Since novelera's computer is still kaput, she won't be able to do her usual Monday recap. I'll try to do something very short. However, I've just realized that I'll be out tomorrow night and thus will not be able to do tomorrow's recap. If anyone is able to put something up tomorrow, that would be great.

Preso No. 1 - Lunes - Parte 1 de 2

The episode opens with the riot police fighting with both the hired thugs and the students and supporters of Carmelo. We see Watermelon Man (I think) spot a young woman leaving. He goes after her, asks if she's OK. [She won't be for long.] Emanuel and someone else urge Sara to get into the car. She doesn't want to leave Carlos [who is Watermelon Man, I think] behind, but they make it clear that things are too dangerous and out of control. She gets into the car and they leave.

At the prison, Cyclops, the new prisoner with the patch over his eye, sets off a smoke bomb and then enters Carmelo's cell. They fight, but suddenly Carmelo realizes that the guy is his long-lost younger brother, Evodio/Voyo/Goyo. Brother tells him to hit him, make it convincing, he's been hired to kill Carmelo. The guards finally arrive and take Cyclops away. When they're alone, the good guard tells Carmelo that the ex-procurador, Benito Rivas Macin, used his influence to keep the guard close to Carmelo so he could help him. Carmelo is surprised to learn that Benito would do that for him.

Benito meets with Pedro Islas. Benito keeps questioning whether what they're doing to Carmelo is legal. This is of little concern to Pedro. He tells Benito that "We [i.e., the bad guys] want you to become the next president."

Later, Benito tells his daughter about his meeting with Pedro Islas. He's angry that Islas thinks he can buy presidents. "This country isn't his," declares Benito.

We get a 25-years-ago flashback. The young Carmelo comes to find the blind man who has befriended him. He learns that the man has lost his house because he couldn't pay. He advises Carmelo not to look for the light at the end of the tunnel, but rather, find the tunnel's entrance. [???] Carmelo tells him he's leaving and will miss him. The man replies, "Don't miss me, but don't forget me."

The nasty prisoner Tinajas is suspicious of Cyclops/Voyo and accuses him of knowing Carmelo and being his friend. Cyclops tells him they're from the same area, and Carmelo messed with his sister, so he's out for vengeance.

Two of the march organizers are looking at photos from the march. They see a woman they don't know. They think she left with the gringo. They look for a good photo they can use to ID her. A bit later, they say the guy is an elite CIA agent, and that perhaps he used Sara Alvarado to infiltrate himself into the march organization. We then see the CIA agent and the woman having sex. Except soon the sex turns violent. We see a frightened look on the woman's face as she realizes he's strangling her. He has a look on his face that I can't describe--it's as if he's in a demonic trance. He strangles her to death, then lies next to her catching his breath. We then see a small device that could be a recorder or a time bomb. It has a red light, and we see numbers flash on the screen, indicating perhaps that there are 2 hours, x minutes, and y seconds to go. Until what?

A red sports car drives up to where three young guys are standing. Watermelon Man (I think) gets out of the car. He says something to the guys, and they recognize that he's a gringo. He then pulls a gun on them and tells them that there's something in the trunk that he wants them to remove. They open the trunk and are horrified to find a woman's corpse, presumably the woman he strangled. When one of the young men is reluctant to remove the body, Watermelon Man (WM) shoots him. The other two take the body out of the trunk, but WM then shoots guy #2. He orders the remaining guy to take off his pants and lie on top of the woman. The guy does so, but protests, "she's dead." "So are you," replies WM, and shoots him. He then drives off in his red car.

Carolina tells Isabel that there was an attack at the prison, but her father is OK. Isabel reminds Carolina that she said she couldn.t live without Carmelo. "So why did you get divorced?" [I've been wondering the same thing. Apparently we'll have to wait for the answer.]

Salvador Fraga, the journalist who hired the young Carolina, goes to see a doctor. I hated the doctor and hated this scene. The doctor tells Salvador he should see a proctologist. It's like pulling teeth to get the doctor to say anything more specific. He does tell Salvador that it's cancer, and that Salvador knows it. But when Salvador wants to know how much time he has left, the doctor just tells him he should stop working and go home. We get a 22-years-ago flashback to Salvador's wife telling him that she has terminal cancer. He's devastated. In the present, the doctor says that the situation isn't the same. Salvador's wife was in her 40s and wanted very much to live, whereas Salvador is...old. [What an a**hole!]

At the prison, Toño tells Carmelo that Cyclops has it in for him. To my astonishment, Carmelo tells Toño that Cyclops is Voyo, his brother.

Carolina is not happy that Sara is so taken with Carlos. Carolina doesn't trust Carlos. She has memories and nightmares of being raped by Ramses. We then get yet another 22-years-ago flashback. Carolina doesn't feel that Salvador understands how terrible her experience with Ramses was. She apparently gets through to him. He tells her that he's embarrassed to be a man. Soon after this, we see Carolina going to the police station to report the rape. The man on duty tries to discourage her from making a report. That's not the way they do things there, and especially not when it involves Ramses Cota. Another man comes into the station. He has an official ID around his neck. She looks like she may recognize him as being one of Ramses' men.

Carolina submits to Salvador her account of what happened to her. She's not sure whether they should publish it, nor is she sure whether or not she is quitting her job. He gives her 24 hours, telling her he needs to know who he can count on. She sees a photo on his desk. He tells her it's his wife, and she's dying.

In the present, the newspaper is carrying a story about a Masked Avenger who came upon three men raping a woman and shot all three of them. Salvador tells Carolina that he thinks they've got it wrong. It's too staged, he tells her. He also asks her to come work with him (not for him). "There are difficult times ahead. I'm dying."

Toño tells Carmelo to remember how he was when he was young. That works well here. Carmelo then has a 22-years-ago flashback. A young photographer, Claudio Tavulse, takes his photo and tries to strike up a friendship. Carmelo turns down Claudio's invitation to come back to his room. He goes back to his own room in the same hotel. Suddenly, he hears shouting coming from the room next to his. Carmelo knocks on the door. The cries become louder. Carmelo kicks in the door and finds Claudio being beaten up by another guy. Carmelo beats up the other guy, who leaves. Claudio is extremely embarrassed, but also grateful. "Whenever I can, if you'll let me, I'll try to help you," he promises Carmelo. [I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Claudio.]

Carmelo is talking to Amador, the good guard. He doesn't want to get beaten up, nor does he want to spend the rest of his life in prison. So what do you want to do? asks Amador. "Quiero fugar" (I want to escape), replies Carmelo.

Juanita, thank you for the recap. You covered it all. It couldn't have been easy to to. It certainly wasn't easy to watch.

So Watermelon man, AKA Carlos, AKA Joe, AKA Masked Avenger is a CIA Elite/perverted serial killer who is in on the plot to control the Mexican government? But he has a soft spot for Sara? Maybe it's because she was the aggressor in their encounter. I find this a disgusting story line and I don't like where it's going.

Conveniently, Voyo shows up after 20+ years in the same prison as Carmelo. Agree that Claudio will be back to repay his debt to Carmelo. And yes, we all want to know why Caro and Carmelo divorced.

Getting sick of seeing Carmelo beat up every night.

Carmelo, I might want to escape, too. Reina is a tough act to follow. Erik Hayser is OK but not a favorite of mine. Hoping this is a short one.

the DA daughter looked ok with him being the next prez, makes for a double take as to who's side is she on.

favorite scene was when Pia refers to the interim president as a *%^& idiot, and when Bautista mentions Pedro, she adds, he is a *%^& idiot too, or something like that.

interesting that Pedro has already written off this new president, like in LRDS.

the guy and girl you referred to as march organizers are some sort of security team tied to ?? Caro, Carmelo?, and yes they seem to have identified watermelon guy, (Joe Moreno from the cast list), as being some sort of elite CIA, and have a good look at the girl he picked up, they also tried to alert Caro earlier, not sure why they didn't follow up, the need for sex maybe?

I think that was the same camera watermelon guy recorded his scene with Sara on, and the time stamp on their postcoital scene, hmm, going up, and there were enough numbers the first must have been 2 days, maybe the total time since the inauguration.

what Salvador didn't like about the masked man thingy is that it was so set up that the authorities won't pursue the investigation.

yep, Salvador wants Caro to work with him, not for him as an independent, he's dying and wants her to take the reins.

pretty tender conversation Caro and Salvador had on her rape and his wife dying.

they said earlier that Cyclops/Evodio was one of Ramses' guys, hmm, (instead of running away he took a walk on the dark side), Ramses must know they are brothers, being from the same town, but it was Pedro that put Evo here, not sure why Tinajas thinks he knew Carmelo, but as things stand, they are waiting for Ramses to arrive.

not sure what the death plot on Carmelo was about, smoke bomb and all, Evo didn't even have a knife, and the guards were right there.

or watermelon guy shooting his gun, with silencer on it, into the air to get everyone's attention.

yep Sara, don't listen to your naggy mother, what does she know. (being Ramses' daughter she might get a pass)

Thanks very much, dondi356. I think we're very much on the same page. My beanie fell off when Voyo showed up in the same prison after 20+ years. And it's good to know that Claudio is likely to be helpful to Carmelo. Poor Carmelo needs all the friends he can get!

I too hope that this will be a short novela. I'm not a fan of prison novelas, and this one fits that mold all too well. OTOH, I'm not confident of Telemundo's airing a novela at 10 pm that I'll like. Reina was a huge exception. However, I'm certainly not about to jump to 9 pm to watch the last gasp of Sin Senos (tho it may appeal to folks who have watched the series from the start), nor to 8 pm to watch the non-novela Exatlón (yawn). So I guess I'd better keep my fingers crossed about what's likely to be on at 10. It's really a pity. I came to Telemundo because I found their novelas more interesting and innovative than those on Univision. I've enjoyed novelas like Bajo el mismo cielo, Eva la trailera, Silvana sin lana, La doña, Al otro lado del muro, and Falsa identidad, to name some that come to mind. And IIRC, few or none of the novelas I mentioned were on at 10 pm.

OK, end of rant.

Wow, deb, thanks for all the great info. I didn't see your message until after I had posted mine.

Yes, the DA's daughter thought it would be a terrific idea if her father were president, no matter how he got there. The father calls her on it. I think at one point, perhaps in an earlier episode, the DA berates himself for not being a good enough father to install the right values in his daughter. Yup, seems he's right. As you say, it's hard to know at this point whose side she'll wind up on.

Good point about Ramses surely knowing that Voyo and Carmelo are brothers. That doesn't bode well for Voyo once Ramses arrives. Especially since Voyo didn't attack Carmelo with a knife and didn't succeed without it.

And thanks VERY much for the explanation about the recording device. I really was puzzled, especially when the numbers flashed. That made me think of a time bomb, but your explanation makes more sense.

This is what I remember from last night. It's not much. Please add whatever you can.

Young Carmelo is posing for pix with Claudio and Gina. They are creating a portfolio to submit to a client. When did this modeling thing happen? This is how Claudio wants to repay Carmelo?

Young Caro faints outside the office while asking guards about Carmelo’s whereabouts. Later we see Salvador talking to Caro’s doctor about the telenovela diagnosis for fainting: pregnancy.

The procurador can’t live with his guilt anymore so he decides to put a bullet in his head. Daughter stops him just in time. He explains his reason. She cares for about 5 seconds and then says, do what you want but wait until we leave the house. He stops her and says he will take the presidency to right the wrong.

The spies, whoever they are, are still talking about telling Caro about Carlos’ relationship to Sara and the dead girl. Keep talking among yourselves. Good grief.

We see Carlos at home drinking and drugged up, reliving in his mind the revolting thing he has done. He's thinking of Sara, too.

Young Caro meets with her mother for lunch. Apparently she comes from a well-to-do family. She wants to tell her mother that she has a job as a journalist and that she’s pregnant. Mom's response to everything: “You have been dead to us for long time “. Mom puts some money on the table and walks away.

Caro visits Carmelo in prison and brings a book about Rome from Claudio: You will know what this means. I wonder if they know who David Kaplan is?

Carmelo gets a beat down again. Voyo participates to make it look good.

Young Carmelo gets the modeling job.

Sara finally meets up with Carlos and she brings him to the family's home. He almost gets caught snooping around by Caro.

it's interesting how these episodes are intertwined, characters, events, and time.

so Claudio, who appeared to be gay earlier, taking a strange guy back to his room, is repaying young Carmelo by setting him up for a job, by which they will all benefit, his girlfriend/associate prances around in a towel to give Carmelo the good news, asks Carmelo if he is feeling frisky, he says something like she does have nice body but he will respect their (Claudio, her) lifestyle.

the top exec likes Carmelo's country style.

while in the big city Carmelo seeks out young Caro at the Plural newspaper, still in a funk from the rape she blows him off, he walks away as a nothing, but remembers the old man saying she was crying when she left town.

yep, Caro's mom is snotty, sounds like Caro's independent ways didn't ever sit well with her parents.

every show watermelon Joe gets more frightening and creepy, here with some booze, coke, and a video of killing the girl, he goes into his world of demons, smashes himself in the face numerous times with his fist, later Sara (who was named after Salvador's wife) sees the bruises, he spins a tale about being taken in by the police at the rally, Sara realizes that it's because of being with her, she is so sorry.

I'm guessing our undercover surveillance couple are linked to Carmelo's organization, but got cast aside when Carmelo was replaced, yes they want to spill to Caro on Joe, but is this a good time?

so Claudio has sent a book on Rome to Carmelo, Caro is suspicious, but in his beatdown he loses it.

Carmelo tells Amador, the friendly guard the DA moved from the first jail to this one to do what he can, that he wants to escape, also tells Tono, and later when Evo comes to apologize, Carmelo wants him to come with him.

maybe Vega, the evil guard, is seeing some respect for the prez for the beating he is taking, not, but I think the underlying story is best said by the male nurse/medic, "I voted for you".

Sending this from work computer. Thanks so much for getting us started, Dondi. I am OVER Carmelo's beatdowns. It's just too ridiculous that they just get away with that. Of course, it's because Vega, who I understand to be the supervisor of all the guards, is likely being paid by Pedro Islas to help out in the murder.

And Carlos/Joe/WG is beyond despicable. It sure looked to me like he took that video of having sex with the woman from the march and then strangling her so that he could enjoy seeing it again. Sick, sick puppy. This part of the novela is SO distasteful.

Voyo stopped the beating, IIRC, by saying they should leave something for Ramsés.

Amen on the "good grief", Dondi. When are those two security people EVER going to tell Carolina her daughter is hanging out with CIA? I had the impression that these two were part of the Mexican "Secret Service" and are somehow still watching out for Carmelo's family. I don't quite understand why because Miranda, Carmelo's current wife, griped about having a security detail. And Emanuel told her that she had the guards because of being current wife, while Caro, as an ex, did not have them. Deb, you posited these security people had been cast aside. But, are they working for free?

So...#1046 fainting as telenovela pregnancy diagnosis? Or is it more?

That Rome book seemed to me like it might be pictures of sites in Rome. Would this be some clue for an escape?

I think Carmelo's been chosen as a model, but I also think there's some kind of a deal that will be signed for Claudio and Gina's business.

Dondi, I enjoyed your snarky "She cares for about 5 seconds." And yes, Carolina's mother is a piece of work. As soon as she heard that Salvador is a journalist, she turns her nose up: he's an employee! Perhaps it's just as well that Caro hasn't had (and isn't likely to have) much contact with her. Also, I loved your "I wonder if they know who David Kaplan is?"

deb, are you suggesting that Claudio isn't gay? I've been assuming that the young woman with him is a work associate, not a love interest. And Watermelon Man gets more repellent by the moment. I couldn't decide if he was slamming his fist into his head so that he'll seem to have been bruised during or after the march, or because he's out-of-his-mind crazy (as in the eerie look on his face as he was strangling the woman to death in the previous episode).

novelera, like you I am more than tired of the daily beat-downs that Carmelo gets in prison, not to mention the sick threats posed by Watermelon Man. And yes, I too think that Carmelo's being signed as a model also is supposed to result (and perhaps does result) in a deal for Claudio and Gina's business.

I've got just a little to add to what's already been said. One thing is that Carolina (I think) goes to view the corpse of the woman Watermelon Man murdered. She's told that there are no clues, no skin or semen to examine. Did WM really not ejaculate inside the woman before rolling off her newly dead body?

I may be wrong, but I think the woman and man who have been watching the video and photos from the march say that they want to tell Carolina about Watermelon Man but are afraid if they tell her now, she'll do something. Not clear what that "something" is, but the implication is that it would screw things up. It's not clear what things, or how they'd be screwed up.

I was heartened to see that Emanuel too distrusts Watermelon Man and doesn't want Caro to leave Sara alone with him.

Was anyone else nervous when Carmelo asked his brother to give him a hug as he lay in the hospital bed? I feared that one of the bad guys would come in and see this.

I found out today that my computer is dead, dead, dead, nothing to be recovered. I just ordered the new one from Amazon that will arrive at my work address on Friday. The company IT guys are going to take it and start the set-up. What I need to do is see if I can reach Norton on the 800 number about the theoretical backup I have. I can't log into my Norton account to ask about backups because I DON'T REMEMBER THE PASSWORD! That password along with many, many more resided on the dead computer. Sigh.

So I'll try to put up a few sentences tonight. I managed to get a keyboard recognized by the tablet. But it's a poor excuse for a keyboard, lacking many useful features such as the number keys on the side, etc. It will be a bare, bare bones recap.

My condolences on the death of your computer. With any luck, you'll find that the new one you've ordered is faster and better than the one that died. And it's great that you've got the company IT guys to help you set it up.

Thanks too for offering to put up a few sentences about tonight's episode. I think today's discussion shows that that can work quite well.

BTW, I've found that one very useful program for helping to deal with remembering passwords (or rather, not having to remember passwords) is a password manager. There are a number of such programs. The one I've used for years is LastPass. There's a perfectly decent free version for a single user. I started with that but eventually moved to their "premium" version to get some extra features. With LastPass (and other similar password managers), you just have to remember the master password you set for LastPass. And no, I don't work for them. :-)

Caro gets Carlos/Joe/WG out of her house and Sara is furious.

What? Our security male/female team roll up on Carlos. He knows right away and starts shooting A gunfight ensues and female security is shot.

A fat prisoner has Carmelo’s book, Roma. He’s bribed with chocolates, and he gets it back.

In the past at a photo studio Carmelo sees a Pres. Candidate on TV and says they do nada!

In the past Caro comes out of the newspaper office, sees Carmelo and runs into his arms.

Caro tells Carmelo about being pregnant. He says he doesn’t care if he’s not the father and wants to marry her.

Sara’s terminal cancer diagnosis is told to Chava (like this nick; faster to type!)

While Sara and Caro are arguing in the present, Caro gets a call and forbids Sara to ever see Carlos agai.

We learn that Sara had a female twin who was born dead.

Anyone who understood this chime in. In the Roma book, when certain words are picked out, you can read that some of Chapo Guzmas tunnels stillexist.

Paco wants to move Carmelo because of the beatdown, but he refuses, telling his lawyer and Emanuel about Voyo

Caro does tell Sara about Carlos. We don’t see if she believes her.

Carlos wants to know who was shooting at him. He goes berserk about whatever they say to him

We don’t see Carmelo and Carolina marry, but we see Chava call in the middle of the night about Sara being very serious. Caro’s water breaks.

Vega and some other prisoners drag Carmelo out of his cell in the middle of the night.

wow, novelera, you're like one of the characters in our story, making this recap happen, against all odds!

so the book, Carmelo learns, has some words in parenthesis, that when you put them together make sentences, and as it turns out, el Chapo guys made more than one tunnel and there is one in one of the bathrooms, Carmelo finds a pic hidden in the book.

and the big guy has said, he voted for Carmelo.

it surprised me that watermelon Joe open fire on our security guys, when he asked who they were, they identified themselves as eagle 1 and eagle 2, what?, and they didn't take the shot girl to the hospital, but Caro seems to have gotten an earful.

hmm, and why didn't they go to his house?

I'm loving this version of a Gran Amor, were there ever a more stubborn couple.

so as Carmelo rushes Caro to the hospital because Salvador has called to say this may be it for Sara, her water has broken, and to the same hospital ??, Carmelo remarks about 1 dying and 2 being born.

as Carmelo tells his lawyer he doesn't want to be transferred because his brother is here, it looks like Vega is making that happen.

¡Muchísimas gracias, novelera! Wow, talk about grace under pressure! Even with your computer gone, you've found a way to do a terrific mini-cap. And you managed to cover everything important. Indeed, I can't think of much to add except for a few details and questions.

When the security team drive up, Carlos immediately starts shooting, and they just as quickly return fire. At one point, Carlos grabs some innocent passerby and holds him in front of himself as a shield, with his gun pointed at the guy's head. Carlos asks the security team "Who are you?" They reply something like "Eagle 1 and Eagle 2." Then he asks them where they're from, and the response is "The White Palace." Huh? Is "the white palace" a way of referring to the White House? If so, are there two rather different American agencies at war here, one pro-Carmelo and one wanting to get rid of him?

Tonight's episode seemed to focus mostly on the past. All the episodes have included flashbacks, but tonight it seemed more as if we were in the past and every now and then we flashed forward. I definitely preferred the past. I loved the scene where Carolina tells Carmelo that she thinks she's pregnant. When he responds, she says "I never said it was yours," and he replies "I never said I cared. It's yours--that's enough for me." Another related scene that I liked was when Carolina introduces Carmelo to Salvador and says Salvador has been like a father to her. Hearing this, Carmelo gets up, goes over to Salvador, and formally requests his permission (as her "father") to marry Carolina. At times, I think the flashbacks present Carmelo as a bit too much of a saint (but a saint who knows how to fight). Usually, I'm annoyed by saintly characters, but I don't seem to be with Carmelo.

The one other thing that struck me was that I felt Carolina was foolish not to give her daughter Sara some explanation when she tells her she must not see Carlos again. Sara is not a child. Carolina was (and perhaps still is) really in danger of losing her. Indeed, Sara left the house and hoped to find Carlos waiting outside. He had left, and Sara went back inside, but had he been there, Sara certainly would have gone off with him and probably not returned. Eventually, after receiving a phone call, Caro does tell Sara that Carlos has lied to her and used her, and that in fact he's an undercover agent, probably working for the CIA. Not surprisingly, Sara thinks her mother has been watching too many movies [or telenovelas?].

Deb: Gina looks HOT & SEXY with the wet towel. I noticed that towel was edging close to falling off considering she was grabbing it very hard.

Juanita: I think the innocent female hostage died after getting shot. The Eagle 2 Girl got shot in the chest & also died.

I do agree with Carolina: Carlos is bad news (the other girl was strangled to death). Sara is so damn STUPID to see the truth.

PS: How many people wanted Carmelo removed from the Presidency ?

Carmelo’s modeling job is for a company run by Pedro Islas & son. They are watching the same presidential candidate interview as Carmelo. Seems their political interests go way back.

Caro opened up to Chava about the abuse she suffered from her alcoholic father. Mom refused to believe.

The Eagles (1 & 2) have landed: real head scratcher, that shoot out around the corner from Caro’s house. Is Carlos/Joe a rogue CIA agent? Yay! Someone finally told Caro something--what exactly? I need more info.

Juanita, St. Carmelo gets on my nerves at times. But he did kill 3 people, IIRC with good reason, and was absolved by the parish priest so that makes it all good. I wonder if this will come out in present day.

It really does seem as if the members of the Evil Business Cartel are the only ones who want Carmelo out. Everybody else, inside and outside of prison, adores him.
