El Dragon #5, 10/4/19: The Truth Kills

Last night we ended with Miguel following Karina off the yacht to her place and them mutually seducing each other, But dang…didn’t take long to forget about Asya. On the other hand, that little stunt is going to cost him because the guys taking the pictures were none other than agents for some government entity. I am guessing the IRS type since he was talking about looking good in front of the Director of the Tax Office. And Miguel is about to become the “Pez gordo,” or fat fish.

We pick up with Miguel still in Miami, I guess the night in bed with Karina gave Miguel enough references to get a meeting with the Russians, because that is where we start this Friday night episode. Miguel's business plan seems too good to be true…a large network of money laundering for various organizations without charging them a penny and without risk. They, of course think it’s too good to be true. But Miguel seems to be operating like a bank. He cleans the money but in turn earns his cut through investing in the stock market. So that’s the plan. He tells the Russians he is trying to run this plan on an international level. The agent played by our friendly Alejandro Avila (Victor, Rulli’s best friend from LQLVMR) is trying to go undercover to see what he can find out from Mr. Sanchez Morris while quite obviously, scoping out Miguel the entire time.

Back to Ciudad Jimenez where Hector is pressing the Secretary about the case of Desiree, and it turns out that the security cameras were out, there were no witnesses and the victims died by gunshots from “cuerno de chivo” which Netflix translated as “AK-47’s”, I had no idea. Hector insists that he wants justice for his sister but the Secretary tells him that everyone wants justice and as long as Carlos Duarte is the “Secretario de Gobernacion” or Secretary of the Interior, the crimes will never be solved. And we already know why, since last night we saw how Epig covered up Duarte's  own homicide.

Looks like Miguel made it back to CDMX, with Tacho on his tail. Adela was there waiting for him…how sweet. Looks like Miguel has plans to transfer the Garza family to the City of Mexico, and wants Adela as his chauffeur. She looks intrigued by the offer, but doesn’t accept immediately. Although when he takes her drink and she takes in back it seemed to be more out of not wanting to concede too soon, then truly turning him down.

Tacho is back meeting with E.Pig. another city…another bar. Telling him that the Japones had returned. At least they have the country right now. Looks like Pig’s intent is to kill Miguel. Using the size of the city as cover and returning to Ciudad Jimenez to make sure it doesn’t look like it was him. He tells Tacho not to fail…otherwise he will take a bullet between the eyes. Looks like Tacho may not be long for this world since I can hypothesize with great certainty that Miguel will not be killed in Capitulo 5. Tacho looked a little worried after that conversation.

Miguel is looking at some office suites with a man, he likes what he sees. Looks like he already has five businesses under his belt, the first two being the ones from Thursday’s episode. He calls Tadamichi-san, his boss in Japan asking to open a branch of the Naga Company. He is given permission and when asked how things are going, Miguel tells him that the only thing keeping him going is his plan. Tadamichi tells “the only reason a warrior lives is to fight, and that the only reason a warrior fights, is to win.”

We finally meet Jimena in the next scene. She is being told by her boss to impress Miguel.

Back to Hector and his investigation and he is getting nowhere. Claudia is telling him they need to investigate…but not the murders, instead Carlos Duarte, find the evidence and the alliances he has with the criminal world. And show everyone that he is corrupt. Hector tells Claudia that he can’t involve her in it for her own safety.

In his conversation with Jimena and her boss, it appears Miguel is asking them to be financial advisors, leaving behind their other clients and focusing only on his business. The boss suggests they become partners. Miguel doesn’t seem to like this suggestion. But Jimena tries to convince him. They tell him if he doesn’t want partners then they have no business. Miguel gets up and leaves.

Tacho is doing business with some kind of weapons dealer looking for the perfect way to take out Miguel. He is also looking for men who are willing to help him. The guy has the men he needs.

Jimena and her boss are arguing over the fact that Miguel left. He is blaming her… she is blaming him. But the conversation takes a turn when he tells her to not play the genius with him and threatens that she could end up in the street, even after everything she has done to get there. He tells her that she is smart, but she has other “attributes’ that he likes better. He sounds like he has something over her. I am sure this story is just developing and we will find out what it is. Because in spite of her arguments earlier, when he starts with the veiled threats and she stays quiet.

Miguel is in bed “googling” Jimena. Looking at her social media pages. She is a Financial Engineering Specialist with a Masters, Doctorate, and post doc work. after his research, he falls asleep and dreams of finding Asya in the tub. We see more of the scene this time than we did initially, he tells her not to go and kisses her and she wakes up and kisses him back. Then he wakes. The dream seemed to have disturbed him and we get a shirtless Rulli, pushing out push ups in front of his bed and then meditating.

Adela is driving Miguel, she took the job? She has been driving him to and fro all day and he is distracted and she is wondering what’s going on. She tells him that if this is going to be her work, then he better pay her well. Miguel tells her to give him a number. Looks like he was looking for someone, because all of a sudden he exits the car. He was looking for Jimena. He asks her out for a drink. She looks at Adela in the car and doesn’t seem too pleased.

Another bar… I think this could be a drinking game… a drink every time someone is in a bar… Mig tells Jimena that you get to know someone better through a meeting than through their resume. She rebutts that she has a good job with a great salary. Looks like he went over her bosses head and decided to hire the talent directly. He offers Jimena a job working for him, tripling her salary without even knowing what she was making and telling her she would be in charge of financial investigation which she translates as Corporate Espionage. He guarantees her a fixed amount if their working relationship doesn’t work. Half a million dollars. She asks him what guarantee does he have that she won’t work for awhile and then take the money and get out. His answer is that she will earn much more working for him. She questions him about the legality of his work, since she investigated. He counters with “is there any investment fund that is completely legal?” She smiles at the answer and then introduces her boyfriend Cesar who just arrived. She doesn’t give him an answer. Miguel sits back down looking pleased with himself.

Miguel tells Adela that he is going back to Ciudad Jimenez for his family. He asks Adela if she thought about his offer. She tells him it’s his lucky day, she will take the job. She tells him that he is in a trial period. When he gets out of the car, her face says it all. Lip biting and everything.

Los hermanos Garza are meeting about the move. Chisca is happy but Jorge is not so sure. They convince him. Then, Dora calls Miguel to tell him about Don Lambertos health. Looks like grandpa is too sick to travel, plus the partners are not going to like it if Miguel up and moves to CDMX. It will go against their code. Unless he keeps his word, they are not going to let him go easily to Mexico. He is going to talk to them. He knows he can’t leave his family at the mercy of E.Pig and his men, without protection.

Meeting with the partners, he tells that that based on the business model, he needs to be centralized and that CDMX is best suited for his work. They tell him that wasn’t the deal. It’s been 8 days. They tell him that they don’t know him well and that they don’t want him disappearing. His family will have to stay in Ciudad Jiménez as collateral. The Japanese comes out in Miguel since they are questioning his word. He tells them “in bushido when a Samurai says he will do something, it’s as if he’s already done it. To say and to do are the same thing, it is the principle of makoto. “They tell him that business needs to be conducted according to their culture. He reluctantly agrees that his family won’t move until the month is up but he needs a guarantee that while waiting for the deadline, nothing happens to his family. They give him their word. Too bad the Pig wasn’t in the meeting.

Chisca is pissed that she isn’t going to be able to move. Miguel tells her that he is trying to learn the business and the codes they live by, Dora backs him up but Chisca is throwing a fit saying that no one can tell her what to do. She is going to cause problems for Miguel if she breaks the promise he made. Dora tells Miguel she will talk with Chisca.

Miguel is back in the house in the city with the Butler, Rosario. They are talking about the family and their delay in arriving when Adela arrives at the door. The butler tries to dismiss her but she pushes her way in and after presentations, their argument turns into a breakfast invitation.

Angel is not happy that Chisca can’t go to the city. He is challenging her to defy her brother. She seems to understand the gravity of the situation they are in because she tells him that he doesn’t understand her family but…she lets herself get persuaded to go anyways, without anything packed. But it looks like they are not going to get out of town so easily because they are followed and forced to stop. She gets out of the car and challenges the men. Angel doesn’t seem to have any idea what to do.

Looks like the hit we were promised at the beginning of the episode is about to go down. Tacho is pulling out guns and handing them to various men.

Peligros shows up to deal with the men. Chisca gets in his truck and Peligros tells Angel to get to the airport and leave town. Seems like Chisca hasn’t exactly let her boyfriend in on what the family business is.

Back in E.Pig’s house in Ciudad Jimenez, the partners are sitting around talking about guarantee that Miguel gave them and the fact that Chisca already tried to leave. Pig seems to know that it was probably her idea and didn’t blame Miguel...yet.

Back in Mexico we see Tacho on the radio with his guys telling them to wait until Miguel passes through there and then they go together. Miguels car passes by and they follow.

Back in C.Jim. at the gates of the ranch, E.Pig is asking to talk to Don Lamberto. What is trying to do, finish him off right there? He says “in good faith” but the guards are suspicious of him with good reason. Peligros gives permission for him to enter, alone and searched. Lamberto is out of bed and dressed and ready to receive The Pig. Dora is arguing that is is bad for his health to do so and that Lamberto should let Miguel handle the Pig. Lamberto insists.

Adela is waiting for Miguel and he invites her to dinner. I love how the flipped the script with having a female driver. She opens the door for him and everything and he accepts it with no judgement. It’s awesome, at least in my opinion. The thugs pull out behind the car.

So long story short, we find out in the conversation between Epi and Lamberto through a series of flashbacks that Epi set up Roberto (Don Lamberto’s son) by using a cell phone that accidentally killed Margarita, Don L’s wife, and editing together an audio recording that made it seem to Don L that his son was trying to kill him and that it was Don L himself that set up his son to get killed. We see Don L’s health rapidly deteriorating as he realizes what really happened. As if killing your own son for any reason is justified. If you want the play by play, read the next bolded section, otherwise skip it.

Lamberto and Pig are talking. The Pig is trying to make small talk and Lamberto tells him to get to the point. The Pig tells him that he has been thinking about his son Roberto lately and tells him that it is time to tell him a story that might interest him. Flashback to Pig and Roberto in a bar having a talk. Agreeing that they should distribute instead of just transport. Roberto tells him that he already talked to his dad and he doesn’t want to, and if the boss doesn’t want to, then he doesn’t want to and there isn’t anything to do about it. That Robert is the boss things will change but until then they have to respect the boss. End flashback…The Pig says that he realized at that moment that if he wanted to change things he would have to do something about it, Don Lamberto has that look on his face like at the meeting, looking confused…Flashback again to Roberto talking to E.Pig about the cell phone he is going to give his dad for his birthday… End flashback and we see that Lamberto is turning every shade of red when Epi asks him where was Margarita when she got my call. He seems to be choking…Flashback to E.Pig wiring the cell phone to explode. Looks like this is how the grandmother died. He was trying to kill Lamberto and she died in his stead. Lamberto relives the whole incident and then Roberto and Epi are back talking about what happened and they argue because he tries to push the issue. Epi is recording the whole thing and then we see Epi working with a tech to edit together what Roberto says to make it sound like he wanted to take out his dad. It looks like he sent the recording to Lamberto and Lamberto is the one who had his own son killed. Lamberto looks like he is having a heart attack as he recalls receiving the recording but he still has enough energy to get out of his seat and push the Pig around a bit, but then collapses. The Pig just stands there and lets him suffer, being a jerk asking him if he wants him to call someone. Epi finally calls Dora. That might explain why he sent Miguel away. If he thinks the business corrupted his son to the point of wanting to kill him, he may not have wanted that to happen to Miguel.

Adela and Miguel are eating and chatting about Jimena and her getting hired and about Adela’s staying as his permanent chauffeur, meanwhile the thugs are parking outside the restaurant. They head in the back door of the restaurant.

Lamberto is dying in the office. Lamberto says “Miguel can’t know…about Roberto.” Dora swears to him that Miguel will never find out and then he dies.

Hope you all enjoyed the recap. I know it was a little long. I need to work on the synthesizing all of our experienced recappers have down so well. Have a great weekend.

Thanks, Esther. Great title and storytelling. Last night's episode was complicated and tough for me to follow, but you cleared it up with just the right detail. Very kind of you to put the tale of Don Lamberto's demise in bold for those who want to skip it. I read it all. Thanks for the name of the actor playing the detective. It was driving me crazy trying to remember which TN I last saw him in. I like the detective, not sure I'm going to like many of the characters, maybe even not Mig. A pleasure reading your recap.

What a horrible man Don Lamberto turned out to be. To put a hit out on his own son. He could've at least confronted his son first face to face. Instead he has others do the hit and they are so reckless to do so while the son is with his wife and kids. Just horrible.

Mig can certainly compartmentalize. Sex with the finance lady was strictly business. His dream of his novia still being alive in the tub was strictly love and longing.

I too like Adela opening the car door for Mig. I want to see her in a cool chauffeur uniform. Funny, we never got a sign that she had any other clients.

We finally meet Jimena. To me she's a finance lady like the other finance lady, but I guess we'll soon see why Mig wants to hire her (other than the fact the writers want competition for Adela with Mig).

Niecie, I understood that Adela was like an Uber driver. Because when Miguel asked her a few episodes back to drive him to the airport, she told him he had to download the app and order a ride like anyone else. And he asked her to make an exception with him. I think that was an easy way to not have to make any more characters or scenes.

As far as compartmentalizing sex with Karina, I wonder whether it would have happened if Asya were still alive, after all it was just business.

I think we can agree that Lamberto was a horrible man, we just meet him in his sweet old grandpa phase.

Remember that Miguel’s mom was heading to a party when her car wouldn’t start so Roberto drove them. He was supposed to be alone. Still, upon the realization that the entire family was there, someone should have been smart enough to pull the plug. Which is why I imagine the freak out happened when they realized that the kids were there and about to explode with the car.

Of course Epig had to be there when Dora promises to Lamberto that Miguel will not find out. I’m sure he is holding on to that secret to use against Miguel for leverage or surprise when he needs it. It won’t be buried with Lamberto.

Ah, Adela was an uber driver. So much detail I can't get. Thanks, Esther. Oh yeah, someday Pig will be sure to use that secret. I've been thinking Pig wasn't a fitting adversary for Mig, but Pig is more calculating than I thought.

Thanks so much ESTHER for sorting out all the murky financial aspects of this. I fear my brain goes into sleeper mode whenever business is discussed. Lots of horror in this one, but especially the sadistic confession of Pig of how he misled Lamberto into killing his own, loyal son. This may bet tougher to watch as time goes on, but am enjoying the start of this and appreciate all the fine recappers.

Hi Esther. Good recap. Good attention
To detail.

So the old man put a hit out on his own son. Not good pops. He Almost got his grandchildren killed. So Why kill the daughter inlaw too? He Didn't make it clear,"don't harm my Daughter inlaw and grandchildren". Is that guy that same one that did the hit still workin
For don lamberto? Miguel will not be
Happy to know his granddad had his parents Taken out.

I like adela better than the blond. It may take awhile for mig to see she is
Better for him than the blond. Or it
Maybe to soon to play match maker. Cuz
He is still grieving Asya. And that's what I think that sexual incounter was
All about with the blond, nothing more.
I don't feel any chemistry there, just empty Sex.

I don't like that pig guy, he is nasty
Evil. Lookin forward to him Being dead
By somebody he thought he could count on. And thats usually how his kind end

As for lamberto being a sweet grandpa
He probly never was. If he could kill murder his son and daughter inlaw,he'd do The same to his grandbabies if they got in his way. What a dirty ol man. I
Wonder if grandma knows he did that?

Thanks Esther♡♡♡

That's one thing that bothers me to no end with telenovela galáns. Why does it take them only a matter of days, if not hours, to forget the "love of their life" and find pleasure (or whatever one might call it) in the arms of another? This is why I'm having trouble swallowing the Adela/Miguel hookup happening almost before Miguel has buried his wife.

I love the writing here and find the interwoven storylines thrilling. Like several other telenovelas that Univisión has aired this past year ('Por Amar Sin Ley', 'Amar a Muerte', 'Al Otro Lado del Muro'), the storyline is a deviation from my much beloved, typical telenovelas; but all the same, I find myself captivated and hate having to wait a whole day or weekend for the plot to progress. Moreover, the writers seem to be able to end each episode at just the right time to build up the suspense.

Miguel Googling Jimena….. for a smart guy doesn't he realize that one can't believe everything (possibly almost nothing) posted on the Internet? Looks like he was viewing a Mexícan version of Facebook, which makes the posted info even more unbelievable.

Did anyone else salivate over Rulli's toned down, beefed up body? OMG, give me SR, WL, or FC any day, any minute, any second over David Zepeda who reminds me of Hulk Hogan. The guy's arms seem to be busting out of his shirts, so unattractive, IMO.

I found the Don Lamberto/Roberto/Epi set up to come out of nowhere, and, therefore, so much more unexpected and exciting!!

Loved the camera director's close up shot of José Elías Moreno's face turning fire engine red and swelling to twice its normal size while listening to Epi's evil reveal.

So does this mean that Dora knows that Don Lamberto had his son killed???? I can't remember if the kids were in the car with their parents when the 'accident' occurred?????

I wish to personally thank each recapper for dedicating their time to bring us such superb and detailed recaps each day. Thank you guys so much.

Thanks you, Ester. Your recap was outstanding. No, it wasn’t too long. I enjoyed all of the details. Some of us “synthesize” less than others. Everybody has their own recapping style.

Well, now it is all starting to make sense. Epigmenio is smarter than I initially thought.

That is all for now.

Yes, Jarifa I agree, Epigmenio is definitely much more intelligent that I originally thought. He will make a valuable rival. And it much have burned him when Do Lamberto told him at the meeting that Miguel was better than all of them combined. He obviously thinks highly of himself. That being said, thanks for positive feedback. I was a little nervous this being my first and all. But I have read so many of the wonderful recaps for shows I feel like I know what a reader like myself wants. It would be easier if this particular show didn’t change scenes every two seconds. My style is details, I enjoy the dialogue and like to pull things out to quote that strike me as important.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Esther

Great job, Esther. Stories like these need those details.

Irene Baeva's hair looks horrible here. There is no shine to it and the color doesn't suit her at all. However, she is being cast again as the sexual interloper intent on stealing the galan from his rightful lady fair. So what else is new?

It'd good to see Alejandro Avila again.

The Pig will be more dangerous than El Ciego in PASL2 because he is totally operating in cold blood.

Whether Dora knew about Lamberto setting up his own son is something we should find out about eventually, especially as we all know that no secret ever stays buried in novelas.

Adela is the chauffeur right? The blond is the one he hooked up with. Adela's Hair is long and dark brown &
Beautiful.
Irene Baeva looks better with dark hair. I quess it's dyed for the story.

Esther, thank you for all the time and talent you put into that very detailed recap . Great job.

This show is darker than I like , but I guess I will give it a try.

Adela is the chauffeur, the hook up was Karina the Russian contact and Jimenez is the Financial Specialist, Both the latter are blonde.

That’s Jimena not Jimenez

I like that title. I have only seen the first half and will wait to comment after. :?))

FWIW, it was Urban Anthropologist who came up with Pig's priceless soubriquet. I could only shorten Miguel's name to Mig but I do like the way the two rhyme.

Esther, what an excellent recap and title! Thank you so much for taking the leap into recapping; you're off to a great start...just enough detail and the writing was superb.

It's so hard to believe that Lam had his own son killed regardless of whether the tape was true or not. I would understand possibly teaching the son a lesson or distancing him from the family, but to kill him is unforgivable. If Dora knew about it and stayed with such a horrible man, then she isn't much better.

Victoria, "Why does it take them only a matter of days, if not hours, to forget the "love of their life" and find pleasure (or whatever one might call it) in the arms of another?" That is one thing that is so unbelievable about TNs and even English soaps. It's "out with the old ..in with the new" as if they were just replacing an appliance or a car. We jsut have to keep repeating Judy's infamous words. "it's just a story; it's just a story..."

And yes, I'm sure there was much salivation when Rulli was doing those push-ups to relieve his "frustration" :-)

Nina, "I don't like that pig guy, he is nasty
Evil. Lookin forward to him Being dead
By somebody he thought he could count on." I can't stand the man either and I can;t wait to see what anvil he gets. Does he have a son or daughter...maybe one of the will kill him.

JudyB, "I fear my brain goes into sleeper mode whenever business is discussed." Ahh the wonders of recording...I just FFW through those scenes as well as the dark ones...then I just read the recaps to get a briefing. My only interest in this show right now is the relationship between Adela and Mig.

Thank you so much for the detailed recap. Especially the bold section. But I cannot find any mention of the strange scene where Miguel follows some other dude into a party of men dressed as women (drag queens) and Miguel interrupting what seemed to be a sex scene of the guy who earlier put a pair of high heels into his sack and later turned up in drag. What exactly was the deal that Miguel wanted the guy to agree to? Confused

Anon 5:42, your question is about "El Dragon, but I'll go ahead and respond here; the strange scene you are referencing is here-- http://caraycaray.blogspot.com/2019/10/el-dragon-10319-4-putting-plans-into.html (fifth paragraph from the bottom).

Ester
I would never have guessed that you weren't a regular Caray Recapper. Your recap flowed with such style and I absolutely loved the little snark you introduced at times.
Sebastián Rulli is such a hunk, it's hard to take him seriously when he's in his bad boy attire.

Ester, I had a busy weekend because it was my husband's birthday, but I wanted to just stop by and thank you for your superb and detailed recap. Boy you don't miss a beat. I must have missed bits and pieces of this and you filled it all in beautifully. Thank you again. We shall proceed to watch what happens tonight.

Thank to everyone for all the wonderful feedback! I felt very welcomed and appreciated. And kudos to all who do this regularly, it is indeed a labor of love. I look forward to the next couple of months with you all.
