Hija #56 part 1

Slight rewind of Mercan and Oyku talking and Oyku falling into a trance.

Mercan tries to snap her out of it. Oyku? Oyku are you ok? She snaps back but looks confused. What happened, asks Mercan? My aunt was acting weird today, says Oyku. She was going to say something but then she did not. Mercan asks if she is talking about Candan. Oyku doesn’t answer, she still looks confused. Mercan is going to buy juice. He asks if Oyku wants anything. No answer. He leaves.

Oyku gets up, takes her coat and her backpack, and leaves the classroom. The bell rings and the children come back into the room and take their seats. Sevgi closes the door.

A teacher in another classroom opens a window and asks the guard in the school yard to get a map from storage. No one is there to see Oyku leave the school grounds.

Demir goes to Ugur’s restaurant. What’s up? Demir has something to tell Ugur but the boss is watching. Ugur can’t sit and talk now. He asks Demir to sit and wait at a table.

Ihsan goes to see Mu-rat. Ihsan says he ran into Candan in the hallway and she said you two spoke. Are you really charging them, Ihsan asks? Murat says he is and is that a problem? Ihsan says you know that family lacks resources. The Rat answers if they can’t pay, then she shouldn’t have treatment here. Ihsan continues, you know I took your job offer just so I could take Oyku’s case. If Oyku goes to another hospital…. Murat asks if Ihsan will leave if Oyku goes. Listen Ihsan, says Mu-rat, you are free to do what you want. We don’t provide free treatment. We are not a charity. He asks Ihsan to leave.

Cemal is outside his building when Candan pulls up. He goes over to her. She is cold to him. He understands and he will leave her alone but then he calls her back to ask, how’s Oyku? She’s fine. He’s happy to hear it. He says he was worried when he saw her outside like that in the middle of the night. He looks sincere. Candan tells him not to worry, they are looking after her. He leaves.

Ugur brings Demir a tea. Demir tells Ugur he is in desperate need of money. He got a call from the hospital and now they want him to pay. Ugur asks about the important guy who is Candan’s friend. Yes, Mu-rat. He’s the problem. He’s in love with Candan and he became jealous after we married, says Demir. This is his revenge. Demir asks if he can borrow money from Ugur. Ugur is broke , too. But he will get Demir a piece of cake because they just can’t sit and chat. Ugur thinks the cake might help Demir to think better.

Sevgi starts the lesson and realizes that Oyku is not there. No one knows where she is. Sevgi leaves the classroom to go look. She looks everywhere; she even goes out into the yard. Where could she be?

Demir gets up to leave. Ugur won’t charge him for the cake. Before he leaves, Demir gets a call from Sevgi. Is Oyku with you, she asks? No, isn’t she at school? Sevgi tells Demir that Oyku is missing. She looked for her everywhere. He tells Sevgi he’s on his way. Ugur wants to go, too, and runs out with Demir. The boss stops him, where do you think you’re going? Ugur tell him this is something urgent and he must go. They argue a bit until Ugur turns in his apron and he quits!

Ugur suggests that Demir call Candan. Maybe she is with Oyku. Demir calls and Oyku is not with her. Candan is worried and wants to meet him but he asks her to go home in case Oyku shows up there. He hangs up. Demir starts to fear that Cemal has something to do with this. The guys take a cab to school.

Hija #56 Part 2

Apparently Candan is on the same wavelength as Demir; she makes a call to Cemal. Is Oyku with you? No, what’s the matter? Candan demands the truth—if she’s with you… No, she’s not. Cemal wants to know what is going on. Candan tells him Oyku is missing. Cemal looks worried. Candan threatens him. if she’s with you and you’re lying to me… no, she is not with me.

We see Oyku waiting at a bus stop. She is staring blankly like she’s on auto pilot.

The school principal thinks they should call the police. There’s nothing else they can do.

Oyku gets on a bus.

Demir and Ugur come to the classroom. No one knows anything. Demir goes to Mercan. Do you know where Oyku could be? Did she say anything? Mercan says, no she didn’t say anything. I went to get juice and then she was gone. Demir asks him to start from the beginning. Can you remember anything? Can you help me? Mercan recalls their conversation before class. Oyku said she was very happy today. I asked her why and she mentioned Candan. Mercan remembers, she also mentioned her aunt. What, her aunt, asks Demir? What did she say? Oyku said her aunt was going to tell her something important and then she changed her mind. That’s all. Ugur wants to leave with Demir but Demir tells him they should split up. He asks Ugur to find Cemal. Demir takes a cab.

Cemal is driving around looking for Oyku. He is anxious.

Oyku gets off the bus and starts walking. She arrives at the house she shared with Zeynep. She rings the bell.

Demir’s cab is caught in a traffic jam. He pays and runs out of the cab.

Demir makes it to Zeynep’s old house and is relieved to see Oyku sitting on the steps. Oyku looks very sad sitting there. He approaches her. Oyku! There you are. She stares at him as if she doesn’t know who he is. Sweetie? He reaches out but she pushes him away. Who are you, she asks?

Demir tries again, sweetie? Oyku jumps up and backs away, don’t touch me mister! My aunt will be here soon! You’re a stranger! Leave! Demir is crying. He doesn’t know what to say. He has to think of something. He wipes his eyes and tells Oyku he is not a stranger. I’m…I’m…I’m Demir and you must be Oyku. Yes, how do you know my name, she asks? Demir tell her he is friends with her aunt. She had to work late. Since she trusts me a lot, she asked me to look after you. Oyku wants to know where her aunt is. Demir says she is busy; she asked me to pick you up. Come with me. Oyku refuses to leave with him. She insists on waiting there.

Demir says, let’s call your aunt. He pretends to call Zeynep. When will you be home? Oyku wants to talk to Zeynep but of course Demir can’t let her. He continues talking to no one, I’ll tell Oyku you can’t make it. Yes, I’ll tell her. Zeynep, Oyku wants to talk to you. Hello? Hello? Demir says the call dropped. Your aunt’s friend is very sick; she had to rush to her.

Demir continues, your aunt called Ms. Sevgi but since you left school early, she asked me to pick you up and look after you until she gets back. Oyku is worried she doesn’t have her keys and can’t get inside. Demir says he will stay with her and asks if she wants to get ice cream. No, Oyku wants to wait for her aunt there.

Demir sends a text to Sevgi: I’m going to call you. Please play along. I’ll explain later. Please trust me. Ugur is still there with Sevgi; she shows him Demir’s text.

Hija #56 part 3

Demir suggests they call Sevgi and Oyku agrees. She asks him, how do you know my teacher? I’m friends with her, too. Demir makes the call. Ugur wants it on speaker. Sevgi wants to know why he sent that message. He’s calling to tell her not to worry, Oyku is there with him. Sevgi and Ugur are relieved and ask how she is. Demir says, well, she doesn’t know me; she’s never seen me before. Demir asks if Sevgi can talk to Oyku so she will feel at ease.

Sevgi is confused but Ugur realizes what’s happening. Demir wants Sevgi to confirm that Zeynep called to say she was going on a trip. Demir gives the phone to Oyku. Ugur encourages Sevgi to do what Demir asked—just repeat what he said.

Oyku tells Sevgi a man named Demir is saying he’s my aunt’s friend and that he is here to pick me up. Did my aunt tell you this, she asks? Yes, I spoke with your aunt, Oyku. I was going to tell you, but you had already left. Don’t worry, he is a close friend of your aunt. You will be ok with him. Oyku thanks Sevgi and gives the phone back to Demir. He thanks Sevgi and hangs up.

Demir asks, do you believe me now? My aunt never mentioned you, Oyku says. Demir explains, we are old friends and recently reconnected. We hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Will you come with me? He holds out his hand to Oyku.

Oyku does not take his hand but she does pick up her bag and leave with Demir. She asks him why he is crying. Are you in pain? What is the matter? He bends town to talk. He tells her, I’m sick and my leg hurts a lot. I’ll go to the hospital and see the doctor. I made the appointment already. Will you go with me? I don’t want to go alone. Oyku agrees to go with him.

Demir sends Candan a text to fill her in on what’s happening: I told her I’m a friend of her aunt. I made up a story to get her to the hospital. I can’t talk because she is with me now. I’m taking her to Dr. Ihsan. Wait for me here. Candan leaves for the hospital.

A teary Ugur tells Sevgi, did you know I was the first to meet her? I met her before she met Demir. She had a huge bag that was bigger than she was, and she asked me about Demir. We see a flashback of that fateful day. What happened next, asks Sevgi? Ugur continues, she came into our lives. Demir didn’t like the idea first, but he got used to it and we grew very fond of her. Sevgi asks about Oyku’s illness. You won’t believe it. It’s very rare. She has had episodes before but nothing this serious. Sevgi is in tears now. too. Sevgi places her hand on Ugur’s arm and tells him not to worry. Let’s stay calm. Don’t cry. Demir and Oyku need you. Ugur gets a text from Demir, they are going to the hospital. Sevgi and Ugur leave.

Demir and Oyku arrive at the hospital. She tells Demir to hurry and asks if he is scared. He doesn’t have to be scared because she will help him. Demir says he needs to use the bathroom first. He tells Oyku to wait in the lobby. He can’t stop crying. He washes his face. He tells himself to be strong. He makes a call to ihsan. I need to talk to you immediately.

They enter Ihsan’s office. Ihsan greets Demir and introduces himself to Oyku. She doesn’t recognize him. Demir explains that Oyku is his friend’s niece and he asked her to come with him.

Hija #56 part 4

Ihsan starts to examine Demir while Oyku watches. Mr. Demir, extend your arms and close your eyes. Now touch your nose with your index finger. Now, with the other hand. Oyku is doing the same and Ihsan is watching her. Ihsan tells Demir he’s doing it wrong and Oyku volunteers to show Demir how it’s done.

Ihsan sits Oyku next to Demir on the examination table. They start the exam over. Arms out, eyes closed, touch nose. Oyku puts her finger to the side of her nose. Next try, she touches her forehead. Very good, says Ihsan. Demir is upset. Ihsan has a serious look.

Ihsan wants to do one more test. He touches Demir’s neck but Demir says it tickles. Ihsan wants to try it on Oyku. He tells her, close your eyes. He moves his instrument across Oyku’s neck. She doesn’t feel anything, and she asks when are you going to do it? He tries again. Oyku still can’t feel it. A concerned Ihsan is done with the exam. He helps Oyku down and tells her to stay outside with the nurse while he finishes with Demir.

Outside the office, Candan rushes up to Oyku. Are you ok? Oyku has no idea who she is. Demir interrupts, how are you, Candan? Demir introduces Candan to Oyku as his wife. He tells Candan this is the famous Oyku. Am I famous, she asks? Yes, your aunt has told us so much about you, says Demir. We know you well. Candan confirms this and tells Oyku that’s why she ran to hug her. Demir says he has to go back inside to talk to the doctor and asks Candan and Oyku to wait there.

Back inside the office, Demir releases a stream of questions: Dr. Ihsan, what’s wrong? Is Oyku going to stay like this? Will she forget everything? Is she ever going to remember me? Demir waits for Ihsan’s answer.

And we are out.

Oh, Dondi, how were you able to recount such a heart wrenching episode? I was in tears through most of the episode and it was a repeat as I read your recap. It seems that you are getting the most disturbing episodes to recap. Thank you!

I don't even know how to start. Seeing Demir's anguish and pain as he looked for Oyku and then when he found her and realized that she did not recognize him was so distressing. But I was so impressed that he was still able to think on his feet and get Oyku to the hospital.

Looks like Oyku's attack is bringing Ugur and Sevgi closer together...MEHHHH

I'm wondering what Cemal will do when he finds out about Oyku's illness. Will his heart soften enough to give up his wish for vengeance and maybe offer to pay off some of the hospital costs. And where does Cemal get money; he has no work. Could it be that he somehow kept the money that they stole years back?

Demir sure could use that money that Oyku's grandfather left her. In the meantime, maybe the womenfolk can brainstorm and come up with some ideas of raising money for Oyku,...a raffle, bake sales...have they ever heard of GoFundMe???

Thanks so much, dondi356, for this unbelievably good recap of an unbelievably bleak episode. Just about the only bright spot was Demir's ability to think fast on his feet. (I guess his con man experience helps! :-)  ) First, he makes up a story about being Oyku's "aunt's" good friend whom she designated to pick Oyku up, and then he gets Sevgi to participate, and finally he finds a clever way to get Oyku to the hospital. Actually, Dr. Ihsan is no slouch in the cleverness department, either, figuring out a way to examine Oyku without her realizing it. If only the exam had yielded more encouraging results. :-(

Demir may be flat broke, but he apparently has a small stash squirreled away for "flat broke" moments. How else could he afford to keep taking taxis?

Ugur too is apparently flat broke. And his impulsively quitting his job won't help his finances. But he's nothing if not a very loyal friend. And he, too, clearly loves Oyku.

I feared at first that when Sevgi and Ugur were planning to leave the school to head for the hospital, Captain Hussein would appear. I also feared that when Demir and Oyku arrive at the hospital, the first person they'd encounter would be Mu-RAT. (As you can see, I spent the entire episode in fear of one thing or another. Thank heaven for the weekend.

Rgv Chick, I'd almost forgotten about the money Oyku's grandfather left her. Though actually, he left it to Asu until Oyku reaches 18 (if she ever does :-(   ). I wonder whether there's a way for her to get it now, since Asu has abandoned her. Then again, is there any money left? Or did the shyster lawyer abscond with it, having had Asu sign whatever papers he needed?

Demir is living up to the title of the show. I felt a little pinch in my heart when Demir cried on the steps and again in the hospital restroom. Powerful stuff.

I guess Zeynep will be back in the mix.

Really hating Mu-RAT now.

Remember when we thought Ihsan had no heart? Last night he showed a little compassion. I know he mentioned his work, too, but I think he really cares about Oyku. Maybe he can make some house calls for the routine stuff.

Could be wishful thinking on my part but I feel Cemal will soften.

Don’t know if Cemal will resume the hunt for Sezer’s money once he finds out about Oyku’s illness. He only wanted it because he thought that was the way he would establish a relationship with Asu.

Rgv Chick, Cemal gets his money from his benefactor, Arif, the guy who owns the car dealership. Cemal saved the guy’s life in prison.

GoFundMe is a great idea! Who wouldn’t kick in a few bucks?

Where do I find the GoFundMeTurkey site?

Another fantastic recap, dondi. And, yes, it hurt almost as much to read it as to see it, Rgv Chick.

OT. A former high school football player in my town ended up homeless. This is about 10 years after he played for the school. A classmate encountered him on the street and started a GoFundMe for him. The classmate then posted something on Nextdoor. Within a couple of weeks $40K was contributed. The man is now off the street. His benefactor got him enrolled in the Affordable Care Act, and he's receiving medical attention for some issues he had. This has been such a wonderful story!

So..back to the heart wrenching episode. I have NO idea where they'll go with this. It could be that they try to win her over all over again, making up a reason for Zeynep's absence. Or she could have a bit of recovery on Monday, remembering her father.

How could Candan even be civil to Cemal? He participated in kidnapping her!

I'm still confused about the missing inheritance. From what little we saw of Sezer, presented as a wealthy man, it's hard to believe he would have had a thief for an attorney. I vaguely mention someone here posting something about Cemal having an attorney regarding the inheritance, but I don't remember that. I expect the money to be recouped and help with Oyku's treatment.

Mu-RAT. I'm trying to think of a punishment bad enough for him. I also wonder what happened to Candan's house. Mu-RAT bought it but not much has been said about that, especially the valuable paintings.

Candan did say something to MuRAT about needing some of her inheritance to help Oyku. Either I don't pay enough attention or the writers gloss over things a lot. Was it MuRAT she spoke to? Why would he have anything to do with her getting funds from her inheritance? I know she accessed some money to open her veterinary practice. You'd think she's sell one of those paintings quickly and pay off Oyku's hospital bill.

Dondi, I too thought of the possibility that Zeynep might come back into Oyku's life. Maybe Demir will contact her so that she can help Oyku transition to living with Demir.BUt I'm really hoping that Oyku snaps out of this attack in the next episode.

Rgv Chick, I too would rather see Oyku snap out of this trance quickly. But whether she does or not, it seems likely that things are not going well and, barring a miracle, will probably continue to get worse, until....

Frankly, this is NOT what I look for or want in a telenovela. There are enough problems in Real Life. :-(    But since this is a telenovela, I suppose miracles can occur. ¡Ojalá!
