Highlights from the couch . . .
The drama continues . . .
PAULA/ROGELIO Paula reads the back of the photo pieces where Rogelio tells Erika that she is the woman who has given him everything and he professes his love for her, etc. Paula is not stupid, doesn't lose any time and vacates Villa Morelia leaving the photo and her wedding ring in full view for Rogelio's benefit. Rogelio gets home and puts all the pieces together. He falls apart.
TWO MONTHS later. Rogelio is still in a funk. He isn't going into work and is barely taking care of himself. He has Fidel hire detectives to search for Paula. All they know is that she flew to Mexico City, got into a car and was gone. Little does he know that she has ended up in Sayulita, Nayarit where she works at a shop and is doing local gigs to showcase her music. She changes jobs to work at a bookstore with more flexible hours and runs into a musician friend of hers from Mexico City named Ulises who now owns a restaurant in Sayulit. He tells her she can sing at his place whenever she wants.
Rogelio has Fidel hire detectives to find Paula. One detective sees Eva going to see Cecilia and excitedly showing her something on her phone. He thinks she is showing her some communication from Paula. Rogelio sends Fidel to retrieve the info from Eva's phone. Fidel manages to see the phone in her bedroom as she is taking a shower. He has to hide in her closet when she comes out and gets more of an eyeful than he ever wanted. Fidel tells Rogelio where Paula is from the info on the phone and they go to Sayulita. Rogelio roams the streets asking if anyone has seen the woman on his phone (Paula). Friends of Paula deny having seen her but her present employer, a kind old man, identifies her as his friend and employee. He adds that she went out with or friend or novio and won't be back today. Paula later sees Rogelio on the beach and flees back to her place. She calls Eva and blames her for Rogelio finding out where she is. Eva admits telling Cecilia (really??)but has no idea how Rogelio got the info. Paula wonders if Eva was followed. That night Paula performs at the restaurant. As she sits and chats as Ulysses helps her with something in her eye, Rogelio sees them and is convinced that Ulises must be her novio. That was the end of the episode.
EVERYTHING ELSE
Martina wants to see her lawyer to know what they can expect from Ignacio. When she gets to his law office, she finds that he is out of town. She insists on talking to the head of the firm. His name is Garibay. Little does she know that he is Ignacio's lawyer who told Ignacio he was on the Iturbide case for him at the beginning of he episode.
MARCO is walking but jealous because Blanca has a boyfriend from school and Alfredo the therapist seems interested in her.
MARTINA blames Paula for Rogelio's decline and depression. She doesn't want to see her again in her household. She visits Erika twice to let her know that the road is open for her to win Rogelio back but she needs to move quickly before Paula makes an appearance. Martina reminds Erika that she seduced Rogelio once and she can seduce him again.
IMELDA is sick and tired of Martina calling all of the shots and not allowing her to see her mother because of the Ignacio situation.. She tells Fernando that she has had it with her and is sick of accommodating her. Early in the episode we see what happened when Martina wants to kick Imelda out because she is Ignacio's cousin. Fernando tells his mother that was not happening.
HONORIO gets an envelope with documents naming him the heir to all of his deceased aunt's land.
LUIS has lots of friends. He gets a text from Axel asking him if they are going to see each other the day of the gender reveal party. Martina presumes that Axel must have something to do with Luis' work. Why else would he be going to see him? Luis visits with Alfredo whose mother Aranza comes on to him.
That is it for me tonight. Pease add what I left out.
Jarifa, another fabulous recap, brimming with details.
Paula was hit right between the eyes; yet despite the numbing shock managed to keep her wits about her, vanishing into the wind. No note, no explanation, just the picture which said a thousand words and a wedding ring signifying broken promises of the worst sort.
Conversely, instead of immediately trying to track Paula down himself, Rogelio falls into a destructive, self-pitying state. Whatever would he do without Fidel?
Martina “visits Erika twice to let her know that the road is open for her to win Rogelio back but she needs to move quickly before Paula makes an appearance” made me cringe. I imagine Martina feels Erika already gave her the all-important first male heir so she seems the better bet.
Fidel being cornered in Eva’s closet made me smile.
Who knew Luis was such a babe magnet?? Now if he would just stop mooning over Paula.
It is inevitable Paula and Rogelio will meet. I hope she stays strong and makes him crawl over broken glass for her. At the very least.
Diana
Diana, Minas de Pasión (the La Patrona remake) is actually starting in Mexico in August 21, in a few weeks. I assume it'll come to Univisión some days after that, possibly at the start of September? Just a thought, I don't know. But I'm sure about the fetcha de estreño in Mexico.
I'll be really disappointed if Vencer la Culpa never airs because I'd been looking forward to it.
Everyone is starting to annoy me.At first I thought this was going to be slightly different, given that Paula left. But I'm a couple episodes ahead and...I don't know who I dislike more: Rogelio or Marco.
It just occurred to me that Blanca, when hurt, tried to harm herself wheras Marco lashes out at her. His you've got a boyfriend and there's another one interested in you and 'happy now' question at the end really makes me wonder how his youth can make people be more tolerant towards him because he isn't trying to change. It still feels as though he,like Erica, thinks the person he fancies belongs to him in some sense. It's his jealousy that matters to him. He later regreted the outburst but I can't remember if he apologised. What an annoying person.
Luis and that guy appeared so suddenly together that I feel as if I had missed something.
Erica's friend asked her if it ever occurred to her that Rogelio doesn't love her anymore. I feared no one was going to bring it up to her. It's interesting that her job is to help people and yet she thinks in such a self-centered manner. I'm starting to wonder if it wasn't her illness that made her see things in a 'I want this' manner. She later even tried doing what Martina suggested, by bringing it up that they should tell Lucas the truth.
I think this telenovela made me remember why I have a dislike towards those older telenovelas where women forgive all kinds of things to men. It never is the other way around because women aren't allowed to make these mistakes. Ignacio later says love shouldn't forgive everything and I think I agree, especially if it's only the male side who gets the forgiveness.
This two month jump is not my favourite thing if we only learn about the whole drama through flashbacks. Thety have 120 episodes for soe reason and yet I have to watch a flashback of Martina trying to kick Imelda out. They'd better not drag out the rest of it with unnecessary things.
How long do you think it will be before Paula forgives Rogelio? Not forgiving would make her seem a bitmore real without turning her into a one-note, annoying version of many female protagonists.
Jarifa, thank you for A great recap with all the details as our story spins forward. ...A great way to start my day.
Losing a baby either brings a couple closer or pushes them apart. Poor Paula has to cope with her loss while also dealing with learning about Erika and Lucas.
It looks like Paula is trying to cope by returning to her free spirited, singing, bikeriding lifestyle while adding in learning to surf. She is being proactive.
Mario is pouting now, but he will cone around and be a better man.
I can't imagine having a mother in law like Martina. Yikes.
This is certainly a very different role for the guy playing Fidel.
Luis is blooming. I like him. We need more Luises.
Gracias, Jarifa.
I agree with Diana; what's with the flashbacks just after a time jump? I've never seen that before. I could not figure out at first whether they were flashbacks, dreams, and/or delusions.
Why is Imelda isolated from her mother or did they have a fight?
Why is Martina back in her toxic mode about Paula? Is she incapable of understanding that Rogelio's failure to tell Paula the truth about Erica and Lucas is a serious matter? Or -- as suggested -- Erica has provided the first healthy male grandchild? If that is the case Martina must be a vulture waiting for Erica to die so she can take control of Lucas.
Diana, I got a kick out of Fidel trapped in the closet really not wanting to look and then regretting he ever did. Poor Luis! He couldn’t escape from Aranza. The humor from those two and the usual suspects was welcome. I was surprised that Rogelio fell apart like he did. Yikes! I agree that Paula better make “him crawl over broken glass.” As for Martina, she is relentless. Ughh!
Waterlily, yes, this novela does have its ever growing group of unlikable characters. I, also, feel that we do not know Luis’ story since he keeps to himself and refuses to tell his mother where he goes and who he sees. As for Paula, I am hoping they drag out her returning to Rogelio so he really remembers what he did. Very true comment about women forgiving men and men not quite ever forgiving women of the same transgressions in these novelas.
Susan, I can’t think of anything worse to strain a relationship than the loss of a child. I agree that Paula is being “proactive” as you put it. She told Eva that she couldn’t deal with Rogelio yet. I cannot wait for the showdown at the restaurant tonight. Will Rogelio cause a scene or discreetly make his presence known?
Urban, from what I could conclude, Imelda is isolated from her mother because Martina has forbidden her from seeing Beatriz because of the whole Ignacio connection. Fernando, being the mommy’s boy he is, has asked Imelda to play along and be nice for the time being. What a guy! I think you hit it on the head with why Martina is against Paula and for Erika. It is all about Lucas. At one point several episodes ago, Martina told somebody that she was tolerating Paula only because she was pregnant with her grandchild. Paula isn’t pregnant anymore so lotsa’ luck to her!
I wonder if Honorio is now a wealthy man.
Btw, Cecilia is looking for wedding dresses. I wonder if the wedding will happen sooner rather than later.
Martina is not redeemable. She is likely willing to tolerate Erica on the assumption that she will die within the next couple of years when she (Martina) will assume the same control over Lucas that she was beginning to lose over her sons.
Luis is doing the right thing by putting her on an information diet. You can only do that if you move out.
Jarifa, thanks for the details.
Will Rogelio stay calm, or will he act like a fool? Inquiring minds want to know.
I credit Fernando for standing up to Martina trying to kick out Imelda and for forcing Martina to tell Luis and Marco about Ignacio being their half-brother. But he and Imelda are nuts to give into Imelda not seeing her own mother. But Imelda is despicable anyway, so why do I care.
Nice to see Luis is up to something outside the house, but what is it?
You'd think Paula would be in touch with Cecilia too, if only to check on the school.
Yes, Urban, Martina tops the unredeemable list along with Ignacio, Irma and Imelda following right behind.
Niecie, "Will Rogelio stay calm, or will he act like a fool? Inquiring minds want to know." Along with that, this enquiring mind wants to know where in the real world does a person get to quit working because their heart is broken? Give me a break!
"Nice to see Luis is up to something outside the house, but what is it?" Luis is quite the man of mystery.
Highlights from the Couch . . .
ROGELIO/PAULA Rogelio approaches the table where Paula and Ulises are and is instantly incensed when he sees her "a married woman" with another man and hears her tell him she is not interested in what he has to say. He launches into how she has to respect him since he is her husband. She asks why when she never told him about his son. He starts to get louder and grabs at her . Security appears and then the police who arrest him. Paula says he may be her husband but he has no right to treat her like he is doing. They handcuff him and take him away. He is informed that verbal aggression is a crime. He screams that he is not a violent man. He was just having an argument with his wife. At the police station, Paula does not press charges against him. Paula leaves ALONE. The next day as Fidel is trying to find Paula's address, she shows up at Rogelio's hotel room to talk things out. They end up in bed instead. They still love each other. They send the day and the night together. When Rogelio wakes up in the morning, Paula is gone. He tracks her down to the bookstore and they agree to meet at the beach to talk. Things are tense as he explains the timeline with Erika and how when he found out about Lucas, they were having their own issues with their unborn child and then Paula had her miscarriage. He didn't want to burden her any more. He wonders who Ulises is. She explains that Ulises was an old classmate that she ran into. As for him not telling her about Lucas, she feels betrayed and humiliated because everyone knew except for her. Rogelio goes on about how when she left, he went through the worst part of his life not knowing if she were alive or dead. She has not been able to think of how she could ever trust him again, so she wants a divorce. He agrees not wanting to hurt her any more. He is worn out and can't do what he is doing anymore. He wants her to be happy. He leaves. She cries and later tells Cecilia that what really got in her craw is that Rogelio never really thought about HER and apologized. She wanted him to fight for her, try to win her back and he just gave in to her request for a divorce. Rogelio returns to Morelia as does Paula.
MARTINA/GABRIEL GARIBAY
Mr.Garibay, Ignacio's lawyer is coming over to the Iturbide house to discuss an agreement with Ignacio. Luis tells his brothers that his mother knows Mr. Garibay from when they were young. (was the knight chess piece a gift from Gabriel Garibay and not Hipólito?) We see Martina wondering about what to wear to the meeting. When Mr. Garibay finally arrives, he knows all of the sons' names. He asks where their mother is. He turns and meets Martina's eye and is breathless . . .
EVERYTHING ELSE
Lucas is angry that Paula has disappeared and has been harder for Erika to manage. On his way back to Morelia, Rogelio calls him and Lucas invites him over for supper saying that his mother is on call. Rogelio arrives and finds out that Erika is home. Lucas is happy that his plan worked. He made a spaghetti supper.
As soon as Martina hears that Rogelio is getting a divorce she pays Erika a visit and tells her that her moment has arrived to get Rogelio back. Earlier, Erika decided that she wanted Rogelio back and for them to have the family they always dreamed of.
Honorio makes a trip to see the land he inherited. His land is not under water as he feared. He sits in his inherited house and dreams of a family with Micaela.
Now that he is mobile, Marco is turning out to be a real pest to Blanca showing up after school to pick her up when she clearly has other plans like with her boyfriend. That angers her. On the other hand, she spends her nights in her room drawing portraits of Marco while he is thinking about her. Marco proposed some kind of business for him and her that she liked but we never got any details.
Felipa writes a letter apologizing to Paula for her role in finding photos for Imelda. She feels guilty about what happened.
Luis meets again with this guy who is NOT Alfredo the therapist and his mother. The guy seems to be a photo editor that can get some work for him. The mother still has eyes for Luis.
Ulises offers Paula to be more than friends. She refuses and no she doesn't' want him waiting for her. By the way, he has a sister who is a lawyer if she needs one.
Ignacio stops by to see Fernando and tell him he has gotten rid of any illegal insteps and replaced them with Legal ones. Ignacio wants him to know that he sees Fernando as a brother. Fernando doesn't agree. Ignacio is also delivering wedding invitations to teh whole family. Fernando says he is not interested. Ignacio leaves.
Cecilia and Paula seem to be BFFs again.
Excellent as always Jarifa! You perfectly encapsulated the angst and agony of Rogelio and Paula's disturbing makeup and immediate breakup.
"He launches into how she has to respect him since he is her husband. She asks why when she never told him about his son. He starts to get louder and grabs at her". So, this is how the "galan" begs for forgivenss? Entitlement and demanding she respect him? My stomach roils.
"He is informed that verbal aggression is a crime. He screams that he is not a violent man. He was just having an argument with his wife," No crawling through broken glass, no admittance of guilt and betrayal?
Paula succumbing to this crud was cringeworthy.
I smiled when Fidel went to the hotel door the next day and realized Rogelio and Paula were together. I didn't smile at them being together. Fidel is so hawt.
When Paula woke it seemed she saw that Erika had sent Rogelio a picture of her and Lucas - did it say something about missing him/looking forward to his return??
"She cries and later tells Cecilia that what really got in her craw is that Rogelio never really thought about HER and apologized". BINGO! Run Paula, don't walk...Let Erika have him.
Mr. Garibay, I give you the same advice. Run....
What a frustrating episode! What a fabulous recap!
Diana
Thanks, Diana. Glad you enjoyed the recapcito. : ) I just checked my notes. You had it right! Erika’s message with the photo was: “We miss you. Come back soon.” Your “Run” advice to Paula and Mr. Garibay made me laugh. Mr. Garibay looks like such a nice man. He looks like he would deserve way better than being stuck with Martina. I wonder what Ignacio’s demands will be.
I was so furious at Paula and Rogelio that I'm not sure I was focused enough to remember the rest. Paula's 'he just gave in' statement felt so childish to me. I do agree he should have fought, but if she demands the divorce and expects the opposite to happen, she needs to stop reading romance novels. I remember hearing a song which was about exactly this: a man is supposed to understand that when a woman says something, she means the opposite. The top comment said this was just stupid because men aren't mind readers.
Rogelio is an egotistical prick. He only talked about how ungrateful Paula was. What exactly has he done to deserve her gratitude? Talked about how he has never loved anyone like this before? Has he forgotten that she was the one wh omoved to another city to be with him and tried to win over his witch of a mother? Erica can have him. Both of them are self-centered in some way. Erica regreted not being brave enough to face Martina, I doubt she'd fair any better this time because Martina cares about no one. She does seem to love her kids somewhat, but their happiness is not her priority and will never be. I guess she is a nracisist so I shouldn't expectto see any empathy from her.
It doesn't seem Marco's accident has changed him for the better. The romance in this telenovela is...I just can't. What does Blanca see in him?I can't believe she is supposed to end up with him when he is possessive and jealous.
I can't believe Paula ended up in bed with that prick. So much for'I don't want him to find me'. I wonder if she'd have left if it hadn't been for that message.
I'll need to learn some breathing techniques because otherwise I won't be able to watch the ending of this show. Fernando at least stood up for Imelda when Martina wanted to kick her out and even tried to move out whereas Rogelio did absolutely nothing. He only wanted to move out when he personally was affected by his mother's actions. It was always'give her a chance'.
Weregalanes always that agressive and selfish or is this the current trend?
I got this out of my system and so now I can go on with my day!
waterlily, you cracked me up this morning with your "I'll need to learn some breathing techniques because otherwise I won't be able to watch the ending of this show." Excellent point about Fernando. Blanca's saving graces are that she is mooning about Marco in private, is giving him the brush off in public and that she is so young and inexperienced. So, I can give her a pass. As for your your comment about Paula: "if she demands the divorce and expects the opposite to happen, she needs to stop reading romance novels." it was right on. IMHO, most of the galanes in recent years, have nothing on the stronger more silent types in older novelas. I have liked a few of the more recent galanes but not many.
Jerrifa, well, apparently I can be funny. Who would have thought:)
Oh and what was up with paula just randomly messaging Cecilia? Wasn't she angry with her? It's kind of entitled of her to think ceci will now respond when she messages out of the blue. Or did I miss something?
Funny, that you mentioned the “random” text. No explanation for that one. We didn’t miss a thing! Oh, well . . . :/
Jarifa, thank you for another great view from your couch.
I have never seen the actor playing Rogelio in this type of role . His angry scenes shocked me throughout the episodes. In the shows that I have seen him in previously , he played a kind, quiet, , supportive, old-fashioned type galan, A gentle giant . I think Paula fell in love at first sight with the black hair and those blue eyes. Now she knows he has a temper and a lot of baggage . However, you could tell they were immediate!y drawn together again and jumped into bed . Absence made the hearts grow fonder. I think they will end up together. But then.... what do I know. I thought for quite awhile that Gael would end up having all his surfside fantasies come true with Leonamar.( I blame the writers leading me down the garden path with all Gael's excellent moves and kisses.)
I like Ulisses, the cool surfer dude. He is a good match for Paula's free spirit , go with the flow vibe . But we all know that opposites sometimes attract. I think Paula loves Rogelio, but he has some major issues ...his domineering mom, a sick ex, A son,
Amazing how Imelda likes to wander around Martina's room and rifle through her things. She really wants that butterfly pin and to become the new Queen if the Mariposas.
Jarifa, another slam dunk. I missed watching a lot of Friday's, but your notes make everything clear.
I thought for sure that when Paula and Rogelio kissed, after the commercial break she'd slap him. But nope, they wind up in bed. Then she demands a divorce, and he agrees because he thinks this shows her the respect she says he didn't show her when he withheld about Lucas and Erika. They're both being silly. Even Fernando said to Rogelio something like "she's angry now, why not wait?"
Poor Mr. Garibay. Hombre, that girl you were smitten with is now a cold, heartless dictator.
Somebody please catch Imelda sniffing around Martina's room.
Thanks Jarifa for another fabulous recap! I am behind as predicted but I'll catch up over the weekend. Can we please have a schedule change and one hour episodes Uni??? Sigh
Sounds like some wonky breakup! I am not a fan of the leave without saying a word approach to begin with, I much prefer the big dramatic fight where the heroine throws a glass of whatever she's drinking in the guy's face and storms off. Then to reconcile immediately just to separate again....hmm.
Well, since I haven't watched yet, I'll comment on so-called galans and the new novelas. I haven't watched Friday's Tierra episode yet so I can't say for sure but when I saw the pre-view it made me think that what is missing in novelas recently is suspense and the slow burn. I was so hoping the main character in Tierra would dance around each other for awhile before going in for the first kiss. The build up of anticipation and 'earning' it for lack of a better way to describe it. I remember back in the old days when you waited and watched the flirting and every day you were like 'is it going to be today?' and then when the kiss finally happened you rewound the recording like 6 times to rewatch and appreciate the moment. These days these people are coupled up and even married by episode 5 and it's a lot less fun to watch IMO.
As for galans, I whole heartedly leave a lot to be desired in recent years!!! And some of them have been down right horrible, like whatever she name was from Cabo (glad I already blocked that) I don't know how recent is recent, but the only one I can think of that I absolutely loved in recent years was David Paredes from Medicos!! I remember watching that and thinking it was a good call back to when you could actually root for the HEA. Memo on Mi Camino es amarte was pretty good too. Not in the same class exactly, but definitely a step above what has sadly become the norm.
If recently is as far back as 2015 then I'd say all three of the Gallardo brothers from Tierra de Reyes and Leonardo Fuentemayor from Quien es Quien.
Gracias for the great recap.
That message messed up the reconciliation just as the one Imelda tore up started the split. However I think b that poor Paula will end up pregnant again.
I agree that Rogelio was a total jerk demanding respect. He seems to have drunk more of his egg donor's poison. I don't have much hope for the solvency of the family business during his absence either. Fernando is an amateur by comparison and a fool to have ever trusted Ignacio.
Sr Garibay is probably the man Martina wanted when she was forced to marry Hipolito.
Asmuch as Martina gets my blood boiling I hope she catches Imelda snooping. If Imelda weren't pregnant she'd eat her alive.
Urban, I think you may be right about Paula being pregnant again which would explain why the writers decided to have them immediately jump into bed after Rogelia found her . although medically I think that is too soon after she lost her first baby.
Yes, Mr.G must be Martina's young lover . Mr. G , Martina has probably changed A bit since back in the day. Beware. She's become kind of a bitter itch. Don't get your heart broken like Gael and David . Just sayin. People change. Love hurts. Love scars.
Currently not watching any novelas but I find the galans talk interesting. And I agree with Darcy (hi, amiga, hope you're doing good) that we haven't had any decent galans recently.
The best that comes to mind in recent memory is Michel Brown in Amar a muerte, and I suspect that is mainly because, you know, Michel Brown.
And watching a couple actually "earn" that first smooch is something I don't even remember seeing recently (oh, yeah, maybe Franco and Sarita in Pasion 2, but only because I was only watching the entire thing FOR them.
There might be a few others I can't remember now, but if I can't remember, than they don't really count.
I do miss the novelas from before, where you had a first kiss in episode 30, I'm all for being modern and open, but there are ways to write a slow burn that makes sense for the story and is edge of your seat hot.
I started watching telenovelas because of one galan..Fernando Colunga . i surfed into Alborado and saw Don Luis in period costume and high boots carrying a sword. hmmmm...what's this? I then enjoyed Big Ed Yanez in Destilando Amor. I guess nowadays telenovelas are reflecting real life where people move fast. ..no time for romance. We came close with El Amor Invencible , but then the writers dropped the ball. The new galans are antiheroes. The old galans were heroes with flaws. Maybe nobody believes in heroes . I do. That's what I want to see in galans....looking right at you, Juan O.
Bonjour, Adriana, Well,..We had a lot of slow burning in Invencible, but then, it all fizzled out . A big wave crashed on shore and put out the fire. Maybe there are new rules in telenovela writing .
Hi Adriana, I am doing pretty well, hope things are better for you at work! Amar a muerte, huh? Hmm... I'll have to consider that since it's on Vix. IIRC I watched a few episodes of that but then I stopped. Normally I would watch Michel Brown even if all he was doing was watching paint dry, but I'm turned off by the whole people die and their souls switch bodies concept in general. I don't remember why I stopped watching but that's probably it. Speaking of Franco and Sarita (Pasion de Gavilanes, and most recents PDG2) they were in example of the slow burn couple when they originally got together in season 1, it was 60+ episodes if I remember correctly before their first kiss and boy was at electric!!! Definitely a great example of what I was talking about.
Susan, I think Big Ed is getting ready to play a galan role again in an upcoming novela. Golpe de Suerte, I think? It's on the coming soon list on wiki. At least I am assuming he'll be the galan because he is the top billed character but I could be wrong. Playing opposite Mayrin Villanueva.
`
Susan, my couch has the best view ever! I have never seen Marcus Ornellas play this kind of role either but he is doing a great job. What I am always surprised by is that he is Brazilian and you do not hear any trace of a Portuguese accent in his Spanish. Truly bilingual! Ulises does seem a better match for Paula but I agree that we know where this is going.
Niecie, both of the protagonists being "silly"? You can say that again. Makes you want to knock their heads together. I was hoping Martina would have stepped in on Imelda as she was manhandling her monarch pin. How dare she?! : ) We can hope for an unpleasant encounter in the future.
Darcy, "Sounds like a wonky breakup!" Sure is.
Urban, "I think that poor Paula will end up pregnant again." Me, too. Funny how almost NOBODY thinks about birth control in these novelas. Back in 2005, in La fea más bella, there is even a discussion between two of the characters about birth control and how it only takes once without it to end uo pregnant. That is the best PSA they could ever make rather than all of these characters that are just Oh! so overtaken by their passion and go for it. "I don't have much hope for the solvency of the family business during his absence either". Good point. Fernando is a fool in more ways than one.
waterlily, I was thinking about my "semi-recent" favorite galanes and I can think of two. The first one is Alex González who played the lead in a Spanish novela/series called "El Príncipe" (2014) He plays a Christian policeman investigating a terrorism cell in the Spanish territory of Ceuta in Northern Africa who falls in love with a Muslim woman. A forbidden romance! You want to talk about sizzle. . . you sure had it in that novela. The other one was Daniel Arenas in "Mi marido tiene familia" (2017-2019). I though he was cute and the perfect combination of a sensitive man who still had a backbone. All of my other favorite galanes are from the past: Jaime Camil /LFMB, Fernando Colunga /"Soy tu dueña", Jorge Salinas/"Mi corazón es tuyo." Who are your favorites?
Darcy, I, also, think that Michel Brown is a cutie and would like to see more of him, too.
Susan, the last time I saw Big Ed, he was playing a major character's father in "La reina del sur" seasons two and three.
I was watching the final episodes of the second season of "The Lincoln Lawyer" last night on Netflix and who should I spy? Angélica María playing the main character's mother. I heard the voice and did a double take. She always makes me smile.
So nice to see the conversation going while i drop by while sauteeing zucchini from a friend's garden.
It seems that we all have "a type" we are drawn to regarding telenovios. My newest is Daniel Elbittar. Diana was right when she told me that he resembled Mauricio Cordonba, probably my#1 telenovio. I like Oswaldo who will be in Minas de Pasion and Burak Ozcivit from several Turkish dizis I watched .It is interesting watching minor characters and trying to figure out which actors might become galans in the future.
Jarifa, I have never watched " Lincoln Lawyer" , but my friend recommended it to me. What telenovelas would I know the actress playing his mother from?
Susan, she played Lety’s (Angelica Vale is her real daughter) mother in LFMB. From what I could find on Wiki her last novela role was in ¡Qué bonito amor! (2013) She appears with her daughter frequently on her daughter’s YouTube channel. The Lincoln Lawyer is a very good detective series and the actor (Manuel García Rulfo) who plays the main role is another real cutie.
Just researched "Minas" . It has some familiar faces . I wonder when it will start.
" Mujer" is moving right along ...full of good and bad people. Not sure how many episodes are left before the 10 pm time slot is open .
Jerrifa, I remember watching en nombre del amor and liking Sebastian Zurita in that one. I believe he was actually disliked in that one because the ladies wanted the female lead to end up with a different guy, who I did like but who didn't seem to have much of a personality besides' I want to be with this girl'. I can't explain even to myself why I liked Zurita. Maybe because his character was all about I'll do the right thing but at the same time was ready to marry the female lead when her evil aunt opposed to this and he knew it. But I watched Zurita in another telenovela and couldn't finish the damn thing. It didn't seem to matter he was the main galan. I also like Ferdinando Valencia. Oh and Daniel from invencible is my new favourite.
Btw I liked Juan Soler as well. Has he ever played a good guy before? That voice of his...
Waterlily, I have seen Juan Soler in good guy roles. In fact, I think that be mostly played good guys .
Watch Juan Soler in `La Otra`.
This a great novela!!!! I've watched it a couple of times. Oh, and it has Sergio Sendel as the perfect bad man.
Excellent cast and writing all the way around.
I have only seen Sebastian Zurita in one main galan role which was in La Impostura, I wonder waterlily if that's the one you are referring to. Zurita's character in that was pretty vanilla, not bad just not terribly exciting and the series as a whole was just okay. I probably wouldn't have finished it myself but I was absolutely spell bound by the performance of Jonathan Islas - his character wasn't a galan for sure, probably a lot closer to being the villain, but to this day it's the only character I can think of that actually made me hate him, and I mean LOATH him and be actively hoping for his painful death; throughout the first half of the novela, and yet somehow made also made me care about and root for him by the end. And that was without some big reveal or dramatic reason for his redemption, just genuine character development and growth. Jonathan's performance was so vulnerable and raw that somehow I still wanted to hug the character even after he'd done countless awful things. I remain impressed that he was able to make such a horrible character sympathetic by El Fin.
Jarifa, "El Principe" was fantastic. Wow, that was nine years ago? I'd watch it again. Alex González playing an undercover policeman falling in love...sigh. Definitely a slow burn romance since she came from a strict family and IIRC said family was arranging for her to marry some businessman.
I only saw like the last 10 minutes of epis of the long-runnning dizi "Amor Eterno," but Burak Ozcivit was excellent as the galan who would do anything for his lady love, who was married against her will to another guy. His galan wasn't just good-looking but smart, the man always had a plan. Actually, I found the despicable antagonist played by Kaan Urgancıoğlu appealing too. One of the best hero versus villain matches I've seen because both were smart and sexy in their own way. The saddest, most horrible ending ever though.
Cristián de la Fuente played a great galan in Amor Bravo. Back in 2012. He formed a Scooby Gang with his lady love to fight the baddies. There's was slow burn as she was coming out of a bad marriage.
Michel Brown was great as a policeman in "Falco" who wakes up after being in a coma for years. He investigates the crime against him and tries to reclaim his wife and kid. This was a short-run TN that lasted only 14 episodes. The ending wasn't so happy though.
Niecie, yes, Burak Ozcivit is great. I watched " The Songbird" with him and his wife. He was amazing in a historical dizi i watched ...Osman ??? I couldn't stand the villain in " Amor Eterna." He is currently the galan right now in " Secrets' " but I detested him so much in Amor Eterna, so I just couldn't watch it even though Dondi is doing an outstanding job recapping it .
Dondi recommended " Kara Para Ask" ( Black Money Love) on Netflix a few years ago starring a terrific galan Engin Akyuek. He was also great in " The Ambassadors Daughter " on Univision.
Dondi also recommended " Fatmagul" with Engin as galan on a painful hero's journey ...my favorite dizi\telenovela.
Susan, I checked out Secrets this week now that Invencible ended. Kaan works for me in it as a good guy but of course I have no idea who's who or what's what.
I'd watch "The Ambassador's Daughter" again. Engin and the protagonista were combustible together. I remember them in each other's face arguing once, and I got the vapors! The actress must have nerves of steel. ;>
Darcy, yes, that's the one! I kept thinking it was called lo imperdonable but now I got my facts straight. Maybe the romance in that one just wasn't my thing in general. But I also remember that Zurita had a daughter in that one and I somehow just...I can't explain it, but Icouldn't see him in that role of a father. I later saw another actor, don't know his name unfortunately, playing a role of a father in simplemente Maria 2015 and remember thinking 'if you told me this girl was his daughter, I'd believe you'. Wish I could remember the character you are talking about. But maybe I didn't even getfar enough as I saw maybe 30 episodes. Maybe I'd have lasted longer if my Spanish had been better and If I had liked at least one of the leads. I didn't feel like that with Zurita.
So much fun seeing who everyone's favotive galans are! I would have to say mine are Eduardo Yanez (thrilled he is an upcoming novela, thanks Darcy!) and Gabe Soto (I fear I'm at his table on the patio by myself, but...) :) I also like Daniel Arenas.
El Nombre del Amor was one of my favorites! Allisson Lozz and Luis Hacha were young and in love. Her evil aunt (Letty Calderon) ended up murdering him. He was incredible and after he passed, I don't think anyone could have matched up. Sebastian Zurita was who she ended up with. I don't think it was that fans didn't particularly care for him waterlily, but he paled in comparison to Luis' character.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend and staying cool!!
Diana
Susan, I 100% agree Fatmagul is one of my all-time Favorites!!! I thought of Karim in the good galan category but since it originally aired in 2008 I didn't think it was that recent. Plus, even though he was ultimately a wonderful guy you do have the painful hero's journey to contend with. I LOVE that show though! I noticed it's now on Vix. Also, about Fatmagul is it probably the best all-round ensemble cast I've never seen. The acting is phenomenal!! I remember watching it and being impressed by the performance of one actor after another after another after another each new day.
I added Kara Para Ask to my Netflix cue 2 years ago but still haven't watched yet, I really should.
Waterlily, the character I'm talking about was Cristobal one of Zurita's younger brothers but yeah if you only made it 20 episodes you probably didn't think much about him. He went from being the punk little brother to a real jerk, to a total jacka**, and then somehow he was just this broken vulnerable little boy and even though you couldn't really reconcile it you just found yourself hoping that somehow someway he would end up living HEA. The novela didn't give him a traditional HEA - you probably couldn't have after all his deeds, he didn't kill anyone or doing anything demanding of death or jail but he did his dirt - they didn't give him an anvil either though. He ended with sort of a tongue-in-cheek type scenario that could have ended up being a new opportunity or a new curse depending on how things played out after El Fin. It was a fitting ending for him and chuckle inducing.
Darcy, Dondi never steers me wrong . Kara Para Ask ( Black Money Love) is excellent . Great acting and an interesting storyline . Engin and Tuba are always excellent together .
I'm currently watching " La Mujer de Judas" which is probably the weirdest telenovela I've ever seen. It was made 9 years ago , but Daniel E. Did an excellent job even way back then playing a very bad guy ....an amoral wolf\cad\roue\womanizer\player\Don Juan who spends his time scheming and seducing . He already had his signature moves...this time using them for evil instead of good. The guy must be a natural. I believe him when he plays evil as well as when he plays good. I think he must be able to put himself completely into whatever character he is portraying .
I know that nobody is watching " Mujer" , but it is a very interesting story about good people trying to deal with bad people . It is all about love and friendship and resilience when life knocks you down , down, down . I like the strong , silent, steadfast galan very much. (See " Helium" by sia)
I am watching. I like it so far. Speaking of galans, I wouldn't say Santos is the good old-fashioned galan ideal but I do like him so far because he's so different from the norm. I like his irreverence and his openly laughing at Maria Teresa. I like her too, tough without being cold and unapproachable.
I am wondering how apart in age Regina and Valentina could be? Could they be twins? As bitter as Bernanda is I'm wondering if she actually got pregnant twice or just once? Especially since we've established Marco is the love em and leave em type and it appears he's the guy in Bernanda's past. I doubt they were together long enough for him to impregnate her twice. Does she actually expect her daughters to stay away from men their entire lives??
The whole set up for the big misunderstanding between Maria Teresa and Regina is on deck. M.T sees her gets no response, thinks how rude. Vents to the maid about how disrespectful she is and interrupted by an emergency before it can be clarified that Regina can't hear or speak...we know what's coming next.
Speaking of, I'm betting $5 that Santos is getting slapped on Monday night!
Rutilio once raped Bernarda so he could be the sperm donor for one of her daughters.
BTW, Sofia Castro (Valentina) is 26 and Andres Palacios (Santos) is 47. Here we go again.
Darcy, another thing I loved about “El Príncipe” was that we had three endings online so I got my happy ending for Javi and Fátima. That was the first time I saw José Coronado who I have seen in quite a few Spanish productions since. He and Alex González were teamed up again in “Vivir sin permiso” (Unauthorized Living) on Netflix.
Someone mentioned LINCOLN LAWYER - it's currently one of may favorite English language series. It has a Mexican in the main role, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, and he is to die for. The guy has a lot of charm and the show is using it perfectly. And that accent!
Strongly recommended!!
For people wanting to pull their hair out and throw furniture at the screen, I also recommend Pasion Prohibida, with Jencarlos Canela and Monica Spears, in her last main role before her tragic death. The main characters are a pair of cheaters so don't watch if you have a strong moral compass, but I don't remember seeing better chemistry (besides Amor Bravio) in the last 10 years or so. At first it was very slow burn and then it got very hot (the way only forbidden love can) and then... well, I won't spoil it for those who want to check it out. I remember forgetting to breathe while watching it.
It was made after a Turkish story (Ask-Memnu, I think), which was even better!
I just found this wonderful site as recommended to me by a Nicaragua friend of mine since I was watching Amor Real.
Boy I'm so excited to have found a place where I can improve my Spanish by watching these telenovelas and sharing my thoughts with others that are addicted as I am to these fantasy stories that DO HAVE AN END.
I started watching Soap Operas in my teens during the 'DARK SHADOWS' days, then I added General Hospital. I had to give up watching when I started having kids.
So I look forward to sharing these stories THAT END with you guys.
Are you liking 'Tierra de Esperanzas'?????
I'm almost finished with Amor Real and want to watch something when I finish next week with Amor Real.
She said there was a Table of the novelas you guys recommend, but I don't know where to find it. Can anyone help.?????
Looking forward to blogging with you guys now that I know Caray exists.
I really like the discussion on the galanes. I've watched few novelas so I don't know if I'm the best person to comment on that, lol!
Hi, Anon! Welcome! Ah, yes, the table of telenovelas. Here's how you'll find it:
I assume you're on a smartphone or tablet. Scroll to the bottom of this page. You'll see a "View web version" hyperlink. Click on it and the table of telenovelas is to the left.
OR
To the top of the webpage, there's a navigation bar. Click on the arrow next to "Home" and then you can see the telenovelas by clicking on "Previous Shows" (about 5 pages). I'd recommend the first method though.
Fun fact: I'm pretty sure the original blog mom's first telenovela was Amor Real.
Bienvenidos, Newbie! So glad you're here!
Look at the side bar on the left of the home page for discussions of upcoming novelas and other general topics as well as the recaps of past programs we've covered.
The Weekend Discussions link goes to many novela sub-topics about villain types and cliches and includes a call-out to producer Carla Estrada whom we decided would be the ideal producer if TelevisaUnivision would please buy the story rights to Dark Shadows. Sadly, many photos in discussions going back that far are now missing.
P.S., I'm a huge fan of that classic series and you can watch it free on Amazon Prime, Tubi TV, and I think another site or two.

Welcome, Newbie! We are a friendly group and the resources on this site are impressive. You mentioned one of the main reasons I love telenovelas, too: they are stories”THAT END”. Nothing better!
We just finished Watching " El Amor Invencible", a very frustrating novela , and some of us ( or maybe just me) haven't recovered yet and are pouting .
Caray ( Oh My !!!or Good Grief !!) Got its name from Melinama , the original blog mom. It is a fun place to share our love of these crazy tales of love and revenge.
I guess I will have to check out " Lincoln Lawyer."
Just finishing " La Mujer de Judas," probably the wildest, weirdest ride I have ever been on. Does anyone remember Mauricio Islas from Amor Real ? He is in it .He was Fernando Colunga 's rival for the fair Adela Noriega in Amor Real.
Welcome Newbie!
I remember Mauricio Islas, I didn’t watch Amor Real but I saw him in Prisonera. That was one intensely dramatic show and surrounded by conflict but I liked it. I LOVED one of the songs in that show and could never find it realized outside of the production. It was titled Siempre by Cesar Roman and it is hauntingly beautiful.
Just want to give a big WELCOME to Newbie! It’s always nice to have “newbies” join in on the discussions…and we always need help with recapping, if interested. As to the page with the table I think your friend recommended, there was one at one time, but the creator developed it on Google docs; and when she left Caray, she “locked” it and a permission was required to view it. Consequently, the link was removed from the sidebar. It would be nice if someone ( or maybe as a group effort), would develop another page for us.
Susanlynn, there was some talk about a second season for Amor Invencible, but nothing for sure. Just remember that we have had other (better) TNs that were supposed to have a second season and they never came to fruition.
Great discussion on the galans!! The one that comes to mind is Michel Brown in “Amar a Muerte” HAWT!
Newbie, wishing you a very warm welcome!
We are a caring, supportive community; glad you are joining the party!
Susan, I came to Caray 15 years ago and you, Judy, Niecie and a few others were already here. While I can't add anything as to when Caray first began, I will always be grateful for "finding" all of you!
I am watching Tierra, but admit not very closely. I am a huge fan of Andres, the galan; he has a great smile, beautiful eyes and seems kind, honest and caring.
Newbie, the fact that these stories do have an ending is what keeps me rivited from start to "FIN". :)
