We get a slight rewind. Demir tells Ahmed they will exchange Faik for the girls. No money will be involved. Ahmed answers, no. What? Ahmed repeats, I said no. I don’t accept. Demir threatens to kill Faik. Do it, Ahmed responds. A frightened Faik jumps in, what are you saying brother? Ahmed tells Demir his brother has only caused him problems. Kill him; you and I will be rid of him. What kind of man are you, asks Demir? Have you no compassion? Ahmed says let’s get back to the deal, 100 million…the clock is ticking. And he hangs up.
So what will our guys do now? They sit and think. Demir says, just what we needed. They have to worry about Faik now. Ugur comments that Ahmed is so blinded with rage he turned on his own brother. Faik laments, just kill me now. My own brother sold me out. Just get rid of me. It’s the best for everybody. Cemal says, why would we? Do we look like murderers? Ugur thinks it wouldn’t do any good to kill him either. Cemal says they can’t leave Faik because he can’t be trusted. Faik has a proposition, if you don’t kill me, I’ll do whatever you say. I’ll get the revenge so you don’t have to. Ugur yells at him not to lecture them about revenge. Demir says now they have to depend on Mu-Rat’s money.
Next morning, they get a call from Resat: bring the money in one hour to the address I send. Remember to keep the police out of this. Demir asks, how do I know you won’t kill me and take the money? Resat says to let Faik bring the money, there is no need for Demir to take risks. That is, if Faik is still alive. Resat hangs up.
Demir asks Ugur to call Huseyin and tell him they are on the way.
We see Demir being fitted with a wire and earpiece. Mu-Rat is there, too. The cops will be able to hear Demir and Demir will be able to hear them. A cop asks if the money is ready. The Rat pipes up, the money is taken care of. The cop appreciates this. Mu-Rat interrupts him, the money is not important; it’s Candan’s life. Demir shoots him a look. And then Mu-Rat adds, and everyone else’s, too.
The cop continues, we have everything we need. We will use everything at our disposal to save the hostages. This is a delicate operation. There are three hostages. He warns Demir and Mu-Rat not to play hero. Just follow instructions. Demir asks the cop, when will you take action? The cop says when they are sure the hostages are safe.
Oyku tells Candan she needs to use the bathroom she can’t hold it any longer. Candan calls the guard and he takes her to the bathroom. Candan is not allowed to go with her.
Sevgi asks Candan, how much longer? Candan figures that Huseyin and Demir are doing their best to find them. Sevgi begins to have another panic attack and Candan tries to calm her.
The guys + Faik are heading to the exchange. Cemal is driving and Ugur is navigating. It will be over soon, says Cemal. Ojala, answers Demir. Faik is looking a bit nervous, too, and he tells Cemal, you don’t know that. These situations are my brother’s specialty. We have to be careful if we are to catch him. Ugur says, you’ll see; there will be no escape for Ahmed.
Oyku returns and Resat comes in. Can I get you ladies anything, he asks? Candan wants to know how much longer he will keep them. Not much longer, answers Resat, I am expecting a phone call and then we’ll see after that.
The guys arrive at the agreed place. Cemal wonders why no one is there. Demir tells Faik to get out of the car with him. He tells Cemal and Ugur to wait in the car. Cemal says, we agreed no one acts alone. They want to go with him. Demir says, no, they would expect that. So Demir and Faik get out and start walking. Cemal and Ugur stay behind. The police let Demir know they are in position and ready.
dondi356
As they approach the exchange place, Demir says he sees no one. He asks Faik, where is your brother? Faik has no idea. Demir grabs Faik, listen idiot, get this straight, I swear to you that your bastard of a brother and this Resat will pay after I recover my daughter! Faik says Demir is right to feel this way. His brother is shameless and sold him out. Faik claims he’s not like his brother; he doesn’t kidnap women and children. He’s a victim too. Demir shouts, enough! You will pay too when this ends. Why, asks Faik, I’m a victim, too. Demir tells Faik he will get his revenge. Your brother will pay for killing my father and hurting my daughter.
Demir gets the call from Resat. Demir asks, where are you, you bastard? Come out so we can end this. Resat wants to know if Demir has the money. Yes, he does. Good, says Resat, give the money to Faik and he will bring it to me. Demir asks, how can I be sure you will release the girls. Demir will have to trust Resat on that. Demir demands to see Oyku first. He needs to know if she is ok before giving the money to Faik.
Resat calls him back and shows him the three hostages. Oyku tells her dad they’re ok. When are you coming, she asks? I’ll be there soon, says Demir, don’t be scared. He asks Candan if she’s ok, too. Candan says she and Sevgi are ok. He tells her he will be there soon. Enough, says Resat, have Faik bring the money. Demir says he will but let me watch the girls until Faik gets there. Fine, Demir, you are a good father, says Resat.
Demir gives the money to Faik. Oyku tells her dad to come quick, she really misses him. Demir promises everything will be fine. Faik is almost at the address. The video call suddenly ends. Demir runs down the street to where Faik turned in and sees no one. The cop gives the order; surround the building, the hostages could be in there! We see Cemal and Ugur running to meet Demir. The three split up to look around.
We see Faik throw the money over a fence and climb over. We see a guy on a moto, waiting. Faik, with the money, hop on the back and they drive away.
Demir is searching the grounds of the house where the girls are supposedly being kept. The police follow in. They search everywhere but no one is there.
Demir gets another call from Resat. Demir demands, where is my daughter? Resat says, didn’t I tell you to leave the police out of this? It’s a good thing I didn’t trust you. I would have lost the money and been captured. Resat expected more from Demir. He says, I’m disappointed you took the bait too easily. Fatherhood has made you weak. Demir tries to threaten Resat saying, if you touch one hair on my daughter’s head…. Resat interrupts, don’t worry, my problem is with you Demir, not her. He tells Demir now that we covered the damages, let me get to the point.
Demir yells, what else do you want? Resat says, if you tell the police what I’m about to tell you, I’ll kill your daughter and the others, too. This is your last chance. Don’t blow it. I will return your loved ones on one condition: your life in exchange for you daughter’s. What do you say? Think about it. You have until tomorrow. Do you care more about your life or your daughter’s? Resat hangs up.
Demir is in shock. Ugur asks Demir what happened. Demir is slow to answer, he says Resat will let them go on one condition. What is that? Demir is slow to answer again. Then he says softly, Resat will let me know tomorrow.
The guys drive home. Cemal and Ugur are very upset and discuss what happened: Ahmed escaped, they didn’t get Resat, Faik fooled them. Demir stays silent in the backseat, looking out the window.
dondi356
Faik arrives with the money and gets an appreciative welcome from Ahmed. Faik was scared but got the job done. We see in a flashback this was Resat’s plan all along. Resat didn’t trust Demir so Faik was sent as bait. Ahmed was to refuse the exchange for Faik and Faik would pretend to change sides. Faik would earn Demir’s trust and deliver the money. The girls would not be released. Resat would ask for something else first, Demir’s life.
Demir goes to see Huseyin. Demir is very sorry for what has happened. Being sorry won’t help now, says Huseyin, my poor daughter. Feeling sorry won’t get her out of there. Huseyin continues, I knew you wouldn’t follow the right path. I never expected it. But you could at least have had the decency not to hurt innocent people. I don’t know how many times I told Ugur to leave my daughter alone. Neither he nor my daughter listened to me.
Demir tells Huseyin they did try. But no matter what they did, they found themselves right back to where they started. Trouble always seemed to follow them. Demir says, nobody understands better than me. They kidnapped my daughter. Huseyin says he has never felt so helpless. All these years and this is the first time he’s been this desperate. Demir tells him from one father to another, I promise to save your daughter and mine, too.
Ugur and Cemal prepare tea in the kitchen while Demir sleeps on the couch. He dreams of the beach vacation he promised to Oyku. She shows him a picture she drew. It’s Demir, Candan, Oyku and Demir asks, who is this other person? It’s Mercan. He’s jealous. (Good grief. Even in his dreams?) Then he takes her on his shoulders and runs around with her. The sky gets dark and we hear Resat repeat his condition, your life for your daughter’s. There is thunder and lightning. Demir tells Oyku, don’t be afraid, I’m with you. The guys hear him talking in his sleep and wake him. Cemal says to go to the bedroom and get some sleep. They ask if he’s ok. Demir says he’s fine but we know otherwise.
Demir goes to the bedroom and sits in a chair. He takes out the picture of him and Oyku and puts it down on the small table in front of him. He takes out his phone and scrolls through pics of Oyku and him together. He sets the phone up on the table, wipes his eyes and gets ready to record a message. Oyku honey, he starts… We see him talking but we don’t hear what he says. He finishes, we are the warrior princess and the Iron Man. Good bye, honey, I love you so much. A tear falls…he kisses the picture. Goodbye my girl…
Next morning, we see Cemal sleeping on the couch. Ugur is in his bed and Demir is sitting wide awake across from him. He wakes Ugur. Ugur wakes with a start—did you hear something? What happened? No, says Demir, I want to talk to you about something. Ugur hopes it isn’t anything bad. Demir wants to talk about the past. About his father. Ugur starts apologizing all over again. Demir says calm down, he understands. He says what Ugur did wasn’t right, but he can understand. Demir tells him he probably would have done the same thing.
Demir says, Ugur, I never thought that you wanted to hurt me on purpose. I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. He hopes Ugur can understand that. Demir continues, I could never repay you. If you hadn’t come into my life, I would have been lost to the streets. I’d be dead and forgotten. Ugur tells him not to talk like this. I love you as if you are my real brother. I have always done what I could for you and always will. You can count on it. Demir knows. Ugur smiles and says, you forgive me, don’t you?
dondi356
Demir smiles back and says, of course, give me a hug. Demir asks Ugur, give me your blessing. (What Demir says is hakkini helal et. He’s asking for forgiveness if he has wronged Ugur, even unintentionally. This could be asked to patch a relationship or before a serious undertaking or as a final farewell) Of course, answers Ugur (helal olsun is his response). Ugur sees the look on Demir’s face and wants to know why he asked for the blessing. For no reason, Demir says and he leaves the room. Ugur follows him out.
Demir wakes Cemal. He has something to tell them both. Yesterday when Resat called, he told me something I couldn’t tell the police… he said he would kill the girls if I told the police. He will release the girls on one condition. Their lives in exchange for mine. Ugur says that’s ridiculous. This guy is a psycho. Cemal wants to know what Demir told Resat. Nothing yet, Demir says. Resat is going to call for the answer today.
Cemal hopes that Demir is not considering this. Demir feels there is no other way. The guys tell Demir this is a set up. Demir raises his voice, So what! I’m out of options! Ugur won’t permit it. Cemal says, you will get yourself killed. Demir can’t take this anymore. He tells his friends, I accused you so many times and said you were to blame. That’s not true, I’m to blame for everything! They will release Oyku, Candan and Sevgi. Let’s end this once and for all.
Someone’s at the door. It’s Mu-Rat! What’s going on, Demir asks him. Are you joking with me, Mu-Rat asks back? Cemal gets angry, don’t talk to him like that! Demir has to hold Cemal back. Demir tell his friends to calm down, he will speak with Mu-Rat outside and they should stay inside. Ugur tells Demir, our conversation is not over, understand? Fine, says Demir, I'll be back. By the look on his face, I don’t think he has intentions of going back in.
Demir asks Mu-Rat what he wants. Mu-Rat doesn’t care for Demir’s attitude and asks him to be respectful. Demir snaps back, why do you care about my attitude? Mu-Rat wants to know if there are any new developments. No, Demir is waiting for a call. Mu-Rat lights into him. I’m running out of patience. Candan is being held by those mafiosos and all you can do is sit here? What kind of man are you? Listen, if Candan gets hurt, I’ll ruin your life! Is that clear? You will be very sorry!
Demir tells Mu-Rat, you can’t make me feel worse than I already do. I can’t even breathe anymore, he shouts. He tells Mu-Rat, you’re right. I’m the worst thing that has happened to Candan. She doesn’t deserve any of this. She is the finest woman I’ve ever known. The kindest woman I have ever known. I’m aware this is my fault and that is why I’m putting a stop to this. I will save my child and my wife. With that, Demir walks away from Mu-Rat and the house.
Candan and Sevgi talk while Oyku sleeps. They talk about what happened yesterday. Sevgi says at least we know Demir is trying to find us. Half asleep Oyku asks, has my father come? He will be here soon, Candan answers. He may be a little late, but he will come. Hold on a little longer. Try to keep sleeping, she tells Oyku. Candan asks Sevgi to come to the other side of the room so Oyku won’t hear. Candan tells her, waiting won’t do us any good. She has a plan, but don’t tell Oyku. Stay here and take care of her. Sevgi hopes her plan isn’t dangerous. Candan feels they have no choice.
Candan calls the guard. She has to go to the bathroom. He takes her. She stops him from coming in and she quickly closes the door and locks it. The guard shouts and Candan shouts back she needs privacy. She turns on the water, opens the small window and squeezes out. She is careful not to be seen by the guards on the grounds. Candan runs through the yard and climbs over a wall on to the street. Run, Candan, Run!
And we are out.
dondi356
dondi356. I am ever so grateful for your outstanding recap. My DVR failed to record and I only got to see Candan RUN!! And thank you for the explanation of "the blessing." It's always interesting to learn of interpretations and customs used around the world.
No surprise that Faik was in on Ahmed's plan. I was hoping otherwise, but oh well, airtime has to be filled. Maybe Candan will reach Demir but I'm sure the goons are going to be plotting a new strategy and probably move Oyku and Sevgi to a new site.
What a terrific recap, dondi356! Many thanks! You captured all the twists and turns, including some I missed. And, like Rgv Chick, I very much appreciated your explaining the blessing Demir asked of Ugur.
I loved your aside about Demir's jealousy of Mercan. To be honest, having Demir be jealous of Mercan even in his sleep was so over the top that I enjoyed it.
I never trusted Faik. Perhaps if this had been the day before the gran final, I might have believed that Faik was sincerely switching sides, but not with two weeks to go.
I'll do tonight's recap.
Thanks, Rgv Chick and Juanita.
An emotional episode and it belonged to Demir. Demir speaking with Huseyin. Demir recording his message for Oyku. The talk with Ugur and asking for helal (unless I missed it, he didn’t ask Cemal). Demir speaking with The Rat.
I agree with you that Faik was not a surprise. Resat, Ahmed and especially Faik had to trust our guys were lacking the killer gene. I know Demir always threatens but then he always stops short.
Candan showed her mettle last night. Unfortunately, I can’t see her outrunning the bad guys. Isn’t she putting Oyku and Sevgi in danger by escaping? I hope I’m wrong on all counts.
They sure are making it look like Demir is going to a certain death as we near the end of the show. How can he escape his fate? Hoping the writers have a trick up their sleeves, they’ve been good at stringing us along here and there.
I have a feeling you will be recapping another emotional episode tonight, Juanita.
dondi356
Thanks so much, dondi. Another stellar recap that captured all the twists.
I always knew Faik was in on the plot. Before he went to that empty house we saw IIRC one of those scenes where a character's lips move but there is no sound as Ahmed outlined the plan to Faik. And, yes, they depended on Demir and the others not being capable of cold blooded murder.
I'm leaning toward Candan getting away. There has to be some way to save Demir. I am 99.9% sure he's not going to die. I was less positive about Oyku considering those of you who've watched Turkish novelas commented that sometimes main characters do die.
I loved Demir's complete reconciliation with Ugur. Of course, he did that because he believes he's going to die. And me three to you, dondi, for explaining the Turkish custom of apology.
Tonight should be very interesting!
Thanks, novelera. I think you are 99.9% right about Demir. They are making this a little too obvious. In any TN there can be cause for tragedy speculation but it's usually not this obvious when it happens. We shall see.
dondi356
We again see Candan climb out the small window in the bathroom, then climb over a wall, and RUNS. Meanwhile, the guard knocks on the bathroom door. Time's up. When he gets no answer, he goes in and finds her gone. ¡No puede ser! He starts yelling. Resat hears the commotion and comes out. What's happening? She escaped! Ahmed slaps the guard. Resat asks Ahmed "Why do I trust you? Where do you find all these good-for-nothings who work for you?"
Demir goes to see his boss, Kemal. Kemal is not pleased that Demir has not been at work. "This is unacceptable," he tells Demir. "I have to let you go." Demir tells him "They have my daughter. Can I ask one last favor? Will you lend me your car for one day?" Kemal gives him the keys.
Resat calls Demir. "Have you made your decision?" Demir says he's on his way. "It will be just me, no police. Just release the hostages." Demir calls Cemal and asks him to put him on speakerphone. Then he tells Cemal and Ugur that Resat called. "Oyku must live. I'll gladly give my life for my daughter." He ends the call. Ugur is devastated. Cemal tells him that he has a plan. Ugur wants to go with Cemal. Cemal tells him he has to stay, someone has to be here if Candan, Sevgi, and Oyku arrive. Cemal then drives off. He's driving very fast and trying unsuccessfully to reach Demir.
Candan is still running, though she's almost out of breath. Oyku wakes up and asks where Candan is. Sevgi says she doesn't know, but perhaps she'll be back soon. Sevgi is getting upset again. Oyku asks, "Maestra, are you OK?" Sevgi says yes.
Candan runs to a gas station. She asks the attendant for a phone. He tells her there's a public phone outside. Candan breathlessly says she doesn't have any money. A male voice behind her says "No money?" She turns around and sees Faik. Faik goes up to her, puts his arm around her, and whispers to her not to say anything or the others will die. He keeps his arm around her, as if they're a couple. The gas station attendant asks whether she's OK. She stares at him and reluctantly says yes, she is. She and Faik walk out and get into the car. He starts to drive off. He tells Candan, "You should have waited. We don't have a problem with you. Don't interfere."
Ugur is waiting at his house. He paces back and forth, clearly very nervous. Demir texts him. "I have a video. Show it to my daughter when the time comes." Ugur watches the video. In it, Demir is saying, "Oyku, if you see this video, it means that I'm gone. I promised I'd always be with you and watch you grow up, but I couldn't keep my promise. I'm very sorry. You're the most precious thing that I've had in my life. I don't have much time to be together. Forgive me, my love. We found each other too late, and I have to leave too soon. I know you're crying. Don't cry. Dry your tears. That's it, honey. That's my princess. At the start, you'll be mad at me for leaving you. But in time, you'll get used to my absence. That's how it has to be, that's life. Don't give up. Go to school, do the things you like. Don't get sick, take your medicine. You are not alone, you have many people who love you. Appreciate them. I know it's strange for someone like me to say this, but always be a good person. You are already a good person, always stay that way. That's the most important thing in this world, to be a good person. You taught me that. If you look for me and can't find me, I'll be in your heart. When you're upset or bored or stressed, look in your heart. I'll be there to help you. We are the warrior princess and the Iron Man. Goodbye. I love you so much."
Faik arrives back with Candan. He tells the others that he found her in the gas station just in time. They tell him to take her inside. Resat tells Candan, "I don't like what you did." Oyku asks Candan, "Are you OK? Did they hurt you?" Candan assures her that she's OK and they didn't hurt her. They trapped her.
Demir arrives. Oyku has come outside and sees him. She runs to him. They hug. She pleads with him, "Let's get out of here, Papa!" Demir tells her he has something he has to do, but he'll be back soon. Oyku pleads with him, "No, don't go! These men are very bad. They'll hurt you!" She then continues, "You promised not to do bad things. You'd stay out of trouble." Candan and Sevgi are now also outside. Candan takes the car key from Demir and gives it to Sevgi. She tells Sevgi to take Oyku and go. Sevgi and Oyku walk toward the car. Candan stays standing next to Demir. They hug and kiss each other passionately, and she tells him, "I love you" (finally!!!). They stare at each other, and finally Demir asks her to please go. She gets in the car and backs it out of the driveway. Sevgi is holding Oyku, who is crying, as Candan drives.
Resat comes out of the house. He faces Demir and asks, "Why didn't you stay in the comfort of you house and say to hell with all the rest? You asked for it. Now you'll pay with your life." He pulls out his gun and points it at Demir's head. Demir stares at him.
In the car,Oyku pleads with Candan to turn around and go back for Demir. She doesn't want to leave him with those bad men. Both Sevgi and Candan try to assure Oyku that her father will be back, don't worry. Suddenly there's the noise of a phone. It's Demir's phone. Candan tells Oyku that Demir left the phone so that she could call Ugur. She then does so. She tells Ugur that the three of them are free, but Demir... [long pause] stayed behind. She also tells Ugur that they're on their way to the police station and will meet him there. She tells Sevgi to call her father.
Ugur is at the police station when Candan and the others arrive. Oyku rushes into Ugur's arms, hugging him and crying very hard. "My father stayed there!" she wails. Sevgi hugs Captain Hussein. Candan goes inside the police station to give her statement. She provides them with directions to the house. She didn't recognize any of the people, but she overheard the names "Ahmed" and "Faik." Sevgi asks her father not to go after the bad guys, just come home with her. Candan tells Hussein "Demir sacrificed himself for us." Hussein says, "I won't let the kidnappers of my daughter get away with this."
Ugur carries the sleeping Oyku into his house and puts her to bed. Candan is with him. Somewhat later, Ugur tells Candan, "Oyku is not well. She won't eat. All she wants to do is sleep." He asks Candan whether Demir said anything. Candan says no. She then turns to Ugur and says, "Tell me everything. Why did we go through this? What's going on?" Ugur tells her, "It's all my fault, Candan. What I didn't have the courage to do years ago has ruined our lives. It goes back to when I was young. Ahmed killed Demir's father. I knew this, but they threatened me, I was scared, and so I didn't denounce him to the police. Now he has reappeared, and he's making our lives hell. But it's not just Ahmed, it's also his cruel boss." Candan asks, "How can we save Demir from these men?" Ugur says "the police will do it. Trust them. They know what they're doing." [Viewerville lets out an anticipatory sarcastic snort.]
Ugur calls Cemal. He has tried many times, but this time Cemal answers. We hear only Ugur's side of the conversation. He asks Cemal where he is, and then he tells him "They're safe, but I don't know anything about Demir."
Several police cars arrive at the place where Candan, Sevgi, and Oyku had been held. The police go through every room, and of course they find nothing and no one.
Captain Hussein puts Sevgi to bed and sits by the side of the bed as she sleeps. He gets a call from the police informing him that they went to the site, but no one was there.
Cemal arrives back at Ugur's. His first question is "How is Oyku?" He goes to see her sleeping. Hussein calls Ugur. Ugur thanks him for keeping them informed. Cemal tells Ugur and Candan to calm down. There may be hope. We then see a flashback that probably shows what Cemal was up to when he left, saying he had a plan. He goes to where he expects to find Arif and demands to see him. He's told that Arif is out of the country. Cemal insists that it's urgent that he speak to Arif. They put through a call. Cemal says to Arif, "Tell him not to kill my friend. You owe me, Arif. I saved your life when we were in prison." Arif says he'll call Resat, but Cemal shouldn't expect too much. Cemal tells him, "They listen to each other, not to us."
Candan asks Cemal, "What can we do? Just sit and wait? What if Arif can't do anything? What if the police find nothing? Demir spoke as if he didn't plan to come back, as if we were never going to see him again. He said goodbye as if he were expecting his death. What do I do if something happens to him? What happens to Oyku, she's so young?" Cemal tells Candan "That won't happen. Demir will return, and everything will go back to how it was before. But we have to be patient. We have to be stronger than we were before. He'll be back. If we don't believe he'll return, Oyku won't believe it, either." The camera focuses on a desolate Candan's face as the episode ends.
Thanks for a solid recap of a distressing episode Juanita.
Not any easier reading it than watching it.
Finally: We get a kiss! And a declaration of love from Candan. He didn’t reciprocate, just told her to go. Well, if Demir has to die, he goes knowing that Candan loves him.
I heard a gunshot as the camera pulled away from Resat holding his gun to Demir’s head. Next, we saw Oyku suddenly sit up in the car and she screamed for them to go back for Demir. So, did Arif contact Resat? Who was shot? Demir? Resat? They better not keep us waiting very long to find out.
I will recap tonight. I have to prepare myself.
dondi356
Thanks very much, dondi356. I might add that it was not only very difficult to read and watch, it was also difficult to recap what happened. I was close to tears at several points, even though I hadn't been while watching the episode.
I was surprised by what you said about hearing a gunshot as the camera pulled away from Resat, so I went to the VCR's recording and watched that scene again. I heard the drum beats from the music repeating several times, and then I heard what could have been a gunshot, or it could have been the loud part of the drum beat. I'm not sure. I know that as I watched the episode last night, it didn't occur to me that that was a gunshot. Frankly, I trust your ears better than mine. I guess we'll find out tonight. I know that the novela's title, Todo por mi hija, indicates that Demir would be willing to die for Oyku, and he has said as much. However, it's VERY hard for me to believe that they'll kill off Demir.
Good luck with tonight's recap!
Juanita, outstanding! I was thinking of you as the story unfolded and wondered how you would manage all the unsettling scenes, but you did it beautifully. Like dondi, it was just as unsettling reading it and living it again, but it was worth the read.
I had to put my beanie on when Faik walked into the service station. When we saw Candan running, it seemed that there was no one around for miles...and suddenly he was there! Had nothing been the clerk, I think I would have called the cops anyway since Candan was too convincing when she nodded that everything was ok.
dondi, I thought I heard a shot as the scene changed, but wasn’t sure; thanks for confirming that. Demir can’t be dead so maybe Resat shot into the air as a scare tactic. If I were as bad a man as Resat is, I would shoot Ahmed for causing so much trouble. And It’s mind boggling how all the vengeance is focused on Demir when Cemal and Ugur were the ones who initially started this horrible ball rolling.
I too was hoping that Demor would reciprocate the “I love you” but oh well, hopefully there will plenty more opportunities for that later.
Did the cops really think Resat would be waiting for them? That was useless for them to storm in the way they did.
Without physical proof, I'm holding out hope that Demir is still alive.
Rgv Chick, I'm all for shooting Ahmed. I guess Ahmed is obsessed with Demir out of fear of life in jail. Ahmed started this way back because he killed Demir's father. He has no one to blame but himself. Resat is just ticked that it lead to his deal going down, so it's strictly business for him. And let's face it, it makes for better drama to go after Demir.
I wondered not so much about Faik finding Candan as I wondered about the clerk. Candan looked like a wreck. I was hoping he would call the police. But that couldn't happen; we needed Demir to show up to rescue the girls.
I pictured a thought bubble over Demir's head when Candan made her declaration: Now she tells me!
dondi356
Juanita, I've had a busy work-from-home day so far. No time to read your recap, but I just wanted to thank you for doing it!
Thanks very much, Rgv Chick! Yes, Faik's arrival at the gas station was a beanie moment for me as well. I also thought Candan did a good job of looking as if she didn't mean it when she confirmed she was OK. Then again, the gas station attendant didn't seem all that bright. Candan rushes in, panicked and out of breath, asking for a phone, and he simply tells her where there's a pay phone.
And yes, I also thought it was clear that the police would find no one there when they finally got to the house where the hostages had been kept. That was why I snickered when Ugur assured Candan that the police will save Demir, they know what they're doing. I can't decide whether he really believed this or was just saying it to make Candan feel better. And I can't decide which would annoy me more, stupidity or condescension. It's one thing to tell 9-year-old Oyku that Demir will return even if you fear he might not, but another thing to act that way to an intelligent adult. Oh well, I have to remind myself that Ugur has many wonderful qualities.
Slight rewind, Candan is crying about Demir.
Oyku is dreaming and talking in her sleep. She repeats over and over, dad…don’t go…please don’t go… dad… Candan, Ugur and Cemal rush in. Candan wakes Oyku. Oyku is crying, she asks, my dad is coming back, right? Candan hugs her and assures her he will be back. Cemal and Ugur reassure Oyku that Demir will return. Ugur says, remember Demir is the Iron Man. Oyku says, ok but I’m scared of sleeping alone. She asks them all to stay with her. Candan is next to her and Ugur and Cemal sit on the bed. We are here, Candan says.
Next morning, Ugur and Candan are setting the table outside for breakfast. Candan is speaking with Sevgi on the phone. Sounds like Sevgi is taking some time off from school. Ugur tells Candan if Sevgi doesn’t want to be alone, he can pick her up. Her father must be at the station. Candan smiles and hands the phone to Ugur.
Ugur tells Sevgi, if your father isn’t home, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to be alone. I’ll pick you up. It’s not for me, but Candan and Oyku are here. It’s best if you are all together. She accepts.
Cemal comes out and Candan says Oyku hasn’t eaten for days. I made her favorites; I hope she eats. Oyku comes to breakfast and right away she asks, is my dad back yet? Cemal takes this one saying, your dad is still busy. He will be back as soon as he’s done working. Ugur tells Oyku he’s going to pick up Sevgi and bring her over.
Oyku asks Ugur if he has seen Lucky, she can’t find him. Uh, oh, Ugur thinks Lucky must have run away when he left the door open. Oyku is sad, how could you let him run away? Candan says not to worry. She thinks he will come back when he’s hungry. What if he doesn’t, asks Oyku? Ugur apologizes; it was unintentional. Candan suggests they have breakfast and then they can go around the neighborhood and look for Lucky.
Oyku doesn’t want breakfast. Candan tries to talk her into it, what will I tell your father? What if he asks why his princess didn’t have breakfast? Ugur leaves and Oyku, Cemal and Candan sit to eat.
Ugur is waiting outside Sevgi’s building. She comes out. There’s a little awkward silence, but then they greet each other the ritual cheek kisses. They start walking. Ugur starts the conversation. How are you, he asks? She’s feeling a bit better. He asks her how she slept. Not very well. She kept waking up. She thought she shouldn’t go to work today so she asked for the day off. She can’t teach like this. It’s for the best, says Ugur.
Sevgi says, my dad wanted me to go to the station with him if I didn’t want to be alone. I didn’t want to. She felt it would only make her more depressed. Besides, she says, if he sees me with you now, he would be furious. Ugur says that he is right to be mad. Ugur continues, if I were him, I wouldn’t let my daughter go with a jerk like me. What kind of man am I? I can’t even take care of a cat. Captain Huseyin is right to reject me.
Sevgi has stopped walking and Ugur turns back to her. He asks he why did you stop? She says nothing but throws her arms around him and gives him a big hug. Ugur hugs back and he’s smiling. Sevgi says, don’t worry, you’re not like you said. Ugur tells her, you don’t know how worried I was; I was desperate. And she tells him, I was so worried that I wouldn’t see you again. Ugur, she says, I thought about you…the two of us…life. I thought about everything. I don’t want us to hurt each other anymore. Every moment is precious. Ugur says, Sevgi, I don’t know how much I love you. And she responds, I love you so much, too. They hug again. He kisses her on the cheek and forehead. They hold hands as they continue walking.
dondi356
Oyku is picking at her breakfast. She tells Candan, she can’t eat. Candan asks her to eat for her sake. Candan tries to entice her with honey on a piece of bread. Cemal looks at his phone and silently signals “there’s nothing” to Candan. Oyku asks if she can stay home from school today. Yes, and Sevgi is not going either, Candan says, we all should rest.
Ugur and Sevgi arrive. Candan tells Sevgi to sit and eat but she doesn’t feel like eating. Oyku says she didn’t want to eat either, but no one listens to her. Sevgi goes to the kitchen to get tea for herself and Ugur. Candan finally tells Oyku she doesn’t have to finish eating. She should go wash up and they can go look for Lucky.
Ugur feels bad for Oyku; all this and now her cat is lost. Oyku’s mind is constantly on her father. Ugur says, Oyku didn’t sleep well and kept calling Demir’s name. Sevgi wonders where Demir is. I wish I knew, says Candan. Sevgi says she’s really worried. Cemal says not to worry; they need to be strong. How else can we get Oyku to feel better? Yes, says Candan, Oyku matters most.
Oyku is ready to go with cat food in hand. They go around the neighborhood asking for Lucky, but no one has seen him. Candan tells Oyku not to worry, Lucky will find his way home. What about my dad, asks Oyku? Candan leans down and looks her in the eyes, your dad will also come back. Believe me. Don’t worry.
Resat is riding in a car. He gets a call. We only hear his side. What did you do? Did you get rid of the body? And the identity? Good, good, he says with an evil smile.
Cemal was thinking. Maybe we should tell Oyku that her dad called. What will we say, asks Sevgi? We can say work is taking longer than expected, says Cemal, and he will be back as soon as he finishes. Ugur thinks that is a good idea. Sevgi agrees.
Oyku and Candan return. They couldn’t find Lucky. Cemal tells her, not to worry; Lucky is probably partying with his friends. He will be back when he gets tired. He tells Oyku, we have good news for you. She perks up, is dad coming? No, says Cemal, but he called. Candan looks excited, too, but Ugur gives her a signal that this is not so. Oyku wants to know what Demir said. Ugur tells her that his work was done here but then he was sent off to Izmit to get a new restaurant up and running. Ok, says Oyku, I also want to talk to dad. Let’s call him. Cemal says they can’t call. He called from a public phone. Candan reminds Oyku that Demir left his phone in the car. Cemal tells Oyku her dad said to give her a big kiss and he said that he loves you very much. Oyku is disappointed she didn’t get to speak with him. Sevgi says, he will call again.
Ugur asks Oyku if she would like to go inside to watch TV. It will take her mind off things. They can’t find any cartoons, so Ugur suggests he find something for her to watch on his phone. (big uh, oh here) He sets her up and goes back outside.
Ugur says, this is exhausting. Cemal says he wishes Ugur was more careful with the cat. Ugur was more concerned about the girls at the time and not worried about the cat. Cemal says that’s right, he’s sorry.
Oyku has trouble with the phone. The cartoon stopped. She looks around on the phone and finds the video that Demir left. Dad? She smiles and starts it. We hear Demir’s voice. Her expression quickly changes when she hears what he has to say. She anxiously says…dad…dad…
dondi356
Ugur asks Cemal if Arif has called. No, he hasn’t. Sevgi asks what’s going on and Ugur says he will tell her later. They hear Oyku crying. Ugur realizes she’s playing Demir’s video. He bolts from the table shouting, Oyku! Oyku! Everyone follows. Ugur grabs at the phone, give me that! Oyku is distraught. She asks, why is my dad talking like this? Candan goes to comfort Oyku. Oyku screams at her, don’t touch me! The video is still playing; we hear Demir saying, I know that you are crying. Don’t do it. Dry your tears. Everything goes silent and everyone is listening to the video. Oyku is crying. Candan says, Demir...
Cemal asks Ugur, what is this? Ugur asks for the phone again and grabs it away. Oyku cries out, my dad is saying goodbye to me! Where is dad? Where is he? Where did they take him? Ugur tries to tell Oyku this video is nonsense. It’s not real. Your dad is in Izmit. Oyku’s not buying it. She says, he’s not in Izmit, you are lying to me. If he’s in Izmit, call him right now! The adults look at each other. They have no answer for Oyku. Oyku exclaims, liars! And she runs off to the bedroom with Candan following.
Cemal questions Ugur, how could you not tell me this? Demir just sent this yesterday, Ugur responds. I didn’t want anyone to worry so I waited. That’s why I didn’t tell, he says, I couldn’t believe it either.
Oyku is crying in bed. What happened to dad? Candan tells her, nothing happened to your dad. It’s like Ugur said, he went out of town for work. He will be here soon. But the video, cries Oyku, didn’t you hear what he said? Candan heard but she says, don’t you know your father? He knew we were kidnapped and he was so afraid. He thought he couldn’t save us. Maybe that’s why he recorded that video. Because he thought he would never see you again. But your dad saved us. Iron man saved us. Oyku says, that’s right. Iron man saved us. Candan is sure Demir will call again tomorrow and let us know when he’s coming back. This calms Oyku.
Ugur is down on himself once again. Why am I so stupid, he says. Why am I like this? Sevgi tells him to let it go. Ugur says, what if something really happened to Demir? Cemal interrupts…shh... calm down. Nothing will happen to Demir.
There is a knock at the door; Ugur and Cemal go to answer. It’s the police. Ugur Adiguzel? Yes? Come with us to the police station. Why? What happened? It’s about Demir Gokturk, the officer says. Cemal asks, what happened to Demir? You’ll find out at the station, the office replies. Ugur and Cemal grab their jackets and Sevgi says she will stay with Candan and Oyku.
Candan comes out of the bedroom and asks, who came? Where did they go? It was the police, says Sevgi, they said it was about Demir so Ugur and Cemal left. Candan has to sit down. Sevgi says not to worry, maybe it’s good news. Candan looks very worried.
Cut to the police station. Huseyin is looking at a picture. I can’t tell what it is but Huseyin looks very unhappy. He sees Ugur and Cemal coming down the hall. He puts the picture down. He asks them to come in and sit down. They don’t sit. Cemal asks, what is it? Ugur says, the officer said it was about Demir, is that true? Huseyin says it is about Demir. He asks them again to sit. Cemal and Ugur give each other worried looks and sit.
dondi356
Huseyin has a hard time starting. Ugur asks, what happened? The guys look increasingly worried. Huseyin finally manages to say, I brought you here….because I have to give you my condolences. Ugur exhales, what? He has tears in his eyes. Cemal stares in shock at Huseyin. Huseyin explains, Demir’s body was found inside a burned car. What are you saying, asks Cemal? Ugur is getting agitated, he interrupts, what the hell are you talking about? Huseyin continues, they found his body near the farm. His face was completely burned. Unrecognizable. The car flipped before burning. They found his wallet and ID nearby. No, no, cries Ugur, waving his hands, no way! It can’t be him! Ugur is sure this is a mistake. (I feel the same way; this can’t be happening) Huseyin says the height and weight matches, too.
Huseyin needs them to go to the morgue to identify the body. When can we go asks Cemal? Ugur is still insisting that this isn’t Demir. It’s a mistake! You didn’t find Demir. He pleads, it can’t be him! Cemal tries to quiet Ugur. Huseyin says they can go whenever they are ready. Cemal says let’s go now. Ugur objects, no, no, Cemal. Cemal has to drag him out. All the while Ugur is crying, Demir can’t be dead! He’s not dead! Cemal tells Ugur to be quiet, let’s go. Ugur is hysterical. I think everyone in the department is looking as they go down the hall. We see the accident pictures on Huseyin’s desk.
They get to the morgue. Cemal goes in, Ugur waits by the door. The attendant uncovers the body. Cemal looks. (Wow. The look on Cemal’s face is heartbreaking!) Cemal tears up and looks away. He nods to Ugur. Ugur cries. (Tell me how can Cemal make a positive ID when the face is unrecognizable? Was Demir shot or did he die in a car accident? Something’s not right here.)
Ugur and Cemal are sitting by the water. Both guys have been crying. Cemal takes out the envelope with Demir’s belongings. He opens Demir’s wallet. We see his ID and the pic of Demir and Oyku.
The girls are making pudding. Oyku is stirring. Ugur and Cemal arrive home. How did it go? Is everything ok? Cemal asks Candan to step outside.
Candan wants to know what happened. How can Cemal tell her? He faces away from her. She turns him around. He asks her to sit. She doesn’t; she just wants to know what happened. Say it already! Sevgi comes out. Candan yells at Cemal, please! Just say it! She doesn’t want to sit. He struggles to find the words and finally says….my condolences. Tears fill Candan’s eyes; she trembles. She asks, what did you say? We lost Demir, replies Cemal. Candan cries out and collapses on to the seat. Sevgi holds her as she sobs loudly. Cemal closes the door so Oyku doesn’t hear. He says let’s not tell her now. We fill find a way to break it to her later. (This is too sad.)
Cut to Oyku happily making her pudding and Ugur trying to hold it together for her sake.
Cemal has taken Candan and Sevgi to his apartment. He asks if Candan is feeling any better. She can’t even speak. Sevgi says he should go; don’t leave Ugur and Oyku alone. Cemal is worried about leaving Candan and Sevgi. Candan says they will be fine, go stay with Oyku. Don’t let her suspect anything. Sevgi thinks it will be better if Candan stays here tonight. She asks Cemal about the funeral. It’s tomorrow afternoon. Sevgi says she will watch Oyku. Not necessary, Cemal says, they made plans for Oyku to go to Mercan’s. Cemal tells Sevgi not to leave Ugur, he needs her now.
Ugur is looking at a picture of himself with Oyku and Demir. Oyku comes in with the pudding. He wipes his eyes and joins her on the couch. She eats. She notices he’s not eating. You don’t like it? Yes, he does. He tries a bit. Oyku asks if he has spoken to Candan. Yes, he says she had an emergency case at the clinic.
dondi356
Ugur tells Oyku someone is coming tomorrow. Oyku thinks it’s Demir. No, it’s Mercan. His mother called and she said Mercan is worried. He wants to know how you are doing. She asked if you could come over tomorrow. Maybe you could go to the movies or something. Oyku thinks that’s a good idea. Ugur holds Oyku close.
Cemal is walking by the water. He sits on a bench. His phone rings. It’s Ugur. Is Oyku ok, he asks. Yes, Oyku is sleeping. Ugur called to find out how Cemal is doing. Cemal says he’s ok and asks Ugur to take care of Oyku until he gets back. They are so upset they can’t even talk and they quickly hang up. Ugur looks at the picture of himself with Demir and Oyku again. He goes to it, picks it up, sits down and cries. Demir, brother….
Wow.
And we are out.
dondi356
Wow, dondi356, you really got stuck with a terrible episode!! I'm amazed you were able to do such a superb job of conveying what happened.
I was uneasy as soon as Ugur suggested that he and Oyku watch TV together. I feared a newscast that would mention Demir's name as a murder victim. I was momentarily relieved when they couldn't find anything appropriate on TV, but then Ugur lent Oyku his phone to watch cartoons. My first thought was What? Does a grown man keep children's cartoons on his phone? And then I thought, uh oh, what if someone tries to call Ugur with news about Demir? And then, of course, I realized that Demir had sent the farewell video to Ugur's phone, and I knew what was about to happen. Arrgh!
dondi, I'm really glad that in an aside you questioned the supposed circumstances of Demir's death. I strongly agree with you when you say "Something's not right here." When Resat had that earlier phone call, he asked the guy "what did you do with the body?" Why would he have asked that if Demir had really been burned to death in a car crash? Resat also asked about the ID. These questions, coupled with the fact that the body found in the car was burnt beyond recognition, plus the fact that the wallet wasn't burned at all, all make me feel that Viewerville is being had. My guess/hope is that Demir is not dead, that the body Cemal identified was not Demir's, and that Demir's ID had been planted near but not in the car. I guess I also feel this way because there are still eight more episodes to go, and they would all be intolerable if those eight episodes all dealt with the aftermath of Demir's death. I can't imagine that we're going to have to endure all this sadness from now until the end of the novela.
I'm not looking forward to recapping tomorrow's episode, but I realize they'll probably keep the sadness up for a couple more episodes. But if goes on for longer than that....
Thanks, Juanita.
Funny, I didn’t think about Oyku watching TV but when Ugur gave her the phone, I immediately thought about Demir’s video.
About Resat’s phone call: Of course, they would have to get rid of the body. I did wonder why Resat asked about “identity”. I started to have real doubts when Huseyin explained the circumstances of Demir’s death. Why would Resat need to make it look like Demir died in an accident? Why would he want to conceal the identity of the body?
I agree with your assessments, Juanita. Especially with eight episodes to go, it’s unlikely that Demir is gone. More often, the real tragedies happen close to the end. Let’s hope they bring Demir back before Oyku finds out. That would be unbearable.
Lots of emotion last night. Well done by all. But for some reason, it was Cemal’s restrained grief that got to me the most.
Looks like you get to recap the funeral tonight, lucky you. But keep in mind, we still have hope for the HEA.
dondi356
Hi dondi356. I'm glad you said, "Looks like you get to recap the funeral tonight, lucky you." I hadn't realized that it was already after midnight when I wrote my comment, so I still thought of the next episode as tomorrow's. Hence, I wrote that I wasn't looking forward to recapping tomorrow's episode. But yes, (un)lucky me, I get to do tonight's recap!
Such a depressing episode, but you still managed to deliver another of your stellar recaps, dondi, thank you!
Juanita, once again you've managed to write my exact thoughts and emotions about this episode, especially in regards to Ugur having Oyku watch a video. I suppose he could use the excuse that he is not thinking clearly because of the situation with Demir, but this is certainly not the first time he does something thoughtlessly. Idiota!
The actors did a tremendous job of showing their disbelief and emotions when they learned of Demir's alleged demise. And ITA that there is something fishy about the burning of the body and the ID which was coincidentally found intact. I refuse to believe that Demir is gone. When Huseyin said that the body they found was similar in weight and height as Demir, I immediately thought of Faik or Ahmed...surely it has to be one of those two...crossing my fingers.
Juanita, good luck tonight, I'm sure it will be another tear-jerker :-(
Rgv Chick, I'm glad to see that you too find there's something fishy about Demir's supposed death. One thing that occurs to me is that there's what I think is a fairly simple way of determining whether the unrecognizable body is Demir's: do a DNA test between the corpse's DNA and Oyku's. Of course, they'd have to get Oyku's DNA without letting her know, but that's been done before. :-) In fact, I wonder whether the sample of her DNA that Demir provided is still on file and could be used. But even if it isn't or can't, it shouldn't be all that hard to get another sample. Just a thought.
Wow, two very, very sad episodes. I read both today. Dondi and Juanita deserve Medals of Honor for having to recap both these. And such excellent recaps, both of them.
Well, this is my last Turkish novela. I was furious with dragging out the death/non-death of Demir. And they are still doing it. I suspect it's either Ahmed or Faik who was burned up. I can't account for Cemal identifying the body.
But whether Demir is dead or not I'm angry with being jerked around, possibly for a whole week. So...goodbye Turkey from novelera.
