), and a crowd of supporters are awaiting the results of an exit poll. The TV announcer says that with 47% of the vote counted, Epifanio Vargas is in the lead. A very pregnant Bebita somewhat coldly congratulates Epi: "You got what you wanted." He kisses her, but she looks unhappy and walks away into another room. As she stands there, her water breaks.

The scene shifts to Wangetti, Australia. [According to Wikipedia, Wangetti is a coastal town in Queensland, Australia. In the 2016 census, the town had a population of 50 people.] Sofía is playing on the beach with a kite. Teresa is relaxing in a hammock. There's the sound of a motor. Teresa tells Sofía to get in the house, quickly! Sofía instead moves next to Teresa. Teresa angrily tells her again to get into the house. This time, Sofía heads back to the house. A white helicopter seems about to land, and we also can see a large yacht or smallish cruise boat in the distance. Suddenly we hear a loud shout or scream: "Mamá!" The screen goes black. End of season 2.

All I can say is I was so happy I didn’t have to recap this overstuffed gran final! I ended up watching it a second time this morning. Thanks, Juanita for an outstanding recap of the end of this story. Your running commentary was the best! “Even typing those lines make me nervous”. Well, said especially with the ending.

Best comment of the night: Epifanio’s “hicieron chicharrón al pobre Alex”. Do we have a “people and pork” theme here? First, Teresa and the chorizo factory experience and now this. I had to laugh.

It seems like the chocolates must have been especially “prepared” for Cayetana because she didn’t want Sofía to get her hands on them. She had only 48 hours to get her affairs in order before turning herself in to begin her jail sentence. With “Claire de lune” playing in the background, Cayetana’s suicide scene was very evocative and beautifully done. She told Teresa “Love can be a poisoned gift”.

So, Teresa wanted nothing to do with Michele not even saying goodbye to him. I kept thinking he would pop up in Spain or in the Australia scene but I sure was wrong.

I loved the nighttime aerial view of the Angel of the Independence monument in Mexico City. Beautiful!

I really disliked the ending. I expected more after the commercial but only saw the credits. It didn’t have to be a happy saccharine ending with FLEM (won’t forget that one, Juanita) but seeing Teresa, Sofía and Tozzi maybe in danger again was not good. They sure left it open for a third season. Maybe it was Godoy with a super duper yacht w/ helicopter coming by for a visit. . . : ) Realistically, I can’t see how a “Teresa” could stay hidden anywhere in today's world.

I will be watching the special tonight.

LA REINA 2

Juanita thank you for a quick and most delightful rundown of last night's gran fin which to me seemed like anything but a gran fin. In fact, that was the Telemundo talk on their morning show. They fully expect that since they can now trackTeresa to the ends of the earth (Hasta El Fin Del Mundo) a 3rd season must be the hope and the idea. If they can do it with El Señor de los Cielos, why not La Reina del Sur. I will certainly watch. I was shaking my head at the big mock up of police Jonathan managed myself, Telenovela magic indeed! BTW I was thinking somewhere near the beginning of their relationship that Teresa told Lupo she might next time move to Wangetti, Australia. Jarifa- cool catch of the night time juxtaposition of the statue of Mexican Independence with the win of the Amero-Ruso pact's originally intended winner of said election. He's barely more than a slightly over-intelligent street thug who survived and thus brought American and Russian attention to himself. It probably should be Teresa running this imaginary Mexico. At least the trains would still run on time.

reina-sur2

What a clever, excellent recap, Juanita! Your asides were golden. I especially liked your "happy dance" upon the demise of Alejandro. He was grinning with satanic glee just before he realized the fireball was coming.

I am also disappointed with the end. Most of us had concluded there would likely be another season, especially since they've called it Super Serie from the beginning. But a cheesy cliffhanger? I was surprised there was no Lupo at the end. Maybe he's in the luxury yacht.

Sheldon was showing his new office to his children. So maybe he got some kudos for his successful mission, or was it successful? Not sure about that.

No Big Ed in the finale. He probably had 10 minutes of total acting in the whole show.

I also remember Cayetana telling Pepe to take the chocolates to her room and not let Sofía have them. Really, after losing Charo and facing prison for her false confession, this was an inevitable end. They also hinted that she had some illness anyway.

Yes, Fermín was the guy who bailed on Conejo when our relentless Spanish cop Flores, aka Inspector Javert, was putting pressure on her in an effort to find Teresa. I think she'd have been better off going with Teresa and looking for young guys in Australia.

And thanks so much to our recapping crew for giving us so many clever and witty recaps as this terrific novela roared along. It was fantastic right up to the cliffhanger!

Reina 2 Gran Final

Fantastic gran final recap, Juanita! Thank you so very much for all of your work to recap and comment on Reina 2.

For me, there's a lot left unsaid and undone.

So the US and the Russians have formed an alliance to control drug trafficking. Ugh. Teresa and Co. are still a whole bunch of loose ends, no? Killing Ale doesn't solve anything.

OK, Teresa (or the DEA) didn't kill Michele. That sex scene was their despedida. No explanation of Michele's disappearance to Sofia? Sofia killed him off in her dream and that's it? I think a lot of the guys were jealous of that *bleeping* Italian. Philosopher capo Oleg sure looked happy Teresa sent Michele packing. I just feel a bit short changed.

Happy for Sanchez Godoy and Rocio. I really wanted to see him become a gentleman farmer in Spain. That would have been fun. Who knows what the future holds for those two.

No justice for Batman? Teresa swore on her life they'd get Epi. Forgiving but not forgetting? At least Batman and Sheila are happily together.

Where the heck was Ahmed? No goodbye?

Adios, Cayetana. Glad it ended that way.

Bebita discovered the truth and her mind was blown. She looked creepy on election night. They sort of left that hanging, too.

Maybe the ending was just another of Teresa's nightmares. That's how Reina 2 began. We may never find out. But I don't think they listened to us, Juanita. We may be getting Reina 3. And if there is no season 3, this will be the crummiest ending I've seen since The Sopranos.

Many thanks, Jarifa and Jardinera, for your very insightful comments.
Jarifa, I LOVED your "Do we have a “people and pork” theme here?" If the chocolates were in fact how Cayetana died, I hope she destroyed the rest of them. It would be awful if Pepe or anyone else came upon them after her death and ate one (or two or three). And I too kind of expected/hoped that Michele might turn up in Australia. In fact, I'm not 100% sure that he didn't. When Sofía calls out ¡Mamá!, I wasn't sure whether it was a scream of terror or a shout of delight. It's possible that she has just spotted Michele. Unlikely, perhaps, but possible. Anyway, I too will certainly be watching tonight's special.

Jardinera, I'm delighted you've been watching. Yes, alas, if they can do it with El Señor de los Cielos I fear they can do it with/to Reina. I fear it because I think on the whole Telemundo doesn't know when to stop. I enjoyed season 1 of El Señor but bailed out part way through Season 2. I was surprised and delighted that season 2 of Reina was so well done, but somehow I don't think that high quality will continue. Of course, I could be wrong (it's been known to happen :-) ). BTW, thanks very much for reminding us that Kate mentioned Wangetti to Lupo much earlier. I do remember her saying Australia, but since I'd never heard of Wangetti, that part never registered with my brain. But if she did in fact mention the very place to Lupo, I suppose it's a bit more possible that Sofía's cry at the end may have been a shout of pleasure rather than a scream of terror.

reina-sur2

Muchas gracias, novelera and dondi356, for your great comments.

novelera, special thanks for identifying Fermin. The name was familiar, but I could't recall exactly who he was or what happened to him. So Epi has survived and triumphed, except perhaps not personally, since I think he's lost Bebita's love. And who knows, perhaps the baby as well? And Batman has found love but no revenge. Hmmm...it does seem as if we may be in for a season 3. Arrgh.

dondi356, I was especially struck by your pointing out that there was no explanation to Sofía of Michele's disappearance. That troubled me more than anything else about the ending. Does it too suggest there will be a season 3? Anyway, thanks for all your superb comments on season 2.

telemundo

Halimacandy, welcome back! You don't need to ask permission to post comments or to recap.

I'm afraid I won't be watching this final season of Sin Senos. Perhaps if I had watched it starting in season 1, I'd like it more, but the only season I watched was the last one, and in spite of all the help you and deb offered to bring me up to speed, I didn't enjoy it. But I'm sure I'll enjoy your postings.

La Reina 2

wonderful recap Juanita! and thank you very much for all of your work on this novela!

well, it ended as it began, Teresa reading a book and Sofia in danger, is it a dream?

and what happened to Pote's gun?

great comments all, filling in the holes!

I'm not disappointed, Ahmed is probably carrying Batman and Sheila's luggage, Michele playing second to Teresa really took the life out of the character, Simon is the one I'd like an update on.

I'm ok with a sequel, but would like to see the next generation, the Teresa thing is pretty played out and I really enjoyed the scenes with Sofia.

and thanks to all the recappers who every day added life to this amazing story!

Reina

In summary, all the bad guys are dead (and Charo, QEPD). Sheldon should be worried about his job. The entire DEA could be replaced by Teresa and her team.

Nice to Sheila and Batman together. She's gone full-on Mexican and looks ready to become the next Ranchera star. Good for them!

They rushed the end, as these shows often do. Not crazy about the cliff-hanger (Oleg- he's the only one who has the means to find her), but I'd watch the third. After that, maybe not, unless it's becomes about Sheila and Batman as crime-fighting musicians.

I sure hope Cayetana signed something about her will before dying. And how can I get tickets for Telenovela Airlines?

Kelly

Reina 2

I could be wrong but I thought that Oleg was the only one who knew Teresa was going to Australia. That's what made me think Teresa was having a dream at the end. Oh, and also the big boat with the two helicopters--a bit of overkill. So, if there is a Reina 3, it's possible it will open the same as Reina 2. deb, are we thinking the same way?

I've seen and read interviews with Kate where she told about the novel's author, Arturo Perez-Reverte, outlining the story for season 2. There were subsequent meetings with the show's writers. If they can convince the author to do this again, another season may work well.

I've also heard Kate say that Teresa will eventually be too old to go running around as she does. deb, we may get the younger generation taking over if this lasts a few more seasons. May or may not be a good thing. The same actress should always play Sofia. She was absolutely amazing.

novelera, if there is a season 3, I think Big Ed will be back bigger and better than ever. Someone has to save Mexico from corruption and foreign influence. I also want to thank you for your great recaps and comments throughout.

I will be watching tonight, too. Maybe we will get some hints about season 3.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed.

Reina Final
Arrggh! I did not like this ending! After Alejandro goes up in a fireball it seemed like the episode just screeched to a halt. I was hoping Carmencita would show up at the election party to needle Epifanio one last time. And the Jimena angle never bore fruit!
I enjoyed that scene at the election party where Bebita slowly walks out and someone shuts the doors behind her while you can see Epifanio celebrating with everyone. It was like the end of first Godfather movie.
Thanks to all for the great discussions!!!!!
Blockhead

"REINA 2"

Juanita: I guess this means Vargas is the next Mexican President ?

Reina-sur-2

Thanks, Juanita. Fantastic storytelling. You captured both the facts and the feelings. Now that I have your recap, I'm going to watch the finale all over again.

When Ale hesitated and then said "perdón" after Danilo hysterically asked if he had murdered his cousin, I couldn't help but laugh. Ale reminded me of somebody who confessed he ate the last piece of pie that I was saving for myself.

So Batman is done with the vendetta against Epifanio?

All in all, well written and acted.

I watched the Reina special today, and I do believe I saw a spoiler regarding that last scene in the finale.

reina-sur2

Many thanks, deb, Kelly, blockhead, Steve, and Niecie, for your comments. I might just mention that I watched the special post-show show that they aired tonight (Tuesday) at 7 pm. Raoul Bova, who played Francesco/Lupo/Emilio/Michele, was asked whether he'd like to be in a season 3 if there is one. He merely offered an enigmatic smile.

A couple of other things about him were interesting. He may have had no family in Reina, but in Real Life he has four children. Also, he had to learn Spanish to play the role (I think his native language is Italian). He claims it took him a month!

All the other participants except for Bova were together, though I'm not sure where. They included the actors who played Teresa, Sofía, Epifanio, Batman, Oleg, and Zurdo. I was hoping that we'd find out for sure whether a third season was being planned, but nothing definite was said. There was some kidding around about waiting until Isabella Sierra (Sofía) turns 15 and then they could film Las Reinas del Sur.

preso

PRESO NO. 1 – PREMIER CAPÍTULO – Parte 1 de 5

Well I have a better name for this novela: Den of Vipers. I could just about hear the rattles. I can’t remember ever seeing so many villains in one show.

We see guards walking a man into a prison. It’s Federal Penal de Buenaventura and one of the guards mockingly says: “Welcome, Mr. President!” They ask his name; he says Carmelo. When they want the full name, he says Carmelo Alvarado Mateos.

We then see a flashback to a scene of his inauguration. He’s handed a sash with the Mexican flag colors on it. We see quick glimpses of some of the cast members we’ll know better later on.

One Salvador Fraga tells Carolina that she is the one who should be at the inauguration. She replies that she is his wife now. She’s just the ex.

Scenes of his receiving that sash and reciting his oath of office are interspersed with his disrobing in prison and getting issued prison garb. They take him to the C.O.C. (Centro de Observación y Clasificación). We see the usual newspapers rolling off the presses with the huge headline ENCARCELADO.

So the theme for this show that comes up next is a really corny, sappy love song. What? FF>>>

We’re in the USA in a Super Max prison where some guys are sitting around a table. Apparently the news about Carmelo Alvarado is on TV there. One of the guys asks one Rameses Cota if that isn’t the guy that got you deported. The same “expert” says that Alvarado stole $2.5 million dollars. [Why do they always say dollars and not pesos?] Rameses says he has lots of friends in that prison, and he’s happy to see Carmelo in there.

We again see Carolina Arteaga, the ex. She’s at the presidential residence to pick up her daughters. She’s furious at not being allowed to enter. She stalks off with her two daughters in tow. We also see a TV news announcer talking about the huge crowds who are protesting outside the prison.

Carmelo’s lawyer, Francisco Canales, arrives at the prison and tells reporters through his car window that Carmelo is innocent and hasn’t get been “processed”.

In his cell Carmelo remembers his youth. We see a flashback of his arriving at some site of a massacre in Chiapas (I think). He shows a newspaper photo of his father’s corpse and says the paramilitary forces killed him. He’s looking for the body. Carmelo says that his father was accused of being part of the Zapatista Revolutionary Army, but he was not. When no one will help him, Carmelo turns to some cowed looking people and asks them how long they’re going to continue to let their people be killed. If they worked together…

PRESO NO. 1 – PREMIER CAPÍTULO – Parte 2 de 5

A couple of evil looking guys (doubtless those same paramilitaries) overhear him and go after Carmelo after he’s approached some people. They hit some poor guy. One of the brutes says that the woman is a reporter. She’s defiant and says she’s going to write what’s happening here. We see typical evil grins of typically evil guys. They tell her to come along or they’ll kill a baby. Of course the plan is rape and Evil Guy #1 doesn’t even get fully behind the bushes. Carmelo punches the other guy and steals his gun. He then shoots the wanna-be rapist. Carmelo discovers that the reporter’s name is Carolina Arteaga.

The corrupt guards let an evil guy (picking up a theme here, guys?) named Tinajas and another guy into Carmelo’s cell. Tinajas says he brings a message from Rameses Cota. Carmelo is to give Rameses half of what he stole from the government. They beat him up…a lot. He promises to give them half. After they leave, he says to himself: la mitad de nada.

Back in Carmelo’s youth one Rita Franco wants to interview him about the Zapatista Movement and the injustices happening in Chiapas. In the present we see an older Rita interviewing a guy called Adonis Madrigal, who we discover is the new president of Mexico. She makes a crack about noticing that he moved in with his family and some remodeling is underway. Some guy called Bautista Fernandez, wearing glasses, interrupts the interview. [Boy does this guy ever remind me of Alejandro Alcalá in Reina2.]

Carolina is watching the interview and is surprised. She tells Salvador (who appears to be her boss at the newspaper) that she thought Rita Franco was a bought and paid for journalist.

Meanwhile Rita asks Bautista why the interview was cut short, and he says something about the interview went into other lines. Rita calls Adonis “interim” president, which doesn’t go over well. He glares at her.

When Carolina comes to the prison to bring her daughters for a visit, they aren’t allowed to drive in. They have to walk up and run the gauntlet of reporters.

In a restaurant a blonde woman called Virginia Carranza is talking to some guy over the phone. She says she can’t continue with this. Guy: “What? You don’t want to marry me?” She tells him she’s going to her house to get the paperwork and she’ll say that Carmelo is innocent. Unnamed Loco Novio starts stabbing a watermelon and then reaches for his phone. He calls someone and says: Change of plans. [I think the engagement is over.]

The one he’s called is Colonel Mayorga, the chief of police, who says he’ll give the signal.

Two more horrible evil guys (each pair is worse than the pair before; where do they get these guys?) are in a car. They get a call to implement Plan B.

PRESO NO. 1 – PREMIER CAPÍTULO – Parte 3 de 5

Bautista Fernández, the Svengali guy, tells the Colonel/Chief of Police that Virginia Carranza is the only one who can complicate their plans. Colonel Mayorga. She was (past tense). Bautista: “But if the gringo is protecting her?" Mayorga: “He was the one who advised me.” [So Watermelon Guy is a gringo?] Bautista gets salty with Mayorga, who isn’t having it. He calls him a pinche pelagato (mediocre, insignificant paper pusher).

We see Virginia Carranza listening to the news on her phone in her car. The newscaster says something about “Did she betray him?” We then see a flashback of Carmelo walking arm in arm with Virginia. He says they’re a team. She goes on to object, saying that neither his current wife nor his ex can stand her. He says she won’t be working for them, rather for him. She agrees to be…what? Chief of Staff?

Carolina is at the prison with the girls. Carmelo’s attorney, Francisco Canales, assures her he’ll get out of this when Virginia presents the documentation. Carmelo is led out, and he embraces both his daughters and Carolina. He tells Carolina that he believes in Canales, in Emanuel and in her.

We see the two horrible guys who got the Plan B call snooping through Virginia’s apartment.

Some guy that I later figure out is the son of Arturo Peniche’s character, Pedro Islas, is talking with Adonis Madrigal. I never got the son's name. He tells Adonis that it looks like he's comfortable in that presidential sash. Then he tells Adonis that he’ll enjoy it so long as he understands he’s not the one in charge. “You do understand this, right? El Presidente Gringo said this from the start. He’s the one who gives the orders.”

[What, again? Two novelas in a row with a plan for a puppet Mexican president?] “Don’t you remember what the Ambassador said? He says that Mexico is the sótano (attic) where the hydrocarbons, grains, arms and drugs are hidden. This sneering guy says he has to leave to talk with his father.

Bautista Fernández comes in and Madrigal says he can’t stand putting up with that daddy’s boy. He also gripes about Rita Franco, saying he thought she was a tame reporter. Then he tells Fernández to stop calling him Adonis. He prefers Señor Presidente.

Some other guy tries to kill Carmelo in the bathroom, but Tinajas interrupts. He says that Rameses has to say when.

Whoops, one of my favorite actors is Angélica Celaya. But she’s the current wife of Carmelo, Miranda. She’s whining to Emanuel (a friend of Carmelo’s) about how tough this whole thing is on HER. During her prison visit Meranda speculates that maybe Virginia got away with all that money. Carmelo assures her that Virginia is innocent.

A couple of street people open some kind of a tank a scream.

Miranda tells Carmelo that Colonel Mayorga told her that he was sleeping with Virginia.

The reporters are milling around outside the courthouse waiting for Virginia to appear before a judge.

PRESO NO. 1 – PREMIER CAPÍTULO – Parte 4 de 5

Canales is going over some papers in a cell with Carmelo. It appears they’re working on getting him out on bail until something concrete can happen legally. Canales gets a call about Virginia’s body being found.

The evil guys who killed Virginia grab up the concierge of her apartment. They start to accuse him of having a thing for her.

Miranda comes to a hotel and objects to the security detail. Emanuel says that Carolina doesn’t have to have them because she’s the ex. He says that she’s his boss’ wife and also a friend of Carmelo.

Salvador shows Carolina the newspaper that says that Carmelo stole $2.5 million with his lover as an accomplice. Salvador goes on to say that all the financial details of the embezzlement have been published. Carolina insists she’ll keep on investigating.

Carmelo convinces a guard to let him use Canales’ phone to call his friend Emanuel. Emanuel says he’s home. We see Miranda in his bed. Carmelo tells his friend that they killed Virginia, and he (Emanuel) needs to watch Miranda. She was seen talking to Mayorga. “Could it be my wife is working with them?” Emanuel doesn’t tell Meranda what her husband said.

Emanuel is talking on a park bench with a Major Zamora, who says that Carmelo is in danger in prison and that he plans to break him out.

Some shifty guards come into Carmelo’s cell and handcuff him.

Rameses, in the Super Max in the US, is talking with his lawyer. He says that Carmelo has to pay. Tinajas told Rameses that Carmelo took nothing ever. The lawyer warns Rameses that Carmelo has friends, both in jail and in the street. Rameses says he thinks of Carmelo as a brother. The lawyer: “Right, you’re from the same town.” Rameses explains what he means by the brother remark: Cain and Abel. R says to the lawyer: “Tell Tinajas to proceed.”

The poor concierge is being tortured to say he saw Carmelo enter Virginia’s apartment.

Carmelo’s cell door opens. Tinajas has come in brandishing a knife. Carmelo distracts him by calling out as if a guard were in the hallway. He yanks the chain of the handcuffs around his assailant’s neck and almost chokes him to death before the guards come.

We finally see Arturo Peniche, smooth as always. He’s Pedro Islas, an important guy apparently. We don’t know exactly how he’s involved yet. He’s talking to some guy in a bed who looks like he’s had a stroke. Stroke Guy suggests they might bring back Rameses from the US to finish off Carmelo. But Islas says they’d have to give the US something in return. Islas says that Adonis is going to “favor” them with judicial reform. But, first, they have to make sure people forget Carmelo Alvarado.

PRESO NO. 1 – PREMIER CAPÍTULO – Parte 5 de 5

We see another flashback, that of Islas and his son watching the news about the capture of Rameses Cota. The sneering son calls him Campesino Presidente and then says he hopes Rameses resists the pressure because, if he talks…

Miranda is talking with Emanuel. “Is it true that Carmelo will be in the general population with all the criminals?" Emanuel goes to the restroom.

The corrupt warden tells Carmelo he won’t get bail and he will be in with the rest of the prisoners until his trial. The reason is that he’s a suspect for having murdered Virginia Carranza.

We see the concierge being released, apparently having made the statement the Evil Guys wanted.

Major Zamora speaks to Emanuel on the phone. He says he’s going to get the President out even though he’s been transported. Emanuel returns to the table and tells Miranda about the prison break. She immediately calls Colonel Mayorga to beg him not to kill Carmelo. The colonel immediately picks up the phone to let the warden know.

When Major Zamora and his guys show up there’s a big gunfight.

Whew! We need a spreadsheet for all the baddies!

REINA SUR 2

Finally got to watch the special. Interesting seeing everyone as themselves. They all were so funny.

Juanita, I agree that nobody said there would be a season 3 but the only two actors (Raoul Bova and Isabella Sierra) asked about it, didn’t outright deny the possibility as you mentioned. Guess we will have to wait and see. Probably will be a $$$$ decision if it is resurrected. Aren’t They all $$$$ decisions? Glad you enjoyed my “porky” comment. I could not resist. 🐷

Niecie, good take on Ale. How despicable!

dondi356, too bad there wan’t more of Big Ed but it seems like a telenovela generation of galanes has come to an end. Too many are MIA these days. Funny but Jaime Camil’s character in “Jane the Virgin” is dealing with the same thing: a younger generation of leading men displacing the older tried and true.

Trivia: Raoul Bova was in “Under the Tuscan Sun”.

Wow, novelera! MANY thanks for this amazing recap! I don't know how you kept everyone straight. Last night I added an item to my list of things to be thankful for: you and I switched recap days, and so I didn't have to try to untangle Preso No. 1.

I don't have much to say right now. I'm not a fan of prison dramas, so this one had one strike against it from the start. And while Telemundo made a big point of saying that Preso was from the producers of L Reina del Sur, so far that's not obvious. However, I'm often doubtful about novelas at the beginning, and more often than not they turn out to be fine. So I'm sticking with this one for now. But without your wonderful recap, I probably wouldn't have been able to do so.

preso

Thanks, Juanita. I had a light bulb go on over my head in the afternoon, and I printed out the cast list from Wikipedia. It wasn't complete, but it gave me the names of the principal characters and which actors portrayed them. I had it by my side when writing the recap so I could get the names in there.

So, to me, a synopsis would be: honest man from very humble beginnings is popularly elected against the wishes of the corrupt, moneyed class, who are working to erase everything he stood for.

preso

One more thing: Telemundo (and probably Univision as well) are very sneaky. I don't think there were more than 5 minutes of commercials the whole episode. So they start you off with lots and lots of content and few commercials to get the hook set. And then they have looong commercial breaks. But I have a DVR so phooey on them!

Preso

wow novelera, what a great recap, getting all the names (like watermelon man) straight, this was way to complicated and chopped up, you did an excellent job.

hmm, I too have watched my fill of prison shows.

interesting, I compared writers and directors for La Reina and Preso, none were the same, maybe I'm missing something.

not really comfortable with the Big Evil for Mexico being the U.S.

while I'm ranting, guns on tv, so the Major takes a swat team into the prison and they shoot the prison guards, no good guys or bad guys here.

and the cops are the worst ever.

the part I did like is Carmelo's rich history, being the good guy, he must have a loyal following, and he was the people's choice, didn't Ramsés' lawyer say that Carmelo even has people in prison that will want to keep him alive?

PRESO--
Novelera, I can't imagine how you did it, even with a cheat-sheet by your side. Thank you. We just came off the wimpy PASL II, with only a couple of shoot-outs and one death by suffocating in wet cement toward the end.

I'm not sure I'm up for prison violence and up-close torture scenes, but I recorded it and will watch a couple of episodes before deciding to continue.

Here's praise to you and Juanita's successes with Telemundo's offerings. I'll check in again tomorrow.

La serie es llevada a cabo no sólo por Telemundo sino también por los productores de las reconocidas series Homeland y La Reina del Sur.

This came from a site discussing novelas. So, not the same writer(s) or director as La Reina del Sur, but the producers are the same ones. It's interesting that those producers also worked on Homeland, which I've enjoyed over the years mostly for Claire Danes, a terrific actor.

I'll try to put up a very short account of what happened in tonight's episode. It should be up in about an hour.

Preso No. 1 - Miercoles - Parte 1 de 2

We see again the attempt to rescue Carmelo from the prison. Since Miranda has tipped off the chief of police that this would happen, the police are ready, and everyone involved in the rescue attempt is shot dead.

The scene then shifts to 25 years earlier. We see Carolina as a young intern introduce herself to journalist Salvador Fraga. He's quite rude to her. Finally, he agrees to read the report she has written about the Zapatistas, and he's impressed. He lets her accompany him to the Zapatista camp, and eventually offers her a job. Also 25 years ago, we see Carmelo meet Rita Franco in Mexico City. She falls in love with him, but he is interested only in Carolina. Rita is annoyed (he accidentally calls her "Carolina" when they're having sex). She gets her revenge by giving him back a backpack and then having the police arrest him for theft. Carolina winds up getting him released. Carmelo comes looking for her, sits at her doorstep until she returns. She tells him he'd do her a favor if he stayed for supper. Apparently he cooks. He's heading back to his family. He tells Carolina he'd like her to meet his family. She says this sounds formal. He says it could be more formal if she said yes. They kiss. The novela theme song, "Amor divino," plays.

Back to the present. Bautista Fernandez, "President" Madrigal's assistant/advisor/strategist, comes to see Carolina and tells her that President Madrigal invites her to breakfast. She tells him she'd rather have breakfast with her daughters. Ooops, they're not here. They're visiting the presidential residence where they used to live. Carolina comes to see Madrigal. He wants her to be some kind of advisor/publicist for him. She turns him down. He says that the future of her family depends on her. "Are you threatening me?" she asks. She's still not interested. He tells her he knows she was at the attempted prison breakout. He could accuse her of being an accomplice and put her in prison for years. She still angrily turns him down. He tells her that since she's not interested, she should leave, and he'll offer the position to journalist Pia Bolaños.

Several people arrange to meet in a plane. Colonel Mayorga, the chief of police, arrives in an official car and joins the others already inside the plane. One of the others is, I think, Pedro Islas, played by Arturo Peniche. There's also an American and another guy. Someone presents a draft of a speech Madrigal wants to give. There's some disagreement, the Colonel and another guy draw their guns and point them at each other. Pedro Islas tells them to put the guns down: "We didn't do this to Carmelo so you could fight. We did it to remove the obstacles that Carmelo was putting in our way, preventing us from doing business as we'd like and making a profit." Eventually, both the American and Islas says that their respective governments' laws are, um, flexible. If the Americans will send Ramses Cota back to Mexico, the problem is solved. Agreed.

Ramses, currently in a maximum security prison the the United States, is told informally about the deal. He's delighted. Now he'll be able to get his revenge on Carmelo. We then see a brief scene from two years earlier, where Ramses apparently is hoping that Carmelo will be helpful to him. However, Carmelo tells Ramses, "If I become President, I'll chase you down."

Preso No. 1 - Miércoles - Parte 2 de 2

There's a scene with a guy I don't recognize. He's in a room with lots of photos on the walls (is he a photographer?). He's printing out another photo on his printer.

Emanuel tells Miranda that he's upset. He told her in confidence about the plan to rescue Carmelo, and she told Zamora. As a result, the police were expecting the rescue and killed the people involved. Miranda asks whether Carmelo is OK. Yes. She asks Emanuel whether he wants her to leave. He doesn't know. She says she needs him. And then they have sex.

Carmelo's mother comes to see him in the prison. They hug, and the guard tells them hugging isn't allowed. She tells him, "You can't tell me what I can and cannot do with my son. And take his handcuffs off." The guard obeys! [We can see where Carmelo gets his courage.] Carmelo is happy to see his mother, but unhappy that she's seeing him in jail. She tells him seeing him in jail isn't as bad as not knowing where or how he is. She insists that she won't sit by and do nothing. She urges him to be strong, and not to give up. She also says she is never ashamed of her children, not even Goyo, wherever he may be. Her visit and her words have given Carmelo new strength. If he had any doubts, she has made them vanish.

The time for his mother's visit is up. She leaves, and the guard escorts Carmelo back. He tells Carmelo he's lucky to have such a mother. The guard then gets a message that Carmelo's lawyer has arrived with Pia Bolaños. Carmelo meets with them. Bolaños is now working for "President" Madrigal. Carmelo tells her she can forget about her press conference, he won't be part of it. She replies that it's not an option, it's an order from the judge. Things are in turmoil. The market is unstable. The dollar is going through the roof. To calm things down, people have to see that Carmelo is safe and sound. Carmelo decides that perhaps this event will give him an opportunity to speak, but Bolaños says he won't say anthing. He is led into a room filled with photographers and reporters, all shouting questions to him at the same time, resulting in no one's questions being heard. Carmelo does the one thing he can: he defiantly raises his handcuffed hands above his head [as was shown repeatedly in Telemundo's trailers for the show]. The episode ends.

Thanks so much for the well written and thorough recap, Juanita. Well, I must say I prefer the flashbacks to 25 years ago to what's going on in the present.

The only prison novela I've ever enjoyed was Teresa Mendoza's sentence in Reina1. The relationship with Patty O'Farrell, the beat-down of the threatening prisoner, reading The Count of Monte Cristo awakening her intellect, all so well done.

I think the guy who was one of the ones who pulled a gun was the Novio Loco/Watermelon Guy in Epi 1. He looks familiar to me, but I can't place where I've seen him before. If it's the same guy then he's also a gringo. And the white haired guy appears to me to be an official of the US, thus the secret meeting inside a plane. He's the one who promised to arrange the transfer of Ramsés.

Well, when they mention a brother called Goyo, it makes me think of Chekhov's quote: if a gun is shown hanging on a wall...must be fired by the end. So, I'm sure Goyo will appear.

Well, Pia is one of those curvy, full of herself anti-heroines we've come to know and not love. Of course she took the job of whitewashing the new Mexican administration that Carolina refused. And she had Carmelo in a complete glass enclosure so he could not protest what's happening.

But those raised, handcuffed hands were SO effective. You could see the dismay on Pia's face.

preso

I'll put up something brief tonight.

Preso

thanks Juanita! these ones are difficult to recap, I appreciate your effort!

I think the fourth guy on the airplane is watemelon guy, (is this Pedro's son) any way I think he is also the guy with the photographs and I think he is checking out the blond daughter, will have to wait and see more.

Emanuel and Miranda throw me, taking the death of those guys so lightly, especially the Major.

not sure how Pia kept Carmelo from talking, was he inside a glass enclosure?

I'm really liking the back story too (better if it wasn't so choppy), it makes for a rich foundation, waiting to hear why Carmelo and Carolina separated, she has a lot of fire, as we saw when Carmelo wanted to go see his mom for 2 weeks, and he has a lot of stubbornness.

so Ramses the Pharaoh is coming to town, interesting how everyone says, Carmelo can take care of himself.

novelera, what an epic recap of the gran estreno. It was extremely helpful.
And thank you to Juanita for the second night recap. I found that extremely helpful, too.

Two episodes in and I'm having a difficult time with this. Partially because I'm suffering a bit of a letdown after Reina. I find the back story more interesting and less confusing than the present day stuff. I'll stick with it for a while and hope my confusion clears up.

Does anyone know the number of episodes?

preso

Thanks very much, novelera, deb, and dondi356. I raced through the writing last night, and I'm afraid it shows. I almost fell asleep this morning re-reading what I wrote. I think part of the problem is that I was completely uninspired by last night's episode. Like dondi356 and very likely others as well, I am suffering a letdown from Reina 2. The producers may be the same as those who did Reina, but the writers sure aren't. Not even close. I suppose Preso is no worse than any number of other novelas, but Reina is a VERY tough act to follow.

novelera, yes, it was Chekhov that made me include the unexplained mention of Goyo. I very strongly suspect we will hear more about him eventually.

deb, thanks for your help with the 4th guy on the plane. You almost always get these things right. And I too wondered at first why Carmelo didn't try to say something when confronted with all those journalists. I think the point is that with all of them talking at once, no one could hear anything or anyone, so there was no point in his trying to speak. And his holding up his handcuffed hands in defiance spoke volumes.

dondi356, I too would like to know how many episodes there will be. I had the impression that this would be a very short novela, but perhaps not. I tried to find out from my friend Google, but our friendship seems to be strained at the moment.

preso

Oops, I just looked again at your posting, novelera. I didn't notice a glass enclosure around Carmelo, though it would make even more sense than my explanation that there was so much noise from everyone shouting at once that there was no way Carmelo could be heard if he tried to speak. And yes, I think the guys met in the plane so that no one else could see them all meet, and the American could fly back immediately after the meeting.

I also agree with your comment from Tuesday's recap about two novelas in a row about America trying to influence a puppet Mexican president. Yeah, that does seem a bit much. Right now I'm more concerned about...oh, never mind, no politics on this blog.

PRESO--
From the Gran Estreno. Novelera, you're a champ. Did you realize that there were 23 named characters or involved more than just an extra? Whew!

Now I can go back and watch it and maybe understand what is going on. For Uni watchers, the "Interim" Presidente (not) Adonis Madrigal is our beloved, but older now, Luis Gattica, who I first saw as Lazaro in Cuando Me Enamoro.

I'm very upset that the police chief's name is Mayorga. That's my son's favorite brand of coffee.
