La Usurpadora - 1998 and 21 years later!

Hi LU Patio. On the heels of our recently concluded LU remake, I thought I’d do this post talking about the original LU and continue the discussion of some of the topics we touched on here throughout our whirlwind series!

Fun fact: La Usurpadora that aired in 1998 was one of the first novelas I watched. I lived outside of the United States back then and TNs were a rarity there, so this was one of my favorite ones for a long time. Graciously, my tastes have changed over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless it was such a great trip down the memory lane to remember the original LU over the past month with this great remake.

So without further ado, let’s take a look! Before we start though: A SPOILER WARNING. If you haven’t seen LU 1998, but are planning to watch it, this post will contain some plot spoilers, so maybe avoid it until you have a chance to catch up with the original.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 25 (Finale) - And then everyone lived happily ever after…except for all of those who didn’t.

Well all good things must come to an end, and what end it was – happy, sad, bewildering, at times beanie requiring, but fiery and original, much like the series. So let's get to it one last time.

Carlos starts out his day fending off the press, as he tries to get into his car. Pascual, who must get triple pay for all these extra shifts he is pulling lately, is right there to tell the press that no questions will be answered and to help Carlos get into the car. Carlos goes to the office and finishes the conversation with Gema, where they plan his resignation announcement. Gema is hurt that she is not the one he is choosing as a life partner, but wishes him well.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 22 - The land that laws of physics have abandoned

It’s four episodes from the end and we can tell by the supersonic speed we are moving at! So the writers tried to do something clever today and keep us guessing through the whole episode, but since we are smarter than that and saw right through the trick, we’ll just work their mystery reveals in a bit earlier.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 21 - What you won't do for love...or revenge.

Paulina and Carlos continue their conversation. He wants her to know that what he feels is real, but Paulina is very confused. She admits that she can’t say that she has no feelings for him, but also doesn’t know if she has feelings for Facundo. What she does know is that her mom asked her to forgive Paola, and she can’t let Facundo put her in jail. There must be other ways to help Paola, says Paulina. (Not sure help is where they are going with the incarceration, dear…) Carlos seems on board with the plan of leniency, if possible.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 19

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 18 - Booze and Drugs and a Funeral

Paola is still asking Olga to say her name when the episode starts, but she turns it around quite drastically by the end, channeling her inner Maleficent. She instructs Tina to proceed with the funeral arrangements and tells her that she will contact Paulina. Naturally not only is that a lie, but she also calls Manuel to tell him of the news and orders him to prevent Paulina from finding out. At her command he tells Paulina that Olga and Paola left the city for a while and are incommunicado. For some unknown reason Paulina, who spent the better part of the episode looking for a cell phone (there seems to be a shortage of those in their residence) to call home and then dialing non-stop, seems to have believed him. Additionally looks like no one questioned Manuel’s giant black eye, so Mexico must be lenient on such things in Presidential households.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 17 - What’s in a name? Turns out quite a bit for a jealous twin.

Paulina, having been dragged back to the hotel, is told to pack as they are leaving for Mexico immediately. Back in Mexico the grandmothers broke in to Lis’s room, found her next to an empty bottle of pills and are at a complete loss as to what to do. Thankfully for them, Gema shows up to save the day. She also has a phone and knows which discreet doctor to call. One of the perks of being a presidential child is that in case you attempt suicide, a doctor will come to pump your stomach at your residence, which is exactly what happens. Lis will be fine they are told. Everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 16 - Romance on steroids develops multiple personality

We are officially less than 10 episodes from the finale, guys. Put your seat belts on, because this one had some sharp turns!

Despite Paola’s efforts to run out and catch Olga, the latter did make it to meet Paulina. They rehash some of the same old: Paulina is happy at the house with this family, who all thinks she belongs there. Paulina always wanted a family, so Olga is happy for her. Olga thinks this is destiny sending her Paola, so that she could give her the love she couldn’t give previously. She needs some time with her and doesn’t believe Paola is bad. Love will save her, says Olga.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 15 - "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt"

So Carlos is in Paulina’s room excitedly announcing that he will travel with her to Colombia. Paulina either panics or also has a secret crush on Carlos, because she does a very poor job of coming up with any excuses at all, and ends up acquiescing to his request. Not only that, but Carlos ends up inviting himself to sleep in one bed with her (because “while he has no problem falling asleep, he does not want to sleep alone”), but promises to behave. They are found still lounging in bed in the morning by Lisette (already made up with her goth style lipstick and eye shadow), who runs downstairs to inform the early bird breakfast crew – Piedad and Arcadia. Arcadia is over the moon, but Piedad looks less than pleased with this news. It doesn’t help that Carlos arrives and reveals their mutual travel plans.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 13 - A secret revealed!

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 12 - Romance on steroids

The new morning for Paulina starts with enjoying the sight of shirtless Nava on horseback, and for Paola it’s recon time around the Colombian house to see where she landed. Olga is excited that Paola is now talking (we, on the other hand, are still unclear whether she was faking it initially.) Paola continues to bond with Olga, calling her “mama”.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 11 - The Parent Trap!

During the blackout at the psychiatric clinic, Facundo gets to Paulina’s room to rescue her. He tells her he knows her true identity and will help. She begs him to not disclose anything, as her mother’s life is in danger. Master villain Terry also finally got to Paulina’s room with her gun, but she is spooked by Facundo and runs out, with him in pursuit. She manages to blend in with the nurses, and pretends to be engrossed in a conversation with a couple of them (who, curiously, pay no heed to the fact that they have never seen this woman in their lives, while working - we’ll note - in a highly secure facility…) Thus Facundo loses Terry and then is promptly asked to leave the premises, when the staff realizes he does not belong there (at least someone is paying attention). No rescue for Paulina for today. Instead she debriefs with the doctor and tells him all about the scare. They decide this blackout was orchestrated by Carlos’s enemies.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 9

Recap by Princess Juju

This is going to be short because it's 1:00 am and I worked like 13 hours today, or rather yesterday.

Manuel is snooping and learns that Paulina has a plan to escape and that Monse, her nurse is in on it. He runs to his lair to inform Paola and Terrible Terry of this development, they agree that they can't attempt to kill Paulina again but perhaps they can neutralize her and a diabolical plan is born. Although I guess this plan isn't as bad as the initial plan to kidnap an innocent woman in order to force her to pretend to be Paola only to later kill her on national tv.

La Usurpadora - Capitulo 8 - A silhouette of a galan emerges

We open with Paulina standing in the foyer of Gonzalo’s house with Santiago pointing a gun at her. Meanwhile at Manuel’s, Paola and company are watching the scene unfold via a live stream (I suppose we are to presume Paola installed a few cameras there while she was lately camping out at that house?). Suddenly, out of nowhere, Nava jumps out and tries to tackle Santiago. Watching this on screen, Paola is freaking out – yet another murderous plan is about to be botched!! A short struggle ensues, where Santiago temporarily has an upper hand but ends up running away. Nava chases him.
