La Usurpadora - Capitulo 8 - A silhouette of a galan emerges

We open with Paulina standing in the foyer of Gonzalo’s house with Santiago pointing a gun at her. Meanwhile at Manuel’s, Paola and company are watching the scene unfold via a live stream (I suppose we are to presume Paola installed a few cameras there while she was lately camping out at that house?). Suddenly, out of nowhere, Nava jumps out and tries to tackle Santiago. Watching this on screen, Paola is freaking out – yet another murderous plan is about to be botched!! A short struggle ensues, where Santiago temporarily has an upper hand but ends up running away. Nava chases him.

Paola has another meltdown and ends up cutting her hand, while smashing everything in sight. Teresa is sitting at the table smoking and sarcastically observing hysterical Paola and fussy Manuel, who doesn’t know how to help her. Teresa passes him a bottle of whiskey to put some on Paola’s bleeding hand.

Meanwhile Nava is back without Santiago. Paulina is shaken up, runs up to him and hugs him. He comforts her, then demands some answers. Teresa sees that Paulina is about to tell him the truth and alerts Paola. She and her trusty watchdog Manuel come running, and Manuel quickly texts Paulina that if she talks, her mother is as good as dead. Paulina ends up saying that she hasn’t heard from Gonzalo in a while and was worried. That is the reason for sending Monse and that’s why she was here herself. She doesn’t know Santiago or why he would try to kill her.

The next morning Nava received a call from (real) Paola, cryptically asking him to meet her out of the house, so she can share some additional information. They meet on the roof of some building. Nava notes Paola is very calm after what happened. She quickly corrects herself and says she is not calm at all and actually couldn’t sleep. Nava notices a cut on her hand, which she claims is from earlier yesterday, but Nava says he didn’t notice it last night. Still, they gloss right over it, and Paola theatrically declares she is afraid for her life and throws her arms around Nava. Appears like she over-acted a bit, based on how he looks.

Paola then spins a tale of her supposed previous encounters with Santiago, where she overheard him and Gonzalo talk about their business. Santiago threatened to kill both her and Gonzalo in the past, and Gonzalo even wanted to escape, she says. But she could not do that – she is the First Lady after all. But yesterday she got a text from Gonzalo and thought he had returned, but it all turned out to be a trap. Paola gives up Santiago’s last name to Nava, begs him to save her life and stop Santiago, then flies into his arms again. Throughout this discourse, Nava notices some inconsistencies again, like the fact that she now claims to know Santiago, when she denied that last night, but apparently all of that is erased under the damsel in distress gaze of the First Lady.

Meanwhile, Juana is nursing Emilio back to life. He complains he promised Gema he would not drink and it’s killing him. Juana is surprised he seems infatuated with that “Senora”. She is not for him, wisely declares Juana. She brings him some soup and Emilio inquires if Juana has any family, or a boyfriend. Juana says Emilio’s family is her family and makes light of the question about the boyfriend.  Emilio is not one to give up though and later asks one of the maids about Juana’s personal life. Turns out Juana had a fiancé once, but he had a problem with alcohol, so she broke up with him.

The real victim of a would-be assassination attempt – Paulina – is in bed, feeling sorry for herself, when Monse comes in to check on her. Paulina laments that all the of problems seem to befall her, when all she ever wanted was a quiet life. If not for Facundo, she’d be dead now. Monse doesn’t let her wallow for too long – she tells her she has much more power than Paola, even as a pretend First Lady and she needs to use it. They decide that she needs to make sure her mother is safe, and for that she needs to go to Colombia. Now they just need a reason for that trip. Never fear, says Monse – Paulina is not alone. She has her trusty nurse and also (apparently) now she has Facundo. To cheer her up, Monse unveils the treats she brought – some Colombian sweets and drink. (As Paulina take a bite of that pastry, and we – the curious audience – notice that the pastry already had a chunk bitten off. Must mean this is not the first take of this super complicated self-pity scene. Who do you think messed up their lines?)

Paola collects her well-hidden money from the church and calls Manuel to ask him to inform Terrifying Terry that money is in hand. Those who are well-fed, shouldn’t bite the arm, says Paola. (Apparently even Paola finds Terry terry-fying). With this news of upcoming monetary gains, Terry places a call to Santiago Riveroll, telling him she has his money from his partner and will return it to him tonight.

Paulina and Monse concoct a scheme to get Paulina to travel to Colombia. To put it in motion she needs to call Andrea to get some information from the non-profit’s data bank. Paulina uses Monse’s phone to do so (we strap our beanies tighter – she can use the phone to call Andrea, but not anyone else or her mom…). Andrea uses this opportunity to alleviate her conscience and tell Paulina about her escapades with Wilson. The phone call is cut short, as Manuel appears in the garden all of a sudden. Paulina interrogates Manuel on whether he knew about last night’s assassination attempt, and Manuel denies that.

Back at the Presidential HQ everyone is preparing for the press conference to announce Camacho’s misfortune, followed by private Presidential celebration for the select few at his house. Nava tries to talk to Carlos (presumably about Paola), but doesn’t get any of his time and Gema delays him till “later”. He calls Pedro, who is visiting with sniper’s mother (who is alive by the way!), so Pedro can’t talk either. Nava is not having a very successful afternoon.

Pedro, however, finds out that the sniper’s mom remembers the description of the man, who drugged her (Manuel). In return, she makes Pedro promise they will help find her son.

Later Pedro and Nava are discussing that description, and Nava is distracted thinking how Paola appeared to be a completely different person this morning, than the one he saw yesterday (finally, someone is catching on!). Nava muses how sometimes she appears so in-control, and other times so vulnerable. Pedrito remarks that Nava should be careful – those people are the most dangerous ones. Wise one, that Pedro. Nava just manages to ask Pedro about that lie detector test, when someone comes in to tell that Carlos is expecting everyone in the main hall.

Carlos, who already had a press conference and even gave the Mexican FBI time to arrest Camacho, is indeed celebrating at his house. Everyone is merry and content, except for Fangul, who vows to avenge this. Carlos gives a speech and thanks Paola for her assistance in providing information. He plants a wet smoochie on her lips right in front of Gema, who retreats upstairs to check on Emiio in an effort to avoid more happy family scenes. Emilio misunderstands Gema’s attention and goes for a kiss, but Gema handles it well and tells him not to confuse things (although it did seem that she let that almost-kiss to linger just a little bit longer than I’d think anyone would feel comfortable doing with a teenage kid…)

Facundo pulls Carlos away to chat. He tells him about Paola’s lover – an arms dealer, and the latest assassination attempt. Carlos is very grumpy Facundo spoiled his perfect day (missing the point, Mr. Genius Presidente...) He orders Nava to work with Pascual to get to the bottom of this. Nava inquires if there is any possibility that someone in Carlos’s cabinet is implicated in this and gets a resounding negative to that.

Lis and Diego are having a cute moment and Diego finally steals a kiss, all under the watchful eye of his uncle. Having realized they were not alone, Diego makes an excuse and leaves. The uncle is very unhappy.

Upstairs in his room, Diego is finally having a normal day, when his friend calls to share the latests breaking news – apparently it has come out that Susana, Carlos’s first wife, has committed suicide. Emilio is freaking out. By the time Gema informs Carlos of this leak and he goes to look for Emilio, the latter is gone to his friend’s house. There he manages to evade his security detail and escape to go about his business. Security detail is in hot pursuit under the loud screams from Carlos. Carlos, meanwhile, exercised his vocal cords and vocabulary quite a bit today. Prior to crap hitting the fan with the news story, he was shaking his finger at Paulina for not trusting him and for having the gall to not only have a lover, but have him be an arms dealer to boot! Carlos demanded she does not sport with his intelligence and confess. (Ahem… sport with your what now, Carlos?)

Meanwhile Santiago comes to some warehouse that Terrifying Terry set the meeting at. He brings several of his men with him, but all of them are easily defeated when Terrifying Cat Woman Terry springs to action from her hiding place atop a table. Wham, bam, boom – all of the henchmen are dead, and Santiago is shot. Terry comes up closer and fires a control shot. Then she sits down and cries. (Even Terrifying Terry has a piece of the soul?).

Back at the mansion Paulina, fresh from Carlos’s opening argument, decides to have one of her own with Nava. They each fire a few carefully crafted shots: Paulina thought she could trust him, and Nava thinks he did enough by saving her life! Finally Paulina asks him what it is that he wants from her. He wants to hear her tell the truth, for once in her life, says Nava. They are dangerously close to each other and before we realize what happened, they go for a kiss. When the kiss ends, Paulina comes to her senses and quickly exits. But just like that, the score board now reads - Nava: 1, Carlos: 0.

Thanks so much for your recap Ria. I enjoy your title but still not a Nava fan. I'm thankful that he saved Paulina; I just can't buy him as a galan. He's too arrogant and, as Susanlynn noted randy. Nonetheless, I do love his relationship with Pedro.

Watching the killers watching Paulina as Santiago was supposed to kill her. I look forward to each of them experiencing a horrible death. It would be fun if Paulina can expose them for the crazed murders they are.

I am looking forward to Nava realizing Paulina's has no scar. And ITA w/you, Paola overacted with Nava but then again she's almost always over the top.

Yes the phone call was a beanie moment. I felt bad Paulina had to learn of her friend and ex-boyfriend's betrayal. With Andrea's confession, perhaps she can be redeemed unlike our candidates for the galan.

I did like that Paulina seemed to get the upper hand on Manuel. He seemed a bit out of sorts when Pau was raising her voice with him.

"Wise one, that Pedro." Yes he is!

Carlos was a complete fail this episode. The unnecessary kiss of Pau in front of Gema and then his jealously routine. It's an unfortunate aspect of tns that most of them have galans being possessive and jealous in creepy kinds of ways.

Indeed Gema waited way too long to stop Emilio :(

I think Diego really does like Liz and his uncle is forcing him into whatever the uncle is doing. Tio is creepy and I still haven't figured out what he's doing and why he's manipulating his nephew.

I understand the writers wanting to make the characters more complicated but Terry's tears and Paola's from yesterday leave me cold. I'm not buying it; they do better having Terry play with her dogs.

Thanks again, Ria

What a thrilling ride this was! I'm talking about your outstanding summary Ria which captured all the nuances as well as the action perfectly. You interspersed humor in just the right places. Excellent title.

The writers seemed to be veering a bit off course but feel they redeemed themselves last night.

"...apparently all of that is erased under the damsel in distress gaze of the First Lady" was my favorite line of many.

"Still, they gloss right over it" was maddening, wasn't it?? I hope Nava keeps seeing the rather glaring inconsistencies and figures things out. The "gruesome threesome" (Terry, Manuel and Paola) have the perfect threat of hurting Pau's mother to keep her quiet.

Interesting speculation about Juana's love life. I was fairly certain Emilio called out "mama" when she left his room (?) And yes to both Ria and Karen, I also thought Gema did not pull back quickly enough when Emilio tried to kiss her. Disturbing in any event, even If that was a little bit of a revenge kiss against Carlos.

"Those who are well-fed, shouldn’t bite the arm, says Paola. (Apparently even Paola finds Terry terry-fying)" was spot on.

"Monse doesn’t let her wallow for too long – she tells her she has much more power than Paola, even as a pretend First Lady and she needs to use it". Pau is extremely fortunate to be blessed with the loyal Monse. The way she managed to get the phone away from her at Manuel’s unexpected approach was inspired. Talk about selfless. All she is getting from supporting Pau is putting herself and her life in danger.
although it did seem that she let that almost-kiss to linger just a little bit longer than I’d think anyone would feel comfortable doing with a teenage kid…)

Karen, Paola and Terry's tears did not move me either! I always remember the movie Black Widow where Theresa Russell actually cried after killing one of her victims. I think it is a stress release and purely unemotional.

Whatever is the motivation of Diego's evil uncle?? He's done little but watch the cameras and smirk. And why does nice Lisette need to be the victim?

I'm still not sold on Nava as a galan either. I'm not seeing the charisma or the heart that are the necessary components. But, I'm going to try and keep an open mind. Well, sort of :)

Ria, sensational, start to finish. Thank you!

Diana

Ria, I didn't put your "although it did seem that she let that almost-kiss..." line in quotes - I meant to, as well as to cut and paste it where I commented on it earlier in my comment.

Diana

Thanks Ria. I love your attention to detail:

(As Paulina take a bite of that pastry, and we – the curious audience – notice that the pastry already had a chunk bitten off. Must mean this is not the first take of this super complicated self-pity scene. Who do you think messed up their lines?)

There is so much going on right now and it's all happening so fast. Most of the time I'm confused. And of course puzzled about many of the characters' motivations. Clearly the world of spying, intrigue, and espionage is too complicated for this simple brain. But you made sense of the episode. Many thanks.

And yes, WHEN is Nava going to notice that Paulina has no cut on her hand? As for Terry, she's quite the cool assassin for someone on her first major outing. All those Ninja moves were impressive. Those thugs were no match for our little gal.

Thanks again...loving the ride so far, confused or not.

Ria, great title and great recap. It does look like Nava is the emerging galán as you put it. Thanks.

A few thoughts:

I like food: The home nurse bringing Paulina an arepa for b-fast and Juana going to make Emilio some of her “raise the dead” soup.

I also liked that Teresa keeps reminding Paola that she needs to pay up already.

I didn’t like Teresa dissolving in tears after her triple kill. Karen, ITA “they do better having Terry play with her dogs.”

I liked that Andrea called and confessed all to Paulina so she won’t be played for a fool by Wilson.

I enjoyed Piedad and Arcadia sniping at each other.

I had to laugh when Nava asked Pedro what was he hiding and, of course, they were interrupted before he could answer.

My question of the night:

Why did Juana stop and react when Emilio called her mamá?

Thank you, Ria, for this spectacular account of all the action. My cable went out , so I missed this episode, but I was able to see it all unfold in my mind thanks to your detailed recap.

I expected Nava to jump out at Santiago, and that he would become Paulina' s protector. Perhaps, a Good woman like Pauline will be the catalyst to changing Nava's adventures with many women.

As for Carlost....ho...hum. I can't even...no...just no. Nothing to see here...enjoy your loved and your political ambitiions. I guess he is fulfilling one of those jobs.

Terry-fying does seem to be a stone cold killer , but so is Paola. The difference is that Terry appears to be confident, clever, and smart, wheras Paola is just unhinged and arrogant. Both women are scary. Gema is unlikable , arrogant, and ambitious. Wow...no role models here.

What is Diego's too up to ?

Sorry...loved was supposed to be " lover" Thank you autocorrect.

Karen - I, for sure, agree with you and not sold on Nava either. I wonder if this is supposed to present him as a galan, or just a distraction, and we will see some character evolution coming up for either him or Carlos, or both. Also I thought that with the fast pace of the show, they didn't have enough moment together to justify making out session. It's okay on Paulina's side, but Nava is making out with his friend's wife as far as he knows.

Diana - indeed! All the times they notice something seems to be off, yet no one follows up on anything. Sounds like it will still be a while before anyone discovers the truth about the twins. And not sure about Molina's (Diego's uncle's) intentions either yet! He said in this episode that he needs information, when he saw the kiss on the cameras. Wonder what information.

JudyB - there really is a lot going on. I actually had to go do a double take on a few things and even go back a couple episodes to make sure I got the names right. It's moving fast and motivations are still puzzling, I very much agree. For example, what in the world is Paola going to do now? Gonzalo is dead. She wants to kill Paulina, what is her plan beyond that? I would have thought without Gonzalo she would go back to her old life, but no.

Jarifa- yes, Juana stopping in her tracks when Emilio called her mama was interesting. Wonder what that is all about. Did she have a son? Although doesn't appear that way based on the story Emilio has uncovered so far...

Susanlynn - very true, Carlos is not impressing in the slightest. Role models are lacking, but they sure are interesting to watch. We discussed this, I think, a few episodes ago - but how the Mexican TN world has changed over even the past decade: independent thinking characters and even cool intrigue at times.

Diego's uncle likely works for the opposition and is spying on the family to get dirt.

The suicide story of the first wife is likely to bite Paulina soon just as Paola's confession about Gonzalo as an arms dealer to Facundo got Carlos angry at her already.

Everyone knows Paola is crazy, which justifies the recent positive changes Paulina is presenting to the family. If Paola won't kill Paulina under the first lady identity I guess it makes sense to make Paulina go crazy and have her committed to a ward. Leaves Paola free forever as Paulina will always be the stand-in.

Ria, thank you for spinning this marvelous tale out of all this fast-paced intrigue.

Karen, I'm not sold on Nava either. And as Ria stated, he and Pau haven't had enough time together to justify that surprising kiss. They are always at odds and there haven't been any looks or exchanges that led up to justify the kiss.

Diana, I heard Emilio call Juana "mama" too and, like Jarifa, I'm wondering why Juana stopped briefly when he said it. My theory right now is that Emilio was mocking her since she told him that they were his family and she is mothering him with the soups...and hey. no tea??

So who the heck is Terrifying Terry? a trained assassin? Those moves she made at the warehouse were not that of an amateur. So were those tears of joy or relief that she got out alive? And Manuel is puzzling to me; he seems to be cold-hearted, but then he looks appalled at Paola's and Terry's ruthlessness.

Carlos--FFW--

Jarifa, while I was glad that Andrea confessed her misdeed to Paulina, her timing really surprised me and over the phone???

Thanks, Ria.

Watching this on screen, Paola is freaking out – yet another murderous plan is about to be botched!!

I got a kick out of the “oh-no!” look on Paola’s face when she was thwarted yet again.

Monse doesn’t let her wallow for too long – she tells her she has much more power than Paola, even as a pretend First Lady and she needs to use it.

Loved Monse’s pep talk. Yeah, you’re the first lady, act like it.

Points to Nava for detecting the difference between Paola and Paulina. I see potential in him. He and his policewoman buddy seem to be friends with benefits only. Cheating on her husband is bad, but neither she or Nava seem to have thoughts of becoming permanent.

I am so ready to find out what Pedro has been hiding. Maybe because I think it will be something that makes me laugh.

Ria: Thank you for detailing the recap from last night's episode. This is becoming the Mexican version of Bay of Pigs: multiple attempts to whack Paulina have failed non-stop.

RGV Chick: Guido (I mean Emilio) is always a JACKASS just like his Daddy, President Jackass.

Rgv Chick, thank you so much for your comment on Emilio and Juana. I honed in on Emilio's calling her "mama" which now seems in context as you explained the conversation.

It was Juana's reaction (as Jarifa initially pointed out) that is the cliffhanger. I think she definitely has a child and it could be one of our cast of characters.

So much to have fun speculating on.

Diana

Niecie - yes, Monse’s pep talk was top-notch. And count me in for wanting to find out Pedro’s secret!

Steve - they are not very successful with their assassination schemes, are they? Luckily for us though!

Great recap, Ria! You really make everything clear in this sometimes hectic tn. I totally agree that we have to put on our beanie caps when Nava didn't notice that Paulina didn't have a cut hand. Not even when she reached out to give him a kiss? I loved the Colombian breakfast scene, even with the missing bite in the pastry. It picks up on the Paulina hates Mexican food motif. I also think that Diego is turning into a really good kid who genuinely likes Lisette. I suspect he may foil his uncle's plans, whatever they are.

Ria--Here to echo all the plaudits for another entertaining recap of a fast-paced episode.

My head was spinning between Paulina and Paola and when Paulina is not Paulina but Paola and when Paola is not there, but pops up everywhere resembling a crazed vengeful, out of control, cold-blooded killer who can quickly put up her hair and behave like Paulina. Oooofff!

Arepas--Traditionally Venezuelan take on Mexican Quesadillas, only made from corn flour. We had our first taste in Barcelona, of all places, but the family had immigrated from Peru. So they must be popular all over northern South America. The dough is thicker and more crumbly than quesadillas. It possibly had the corner broken off in transit, but a bite missing made for a nice joke. If you just google arepas, you will have photos instantly and your mouth will start watering.

Manuel is certainly a mystery. When in his position as advisor to Paola and subsequently Paulina, he's sharp, all business, confident and self-assured, at least when giving orders. When he's with Terry, he turns to mush under her control, having to work hard to tone down the bloodthirst in her actions.

All will be revealed as we go along. I'm glad the mysteries are being drawn out without instant resolution. I'm also intrigued by Pedro and his polygraph failure, Molino and his motives, Nava figuring out the inconsistencies in PyP (and that's not Pasion y Poder), are Diego's feelings for Lisette real and if so, how will he deal with Molina, will Gonzalo's body ever be found, is ex-boyfriend Wilson really important to the story...etc. etc.

Diana, “It was Juana's reaction (as Jarifa initially pointed out) that is the cliffhanger. I think she definitely has a child and it could be one of our cast of characters.” What a thought! Wouldn’t it be something if Gema turned out to be her daughter?

Diana- your assessment of Terry, stress release and not emotional seems spot on. Though she is evil, I actually do believe she cares for her dogs and no one else.

Jarifa - you asked the question of the evening, why did Juana pause?

Susanlynn - ITA no role models here with the exception of Paulina.

Ria and Rgv Chick - so glad others felt that "passionate" kiss was out of left field for Pau and Nava. The writers would have done better by building real tension between the two.

Ria - yes, Terry is no amateur. I'm wondering when (because its not if) she will turn on Paola and Manuel.

Rgv Chick - yes, Andrea's timing was not the best. Great speculation on Gema perhaps being Juana's child. What a potentially fun twist.

Niecie - ITA that whatever Pedro is hiding will be very funny. He's thankfully fun comic relief and not the bad slapstick stuff tns can give us as humor.

Steve- ITA that Emilio is always a jerk just like his dad.

SpanProf - yes I believe Diego is a good kid and hope he foils his uncle's plans.

Anita - great observation about Manuel! That's why I liked that he seemed a bit out of sorts when Pau accused him of knowing Paola is trying to kill her. And great question about Wilson, how will he fit into our story?

Could Pedro have a boyfriend rather than a girlfriend? It would explain his reluctance to be more revealing.

Thanks Ria.

The cliffhanger continues with Pauline
Being rescued. What exactly happened to Paola for her to go bazerk everytim
e something does not go get way. The
Woman clearly needs a Psyc evaluation. Pronto. If I didn't know better I'd had Thought that Emilio was her love child. nix that thought, we know who the dad is so why did his mom committe suicide?.I wonder if carlos not paying any Attention to her had anything to do with it. Cuz look how attentive he is To carlos. Not!

They keep playin that mirror game Nava
Will put 2n2 together and get a clue.
Paola is a bad criminal. Actually a dumb one. Now all Nava has to do is look at paulina's hand and see no cut.
And then maybe think really hard about
Cuts not healing that fast.

And what's wrong with our little scary
Terra-dying hit lady? Did she have a
Smidge of feelings for Santiago? She's
An odd duck she is. I'd like to know what her back story is. Then maybe I can get a laso on manuel's reasons for stickin With this loony toons first lady person.

Who was that mob boss guy on the cliff
Hanger?

Thank you To Ria
Another winner girl!

SpanProf - interesting!! Indeed it would!!

Nina - Terry really is super scary, as is Paola - the psych evaluation comment is spot on!!

Thank you aria. You really filled in some blanks for me. Very clearly written which is great for this detail rich tale

I was interested in Emilio’s character today. Some humor and vulnerability. Cute scene with Gema

Small detail, but at celebration Paulina was not holding her glass by the stem as were the other guests. Full marks for attention to the small things

Pedrito is still fun

Mely
