SpanProf, I thought the star pitcher's name was Lobo Ramirez. As to the age issue, some young studs like older women. And Reme and Connie are well preserved.
When I saw the blonde leaving Max after spending the night, I immediately concluded that Reme was going to end up with Emiliano, the one she really loves. And that Ale, having seen the blonde leaving, would be more forgiving of her mother's having been with Emiliano.
Again, not thrilled with the whole Luis/Jimena/Aurora story line. And Jimena is, as she accused Marlene of being last night, insoportable.
I recently finished episode #103, which ends the third season, what a magnificent story!
and so on to the last season, the page has turned, it begins with Ibrahim narrating, he is somewhere between heaven and hell...
Here's a "Not a Recap" to get us started:
Geez, the divorce virus may not be deadly, but it sure does seem contagious. Connie's mother, Mónica, is talking to Ramiro, who is apparently fixing something that's not working in the sink. With some effort, he finds the part that's broken. He says he thinks he can fix it. He bemoans the fact that these days, when a part doesn't last, people just throw it out, whereas he would prefer to repair it. Mónica, on the other hand, believes in tossing things that no longer work. And sure enough, before long, we find that she wants to divorce her husband of forty years. She explains that things are neither good nor bad, they're just always the same. She doesn't want to live that way. She tells Connie that she, Connie, has set a good example for her, has opened her eyes.
Ale and her new best friend, Lucia, are running in the park. Along comes Lucia's boyfriend (Benjamin? or is that someone else?) He asks Lucia when she started hanging out with freaks. Lucia protests. I'm not sure who challenged whom, but the next thing we know, the boyfriend and Ale are racing each other. They seem pretty evenly matched, but then he puts forth extra effort to move ahead. Ale strains to keep up but soon slows down and collapses on the ground. Lucia is upset. She tries to revive Ale, even administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Ale regains consciousness but feels dizzy. Lucia asks whether she can call Ale's mother or father. Ale gives her her phone, I think, and asks her to call her father. Emiliano arrives, examines her quickly, helps her to her feet, and the two of them leave.
At Emiliano's office, he examines Ale more carefully. He removes the cloth covering that she has wrapped tightly around her chest, presumably to flatten her breasts. He sees that her back is covered in red irritation from the tight covering. He tells her that she's doing harm to herself by using it. It cuts off her circulation and caused her to collapse. She asks him not to tell her mother, and when he hesitates, she tells him that she's an adult, and legally he's not permitted to discuss any of his patients without their consent. He agrees that this will remain just between the two of them.
I have no idea what's really going on with Lobo Ramirez. I'm not sure why he suddenly appears in Houston. Moreover, seemingly on the spur of the moment he hires Remedios to be his personal assistant and wants to hire Connie as his lawyer to help him deal with his ex-wife's demands. Connie claims she can't, in part because of the video that has already been circulating of the three of them cavorting in Miami. But Connie and Remedios are both quite taken with him--and perhaps by him. [I keep thinking of a Spanish phrase that I learned on some other telenovela: aquí hay gato encerrado (there's something fishy here).]
Of course, we see more of Luis and his two women. Having learned that Aurora has succeeded in getting her son Nico enrolled in the same school as Jimena's daughter Susy, Luis tries to convince Jimena that they should move Susy to a different school, that this one is increasingly full of riff-raff. Jimena tells him he's nuts. She also tells him that she and Aurora have decided that tomorrow they should meet each other's spouse. Oops.
At the end of the episode, Plutarco leaves the bar with Gloria. Blech.
Thanks so much for the “Not Recap”. Pretty thorough, if you ask me!
Some things about this novela I enjoy and others are just meh. Connie’s mother suddenly deciding to divorce Pedro is one of the latter. I wondered if they were going with Mónica developing an interest in Ramiro. They also mentioned having known each other for a long time, which seemed odd. I guess Connie and Reme are so close that their extended families become friendly. Pedro does sort of seem like a stuffed shirt, but not that bad of a guy.
I was delighted to see Lucía break up with Benjamin. He’s a stereotypical jock bro with no sensitivity toward other people. Somehow I doubt they’ll go with a relationship between Ale and Lucía. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a straight person suddenly in a same sex relationship, at least not in a TN.
Hmmm. I wasn’t really thinking transgender for Ale, but I suppose that makes sense. I hope he convinced her to stop binding her breasts.
I didn’t find Lobo Ramirez especially suspicious. IIRC they had a TV announcement about his having been traded from Miami (not the Marlins, some made up team name) to Houston (again not the Astros, just a fictitious team). Don’t know why they didn’t use the real team names. People in telenovelas behave oddly. He liked Connie and Reme a lot, and they had a wild night together in Miami that I suspect was actually pretty tame.
Remedios is pretty forthright as a character. When he mentioned his PA having quit (presumably rather than move to another city), she spoke right up. And, to me, it would be quite typical of an athlete to just hire a person standing in front of them rather than ask for credentials, do background checks, etc. He mentioned difficulties with his ex, again a conversation quite typical for TN characters, and she mentioned Connie.
Juanita, I think the woman Plutarco left the bar with was Lorena, his erstwhile divorce client. Unless there are several brunettes fond of exposing most of their mammaries while out for a drink with a friend. She broke it off with Emiliano when he said Reme’s name in the middle of foreplay. And you know this is going to be revealed to Connie.
Luis, gah! Fed up with him getting away with this. He’s willing to take his daughter out of a school where she’s doing well and likely has a circle of friends to keep his double life secret.
Thanks very much, novelera, for your perceptive remarks. I too thought the bit about Mónica suddenly wanting to divorce her husband of 40 years was a bit much, though I did enjoy the way the writers led into it via the metaphor of tools or parts that no longer work.
You make a good case for Lobo's sudden appearance in Houston and his sudden hiring of Remedios and his wish to hire Connie. But somehow, my mierda detector kept sounding an alarm. I refuse to try to choose between you and my mierda detector :-), so I'll just wait to see what the next episode or so brings.
Yes, I do think Plutarco has more than one, um, well-endowed former divorce client, and I'm pretty sure the dark-haired woman Plutarco left with in last night's episode is named Gloria. She made a play for Plutarco in an earlier episode, and she's apparently still after him.
Interesting question, SpanProf, about Luis possibly losing his job. I suspect that since Jimena is a lawyer (hard as that is to believe) in an apparently successful law firm, her income alone could probably carry the family for a while. Jimena is so invested in her presenting her family to the world as perfect that she might be willing to do that while Luis looks for another job (hah!). Then again, she might instead catch the divorce virus. I could also imagine a scene where Jimena and Aurora commiserate with each other since both their husbands have suddenly lost their jobs. What a coincidence!
I liked the talk that Emiliano gave to Ale, bringing in his own experience. He seems to have gotten through to her. Just where this is going as far as Ale is concerned isn't yet wholly clear, at least not to me.
Did anyone else find Lucia's transformation from traitorous perra to Ale's BFF a bit too rapid? One minute she's all invested in being BMOC Benjamin's novia and the next minute she's breaking off with him and calling him a bully and a patán. Oh well, I guess moods and opinions can change with the same speed as telenovela medicine and telenovela airlines.
