Cuna de lobos, Capitulo 25 Martes Gran Final 11/26/19: Unspeakable

Once in a while one finds a criminal whose evil is not easily explained. Someone like Catalina Creel defies definitions outside of “psychopath.” However, that is too small a word for her. I was raised Catholic, so I still believe that there is unspeakable evil in this world and – sadly – that we cannot explain every example. I do not know whether I believe in reincarnation but if that were true perhaps Catalina is the reincarnation of someone the likes of LiviaDrusilla or perhaps Belle Gunness, who was never caught. – D.D.
Vega's body was zipped into a body bag and wheeled out of the makeshift operating room.
Luis' phone rang with good news. He called José Carlos to tell him that they had succeeded. He took his keys and left.

Julius skyped with Francisco.
Vega isn't working for us anymore.”
Why?” Julius asked.
You don't want to know. Are you still with me?”
Of course, Mr Larios. You command and Julius obey.” There was a note of sarcasm that Farncisco probably didn't get.
Everything is changing. Gothier will no longer exist.”
That's interesting.”
A knock on the door caused Francisco to end the call and close his laptop. Miriam entered his office.
Excuse me sir, but the police are here asking for Señora Catalina.”

Francisco left his office and called Catalina from his car while he was on the highway. He was nervous.
You have to get out. The police are coming for you.”
They have no evidence against me,” she said, without feeling.”
You've been too careless. They have witnesses. Also financial records and they're well-organized.”

Elsewhere several men were packing up diamonds and rolling them into cigars. Federal police barged in and began making arrests.

Listen welll,” Francisco said. “It's better to remain silent. This must come from José Carlos' investigation.”
I still have a few things to resolve.”
I don't have time to come for you. You have to get out now!”
Don't worry about me, Francisco. I will decide where we will meet again.”
We have to meet now!”
Wait for my call.”

Francisco went to his apartment with a large bag. He laid his cellphone and passport on it as he took a pistol out of a safe. José Carlos called but he did not answer.
That call was followed by a text message from José Carlos informing him that he had to call him immediately because there was a warrant out for his arrest. Francisco texted back “I will give myself up. I will communicate with you later.” He called Catalina.
The moment has come, Francisco,” she said. “This will be the last call.”
Where will we meet?” he asked.
She did not answer.

A tall young man in a black suit approached Jaime and introduced himself as Agent Hernandez.
What about Hector?”
He called in sick and they called me only a moment ago.”
Jaime did not have a good feeling about this.

At the Larios mansion José Carlos led a group of heavily-armed federal police in.
Catalina! Catalina!” He shouted for her. The police went in every direction. All were heavily armed. The maid appeared.
Where is Catalina?”
She left with suitcases.”

Agent Hernandez appeared at Leonora's home. She did not recognize him.
Where is Jaime?”
He shoved her inside and Catalina walked in, armed with her favorite pistol.
I told you we would see each other again.” She knew that Leonora noticed the gun. “Did you really think you'd be free of me so easily?” Leonora began backing away.
Catalina, please, leave us alone.”
In reality I've come to say goodbye.” She backed Leonora toward the top of the stairs. She was probably looking to push her but Leonora held onto the banister. “You will give the baby to me.”
No. Edgar is my son. He needs me. Please, Catalina. I am not looking to hurt you, please.” She backed down the stairs carefully.
Shh. Shut up,” said Catalina.
Don't touch him,” Leonora said.
But Catalina was too fast. She swiped at Leonora's shoulder and shoved her aside.
Leonora hit the chest of drawers, opened one, and pulled out the pistol Ámbar had given her. She pointed it at Catalina.
If you touch him I will kill you. Do you hear that?”
Catalina paused.
Leave my son alone! Do as I say!”
Catalina turned around and faced Leonora.

José Carlos was on his way. He called Luis, who was already on his way out.
Luis, get to Leonora's apartment as fast as possible. Catalina was not in her house.”
Francisco seems to have disappeared. The police didn't find him.”
He sent me a message. He was going to surrender.”
I'm going to Leonora's apartment. I'll see you there.”
Try to keep her calm. Don't let her worry.”
I will. We'll succeed.” He took his helmet off the rack near his motorcycle.
We can't relax until we see Catalina in prison.”

Catalina smiled slowly, as if she were about to castrate James Bond.

Her accomplice shoved Leonora and Catalina kicked her aside so roughly she fell on the floor. Catalina saw blood on her forehead and realized she was unconscious. She looked at baby Edgar and said “Alejandro.”
A moment later she was carrying him up the steps leading to the car park for Leonora's building. Luis had just arrived and dismounted his cycle.
Give me the baby,” he said, reaching. “The police are on their way.”
She shot him and quickly got into the back seat of her car. “Agent Hernandez” was driving.
Leonora opened her eyes and saw her pistol lying on the floor. She checked the pram and saw that Edgar was missing. Before getting to her feet she was yelling for help.
Catalina looked at her crying grandson and said, “We're going on a long trip, little Alejandro.”

As Luis was being wheeled into the emergency room with Margarita nearby, Leonora went to the federal police, telling Lt Aguilar what happened.
Catalina is probably on a plane this minute,” she said.
We're not going to let her escape; don't worry,” said Aguilar as they entered the surveillance room. “The airport is well-covered and other authorities have been alerted. Catalina Creel's photo is being well-circulated in the media.”
What about the car she got away in?” asked José Carlos.
We are waiting for information on the cars associated with her home.”
It looks like we found her,” said one of the agents at the bank of computers.
Put it up on the main screen.”
José Carlos looked and said “That's it. That's her car!”
Send the information to my cell. Let's go!” said Aguilar.
He, José Carlos, and Leonora ran out.

The entire emergency medical team was working on Luis. They needed to use the defibrillator.

The federal police closed in on Catalina's car, but it was abandoned.
Leonora became hysterical for a moment and collapsed on the pavement next to it.

Luis' pulse was 128 as the doctor located the bullet, which was in his lung. The doctor gave instructions.

Francisco was driving toward the meeting point.

Aguilar, José Carlos, and Leonora returned to headquarters and José Carlos said they had to find Francisco because he was the only person who could help them.
We have information on the car he escaped in --”
That won't do any good,” Leonora shouted. “It's a waste of time because Catalina is escaping. How I don't know.”
This is our best option,” Aguilar said. “The traffic in that area is such that it would be a waste of time. I'm sorry.”
And why aren't you tracing Francisco's phone?” she asked. “That should help in some way.”
We intended to, but there is no signal. What's important is that he's still in the city. Now let's get back to work.”
Leonora was getting tired as well as frustrated.
Why me? Why me? Why not pick on some idiot and ruin his life? Why me? Why?”
Leonora, do not despair,” said José Carlos. “I swear Catalina will be found.”
I don't care if they find her or kill her.  I want my son back!”
She continued crying and got up. She went to the end of the room where Ámbar listened to her.
José Carlos is working on it. Everyone here is working. There is nothing more important than recovering Edgar.”
Nobody is thinking about the two months I almost didn't eat and I froze and this woman is capable of killing him – ”
Well, yes, but don't think about this. You can't think like this. You need to keep your health, your sanity when you confront things like this.”
What I can't believe is that Francisco helped her. I thought he was different.”
Yes. I also thought that until I knew they were lovers. When I saw the proof, the pictures in her house in Acapulco, on the yacht, I swore that if I caught Catalina I'd kill her with my own hands. I swore it.”
Focus on the path of Francisco Larios,” Aguilar directed an agent via the radio. “Watch him and report on whatever he does.”
Lt Aguilar, what about the areas of the city that aren't monitored?” asked José Carlos.
.“There are a few roads with fewer points of control.”
Catalina has a house in Acapulco. It's reached by a federal highway.”
As Aguilar went to check that José Carlos answered his cell phone. Neither saw Leonora leave in a hurry.
Margarita, how is Luis?”
They're looking for a specialist.”
What are the doctors saying?”
They have to operate as an emergency because the wounds are very serious. Trap that woman, José Carlos. Arrest her. If anything happens to Luis she has to pay. She has to pay for everything she's done.”
José Carlos ended the call just as Ámbar identified Catalina's Acapulco house.

The doctors removed the bullet in Luis' lung to be matched by forensics to the others.

Aguilar called his agent on the radio. “Go to the house in Acapulco but don't go inside. The only important thing is the baby's safety.”
At that moment José Carlos and Ámbar noticed that Leonora was not there. She had gone home to get her pistol. She took one glance at the empty pram, got into her car, and took off.

Catalina drove up to the meeting place, parked, and exited the car, looking around for Francisco. She left Edgar in the back seat as she stepped into a more visible area.
She looked out over the water and then to the access road where she saw Francisco's car approaching. She went over to the erect surfboard sign and he pulled up right next to her.
I acquired three perfect passports,” she said, handing them to him.
Three?”
Alejandro and you,” she said.
Edgar.”
His name is Alejandro and from now on he is our son.”
What are you talking about?”
Alejandro is coming with us.”
How? Where is he?”
He's in the car.”
This is too much,” he said as he began walking toward the white car.
Francisco, where are you going? Francisco, listen to me.” She followed him.
Edgar is not your son, Catalina.”
His name is Alejandro.”
Alejandro is dead, Catalina. You killed him and you're not going to do the same to this baby.”
He walked faster and she ran to overtake him.
Don't touch him! Don't touch him!”
You're not going to do this. You don't have to do this, Catalina. Go wherever you want, but without the baby.”
I thought you were going with me.” She looked genuinely confused.
Yes, but you and me. Edgar has nothing to do with this.”
I'm taking the opportunity for us to have a family like you couldn't have with Ámbar.”
Don't you realize that we don't have time? Everything is over. The police are after us, all is over in Sierra Leone, José Carlos closed our accounts and there is no Gothier. The evidence is in about the murders you did. Catalina, we have to go, but without the baby.”
You turned in all this information?”
You expected otherwise? Since I did this I can't go on.”
You expect me to trust you?”
You killed my brother. You tortured Ámbar, you killed our own son.”
There are things that no man can lie about. I know you too well.”
You knew I always wanted a son. I gave up on the possibility. You didn't share with me that Alejandro was my son. You killed him.”
Don't you realize the opportunity that we have this child? I am making it up to you.”
This is the only opportunity to save ourselves. Edgar would complicate things for us. We don't have time. Trust me. Calm down.” He kissed her, then backed away a few steps then started for his car.
He should not have turned his back on her. She turned on the ignition and floored the accelorator. He turned around and barely saw her evil face through the windshield before she sped right into him.
He was thrown up onto the front hood against the windshield, then the roof of the car from which he fell, landing on the pavement.

Leonora was on her way to Acapulco.

Luis was lying in his hospital room with a ventilator and hooked up to several monitors. Margarita entered his room.
Matias is waiting for you outside,” she said. “You promised us that we would all be together. You have to keep your promise.”

Leonora remembered something Ámbar told her There is hidden evidence in the house in Acapulco and in the yacht. I swear if Catalina were here I would kill her with my own hands.

After dark emergency personnel arrived at the overpass near Acapulco and picked up Francisco. They put a neck brace on him. He was still alive.

Leonora arrived at the marina at about the same time. She walked down the boardwalk toward the yacht as Catalina was finishing a call.

Leonora approached the yacht with her pistol drawn just as Catalina was stepping out onto the deck.
Give me my baby.”
How nice of you to come.”
Give me my baby!”
Just in time for us to say goodbye. Alejandro and I will be going on a very long trip.”
I will not repeat myself again.”
You're not going to shoot. You are an ingrate. I gave you an opportunity to be a member of this family, gave you an opportunity to have a baby with Alejandro, but you are nothing. Shoot. I dare you. Shoot!” She stepped a little closer.
Leonora tried but failed. Catalina grabbed her arm, disarmed her, and pointed the gun back at her before knocking her off her feet back against the very area from where Catalina had dispatched her husband.
[???]” She cocked the pistol.
Give me my baby, please.”
Do you want to see your baby? I will give you that pleasure. Get up.”
Leonora got up, hands in the air. Catalina was too close behind her
Move! Let's go.”
She forced Leonora down below the deck. Leonora heard Edgar fuss and cry and she reached down to pick him up.
Don't touch him!” She looked up and Catalina aiming the pistol at the back of her head. “I'm telling you don't touch him!”
Catalina pulled her back by the arm, continuing to aim the pistol at her head.
No, no, no, Catalina, don't do this,” she started crying. Edgar cried even louder as Catalina threw Leonora onto a bed in the room on the other side of the stairs and barred the exit, still aiming the pistol.
He's crying, please!” Leonora's cell began ringing. Catalina put out her right hand.
Give it to me, the cell phone,” she said. She looked at the screen. “It's José Carlos. Would you like to say goodbye to him?”
At the other end, José Carlos was getting worried that she had not answered. He ended the call before it went to voicemail.
She didn't answer. I have the feeling she's done something crazy.”
She was desperate,” said Ámbar.
Lieutenant, do we know how we're going to find Edgar?” José Carlos asked. Then his cell rang. “It's Leonora.” He answered. “Leonora, do you hear me?” There was no reply. “Leonora, do you hear me? Where are you? We're listening.”
Hello, dear,” said Catalina. She then aimed the phone at Leonora.
Catalina?” Leonora cried at the sound of José Carlos' voice.
Aguilar gave an order to the others and yelled “Where is the baby?” Catalina pulled the phone back.
Calm down, the baby is fine.”
Catalina, understand one thing,” said José Carlos. “You are surrounded. You won't be able to escape.”
That will depend on you. All this is your fault. If you had died of an overdose none of this would have happened.”
You can have what you want. You can have the inheritance. You can have Gothier. You can have both but please let Leonora and the baby go. Please, Catalina.”
Aguilar made a gesture to get José Carlos to keep Catalina on the phone so they could locate her signal.
No, I don't want that,” she said.
Then what do you want?” José Carlos asked. “Tell me what you want and I will give it to you. Tell me!”
I want you. Your life in exchange for Leonora and the baby.” She then ended the call. Aguilar said to continue but he had lost the call.
What does she want? What did she ask for?” Ámbar asked. José Carlos sat down.

Catalina aimed at Leonora's face
It's over for you, Catalina,” Leonora said. “You can't escape.”
No. You can't leave. It's part of my plan.”
Edgar started crying again.
He's crying. Let me see to him. Please. Please.” She slowly stood but before Leonora got to full height Catalina hit her on the head with the butt of the pistol.
She fell back on the bed. Catalina looked at her as though she were so much garbage.

The call wasn't long enough,” Aguilar said.
The call is the key to finding where Catalina is hiding Leonora and the baby,” said José Carlos.
No, that isn't it. What did she say?”
That she will call.”
No, that doesn't make sense. We need to buy some time to get there.”
Ámbar came in with her cell phone.
Francisco is in Acapulco. She ran him over.”
What happened? She ran him down? Is he alright?” José Carlos asked.
I don't know.”
Where is Catalina hiding?”
Wait,” said Aguilar. “If the both of them are in Acapulco and neither is at the house, where are they?”
The Gothier yacht,” said José Carlos. “The yacht is in Acapulco. Catalina has to be looking to escape on the yacht.”
That makes sense,” said Aguilar. “Call the marina,” he said to the others as he left with José Carlos and Ámbar.

The next morning Margarita and Matias were allowed into Luis' room. He was still asleep, possibly sedated. Matias tried to get him to wake up and Margarita told him his father needed to sleep. The boy complied and she took him out of the room. He looked over her shoulder at his father and saw that Luis looked about to open his eyes. Margarita stopped and allowed Matias to lie next to Luis. He did not wake, but his breathing appeared to be normal. He turned toward the child. Margarita stayed at his other side and leaned over the bed.

Catalina stood on the boardwalk in her black catsuit, staring out at the water.
She checked Leonora's cell phone for a text message, then threw it away into the water as she walked back to the yacht. She went inside to the dashboard and started the motor. It automatically blew the horns indicating that it was about to cast off.
Leonora woke at the sound.
She had been bound and gagged in the cabin she had been thrown into the night before. Her hands were tied behind her back with rags. Her feet were bound together. Catalina removed the tether to the dock and went back to the controls.
Leonora discovered that the bindings were not too tight and freed herself as the yacht left the dock.
José Carlos, Aguilar, and other federales arrived and José Carlos pointed out the correct dock. They saw that the yacht was already out on the water and Aguilar shouted they had to find a boat to follow in.
They found the marina's launch quickly enough and set off in pursuit, along with another boat belonging to the marina.
Gentlemen, you must be alert. We're only a few minutes behind it and we'll be upon the yacht shortly. This boat is much faster.”
And if we don't find them where are they?” José Carlos asked.
Don't worry. We are doing the best we can.”
You have no idea what Catalina is capable of.”
Oh, I do. I know all about this woman.”
But what we don't have is time.” José Carlos went to the rear deck.
Don't worry, José Carlos. Calm down.” said Aguilar. “We know what we're doing. These people are professionals. We will find her. Let's go up front.”

They increased the speed while looking at the tracking screen.
While Catalina concentrated on remaining ahead Leonora quietly exited her prison.

She had no way of knowing that Catalina picked up her gun from the dashboard and walked away from the controls. Catalina caught her on the stairs.
And where do you think you're going?” Again, the gun was pointed at Leonora's head.
Catalina, please. I was unconscious the whole night. I need to eat and I want to see my son.”
Go back into the cabin. I'm telling you to go back into the cabin.”
When Leonora didn't move Catalina seized her arm to force her. That was when the federales sounded the alarm. It startled Catalina for a second. Aguilar picked up a megaphone.
Catalina Creel, give yourself up. You are surrounded.”
You can't escape now,” said Leonora.
I will escape,” said Catalina through her teeth. “And I will escape with [???]”

She grabbed Leonora and forced her up on the deck in front of her as a human shield. José Carlos took the megaphone. By then they were very close to the yacht.
Catalina, give yourself up. You can't outrun the launch.”
Don't come closer or I'll kill her and the baby,” she yelled. She held the pistol right next to Leonora's head.
Catalina, you have me. Let Leonora and the baby go.”
They continued to approach. Leonora continued to struggle against Catalina's grip.
The launch got closer and Catalina shoved Leonora overboard.
She fired at her as she was hitting the water.and ran back inside the yacht.
José Carlos jumped off the launch and swam toward Leonora.

Catalina opened the access to the motor of the yacht and placed a time bomb in it. The clock began ticking.
José Carlos found Leonora and kept her from falling deeper. He began swimming to the surface.

The clock ticked down and when it hit zero there were multiple explosions. The Gothier yacht burst into flames and began to sink as José Carlos and Leonora broke the surface of the water.

No, no, NO!” she screamed. “My son! No! No!”
She continued to scream as José Carlos brought her to the launch.

Within an hour or two the launch landed at the dock and medical personnel took Leonora to the nearest hospital. She lay in bed thinking of her latest ordeal and cried again.

Margarita was at Luis' bedside updating him on these events.
Catalina killed him,” she said. Luis' eyes opened in shock. “Leonora is alright but Edgar died. Catalina killed him.” She began to cry.
Catalina went below deck on her yacht and it exploded.”
Luis thought back to his conversation with Leonora when he first saw the baby. When he told her that the child was her reason to live.

Ámbar visited Francisco. He was wearing prison khaki. She was subtly sarcastic.
You had hopes that this would be alright. Nothing surprises me anymore. She was a vulture. I was your wife but you preferred that. You did yourself in well.”
I escaped.”
The yacht exploded. She died in an accident.”
That's alright. Leonora forgave me. I need you to tell José Carlos --”
I'm not going to do a thing for you,” she said. “If you have anything to say to José Carlos, you will need to do it yourself.”
Did he kill Catalina?” Ámbar looked at him like he was insane. “She loved the sea. But she hated him as she did my brother.”
Edgar died.” Ámbar began to cry. “He was with her.” She wiped away her tears. “”You have this on your conscience. I hope you remember all your life, your son, and your grandson. They died because you are a coward.” She turned her back on him and left.
There was no way on earth Francisco would forget anything about his association with Catalina. Her attempt on his life had destroyed his legs and they had to be amputated.

Leonora stood at the edge of the sea and looked out. José Carlos came for her.
Leonora, we have to go,” he said.
This cannot be happening,” she said through her tears. “He will return. He will return. I will search on the name I gave him. Edgar.” She cried harder.
Don't do this to yourself. Please come with me,” he said.
I will never forget anything you have done for me. I could never be more grateful. You are such a good man, José Carlos. I would have loved to have a normal life with you and return the love you have for me. But in all these days I can't forget the pain your family caused me. I don't want to forget you.”
He walked away slowly, starting to cry himself. She cried out to the sea as though pleading with the gods, before falling to her knees and becoming unintelligible.

She returned many times to the same spot, thinking of her son, Alejandro, her unjust arrest, Alejandro's betrayal made in ignorance, and José Carlos' last promise to Alejandro.

A promise he now kept by going to see her at a distance.

Five years after the yacht exploded Luis called on Aguilar with a flash drive and a large file. They sent for José Carlos.
What are you doing here, Luis?” he asked.
You have to see this.”
José Carlos almost went into shock at what he was shown. He drove out to the beach in an all-terrain vehicle and found Leonora. He ran as fast as he could.
Leonora. Your son is alive.”
There was a photo of a woman who looked like Catalina sitting on a beach with a little boy.

Catalina thought back about when she had taken the baby.
She had handed him to the false agent Hernandez during the night when Leonora was unconscious in the other cabin. He left on another boat. The baby was not on board the yacht when she set the bomb.
She had jumped off the port side just before the first explosion and swam to the pink and white buoy. She could barely hear the voices of Leonora, José Carlos, and the federal officer.
But that did not matter; she was sufficiently amused that her distraction worked as well as it did because of how they had underestimated her intelligence. Using the falsified passports she had not stayed in any one place long enough to be caught.

She had not been accustomed to the cold weather, but little Alejandro seemed to love snow and he was fascinated by the sight of the falling ice on Niagara Falls. He was adaptable, just as she had been when needed.

Epilogue

If there is a quantum of mercy in this shocking tale we can be grateful that Catalina Creel is merely a malignant narcissist just out for herself. Had she been a terrorist there would have been many more dead bodies than the ones we now know about. I am wondering how many others there really were. I would not doubt that she murdered small animals in childhood but did she have the same seeds of appetite for murder as Mary Bell or Alyssa Bustamante? Did she hold back until murdering Gloria Larios? Did she kill anyone between Gloria and Carlos? Since there is no criminal record prior to these events we cannot be sure there weren't other victims and since she is a highly accomplished liar, we will probably never know.

A friend from Interpol called to let me know that they just captured Catalina in Canada. She was at Niagra Falls. Since Mexico doesn't execute, the Canadians will have no qualms about extraditing her back to Mexico. It is essential that this be accomplished quickly It will be traumatic for the child, but at least he will not meet his father's fate.

Luis Guzmán will have the honor to cover this and to ultimately write the novel this inspires. For now I am off to London to enjoy the winter holidays. I will return; you can be certain of that. – D.D.

Here it is, amigos.

I was shocked, but not surprised. There have been ambiguities in the finales of GG's other series so I did wonder about this possibility. We don't have to like it, but I hope I've provided the proper postscript for this.

If there is another purpose to choosing this ending I think it is provided as a cautionary tale. That corruption of the legal process has far greater consequences than merely some wealthy trust fund brat gets away with rape and murder (as in the Martha Moxley case. What we have seen here is what happens when such things run amok.

I will post questions to ponder later. I'm on my way out for a good breakfast.

Thank you, Urban for ending this in grand style. I loved D.D.’s epilogue.

To say I am BUMMED is an understatement. The ending spoiled the entire series for me. I had enjoyed the series so much until they cut out what to me was a major plot line from 1986 which I thought made Catalina Creel the epitome of villains and the story one of the creepiest I have ever seen but more about that later when Urban and I discuss differences between the 1986 version and this one. If I hadn’t seen the first, I would have been okay with the ending because the “good guys” especially Leonora weren’t thinking. At least Catalina had a brain and knew how to take action. I wanted to slap Leonora into reality when she didn’t shoot Catalina from the get go. Then later she hadn’t taken the safety off. She was just a blubbering mess. Remember: RATS CAN SWIM.

Thank you, UA. OMG ..... I.hate.this.show. I don't know what else to say. Sooooo unspeakably depressing. Evil triumphs. Uff.ugh.

UA: I'm NOT shocked about this at all. I KNEW Catalina was always 100+ steps ahead of everyone else.

Susanlynn: Sometimes most Telenovelas don't always have a typical happy ending.

At least Francisco & the accomplices are in prison for their complicity in the human trafficking & multiple deaths.

Jarifa: Ambar moving on with her life. Leonora should've whacked Catalina when she had the chance!

I expected Francisco would do time. Since he turned in evidence he won't do the usual time for his crimes. However I don't know how much time one does in Mexico for human trafficking. That probably also won't cover the crimes in Africa.

He might do time for failure to report anything he knew about Catalina's murders but it isn't clear when the light bulb really went on. Both she and Ambar were right in describing him as a coward.

Urban, you conveyed every single nerve racking moment perfectly. Your screen shots worked beautifully in tandem with your superior recap. Truly exceptional in every sense of the word.

I would like to thank you, Jarifa and Anon Friday for your generous time, abundant talent and graciousness for providing exceptional recaps lo these many weeks. And they were. Each and every one. You shone a light in every dark nook and cranny. Gracias.

Jarifa, now I'm very curious as to the detail you are alluding to. "Rats can swim". Indeed.

I'm not quite sure where to even begin.

Love and obsession.

Obsession was Catalina, in every sense of the word.

The startling reveal for me was the realization this was a love story. For Luis. For Leonora. I have no doubt he cares about Margarita and Matias. Yet his selfless quest, borne of love was to ferret out the truth and seek justice for Leonora. There was likely a germinating seed that Catalina wanted her grandson and that she might well have spirited him away before the explosion. And, although it took 5 years, against all odds, he found Catalina. And "Alejandro".

I suppose we must be comforted that Leonora at least knows the truth. Yet, deprived of seeing that reunion, we cannot help but feel cheated.

Francisco? You cannot be disappointed when there are no expectations.

Now, the focus for me has shifted. Catalina does not deserve our speculation. All concern and affection might be best saved for those most affected by Catalina's cruelty and mercilessness. For Juan Carlos who has stayed by Leonora's side all these years, for Leonora's unquenchable grief, for Luis who persevered despite almost being morally wounded, for Ambar who was so valiant...

Catalina will come to an end. Eventually. It is how and if the survivors are able to recover and gain some semblance of their lives back.

I will be back later.

Thank you Urban. Thank you.

Diana

Diana, it is just that Catalina was a rat. I don’t know if someone called her a rat along the way or if it just came to my mind when I saw her hiding behind the buoy. She was a rat off of a sinking ship. : )

Thanks so much UA. I think you outdid yourself on this episode. So many screenshots and wonderful writing. And thank you for your epilogue.

Also thanks to Jarifa and AnonFri for your excellent recaps.

I cannot believe the show ended in this fashion. I am livid and vexed. And that 5 years later nonsense. So the wicked witch has been brainwashing her nieto for all that time. Great that Leonora now knows that her child is alive and some day the monster will be caught. But please...

I think Kirby summed it up when he stated this tn is a mess.

I'm with you Susanlynn. I hate this. When real life shows us monsters "winning" every day, I don't need a tn to do the same.

Yes Diana I too feel cheated with Leonora still apart from her child.

Jarifa - you summed up my feelings: "To say I am BUMMED is an understatement. The ending spoiled the entire series for me" I look forward to the discussion you and UA will have about the original. Perhaps it will help make sense of this craziness for me.

And here "I wanted to slap Leonora into reality when she didn’t shoot Catalina from the get go. Then later she hadn’t taken the safety off. She was just a blubbering mess." Yes and why at this point? Leonora knew what Catalina was capable of. She needed to shoot immediately.

Thank you all for letting me rant and your insightful comments. I look to forward to chatting more later.

All I can say is that one never, ever gets over losing a child. I know this to be true. So this was an especially cruel ending for Leonarda knowing that evil Catalina has had with her son for the last five years.

Karen, I agree with everything you wrote. Real life is cruel enough. I need telenovelas to help me escape from bleak reality...not plunge me deeper into an abyss of evil .When I first fell down this rabbit hole as a distraction about 12 years ago after my mother died, telenovelas were morality plays depicting the battle between good and evil. In the end, the good were rewarded and the evil were punished.

HOWever, I want to thank our recappers who are the real good guys here caraycaray who give their time, talent, and effort to bring us excellent, detailed recaps.

Hello,

How is it that it took five years to view surveillance footage from all possible sources? If no bodies were ever found, didn't it occur to them that Catalina planned a great escape? The suicide plot never made any sense, given Catalina's will to always get her way. I would never have believed that she killed herself and Edgar, without seeing the bodies first. The boat didn't even sink! Also, as the boat exploded, it seemed as if Catalina or someone else had jumped off. I agree with everyone else that the characters in this novella made it way too easy for Catalina to get away with everything. Leonora had one chance to shoot her, but didn't.

Whatever happened to the inheritance? Was Alejandro considered a rightful heir, and by default Edgar? Is Catalina going to come back with an 18 year old Edgar to claim the Larios fortune? How is she even surviving out there? I suppose she had offshore accounts.

This show was so maddening. But thank you Jarifa and Urban for everything. It was fun.

Thank you so much for the final recap, Urban! I didn’t overthink too much that this was a GG production at least not until the halfway point or so. The ending definitely left some unanswered questions though. 25 episodes was not enough. I actually kinda think LaUsp made better use of those 25 episodes. Idk....

I was wondering where the final scene took place lol I was thinking it’d be a place like Greenland /Iceland or Alaska or even Antarctica. I might’ve recognized NF had the waterfall not been frozen.

The characters that I wanted to survive, survived so I was satisfied with that. Ultimately I think it was his love for his son that helped Luis live. I was hanging on the edge of my seat when Catalina shot him.

I was a little surprised by the amount of time that passed for the time skip. I just got this image in my head of Leonora sitting on the beach everyday for five years and it seemed unrealistic. I wonder what her mental state was by the time JC went and told her that Edgar was alive. I’m pretty sure that Leonora says “I don’t ever wanna see you again.” to JC, NOT “I don’t want to forget you.” I’ll have to watch that scene again to make sure but I’m pretty sure that’s what I remember that the CCs showed. I always watch telenovelas with CCs lol

Catalina certainly showed an interesting state of mind when she started calling Edgar “Alejandro”. So I wonder what happened with the inheritance? Did Catalina take it? JC had to use it to bargain with her but did she actually get it?

Francisco got what he deserved and Ambar left (from visiting him) with her head held high.

Leonora should’ve killed Catalina when she had the chance. At least we got to see how Catalina escaped with Edgar.

I might watch Rubí but I’m not sure yet.

Thanks, UA, excellent recap pf a very disturbing and shocking finale.

Jarifa, DITTO on your entire first comment. I was so BUMMED that I could not even concentrate while watching El Dragon. And yes, I don't know how Leonora could have been made out to be such a blithering nitwit, yet she was able to find Catalina before anyone else. That did not make sense to me. The other thing that was completely annoying and frustrating was how everyone kept trying to reason with Catalina and pleading with her to return the baby. Did they seriously think that she would just hand the baby over just because they were begging her to? I-D-I-O-T-S!!

Francisco is not worth my time. I'll just say that I'm glad he is in prison without legs; I just hope they took ALL of them.

I like D.D.'s report that Catalina was caught, but I want to SEE it. This was definitely set up for a sequel, I just hope they come through and don't leave us hanging as they did with Doble Vida.

Many, many thanks to Jarifa, UA and AnonFri for all their time, effort and dedication in bringing us such superb recaps.

Thanks UA..I'm boycotting...er Mancotting based on the F I N.

TF and AnonFri, our comments crossed.

AnonFri, "The suicide plot never made any sense, given Catalina's will to always get her way" Exactly! And she kept mentioning her "plan," so I knew right away that she had gotten away with murder and the baby.

TF, "I just got this image in my head of Leonora sitting on the beach everyday for five years and it seemed unrealistic. I wonder what her mental state was by the time JC went and told her that Edgar was alive." I had the same image and was wondering the same thing. Did she spend all the 5 years roaming the beaches? They sure made it look like it! So how was she able to survive? Did JC pay for her dwellings and food?

All of Catalina's accounts were frozen by JC. She was able to get by with all those diamonds she took from the poor, slaughtered girl's body.

Oh RGV nitwit is good, thanks, I had called LeoNada everything else, but had not thought of that one. I have mentally added it.

Aww Kirby, mancotting based on the FIN is quite understandable :-)

Oh and TF , Leonora did tell JC "I never want to see you again."

Yes LeoNada definitely told Jose Carlos "I never want to see you again." but not really in a mean way, but more in a painful way.

But then again Susie's Bipolar AutoCorrect has more sense than LeoNada.

Wow, Urban, amazing recap! And all those screenshots!

I haven’t been able to participate in this patio, but I did read a few excellent recaps and wonderful comments, too many days later to join in the discussion. I didn’t really have a bead on whether you all liked this show or not.

I was riveted by the performance of Paulette Hernandez who played Leonora. Outstanding! I also really enjoyed Gonzalo Garcia Vivanco (Juan Carlos) and Nailea Norvind (Ambar) and Flavio Medina (Francisco Larios) and Osvaldo de Leon (Luis).

I do so wish Azela Robinson (Gelica) had been given the lead. I bet she wishes it too. She may not look like a model, but she can really bring sexiness and evil. And why did the director decide that Paz Vega (Catalina) should stare the whole time? I’m sure that was the director’s choice – no actress would choose just staring all the way through a series. Psychopaths are world-class manipulators, and they know how to charm. Why would all these men fall for somebody who is just an ice statue? There are lots of other beautiful women on the planet, much friendlier. Why this one? Anyway, it’s much scarier when somebody who seems nice and normal does horrific things.

I thought this was grim from start to finish. And the plot was reduced so much that it felt rushed and choppy. There was little time for character development. I understand that they want to make shorter telenovelas, but much is lost – time for us to get to know the characters, and also all the side-stories which sometimes are more fun than the main plot line.

I’d love to know how this version was different than the original.

I had heard "olvidar" but in the pain of the moment...

When I get home I will deal with the comparison article so I won't say anything

here. However, good point about offshore accounts, as most wealthy people probably do this to pay fewer taxes. It isn't ethical but it's also not illegal.

I am firmly of the opinion that 25 episodes is inadequate for a remake of something that is 3+ times that length. As for Rubi, I had read that they had planned a sequel but this looks like a 25 episode one because they said 5 weeks. That doesn't make sense to me.

Complete and excellent recap of a very unsatisfying final episode, Urban. You've outdone yourself! Geez, why didn't Ambar show Leonora how to USE the gun she gave her? If it had been months instead of years when Catalina and Edgar had been found, I think it would have been a better setup for a sequel, with Juan Carlos and Leonora chasing Catalina around the world.. As it is, I think this show's creators will just leave us dangling forever

Remember the finale of YNCELH? That had Ursula accidentally killing her no-good son who took the bullet meant for the leading lady. We last saw her crying over his dead body and she had a long rap sheet of her own. We never saw her get arrested or off herself. I was outraged at that one, so I was prepared for this one. She had earlier driven her daughter to suicide.

One line by Luis, JC, or Aguilar would have helped. As in "Interpol will be there any second."

Maybe a sequel with a super-intelligent and morally upright Canadian police detective, trilingual in English, French and Spanish, who is more than a match for Catalina, pursuing her through all the Canadian provinces. None of the main characters in this tn seems bright enough to catch her and most of the Mexican legal authorities are corruptible.

Urban--It was a tough finish you had to cope with, but a masterful job of having the screen shots follow the action so precisely. You are to be commended for your abilities on both fronts.

ITA with everyone's responses to this unsatifying ending. If this ending recalls YNCELH, Caer en Tentacion was a close parallel. It ended by the sea with Santiago having now lost the two loves of his life and no explanation for Raquel's decision to end it. As soon as I saw the shot of the person sitting on the rocks by the sea in Cuna, I knew that I wouldn't like the ending. It could have been made to end as she was found and the child recovered. Why does Giselle want to do this to us? We watched all Catalina's cruelties from the beginning anticipating her downfall. The only time we saw her smiling, happy, free and being loving was in the last minute, an UNDESERVED minute at that. Leonora's hell was NOT over just being told Edgar was alive.

I do feel that Leonora was right about a relationship with Jose Carlos, regardless of his promise to Alejandro. They could never have formed a happy family after what she'd been through. Merely looking at him would bring it all back every day. That's something impossible to overcome. Even if she recovers her son, it can't be in the cards.

All in all it was a good production, up until those last minutes. Seeing Francisco pay for his part of enabling Catalina through his weakness, the loss of his legs was ok, but meh--we were all waiting for Catalina's downfall, not her HEA.

I also agree that trying to cut this down from a lengthy telenovela to 25 episodes cheated the actors, the story and us. True, there are a lot of side stories that don't add a lot and could be cut out, but the number of episodes should be flexible in order to give us a chance to see more character development.

Thanks to Urban, Jarifa and AnonFri for all their work to bring us this tn. It will certainly go down in the annals of Caray Viewerville, for another ending to a story with major unresolved issues.

Looking forward to the side-by-side comparison of this and the original.

Stunned by the ending. But that doesn't take away from the wonderful work done by our recappers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And I'm just going to try and forget how this one turned out. UA, you outdid yourself on the grand finale and I give you credit, especially since you knew how it turned out.

UA: Yes! I loved YNCELH but hated the finale. It seems like GG likes to jam pack the finale but still leave certain things open ended. I actually wasn’t that miffed with CET’s ending, surprisingly enough.
I was discussing CET with someone on Twitter yesterday and this person said that they give credit to Leonardo Bechini who did the screenplay.

My favorite non GG production is still ECDLP.

I was okay with the 25 episodes but didn’t expect them to gut the main plot line.

I think that Leonarda and J. Carlos could have been a comfort to each other. Some couples are pulled apart by The loss of a child, but others are drawn closer together and are sometimes the only ones who understand how they feel.

We seem to be in unanimous agreement that we are disappointed. At a minimum. "Stunned" as well as you noted Judy.

Having seen CET, I expected the worst so was relieved that Leonora and "Alejandro" survived.

Yet, there is so much to mourn.

"...the wicked witch has been brainwashing her nieto for all that time" summed the unresolved tragic fallout up perfectly Karen. A cruel ending Susanlynn. Absolutely.

"Ultimately I think it was his love for his son that helped Luis live. I was hanging on the edge of my seat when Catalina shot him". I think we all were TF. At first, I assumed he was dead.

"The other thing that was completely annoying and frustrating was how everyone kept trying to reason with Catalina and pleading with her to return the baby. Did they seriously think that she would just hand the baby over just because they were begging her to? I-D-I-O-T-S!!. So true Rgv Chick, so true. Thank you for explaining how Catalina managed to get along financially.

Anita, your explaining why Leonora could/should not be with Jose Carlos was compelling. I was in a fantasy world but yes, every time she looked at him she would see pain and loss.

I think I might be alone on this, but I can't fault Leonora for not shooting Catalina. She was paralyzed with fear. Not only for herself but her child. I would suspect her instinct for survival kicked in and when it came down to it, she just could not shoot the grandmother of her child. A harrowing situation.

SpanProf, I believe there will not be anything further on this story. But much to mull over.

In addition to the amazing recaps, the comments have always been thoughtful and well stated. The patio was superb.

Diana

I do not see a sequel or a spin-off of this story.

I am profoundly disappointed that we won't get the satisfaction of seeing her get arrested and publicly humiliated. However, I agree that while I would have liked to have seen Leonora take Catalina out of mortal existence I think she had too much fear and too much conscience. Despite Catalina being a psychopath and a sociopath, Leonora coul not make herself kill her.

A good recap Urban. I did not opt to watch this one.
But I was really shocked to see her
Waiting for the little boy. Who thinks shes mom. I'm glad they caught her cuz
That kids life would have been a livin hell.Just like his father's.And granpa
Pa.
What a sicko I she was. So glad they caught her though.
Looks like every Body got the Anvils they had comin to them.
After all the bloodshed I'm surprised
She didn't get hers spilled. The girl
Is a psycho fer sher. That said. We move on. "Ringo"?

Thank you Urban.

Thank you Urban!. What a terrific final recap. The screenshots were fabulous and the writing stellar as always

I think the ending was even more ambiguous. The background was the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina

They may have located Catalina but not be able to get her

Mely

I would think that Argentina would want to extradite her. She doesn't have enough money to bribe everyone anymore and she has killed so many people.

Google says no treaty with US. Don’t know about Mexico
Offered with caveat that I only did cursory search
However Argentina has large German heritage population from end of WWII

I honestly think GG owes her viewers a little more closure
I love her novelas. The acting is first rate as is the writing. The plot is dense and hangs together. I don’t expect a wedding or happiness ever after, but this seemed slapped on

Once again thanks to your efforts recappers. I enjoy your work as much as the novela

Mely

As far as the inheritance is concerned:

Alejandro was the legally recognized son of Carlos Larios. So Edgar COULD claim the inheritance when he is of age, as the heir of the Alejandro Larios Estate. I doubt seriously Jose Carlos would contest the money going to Edgar.

However, there might not be much of an estate to inherit, since Gothier was involved in human trafficking, diamond smuggling, cooked books and other assorted crimes. At the end of the show, Gothier had been closed down. I'm sure Catalina/Carlos' assets were probably seized.

If Catalina has been raising Edgar as "Alejandro", how then would she get "Alejandro" to claim the estate when everyone knows Alejandro Larios died in a plane crash? Edgar's identity would have to be revealed, thus revealing the continued existence of Catalina.

So I don't think Catalina cares about the inheritance anymore because there might not be anything to inherit and the acceptance of the inheritance will lead to Catalina.

The fact that Luis was bringing forth evidence to Aguilar and Jose Carlos 5 years later means he didn't think Catalina & Edgar were dead and that he dedicated himself to finding them.

Anon207--Thanks for dropping by and adding your thoughts. All sound very plausible. Especially there not being much left to inherit, and having Edgar live as Alejandro. I'm wondering what she's living on. If she stashed money off shore, how does she access it in Argentina (I, too, thought it was a glacier and thought it was Patagonia.) She needs some kind of an account or credit cards.

I guees in the world of criminal finance anything is possible. OTOH, the word of the day (or for years) is Follow The Money. Maybe that's what Luis was doing. I think it was totally wrong of the writers not to let us in on how Luis found Edgar.
