Cuna de Lobos, Capítulo 9 Thus. 10/31/19

What follows is AnonFri's recap for this episode.

Alejandro has still not appeared. Jose Carlos starts to humor Catalina on what she will tell the press about the cancelled wedding. It would be a huge scandal. Catalina maintains her composure despite being a bit nervous.

Before leaving Catalina alone, Jose Carlos mentions that someone will be interrogated and she likely won’t pass and will end up saying that she was hired. (The murder he was framed for?) Catalina immediately calls Diego.

Leonora is throwing up in the bathroom. Alejandro asks if she’s ok. She says she is, but he’s not convinced. Leonora first asks him how his trip to Buenos Aires went. He said it went well, but that he needs to talk to her and doesn’t know where to begin. He tells her he wants her to understand him, in the time that he’s been gone he’s thought over somethings and was able to resolve many doubts and realize what he’s doing with her. Leonora lays out the pregnancy test before him. She tells him “This is what you’re doing to me: I’m pregnant.” This was her fourth test already.

Alejandro is remembering Miguel in the shower, where he promised he wouldn’t regret his decision to tell Leonora everything. Leonora interrupts his flashback by asking if he’s going to say anything. She starts to tear up but claims she’s happy, and he’s speechless. She took it as a good response and hugs him ecstatically.

It turns out Jose Carlos is off the hook for the murder of the lady in his hotel room. Francisco is his defense counsel and signs the documents. “The nightmare is over,” he tells his nephew. “Or maybe it’s beginning,” Jose Carlos vaguely responds.

Jose Carlos is at therapy and inches closer to the memory of when Catalina lost her eye: after seeing baby Alejandro, he saw something in a room and runs away, hearing Catalina curse and go after him. In the present, he suddenly gets up and freaks out because he doesn’t like what he’s remembering. The lady tries to calm him down, but he tells her “There won’t be another session.”

Miguel correctly guesses that Alejandro didn’t go through with the plan. Alejandro confessed that Leonora is pregnant. Miguel still tries to convince him to tell her the truth; he can be a good father while not being with Leonora. “I’m still here waiting for you!” He tells Alejandro. “I’m sorry,” Alejandro replies, getting ready to disconnect from video chat, but Miguel starts to yell. “No! Ask her to forgive you!” He continues that he knew Alejandro wasn’t coming back for him, but like an idiot he still believed him. The chat ends and Alejandro yells in his car.

Catalina finally sees Alejandro. “I’m here now, I hope it’s all worth it,” he tells her. She tells him there’s a week left til the marriage. He gives her the news that she’ll become an abuela. Catalina is ecstatic that her plan is working.

Ambar is watching the news because they’re covering the wedding (or at least the guests). Catalina gets interviewed, she claims she’s very happy and they’ve been waiting for this day. Francisco also claims he’s happy for his nephew. Leonora gets upset at seeing her husband. She starts to breathe loudly.

The wedding is being held at the beachside. Francisco is walking Leonora down the aisle. Jose Carlos imagines himself meeting her at the end, but she’s in front of Alejandro. The ceremony begins. Leonora eagerly responds to the priest. Outside, Miguel is trying to get to the wedding but he has no invitation. He runs past security and stops just in time to watch Leonora accept Alejandro in marriage. Alejandro does the same, after a silent pause. Miguel watches as the priest finalizes their union. Catalina breathes a sigh of relief. Jose Carlos is dismayed. The newlyweds kiss. Miguel walks out and is followed by security. Leonora stares lovingly at her husband. Everyone claps and follow the newlyweds out to congratulate them.

Luis hugs Leonora. Jose Carlos does too, with his sunglasses on. He does the same to Alejandro. When the newlyweds do their first dance, Jose Carlos begins drinking too much. He interrupts the dance to ask if he can dance with the bride. In the meantime, Catalina dances with her son. Jose Carlos is happy to be dancing with Leonora and wishes her to be a happy mother. He confesses that he’s jealous, that Alejandro doesn’t deserve her. Leonora laughs it off. Jose Carlos continues to say that she’s beautiful inside and out. She starts to feel uncomfortable, but Jose Carlos ends the conversation by hoping that Alejandro makes her very happy.

Catalina demands that Alejandro act happy. A great future awaits them now. Alejandro looks so miserable.

Diego is talking to someone. Luis is listening to him complain about the diamond shipment. He hides when Diego walks out of there.

Alejandro is getting a drink and gets congratulated by Jose Carlos. Alejandro just wants to be left alone. Jose Carlos tells him “you’ve accomplished it!” He adds that Carlos was a very smart man: he knew exactly who would sacrifice his life for the money. Then he asks Alejandro if he feels bad at all, any signs of remorse? He sees Miguel approach and hug Alejandro.

The diamond shipment hasn’t left because someone is demanding more money. Luis is eavesdropping. Francisco suggests they hide them in cargo and smuggle them out, but Diego says it’s too risky. Catalina walks away and tells them to resolve the issue. Francisco hides Diego for not being careful enough. “This shipment must get here, whatever it takes.” Diego leaves, with Luis walking out shortly after. Diego notices.

Alejandro wants to know why Miguel is there. He doesn’t want him to create a scandal and ruin Leonora’s life. “What about my life?” Miguel asks. Not getting the response he wants, he continues with “So I’m the problem now? Your mother forced you to marry her, but I’m the problem!?” Alejandro is losing control of the situation.

Leonora asks Jose Carlos where Alejandro is. She notices that he’s drinking too much and tries to stop him. Jose Carlos tells her she probably won’t find her husband because he’s hiding somewhere or is gone already. She takes the drink from his hands and he starts asking if he’s embarrassing her. She says no, but tries to calm him down. Then he blabbering that he knows where his brother is. He asks Leonora to open her eyes.

Miguel claims he will find Leonora and tell her everything. Alejandro tries to stop him. Miguel says he has the courage to do this: if Alejandro won’t do it for them, he will instead. He walks away to find Leonora.

Leonora sees Miguel with Alejandro coming towards her. She hugs Miguel and is excited to see him. Everyone else watches, concerned. He’s about to tell her the truth when Catalina intercedes. Alejandro begins to breathe some relief. Miguel stops in his tracks and has nothing to say anymore, besides wishing the newlyweds to be very happy. He particularly asks Leonora to take care of herself. She responds by wishing him a safe trip. Catalina offers to accompany Miguel on his way out.

“It’s such a shame that you can’t stay here much longer,” Catalina chides Miguel. “You know exactly why I’m here” he tells her. She tells him to stay away from her son, who’s a married man now. Miguel tries to reproach her for doing this to Alejandro and Leonora. Catalina tells him “you’re gonna tell me you actually believe what Alejandro told you? He loves Leonora.” Miguel says that they’re going to regret this. She asks if that’s a threat. He says no, but Alejandro will regret this.

Diego tells Catalina that Luis overheard their conversation earlier. She goes off to speak to him. He tells her he’s a little uraño and that’s why he’s not mingling with the party. Catalina brings up Matias to threaten him. He excuses himself and she hopes that he will enjoy the party. Diego is at her side now, and she tells him she doesn’t care what Luis has heard, because he’s under control now.

Alejandro sits on his bed as Leonora is sleeping. He goes out to the balcony as Jose Carlos walks to the pool downstairs. Jose Carlos puts his left leg into the water and soon picks up a piece of jewelry. Alejandro had just walked past him unnoticed, towards the beach. He starts to walk deeper and deeper into the water. He’s trying to drown himself.

Jose Carlos appears and tries to pull him up to the surface. After some struggling their heads appear above water and Alejandro is upset that his plan was foiled. They both start swimming back to shore. Jose Carlos keeps calling his brother, but Alejandro just walks away.

The next morning Catalina is watching the news of the wedding on her tablet. Gélica says it was a good idea to have done this at the Esmeralda. Jose Carlos appears and asks for a drink, but she chooses to give him something else. Catalina asks if he wasn’t heading back to Mexico City already. Jose Carlos says no, and then says he never understood why his father gifted her the Esmeralda.

Catalina is leaving him at the table, but he stops her and shows her what he’s found: Ambar’s earring, though he doesn't know it. She flashes back to when she tried drowning Ambar in the pool. She takes the earring from him saying it's hers and thanks him and he says “You’re welcome.”

Gélica gives Jose Carlos a green drink. She asks about his inability to control himself yesterday. He thinks it’s a fuss over nothing. As soon as Gélica leaves, Jose Carlos texts Ambar that he misses her.

Diego and Francisco are talking. He has people in immigration/customs and ladies who will help them get the contraband through.

Luis is saying goodbye to his son at the airport. His ex wife doesn’t like this idea, and she wants to know what problem he is in. He says that they will be better off going away to her parents. She asks him why does he always have to be the hero. She doesn’t want anything to happen to him. She kisses him goodbye.

Luis is home and his friend shows up. They’re doing research on Gothier trafficking millions of dollars worth of diamonds. He realizes that company has the authorities bought out. Luis gives his friend a copy of the autopsy for Carlos Larios, the one he hid in the attic. He says Nacho lost his life for making that report. That family is dangerous.

Catalina is holding the earring. She looks at Carlos’ photo in the nightstand and puts away the earring in her drawer. She answers a phone call and after some heavy breathing silence she demands to know who is on the line. With no response, she hangs up. Ámbar dials back. Catalina asks who it is again. She starts to curse.

This was an excellent recap. Thank you for your careful attention to detail - you captured everything so well.

Desperation and despair were rampant. Hearts were broken, lies proffered and believed and life nearly lost.

I was not expecting Alejandro to try and commit suicide. If not for Jose Carlos, I am afraid he might have succeeded. In that moment, I wondered if the two brothers would have bonded had not Catalina sewn the seeds of resentment and jealousy early on.

"She took it as a good response and hugs him ecstatically". Oh, my dear girl. Your mistaking Alejandro's teary sense of doom for happiness is understandable. That is what you wished to see. What a terrible, sad situation.

“There won’t be another session.” Of course there will be. Unless Jose Carlos' memory comes back of his own volition. I think how Catalina actually lost her eye might be a different version of what we are currently being led to believe.

Jose Carlos imagining himself as the groom left no doubt as to his feelings. He seems so terribly alone. But then again, So does Alejandro. Without Miguel.

Now that Luis has his fire lit, it would be great if they could pool their resources and work together.

Credit this TN for being the first/one of the first to show a child with an intellectual disability. Matias is wonderful and brings light and joy to every scene he is in. In terms of the story, Luis sending him to his ex's mother?? Any newbie detective could easily figure out where they've gone. Let's just hope that children being hurt are off limits here.

The episode passed in the blink of an eye. Completely riveting. And the acting is just stellar.

I'm so afraid Ambar will make a preemptive strike she is not yet ready for. She survived Catalina once. I would suspect she will not do so a second time.

Again, thank you so much.

Wonderful recap, AnonFri, thank you!

Best scene: Leonor beating Alejandro to the punch with “her” news that she is pregnant: she cries with joy and he cries from sorrow knowing there is no way out because he is a wimp and he is going to lose Miguel.

Second best scene: At the wedding the camera focuses on the reaction on the disappointed faces of Luis, Miguel and José Carlos.

Looks like Luis is ready to enter the fight sending his ex and child away.

I hope Ámbar manages to continue to aggravate and threaten Catalina. The silent phone calls were just great.

Diana, our comments crossed.

Wow! The wedding was such a “social” event it was covered on tv.

You made an excellent point about Matías and his disability. I like that he is just another character in the story here so much like in real life.

I never expected Alejandro to try to commit suicide. What hell to have to live as somebody else.

Loved José Carlos telling Leonora to open her eyes.

I join you in hoping Ámbar can keep herself under control and out of Catalina’s sight.

Morning Jarifa!

Your insight was spot on with "What hell to have to live as somebody else". So, so true....

And yes, Jose Carlos' heart is in the right place as he tried to warn her. Leonora is sure to be devastated...I fear as to how she will find out and wonder if it will be Luis or Jose Carlos that helps her pick up the pieces. If I were a betting woman, my money would be on Luis as I'm thinking Jose Carlos will not be here in the end.

Great recap Anon Friday. Just enough detail.

I was intrigued by the word "suero" since since I associate that with infusions while hospitalized. But I guess it can refer to any sort of rehydration and José Carlos would certainly need that after a night of heavy drinking. Looked like one of the marvelous green drinks they serve at breakfast in Cancun vacation hotels. All kinds of marvelous herbs, fruits and veggies blended that really start your day off right. José Carlos was indeed on target to call Gélica a "treasure". Wish she lived at my house.

But NOT Catalina! Still, our toxic gal gave me a new phrase to use as she pushed up her flagging skin and said "Se nota mi edad." I hear ya honey. Gravity is working on all of us.

Thanks for an excellent recap of an intriguing show. I'm enjoying Ambar's slow torture of her rival. This will be fun to watch.

JudyB, “Gravity is working in us all.” Thanks for the laugh!

One last comment . . . Great underwater suicide attempt scene with José Carlos coming to rescue his brother. First I thought a shark was coming for Alejandro but it was José Carlos!

Excellent, AnonFri.

I was actually expecting something more elaborate, since Catalina "never does anything halfway," as Francisco said in the opening episode, but then again most people avoid Acapulco these days because of the cartels. This is destroying the tourist industry in Mexico.

It would be way too early for either of the brothers to die. I hope that they both survive and that Luis also does. His ex's lines carry a sense of foreboding to me.

I have to wonder whether Matias' condition created a strain in Luis' marriage. If this series were longer there might be information about that later, but I'm not holding out for it.

JC's memory of that night will be at odds with what Gelica told him, which had to have been what Catalina told her. Catalina was always sewing seeds of discord between JC and Alejandro by getting others to think they were there before they were. In JC's flashback to this incident he was concerned about baby Alejandro whose cries were being ignored. He was not looking to kill him out of a twisted sense of sibling rivalry.

More later.

I think Jose Carlos is the tragic figure of this family: everyone brushes him off despite his pain, loneliness and addictions. It's been several times already where he's always the one looking for Alejandro and trying to reach some form of peace with him, but Alejandro pushes him away with his superiority complex. I suppose Catalina instilled in her son that he was better than Jose Carlos, and so he portrays this to him anytime and anywhere. If the two brothers will reconcile, Alejandro needs to drop his "better than thou" attitude and realize he was set up to hate his brother from the start.

AnonFri

We have a classic TN picture of the possibly workaholic father (Carlos) who trusted his second wife to manage the household and children, in this case despite working in the family business. Somehow he was blind to her hatred of JC and Catalina has shown herself many times already as presenting one face to most of her victims and the opposite one to everyone else.

It will be interesting to see how she will treat Leonora from this point on and whether she keeps her word to Alejandro.

And if she does, how. My money is on her planning to kill Leonora once the baby is born.

All caught up, with nothing to contribute, as it has all been said--including AnonFri's most excellent repast of the rehash of the recap. Please keep them coming. Thank you. (You ought to be known as AnonThu, if that is your night.)

What I can say is that unlike most of Mexico, I've never seen the original, so I'm really into the portrayals of these characters and not trying to make comparisons in my head. The cast is fabulous. And NO, Flavio Medina hardly ever smiles. He takes roles that very rarely require him to smile.

While I enjoyed the first in the Teleseries, La Usurpadora, I like my villainesses scheming and cunning rather than just plain crazy. Cata lives up to that expectation. However, I'm glad she's making mistakes--like putting the gun in Armenta's right hand, not knowing he was left-handed.

I'm also worried about Jose Carlos. He's sticking his last unaffected brain cells into the family business and uncovering unsavory dealings trafficking in (are they blood?) diamonds. He needs to clean up his act first AND go back to that therapist. His last session got him oh, so close, to the truth.

I didn't recognize Leonore at the altar. She sure cleans up well.

Thanks for the recap. I missed a few details in this episode but now it all makes sense.

It doesn't seem like Alejandro will have the balls to tell Leonora the truth anytime soon. When she happlily greeted Miguel and Miguel showed signs of awkwardness I was like "She has no clue what's likely coming her way." I too agree that his near suicide scene was well done. JC doc the right thing.

Now that JC gave the earring to Catalina she might be at least temporarily off the hook and no one will suspect anything. If Ámbar can scare her a little bit first, that's a step.

JC might not be able to repress his memories for long even without therapy I'm sure it's confusing for him but it's also likely correct.

I haven't seen the original but I'm wondering who is meant to be the protagonist of this story. Touching on the foreshadowing nature of what Luis' ex said (that UA pointed out) I kinda thought it could be him. Or it is Leonora because she essentially holds the fate of Catalina, Alejandro and JC in her hands?

Anita, that is a brilliant observation. The pity is that she doesn't know this.

Having said that, she isn't the sort of person to use this to a material advantage. She might pull a massive guilt trip on Alejandro by addressing the moral implications of his actions, she could suggest contesting the will, or she could help JC clean up his act and in the process encourage the brothers to share the inheritance. However, since Catalina has a way of finding out everything, Leonora would be a dead duck under any of these scenarios.

There may not even be a protagonist to this story, but only a lesson in what greed drives people to do.

In the original series, the protagonist supposedly was Leonora (according to the writers) however, as soon as it began to be transmitted, the character of Catalina (played by María Rubio) began to take on greater force that overshadowed Leonora (interpreted by Diana Bracho); for those of us who watched the original broadcast Catalina was the protagonist ...

The new version had to retake the image of Catalina as the center of "Cuna de Lobos", since the audience and the media had been critizacing everything, even before starting to film; for many, it is a sacrilege, not to mention the choice of Catalina's actress (as if María Rubio was going to resurrect to claim her iconic role)

I am more advanced in the chapters, so I will not say more, but it will be very interesting to comment later on the strength that the characters will be taking in the following chapters.

I still wish there were a character I could feel completely sympathetic toward.

Well, not "completely sympathetic" but I always feel sorry for the heinous Diego. He gets stuck with the worst jobs while Catalina and Francisco swan around and enjoy multiple horizontal mambos. And they're downright rude to him also.
