Slight rewind. Cemal and Demir are talking outside the ICU.
Cemal says, I know who killed your father. The night your father was killed, there were three people who took part in the robbery. Ugur was with them. What are you talking about, asks Demir. Cemal continues his story, naming Seki, Ahmed and Ugur. The person who killed you father… the person who shot him…. was Ugur.
Demir is stunned; he tells Cemal, you’re lying Cemal shakes his head no. Demir insists it’s a lie. He continues, what you are saying is ridiculous. What is wrong with you? Don’t you get tired of making up stories? Leave us all alone—me, my daughter, Ugur and his mother. I have more important things to worry about. Cemal very calmly responds, my life was ruined because of a lie. I won’t let the same thing happen to you, Demir. With that, Cemal leaves.
Demir doesn’t have much time to think about what Cemal said because Candan calls him. He goes to meet her at Ihsan’s office. Ugh, The Rat is there, too. Demir asks Ihsan if there is any progress. Ihsan asks Demir to sit so they can talk but Demir would rather stand. He tells Demir they have good news. You found a donor? No, but we will perform the transplant here when we do. The costs with cover the cost of Oyku’s treatment, Ihsan says, thanks to Mu-rat.
Demir is surprised, he doesn’t understand. The Rat pipes up, you have nothing to worry about. The hospital will pay for everything we do for Oyku. (Yeah right. As my dad used to say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch.) Candan smiles at Demir and shakes her head yes. Demir thanks Mu-rat. This means a lot to him. Mu-rat tells Demir that despite their differences, he will ensure that Oyku receives the best treatment.
Candan asks Ihsan if Oyku will have to stay in the hospital until a donor is found. Ihsan says that Oyku should be able to go home tomorrow. She doesn’t have to stay. Mu-rat says he will be in his office if they need him. Mu-rat extends his hand to Demir and they shake. Demir doesn’t look very happy; maybe he’s a bit wary? A bit embarrassed? Still in shock?
Outside Ihsan’s office, Candan says, Isn’t it a miracle? Demir can’t believe it. She asks him what’s wrong. He says nothing’s wrong and she reaches out to take his hands. She tells Demir, things are getting better. Mu-rat comes out and sees them together like this.
Demir goes to the ICU and stands at the window. He says, I have good news princess; you can go home tomorrow. Everything is going to be ok. Summer is coming we can go on vacation. Swimming, sand castles and seashells. From now on, I promise you will be the happiest girl in a world. But, Demir says, I need just one miracle.
Candan goes to Mu-rat’s office. He wanted to speak with her alone. Why? He repeats that the hospital will cover costs. But for that to happen, he needs something from her and Demir.
Later on in Oyku’s room, Candan has something important to tell Demir. She’s about to tell him when Ugur and Sevgi arrive and interrupt. Sevgi says everyone at the school is giving blood.
Oyku wakes up and asks, why are we at the hospital? Because you got sick, Demir answers. I told you not to runaround and sweat. Oyku reminds him she’s a little girl and says, can’t I play? She asks, when are we going home? Ugur thinks that someone was jealous and gave Oyku the evil eye. Candan and Demir step out to talk.
dondi356
Candan tells Demir that Mu-rat wants something in return for the treatment. Demir suspected this. He wants us to give the media an interview about Oyku’s illness and mention the hospital. Candan says, they would be broadcasting Oyku’s illness. He wants to use my daughter to publicize his hospital? Unfortunately, yes. He has no shame, says Demir. Candan thinks they should do it. Think of it as an opportunity. Many more people will see we need a donor. And what if we refuse, asks Demir. Well, you know Mu-rat. If we don’t accept, he could do something stupid and cause more problems.
Demir is worried, Oyku doesn’t know how serious her illness is. Candan agrees but says they can talk to the reporters and ask for some consideration. Demir, you have to make a decision. Mu-rat wants an answer.
Demir goes to see The Rat. Did you speak with Candan, he asks Demir. Yes, I accept with one condition. What is it? The report can’t be published or broadcast until after the transplant is done. Oyku can’t find out how sick she really is. Mu-rat thinks that’s ok. It could be later. He will speak with the reporters and let them know. Demir stares at Mu-rat like he doesn’t believe him. Mu-rat says, I said yes, Demir, do you need me to sign something? You can trust me. (does anyone believe Mu-rat? But I suppose Demir has no choice at this point) Demir thanks Mu-rat and leaves. The Rat snickers.
We see Ihsan being interviewed. Mu-rat is also there. He’s explaining Niemann Pick. Mu-rat signals to him and Ihsan continues, the patient, Oyku Gokturk, is receiving the necessary treatment with all the resources at our disposal. Ihsan’s interview is over and the reporters want to interview Oyku now. Ihsan is concerned and says she’s resting now but The Rat interrupts and tells the reporter to go ahead with the interview. Ihsan is ticked at Mu-rat. He tells The Rat that Oyku needs to avoid stress and now we are forcing her to be on camera. Mu-rat says, don’t exaggerate. What’s the problem? This is a great opportunity for you. That’s why you came to this hospital. Ihsan says he came to do research. So do it, says Mu-rat, I’ll be in my office.
The reporters show up at Oyku’s room. Murat said it was ok to do the interview. Dad what’s going on, Oyku asks. Demir tells her, you’re going to be famous. These people are interviewing hospital patients and are interested in interviewing you. They are interviewing others, too, says Candan. Oyku asks, I will be on TV? Yes. Oyku is excited and Candan fixes her hair. Demir asks the reporters to step outside. He tells them Oyku can’t know how serious her illness is. She thinks she’s here for the flu. No problem, says the reporter, Dr. Ihsan told us.
Demir is outside getting some air. Candan comes to give him his coat. Demir can’t stand hospitals. He can’t stand seeing Oyku in a hospital bed with tubes and machines hooked up to her. All that equipment pinging and beeping. Demir is staring straight ahead and says the worst part is I can’t stand lying to her. Having to tell her every day that everything is ok. It’s led me to think the worst. To think of really dark stuff. Tears fall. He feels like his head is going to burst; he might explode at any moment. He tells Candan to go home and get some rest so she can watch Oyku tomorrow. He will have to go to work. They go back inside.
dondi356
Demir tries to settle in a chair at Oyku’s bedside. He can’t get comfortable. He sneaks into bed next to Oyku. She objects saying, you could catch the flu from me. He reminds her he is the Invincible Iron Man. Then she says, dad I’m tired of being sick. Demir tells her but that’s how people grow. When you get sick, you get better. And if you fall, you get up stronger. What if we skipped that part, asks Oyku. No, says Demir, I don’t want to miss a minute of your life. I want to watch you grow up. I want you to enjoy every second of your life.
Oyku comes home. Ugur is with them. Can I watch TV, she asks her dad. Just one hour he says. Just sit here and rest today. Demir has to go to work; Ugur says he will leave with him. Demir tells Candan to call if anything happens. Mufide shows up; she came to find out how Oyku is doing. They inform her about the flu story. Mufide will keep the secret.
Ugur wants to ask Demir something. Has Cemal contacted you again? No, why? Ugur says good, I hope he stays away from us. Ugur says he asked out of curiosity. Demir thinks back to what Cemal said about Ugur shooting and killing his father. Demir is looking at Ugur and Ugur asks him, why are you looking at me like that? It’s nothing, Demir answers.
Betul comes to pick up Mercan after school and sees Sevgi. Betul asks about Oyku. Sevgi says she’s doing better and Mercan asks if Oyku will be back at school tomorrow. Sevgi tells him, why don’t you ask yourself? Sevgi is going there to visit now, and they can come with her if they want. Great, let’s go.
Oyku tells Mufide how she suddenly got sick and ended up in the hospital. Mufide says Oyku must have caught a chill. Oyku needs to eat and Mufide will make her a mint tea. Oyku is not feeling very hungry when Candan brings her soup. They encourage her to eat. Oyku informs Mufide that she (Oyku) is famous now. How? They were interviewing people at the hospital and I’m going to be on TV. Mufide says don’t forget me when you are famous. Oyku will never forget Mufide; she loves her. They hug.
Demir and Ugur part ways at the restaurant. Demir asks Ugur what he’s going to do. Oh, he’s just going to walk around. Demir wants him to go back to Oyku. Ugur says he needs to clear his mind first. Demir thanks Ugur for everything. No need to thank me, Ugur says. He would do anything for his niece.
Kemal asks about Oyku. We are waiting for a donor, says Demir. Kemal wants to give blood, too. He would do anything for Oyku. Demir really appreciates this.
Sevgi, Betul and Mercan stop at a bakery. Mercan picks out some goodies for Oyku. Betul hopes this is not an imposition. No, says Sevgi, Oyku will be happy to see Mercan. Sevgi informs Betul about the seriousness of Oyku’s illness; she needs a bone marrow transplant. They are looking for a donor.
Ugur goes to the tea house to find Faik. Faik appears, sees Ugur and runs. Ugur chases Faik down and tackles him. He shouts at Faik, you’ve got some nerve telling Cemal about Demir’s father. I’m going to kill you! Faik gets out of Ugur’s grip and pulls a razor on him. Faik says, are you going to kill me for keeping your secret? Ugur tells him to put the blade away. Faik says, you think you can get away with this?
Ugur tells Faik, you don’t know anything. You weren’t there! You don’t know what happened! My brother was there, and he told me, says Faik. He saw you kill Demir’s father the night of the robbery. Ugur shouts, everything you are saying is a lie! Faik says to tell that to Demir. Faik slashes Ugur on the hand and escapes. (maybe there is hope that Ugur isn't the killer?)
dondi356
Ugur flashes back to that fateful night. Ugur, Ahmed and Seki sneak into a company’s grounds. Ugur will be the lookout and the other two will go in to do the job. One of the guys gives him a gun. Ugur says he doesn’t know how to use it. The guy says you just pull the trigger. Ugur waits outside while the two go in. Ugur snaps out of the flashback and says, I didn’t mean for that to happen.
Candan answers the door for Sevgi, Betul and Mercan and explains the flu story to everyone. Oyku is happy to see Mercan. Mufide puts her hand out for Sevgi to kiss. They all sit to start the visit.
Demir is busy at the restaurant. He’s exhausted and can hardly stand; he’s feeling dizzy. A co-worker tells him to take a break. He will cover. Demir goes outside to sit; he calls Candan. How is Oyku? Don’t worry, she’s fine. She was feeling down now she’s happy. Mercan, Betul and Sevgi came to visit. Jealous Demir asks, why is Mercan there? Well, he wanted to wish her a speedy recovery, she answers. Do you want to talk to Oyku? No, Demir has to get back to work; he was just checking in.
Mufide comments on how sweet the kids are, and she can tell that Sevgi does a great job teaching them. Betul asks Mufide if she has children. She tells Betul about her wonderful son and that he’s also friends with Sevgi. Sevgi smiles and says yes. Ugur calls Mufide. She tells him to come by and pick her up at Demir’s.
Mercan asks if Oyku got permission for the field trip. Ah, no! Oyku forgot! Candan asks what trip? Sevgi explains there is a one-day trip. Oyku asks Candan if she can go but Candan says she can’t make that decision on her own. They can discuss it tonight with Demir. Oyku tells Mercan she thinks she will be able to go. Why would her father say no? (Mercan going is enough reason for Demir to say no)
The visitors are leaving and Ugur walks up. Ugur asks if Sevgi is going home; he can walk her. Ugur looks at Mufide. She tells him to go with Sevgi, she will wait at Demir’s. Mufide watches Ugur and Sevgi walk away and tells Candan that they look so nice together. Candan smiles and agrees.
Ugur has his hands in his pocket and Sevgi takes his arm as they walk. Did my mom interrogate you, he asks. Sevgi says Mufide is so sweet. Sevgi trips and Ugur takes his hands out of his pocket to grab her. She sees his bloody hand and he makes up a story about fishing with a friend and a hook caught his hand. She insists he see a doctor.
Later on, Sevgi asks Ugur, why did you lie? The doctor said it wasn’t a hook, it was a knife. What does that doctor know, says Ugur, he’s right out of med school. Sevgi presses him saying, you think I’m a five year old you can fool? Ugur tells a story that’s only slightly closer to the truth. He was fooling around with a friend who had a knife and he was accidentally slashed. Sevgi is annoyed. She tells Ugur he’s too old to play around like that.
dondi356
Ugur wants to make it up to her with a coffee. She doesn’t have time. She has to go to school. But you just left school, he says. Oh, she is going to work with hearing impaired students. Today is her first day. Ugur wants to go with her. She warns him these kids are more mature than he is. They know not to play with knives. Just a joke. They smile.
Demir is finished with work. Kemal gives him an envelope with all of the day’s tips. The coworkers want you to have it, he says to Demir. They want to help your daughter. She is sick and you need the money. Demir is touched. He thanks everyone.
Candan is setting the table for dinner. Oyku is anxious for Demir to come home. She asks Candan, do you think dad will let me go on the field trip? She doesn’t know; let’s talk to him.
Demir arrives home and Oyku’s all over him with hugs and kisses. He asks Oyku how she's feeling. She’s strong and full of energy! Uh oh you want something from me, says Demir. Demir looks at the table and says he’s very hungry. Oyku wants to ask him now but Candan whispers to ask later. Demir suspects something, why are they whispering? No reason, is the answer from both simultaneously.
After dinner, Oyku asks about the trip to Sile. Can we go? It’s only for the day and it’s a family trip. Demir says no, they are not going. Why? Because you are still sick. Oyku is disappointed. Please, dad? Demir says don’t push it. You just got out of the hospital; you have to rest. Oyku tries to make her case, but all my friends are going. Demir won’t relent. Oyku says she doesn’t care, she is going! He firmly states, that’s enough!
And we are out.
dondi356
I'm beginning to think I simply need a comment template that begins, "Well, dondi356, you've done it again! Another magnificent recap!" I think every comment I make seems to start with some variant of this. I've run out of adjectives to describe how amazing your recaps are. And, of course, that includes this one. You have captured absolutely everything, and have done so clearly and gracefully. And you've included some excellent asides as well.
I remember your praising my recaps because they include dialogue in quotation marks. But I'm impressed with your recaps because you capture far more than I do, and generally without needing any quotation marks at all. Indeed, I've been trying to move away from the quotation marks (so far, not very successfully).
One key moment for me in last night's episode was Faik's saying that it was his brother who told him about Ugur. Like you, I wonder whether perhaps there's a chance that Ugur was not responsible for Demir's father's death. I guess we'll eventually find out. As you note, Ugur has a flashback to the night of the killing. Then, in the present, he thinks that it didn't happen the way Faik says. ¡Ojalá!
And wow, Mu-RAT is becoming more rat-like by the minute. Thank goodness that Dr. Ihsan is there. He is trying his best to look out for Oyku's best interests, whereas the RAT cares only about what's best for himself/itself.
Oy, I'm not looking forward to Ugur's meeting with the hard-of-hearing students. I remember what a fool he made of himself in front of Sevgi's class. The writers seem intent on still making Ugur the vehicle for stupid scenes. I was hoping that his causing Demir to drop the salad on the floor might be the last scene featuring Ugur the Idiot, but his wanting to meet with Sevgi's new students gives me an uneasy feeling.
Well, that's all for now. I'll do tonight's recap.
You make me blush, Juanita. I’m just happy if my recaps can add to the conversation. And I am thankful that everyone is tolerant of my many typos and lousy grammar and punctuation. I fully expect the grammar police to break down my door one day.
Anyway, I agree that the scene with Faik was a key moment. I wonder who the brother is, Ahmed or Seki. Now I am hopeful that the brother is the killer, not Ugur. I think Ugur won’t give this up. He’s going to go after Faik’s brother and cause a whole other mess. Kind of like he did with Sabri.
Can we count on Mu-RAT to release the interview early? It’s one thing to mess with Demir but to cause harm to Oyku is unforgivable. This time I hope Candan punches Mu-RAT in the nose.
As painful as it is to watch at times, I think Ugur will be providing the comic relief until the end.
dondi356
Juanita, can I borrow your template with the high praise for dondi's recaps? This was a very good one!
Well, I was holding my breath when Oyku asked to watch television. I really expected the interview to be shown as she sat there, with the somber voice-over about Niemann Pick. So the Rat is counting on publicity from the free treatment of Oyku to get more "business" at the hospital. That's sort of an odd plot turn. And, at least for now, no coming on to Candan.
I also picked up on Faik's not actually having seen Ugur shoot Demir's father. But it's beginning to look like they're going with Ugur being his usual inept self and the gun somehow going off.
So..there appear to be quite a lot of people having their blood analyzed for compatibility for a bone marrow transplant.
I am enjoying how fond Mufide is becoming of Sevgi. I can't believe the writers would go with her finding out he'd killed someone and the whole slow and very tender relationship being ruined.
It's also amusing how much better Demir is than Ugur as a waiter. And it was very touching how the others want to help him. I also found it odd that, after his first day, he got paid. Do people in Turkey get paid every day?
Thanks, novelera!
I also thought Oyku was going to see the interview. There's still time for her to see it before the transplant.
I figured Mufide would like Sevgi right away. How did they get rid of Umran?
One would think Ugur that would make a better server than Demir. Ugur is an extrovert and Demir is grumpy with a quick temper. The difference is Demir is motivated because of Oyku.
dondi356
Demir insists that Oyku cannot go on the class trip. She looks very unhappy. Without another word, she goes into her room and closes the door. Demir feels he has to justify his decision to Candan. Oyku needs to rest, he tells her. What if she gets worse? Candan reminds him that Oyku is just a little girl. She wants to be with her friends. What if.... Demir finishes Candan's uncompleted sentence: What if it's her last trip? He tells Candan that he doesn't know what else he can do for her. Candan suggests that perhaps they should consult Dr. Ihsan; perhaps he would permit the trip. Demir remains in a funk. Candan goes into Oyku's room. "Don't be angry with your father," she says. "He's just trying to protect you. You're still sick." Oyku replies, "All my friends are going--everyone except me. It's not fair." Candan lies down next to Oyku, and they hold each other until Oyku falls asleep.
In the morning, Oyku is very pleasant to Candan. She completely ignores Demir. She speaks only to Candan. She thanks her for breakfast. When Demir addresses Oyku, she acts as if he's not there. She turns on the TV. (I of course am nervous, but the TV program turns out to be harmless.)
Demir reports for work. His boss asks him whether everything is OK. Demir replies that it's difficult to be a father. The boss tells him there will be more problems when she gets older. It sounds like he speaks from experience.
Demir goes over to a table where a young girl is sitting with her father. She wants ice cream. Her father says she can't have any. She insists. He insists back. Demir tells her, "We don't have any ice cream, but let me tell you a secret." He bends over and in a low voice tells her that they have a special delicious pudding with strawberries. She's delighted, and so is her father.
Demir takes out his phone and calls Dr. Ihsan. He tells him about the field trip, and his reluctance to let Oyku go. "Did I do the right thing?" he asks the doctor. Dr. Ihsan replies that if Oyku is feeling weak or tired, she shouldn't go. Demir tells him that, on the contrary, Oyku seems great. Dr. Ihsan tells him that if she has energy, the trip shouldn't be a problem.
Ugur comes by the restaurant. He sees Demir looking glum and asks what's wrong. Demir tells him, "The doctor says Oyku can go on the class trip tomorrow, but I can't take the day off." Of course, Ugur suggests that he can replace Demir. The only problem will be convincing the boss. Demir and Ugur go to see the boss. Demir asks to be off tomorrow. Who will cover for you, asks the boss. Ugur stands there smiling. "Never!" says the boss. "Do it for Oyku," pleads Demir. "Just one day." The boss reluctantly agrees. Demir tells Ugur to leave at once, before something bad happens. Ugur leaves.
In the evening, Oyku asks Candan whether she can stay up a little later than usual, since she won't be going to school or on the field trip. Candan agrees, but just a half hour. Demir returns home. Oyku ignores him. Demir turns to Candan. "Would you ask the young lady why she is up so late when she is going on the class trip?" Oyku starts explaining defensively, but she suddenly realizes what Demir has said. She jumps up, runs to Demir, and kisses and hugs him effusively. Not only is he giving his permission, he has also bought her new shoes and other new clothes for the trip. She is ecstatic. She gets ready for bed, and Demir comes in to read to her.
Once Oyku is asleep, Demir comes out of her room and apologizes for being so unpleasant the night before. He tells her she was right about calling the doctor. Candan tells him she knows it's hard to figure out what the right thing to do is.
In the morning, Oyku is up and ready to go. She has already packed what she needs for the trip. At the last minute, she realizes that she forgot to pack her book. Demir doesn't think she'll need it, but she goes to get it anyway.
Buses bring all the students and accompanying parents to the site of the trip. They get on line to check in. Mercan greets Oyku, much to Demir's displeasure. (I confess I tired of Demir's jealousy of Mercan weeks ago.) He asks Oyku, "Are you here to be with me or with Mercan?" Oyku tells him that Mercan is her best friend. Demir says, "Well, I'm your father, and that counts for more." (Someone should tell Demir that he doesn't have to be a 9-year-old to come on the class trip, so he should stop acting like one.)
Demir also butts heads with Ayla on line. He claims that she was trying to push ahead of him. He wins that round and registers before she does. Demir and Oyku go to their room. Oyku is delighted with the beds. Demir continues his jealousy of Mercan. FF>>
Ugur is waiting tables in Demir's stead. To my surprise, he takes the orders correctly, doesn't drop anything, and seems almost normal. The boss is pleased. "You've finally grown up," he tells Ugur. Ugur hopes that perhaps he can work along with Demir. His good mood comes crashing down, however, when he sees Cemal enter the restaurant and sit at a table. Even the boss sees the concerned look on Ugur's face. Ugur goes over to Cemal. "You're the last thing I need now," he tells him. Cemal replies, "May I see the menu, please? Now!"
All the students are given maps to help them find items. Oyku runs off to start her search. Demir is nervous. Sevgi urges him to let her have a little fun and tells him not to worry. Oyku is clearly enjoying herself. She seems spellbound as she looks at a flower through a magnifying glass. Demir seems to be trying to get Mercan to keep his distance.
Cemal tells Ugur he wants some black coffee. Before long, they're again arguing over Ugur's supposed role in Demir's father's death. "Only God and I know what happened," he tells Cemal. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I'm innocent, even though I can't prove it." Cemal insists, "You're not innocent. I can prove that you killed Demir's father." Ugur denies it, and claims that Demir wouldn't believe Cemal even if he tells him."I've already told him," says Cemal. "Keep the change," he says, as he gets up and leaves.
Demir and Oyku are in their room, getting ready for dinner. Oyku has changed her clothes. She comes out of the bathroom wearing a new pink shirt. Demir asks where she got the shirt. Mercan gave it to me. Take it off, it doesn't fit. Yes it does. And take off those hair clips. She wants to wear them. He tells her to choose between the shirt and the clips. She takes off the hair clips. Demir is disappointed. He thought she'd choose to keep the clips rather than the shirt. He asks her why she didn't wear the blue shirt he bought for her. She tells him she didn't even bring it on the trip.
Demir and Oyku enter the large dining room. Demir tells her there are no tables left because she took so long. Mercan calls to her to come join them. Demir insists they'll eat in their room. Oyku says no, we'll eat here and goes over to where Mercan is seated. FF>>
Ugur is sitting by himself at a cafe table drinking one drink after another. An older man who knows him comes over and asks why he's drinking so fast. Ugur replies, "You're not my father, leave me alone." "Tell me what's wrong," urges the man, whose name is Ismet. "I don't know where to begin," says Ugur.
Ugur tells Ismet he reminds him of Demir's daughter. (???) But we don't get any more information. All we get is a lot of self-loathing on Ugur's part. Statements like "Take me to a garbage dump and leave me there." "What kind of man am I? Am I a good person? No, I'm not. I don't deserve to be my mother's son or Demir's friend. I'm trash. Throw me into the sea." For a moment, it seems as if Ugur may tell the man more. "It's hard to keep a secret," Ugur says. "It eats you up inside." I wait for more, but all Ugur says is "I have a life but I can't have it. Whenever I'm happy, something tells me I don't deserve it." Ugur might have been about to say more, but someone signals to Ismet, and Ismet tells Ugur he has to leave. "No problem," says Ugur. "I'll be here until tomorrow unless someone throws me into the ocean."
Mercan asks Oyku whether she'll be his partner tomorrow. She replies Yes. Demir replies No. FF>>
Ayla is sitting at the same table as Oyku, Demir, Mercan, Betul, and Sevgi. Suddenly Ayla asks Demir, "How could you bring Oyku on this trip?" Demir gives her a puzzled look and asks why she says this. "Because she's sick," replies Ayla. Demir stares at her. If looks could kill, Ayla would be dead. Of course, Oyku overhears Ayla, and says, "Señora Ayla, I'm not sick."
A bunch of young guys in their teens are sitting outside around a makeshift fire. They talk about how hungry they are and try to keep warm. Cemal drives up, The guys know him, greet him warmly, and admire his car. He takes his backpack from the car. He has brought sandwiches and invites them all to take what they'd like. They're very happy and grateful. "You're the best guy in the world," they tell him. "Why do you bother with us?" Cemal tells him that when he was their age, he was a vagabond. "Can I be like you?" one of the guys asks. "You don't want that," Cemal replies. "Take care of each other. If you stick together, when you reach my age, nothing will be able to stop you." He prepares to leave. Someone observes, "You always leave halfway through the conversation. You don't want to tell us your secrets." Cemal calls one boy over to him, asks whether he needs anything, and tells him to let him know if he does.
After dinner, Demir and Oyku return to their room. He tells her he's going to use the bathroom, and she shouldn't turn on the TV. Of course, the minute he's out of sight, she turns on the TV. Back at his place, Cemal too is watching TV. To Oyku's surprise, and his, there is Dr. Ihsan, talking about Niemann-Pick, what kind of terrible disease it is, and how the hospital is currently treating one of the unfortunate people who has the disease. There still is no cure. And there on the TV is Oyku, talking about her very good experience in the hospital. Then Dr. Ihsan says that one of the characteristics of the disease is that before a patient turns 18... At this point, Demir manages to turn off the TV. Oyku asks him, am I cured? Demir tells her yes, she's cured, she's fine. However, Oyku isn't buying this. "I'm not cured, I'm still sick. And I don't have the flu. Why did you lie to me? Tell me...why?" Demir asks, "Why would I lie to you?" A devastated Oyku continues with her newfound understanding: "The reason they wanted to interview me was because of my illness. I want to go home." Demir protests that it's late, but Oyku insists: she wants to go home. And on this grim note, the episode ends.
Wonderful recap with Juanita! Thank you so much.
“(Someone should tell Demir that he doesn't have to be a 9-year-old to come on the class trip, so he should stop acting like one.)” That was absolutely spot on, Juanita! The continuing Mercan jealousy stuff bothers me big time. Can't blame you for the "FF>>"--I may have to adopt that, too. Demir is outright mean to the kid, even when his mother is around. Mercan and Betul have been loyal supporters of Oyku from the beginning; they don’t deserve this.
They sure are making it seem like Ugur is the killer. I expected him to go after Faik’s brother, not drink himself into a stupor. Like Rgv Chick, I can’t believe they would break up BFFs Demir and Ugur. I’ll hold out hope for another big revelation and vindication for Ugur.
Cemal’s redemption is underway and it looks like he is going to work his way back into Demir’s good graces.
Demir shut that TV off in the nick of time. I didn’t want to hear the rest of that sentence.
I’m not looking forward to it, but I’ll do the recap tonight.
dondi356
Juanita, "I simply need a comment template that begins, "Well, dondi356, you've done it again! Another magnificent recap!" I think every comment I make seems to start with some variant of this. I've run out of adjectives to describe how amazing your recaps are." I need one of those too...and I can use it for your recaps too as they are just as amazing and detail packed! Thank you Juanita and a belated thank you to Dondi for the stellar recaps!
Novelera, "I also picked up on Faik's not actually having seen Ugur shoot Demir's father. But it's beginning to look like they're going with Ugur being his usual inept self and the gun somehow going off." Thanks for stating what I was thinking, less work for me :-) It does seem that Ugur may have shot Demir's father. Here's hoping tha the gave back the gun prior to the shooting.
I too was on the edge of my seat the first time Oyku watched TV and I too guessed that the interview would be un early. Can't agree more that MuRAT has become a more vicious rat...hateful, just plain hateful.
The field trip was nice to watch, but what a horrible way for it to end for Oyku. I'm wondering if she will take Demir's lying harder than she will knowing that she is still suffering from that illness. She seemed to take it head-on the first time she found out about it; I hope she finds that inner strength once more.
That scene with Cemal giving the young men sandwiches seemed to come out of nowhere. I guess it's the writer's way to show that Cemal is being redeemed in every way.
Many thanks, dondi356 and Rgv Chick, for your appreciative and insightful comments.
dondi356, I agree completely with what you say about Demir's absurd jealousy of Mercan. As you note, Mercan and his mother have been loyal supporters from the start, and they do not deserve Demir's ugly and baseless treatment.
And yes, Demir turned off the TV just in time. Well, not really just in time, but just in time to prevent Oyku's hearing even more horrific revelations.
Thanks very much for agreeing to do tonight's recap in spite of the grief it's likely to depict.
Rgv Chick, yes, it's beginning to look as if Ugur may indeed have been holding the gun when it went off, but that's a lot different from "murder." And in fact, Cemal seems aware of that distinction when he tells Demir that "the person who killed your father" and then changes the way he phrases this to "the person who shot him" was Ugur. Cemal wants to hurt Demir by telling him this, so he does make it seem as if Ugur purposefully shot Demir's father, but I think he changes the wording because he's aware that while Ugur may somehow have made the gun go off, he did not intend to kill or even hurt Demir's father. Perhaps I'm way off base here, but I keep being struck by Cemal's change of wording. I think your statement about Ugur's "inept self" causing the gun to go off may turn out to be what happened.
What's still completely unclear is how the novela will end. Are we really going to be subjected to Oyku's death, or a brave Oyku putting on a good face in spite of her inevitable death, or any number of other dreadful conclusions? If so, I don't think I'll ever risk watching another Turkish novela. There's enough real misery in the world without my having to confront it in a novela as well. So in spite of N-P being a real illness that is as yet uncurable, I'm hoping for Telenovela Medicine to work its miracles.
I did a search for “Niemann Pick bone marrow transplant”. Lots of med jargon but found this:
“Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for Niemann-Pick disease is considered experimental, investigational, and unproven.” This was from about 10 years ago.
It looked as if there was slight improvement for some patients depending on the type and with early treatment. Could the writers be going for some sort of miracle remission? At least we could have somewhat of a happy ending.
dondi356
Thanks so much, Juanita. Your descriptions and dialog were perfect!!
Not sure what will happen tonight. I'm wishing for Candan to go after Mu-RAT and berate him like the weasel he is. That would have more effect than Demir's doing so. At least, having declared on national television that they are treating Oyku, the offer cannot be withdrawn.
Let me join the chorus of disagreement with Demir's behavior toward Mercan. Part of loving a child is watching them grow and appreciating their childhood friends. I was always delighted with my son's having friends for sleepovers.
Yep, Cemal is well on his way to redemption. What I wondered was whether this charitable side of him only came up after he discovered that Demir had no part in his being sent to prison.
I hope no harm comes to Ugur from his borrachera. He'd be easy pickings for some robbers (not that he has much to steal these days).
I kept expecting it and expecting it. And, when several television instances went by I started to doubt my instinct that Mu-RAT would break his promise. The next episode is bound to be a very sad one.
Thanks very much, novelera. Your comments mean a lot to me.
I like your idea of Candan berating Mu-RAT. As you say, her criticism would bother him much more than Demir's would.
Thanks for the word borrachera. I'm not sure why I hadn't come upon it before.
I could be wrong, but I had the feeling that the boys had known Cemal and his generosity for a while, which would mean he'd started caring about them before he discovered that Demir hadn't betrayed him. In any event, it was good to see this side of him.
Clearly, your instinct about Mu-RAT was spot on.
Yes, tonight's episode is likely to be very sad. And then we'll have to wait until next week to get any relief, if there's any relief to be had. :-(
dondi356, I just saw your message about N-P bone marrow transplants. I'm glad to know that there's some basis for the direction this novela is taking. I guess what I'd really like is for the novela to let Telenovela Medicine work on this small ray of hope, turning it into an unprecedented cure.
Demir and Oyku arrive home. She goes right into her room and closes the door on Demir, who is begging her to wait and listen to him. Candan comes out of the bedroom and asks, what happened? Why are you back? Oyku knows that she’s still sick, Demir says, and she also knows I’ve been lying to her this whole time! What? Candan doesn’t understand.
Demir tells her that Oyku found out from TV. She saw the interview that was supposed to air after the transplant. Demir tells Candan, your friend Mu-RAT promised me and gave me his hand! Oyku should never have seen that! This wasn’t the deal. Demir just knew something like this would happen. Candan is speechless.
Demir continues, I ruined everything. I just wanted my daughter to have nice memories and spend time with her friends and be happy. But I ruined it. Candan says that Demir shouldn’t blame himself and that they can talk to Oyku. Demir asks her how can we do that? We’ve done nothing but lie to her. Candan tries to comfort him.
Ihsan shows up at Mu-rat’s house. (good for you, Ihsan.) Mu-RAT is surprised to see Ihsan; he says what brings you here? (as if he doesn’t know) Ihsan doesn’t understand what Mu-RAT is doing. He says, how could you let them air the interview? Mu-RAT gets defensive (as if he could ever defend this decision) and asks Ihsan, did you come here to question my judgment? Exactamente, says Ihsan. He can’t understand. Oyku’s situation is delicate, he says. How could you do something like this? Ihsan continues, I warned you about this. I said it was a bad idea. Have you considered how Oyku would feel if she learned of her illness through TV?
Enough, Ihsan, orders Mu-RAT, I’m the hospital director. I have a right to advertise the hospital if I’m covering the costs. I gave permission to push up the interview and I don’t owe you an explanation. Ihsan reminds The Rat that he (Mur-RAT) is a doctor, and the patients should always come first. Yes, Mu-RAT responds, I am a doctor, but I am also a business man. But he has never ignored a patient’s needs. Oyku has received the best care and he’s advertising the hospital. Mu-RAT thinks this is a win-win situation.
Ihsan accuses Mu-RAT of forgetting what it means to be a doctor. Ihsan says he can’t work under these circumstances. Mu-RAT tells him, fine, do what you want. The hospital was at your disposal so you could continue your research but if you want to walk away, go ahead. Mu-RAT has the nerve to tell Ihsan that Oyku will be very upset if he leaves and Ihsan should consider that, too. He finishes by saying, if that’s all, I’m going to bed (how can this bastard sleep at night?) Ihsan walks away, angry.
The class is on the bus ride back home. Betul asks Sevgi if she has heard from Demir and does she know why they left early. Sevgi tells her Oyku wasn’t feeling well. Betul is sorry to hear it. Ayla overhears and feels compelled to say, poor girl; I told you she was sick. She shouldn’t have left home. Mercan is listening. Sevgi asks Ayla to watch what she says because the kids are around.
This does not stop Ayla and she continues, even if we are careful, this girl is suffering. They exposed her to TV cameras. How shameful! What are they trying to do with that girl? Betul has heard enough and says to Ayla, how can you be so cruel? (it seems to come naturally) Ayla doesn’t think she’s saying anything bad. She’s only saying it for Oyku’s good. And don’t call me cruel in front of my daughter, check yourself, Betul!
dondi356
Betul does not take this from Ayla. Let me tell you something, she says to Ayla. You have the right to say what you want, but you should keep the other children in mind. Sevgi asks them to calm down for the sake of the children. And still Ayla runs her mouth saying, she’s (Betul) crazy. I only spoke up because I care, but everything is my fault. (boo fricken hoo, Ayla) You don’t know anything about empathy, Ayla says. Betul exclaims, this woman never shuts up! Ayla tells Betul she should shut up. Quiet! I noticed that Ilayda gave a startled look here.
Oyku is awake in bed. She hears a knock at the door and pretends to be asleep as Candan enters. Candan wants her to get up for breakfast. Oyku doesn’t want to get up; she’s not hungry. She turns away from Candan. Candan relents and says, if you want to keep sleeping, ok. Candan leaves but we see Oyku’s not really sleepy; she just wants to be alone.
Candan tells Demir Oyku is not coming out. Demir knows Oyku is mad at him and for good reason. Candan says they should go see Ihsan. Demir’s phone rings. It’s Cemal. He asks Demir to come meet him at the field. Demir says he can’t. Cemal says, come so I can prove to you that Ugur killed your father.
Candan texts The Rat, can we meet now? He answers her right away, sure, where? Candan calls Mufide to come watch Oyku.
Candan and Mu-RAT meet at an outdoor restaurant. He asks her what’s going on? He was worried when he got her message. Are you ok? Unfortunately, not, she starts. I can’t believe you, Mu-RAT. This is the lowest thing you have ever done. You manage to keep disappointing me. Don’t you get tired of it? Mu-RAT trying to play innocent, claims he doesn’t understand. You promised the interview wouldn’t air before the transplant, Candan says. Why didn’t you keep your word?
Mu-RAT says she has every right to be angry and he feels terrible (?!?). He swears he spoke to the reporters and they agreed to air it later. (waiting for lightning to strike this creep) He had no idea they would do this without telling him. (where’s that lightning bolt?) Candan doesn’t care if he feels bad or guilty (he doesn’t Candan) because Oyku found out from the TV. Do you have any idea how she feels? Mu-RAT pretends to be contrite, Candan, I already told you I’m sorry.
She can’t understand why he has disappointed her so many times. She tells him she doesn’t trust him anymore. Mu-RAT assures her she can trust him. (we need a shovel for this BS) He puts his hand on hers and says, you know I’d never do anything to upset you. Candan pulls her hand away and tells him, you already have. You know how much I love Oyku. You know how desperate I am. I am begging you not to drag Oyku down because of me. She will ask him only once, there will be no second time, do you promise to keep your word? He tells her of course he will. She will believe him this one last time because she has no other choice. With that, she gets up and walks away. Mu-RAT says to nobody, the feeling is mutual, Candan. You don’t leave me with options either.
We see Cemal at the field with another guy. Demir walks up. What’s going on and who is this guy? He’s Ahmed, Faik’s older brother. Ahmed is sitting on a bench all bloodied. Cemal says, he was Ugur’s best friend. They worked together. So? Ahmed has something to tell you, Demir.
Cemal gives Ahmed permission to talk. Ahmed stays quiet. Cemal yells at him, haven’t I beaten you enough? Where were you the night Demir’s father was killed? Ahmed answers he was there. And who else? Seki and Ugur. Cemal looks for Demir’s reaction. Demir’s listening. Cemal asks Ahmed to continue. When we broke in, the guard saw us. We had to kill him to save ourselves. And who pulled the trigger, asks Cemal. Ahmed looks at Demir and says... Ugur.
dondi356
Cemal asks Demir, now do you believe me? No, I don’t believe it, says Demir. Ok says, Cemal. let’s see what else Ahmed knows. Ahmed, where was he shot? In the head, he responds. Ugur, your best friend, did that to your father. Demir insists that Ugur would never do something like that. He’s like my brother, the only person I trust. He has saved me so many times and risked his life. Cemal asks Demir to think about it. Why would Ugur do that? Maybe he feels guilty. You heard Ahmed! What more to do you want?
Demir still doesn’t believe it. He doesn’t know what Cemal is planning, but it won’t work. He will never believe it because he trusts Ugur. Cemal asks Demir to think again. Ugur came into your life after your father died and he has taken care of you since then. What are you waiting for? Demir believes in Ugur. Cemal is frustrated. He tells Demir he should ask Ugur one question: what was he doing in the warehouse that night? You will know if he’s lying. That’s right, Demir says, and walks away. Cemal yells after him, you know I’m right. You don’t want to accept it.
Candan enters Oyku’s bedroom. You’ve rested enough, now get up. Oyku doesn’t want to. Ok, then, Candan will get in bed with her. Candan thinks they should stay in bed all day. No, Oyku says, she will have to get up to do her homework soon. Oyku smiles she says this was all a trick on Candan’s part. They laugh. Candan tells Oyku she is very hungry. Let’s get up and eat. She’s alone because Demir left for work. She tempts Oyku with TV. You would think she’d never want to watch TV again but since Demir isn’t there, Oyku says ok, let’s do it.
Demir is calling Ugur but he doesn’t answer. We see Ugur sleeping it off.
Cemal drops Ahmed off. Ahmed says he did what Cemal wanted and told Demir everything. So? Ahmed wants to be sure that Cemal won’t turn him in. Cemal says he wouldn’t do that. Ahmed continues, if you plan to turn me in just to convince Demir, if you make the police reopen that case and investigate that robbery…. Cemal says that’s his decision. He asks Ahmed, if Ugur is the one who shot, why are you scared? (Hmm…good question) Ahmed is not scared but he doesn’t know who the police would believe. He doesn’t want to go to jail just so Demir will believe. We are talking murder. Cemal yells at him to get out.
Demir shows up at work. Kemal asks why he is there. There was a problem and they had to return from the trip. Demir asks for Ugur. Kemal says he didn’t show up so he called his nephew to fill in. Kemal tells Demir to go and come back tomorrow. Demir apologizes and leaves.
Ugur wakes up to a pounding at his front door. It’s Demir. Ugur is surprised to see him, what about the trip? Demir asks why he didn’t go to the restaurant. Ugur overslept. Demir is annoyed. He’s worried he could get fired. Demir asks where Ugur was last night; he reeks of alcohol. Demir asks for Mufide and Ugur says she’s at a neighbor for a few days. Demir tells Ugur to go wash up, they have to talk. Ugur thinks back to Cemal saying he told Demir that Ugur killed his father. Ugur asks what do they have to talk about? Demir just says get dressed and let’s go.
Demir has told Ugur about Oyku finding out from the TV interview. What are we going to do now, Ugur asks. Demir doesn’t know. Ugur says, what if you tell her the truth? Explain that you lied to protect her.
Demir looks right at Ugur and asks him, did you do the same thing? To whom, asks Ugur? To me, answers Demir. Ugur doesn’t know what Demir is getting at. Ugur… Cemal told me something. Were you the one who shot my father? Ugur can’t even look at Demir. Demir looks closely at Ugur and asks, did you do it? Tell me you didn’t. Ugur? Ugur looks at Demir and says, it wasn’t me. Demir lets out a sigh.
dondi356
What do I have to say to get you to believe me, Demir? How could you ask me that? Demir wants to know where Ugur met his dad. At the funeral you said you knew him from the neighborhood. Yes, that’s right. Demir says his father had recently moved there. When did you have the chance to meet him? Ugur wants to know Demir’s point. Demir wants the truth; he raises his voice, say something! Tell me the truth! What do you want me to say? Demir asks, the night my father was killed…were you there? Demir can tell the answer just by the look on Ugur’s face and turns away.
Ugur pleads with Demir to listen. It’s true. I was the lookout that night, but I didn’t kill your father. It was Ahmed! Ahmed shot him, and he says it was me! You know me. What makes you think I would kill someone? I don’t even know how to use a gun. Cemal and Ahmed are framing me!
Demir wants to know how Ugur could keep this from him all these years. How could he hide this? Ugur says he couldn’t tell something like that to Demir’s face. He didn’t have the strength to do it. Demir asks why he didn’t report it to the police. Why didn’t you let them arrest Ahmed? Ugur says he is a thief. They would have made me pay if I turned them in. He had no choice. He was just a kid. He feared for his life.
Really, asks Demir. Because of your fear, that bastard Ahmed has been unpunished for years. Demir says, not anymore. I’ll make sure he pays for everything. Ugur asks Demir to wait. Demir tells Ugur to stay out of his life; he never wants to see him again. Never. It’s over. Demir walks away.
Ugur has a flashback to the robbery. He goes over to Demir’s dad, lying dead on the floor and he is clearly very affected by it. Ahmed yells at him, get over here! We hear sirens and they have to take off. Ugur is still standing over Demir’s dad. We see a gun in his hand. (I still hope Ugur did not do it)
Oyku wants to know why people lie. Candan tells her there are different reasons. Then why does my dad lie to me all the time? He promises he won’t, but then he does. Candan explains that her dad is trying to protect her. Oyku says he’s breaking her heart! But it’s for your own good, says Candan. Oyku doesn’t understand. It is kind of hard to understand, Candan admits. What is important is that all your father does is for you.
Candan wants to go to kitchen and cook together. But first Oyku has a question. She knows there is no cure for her. She asks, what will happen to me? Candan wants to know who said that. It’s what Oyku heard on the TV. Candan tells Oyku she is going to get better. She’s not kidding. She believes it. You’re going to get better, ok? Don’t care what they say on TV. Oyku hugs Candan.
Ugur arrives home. He talks to Mufide on the phone. He gets a call from Sevgi. Looks like he’s not sure if he should answer but he does. She called because she was worried. He hasn’t called her since yesterday and she wondered if everything was ok. Yes, he’s just tired from work. Sevgi asks him to get coffee after school tomorrow. Sure. Sevgi thinks something is wrong because Ugur sounds strange. No, he’s just tired.
After he hangs up Ugur says, nothing is ok, nothing. God, please help me. Ugur thinks of something and dials the phone. He asks the person on the other end where he can find Ahmed.
Sevgi is in her room and she’s making dreamy faces. I guess she’s thinking of Ugur. Her dad knocks and asks to come in. You were talking on the phone, he says. She denies it but he overheard. You were talking to that conman, Ugur, right? Sevgi doesn’t like him saying that. Huseyin wonders why Sevgi doesn’t listen when he tells her to stay away from Ugur.
dondi356
He asks Sevgi, what did that idiot do to make you like him? He’s telling her this for her own good. Then he tells her, it’s not easy to love a son in law like Ugur. What? Son in law? Huseyin says it looks like he has no choice. He suspects that she meets him secretly, which she denies.
Here is what we will do, he tells Sevgi. Tell Ugur to find an honest job and then tell him to come here and ask me what I think. Are you serious, asks Sevgi. Of course, he says with a smile. Huseyin would rather have Ugur in front of him than behind his back. Sevgi hugs her dad and tells him she loves him. He gets up and tells Sevgi it’s late, go to sleep. She tells him she’s not a little girl anymore. He tells her, you’ll always be my little girl no matter how old you are. (aww) Outside Sevgi’s room Huseyin says to himself, Ugur you better behave, or I’ll make you pay. (Gulp!)
Ugur goes to the tea house, finds Ahmed and sits down. I was wondering when you would show up, says Ahmed.
Demir comes home. It’s dinnertime. Oyku gets up from the table and says she’s not hungry. She’s going to go to sleep. She communicates with Demir through Candan. Tell my dad I don’t want to eat. I just want to sleep. Demir wants her to come back and eat. We get a battle of wills. Oyku doesn’t want to be in the same place as liars. She goes to her room and slams the door.
Demir’s not having it. He goes to her room and yells at her, don’t slam the door like that! Please, he says to her calmly, let’s eat together. She doesn’t answer. He leaves the room and then goes back. He picks her up and carries her back to the table while she screams, let me go! Another battle ensues. Oyku refuses to eat and Demir insists she does. Why do I have to eat, she asks? Because I’m sick?
And we are out.
dondi356
Yes, dondi356, I didn't think it was possible, but you've outdone yourself (again!). What really makes this recap special are all your wonderful asides. I don't want to admit it, but I especially enjoyed "(boo fricken hoo, Ayla)". :-)
I hope the truth about the shooting does finally exonerate Ugur, but his standing there with the gun in his hand doesn't look good. Did it go off accidentally? Did he struggle with Ahmed and the gun went off in the struggle? It surely can't be the case that Ugur wanted to kill the guard. Or can it? I was impressed at how strongly Demir at first resisted believing that Ugur was to blame. At first.
I'm somewhat puzzled by Cemal's being so intent on proving to Demir that Ugur killed his father. Is it because Ugur knew Asu's plan to do in Cemal? Is Cemal perhaps jealous that Ugur supplanted him as Demir's best friend? That doesn't seem his motive, but he is certainly hurting not just Ugur but also Demir.
I'm glad that both Dr. Ihsan and Candan expressed their outrage to Mu-RAT. But apparently the RAT isn't going to take their disapproval lying down (or standing up).
And will Telenovela Medicine cure Oyku?
Questions, questions, and more questions. I guess we'll have to wait until next week, or the week after, or perhaps even the gran final, for all the answers.
Oh well, many thanks once again, dondi356! And ¡Felices Fiestas! to all.
Fantastic recap, dondi. Your asides during the Candan/Mu-RAT scene were SO appropriate. Candan is just too darn nice. I fantasized myself at that coffee place. Oh how I would have ripped into him. And the lie that the TV people did it against his instructions! I haven't watched enough Turkish novelas to get a sense of whether creeps get justice or not. If this were the US, Demir could sue the pants off him...just because.
I'm anxious to see what's going to happen with Ugur. They surely have dropped enough clues showing him with a gun in hand. But the fact that he seeks out Ahmed surely gives us some hope. And the fact that Cemal had to beat the crap out of Ahmed to get him to say what he did makes it seem like he'd have said anything to stop the beating.
OK, time to wrap some Christmas presents. As I said to one of my favorite tellers at the bank on Monday, Merry Everything!
