La herencia, #18 Monday, 08/08/22 The kiss that makes the world go numb

This is two thirds recapping one third ranting... it was that kind of an episode.

Juan and Pedro are fighting about Tadeo, with the other siblings as witnesses. When Juan tells Pedro that he’s not the kind of father Tadeo needs, Pedro gets offended, says “forget about what we talked earlier, now I know how you really feel” and leaves. Sara asks Juan to give his brother some time, Juan says he has to talk to Bea.

Deb starts to tell Rosa a sob story about how the Del Montes threw her out of the house. But she asks a French press coffee first, which is made to sound very fancy, but it’s actually something you can buy at IKEA for 10 Euros (I’ve had a few over the years, I actually have one next to the computer as I’m typing this). Rosa goes to prepare the coffee (she has no clue how to do that), leaving Deb with Prospi. He begs her to go, afraid that Jess might arrive. Deb goes in for a kiss just when Alondra and Julieta arrive, at the same time with Rosa coming back from the kitchen, carrying a tray with a Turkish looking pot (very popular in Eastern Europe, where it’s called an ibrik).

Pedro is pointing the rifle at his mirror image for a while, tears in his eyes. Then he has a vision of Mama Catalina, telling him he always kept to himself as a child, never truly opening up to anyone and she wonders if they were ever able to make him realize how much he meant to them. With her husband and Juan they tried to give him all the love in the world, but the love he is desperately  searching for is in front of him. Suddenly waking up from his fantasy, Pedro conveniently sees that Sara has put an arm on his shoulder – he turns to her, still crying, hugs her and says he only wants his son.

Deb is telling the Millan family how that awful man (Juan) separated her from her daughter. Rosa invites her to stay with them as much as she needs to, while the girls and Prospi try to protest. But nevermind that, because here comes Jessica with her… wait for it… new husband. All the reactions are what you should expect (Rosa “faints”), but Deb’s is the best, she is enjoying this almost as much as the Patio. When the family starts to question the marriage, Jess says she’s leaving the house, she’s going to live with Bryan and his family. Rosa faints again.

Modesto asks Juan what is going on with Pedro and Tadeo, but Juan doesn’t answer, he’s in a hurry to go see his brother. In the meanwhile, in his room, Pedro tells Sara that he is sure he will be a better father than the one who abandoned him. He never loved anyone as much as he loves his son. Sara tries to comfort him, holding his face in her palms and the scene is pretty meaningful, especially since I see some pretty intense CHEMISTRY flowing between these two in a moment that is not supposed to be romantic. Leave it to Juan to ruin everything by showing up and asking to talk to Pedro. Sara leaves.

Pedro calls Juan a traitor, Juan asks him to keep this from Modesto, the man who has taken so much care of them. Pedro is upset because Juan is more worried about Modesto than about him, doesn’t feel like he owes the old man anything since he never asked him anything. Juan can’t understand why Pedro always pushes away the people who love him, he hopes he will not end up alone. This actually impresses Pedro.

Paloma has come to visit Simon, she runs to his arms, happy that everything is OK now. Sara is also there and tells Simon she is also content and he sarcastically replies everything is now allll better in spite of her. Paloma defends Sara, telling him that she is her friend. Simon actually asks Paloma not to be friends with Sara, but she says he can’t ask her that. Sara doesn’t want to cause friction between them, she just wishes to speak to Paloma for a bit. Paloma gladly accepts and they both go away, leaving Simon on the verge of what it looks like another one of his tantrums.

In Severiano’s study, Dante is on the phone with Deb, telling her she complicated everything with her behavior. When she finds out where he is, she asks about the boys’ adoption papers – more exactly, Simon’s!! She hangs up and then goes to “comfort” Rosa who is going through such a tragedy. She is afraid of what will people say? What has she done wrong? How can she drag her daughter back home?Deb pretends she wants to leave, go find some place to be all by her lonesome, so Rosa says that she can definitely live with them. Deb agrees, and asks Alondra to take care of her bags. LOL

Dante is searching through some drawers in the study when Juan walks in, demanding to know why he didn’t warn him about what Pedro was planning to do. Dante says he has always followed the family's orders, but Pedro asked him for a personal favor. Juan says he has to know everything concerning his brothers, professional or personal, he won’t tolerate any more secrets. I know Juan is supposed to be the good guy, but he’s a bit much – his brothers are all grown men and they have the right to make as many stupid mistakes as they like. Of course Pedro is up to no good but Juan comes off as such a control freak. Not a good look – just my opinion.

Pedro is alone, reminiscing about a time he and Juan were younger, playing with Severiano, who asks them to call him papa. Pedro has no problem doing it, but Juan is struggling, so Severiano encourages him, by saying that he will be his brothers’ leader – child Pedro takes note – as I suspected, the distance between the brothers was caused by Severiano treating them differently – putting Juan above all the others. Back to the present day Pedro thought-bubbles that Juan was always their father’s favorite – his resentment tangible. I’m probably not supposed to feel this way, but I’m with Pedro here, can I go nuts and root for the villan, at least until he starts murdering people? (Cornelio doesn’t count, he’s too annoying).

Sara is telling Paloma that Pedro told the family about Tadeo being his son. Paloma calls Bea to warn her – be careful in case Cornelio shows up. Adela arrives to talk to Sara, so Paloma goes to be with Simon (good luck with that!). Adela asks Sara if she can help her find a job and Sara says she can definitely work at the ranch as she used to in the past, but she’d like to help her get her shop back, too. Adela asks if they need Juan’s permission, but Sara says there is no need for that, she authorizes it and she is the patrona, too.

Dante says he helped Pedro out of loyalty for the entire family, how was he supposed to know they didn’t know about it? He could never say no if one of the brothers asked for his legal help. Juan says he would never ask him to deny them help, he just needs to know what is going on beforehand. Dante promises never to do that again and Juan asks him to leave. Is it bad that I find the other villan of the story to have better arguments than the galan? I get where Juan is coming from, he’s had so much pressure to become the frikin’leader of the family and to fill Great Severiano’s sainted shoes, but he comes across as a control freak, I don’t know if it’s the writing or the acting, but he needs to turn it down a notch.

Sara is outside in the garden, combing her hair with her fingers when Lucas comes running – he feels super bad about her mom, what a shame things turned out this way. Sara thinks it was unavoidable, Lucas hopes Juan can solve the mess their family has become. Sara says what is happening is too much for a person to deal with all on their own, everyone has to cooperate (finally, someone with a bit of common sense), but Lucas thinks Juan is rattled because of her and that’s why he can’t figure out how to solve their problems (no wonder Juan is going crazy, trying to control everything, since everyone is expecting him to do just that).

In their room Prospi tells Rosa that he doesn’t like it at all that Deb is staying with them, but Rosa sees this as a way to save face: when people in town will find out about Jess marrying Bryan the only thing that can help their reputation will be the fact that the grand Deborah Portilla is staying at their house. Alondra walks in to complain about having to leave her room and share with her sister Julieta because, says Rosa, the guest room is too small for Deb. Prospi tries to convince Rosa to support Jess because the more they protest, the worse it will get for them, but Rosa thinks the Cruz family is to blame, they are after Jess’ inheritance (“what inheritance” Alondra asks). And they should go and bring their daughter back home, kicking and screaming.

Pedro and Dante meet outside the house. The lawyer is upset because Juan scolded him, but Pedro couldn’t care less, he wants to go fetch Tadeo. Dante remembers Juan’s warning not to hide him things, but Pedro says “you are working for me”.

Adela arrives home and tells her father that Sara helped her find a job at the ranch – what a good person she is. Augie agrees, she’d make a great pair with Juan! Adela asks about her sons – Brandon is in his room, upset over his break-up and Bryan has to be outside with that girl he’s crazy over.

Jess is upset her father never stands up for them in front her mother. Bryan is upset his mom won’t be very happy with the news, either . They feel like Romeo and Juliet.

Simon is ranting to Modesto and Paloma about demonic Sara. Mateo is the only one who agrees, but he thinks Deb is worse than her daughter. Modesto is worried about the conflict between Cornelio and Pedro, but Simon says Deb is to blame for that, too!

Sara is still outside, in the garden, when Juan arrives to tell her he and Pedro couldn’t come to an agreement. Does she think less of him now? No worries, Sara thinks he’s a strong man, but does he think she’s a bad woman? Juan grabs her hands and says what he thinks of her is that she’s the woman of his dreams, the one who has arrived to change his life

Cornelio and Tadeo arrive home and Bea is upset they are so late. Cornelio asks why did she allow Pedro to leave with the boy and Tadeo explains that tio Pedro gave him a gift at the ranch – then, turning to his mother asks if this too is a secret, or can he tell his dad about it? Bea is barely breathing, while Cornelio asks Tadeo about the other secret he is keeping. She tries to take the kid to another room, for a nap, but Cornelio screams that Tadeo never took a nap in his life and he demands to know about the secret.

Lucas comes to warn Mateo, Simon and Paloma that Pedro is not in his room (imagine that, a grown man left the house without warning the entire family). They are all afraid he went to Bea’s house to do something crazy (one can only wish).

Juan tells Sara that he felt odd when he saw her with Pedro. Sara says his brother needs some TLC, he’s a lonely person, but the only man who has her heart is him. She touches his upper arm, slowly descending towards his hands, adding that her life has been so hard, having him near is what gives her strength. They hold hands, as she says that she’s also very afraid, but Juan doesn’t want to be afraid of love, he can take care of her. Sara says she never accepted for a man to take care of her, but with him she learned about respect and equality, she wants to take care of him, too. He kisses her hand, says I love you, she smiles…

Cornelio kneels in front of Tadeo, who was getting scared of his screaming, and reminds him they always shared everything and secrets are not good. Tadeo insists he can’t tell, but he can share that tio Pedro gave him a very nice horse. Why is that, Cornelio asks, barely able to keep an even voice for Tadeo’s benefit. Knock on the door, it’s Dante with daddy number two, who has come to tell Cornelio the truth. Bea quickly asks Tadeo to go upstairs. Pedro shows Cornelio the paternity test, saying that Tadeo is his son. Caras impactadas all around.

While all Hell is about to break loose for Bea, Juan admits to Sara that she has indeed changed him – all he does all day is think about her. Sara says that she thought about leaving with Deb, but then she remembered his hands, his eyes, realized she couldn’t be happy without him. “I love you” she adds and Juan swears that he will love her his entire life, too. They get closer, sniff around one another for a second and then finally kiss. And it’s like watching paint dry – plain, boring and suffering of “trying too much” syndrome. Once they are done, they decide to tell everyone about their feelings, even if they will all oppose them. Juan tells her about the talk he had with Severiano a few days before he died – the words his father told him about love didn’t mean anything to him… until the day he met her. Sara smiles and says she wants to have a life with him. More kissing and snuggling, it’s so hot mehh…

Back to some real drama and emotion, Cornelio asks Bea to explain him what Pedro is talking about. Bea apologizes, he accuses her of lying all this time and Pedro of wanting to take away what he loves most. Pedro says Tadeo is his son, his blood, but Cornelio rips the DNA proof into shreds and tells Pedro that he doesn’t care about that, Tadeo is his son. Cornelio points out that blood does not make one a father and Pedro should know this better than anyone. So Pedro decides to play dirty (didn’t take him long), what can Cornelio offer Tadeo in the misery he lives in? He has a name, money, Tadeo will be his. Close up of their raging eyes.

Brandon is upset because of Dulce…. Enter Bryan, who gets a bit of scolding for being outside the house all day. But Bryan has a surprise … and in comes Jessica, the new wife. Ay!! Adela gets upset, does Rosa know? Jess says it’s her life, but Adela is afraid of the scandal Rosa will make. She demands to talk to her son alone.

Juan and Sara are walking hand in hand and smiling, when Lucas calls for his brother. Sara quickly removes her hand to Juan’s frustration, but then Lucas tells them Pedro has left, God knows where, so Juan and Sara run to the car.

Rosa wants to go take her daughter, who is probably kept againts her wish. Prospi disagrees, so Rosa sks the keys of the car, but he tries to postpone the moment – he will go with her but he needs to speak to Julieta first. He finds his daughter in the bedroom, wants to share a moment with her, realizes that she’s sad over her break-up. Julieta says she’s certain this too shall pass, Juan will get over Sara in no time and be back with her. Prospi thinks it can’t be so easy, maybe she should even find a different job, put some distance between Juan and her. But Julieta insists that Juan loves her and he will realize it sooner or later. Prospi is surprised of how sure of her she is, if only he could be the father she deserves. She thinks that he is, asks about the day he and mom met… so he starts telling her about how he fell in love with her singing voice.

Adela and Bryan talk in her room (with Augie, Jess and Brandon eavesdropping behind the closed door). She was never against his relationship, but how could they do what they did? Love is the most important thing, but love doesn’t pay the bills and Jess is used to a life of luxury. Bryan says he already has a better paying job, but Adela points out he hasn’t even gotten his first salary yet; besides, where do they plan to live? As expected, Bryan wants Jess to live with them until his first pay. Adela thinks he’s taking advantage of her, so he reminds her they are family, insists it will only be for a short while, just don’t throw them out. Adela hesitates, then says that if they are brave enough to get married, they should be able to handle being on their own, too. Besides Rosa will blame her for everything. But… if that awful human being rejected them, she won't do the same thing, they will always find shelter with her. She kisses Bryan's forehead and opens the door, catching the others in the act. Then she warns Bryan and Jessica they need to prepare for what is coming.

Bertha comes to Salvador’s bar and asks for a double tequila. Deb arrives too, asking for a triple and taking a seat next to Bertha, who is all but happy to see her. Salvador arrives with the drinks just in time for Bertha to make a connection and ask Salvador if Deb  is the lady he took to a hotel… Hahaha

Dante says that having the DNA proof, Pedro will get Tadeo’s custody, he is legally the father, but Cornelio couldn’t care less about DNA. Juan, Simon, Paloma and Sara arrive and Juan scolds Pedro for causing problems. Pedro is sarcastic, Simon worries about the child, Bea asks Paloma to go check on Tadeo. Then she tells Pedro that Cornelio is the father, he has no rights. Juan says Tadeo is the most important thing, so Cornelio begs him to help keep his son, he raised him since he was a baby. So Pedro mockingly asks Juan to choose a side.

Adriana, another exceptional, wry, and thoughtful recap. Great title.

Thank you for explaining “Ibrik”. Enjoyed “daddy number two” and I laughed out loud at “it’s so hot mehh…”

“…here comes Jessica with her… wait for it… new husband”. Scorned by both the Hatfields and the McCoys, there was nary a smile or a “congratulations” to be had. Not a good idea and the fallout is just as expected.

Pedro needed psychiatric help as much or even more than Simon and Pedro. A grown man, continually brought to tears by the memories of his wounded childhood, is proof positive he is still tortured and suffering. And now, the opportunity to purge his demons and somehow right the wrongs he suffered has appeared – in the form of his son. Instead of thinking things through, he decided he must move to claim immediate “ownership” of his child. He is cognizant of but chooses to ignore that he is ripping Bea’s heart out of her chest and devastating Cornelio, Tadeo’s father in every sense of the word. I really felt for Bea torn between her abusive husband and the man that she loved who betrayed her and tossed her aside. Poor Tadeo didn’t understand fully what was going on but realized that he best not tell Cornelio the “secret”. I gather it was that Pedro said he was his father (please let me know if I’m wrong).

Pedro clearly doesn’t care what happens when he brings Tadeo to the ranch and how much heartache this will cause for Modesto. The cruelest cut is that Pedro has no thought for Tadeo himself. The psychological torment that will be thrust upon the boy being ripped from the only home and family he’s ever known. “So Pedro decides to play dirty (didn’t take him long), what can Cornelio offer Tadeo in the misery he lives in? He has a name, money, Tadeo will be his” summed it up perfectly.

Sara wiping Pedro’s tears was hot. The heat spoke volumes and (sadly) at a higher decibel than the Sara/Juan lip lock. I am rooting for Sara and Juan but their kissing needs to be far more convincing.

The few bright moments were Deb’s glee and facial expressions at seeing the happy couple. Also, Rosa’s expected reaction. Prospi trying to comfort Juli. Paloma standing up to Pedro and defending her friendship with Bea.

Adriana, thank you for noting all the details and relating them so exceptionally.

Diana

Diana, thank you for your quick reply and for such kind words!
I had a great time reading your commentary on Pedro, you were spot on! And YES! That was some effortless chemistry between Sara and Pedro, but I found her convo with Juan forced.

The secret poor Tadeo was trying to keep was the one about the DNA test - when Bea had told him they had to run some more tests to make sure he was OK after his fall. When Pedro told him he was his dad Tadeo took it so poorly that he had to backtrack and say that he loved him like a son.

I just watched this. Thank goodness it was OnDemand waiting for me this morning because last night was dedicated to “Better Call Saul” one of the best shows ever produced.

Adriana, this was an outstanding recap of a fun episode! Thanks for the extra details and info you added like info on the price of French press coffee at IKEA, etc. Your running commentary was very entertaining.

The highlight for me was Brandon playing his sad song on a harmonica. Who would have known? “Sadness + harmonica playing” must be universal.

Yay! Paloma is seeing Simón as he is most of the time being a jerk.

I know I will be in the minority but I liked the kissing scene between Juan and Sara.

Ha! Dante caught skulking in the home office! Whoopsie!

A double and a triple tequila for Berta and Deb! Loved that scene. I wonder what they will talk about.

The more I watch this the more it seems so traditional and formulaic to the point of being stodgy. The long staring at the end of the scenes and the stiff dialogue at times are a hoot but almost seem from a different era but that is evidently just part of this “big hacienda/big rancho” storytelling style.

Diana, ITA that Pedro needs psychiatric help and will add Cornelio and Simón to that list. They are all wounded in some way and very dangerous.

Can’t wait until tonight!

UPDATE: BINGO CARD #3: ¡NO PUEDE SER! Courtesy of Bea.

Adriana - thank you for your snarktastic recap. Your title was perfect along with your subtitle "This is two thirds recapping one third ranting... it was that kind of an episode."

" but Deb’s is the best, she is enjoying this almost as much as the Patio. "
Right? Her face! That was fun to see. She would have made the popcorn for the Patio, if she had known this was coming.

Jess is in for a shock when Adela will (no doubt) expect her to help with the housework while she lives there.

Why is Deb asking for Simon's adoption papers? What does she know, or suspect? Stay tuned; must see TV!

Oh wow. The Big Secret. The DNA test. I am overwhelmed with shock. NOT!!!

"Close up of their raging eyes". I was cracking up when I saw that on the TV screen. So hokey! LOL

The actor who is Pedro is doing an excellent job with facial expressions that convey his thoughts and emotions even though I cannot stand the character.

Was last night the first time we have seen Juan smile?

Cher Adriana, merci for both the recap and the rant. I always enjoy both . C'est magnifique! A great read worth coffee (Starbucks Dark French Roast pods for me in my Keirug...no French press here. )

I guess I am alone at the Pedro table. He is being awful to everyone , but I always see that neglected , abused little boy. Pedro is a very damaged soul. It seems that Sara is the only person who can get through to him . I think he may really be falling in love with her. i agree that The scene of Sara holding his face in her hands as they gazed into each other's eyes had something deep happening that I don't see in scenes between her and Juan. ...presto Bingo ..redeem Pedro....New galan.

More later....

Great work, Adriana.

Great assessment of Pedro. He is the most complex of the five brothers as well as the hottest. I want this actor to have the top spot in his next novela.

Rosa is one of the most annoying maternal characters I have ever seen. She is playing the Sickness Card against Jessica and I don't think for a second that the fainting was real. Deborah was just as amused as we were; she sees how fake and pathetic Rosa is. It doesn't surprise me either that Julie Stepford is as delusional as her mother is.

Prospero is probably thoroughly fed up by now. He is ready to run but will be there for his daughters.

I don't think Jessica is that spoiled. It looks like Julie Stepford got most of the time invested in her, just like Juan. She would have no scruples doing something seriously dishonest with a little help from Mama to get Juan.

Rosa makes her own scandals. She has no one to blame but herself.

.....I am wondering why the eldest brother Juan and the youngest Lucas seem relatively stable while the three brothers in the middle of the pack all have anger issues . Yikes . I have been thinking about other brothers . I had brothers when I taught in a high school ,and they often had very different personalities ...sometimes there were several athletes and then one who was walking trouble . It must be exhausting for Juan, Lucas, and Modesto to constantly be putting out fires started by the three loose canons . It's interesting to see the brothers line up choosing sides when various issues arise .Perhaps , in the end, they will unite to fight Dante and Deb.

So I guess Dante was snooping in the office for adoption papers . ...which should be in a safety deposit box .I assume there are none for Juan and Pedro since Sev and Cat just took them . Pedro mentioned being a better dad than the one who abandonned him. Hmmmm..does that mean we will eventually meet his dad ?. Is It someone we already know? We have never seen his mother's face . Will we meet her? Was Dante involved in the adoptions of the other three brothers ? Wonder how much Deb and we will find out about them .

Susanlynn - thinking about these brothers, although they are all adopted, there might be something to the "birth order" dynamics in a family: Hero child, Lost child, Comedian, Black sheep. We have five sons here, but Juan is definitely the hero child for now.
Mateo might be the lost child, Pedro the black sheep, Lucas ....? None has comedian leanings, but the theory is not foolproof, either.

Fantastic recap, Adriana!

"Diana, ITA that Pedro needs psychiatric help and will add Cornelio and Simón to that list. They are all wounded in some way and very dangerous." Couldn't agree more, Jarifa.

"Why is Deb asking for Simon's adoption papers? What does she know, or suspect? Stay tuned; must see TV!" Definitely must see TV, Diana! I can't think of a reason why she would do that.
"Oh wow. The Big Secret. The DNA test. I am overwhelmed with shock. NOT!!!" LOLOL, same. This had me laughing, Diana.
"Rosa is one of the most annoying maternal characters I have ever seen." True, Urban. Deb is an awful mother too, but at least her scenes are funny and more, meaningful. Rosa just... exists and causes chaos. Not my cup of tea.

Deborah is likely to be more destructive than Rosa. She is passive/aggressive some of the time but I don't think she would be above killing her own daughter for the money if it came to that.

My mother envied me the independence I had that I never needed to lean on any man for my survival. It looks like Deborah has done that very thing for her life until now.

As for why she is targeting Simon, I think he is the most loose cannon of all. He is also intelligent and he has her number. So is Pedro and I think he will turn on her eventually.

Adriana, thank you for explaining the "secret"! Also, your "That was some effortless chemistry between Sara and Pedro" nailed that combustible mix perfectly.

"A double and a triple tequila for Berta and Deb! Loved that scene. I wonder what they will talk about". Jarifa, I smiled at this unlikely "tea party". I think this will be fun! Berta will surely get an earful, as will we. Can't wait.

"It looks like Julie Stepford got most of the time invested in her, just like Juan". Insightful Urban and very true.

Rosa is a piece of work. I laughed seeing the faux fur collar. Does she think it looks prestigious? She looks ridiculous. LOL.

Cannot wait until tonight!

Diana

Does anyone else think that someone in the wardrobe department might be colorblind? Rosa's clothes last night were the worst color combination I've seen in ages.

Urban, yes, the wardrobe department is sending us very unsubtle messages about how gauche and provincial Rosa and Pros are while dressing Deb like Catwoman in her leather \pleather attire. I get a big kick out of Berta's flowered hat , matronly sheath dresses , and umbrella. She was knocking back those shots last night. Will she and Deb stagger home drunk and disorderly to Rosa's?

Thanks, Adriana, for a fun, detailed recap. I also am wondering why she zeroed in on Simon’s adoption papers. Wasn’t he the one who saw his mom and Deb fighting before his mom collapsed? I think he was the one the mom shared a lot of information to.

I hope Deb wears out her welcome at Rosa’s. I feel sorry for Próspero. Not sure how Rosa got the idea that Deb is some kind of grand lady. Something else for Rosa to be shocked over towards the last episode!

Hoping Berta has Deb’s number and will not get chummy with her.

At the end of each show the brothers are in suits in front of an airplane. I think Lucas looks mature and good looking with the suit and sunglasses. Hope he becomes more than just the youngest brother!

Liz

Adriana: I enjoyed reading your full in-depth recap of last night's episode, plus I laughed at your title of the recap.

The Lovebirds Juan & Goldie Locks Sara FINALLY did it. All of the tension with the close-ups of them eye-googling each other made me get cranky as I was like "JUST KISS GOLDIE LOCKS ALREADY!"

UA: 100% agree with you on the wardrobe department especially Buji Rosa's attire which needs lots of makeover. I am waiting for her Karma anvil soon because she's got dirty little secrets somewhere which are bound to get exposed.

On Simon: his anger issues are quite obvious. He & Crazy Pedro are at the top of the Suspect List as far as I'm concerned.

Liz: I would like to feel sorry for Prospero, but I cannot because he was the one who couldn't control that zipper regarding Gold-Digger Debbie.
