I will attempt a recap tonight. Unless they drag this out, I am expecting a very emotional episode tonight with the court’s decision. I hope I can do it justice ;)
Recap might not be up until late morning tomorrow, ET.
dondi356
Would you rather live with him or her? I’m listening, the judge says. That’s all he needs to know. Oyku looks downcast. She’s silent. Doesn’t answer quickly. Finally, she gives a sigh and says softly, “with her”.
Both parties are waiting outside the courtroom. There are awkward glances between Demir, Candan and Asu. Demir asks his lawyer, this ends today, right? Yes, responds the lawyer. We are just waiting for the judge to speak with Oyku. Our guys are feeling hopeful. Asu looks worried. They are called back into the courtroom for the verdict.
Oyku is sitting quietly in the courtroom, looking despondent. Demir and Asu take their places. Ugur sits beside Oyku. I notice that Candan is sitting over on Asu’s side of the room.
The judge speaks, a decision has been reached. We reach this decision according to Oyku’s wishes with she being of sound mind and free will to choose. Her choice shall not be questioned. It shall be respected and accepted. It is determined that custody of Oyku Gokturk in accordance with her wishes, shall be granted by the power of the state….to her mother, Asu Karaman. I can’t tell who is more shocked, Demir or Asu (anyone in Viewerville?). We see puzzled reactions from Candan and Ugur. I think Oyku is looking for Demir’s reaction.
Demir asks, what did you say? My daughter chose to live with her? The judge asks for silence. He continues, the father may visit on the days approved by the court. This will be respected or he will lose the right to see her. Demir is staring at Oyku; she turns away from his stare. Asu smiles at Oyku, trying to hold back any strong emotions.
Demir calls out. No, no, no, Your Honor, there must have been a mistake. There’s no way my daughter would make that choice. The judge asks for silence. Demir raises his voice. How can I be quiet, Your Honor! I can’t believe this. My daughter couldn’t have said this! The judge orders to have Demir taken outside. Demir goes over to Oyku and bends down. He pleads with her to tell the judge this was just a misunderstanding. Say something. Oyku doesn’t say a word and looks over at Asu. Demir is still pleading with Oyku when the guards tear him away and forcibly remove him from the courtroom. He shouts, Hija! Hija! Oyku looks affected. Asu has that smug smirk on her face.
Demir continues his meltdown in the hallway. He has to be restrained. Ugur goes to him and tries to calm him. He yells to Ugur, don’t leave her alone! He yells to the guards, let me go! He manages to break free and he runs back in the direction of the courtroom. More guards appear to restrain him. Demir is screaming and one of the guards places a hand over his mouth. Oyku and Asu enter the hallway, Oyku stares at Demir and he quiets down. Asu tells Oyku, it looks like you father has lost control, but he will be ok. Oyku nods and Asu gives her a hug. (Notice Candan standing behind Asu and Oyku.) Demir repeats his daughter’s name over and over as he is lead out of the courthouse.
Asu and Oyku arrive at the apartment. Welcome to my…I mean…our house, she says to Oyku. We will be together from now on (let’s see how long it lasts). Oyku says nothing. Asu says she is sorry about today and she will pick up her things from Demir tomorrow. Oyku remains silent and nods.
dondi356
Asu realizes how Oyku feels about her father but says she made the correct decision. She says I’m your mother. A child belongs with her mother. You won’t regret it. Everything will be fine. Oyku nods again. She asks Oyku what she wants for dinner. How about macaroni? Don’t you like macaroni? Oyku manages a weak smile and says, I do. (She better like it because that’s the only thing Asu cooks for her)
Demir and Ugur arrive home. First thing he notices are the signs on the wall that Oyku drew: “welcome to our home” and “Oyku - Demir”. He goes directly into Oyku’s room and angrily starts stuffing a bag with Oyku’s belongings. Ugur asks him to calm down. Demir exclaims, she chose her mother! Now she is hers! The father of the year trophy falls to the floor and breaks. He stuffs The Little Prince in the bag, too. Ugur tries his best to calm Demir. Maybe he needs professional help. No, he’s fine; he sees things clearly now. Demir starts tearing pictures from the walls. He throws the bag and tells Ugur, here, take this to her. Demir goes to leave. Ugur asks where is he going? Demir replies, to hell…and don’t follow me. But before he leaves, he reminds Ugur to get Oyku’s meds out of the drawer and take them, too.
Oh, Asu forgot to call Cemal with the good news. She texts him and Cemal smiles as he reads, I don’t know how it happened but Oyku told the judge she wanted to be with me.
Cemal is meeting with Jilet. Jilet opens his safe and shows Cemal a couple of jewels. He says, with these jewels we will get rid of Demir and Ugur forever. He goes on to explain the jewels are priceless but it’s not because of their worth. It’s because they will steal them from someone very important. Jilet puts them back in the safe. He says they were stolen from the Iranian embassy last week. It is an international scandal. Everyone is looking for them. If Demir and Ugur are caught, they are finished. Cemal says, let’s celebrate!
Asu serves Oyku the pasta dinner. There is a knock at the door. Asu goes to open. It’s Ugur. What are you doing here? He brought Oyku’s things. Oyku hears it’s Ugur and she runs to hug him. What’s the rush, asks Asu? The girls will need her school supplies, etc. He asks Asu if he can have a few minutes alone with Oyku. She generously gives him two minutes. He sits with Oyku on the stairs outside the apartment to talk.
Oyku wants to know how Demir is and if he is mad. Ugur avoids the truth and says, no, dads don’t get mad at their daughters. Ugur has just one question, why did she say that in court? Oyku doesn’t answer; she looks down. Ugur tries to coax an answer from her but no dice. He asks if Asu or Cemal did something or threatened her. She shakes her head no. Then why did you choose Asu?
Oyky is saved by Asu’s call, dinner’s getting cold! Oyku thanks Ugur for bringing her stuff. Is my backpack in there? Yes, Demir put everything you need. She unzips the bag and gives Ugur her house keys (was that necessary?). She asks Ugur to visit Demir every so often. Take care of him and make sure he’s ok. Of course, says Ugur. They say goodbye. Oyku waves and closes the door.
Oyku returns to her dinner. Asu asks what did they talk about? Nothing. Well you were gone a long time to be talking about nothing. Oyku is saved from further interrogation by Cemal calling. Asu takes the call in the bedroom and closes the door.
dondi356
Are you happy, Asu? Yes, she still can’t believe it. Cemal, she chose me! I told you so, says Cemal. Asu doesn’t even know how this happened. And if anyone thought there was a chance that Asu truly wants to be a good mother, she says in the next breath, I’m rich now, right? Who’s got a lot of money? Cemal advises her to slow down. Why should she? She has custody! She can claim the inheritance. Cemal reminds her they need to see the lawyer tomorrow. Cemal will meet Asu after she drops Oyku off at school. Asu thanks Cemal because she couldn’t have done this without him. She would have given up. (I want to push her out the bedroom window.)
Demir is at a bar. He’s had way too much to drink, but it’s not enough for him yet. He goes up to the bar. Fill it up. He tries to start a conversation with the Ercan the bartender. Do you have kids? Yes, Ercan has a daughter. Demir offers his condolences. He rambles on about how ungrateful children can be. He guesses you get the children you deserve. Demir tells Ercan what he learned today--people use your weaknesses to hurt you. Ercan humors Demir and he suggests that Demir slow down his drinking (I think he should cut him off).
Demir decides he has something to say to everyone in the bar. He gets up on a chair and starts shouting to get everyone’s attention. He proclaims, from now on I will live my life, damn it! Demir gets bounced out onto the street. He tries to get back in and gets tossed again.
Ugur goes home. Mufide welcomes him in.
Asu is sitting beside a sleeping oyku. She says out loud she doesn’t know why Oyku chose her. Oyku opens her eyes once Asu leaves the room.
Candan is opening the clinic. Cemal shows up. She stops him and asks for Asu’s phone number so she can keep in touch with Oyku. Cemal asks if she is ok; they haven’t had a chance to talk. She’s fine and there nothing to talk about. He wants her to understand that he is not who she thinks he is. He wants to explain everything. She’s not ready to hear it after all that has happened. He lets it go.
Ugur is going to visit Demir. Mufide says to bring him over and Ugur thinks it’s a good idea. He might get depressed all by himself.
Oyku wakes up and realizes she’s late for school. The mad rush is on. Wake up, Asu! Oyku’s clothes are wrinkled because of how Demir stuffed them in the bag. She can’t wear her shirt like that and asks Asu for the iron. Asu thinks it is no big deal; just wear it like that for today. Oyku says no, teacher will get mad. Asu takes the shirt and has to search for the iron. They find it under the bed and Asu starts to iron. Oyku reminds Asu about breakfast. Candan calls and wants to speak with Oyku.
Candan asks if everything is ok? Do you have my new number, she asks? Call me if you need anything or just want to talk. See you soon, take care.
Asu is annoyed. Do you think I’m your secretary, Miss Oyku? What are you paying me? (what, the inheritance is not enough?) Asu does a lousy job of ironing.
Ugur is on his way to Demir’s. He hears loud music blasting from the house. He rings the bell and bangs on the door and the window. He yells for Demir. Then he remembers he has the house key. He enters the house to see Demir jumping on the couch. Maybe he’s still drunk? He pulls Ugur up on the couch. Ugur jumps down and shuts the music. What’s going on? Are you alright?
Demir is seemingly in the grip of mania but he thinks he’s doing fine. Demir remembers he has tea brewing in the kitchen. Ugur notices a bandage on Demir’s head. Was it a fight? No, just a small incident. Demir says, guess what I didn’t do today? Demir answers his own question, I didn’t have breakfast! I hate breakfast and I’ll never make it again. I’ll only have tea. Ugur is concerned for Demir’s wellbeing. Is it that he bumped his head?
dondi356
Demir rambles on. Look around. I don’t need to worry if she is hungry, if she has done homework, picked up her clothes, bathed, combed her hair or what time I have to pick her up! What did she do today? Did something happen’? Is she hurt? Who cares! There’s no need to stress out anymore. It’s wonderful. For example, I went out last night and stayed out until morning. Ugur tries to be understanding. Demir says yes, this is the life! Now Oyku is Asu’s problem. He smiles and drinks his tea.
Demir wants to call the girls. Ugur will take a pass. Is it the teacher, Demir asks? Ugur says that relationship isn’t going well right now. Demir says not to worry, he will fix things with Sevgi. No way, stay out of it, says Ugur. Demir asks why do you want a girlfriend anyway? Then you get married and have kids. That’s torture. Demir calls Ozge. How’s it going? Meanwhile, Ugur gets a call from Sunger. He has a job; come with Demir. Demir is up for it. We’ll have girls, work and money! Let’s go!
Cemal and Asu are at the lawyer. Cemal says Asu now has custody and it will take a lot of money to care for the child. The lawyer is listening. He’s explained this before; Sezer’s wishes must be completed first. Yes, they know and that is what Asu is doing; she has custody. But caring for the child is expensive. The lawyer understands and here’s what he can do. He proposes a monthly amount to be transferred to Asu to care for the child. Cemal and Asu are pleased at the prospect.
The lawyer will need Asu to sign some paperwork so he can take care of it. Asu is ready to sign on the dotted line but Cemal is cautious. Why does Asu need to sign? The lawyer says he needs Asu’s written permission to proceed. Asu is willing to sign anything to get that money asap. Cemal seems concerned.
It’s lunchtime at school and Oyku is eating with Mercan. He’s finished and he will meet her outside when she’s done. Oyku takes out her pill bottle. She only has one pill left and decides to save it for tomorrow.
And we are out.
dondi356
Dondi, what a painfully sad episode you had to recap, but you did it masterfully and caught all the emotion, thank you! I have to admit that some scenes were still so upsetting that I skipped portions of what you wrote.
We had thought that Oyku might make the choice she did but it was still shocking and so upsetting. And watching Demir spiral downward was also quite painful. I'm almost afraid to watch tonight. I can't stand to see the smugness and smirks on Asu and Cemal while Demir is trying so hard to hide his pain.
I am crossing all my fingers that those papers Asu has to sign will put a halt or at least a damper on her plans.
I am wondering how long it will take Oyku to tell Asu about her illness and the need for meds. Will she even tell her? I am thinking that Asu will not be getting a monthly check that will suit her selfish needs. Will she be able to afford the meds?
Here's hoping that Oyku returns with Demire sooner than later.
Thanks, Rgv Chick for your kind words and great comments.
That was a gut-wrenching episode for sure. I think recapping helped me get through it. I had to keep my mind on getting the info down and didn’t have much time dwell on the emotion. Afterwards, it all kicked in even though I know this is fiction. Buğra Gulsoy did a terrific job of conveying Demir’s pain. I continue to be amazed by little Beren’s acting, too.
Add me to the list of people who are dying to know why Oyku made her choice!
Cemal’s caution at the lawyer’s office put up a red flag for me. One would think there should be paperwork for Asu to sign but he seemed very concerned by that. What lengths will the lawyer go to carry out Sezer’s last request? Will there be something in the fine print?
I am worried what will happen once Asu finds out about Oyku’s illness. She can barely get the kid to school each morning. The money will not be enough. I’m sure Demir would gladly welcome Oyku back but what if he gets busted in the latest Cemal-Jilet revenge plot? Is the orphanage in Oyku’s future? I don't want to think about it!
I fear we still have a lot of bad stuff to get through. We better get a happy ending or else!
dondi356
Many thanks, dondi356, for taking on this horrific episode and doing such a marvellous job of recapping. I suspect I'd have thrown my hands up in despair and quit soon after Oyku announced her decision. I keep trying to think how the writers will make that decision seem even semi-believable. So far, I haven't succeeded. My chief theories:
1) Oyku feels sorry for Asu and feels she needs Oyku more than Demir does.
2) Oyku somehow knows that Asu will receive lots of money from Sezer's will and decides that Asu but not Demir will be able to pay for the expensive medicines she needs.
No, I don't think either of these notions makes much sense. For one thing, Oyku has always seemed to like and care about Demir much more than she does Asu. Also, I don't think Oyku knows about Sezer's will, though even if she does, I would think her love for Demir would have been strong enough for her to stay with him and help him find ways to get the money needed for the medicines. So, like you and Rgv Chick and probably most of Viewerville, I'm totally mystified.
Speaking of the will and Oyku's illness, I doubt that Asu will have the temperament or love to deal with a seriously ill child. Indeed, I wonder whether Asu might even welcome Oyku's death, since that could leave her to inherit everything that had been left to Oyku. Cemal would very likely encourage her to focus on the positive benefits of Oyku's death.
Anyway, I think you did a stupendous job with this exceedingly frustrating episode. You captured everyting splendidly. I loved your asides, and I also enjoyed the way you presented the judge's decision as the long, drawn-out pronouncement that it was.
I've been assuming that I'll recap tonight's episode, and I guess I'll give it a try. But I'm not looking forward to it. :-(
Thank you, Juanita, for your very kind words. The writers are not taking it easy on us.
Oyku’s decision is a major headscratcher. I hope we get a flashback to explain it. The only thing I could think of is Oyku was threatened with harm to Demir and/or Candan. I wouldn’t put this past Cemal.
I have faith that you will deliver another stellar recap for us, even if the episode is not.
dondi356
Extremely late to the party. Dondi, you captured the pathos perfectly. It is mystifying why Oyku chose Asu. One thing to remember about the medications is that Oyku thinks they are curing her. Dr. Ihsan and Demir lied to her. She may think she could skip some, not realizing that they are only keeping her symptoms under control.
I'm a bit confused about how Cemal plans to get Demir arrested. I don't think Demir would have anything to do with Jilet. And wasn't the guy who called them Sunger, the Robin Hoodish guy who only arranges crimes against criminals.
I was glad to see that Candan isn't ready to have anything to do with Cemal.
My fingers and toes are crossed for some codicil or something that Asu is unaware of that will cramp her style. It WAS pretty disgusting how eager she was to get her hands on the money and the awful scene with the lawyer where they're talking about how expensive kids are. I doubt Oyku will get very much of that money spent on her. Of course, if the money allows Asu to buy as much alcohol as she wants, her caring for the child could be short lived.
Ugur and Demir are heading for their meeting with Sunger. Ugur tells him we don't have to do this if you don't want to. Demir replies that of course we have to do it. I need some action. Ugur asks, since when does a thief need action? They continue walking, but suddenly Ugur stops. Wait, wait. He stares at a poster: "Ahmet Yucelzale Erturk, autograph signing." It's tomorrow at 4 PM. He remembers Sevgi saying that this is her favorite poet, and Ugur telling her that he loves the guy's poems. Ugur snaps out of his trip down memory lane and tells Demir "This guy is my Sevgi's favorite." He takes a photo of the poster.
Demir and Ugur arrive at their meeting with Sunger. He tells them that the owner is out of town, and it's not clear when he'll be back. It's therefore important to do the work ASAP. Take the stone tonight and leave quickly. He adds that the guy they're stealing from has no morals. He has done some terrible things. Sunger then asks them whether they have any questions, and do they need an advance. To Ugur's apparent dismay, Demir says they don't need an advance, they'll collect afterward. Oh, there's one more thing, says Sunger. You'll be using a rental car, so be careful with it. Don't worry, it's clean.Come by tomorrow to pick it up. [I'm always wary when suddenly there's "one more thing." I'm somewhat suspicious that Sunger is in cahoots with Cemal and Jilet.]
Asu has come to pick Oyku up from school. Ilayda's mother is waiting nearby and is looking at Asu. She introduces herself as Ayla, Ilayda's mother. When Asu seems puzzled, Ayla explains that Ilayda is a friend of Oyku [uh...right]. Asu explains that she's Asu, Oyku's mother. The girls come down the stairs [separately, needless to say] and go off with their mothers. As soon as they're out of earshot, Ayla comments to her daugher that Asu looks like a bum or a hippie.
Asu seems to be getting her act together. She has bought a bracelet for Oyku. Oyku is pleased and says it's beautiful. Asu also says that there will be some changes. No more issues about breakfast. And tomorrow they will have dinner at home. After mentioning these improvements, Asu again asks Oyku why she chose her. Oyku is silent. Asu finally gives up, saying "I just want to know what's going on in your crazy head."
Demir and Ugur are at Demir's house. Demir tells Ugur that his relationship with Sevgi has changed him too much. There's a knock at the door. Two women have come. Demir greets one of them warmly. Ugur is clearly not interested. The two women sit on the couch with Demir in the middle, while Ugur sits apart on a chair. One of the women asks Demir where his daughter is. Demir tells her she doesn't live here any more, she lives with her mother.
Asu is preparing dinner. Oyku asks what she can do, and Asu tells her she can bring the plates to the table. Oyku picks them up and carries them into the other room, but suddenly she stops. She apparently has an attack and drops the plates, breaking one. Asu comes from the kitchen and asks Oyku whether she's OK. Yes, Oyku assures her. She tells Oyku not to worry, they're just plates. Asu goes back into the kitchen and Oyku picks up the pieces from the floor.
Demir and the two women are playing cards. He loses, and one of them assures him that perhaps he'll be lucky in love. Ugur, not at all interested, leaves to go see his mother.
Asu comes into the room with some kind of white cream all over her face. Oyku laughs. Asu explains that it's good for her face. She then puts moisturizer on Oyku's hands to make them smoother. She tells Oyku that she needs something for her face, too. A moisturizer. Oyku, amused, asks whether there's a different moisturizer for different parts of the body. Yes.
Asu then offers to do Oyku's hair. She'll put something on it overnight and it will be curly in the morning. Oyku agrees to have this done. Asu then asks again, When will you call me mamá? Oyku tells her (or reminds her) that she has to do something first. She has to stop drinking. Asu replies that a drink every now and then isn't bad. She then asks, anything else? Learn to cook. And don't lie to me. Promise me you won't lie. Oyku holds up a finger to seal the promise, but Asu seems not to know what to do. Asu again asks why Oyku chose her over Demir. This time, Oyku starts to respond: "Because...." but that's followed by several minutes of commercials. When they're over, Oyku simply says, "I'll tell you later."
In the morning, Oyku is telling Asu to hurry, we'll be late. Oyku tries to zip up her jacket but can't get the zipper to work. Asu comes over to help her, but she manages instead to break off the zipper. Oyku is upset, but Asu tells her to hold the jacket closed with her hands, and they'll get it fixed later.
Demir is sound asleep. Ugur comes by and knocks persistently at the door, to no avail. He then looks through a window and sees Demir asleep (and even hears him snoring). He bangs on the window. Demir doesn't stir. Finally, Ugur remembers that he still has the house key Oyku gave him to return to Demir. Ugur opens the door. Demir is having a dream and is mumbling aloud, "I have a queen. Stop cheating!" Ugur yells at him to wake up. When that doesn't work, he takes a bottle of water and pours some of it on Demir's face. Demir is not pleased. Ugur tells Demir that he'd been trying to wake him for half an hour. They have to study the document Sunger gave them.
Asu and Oyku are on the bus on the way to school. Suddenly Oyku remembers that she forgot her notebook. At first, Asu doesn't think it 's very important, but Oyku informs her that her teacher will be very annoyed if she doesn't have it. Asu tells her she'll go get it and bring it to Oyku. Oyku is very relieved. She needs it for math, which is in the last period. As she's leaving, she tells Asu not to forget her notebook. Don't worry, says Asu [Hah!]
As soon as Oyku has gone into the school, Asu meets Cemal, who has driven up to get her. They go to the lawyer's office and knock at the door. There's no answer. A man comes by asking whether they're looking for someone. Cemal tells him they're looking for the lawyer, they have an appointment with him. What lawyer, asks the man. There's no one there. The guy packed up all his things and left. He's not a lawyer, he's a con man (estafador). Cemal breaks into the office and finds it just about totally empty. "Where's my money?" demands Asu. She angrily yells at Cemal, "You turned me into a child's toy! And for what? You stole my money!" Cemal points out to her that he didn't force her to sign those papers. He shoves Asu and she falls to the floor. She gets up, telling Cemal "Leave me alone, you bastard!" She leaves, sobbing.
At school, Oyku explains to Sevgi that she left her notebook at home, but her mother will bring it. No problem, says Sevgi, I'll check your work when your mother brings the notebook. Of course, Ilayda never misses an opportunity to be nasty. She claims that Oyku didn't do her homework and that's why she didn't bring the notebook. The bell finally rings, signalling the end of class. Asu hasn't come. Sevgi tells Oyku she'll check it tomorrow. And Ilayda reminds Oyku that her mother didn't come, and her hair doesn't look so good, either.
Ugur is going to the event with Sevgi's favorite poet, and he doesn't want Demir to come with him. Demir enters anyway but keeps away from Ugur. Ugur gets on the line of people. He then sees Sevgi arrive and calls out to her, Sevgi, Sevgi, Sevgi. Sevgi joins him on line, but she doesn't look at all pleased. She asks him, "How's your fiancée?" Ugur tries to explain again that the woman is not his fiancée, he barely knows her. Sevgi points out that it's his turn on line to see the poet. Ugur stands in front of the poet, smiling. Finally, the poet says, "Give me your book." "What book? I didn't bring a book." Ugur claims that he knows the poet's work by heart, so he didn't need a book. "Do you want me to sign your chest?" the poet asks. Sevgi hands her copy to the poet and asks whether he would sign for both of them. Ugur is astonished and delighted.
Meanwhile, Demir has found a copy of The Little Prince. He opens it, and it brings back memories of Oyku asking him to read The Little Prince and perhaps she'll then fall asleep. Demir leaves. He's overwhelmed with more memories of events with Oyku. He sees kids feeding a dog and remembers when Oyku wanted to keep the dog she found. Demir finally has to sit down. "No, don't think. Don't think" he says to himself.
Asu is drunk (surprise, surprise). She walks out of the bar somewhat unsteadily and knocks into two guys. She becomes aggressively angry. "What's the matter? Don't you know how to walk?" One of the guys replies, "You're the one who wasn't looking." His buddy tells him that she's drunk, and the best thing is to leave her alone. They walk away as she curses them.
Oyku, meanwhile, waits for Asu outside the school. Asu finally appears. "Asu, are you OK? You're late. I thought you'd stop drinking," says Oyku. "I drank," Asu replies somewhat defiantly. "I don't care whether you call me mamá, amiga, Asu, or whatever."
Ugur and Sevgi leave the autograph signing. "Who's going to keep the book?" asks Ugur. Sevgi says she will, since it's her book. Ugur points out that it was signed for both of them, and he proposes one week for Sevgi, and then one week for him. He then asks her to come tomorrow and he'll introduce her to his mother. That will clear up any doubts. Sevgi is rather taken aback. "I don't know, it's all so sudden," she says, followed by "OK." A thrilled Ugur tells her he'll pick her up after class. Oh, and one more thing, he says. He bends over and kisses her cheek.
They go their separate ways, and Ugur suddenly wonders where Demir is. He calls him. Demir is not far. They can meet and go get the rental car. Demir reaches into his jacket pocket and finds a tiny star on a stick. I assume that's something of Oyku's, but I don't remember anything specific. Was it from the play?
At Asu's, a still somewhat drunk Asu tells Oyku that she wants to sleep for a while. Oyku asks whether she wants anything. Asu tells her, just don't make noise. A short time later, Oyku comes into Asu's bedroom. Asu is still awake. "Why are you mistreating me?" Oyku asks. Asu just wants to sleep. Oyku persists, "One day you treat me well, and the next day you mistreat me. You don't do what you say you will." Asu repeats the question she has continually been asking: "Why do you want to stay with someone you won't call mamá? Answer me." Asu and all of Viewerville will have to wait for Oyku's response.
Well we don't have to worry about Asu misspending the money! Ha! ha! The joke (errr scam) is on her...and Cemal. While I was so relieved that Asu got NADA, I worry about how Oyku will get her meds. And poor Oyku, she is completely confused with Asu's mood changes. I actually enjoyed watching them run off together after Asu picked her up from school, but I knew those promises Asu made to Oyku would be quickly broken.
I had a hard time reading Cemal's reaction to the lawyer bailing out. He didn't seem as upset as I would expect. Could Asu be right and Cemal was in on it??? And what about her father? Was this all a set up that her father planned...he was the one who gave her the card to that lawyer. Is there actually an inheritance to be claimed? Ay! Caray! So many questions!!!
Seems like Demir is finally allowing himself to miss Oyku.
Novelera, I had forgotten that Oyku thinks she is getting better, a deception which could be fatal for her. I am also remembering how the doctor told Demir that Oyku needed to remain stress free. With all that is happened, I'm surprised Oyku hasn't had any more episodes.
You delivered, Juanita! Wonderful recap. Great detail and loved your little interjections. I see you resisted FF’ing Ugur and Sevgi.
“ [I'm always wary when suddenly there's "one more thing." I'm somewhat suspicious that Sunger is in cahoots with Cemal and Jilet.]” I’m right there with you but I’m not 100% sure if Sunger knows this is a set up or if he’s just being used by Cemal and Jilet.
Did not see this coming! Sezer’s lawyer is a crook? It doesn’t quite make sense to me either, Rgv Chick. Was this planned with Sezer? Or was the lawyer planning on stealing the money for himself once Sezer died? Anyway, I let out a cheer and laughed when Cemal and Asu were scammed but then I quickly remembered this was Oyku’s rightful inheritance. This kid can’t catch a break.
Look for Asu to dump Oyku as fast as she can. Just waiting for her to find out Oyku is sick. I don’t think Oyku will ever work her magic on Asu like she did with Demir. Goodbye Asu.
How much longer will it be before we find out why Oyku chose Asu?
dondi356
Wow! Thanks so much, Rgv Chick and dondi356, for your perceptive and fascinating comments.
Rgv Chick, I confess it hadn't occurred to me that Asu might be right and that Cemal was in on the scam. But you're right, he did seem a lot less upset than I expected. As for the involvement of Asu's father...I don't think so, but I can see that it's possible. And perhaps there really isn't an inheritance to be claimed? Yikes!
As for Sunger, I like your idea, dondi356, that perhaps Sunger is being used by Cemal and Jilet. It's still hard to be sure, though I have a strong feeling that one way or another, this job that Sunger has given Ugur and Demir isn't going to work out well.
And you're right, I didn't FF>> through the scene with Ugur and Sevgi. I broke out laughing when Ugur and the poet came face to face, so I decided the scene was too good to leave out. (So all in all, this was a terrific episode: it made me cheer (when Cemal and Asu get scammed) and it made me laugh (Ugur at the autograph signing). )
And you've identified the Question of the Month: "How much longer will it be before we find out why Oyku chose Asu?"
Fabulous recap, Juanita. Loved your vivid descriptions and asides that echo Viewerville's reactions.
The lawyer scam was a stunning development. I hadn't thought that Cemal could have been involved in the disappearing inheritance, but I suppose that's possible. Somehow I hold out some hope that this might have been Sezer's plan to make sure Asu didn't run through the money.
I thought it likely that Oyku skipping that pill because there was only one left might have caused her symptom of her hands not working properly.
I was almost expecting Asu to get beat up by those two guys she collided with. But then again they looked too prosperous to be the kind of people that might do that.
I'm pretty disappointed with Demir. He told Ugur to include Oyku's medication, but they show her with only one. I hope he realizes that she needs more and that he'll have to tell Asu about Oyku's medical condition.
Thanks very much, novelera, for your thoughtful and perceptive comments. I too was disappointed with Demir, not just about his apparently losing track of how many pills were left but also his completely losing control and running wild. Then again, I ask myself how I would respond after such an unexpected and devastating blow, and I become a little more sympathetic.
And I agree with you that Oyku's suddenly having an attack could well have been because she didn't take that last pill. Or it could have been brought on by the stress of the court case and/or the stress of finding that Asu not only forgot about bringing her notebook but also arrived somewhat drunk.
I wonder how much longer Oyku will remain living with Asu. Money seemed to be Asu's primary motivation for wanting Oyku, and although I think Asu has become more fond of her and in some ways pleased to be a mother, I doubt that that will be enough to make her want to continue in that role if the money isn't there. Then again, it's not clear that Demir will be available. I don't have a good feeling about how his "job" with Ugur will turn out tonight. They both could wind up in jail. But perhaps that's just my overactive imagination of disaster at work.
Why did you pick me and ruin both of our lives? Asu demands an answer. Answer! Answer! Oyku looks as if she will answer but does not. She gets up, walks out of the bedroom and shuts the door behind her, leaving Asu (and us) exasperated.
Ugur and Demir are driving to the job. Ugur notes that Demir has been acting weird since the bookstore. Demir says, I’m going to visit Oyku tomorrow. He feels terrible; he misses Oyku very much and he tried not to show it. Ugur is happy to hear this. He thought Demir went crazy but now he takes this as a sign Demir is recovering. This is great, says Ugur! I’ll go with you and we can all spend time together. You are her father; a father and daughter shouldn’t fight. Demir says yes, I am her father. Ugur suggests they pick Oyku up from school and take her for pizza. Yes, Oyku loves pizza! Demir’s spirits are lifted. He says, I’m going to visit my daughter tomorrow! Both guys are smiling. Demir says we will go to work then we will visit Oyku. (¡Ojala!)
Oyku is doing her homework and Asu is still in bed. A worried Cemal calls Asu; She doesn’t answer. Jilet calls Cemal. Cemal asks, will we take care of Demir and Ugur tonight?
Our guys find the house and park. They get out of the car, put on their masks, and make their way. Demir picks the lock and they are in. They search through the rooms and locate the safe. Demir unlocks the safe and gets the jewels. (It all seems too easy, right?) As they leave the room, the lights go on and…surprise! It’s Jilet and his crew! No way, says Ugur. The guys are in shock. Jilet says, look at you, working very hard! He asks, are you not happy to see me? It’s a setup, exclaims Ugur! Jilet orders his guys to take Demir and Ugur inside a room.
Demir and Ugur are handcuffed and tied up back to back on chairs. Jilet is enjoying this and says it’s just like the old days, you me, lots of action. Ugur makes a plea to remove the cuffs. Jilet gives them the rundown. He will leave and the police will be here shortly. Why? Because he called them and told them what was planned. They know your names. They have been looking for these jewels for a long time. Jilet is returning the jewels and the two thieves because he is such a good citizen who helps the police.
Ugur asks why? (does he really have to ask?) Jilet reminds Ugur that they sent him to prison, and this is his revenge. Demir shouts at Jilet, leave already! Get out! Ugur thinks Demir shouldn’t take that tone and they start to argue. Ugur tries one last time to negotiate, but Jilet tells him to shut up. Have fun comrades! With that, Jilet and crew leave. Ugur calls after him, Jilet! Jilet! Ugur is in a panic. Demir, it’s over for us! We’ll spend the rest of our lives in prison! Demir says shut up, I’m trying to think.
Demir remembers he has Oyku’s hair clip in his pocket. Ugur, see if you can get it out. He gets it and drops it before he can give it to Demir. Demir knocks their chairs over and manages to push the clip towards Ugur. Ugur has it and gives it to Demir. Demir picks the handcuffs with the clip. Hurry hurry, the cops will be here soon, Ugur implores. Demir says, just stop moving and keep quiet.
Demir frees Ugur and Ugur frees Demir and they take off. We hear the sirens and see the police arriving. Our guys manage to avoid the police and make it back to the car. Ugur says we were almost arrested; it was a close call. Demir reminds him that the police have their names, courtesy of Jilet. And they are on the surveillance footage. They are screwed! They can’t go home. Demir suggests they go to a hotel and think what to do next.
dondi356
It’s time for Oyku to go to school. Asu won’t get up. Leave me alone, she says and goes back to sleep. Oyku puts on her coat and leaves the apartment.
Demir and Ugur are at the hotel. Demir calls Asu. She doesn’t wake up to take the call and Demir doesn’t leave a message.
Oyku steps off of a bus and looks very confused. She is having an episode. Oyku is still standing in the street and cars are honking as they whiz by her. It’s raining, so she ducks under the awning of a vendor cart. Oyku says, where was I going? Where am I now? She tells herself to stay calm; everything is fine. Everything will work out. She breathes, closes her eyes and repeats, everything is fine. She looks around and spots a public phone. She looks in her bag, takes out a book and runs to the phone. She calls Asu but she’s out cold and doesn’t answer.
Demir tells Ugur to hurry, get ready to go. Demir goes into the bathroom. Ugur is watching tv and flips to a news report. The anchor is talking about the theft of diamonds that were stolen from the Iranian embassy last week. This has damaged Turkish-Iranian relations. The police are looking for the thieves. Our guys’ pictures appear on the screen.
Ugur bangs on the bathroom door. Demir! Demir! We’re doomed! It’s over! Demir exits the bathroom and sees the report. We have to leave, now! Demir’s phone rings. It’s an unknown number. Ugur shouts, don’t take any calls! The cops are looking for us! Demir shuts his phone. Unfortunately, its Oyku calling. Ugur realizes that they can be tracked by their phones. They both remove cards from their phones.
We see Oyku wondering what to do next.
The guys are dressed and make their way down the elevator. Ugur wonders what they should do next. Where should they go? Demir says they need to leave before the police show up. They cover themselves with scarves. Ugur thinks they should go to Anatolia (that’s the Asian side of Turkey) to Sansar Selim. We will stay there until things calm down in Istanbul. Demir thinks they will be caught right away but Ugur has a plan on how they will get there.
The guys check out at the front desk. Ugur asks the clerk to hurry. There is a TV on in the lobby we see the guys’ pictures on screen. They tell the clerk to keep the change and run out of the hotel.
Oyku calls Candan. Candan is surprised to hear from her. Are you ok, she asks? Oyku replies, I’m lost. I don’t know where I am. What? I left my mom to go to school, but I got lost on the way. Can you come pick me up? I’m on my way, don’t worry. Can you see street names? Ahmed Sevci Street and there’s a simit stand. I’ll wait there, says Oyku. Please hurry. Candan tells Oyku not to leave, she will be right there. Ouku runs back to the cart to wait.
Candan arrives. Oyku gets in the car. Candan asks, where’s your mom? Why did you leave on your own? Oyku fibs and says Asu was feeling sick and couldn’t wake up so she decided to leave on her own. Oyku asks to go to school. Candan wants to make sure Oyku is ok. Oyku says she’s fine. She just got confused. Candan asks if everything is ok at home. It’s fine you don’t have to worry, says Oyku. Candan asks for her address; she would like to visit sometime.

Asu is awakened by a banging at her door. Asu! It’s Candan! Open the door! Asu wonders why Candan is here and she staggers to the door. What do you want? How could you let Oyku go to school alone? Asu calls for Oyku; she sees Oyku’s coat and shoes are not there. Candan informs Asu that Oyku left on her own because Asu was sleeping. She got lost and tried calling you and Demir and finally called me.
Asu defends herself by saying she thought Oyku was still home. But she’s glad her smart daughter thought to call Candan. Thank you and goodbye, Candan. Candan stops Asu from closing the door. Candan asks, do you really think you are able to care for her? Are you capable of looking after a young child? Asu is offended. She yells at Candan, I am! Why do you care? It’s none of your business! Leave! Asu goes to close the door again but Candan drops the bomb. Asu, Oyku is sick. (Yes, Candan! Good for you!)
Sick? How? Its serious, says Candan. How serious? Candan wants to come inside to discuss it. Asu lets her in. Candan explains that Oyku suffers from Niemann Pick. Huh? It’s over Asu’s head. It’s a complicated disease and it’s worse than you think, says Candan. Asu laughs and says, I understand. Demir sent you, didn’t he? He told you to come and take my money. He’s made up a story about Oyku being sick, so I’d use the inheritance for expensive treatment. Do you think I’m stupid? (everybody: Yes!) Ok, Candan says, let’s go to see the doctor who is treating Oyku.
Cut to Asu and Candan at Ihsan’s office. He’s explained everything. They are working on potential treatments but there’s nothing definite yet. Asu doesn’t find this acceptable. She asks if there’s been a second opinion. Can’t we ask someone else? Asu rants, why do you believe him? You believe the first thing that comes out of his mouth? Unbelievable!
Ihsan calmly says to Asu, I’d like to tell you what you want to hear but regardless of how many doctors you see, the diagnosis will be the same. The best you can do is to cheer her and make sure she continues to take her medications. Asu storms out of the office with Candan following.
Asu is in a panic and Candan tries to calm her. Listen, Oyku thinks she’s getting better, she says. You can’t tell her that you know about her illness now. You heard the doctor. Cheering her on is what’s important. What can I do, asks Asu? Treat her like a mother would treat her daughter. She chose you! She needs you. Stay strong. You’re lucky, you have the inheritance. You can pay for the treatments and checkups. Bug eyed Asu panics and takes off without another word to Candan.
Cemal is with the shady guy. He tells Cemal they were looking for the guy (the crooked lawyer) but he has left the country. He’s in Italy. Cemal demands to know which city. Shady says to stay calm; they will find him. He’ll go from country to country. He stole too much money. Nothing else Cemal can do except say, find him.
Asu calls Cemal. She’s frantic. Did You find my money? They meet at a restaurant. She’s screaming in the restaurant. I want my money! Give me my money! She accuses Cemal of swindling her. She is causing a scene. Cemal assures her he is on her side. Not good enough for her. She grabs at Cemal for his wallet. Cemal gives her all he has. She turns to leave and he stops her, where are you going? I’m going to Germany! You will pay for this! Cemal says, don’t go. Don’t do this to me again. Quit taking nonsense, says Asu. First you swindle me and then you ask me to stay? I want you both out of my life! She leaves him. (Are we supposed to feel sorry for Cemal?)
dondi356
Ugur and Demir are sneaking through a truck yard. Demir stops and Ugur asks what’s wrong. Demir is crying. Ugur assures him, we’ll disappear for a few months and come back when things cool off. We can buy a phone and you can call Oyku and I can call my mom. Ok, says Demir and they continue on their way.
On the way out of school, Mercan invites Oyku over to study. She will ask her mom. Mercan notices Asu at the bottom of the stairs. We see Asu sitting with Oyku’s big yellow bag. Oyku tells Mercan she will call him later and goes down to Asu. Oyku asks Asu, why did you bring my stuff? Sit down, Oyku. Oyku asks again, why did you bring my bag?
Asu starts, remember the first day we met? You had no idea I was your mother. You called me Asu; you still do. if I were in your place, I wouldn’t call me mother either. She gives Oyku a letter and tells her to read it later. Goodbye, Oyku and with that, Asu gets up and quickly leaves. Oyku calls after her, Asu? Asu? Then she just stands there and starts to cry.
Wow.
And we are out.

Another fantastic recap, dondi!
This was the saddest episode yet. Instead of having Demir and Ugur get out of the trap cleanly, Jilet revealed them as the thieves, forcing them to leave Istanbul just when Oyku needs her father the most.
An aside: there is a restaurant in my neighborhood called "The Anatolian Kitchen". It's good, but I was sad to see the one before that, that I adored, leave the space. It was called The Oaxacan Kitchen. It featured upscale Mexican food, and the cook was an indigenous woman from Oaxaca.
The caper was a bit confusing. So Jilet, a known felon, was supposed to have tied up the real thieves and taken the diamonds to return to...whom?
I really appreciated your recap. I'm amazed by some things that I miss or misinterpret. I thought Cemal was telling some guy that Demir was in Italy and he needed to track him down.
I really hate each and every "episode" that Oyku has. I'm surprised that, as smart as she is, she hasn't caught on that she was lied to about a cure. And, to this day, I wish they'd left that illness out of the whole novela.
Dondi, you’ve given us another excellent recap of yet another sad episode. Thank you!
We knew Asu abandoning Oyku was inevitable, but to leave her at the steps of the school with all her belongings was heartless and cruel. I’ve never thought of Asu as a villain, just a wreckless selfish bitter woman, but this puts her at a while new level. She needs to get a good anvil.
So Cemal is looking for the lawyer who bailed and went to Italy. How easily it is for some of these bad guys to get info so fast!
Novelera, I’m with you on wishing that they had left this disease out of this TN. Why couldn’t they pick something that had a more positive prognosis?
I’m wondering how dumb and dumber will get out of this. Maybe if they go to the cops and help them trap Jilet and Cemal again, they might have a chance. Here’s hoping...
Sorry to be so late to the party. Since the second Telemundo Y Más page will be posted in about 20 minutes, I think I'll wait until then to post a comment.
Let me just say that I'll do a recap of tonight's episode.
