Hercai - #48 – Parte 1 de 2

Everything is over the top and dialed up to 10 with the emotions tonight.

How I love to see Azize afraid! We open with her saying to her self “Who wrote this?” Her hands tremble when she goes into her den (not a woman, an animal). [I was hoping for the beads to break again as the camera gives us a close-up of them, but no such luck.]

Hazar calls Mirat to say that the whole gas station thing was a fake. He tries to convince Miran to listen. Miran hears but doesn’t respond.

We see Reyyan getting stronger and stronger each episode. Apparently there’s a picture of Miran with HAG on her dresser. She tells the picture that she saw the fear in her [Azize’s] eyes and that she [Azize] knows that Hazar is innocent. She gets a call from Azat but is afraid to pick up.

Melike gets a call from Miran asking her to visit Reyyan today, and he insists she not call him Señor; she’s his friend.

Miran is in the car ready to leave when Hazar blocks his way with his car. Miran is his usual irate self with Hazar. Hazar says it was not a simple kidnapping; he wants to know what Miran knows…that they need to work together to protect Reyyan. The rooster says that HE’LL protect his wife. Hazar: “You think your enemy is only outside your house?”

Mahmut comes to see Azize to tell her that he overheard Miran talking with Hazar and that something was said about their working together. [Mahmut looks like a kid ratting out another kid to the teacher.] Azize remembers telling Mahmut to arrange the shooting at Miran’s new house and that Mahmut was dubious in case someone would get killed. Then she asks Mahmut to get her car.

Nasuh gets in a car to go somewhere he won’t tell Cihan about. But he does take Yusuf with him.

Melike is happily packing some of Reyyan’s clothing when, of course, Zehra comes in. She insists that Reyyan’s clothes stay here because Reyyan is coming back.

Miran and Firat grill some guy who then runs off. [I didn’t really recognize the guy. Was he one of the gas station liars?] They don’t catch the guy. But Miran tells Firat he can’t tell anyone, including his grandmother, that Miran is trying to get to the bottom of the kidnapping.

FINALLY!! In the car Azize reads the note. [Are we to suppose Reyyan never even looked at it?] This is what it said: Es hora que pagues por las vidas que tomaste en sus juegos, Azize Aslanbey. (It’s time you paid for the lives you took in your games.)

Hercai - #48 – Parte 1 de 2

We then see why HAG left the konak. She puts poor Hunky Bar Bodyguard, Mahmut, to the test. She mentions having rescued him as a child. As a loyalty test she gives him back his gun. He puts it to his temple and pulls the trigger. She then opens her hand and shows him the bullets she’s removed. And she has brought 5 or 6 other guards to be sure she’s safe while doing this awful test.

Nasuh meets with some guys around a conference table. “Everything I told you, you’ll give me what I want?” They say yes. “But when?” They say Monday would be best. He says “When they find this out it will be too late. We have waited many years; we can wait until Monday." He tells Yusuf: "No one can know about this. Cihan, Hazar and Azat can’t know anything.” We find out they are in Midyat because GT and Yusuf say so.

Elif tells Azat that Reyyan told him the truth; she loves Miran. Azat insists that she’s being held against her will. And he must see her face to face to find out the truth. Cihan is spying on them as they talk in Azat’s car. He says that Azat needs to court Elif so as to drive HAG nuts.

Sehriyar comes to Reyyan’s room and tells her to come. We see that the courtyard is full of clothes that Miran bought her. Just then Melike arrives. Reyyan tells Melike that the amount of clothes are way too much and will make the others hate her.

Sultana starts raving about Melike being there; she begins to throw her out when HAG comes back. Azize tells Reyyan that no Sadoglu can be there and that she, Reyyan, can leave with her servant if she wishes. Melike starts to cry from all the nastiness. Miran arrives and yells that HE invited Melike.

Melike has run out and Reyyan follows her. They embrace. Melike tells Reyyan that Zehra told her that the Aslanbey konak would be a hell. And now Melike has seen it with her own eyes. She asks Reyyan to leave with her. Reyyan replies that she cannot leave him; she loves him.

Reyyan tells Miran that she needs to speak to him privately. She tells him that she needs to meet Azat face to face to tell him how she feels. It’s the only way for there to be peace. Miran, of course, goes nuts. She tells him that she’s not a slave; he can’t forbid her to see her cousin.

Elif tries to reason with Miran in a car outside. Elif makes a good comparison. Reyyan has had to co-exist with Gonul, his cousin, and it’s lots worse for her because they were married. She says that Reyyan feels the same way about Azat; he’s her cousin she’s grown up with. He still resists because…must be testosterone poisoning.

Thanks very much, novelera, for this excellent recap. I'm especially impressed--and grateful--that you were able to do it, and so quickly, in spite of your book club's meeting.

You summed the episode up very well right from the start: everything was over the top and dialed up to 10. I wonder how Miran and Azat made it to chronological adulthood, given their tendency to become furious and out of control almost every day. At the end of the recap, you suggest Miran's often irrational responses "must be testosterone poisoning." I burst out laughing, but there seems to be more than a little truth to what you say.

Miran's loud and irrational outbursts drive me up the wall, and so too does his overall treatment of Reyyan. Yes, he loves her and wants her to be happy, but he also treats her like a child. He never tells her where he's going or what he's planning. She shouldn't worry her pretty little head, just leave everything to Miran, he'll take care of it. ARRGH!!! Thank goodness, Reyyan is beginning to develop some self-confidence. I was delighted in this episode when, in response to Miran's telling her he won't give her permission to see Azat, she tells him that she's not his slave and she doesn't need his permission.

I was stunned by Azize's "test" of Mahmoud's loyalty. I enjoyed your likening his reporting on Miran to "a kid ratting out another kid to the teacher." And in spite of his going out of his way to report to Azize, she decides to put him to the "test." Good grief! Perhaps the thing that unsettled me most was Mahmoud's willingness to put the gun to his head and pull the trigger. Did he really believe that as long as he was innocent, nothing bad would happen? And does he really believe that Azize has the right to ask him to do this? One of the things that's so interesting about this novela is the portrayal of the provincial Turkish society (I say "provincial" to distinguish the social mores in, say, Midyat from those in a more modern city like Istanbul. Or am I misaken?)

There were several things that were left hanging at the end of the episode, especially whatever it is that Nasuh is planning for "Monday." And it's still far from clear (at least to me) who was behind Reyyan's kidnapping, and what the point of it was. At leasta we did finally learn what the note said that Reyyan delivered to Azize. My guess is that Reyyan did read it--why wouldn't she? She certainly seems interested in finding out what's going on, and espeically now that she's becoming more assertive, I would expect that she read the note. Whether or how it may be helpful to her remains to be seen.

Excellent recap novelera! You did not miss a thing, but I think I did, so thanks for filling in a few gaps in dialogue, especially the translation of the note from the kidnappers.

I think Miran is getting a bit better, at least he didn’t pull a gun on Hazar when he blocked his way. I consider this progress. 😊 He was kind to Melike, even telling her to call him Miran, not Sr. Miran, as he considers her a friend. I thought it was a nice touch for Miran to “shop” in such an over-the-top way for his love. Now I don’t have to obsess about Reyyan’s wardrobe.

Reyyan is definitely showing more of a spine. I liked how she stood up for Melike with Sultana and Azize. She also didn’t sit in her room crying when Miran had that hissy fit about Azat, she is going to make him dial it down. He promised to make her smile, so he better get his act together, she took the sea shell with her as a reminder of his promises.

The one thing that was over the top crazy was the “loyalty” test of HBB. During the episode, Azize did speculate that the note writer could be Gonul or Sultana, as she remembered things they had said to her recently. Why didn’t she put a gun to their head?

Now we know where the loyalty to Azize comes from for HBB, she “adopted” him as the youngest of 9 kids. She said she cured him of his illness, educated him, raised him with values (?) and helped his family. She considered him loyal, like a son. She askes him, are you now capable of betraying me? He tells her, if you doubt my loyalty, then shoot me. That was when she handed him the gun and said prove it. He says, I only know one way to do that, holding the gun to his head. Before pulling the trigger, he asks for her blessing! Now that is loyalty.

I am not sure who that kid was Miran and Firat were interrogating. Did you notice after the foot chase, when they came back to the car, Firat has a non-verbal exchange with the boy? He sort of winks and shakes his head slightly. I don’t know if that meant, don’t worry about Miran’s outburst and threats, or something more sinister.

I am definitely interested in what Nasuh is up to.

Thanks again novelera!

Thanks for the comments, Juanita and VVS. Yes, Juanita, Azat and Miran's behavior is adolescent at best.

Thanks, VVS, for expounding on what Azize said to Mahmut (or more likely Mahmoud as Juanita spelled it) about raising him almost as a child. This seems to be a common theme in this novela. Firat and Yaner also seem to have been treated a bit like members of the family.

I was struck by something this morning. I don't know any Turkish grammar. Perhaps Dondi can enlighten us. The note, as translated into Spanish, used the familiar verb form instead of the more formal usted. This could mean the writer is someone who has been on that close level with her. Or it could mean to show a bit of disrespect by addressing her that way. Of course, the note was in Turkish, so who's to say why the translators came up with that usage in Spanish.

Sorry I’m late again. Great recap, novelera, thank you. LOL, “must be testosterone poisoning.”

Glad to see Reyyan standing up to the witches in the Aslanbey konak and to Miran as well.

Mahmud said “hakkını helal et.” This phrase gets me every time I hear it. Mahmud was asking Azize for forgiveness for anything he did to her intentional or unintentional and there would be no claim against him in the divine court. Then he could be at peace in the afterlife. Happy that YouTube translated it as “forgive me” instead of the usual “give me your blessing”. Wow, Mahmud looked HAG right in the eyes and didn’t hesitate. He was ready to die. And the HAG did give him a “helal olsun” after he proved his loyalty.

You will also hear an imam ask “hakkini helal et” at a funeral. The mourners call out with one voice, “helal olsun”. The mourners are publicly saying they hold no grudge against the deceased.

My Turkish is far from perfect, but the note to Azize did not use a formal address. Very interesting, novelera.

Wow, dondi356, that request for "forgiveness" is definitely much more powerful! The Peacock network translated it in English as "blessing." I didn't have time to check the Turkish YouTube version.

novelera, nice catch on the note being the informal "tu" so definitely someone close and probably near her age. Very interesting indeed.

Thanks for another Turkish lesson dondi356!

Herc #49 part 1

Elif gets out and Reyyan gets in the car with Miran and they head off. She has the shell in her hand.

Ever suspicious HAG asks Sultana, why are you happy? What’s going on? Sultana says, my daughter has cried a lot, but calm comes after the storm. Elif speaks up, Reyyan didn’t make your daughter cry. Save your words for the guilty person. Elif says she has lost her appetite and leaves the table. Sultana warns Azize, your favorite granddaughter is a Reyyan fan. If you haven’t taken precautions, you should now, before it’s too late.

Azize answers, don’t worry, I constantly take precautions. This would never happen, but if anyone ever took everything I have, my land, my home, I’d still be able to get ahead because I have myself. Sultana responds, if Sultan Suleiman couldn’t have the world, neither will you. Azize says, there’s a big difference between you and me. If I die today, I have grandchildren who will avenge my death. She asks Sultana, what do you have? Apart from what I give you, you have nothing. Gonul has been quietly listening to this exchange.

Miran is speeding down the road and Reyyan asks him to slow down. He doesn’t. She asks again. And again… stop! You’re scaring me. He pulls over. Is this how you deal with your anger, she asks? Sometimes it’s so hard to talk to you. I don’t know what to say to get through to you. Don’t make this harder. He’s simmering silently. She reminds him, you said we would talk, and we would share everything.

Miran blows up. I’ve said everything there is to say about Azat Sadoglu! Enough! Reyyan answers back, you spoke and decided. Did you ask me what I thought? You didn’t! She unbuckles her seat belt and says, you’re quick to forget your promises, Miran. She gets out of the car and starts walking back. He hits the steering wheel and goes after her. Reyyan!

He catches up to her and she asks him, are you going to tell me what to do? I accepted to be with you despite all our problems. Have you ever thought about that? I’m in love with you but you hurt me. You ask to heal my wounds, but you only open them again. Tell me who am I? Am I an object or a trophy? Someone who blindly follows orders or the wife with whom you share your life?

You’re everything to me, he says. if I’m everything to you, she tells him, you will never have anything else in your life. Why don’t you just let me be your companion? If you lose everything else, you will still have me. If I want to talk to Azat, she explains, it’s not to hurt you. I don’t want to lose you or him. I don’t want anyone to die.

This is extremely difficult for Miran. I can’t do it, he says, understand? I can’t allow it. I know Azat’s intentions. Rey says, you’re asking me to love you and leave him for dead. This is impossible, Miran. Azat won’t stop. You will do something bad and hurt Azat and our relationship as well. With that, she starts walking again.

Miran hurries back to the car and turns it around to get Reyyan. He gets out and calmly asks her to get in the car. She does. As they drive, she opens the window and tosses out the shell. Miran stops the car and goes to retrieve it. Reyyan gets out of the car and sits at the side of the road. Miran joins her.

He asks, why did you throw this away? She sadly answers, because having another life seems impossible. Miran puts down the shell and takes Rey’s hands. She continues, I trusted you and I even forgave you. She asks, why don’t you trust me after all I’ve done for us? So, I guess that’s it. My love isn’t enough to make me worthy of your trust. She gets up.

Herc #49 part 2

Azat is driving when he gets a call from Reyyan. Reyyan, are you okay? She assures him she’s fine. He tells her they need to talk and asks her to hear him out before saying no. She cuts him off saying, that’s why I’m calling. How about we meet at the inn in an hour? Azat quickly agrees. We see a shadow pass by Reyyan’s window. And that shadow is Azize. Her inner voice speaks, I discovered you. I see you are planning to meet your cousin Azat.

Meanwhile at the Sadoglu country house, Yaren is massaging her complaining mother’s swollen legs and feet. Handan whines that this pregnancy is different than with Yaren. She adds, the problems started after you were born [lol]. Yaren shoots her a look. As Handan continues to complain, Yaren interjects, considering your years of experience, I’m sure this wasn’t unexpected. Handan swats her with her fan—you’re evil! You take every opportunity to be cruel. Use your hands and not your mouth.

Hanife shows up with water for Handan. She notes how Handan is being pampered. Then she sighs and rubs her neck. Hanife asks Yaren, could you give me a massage as well? [Was Handan motioning that Yaren should comply?] Yaren is disgusted and gets up and leaves. Hanife asks Handan, didn’t you teach your daughter any manners? Handan says Hanife is annoying her and orders her to bring her fruit and water and do it quickly.

Hanife cautions her, calamity follows you wherever you go. I just have to wait. I think you’ve forgotten. I have information about you. I know what your brat did to the family, but the bomb is that you brought Reyyan and Miran together to save Azat. If that was to slip out, nothing could save you from Zehra and Hazar’s fury. Handan tries to interrupt but Hanife is not finished. She asks Handan, what about your sweet Yaren? If she found out you were behind Miran and Reyyan’s union, she’d get revenge on you. She’d destroy her own mother. [I believe that!]

Handan asks, what do you get out of treating me so horribly? [besides pleasure?] Hanife ignores that and continues, what about Azat? If he found out, he’d spend the rest of his life hating his mother. So tell me, who will protect you from me? Your husband? The man who struts through the streets proudly expecting his baby. Or will it be my beloved Nasuh? Tell me.

Handan stands up to Hanife, it’s better if you be honest with me. What are you up to? Aren’t you ashamed of doing this to a pregnant woman who’s only concern is her children’s happiness? Hanife snaps back, I’m tired of being patient. I’m marrying Nasuh and you will help me. I want to see you in action, I want results. We will be family soon, don’t make me your enemy. Ha, as Hanife walks away, Handan throws water in her direction.

Cihan arrives home and Handan makes a beeline to him, she’s all sweetness and light. He has some news for her. But first she makes a sympathy play about how the pregnancy has made her swollen and ugly. Cihan moves in close and tells her, Handan my love, if only you could see your beauty through my eyes [how sickening these two are]. Now, what is the news you have, Cihan? Nothing yet, he answers, but something might happen soon. Handan is dying to know. Cihan looks around to make sure no one is listening in. He whispers, along with the baby, we’ll have a bride in the house.

The convo is interrupted by Hazar returning to the house. He looks upset. Cihan asks what’s wrong. Hazar says he’s not feeling well. Cihan replies, don’t worry, our problems will soon end. Cihan says let’s have some coffee. And Hazar stands there, puzzled.

Herc #49 part 3

Sultana and Gonul have gone out shopping. Gonul starts to complain about the heat. She suggests getting something to drink. Sultana is not in the mood. She complains that Gonul forced her to go shopping. Let’s go home, she tells her daughter. Gonul says she doesn’t want to go home. She came out to de-stress. Being locked up was driving her crazy. She asks again, can we sit someplace?

Sultana is annoyed. You’ve changed so much, Gonul. I can barely recognize you. You befriended your husband’s new wife very quickly. Gonul shoots back, don’t be ridiculous. I’m looking out for our own interests. Otherwise, we will be living in a dumpster. Sultana responds, your grandmother tried her best to turn you into her. Now you are Azize’s perfect granddaughter. Gonul says she’s not Azize’s granddaughter. I’m your daughter, she tells Sultana, and you know how much I love you. Now let’s go sit. Sultana gives in, where should we go? [We know just the place…]

Azat is anxiously waiting for Reyyan at the inn. Here she comes. They sit at a table. Azat asks her if she had any problems. Did anyone try to stop her? No, she answers, Elif told me you wanted to talk. She said you would come to the mansion if I didn’t come. I was worried, he tells her, I lost my mind when I heard you’d been kidnapped. Who were those people? What did they want from you? Reyyan doesn’t know. Did they hurt you, Azat asks? No, they didn’t touch me, she says, I was scared but I’m okay. Azat is relieved.

People at the inn are starting to notice Rey and Azat and they start talking. “That’s Reyyan, right?”

Azat wanted to talk and clear up things in person. Reyyan says they already spoke when he came to the mansion. True, Azat says, but he (Miran) and his grandmother were there. You said what they wanted to hear. How many times have do I have to tell you this isn’t true, she responds.

Azat starts to get agitated and raises his voice, that man yelled at you! I could strangle him right now! An older man looks over at them. Reyyan cautions Azat, don’t ever say that again. That place is my home. Have you forgotten I married Miran? He is my husband. Azat can’t believe she married a man who’s done so many bad things. He asks, what did he threaten you with? Did he threaten to kill your parents or Gul? I need to know the truth, he insists, who do you protect?

As others keep looking on and commenting, Reyyan tells Azat to lower his voice. She says she is not protecting anyone. I wanted to marry him. I came to tell you the truth so you would understand. After this, I’m going home to my husband. Azat still won’t believe her, I know you are hiding something. Every day I’m afraid someone might hurt you. If I let you stay with that man, you’ll die! Reyyan looks around and notices the people noticing them.

Azat is undeterred. I let you go once, and horrible things happened to you. You suffered and so did I. I won’t leave you with them. He gets up from the table and tells her, we’re going home now. Let’s go. Cousin, please stop saying those things, Reyyan asks. She tells him, I’m in love with Miran. Those words echo in Azat’s head. Reyyan adds, I feel safe by his side. He protects me and does things to make me happy. Why don’t you understand? Azat sits back down.

A man comments at another table, they are Nasuh’s grandchildren, right? Another man answers, that’s right—Reyyan and Azat.

dondi356

Herc #49 part 4

Reyyan continues, I’m in that mansion because I want to be. I chose him and married him. How can I make you understand? Azat looks like it’s finally sinking in. She tells him, I don’t want you to be sad, but I can’t control my heart. It’s true, she admits, Miran did terrible things to me, but he’s also been through a lot. And despite that, we fell in love. You know, it’s impossible to tame a heart in love. Azat knows. He says his heart is the same. Reyyan asks him to never say these things again. He is like a brother to her. He always has been and always will be. And at that moment, Sultana and Gonul appear in the doorway of the café.

The ladies are shocked to see Reyyan with Azat. Sultana proclaims it’s a scandal. Look at that vibora, she doesn’t care what everyone thinks about our family. Gonul says she doesn’t think anything is going on between them, but they must be up to something. How do you know, Sultana replies, they might be friends, but this is inappropriate. A married woman shouldn’t be in a café with another man, especially when that man broke into her house and tried to take her away.

Sultana wants to confront them but Gonul pulls her back. If Miran finds out, there will be blood. So I should let her embarrass us, Sultana asks? Miran must know the truth. Tell him the woman who stole him away from you is betraying him. Gonul won’t do that. Sultana accuses her daughter of protecting the enemy. Gonul replies, he won’t find out through us. He’ll find out who she really is, but I won’t tell him anything. Let’s go home before someone sees us. Sultana relents but says, I hope you are not making the biggest mistake of your life. They leave.

Reyyan tells Azat she has to go. Okay, Azat tearfully says, it’s clear to me. If you say no one forced you and you still want to be with him, I’ll let it be. I understand. Reyyan says, listen, I love you and you know that. I want you to promise me something. That you will stop hurting yourself, and that you will remove me from your heart. Promise?

Azat laughs, how do I do that? Were you able to? When your parents asked you to do the same, were you able to forget him? And now you ask me to completely destroy my world. You couldn’t do it, so don’t ask it of me. Reyyan wipes her tears. Azat says he will drive her home, but Reyyan wisely says she will go by herself. He can hardly look at her. “Allah’a emanet ol”, Reyyan (he entrusts her to God), Azat says, I will always be here for you, don’t forget that. If you ever need me, just call me. I’ll be destroyed, but I will come for you. He leaves. Now everyone at the café is looking. She leaves, too.

Poor Azat staggers through the streets, crying. Reyyan’s words replay in his head. He can’t continue and leans against a wall and sobs.

Later that day and what do you know, Nasuh and Yusuf show up at the same café where Reyyan and Azat had their talk. Many of the patrons come over to Nasuh to greet him and he thanks them. Nasuh and Yusuf sit and order coffee. Yusuf says, I told you, friend, people love you. I told you not to close yourself off. You still have friends. They do their best to welcome you. Even the merchants have missed you. Nasuh is feeling very good about this. He says, I’m grateful to them, they respect me.

Nasuh tells Yusuf, Azize thought she could keep me in captivity but she’s wrong. With my latest strike, she will know who the Sadoglu are. If my plan works, I’ll be the happiest man on Earth. Nasuh’s good feeling doesn’t last long. He looks around and finds people staring in his direction. The older man (his name is Şehmus) who was in the café earlier comes over to Nasuh and greets him. Nasuh invites him to sit and have a coffee with them. Nasuh notices that Şehmus is troubled and asks what is wrong.

dondi356

Herc #49 part 5

Nasuh Bey, we’ve known each other for a long time, Şehmus says, I see you here and it seems like you haven’t heard. I don’t want to gossip but… you need to know. What is it? About an hour ago, your grandkids were here. Which ones? Azat and Reyyan, and they talked for a while. Azat didn’t care that people were around. He said something like,” you’re coming with me” and then they left together. You know how people are. Nasuh begins to look around, worried. Şehmus adds, they might tell you things to upset you. That’s why I wanted to talk to you first.

Cut to dinner at the Aslanbey konak. Sultana stares at Reyyan and starts in. Sra. Azize, what is the difference between the house in Kars and this one? In Kars, we had decency, good manners. We used to have them here, but not anymore. Elif asks, who has bad manners? MYOB, Sultana answers, I’m talking to the HAG. Miran speaks up, Elif has a point. Are you upset, Miran, Sultana asks? HAG asks Sultana to watch her words, this is the Aslanbey konak. We have decency and good manners here. If anyone disrespects our customs, they will pay.

Sultana answers, you always threaten me. You never recognize when I do good things. You don’t value me. I wasn’t even 30 when I became a widow. I was still very young. [She looks at Miran or Reyyan, I can’t tell] Yet, I never embarrassed my family like others do.

Miran slaps his hand on the table. I’m sick of your insinuations! Why don’t you just say who you’re talking about? Sultana answers, why don’t you ask your wife. Azize steps in, if you saw or heard something, I suggest you speak directly and clearly. No more intrigue. Sultana is ready. I saw something with my own two eyes. I’m not slandering anyone. Miran should ask his wife, she says. Miran shoots a look at Reyyan and she gives him a worried look in return. Sultana says, she is the sinvergüenza who humiliated us in the middle of Midyat. [Here we go…]

Sultana turns to Miran, ask your wife how she could meet with the man to whom she was once engaged. She’s the one who displayed a lack of morals by meeting with her ex, especially when her husband forbade it. Go ahead and ask her to explain.

Everyone waits for Miran to explode. Azize asks, is this true? Miran gets up and goes over to Reyyan. Worried Elif steps in, cousin, don’t. Listen to Reyyan, I beg you. Miran responds, there’s nothing left to discuss. Azize says, I asked a question, Reyyan, answer me. Did you meet with your cousin? A pause, and then Reyyan answers… I did.

Azize rises from her chair, and you’re shameless enough to admit it! No one cares how you behaved in your father’s home, but here you must show good morals and respect our customs! You will not stain my family with your improper behavior! I won’t allow it!

Reyyan begins to get up and Miran shouts, Reyyan! We get a flashback to see the remainder of the scene at the side of the road. After Reyyan got up, Miran follows her. He says, it’s not that I don’t trust you, Reyyan. I don’t trust that… bastard Azat. Miran sighs, fine, do what you will. Talk to him. Do it one last time and get him out of your life. I never want to hear his name again. She hugs Miran. I won’t let my hatred and anger hurt you, he tells her, I’ll never let that happen. You will be my only love for the rest of my life. End flashback.

Miran directs Reyyan to say nothing. You don’t have to explain anything to anyone. Even as your husband I won’t ask for any. I trust you. The Aslanbeys look surprised. Miran calls for everyone’s attention. You will all listen to me, he says, this isn’t an explanation, ladies, but a warning. For as long as you live, don’t ever talk to my wife like that again! I am aware of the meeting she had with her cousin Azat. Elif gasps. Miran continues, she explained it to me, I listened, and I agreed to the meeting. I trust my wife with my life.

Herc #49 part 6

Reyyan is smiling now. Miran adds, if any of you suggest anything like this again about Reyyan, you will have to leave this house. I’ll say this one time. Never again. Miran holds his hand out to Reyyan and says, let’s go out to eat. They have lost their manners. Oh, the sick looks on the faces of Azize, Sultana and Gonul. [Afiyet olsun, you suckers!]

Azize goes to her room and Gonul follows. What do you want, Gonul, Azize asks? For you to keep your word, she replies, I did everything you told me to do. I took my mother to that café so she could see Azat and Reyyan. I’m doing all that is necessary to get what I want, I even got my mother involved. When do I receive my reward?

Azize answers, don’t you get tired of asking the same thing? I’m tired of you. We talk about the same things and I give you the same answers. Azize turns away. Gonul says she’s sick too. Sick of following orders and constantly losing because of them, and watching your little games fall apart one by one.

Azize recalls the note she received “it’s time you paid for the lives you took with your little games, Azize Aslanbey.” Is she suspecting Gonul? She turns to face Gonul and says, I hope you are not stupid enough to threaten your grandmother. If you can’t tell me to my face, I assume you are plotting with someone else. Now, answer me. Who’s helping you?

Only me and my brother, Gonul says. If I find my brother despite your will, you will have nothing to manipulate me with. So give me what I want or I will destroy everything in my path when I begin my search. Gonul leaves her with something to think about. Azize has to sit. She hurts her hand somehow, I’m not clear on how this happened. She says, may this thorn that has hurt you remind you of the pain your enemies are putting you through, Azize.

Looks like the HAG is having a panic attack. She can’t catch her breath. She leaves her room for air. Esma finds her gasping and follows her as she climbs the stairs. What’s wrong, Señora? Gonul comes out of her room and sees this.

Esma has caught up to Azize and asks if they should go to the hospital. No, Azize says, not necessary. She asks Esma for water.

Hazar and Zehra have tea out on the patio. Nasuh’s car comes speeding in. Nasuh gets out and starts shouting for Azat. Where is Azat! What now, asks Hazar. Nasuh shouts, Azat met with your bastard child at a café in the middle of town for everyone to see! That’s unacceptable! Melike looks from a window and Hanife runs outside. Yusuf goes to his friend’s side.

Zehra panics, Hazar, we must do something. We must go and get her. If the Aslanbeys find out they will punish her. Nasuh stops them. That woman won’t come into this house! If she does, I will not be silent [he’s threatening to tell that Hazar is not her father]. Zehra snaps back, don’t you dare threaten me! I’d rather tell her than let you do it! Enough! You’ll never use our daughter to threaten us again! She should know anyway! [it’s about time!]

While Azize recovers out on the balcony, Gonul slips into her room. She rifles through Azize’s belongings. She opens a chest and finds some papers. They look like legal documents. An envelope falls out. It looks old. Gonul takes out the paper and reads it. She is stunned. Then she says, Esma isn’t his mother?

And we are out.

Dondi, I may be repeating myself, but you might have an alternate career as a screenwriter. Just a wonderful, thorough recap. Thank you so much for all the details.

I never suspected that Gonul was put up to the accidental meeting in Midyat by the HAG.

I thought what happened to her hand was that, in her desperation at seeing things beginning to slip from her control, she got a large splinter in her hand from the chair in her room.

I was relieved to see that Azat finally accepted the truth. It hurt him a lot, but he should now be on the way to falling for Elif!

The scene with Yusuf and Nasuh in the patio was interesting. I suppose we are to assume that this takes place right after the meeting with the men in that conference room. Nasuh suggested they get a coffee in Midyat. Men kept coming up to him and almost bowing to him with respect. I think he’s probably a much better person to his male acquaintances than to his immediate family. It was nice of the older gentleman to clue him in about the gossip that was about to bubble up.

Well, they certainly fooled me, unless there was more in the Turkish version, I had no idea Miran had given his permission for her to meet Azat until Miran’s outburst.

Well…it kind of looks like our crockpot theory about Firat being Sultana’s son is coming to pass. We’ve suspected this for a while. And I thought the theory was reinforced by the included scenes of Sultana talking to Firat as if he were a kitchen helper. When she finds out, she'll be mortified by this.

Are they trying to say that Hanife is actually in love with Nasuh? I suppose I thought she just wanted power and nice clothes.

I seem to have forgotten how Handan and Cihan conspired to get Reyyan with Miran.

I am bracing myself for when Nasuh lights into Azat for the meeting with Reyyan. But, maybe it won’t happen because Azat holds the key to destroying his grandfather’s relationship with Hazar by revealing his plan to kill Reyyan after the henna ceremony.

Yes, for Pete’s sake, will they just tell Reyyan the truth about Hazar not being her bio dad. At this point, having a husband she loves, I doubt this would cause her much pain.

Thanks very much, dondi356, for another superlative recap! You captured everything, and even supplied a bit of Turkish. And I very much enjoyed your asides, such as '"We know just the place" and "It's about time!" Yes, it was clear that Gonul and Sultana would wind up at the Inn while Reyyan and Azat are there. What surprises me is that these characters don't seem to learn. For example, why does neither Reyyan nor Azat realize that meeting in such a public place in a town that lives for gossip might cause problems? And since everyone seems to overhear everyone else, why doesn't Reyyan at least stand away from the door and the window and speak in a low voice when she calls Azat? The only answer seems to be that doing so would shorten the novela.

So is an imminent wedding for Yaren back in the picture?

For once I cheered at something Zehra does. I loved her defying Nasuh and ignoring his threat to tell Reyyan the truth about her parentage. Zehra is right--it's about time Reyyan knew. Indeed, that knowledge is long overdue IMHO.

Since Azize knows that Reyyan and Azat will meet at the Inn, she has time to act. So I'm wondering, almost assuming, that she has enlisted Sehmus (thanks, dondi356, for his name) to "reluctantly" spread the gossip. However, did Azize know that Nasuh would go to the Inn? I don't remember whose idea it was, Nasuh's or Yusuf's. If it was Yusuf's.... (Like several others here on the patio, I've been wondering for a while about the knowing looks Yusuf and Azize have exchanged. I've nonetheless been assuming he's Nasuh's buddy, but....)

The episode certainly ended with a puzzling revelation. Esma isn't whose mother? The dubbed Spanish says su madre, which of course doesn't distinguish between "his" and "hers." However, I think the only person who has Esma as a mother is Firat. And if Esma isn't Firat's mother, who is? Azize? Is that why Azize has placed all the Aslanbey assets under Firat's control? Questions to ponder over the weekend.

Your recap was simply amazing dondi356! My favorite part among so many: “Miran holds his hand out to Reyyan and says, let’s go out to eat. They have lost their manners. Oh, the sick looks on the faces of Azize, Sultana and Gonul. [Afiyet olsun, you suckers!]” I loved how Miran stood up for Reyyan and stuck it to that nest of vipers! I also love the Turkish lesson!

There were so many important discussions and you clarified everything for me with the screenwriter (thanks novelera!) prose.

There was lots of backdoor scheming in this episode that surprised me, like Miran letting Reyyan see Azat and Gonul being set up by HAG for the outdoor restaurant encounter.

Seeing HAG off her game is definitely Friday night cliff hanger worthy! Except of course for knowing that Esma most likely adopted Firat.

I feel bad for Azat, but now he can indeed fall into the arms of Elif!

I hope Miran can fix the seashell. Thank you again dondi356 for this great recap!

Thank you, everyone. I thought this was a very good episode. Meaningful interactions. No guns, less hysterics, although we did get a bug-eyed mini-rant from Zehra near the end. Someone please get her assertiveness training. I think it’s unlikely she will follow through with telling Reyyan at this point.

Reyyan is coming into her own. She handled the conversations with Miran and Azat very well.

If there is one character in this dizi that deserves an HEA, it’s Azat. It looks like Elif will be in his future with an outside chance of a pairing with Gonul. I hope he makes it to the end.

I thought the accidental meeting was just that as well, novelera. A TN trope. But I guess it’s what we should expect from the HAG. You’re probably right about a splinter from the chair but that arm rest didn’t look so worn as to produce a splinter. And I agree that the café scene was interesting. Image and respect mean everything to people like Nasuh. Boy did he get a shock.

Yes, Juanita, it was terribly stupid for Rey and Azat to meet in a very public place. And that’s the way the writers wanted it! Anyway, if they met somewhere more private and were discovered, that would have caused greater problems for Rey and Azat, especially with Miran. And we wouldn’t have had that delicious dinner scene at the Aslanbey konak.

It seems that Yaren’s wedding to the Pasha’s son has been put on hold. Juanita, if you are referring to what Cihan said to Handan, I believe he was speaking about Elif becoming a Sadoglu bride.

VVS, I’m hoping that soon Miran will take Reyyan away to the sea so she can find her own replacement shell.

As for Gonul’s discovery at the end, we will get more info on Monday. It was a little spoilerish looking at the Turkish. I think VVS will have a good ep to recap!

Thank you, dondi356.

I loved the dinner table scene. And the writers set it up very well. Everybody had a hidden card to play in that game. HAG, Gonul - on one side of the table, Reyyan, Miran on the other. It was satisfying seeing HAG lose this round. And the one that was played was Sultana.

I don't know why Reyyan meeting Azat in a cafe is such a big deal. How is it an affront to the decency of the Aslanbey family or the Sadogly family? Why would anybody care except Miran? And didn't HAG (or Gonul or Sultana) think that Reyyan would talk to Miran about it before meeting Azat? It was risky to accuse her of indecency. It could backfire and it did. Sloppy scheming.

Hercai

Dondi, thank for every detail as the drama rolls onward. Moran and Reyyan are a cute couple . Moran just had to learn to simmer down a little . Tip : Still watered deep. ...still.

I am hoping the yelling and gunpointing gets gets dialed back.

I read that the Turkish actors are not unionized and sometimes work as long as 16 hours a day . Yikes ....these folks must go home exhausted from all the intense scenes and screaming .

herc

Lucio, I agree. But apparently there are some cultural rules that seem very odd to those of us on the patio. It appears that a married woman is never to be seen in public with any man except her husband, even if he's a first cousin!

It wasn't just Sultana that felt free to castigate Reyyan for sitting at a table with her cousin. Nasuh felt the same. Both seemed to feel that Reyyan had dishonored their families by her behavior.

Also, given Miran's almost pathological jealousy of Azat, I don't think it would have occurred to any of these schemers (Azize, Gonul, and Sultana) that Reyyan could have gone there with Miran's knowledge. So...they thought they had a trump card to put a wedge between the two. And...as you said, it backfired.

Herc

Lucio, I’ve seen enough of this type of dizi, so these reactions are no surprise for me. novelera offered a good explanation. Let’s add that people also knew Azat and Reyyan were previously engaged and almost married. Note that Nasuh was very angry with Azat.

And seeing Miran’s “almost pathological jealousy”, reminded me of Embajador and the Sancar-Nare-Gediz triangle. How many times did Sancar threaten to kill Gediz if he came near Nare? I lost count.

Hi Susanlynn, I’m glad you are following Hercai. Even if you can’t watch every day, we have a solid group of recappers who can keep you current. BTW, I’ve heard the same things about the Turkish entertainment industry. Are you still watching Fatmagül?

dondi356

Herc

Thank you, novelera and dondi356 for the explanation. With Reyyan, unless you really keep track, it could be confusing who she is married to or who she is going to marry. If you miss one or two gossips, you may think that she is not married to Miran, or that she is getting married to Azat. The town's people, though, seem to be all up to date.

OT..Hi, Dondi, yes , I am still piecing together Fatmagul . Thank you so much for recommending it. It is a fascinating and uplifting love story and look into the Turkish culture . I look at my 2 scarves that a Turkish student gave me years ago with a new perspective . After jumping around from the middle to the start to the end , I have now started following the Turkish episodes and matching them to the excellent recaps on Caray. I am currently in #152 which caray recappers refer to as Turkish #73 and US#76. Confusing but I figured it out. I am at the point where we are approaching the end with all the drama mixed with every day life and all the emotions and experiencestbst go with it . It is the best telenovela I have ever watched and will look for other shows with Engin who makes me believe everything he says, does, and feels .

OT - Susanlynn

There are 80 Turkish eps for Fatmagül. Don’t know if you already watched it but Turkish ep #74 is the wedding and it is very eventful.

And if you want more Engin, you should watch Kara Para Aşk/Black Money Love on Netflix. IIRC, you wrote you already watched one episode. Very different from Fatmagül, but also very good. The chemistry between Engin and Tuba is off the charts. Hard to believe they weren’t a couple IRL. A lot of hardcore, worldwide KPA fans out there who waited for them to work together again, and we will see them both in season 3 of Embajador!

dondi356

OT..Dondi, I am almost at the wedding , but I must admit that I had already jumped ahead into it. However, now I know all the events that led up to it in the right order.I like the way this show mixing the everyday ( buying firniture, making meals, renovating a house, learning to drive) with The drama and tragedies . The music selections are wonderful as are the scenes of Turkey . Compelling . I will go back to Kara Para Ask as soon as I watch the finale .

Do you have any idea when Embajador will return to Uni ?

I love the way miran protects his reyyon. She has never ever been protected like that in That house of horrors she was raised in. How
Hazar can watch his daddy beat his child like is beyond me. I'd be all o er that monopoly baldhead so fast
And he would let momma do another. To hell with customs, that is just ridiculous. Miran is my hero. With
Anger management problems, but that
Is an easy fix. Therapy and reyyon.
