Friday 10/7/22: Karmageddon, with a side of Guacamole: La Herencia

It's that time again! Karmageddon arrives at Santa Catalina to deal itself to the evil ones we have discussed and analyzed to a degree that Freud and Jung would applaud. The cliffhangers have been going in every direction and the evil ones have been so active that last weekend would have been almost too early for this discussion. The usual questions apply:

  • What do you think the writers will do to them?
  • What do you think they deserve?

If I have forgotten anything in the following, please advise so I can revise. This should include all data through episode 69.

Deborah Portillo / Elizabeth Alvarez

Guilty of using her sexuality to manipulate men. This especially includes adultery. Her primary motive is pure greed but there is always a heavy side order of glee at destroying families. Her daughter is the result of pregnancy entrapment and her greed has extended to demanding the entire legacy of Severiano del Monte whom we now know was not the sperm donor. This is attempted fraud on a grand scale. Also guilty of defrauding Rosa out of her business while also doing the nasty with Prospero, all while pretending to be Rosa's friend. Presumptuously moved into the hacienda and later destroyed the portrait of Severiano and Catalina. Almost fed an abortifascient to her pregnant daughter.

She has also hired thugs to assault others and attempted to kill a child whose natural father is one of the heirs to the del Monte fortune. It is surprising that her penchant for insulting others in public hasn't earned her a truly severe beating at the very least before the poisoning attempt. Her snobbery is laughable because her treatment of servants and employees is not the manner of one who is to the manor born. She has tried – and fortunately has failed – to raise her daughter to be the same as herself. She is completely without conscience. Too bad that nobody seemed to notice her resemblance to a Halloween witch.

Pedro del Monte / Daniel Elbittar

His handsome and elegant appearance hides a tortured soul deformed by abuse and the attempt on his life by his birth mother. His apparent lack of empathy and inability to love in a healthy manner could have been prevented with early intervention but instead has escalated into self-hatred and lack of respect for the brother who protected him from worse when they were children. He is guilty of business fraud, embezzlement, and attempting to frame said brother for those crimes. He has attempted to seduce the woman this brother loves and may be behind assaults suffered by others. He took advantage of Beatriz' marital troubles to seduce her thereby betraying the friendship of Cornelio. He has also used the family fortune and influence to assume custody of Beatriz' son, Tadeo, upon discovery that he is the child's biological father.

Also guilty of the torture of Victorio (leading up to his death at the hands of Dante), Brayan Cruz (who suffered trauma), and the murders of his vile mother (Aurora) and long-term accomplice (Dante). At times he appears to be conscience-stricken, but we can never be sure.

Cornelio / Diego de Erice

Guilty of domestic violence and of hiring thugs on Deborah's behalf to attack Simón del Monte. Also led Victorio's gang to invade the del Monte estate and attack the entire family, resulting in the shooting of his own father.

Simón del Monte / Emmanuel Palomares

Guilty of serious misogyny, insulting Sara's morals by accusing her of playing Juan and Pedro off against each other and blaming her for everything that went wrong after her arrival, creating public disturbances, and assault (throwing Sara out of the hacienda and into mud during a heavy rain). Also guilty of attempting to gaslight his new bride into becoming a domestic slave and of not learning the adage “Physician, heal thyself.”

Julieta Millán / Paulina Matos

Guilty of snobbery, sabotaging fertilizer used in the avocado orchard, and attempting to frame Sara for this thereby costing the del Montes' company mucho dinero. Also guilty of pregnancy entrapment against Juan using a foetus conceived through sex with Mateo, whom she also strings along even after marrying Juan. Plays the Poor Little Helpless Me act to prey upon Juan's conscience while conspiring with Pedro against Sara. Placed the burr under the saddle of an untamed horse intended as a murder weapon. Like Deborah and Rosa, also massively insulting others and showing her lack of class in so doing.

Rosa Millán / Tiaré Scanda

Guilty of unjustified snobbery, adultery, emotional abuse of others, mistreatment of servants and other perceived inferiors, being an arribista, and endless fashion felonies.

Adios and Just Let the Trapdoor Hit You on Your Way Down... to Hell

Dante / Sergio Basañez

Guilty of ongoing adultery with Deborah, pre-meditated attempt to defraud the del Monte legacy, ongoing embezzlement, and business fraud. Also guilty of engaging Aurora to further disrupt the del Monte heirs and the shooting death of Henry Miller.

Final Fate:  Tortured and murdered by Pedro.

Aurora / Lucero Lander

Guilty of prostitution, horrendous child abuse, attempted murder of Pedro and Juan, harassment of the adult Juan and Pedro, and presumptuous greed in her attempt to get the entire estate.

Final Fate: Poisoned by Pedro in the manner she had attempted to poison him.

Henry Miller / Alberto Pavón

Guilty of conspiring with Pedro to discredit Juan and take over properties belonging to the del Montes, making ugly scenes at business meetings, insulting Sara publicly, and the cold-blooded murder of the Spanish language.

Final Fate: Shot to death by Dante.

Thanks, Urban!

Okay. I am only listing what I want to see happen.

Pedro needs to die a nice and slow death so he has time to reflect on his hatred driven existence and what
could have been.

Deb needs to ride off into the sunset with some young giggolo to never be seen or heard from again.

Cornelio needs to dedicate himself to being a better man and a better role model for Tadeo.

Simón needs some heavy duty psychiatric treatment. Paloma needs to divorce him ASAP because his recovery is not assured.

Juli needs some heavy duty psychiatric treatment and to be prosecuted for falsifying documents in the meantime.

Prospi needs to divorce Rosa and give her the opportunity to survive on her own.

Urban, thank you for that marvelous Karmageddon. I loved it! It was serious with the perfect dose of funny.

I had forgotten half of these things happened (lol).

I agree with Jarifa on almost everything, but I'll change up some things.

Things I agree on

Pedro. A nice slow death would be ideal.

Big Baby Simón. He needs some serious help. I want Paloma to wake up and divorce him too.

Débora. Too funny, Jarifa! This just NEEDS to happen!

Rosa. It will be the perfect punishment for her specifically if Prospie divorces her. Can't he burn her scarves too?

What I would change

Honestly, I want Juli to die. Maybe that wild horse wants revenge.

I don't know what Corni's fate should be. He is a confusing character in general.

As for what I think the writers will do, the only thing I'm sure of is that Pedro is die. Maybe a pile of avocados will crush him or something...

I agree that Juli needs to die. Neither Sara nor Juan would be free of her otherwise. This also punishes Rosa for favoring her over her other daughters.

Simon needs a stay in a padded room. Paloma should divorce him.

Cornelio deserves to do some time. He should learn from his actions and become a better father, but not get Beatriz back. BTW he wears that same white hat in the opening credits.

I agree about Rosa. Also, if she poisoned Deborah she needs to answer for it even though Deborah is a plague upon the land. Despite all the orange she wears she will hate the prison dress code.

Pedro either needs to die painfully or be put in a facility for the criminally insane... under sedation. His fate so far is much like that of Lionel's in QT, so may as well go all the way on it.

I want Deborah to die. She should never have another opportunity to make her daughter's life more difficult or have any influence on her child. She tried to kill Tadeo and should not get away with this. However, the only thing I would want to see if she lives is for her to take down Octavio in his sequel to La Desalmada.

I usually have no ideas what rewards and anvils the writers will hand out at the end .

Pedro can't live, but I don't know exactly how the writers will bring that about . I think that these last few episodes have taken a very dark turn , too dark and cruel, that I hate and have difficulty watching . I used to think that Pedro would finally be grateful to Juan for protecting him from Aurora when they were kids, and i thought he might be redeemed at the end by saving either Juan or Sara whom he seemed to truly love after they were attacked . I also thought that Pedro had no idea how ruthless Dante was. Wrong. Pedro is worse than Dante , and they are both headed to hell. I guess I like to think the best of everyone ....and am often disappointed .

Unlike Turkish dizis, Mexican teleovelas don't usually kill off galans and leading ladies .

Urban, thank you for posting this! Your facts/arguments are well thought out and persuasive.

I've often said on these pages that I'm not a huge fan of hideous punishments (there are exceptions), but prefer to let time (and God) handle their final fates.

Deb. She has committed terrible deeds (particularly on Tadeo) but nothing that deserves death. I would say banishment but I can't see Sara cutting ties with Deb, even after she likely learns Dante was her father.

Pedro needs incarceration for life.

Cornelio. His fate is up in the air for me. Will both of Tadeo's "fathers" die? I'm not so sure. He has already lost Bea and Tadeo's love (at least for now). His chapter is't quite finished so I'm reserving judgement. As an abuser, I suspect there will be no happy ending for him in any case.

I'm equally conflicted about Simon. He needs psychiatric treatment although I'm not sure he can ever banish his demons. I don't think he conributed to Sev's death although his well of hatred is deep and dark.

Julieta. She also needs help. She is too unstable to ever raise a child. Mateo should get custody. That said, I'm not sure she will survive.

Rosa. Domineering, selfish and self centered. Jarifa, I like your idea of Prospi divorcing her which would make her stand on her own two feet, albeit unsteadily.

Urban, thank you!

URBAN - Thank you for getting this topic started. I love " with a side of Guacamole". LOL

My Karmageddon would be for Debora to go to jail for life with decades of community service, either scrubbing public toilets and floors with a toothbrush, or working as a fry cook (not an easy job) and wearing a hair net at a taquería. In other words, manual labor. Earn her keep, for once in her waste of a life!

Pedro *and* Juli need either the manicomio for the criminally insane, or death. (If she dies, hopefully the baby would live so Mateo can raise it.)

Dante, while bad, isn't mentally ill like Pedro. *IF* he he comes out of this alive, jail time will be sufficient. He is already seeing the error of his ways, as of last night (ha!).

Simon needs a lifetime of intense psychotherapy.

Corni - yes, he is a confusing character. He is trying to redeem himself and overcome years of resentment. Hopefully Bea won't take him back. Whatever.

Rosa's punishment will be whatever Karmageddon Julieta receives. And divorce if Prospi leaves her. Also having Jess & Alondra turn their backs on her would be nice, too.

Blogger ate my comment. I will try again.

Thank you Urban for this lovely Karmageddon! I love the pictures. And speaking of which, before I start I just want to say that is a great pic of Daniel (Pedro), he looks HOT in that!!!

Pedro - rots in a prison for the criminally insane.

Deb - I'm good with banishment, although she should probably do some jail time first for the crimes she's committed. Fraud, hiring thugs, etc. I could see her ending up in an orange jumpsuit cleaning toilets.

Juli - it's hard to say because I don't think she's nearly done yet, more like just getting started. The mask is now off and the gloves are about to come off. I am guessing she'll do much more damage in the next 16 episodes and end up dead or in prison.

Rosa - divorced from Prospi and living with public ridicule she has so dreaded....will we find out for sure if she was Sev's lover???

Simon - I agree with all the above that he needs psychiatric treatment. I don't think it's as severe as needing it for life but dude definitely needs some real help and anger management. Still with so many damaged unredeemable characters I'd like to believe that he could be one to find peace. Maybe even save his marriage.

I think Corni will escape an anvil. Just continue on the path to redemption, but he won't get Bea back.

All that said, who tried to kill Deb??? LOL I still think it was Juli but whomever did that has an additional crime to answer for.

Firt thing first: Urban, you are an amazing writer. You must know that already, but it needs repeating every once in a while.

Pedro: I think he'll die, maybe while trying to hurt Sara. Maybe in Juan's arms... I'm sure we haven't seen the last of teh chamber of torture.

Corni: Tadeo needs a father to get well after Pedro's gaslighting; I think Corni will live, but he will have to suffer through seeing Bea form a family with another man.

Julieta: surely, she must die in childbirth, after begging for Mateo's forgiveness and admitting that she did love him but was blinded by greed.

Rosa: I think she'll be OK, she has been a great comic relief in the show, if something does happen to Juli, this will be her anvil

Deb: another great comic relief, she will either get away with everything, find another married man that actually divorces his wife for her (finally helping Deb fulfill her life long dream of destroying a marriage, which sh enever actually succeded) or she will be banished by Sara and live a miserable life... I tend to think the firts option is more plausible.

I kind of get the vibe that the writers may redeem Corni and get him back with Bea so that they can both help him recover from Pedro's dark influence and the crazy changes he has been through thanks to the adults surrounding him poor little guy. He needs a secure, safe environment now.

I don't see Cornelio getting back together with Beatriz, but getting his anger and machismo under control to be a better parent.

I don't think that comic relief should be a get-out-of-jail-free card. But if Catalina in the 2019 Cuna de Loboscan get away with her crimes Deborah might. I really hate this possibility.

UA: Good Job on your Karma list. I do NOT see Gullible Paloma divorcing Crazy Simon.

Jarifa: Expect the Body Count to increase in the closing weeks.

Steve Boudreaux

Thanks, Urban. I enjoyed your lineup and the pics.

Here are my thoughts -- which are subject to change. I'm still undecided about some.

Deb: She can be witty and bring the spark, I'll give her that. But Deb is a greedy, entitled snob and has no empathy for anyone save Sara. For the crime of theft/fraud taking child support all those years, the assault on Tadeo, ordering an attack on Simon, and willingness to promote Sara to Pedro, I sentence Deb to have to work for a living and pay back the money she owes the Del Monte estate.

Pedro: He has got to go. He's a danger to everyone. Life in prison, with therapy for his torture and homicide issues.

Cornelio: His attempted rape of Bea and help to the thugs who attacked the mansion are his worst crimes. He's turned himself around and Tadeo needs a father who loves him, so I'm okay with him keeping visitation rights.

Simon: Where his machista ways came from I don't know since his bros are not like that, but that man loves his momma and Paloma to the max. Paloma has (most rightfully) continued to work as a lawyer, sing at Adolorida, and take birth control pills to delay pregnancy, plus slapped the crap out of him in public. With all that, he is still very much in love and happy with her and she's happy too. Simon and Paloma should go on a couples retreat and he should get back into individual therapy because Paloma shouldn't and can't be the answer to his issues. My take on him almost tapping Deb with his car is that he was playing "chicken" (a crime, yes) but not trying to kill her cause he did it in broad daylight in the public square with people around. I see an enlightened Simon having a HEA with Paloma. One more thing though. He still needs to apologize to Sara for dumping her in the mud and in general blaming her for her mom's deeds.

Julieta: Therapy. Therapy. Therapy. I don't think she'll make a good mother initially, so Mateo should wind up as the custodial parent.

Rosa: She has already received her karmageddon, with Julieta's marriage blowing up and the town gossip that will ensue. I agree with comments that Prospi is partly to blame too for not standing up to Rosa sooner.

Dante: Poor thing. He blames Deb, but he was greedy too to give up fatherhood of Sara in exchange for bilking Sev. He's had no empathy for the Del Monte boys or Sara's feelings of abandon by her dad. I hope he wrote a letter or will so Sara knows the truth about him if he doesn't make it out of Pdero's lair alive.

Aurora: The sickest, most horrible woman. Gone. Nuff said.

Henry: Honestly, I was set up to snarl at Henry throughout the TN, but they exited him too soon. Juan's head butt was so much fun.
